Work on mistakes

However, we did not scold the Corolla for the design. Another thing is the interior. The architecture has not changed radically, but the interior has definitely become better - there is practically no cheap silvery plastic left, soft “stitched” material appeared on the front panel.

The Corolla also got a new climate control unit, round adjustable deflectors in Audi style, a color display in the instrument cluster and a multimedia complex with fully touch-sensitive buttons at the edges (the same as the Hilux pickup truck). The range of power units offered for the Corolla has not changed. The starting modification is a 99-horsepower 1.3 with a six-speed mechanics, but we were only able to test versions with Multidrive S CVTs, the same ones that Corolla was equipped with before the update. By the way, as Toyota representatives found out by interviewing focus groups, many potential buyers run away from this box like fire. Why? They confuse it with the old MultiMode robot, which was installed at the dawn of the production of the previous generation.

Again, we are pleased to note that toyotovsky variator is very good! Formally, the difference between them is small - some 18 “horses”, 19 N∙m of torque and 0.9 seconds of acceleration to hundreds. But in fact, driving a Corolla 1.8 is much more pleasant - it’s easier to overtake on country roads, and to sink the pedal to the floor and listen to the desperate roar of the engine on high revs need less. Therefore, 1.8 “eats” no more than 1.6 - the average consumption, taking into account traffic jams, was 8.2 l / 100 km. Why, for example, was it necessary to pull up the window sill line in the stern so sharply? However, the new design can also be classified as a kind of crazy, dash, from which one step to charisma. After all, the Corolla is still often bought as the only car in the family.

However, in a golf class in the back, it is still better to ride together. Then the armrest would not interfere. It is a pity that it is only available starting with the expensive Comfort version. The same applies to the additional socket for rear passengers. Among other shortcomings, which, alas, cannot be eliminated on any version, it should be noted the absence of air duct deflectors for the second row, the only coat hook in the cabin and only one pocket on the back of the front seat.

But after almost half a century, the Japanese finally provided the cover of the hold with a button, which helps to open it from the outside. The same can be done from the key fob or by pulling the lever in the cabin. And when you close the lid, now you won’t get your hands dirty - the engineers fixed it on the upholstery inner handle. The trunk itself is not small, but not huge either - 452 liters, a full-size spare tire rests in the basement, and on the right wall there is a hook for attaching small luggage. The rear view camera on the expensive Style Plus version solves the problem only partially - in bad weather it gets dirty too quickly.

In terms of safety, Corolla managed to become an excellent student. In EuroNCAP tests, the car scored 34 points and earned an "excellent" rating. Of the shortcomings, experts noted only a slight excess of seat belt pressure on the chest during a frontal impact. After driving such a correct, almost reference car, it will be difficult for a novice driver to adapt to another car that has its own temper. In the "Corolla" you can just sit down and go. If you slowly, like in a textbook, release the clutch while adding gas, then you will smoothly move from a place, without the slightest jerk. If you press the right pedal sharper, and practically drop the clutch, the front wheels will slip into slip. For a quicker shifting, it would be nice if the manual gearbox moves were shorter. True, at the lowest speeds in a sluggish jam, the Corolla twitches slightly when releasing or adding gas in modes close to idling. Separately, it is worth noting the nature of cars with a CVT. Corolla is able to smoothly gain momentum and completely imperceptibly change the gear ratio. And you need to start faster and accelerate more vigorously, the electronics will immediately show a very responsive, almost without delay work. All you need to do is press the gas pedal. The motor will rev up militantly to the limiter, and the car will easily leave trailers behind. "CVT" Corolla up to 110-120 km / h is perceived even faster than the "mechanical". Although passport measurements indicate the opposite - the loss in spurt up to a hundred is 0.6 s. The connection seems absolutely rigid. Oh, if not for the overpayment of 30,000 rubles!

And the handling is pretty good too. Of course, not as polished as that of the Golf or Mazda 3, but it allows you to be smart in corners - there will be no sharp breakdowns. It seems that, contrary to modern traditions, the Japanese did not stint on fine-tuning the versions without ESP.
