Ford Kuga. atmospheric style

21.09.2019

The power unit went to "Kuga" from its counterpart, which is sold in America as Escape - the overseas division of Ford shared its arsenal with the European cluster, so to speak, from the master's shoulder. The engine was slightly deformed, lowering the power to 150 hp, but the torque remained the same - 230 Nm. The motor is as simple as a manual meat grinder. Of the technical delicacies, one can distinguish a system for changing the valve timing on the intake shaft and the presence of balance shafts. Maybe it's for the better - the simpler, the more reliable.

The "four" in combination with a 6-speed hydromechanical "automatic" is installed only on the mono-drive versions of the Ford Kuga. A crossover equipped like this rides, in general, not bad: it picks up briskly, accelerates vigorously to 2200-2500 rpm ... But then it turns sour. At medium speeds, a lack of traction is clearly felt. And with an increase in gas, you can’t wait for the proper agility from the engine. But if you drive calmly, without demanding the impossible from the engine, the car becomes predictable and even moderately dynamic...

Outcome

Editor:

− In addition to the new engine, we were able to test two of the latest active safety systems: the Active City Stop collision avoidance and automatic braking system, as well as the active parking assistance system. Checked. They work. True, there is a strange feeling that the car can be smarter and faster than the driver ...

Until recently, Ford Kuga was sold on the Russian market with only three engines: gasoline 1.6 EcoBoost with a capacity of 150 and 180 hp. With. yes, a 2.0-liter 150-horsepower diesel engine. Now, the range of power units has been replenished with another engine - an atmospheric gasoline “four” with a volume of 2.5 liters.

This engine was originally intended exclusively for Americans and Canadians - it is installed on the Ford Escape, the American version of Kuga. However, after it turned out that the Russians, unlike the Europeans, treat small-capacity turbo engines with coolness, the time-tested 2.5 Duratec became available to us. But if on Escape it develops 170 hp. s., then for the Russian Kuga the engine was deformed to 150 hp. with., and for us it is even a plus: it will be possible to save on transport tax.

The 2.5-liter Duratec for Russia is aggregated exclusively with a 6-speed automatic, but only front-wheel drive. But the prices do not scare: 999,000 rubles for a car in the Trend configuration and 1,099,000 rubles for a Trend Plus model with 17-inch alloy wheels, climate control, heated front seats and windshield.

For the same money

At first glance, one can only be glad for the Russian buyers of Kuga: firstly, the choice of modifications has become wider, and secondly, the prices for the 2.5 model are by no means exorbitant.

The worm of doubt, however, began to sharpen us immediately, as soon as information about the start of sales of the Kuga 2.5 in Russia appeared: is it possible to buy an all-wheel drive crossover from us for the same money? And the same power? As it turns out, you can. But - with reservations.

In the amount of 1,060,000 rubles we estimate Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4TSI: the same 150 forces, four-wheel drive. The gearbox, however, is exclusively mechanical. And the engine is not atmospheric, but turbocharged.

- in the site review.

Do you want atmospheric? You to the Koreans or the French. With a 171-horsepower engine and all-wheel drive, they ask for only 999,000 rubles! However, high power will entail a rather big transport tax, and the gearbox in such a car will be manual.

Starting price - 1,075,000 rubles; 167 forces, all-wheel drive - available. Here are just a checkpoint - exclusively mechanical, and versions with an "automatic" are significantly more expensive.

For buyers with a 2.0 liter engine, 150 hp. s., who want to meet the amount of 1,100,000 rubles, there is a choice: four-wheel drive and “mechanics” for 1,069,900 rubles or front-wheel drive, but with an “automatic”, in the same configuration, 20,000 rubles cheaper.

If you need a 150-horsepower all-wheel drive crossover, but you don’t want to squeeze the clutch under any circumstances, you can consider buying a slightly more compact Skoda Yeti. Modification 1.8 TSI 4x4 DSG costs 1,046,000 rubles. But this is an option for those who are not afraid of the turbine.

If it scares you, welcome to Mitsubishi or SsangYong dealers.

With engine 2.0 l, 150 l. With. and the variator is estimated at 959,990 rubles. with a 2.0-liter 149-horsepower gasoline engine and a 6-speed "automatic" costs 949,990 rubles. For 1,009,990 rubles you can buy a car with automatic transmission and a diesel engine of the same volume and power.

