Despite the high sales figures of the X5 (more than 2.2 million sold cars of the 3rd generation), the engineers of the Bavarian company were not afraid to radically reform the model. The transformation began from the very basics - the new CLAR modular platform replaced the old "trolley". When moving to another base, the SUV seriously enlarged, adding 42 mm in wheelbase, 36 mm in length and as much as 66 mm in body width. At the same time, the overall height was reduced by 17 mm. As a result, the external dimensions of the BMW X5 of the new sample turned out to be as follows: 4922x2004x1745 mm with a center distance of 2975 mm. Taking into account the dimensions and premium status of the "Bavarian", it is not difficult to establish its main competitors - this is the Mercedes-Benz GLE and.

The appearance of the "five" is brought into line with the stylistic line that can be traced in the design of all the latest innovations in the BMW SUV class. The front part of the body of the new generation model is distinguished by a solid radiator grill with branded “nostrils” merged into a single block, upgraded headlights with hexagonal sections of running lights and x-shaped blue elements inside these sections, a more powerful and expressive bumper with impressive air intakes, a hood with bright and aggressive relief of the ribs. Without exception, all versions of the X-fifth are equipped with an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission and BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. The optional Off-Road Package provides the vehicle with a locking rear differential and several special driving modes for off-road driving.

The suspension of the new X5 is composed of a front double wishbone and a rear multi-link. Also offered are electronically controlled shock absorbers, air springs for all four wheels, a rear axle with turning wheels. The steering mechanism is by default able to change the gear ratio.

In November 2013, Russia started accepting applications for the new BMW X5 (index F15). The third generation of the famous "X5" was officially presented during the Frankfurt Motor Show, and its production was launched in the USA, where, as in Europe, sales of new items began a little earlier. Initially, only three modifications of the American-assembled crossover were offered in Russia, but in May 2014, several more versions were added to them, the production of which has already been launched at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad.

Connoisseurs of the classic brutal forms of the "X5" may be upset by the new look of the crossover - after all, the car has acquired some "feminine" features, more dynamic side lines, front and rear design with design elements from current BMW passenger models, as well as sports air intakes along the edges of the front bumper ( driving oncoming flows into the space under the wings). On the other hand, the appearance of the BMW X5 2014-2015 model year has become more modern and approached the new design standards of the Bavarian automaker.

In terms of dimensions, there were no very noticeable changes: the length was extended by 32 mm to 4886 mm, the wheelbase remained at the level of 2933 mm, the width increased by 5 mm and now stands at 1938 mm, and the height is 1762 mm, which is 13 mm lower than its predecessor . Due to the greater use of aluminum and other lightweight materials, the weight of the car has decreased by an average of 90 kg, and the drag coefficient of the body has improved from 0.33 to 0.31. Both parameters significantly influenced the dynamic characteristics of the crossover, but more on that later.

The interior of the BMW X5 crossover has changed much more noticeably. The new architecture of the front panel brought the F15 closer to the modern style of the German automaker, while also improving ergonomics. The quality of the materials used in the interior decoration has become even better, but the fit of some elements, in particular the glove compartment lid, leaves much to be desired. Visibility from the driver's seat has not changed much, since the glazing scheme has remained practically unchanged, but the side mirrors have become slightly smaller, which increased the volume of blind zones.

The layout of the cabin is still five-seater with the possibility of ordering the installation of two more third-row seats for passengers whose height is not higher than 1.5 meters. The level of equipment has become noticeably better: electric front seats with memory settings are already available in the base, a 10.25-inch display flaunts on the center console, and for an additional fee, you can install dual-zone climate control and an entertainment system with two monitors for rear passengers.

The usable trunk space in the third generation of the crossover is noticeably larger than that of its predecessor. In the standard state, the trunk holds 650 liters, but due to the rear row of seats, folding in a ratio of 40:20:40, it can be increased to 1870 liters, not counting the niche under the floor. The upper flap of the trunk lid is equipped with an electric drive, controlled both from a button in the cabin and from a key fob.

Specifications. Initially, the engine line for the 3rd generation BMW X5 offered only three options for the power plant, but after the launch of production in Kaliningrad, three more engines were added to it, which significantly expanded the options.

