In 1993, AvtoVAZ began developing a car, which in 1998 was named Lada Kalina. The finished prototype of the new model in a four-door body was demonstrated only in 2000, and the first Lada Kalina sedan came off the assembly line of AvtoVAZ OJSC only on November 18, 2004. This time delay resulted in the Kalina being effectively obsolete even before its production began. However, mathematical modeling was used in the work on the car, and the production of parts, their welding, painting, assembly rose to a radically high quality level in comparison with the rest of the plant's products. Further development model range was marked by the release of cars with a new 1.4-liter engine and the appearance of cars in hatchback and station wagon bodies, as well as sports version and installing a more powerful 16-valve 1.6-liter engine. If in 2005 the plant assembled 40,000 cars, then in 2009 60,746 cars were sold, as a result of which Lada Kalina becomes one of the most popular models in Russia. On May 1, 2011, the AvtoVAZ press service announced that the plant was ending production of the Lada Kalina car in a sedan body, replacing it with a new budget car Lada Granta. On March 1, 2013, the production of the first generation Lada Kalina was discontinued due to the modernization of the conveyor for the production of a second generation car.


Lada Kalina was offered in the trim levels "Standard", "Norma", "Lux", but during the release the level of the proposed trim levels was repeatedly increased. So, for example, some versions got air conditioning, parking sensors, a standard audio system, and more. modern equipment. Many technical and design solutions, now already common for the products of the Volga Automobile Plant, were first applied to the Lada Kalina: this is a power steering in basic equipment, new opportunities for interior transformation, original color schemes. The first engine for Lada Kalina was an 8-valve power unit with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 81 hp. This slightly modernized engine was developed on the basis of the 1.5-liter engine from the Priora VAZ-11183, which in turn traced its lineage back to the G8 engine of the early 80s. This is a fairly unpretentious and quite economical power unit. But time demanded a new engine, and in 2007 a 1.4-liter 16-valve engine becomes such. Its power was 89 hp, torque 127 Nm at 4500 rpm. New engine Kalina added agility: acceleration to 100 km takes 12 seconds, and fuel consumption at 90 km / h is only 5 liters per 100 km in suburban and 7 liters in mixed mode. Motors new series, together with the 16-valve 1.6-liter 98-horsepower unit that appeared later, became more powerful, economical, but also vulnerable - when the timing belt breaks, the valves bend, which imposes increased requirements for operation.

Suspension Lada Kalina largely inherits the development of the previous front wheel drive models VAZ: "Samara", LADA 110, "Priora" - however, there are nuances. Stabilizer used in the front suspension roll stability own design, lower arms suspensions are mounted through original brackets, other racks with springs are installed. In design rear suspension torsion-lever type, original suspension arms and springs are also used. Due to its relatively short length, Lada Kalina has excellent maneuverability, which is especially important when traveling around the city.

The AvtoVAZ frontal crash test with pillows and belts with pretensioners and limiters showed a protection result of 8.4 points out of 16. In 2005, the car was tested according to the ARCAP method (“Autoreview”), where it scored 5.6 points out of 16 in a frontal impact and 13.5 points out of 16 with lateral. In fairness, it should be noted that even with a strict approach to safety testing, the car showed more high score than all previously produced previous VAZ models.

The use of the previous front-wheel drive platform and nodes provided the Lada Kalina with an affordable price, but at the same time the inheritance of the disadvantages inherent in domestic cars which this model has replaced. On the other hand, the simplicity of design, maintainability and, at the same time, a qualitatively different approach to configurations made this model attractive to a buyer who is ready for the sake of low price put up with some disadvantages. So Lada Kalina became the first successful "swallow" for VAZ in the transition period from cars of the Soviet design to more modern ones. In terms of affordability and supply, Kalina of the first generation also occupies a strong position in the secondary market.

Yes, the four-door modification was the first-born of the entire family, which now has several versions. High-tech style, noble body design and a revolution in the appearance of the car - these are the main advantages of the model. Thanks to them, Kalina became popular. Moreover, the car in the sedan took first place in sales: this modification was ahead of the hatchback by a thousand cars in 2009. But what is the four-door Kalina? It is dynamic, progressive and roomy car, which is relatively small in size. Despite the presence of a spacious trunk, the length of the sedan is within 4 meters. Such a short body is ideal for city traffic jams, and finding parking next to shopping mall noticeably simplified: even the width of Kalina is only 1.7 meters. When looking at the sedan from the side, you can see the high stern. This design decision made it possible to increase the volume of the trunk and complement the design of Kalina: a high trunk is better combined with a high body and a large glass area. But in general, there are no huge differences from the hatchback - the sedan only has four doors and a slightly increased body length. The rest of the modifications are identical.