Resume website

The new Ford Kuga 2.5 turned out to be not expensive and not cheap: on average for cars of this class and the same power level. And if you like Kuga, you want a good “aspirated” with an “automatic” and at the same time suits front-wheel drive - take it safely! Ford's competitors will have the same thing no cheaper. And perhaps even more expensive.

Another question is that the crossover, according to the general opinion of site reviewers, should be all-wheel drive. Simply because front-wheel drive, in fact, turns an SUV into an ordinary passenger car. With all the ensuing consequences in the form of a risk of getting stuck on a slightly muddy dirt road or a snowy parking lot.

So our answer to the question “What is better for a million - a million one hundred thousand?” simple. If the type of box is not important, pay attention to the all-wheel drive modifications of Koleos, Sportage and Tiguan described above. If you need only and exclusively "automatic" - you have to choose between Actyon, ASX and Yeti. Our preferences in the latter case are on the side of the Czech crossover…

I exchanged the first thousand, riding exclusively in Moscow. The average speed is 24 mph. Average consumption 13.2. Zeroed, I will look at the second thousand.
In the area of 500 km a day I traveled a little more actively in sports, the consumption jumped to 13.9 and has only been decreasing since then.
I will describe separately the drive mode and sport
Because there is a significant difference between them.
In D, with a calm, closer to pensioner, driving mode, the engine spins up to 2-2.5 thousand. In order to crit higher, the gas must be pressed deeply. It switches imperceptibly, except for a short howl when switching to the second one, it can be heard without music. The box in D uses 6 gears. Manual switching works, but after a few seconds automatic is restored, quite conveniently. Little traction throughout the rev range. Often I want to push the gas, now the box is used to me and does not juggle gears during acceleration. It waits until I almost let off the gas, then it turns on the lower one. If you turn the motor, the most correct thing is that what is happening can be described with the words howls and does not go.
When you need to reset one gear, it happens quite quickly, within 0.5 seconds, without causing irritation. Another thing is kickdown. For example, at 60, 6th gear is already on. Kickdown resets by 3. It takes 1.5-2 seconds, it's just an eternity. To throw off 1 or 2, you need to adapt to press the gas, it doesn’t always work out. In steady state at 100 km / h in 6th gear, the revolutions are 2000.
S mode
Acceleration in this mode is much more fun, the gas pedal obviously has a different characteristic, and with a slight pressure, it opens the throttle more, a kind of pedal booster. The motor spins up to 2.5 - 3 thousand in normal mode. Holds transmission longer. Once I even threw a lowered one, after a sharp short blow on the brake, straight BMW)). In general, the car in S feels noticeably more high-torque, even if you compare the traction in D and S at the same speed. I can call the thrust in S satisfactory, approximately at the level of ff2 2.0 AT. In S, only 5 gears are used, at least up to 100 km / h the 6th is not included. The manual mode is also turned on with a rocker on the lever, but it no longer goes into the machine, you need to return it to the drive. Manual mode causes jolts when shifting both up and down. The kickdown is faster, possibly due to the fact that the box rarely drops the engine speed below 2000, i.e. as a rule it is enough to throw off 1 gear, even 2, but it is still much faster than 3 in D.
Acceleration to honest 100 km / h (which shows the test mode of the BC) takes 10.5 -11.0 seconds. I'll be more specific when I shoot the video. I did not measure acceleration in D.
Summary
Feelings from D and S differ significantly. The point is not only in the operation of the box, the characteristics of the gas and even the thrust of the engine change. I will suggest that in D the motor is really strangled to 150 hp, and in S they left the original 170. I will repeat this only an assumption and only a dynometer will dot the i, which obviously will have to be done for both modes.
For those who are just getting ready to become a 2.5 owner, I highly recommend taking a test drive.