  • The base version of the xDrive25d received an in-line 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbodiesel with direct injection and a 16-valve timing under the hood, which is capable of producing up to 218 hp. power at 4400 rpm and provide up to 450 Nm of torque in the range from 1500 to 2500 rpm. With the younger engine, the X5 will be able to make a starting jerk from 0 to 100 km / h in an acceptable 8.2 seconds, while the upper speed limit is limited to 220 km / h. As for fuel consumption, the xDrive25d modification eats up about 5.9 liters of fuel on average.
  • The Germans equipped xDrive30d with an N57 D30 in-line diesel engine with six cylinders of 2993 cm³ and a return of 249 hp. at 4000 rpm. The engine is no longer new, well-proven, but has undergone major modernization. In particular, the injection pressure was increased (from 1600 to 1800 bar), the mass of the motor was reduced and the operation of almost all electronic controls was reconfigured. We also note that the diesel is equipped with a new variable geometry turbocharger, third-generation battery injection and Bosch piezoelectric injectors. The engine torque has been increased to 560 Nm at 1500-3000 rpm, which will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds, while the upper speed limit will be 230 km/h. According to the manufacturer's calculations, the average fuel consumption of this engine is at around 6.2 liters.
  • The same diesel engine, but with a triple turbocharging system (N57S), will decorate the engine compartment of the xDriveM50d modification. In this case, the maximum power is about 381 hp. at 4000 - 4400 rpm, and the peak torque falls at around 740 Nm in the range from 2000 to 3000 rpm. Such characteristics will provide the crossover with impressive traction, allowing it to make a starting spurt from 0 to 100 km / h in an almost record-breaking 5.3 seconds for the class, but at the same time it will require at least 6.7 liters of fuel for every 100 km of track.
  • Between the two engines described above, there is another diesel modification - xDrive40d, which received a 6-cylinder 3.0-liter power unit with a capacity of 313 hp, developed at 4400 rpm. Like previous engines, this engine is equipped with direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system. The peak torque of the unit is 630 Nm and is kept in the range of 1500 - 2500 rpm, which allows you to accelerate the crossover from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.1 seconds or reach a maximum speed of 236 km / h, spending about 6.4 liters fuel in the combined cycle.

There will be gasoline engines in Russia, but only two:

  • The role of the base will be performed by the unit designed to modify the xDrive35i. It has 6 cylinders with a displacement of 3.0 liters (2979 cm³), a 24-valve timing, direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system. The maximum power of the junior gasoline engine is 306 hp, developed at 5800 rpm, but the peak torque falls at around 400 Nm, held in the range from 1200 to 5000 rpm. Modification xDrive35i is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.5 seconds or reach 235 km / h of maximum speed, while eating about 8.5 liters of gasoline grade not lower than AI-95.
  • The N63B44 petrol engine with 8 cylinders V-arrangement and an advanced Twin Turbo system is designed for the modification of the "X5" xDrive50i, produced only in the USA. The displacement of this engine is 4395 cm³, and its equipment includes a direct fuel injection system, an air-to-water intercooler, Valvetronic continuously variable valve travel and twin scroll turbochargers. The gasoline engine is capable of producing up to 450 hp. power at 5500 rpm and 650 Nm of torque at 2000 - 4500 rpm, while spending about 10.4 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. As for the dynamic characteristics, with this power unit the crossover is capable of accelerating to a maximum of 250 km / h, while spending no more than 5.0 seconds on the “starting jerk”.

All available engines fully comply with the Euro-6 environmental standard, and in the "Eco Pro" mode they are able to save almost 20% of fuel due to a "cunning" technological solution: at speeds in the range of 50-160 km / h, with the gearbox fully releasing the gas pedal, the gearbox automatically includes neutral, transferring the crossover to coasting. The manufacturer promises another 5% savings due to a “smart” connection with a navigation system, which, knowing the route configuration, will regularly prompt the driver when it is necessary to slow down so that they do not have to resort to braking before turning.

The 8-speed ZF8HP automatic transmission, which first appeared in 2008 on the BMW 760Li sedan, was chosen as the gearbox for all three engines. The "Automatic" was seriously improved by rewriting the control program, reducing its weight and reducing friction losses by 4%.

According to the developers, the BMW X5 is the founder of the SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) class: sports cars for outdoor activities, and therefore, to maintain the appropriate image, driving tests are held in cities that previously hosted the Olympics: Atlanta in 1999 (E53), Athens in 2006 year (E70), but the F15 was "run in" in Vancouver.

In terms of driving performance on paved roads, the crossover added practically nothing, but the off-road patency of the car has noticeably decreased. This is due to the short suspension travel and a decrease in ride height (from 222 mm to 209 mm), which is why it is quite easy to catch on the bottom on large bumps or pits. The crossover is still equipped with the xDrive permanent all-wheel drive system, based on an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the front wheel drive (60% of the thrust goes to the rear axle). Of the changes made, we highlight the reduction in the weight of the transfer case, which also received new settings.

The design of the crossover chassis has remained the same: an independent double wishbone suspension system is used at the front, and a multi-link design is installed at the rear in the basic version and air suspension in the top equipment versions. There were no changes at all: both suspensions had a slightly changed geometry, shock absorbers were retuned, and most components were lightened by increasing the proportion of aluminum.
All wheels of the third generation are equipped with ventilated disc brakes, and the steering is complemented by an electromechanical amplifier.