Having passed TO-1, I am writing my second review (the previous one was published on 01/09/2015). During the first year of operation, the car covered 12,800 kilometers and experienced a replacement of the steering rack (9,600 km) and stabilizer struts (12,500 km) under warranty. I learned about the stabilizer struts from the maintenance man, and the steering rack showed itself suddenly with a tight rotation after starting the engine. Twice I restarted the engine, and the steering was restored, and the third time it continued to rotate with difficulty, despite my tricks. It was possible to drive, but parking was just torment. But these faults did not change the overall positive impression of the car. For me, the unreliability of a car is its inability to move under its own power. And if she goes to the service herself, then everything is not so bad)) Apparently, it is necessary to sin on the quality of components, because the car was operated (St. I want to immediately object to everyone who complains about the huge consumption of gasoline. This, gentlemen, is how you will drive! Pedal to the floor and speed to 4500-5000 - we spend 16-17 liters. We touch the accelerator gently - we fit into 8-9 liters, even traveling through city traffic jams. Well, if you don’t think much about saving and don’t famously start from the intersection, then 10-11 liters is the norm. I will say the same about the supposedly small trunk. We lay out the rear seats, move the passenger seat forward, and carry in the cabin a Christmas tree, a disassembled bunk bed, two bicycles, laminate packages, skirting boards, etc. Not all at once, of course, but the cubic capacity of the trunk is good, although four tires, admittedly, do not fit in the trunk in an upright position. By TO-1, the front brake pads are worn out by 50%, the rear ones by 30%. On TO-2, the front ones will definitely have to be changed. Active drivers, as the service master told me, change the front pads already at the first MOT. Brake fluid had to be topped up due to worn pads. Taking into account the removal and installation of crankcase protection, the cost of the first maintenance at an authorized dealer was 13,099 rubles.

The advantages and disadvantages of the 2018-2019 Ford Kuga in a new body are identified based on feedback from real owners. More detailed pros and cons of the 2nd generation Ford Kuga 2.5 and 1.5 turbo with automatic, front-wheel drive and 4x4 all-wheel drive can be found in the stories below:

Owner reviews

The car is comfortable for long hauls over 1,000 km per day. We drove both on highways and on military primers, climbed along scree roads into the mountains (without extreme sports) - Kuga 2 rides confidently, taxis when sliding, does not go back when stopping on a reverse slope, you can start off calmly as if on a flat one.

Up to 140 km / h, the speed is not particularly felt, it becomes noisy faster and vibrations appear, but the course keeps confidently and at 160. The machine as a whole is balanced, it has no frankly weak points.

The turbocharged engine in the city pulls quite briskly, for sharp overtaking on the highway there is a Sport, or with a button down.

The suspension is more urban on country roads, you won’t go fast, it will pass through a virgin field, along rainy forest roads, along a flat beach, it steers nicely. For 30,000 km nothing has arisen, the interval between maintenance is 15,000 km. The overall impression is a typical urban crossover: comfortable, peppy, with its pleasant little things.

But at the same time, I don’t like the layout: the body is narrow, tall and elongated (compared to classmates). The wide A-pillar blocks the side view, the mirrors do not fold all the way and eventually stick out, there is a backlight for the legs, it’s not clear why, but there is no backlight for the glove box, the tailgate has a closing handle on only one side, so when the right hand is busy, you need to contrive to get it close and the move is quite hard, a weak woman will have to hang on it.

You can switch the speed on the automatic gearbox in manual mode. Very comfortable seats, you sit in the car like in a spacecraft. Nice flat square boot space with the rear seats folded down.

Ford Kuga II holds the road perfectly, the car is very maneuverable when driving around the city. And it's very cool to refuel gasoline: I opened the hatch and there are no traffic jams, put the gun in and took out the gun, clean and comfortable.

Gasoline consumption fell sharply after 40,000 km, the car began to consume 2 liters less gasoline. It's strange, why such a long break-in period? The trunk in rainy weather sometimes does not open from the foot on the first try. Doors also sometimes (very rarely) do not open on the first try with keyless entry.

Yes, the side windows in the rain for some reason get dirty very quickly. There was only one complaint - after 35,000 km, the engine cooling bypass failed, it was changed under warranty, despite the fact that he never came to MOT, he changed the oil and filter on his own.

Video review

A very comfortable and pleasant car to drive, many options, a chic panoramic roof, excellent bi-xenon, a very convenient famous door that opens with your foot, excellent seats that have shown themselves very well on long trips (1,300 km without stopping you can safely drive), good finishing materials interior, decent dynamics, good brakes, very good noise isolation, comfortable suspension, sharp steering, the car is comfortable at speeds up to 200 km / h.

But there are also jambs: the box squeaks, pushes and kicks, the steering rack knocks and asks for a replacement, the props crunch, the saber rubbed holes in the back door to the metal, the keyless entry falls off, the music is full of noise, the steering column clicks, the speedometer is crooked, the hood vibrates at idle, the tailgate either opens or not from the foot, something creaks, taps, rattles, the tire pressure monitoring system does not work, the washer level sensor too ...

In addition to this, I encountered a complete reluctance of official dealers to do anything within the framework of their warranty obligations. Complete from the word "absolutely". Frostbitten boys. And I received exactly the same attitude from the head Russian Ford ...

Dmitry Gaidash, drives a Ford Kuga 1.6 (182 hp) AWD automatic 2016

Where can I buy?

After being picked up, we drove the first 200 km - the average consumption showed 8.6 liters. In the city, consumption with all warm-ups and idling showed 13.9 liters. It's a smooth ride.

You understand, while I run in, I do not force. Departure was out of town, at a distance of 200 km one way — consumption has already shown 7.3 liters. I fill in the 92nd gasoline, the seller advised me to drive only on the 92nd, I don’t know how correct it is, what are you filling in?

Now the mileage is already in the region of 900 km. The car warms up very quickly, 5-10 minutes and the temperature arrow went up. It feels like it’s not a car, but an airplane, it’s quiet, calm and comfortable inside. The seats also warm up very quickly.

Another big plus, which was paid attention to, is blowing the rear passengers. On Kuga, it is a plus for heating the legs. I don't think so on the CX-5. We carry a child in the back. Another plus is the tilt-adjustable rear row seats.

I started the car even at -30 degrees (after 12 hours of inactivity), there are no hints at all that the Kuga will not start. The salon is warm, and in the current frosts I sit freely in a T-shirt.

As for handling - generally a buzz. Neither ice nor snow porridge is felt between the lanes. When overtaking everything is smooth and calm, you sit high, the review is excellent. Rubber costs Nokia 5 R17 (received as a gift from the salon).

Review of Ford Kuga 1.5 turbo (150 hp) with automatic and all-wheel drive 2018

I will compare Kuga with my former Suzuki Grand Vitara. Exterior. Like the front. Still, the muzzle adorned this unit. I do not like the previous body (the front of some squinted). Nothing has changed on the side, indifferent. Behind a little changed for the better.

Salon. The width on the front row is the same as on the Suzuki. The seats are more comfortable. I settled down immediately, the lumbar support is good, as well as the lateral one. The right leg does not get tired.

The heated front windshield is a wonderful thing, perhaps the most useful after the air conditioner. There is no need to wait for the engine to heat up, and when, in turn, the warm air heats the glass, which means that there is no need to make ridiculous movements with the scraper.

It is quite spacious under the hood, but the neck for washing centimeters is a little higher - it would be more convenient. Here's what I definitely don't like is the lack of a dipstick to check the oil in the automatic transmission.

Suspension. Compromise solution. I can evaluate quite objectively, since every day I go to work and from work along the same path (expensive). In those places where I remembered everyone, starting with the road builders and ending with our supreme power, with bad words, now I fly by unnoticed, well, or almost unnoticed.

Engine. What he wanted, he got. A simple volumetric aspirator. Someone may not have enough traction, but I have enough wave, and in extreme cases there is a sport mode. That's just to serve (change the oil) once every 15,000 km. For me it's a clear blasphemy.

The owner drives a 2016 Ford Kuga 2.5 (150 HP) AT AWD.

I have a standard equipment, but it has everything you need. Front drive. The car holds fine and dry road, and a big downpour with puddles. Someone wrote that Kuga does not eat rut - they lie! Normally Ford digests it, any car will feel this lack of our roads. In a normal smear, outside the asphalt and after the rain, the car drives confidently and does not grimace.

Kug's handling is excellent and turns perfectly, even on a circular. With a high-speed approach, there is no roll! Do not listen to anyone, since I also read somewhere that it is very heeling.

This is my first automatic, and it seems to me that the mechanics would be faster. Gear shifting slower than expected. Also frustrating expense. On the highway at a speed of 110-130 km / h, 9.5 - 10 liters are needed, and at 140-150 - already 10-11 liters. In the city - 12 liters.