Options and prices. The manufacturer included 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, all-round parking sensors, a rear-view camera, a safety steering column, advanced power accessories, dynamic cruise control, ABS, DSC, DBC and HDC systems in the basic equipment of the BMW X5 (F15) of the junior xDrive25d modification. , central locking with an emergency sensor, leather interior, dual-zone climate control, a multimedia system, heated front seats with power adjustment and settings memory, ISOFIX mounts, sun protection glazing, power trunk lid and a number of other useful little things.

The starting price for the xDrive25d version of the Russian assembly is 3,415,000 rubles. Modification X5 xDrive30d is offered at a price of 4,395,000 rubles. The xDrive40d version is priced at 5,040,000 rubles, while noticeably less equipped versions of the American assembly xDrive40d can still be ordered at a price of 3,464,000 rubles. Crossovers xDrive M50d, which will not be produced in Russia, are offered by dealers for at least 4,338,000 rubles. The most affordable version of the BMW X5 with a gasoline engine in the face of the xDrive50i modification, also imported from overseas, will cost 3,838,000 so far, but the equipment of this crossover will be an order of magnitude lower than in the xDrive35i version of the Russian assembly, which the Germans estimated at 4,375,000 rubles.

Well, who complained that BMW interiors haven't changed in years? Receive and, as they say, sign! The new "X-fifth" with the internal code G05 became the first model with a modified interior architecture. Metamorphoses are not revolutionary, but quite significant. And the virtual instrument cluster raises the most questions.

The central place on the 12.3-inch display is given to the navigation map, and instead of strict round scales, speedometer and tachometer brackets are drawn, the latter being mirrored and its scale graduated counterclockwise. Such a solution was found on Aston Martin and Peugeot cars, but the BMW variant is more graphically reminiscent of ... a Chinese SUV.

There are many other changes as well. The screen housing of the new iDrive 7.0 media system (it also has a diagonal of 12.3 inches) is now combined with the instrument cluster, the design of the ventilation vents has been changed, and the miniature climate control screens are inscribed between the central vents. The steering wheel has a new hub, a push-button block is installed instead of a rotary switch for outdoor lighting, otherwise the door handles and power window keys are located. And the block of keys and selectors on the central tunnel has also been re-arranged, where the engine start button has also moved.

The BMW X5 will still be available with a third row of seats, and boot volume has been slightly reduced: 645 liters instead of 650 in the five-seat variant and 1860 liters instead of 1870 with the rear seats folded down. Access to the luggage compartment, like all previous X-fifths, is opened by two doors - the main lifting and a small folding one.

The crossover itself has grown slightly with the change of generation. The length has increased by 36 mm (up to 4922 mm), and the increase in width is even greater: plus 66 mm and the final 2004 mm without mirrors. But the height nevertheless decreased by 17 mm (up to 1745 mm).

The wheelbase has grown from 2933 to 2975 mm, and the platform is completely new - it is a crossover version of the CLAR modular "trolley". Moreover, like the seventh series sedan, the new BMW X5 has a double-lever in front, a multi-link in the rear and an optional air suspension on all four wheels, while in cars of the two previous generations, air springs could only be ordered for the rear axle. Also, in terms of the chassis, a rear wheel steering mechanism and an active rear stabilizer are proposed.

In addition to the usual M Sport package, the new crossover also has an off-road kit. It includes reinforced underbody protection, a rear differential lock and several specific driving electronics modes.

Four engines are offered for the new BMW X5 at launch. The base version of the xDrive30d has a three-liter six-cylinder diesel engine with 265 hp. Following are the petrol versions xDrive40i with a three-liter turbo six (340 hp, 450 Nm) and xDrive50i with a V8 4.4 biturbo engine (462 hp, 650 Nm). And at the top of the range is the “charged” BMW X5 M50d, in which a three-liter diesel engine with four turbochargers produces 400 hp. and 760 Nm, and acceleration to 100 km / h takes 5.2 seconds (minus 0.1 seconds compared to the outgoing model). All modifications have an eight-speed "automatic" and all-wheel drive with a front axle clutch. Later, simple rear-wheel drive versions (for America), hybrids and the most powerful BMW X5 M are expected.

What else? For a surcharge, you can order all-round cameras and laser-phosphor high beam, which hits 500 meters against 300 meters for standard LED headlights. Naturally, a quasi-autopilot is provided, which can keep the car in the lane and maintain a distance to the car in front. And behind the fused nostrils, blinds are installed that open the air flow to the radiator only as needed. Wheels - landing diameter from 18 to 22 inches.

Production of the new BMW X5 at the plant in the US Spartanburg should start in late summer. Accordingly, crossovers will hit the market closer to winter. Following the generation change, the coupe-like BMW X6 is also waiting, but in addition, this year the flagship crossover will see the light of day, which will compete with the Mercedes GLS.
