Daytime running lights (DRL) in headlights, fog lights, turn signals, installed separately, but where they are not installed. Are there any rules at all? regulate the installation of DRL? Is it possible install DRL yourself? They also say that they consume many times less energy, and therefore you save on gasoline. Everything in order..

What are DRLs and what are they for?

"Daytime running lights" have nothing to do with side lights. This new concept appeared in the rules due to the fact that they began to equip modern cars. This term refers to external lighting fixtures designed to improve the visibility of the moving vehicle front in daylight hours days. On new European cars you can often find lights in the headlights that stand out structurally in it. Most DRLs are LED bulbs. When using day running lights additional light signals (fog or dipped beam) are not required.

Rules for installing DRL

Excerpt from " State standard of the Russian Federation GOST R 41.48-2004 (UNECE Regulation N 48)":

GOST R 41.87-99 (UNECE Regulation N 87). According to the rules, daylight emitters must occupy an area of 25 cm to 200 cm (in Russia "not less than 40 cm") and emit light with a power of 400 to 1200 cd (in Russia from 400 to 800 cd).

This standard establishes uniform provisions concerning the approval of daytime running lamps for motor vehicles.
According to this GOST, all certified running lights must have the appropriate designation.

Table 6a - Requirements of the UNECE Regulations for the presence of external lighting devices on vehicles:

  • Daytime running light: White, 2 pcs.
  • Recommended for categories M, N. (passenger and utility vehicles, trucks)
  • Prohibited for categories O (trailers with two or more axles, trailers with a central axle and semi-trailers)

How to connect daytime running lights

DRL connection diagrams many, some of them are very simple, others require some experience with a soldering iron. All of them allow you to turn on the running lights automatically:

Scheme No. 1. Headlights turn on automatically when driving and turn off when stopped. When parked, the car is marked parking lights.
Such an algorithm for the operation of the outdoor lighting system fully complies with the requirements of traffic rules.
The scheme was tested on all Russian cars.
The source of information about the movement is the vehicle speed sensor
Contacts K 1.1 of the low beam headlight switch are included in the wire break from the low beam switch to terminal 85 of the RBS. (if you need to turn on the low beam on the spot, then you need to parallelize the contacts of the low beam switch).
Relay K1 - automotive, 851.3747, but any one that has a breaking pair of contacts and works stably at a voltage on the winding of 6 ... 14 V can be used. For example, RES10, passport: RS4.529.031-07.
V. Yugrin Radio №8, 2005

Scheme No. 2. Using PTF in daylight mode and automatically turning them off along with the ignition.

Disable staff scheme turn on the PTF and remake it to turn on after turning the ignition key.
Any thyristor with a permissible current of 0.3 A is suitable. A 1500 microfarad 25 Volt capacitor will produce 23 seconds. delays. Resistors should be from 0.25 W to 47 (51) and 10 kilo ohms.
It is convenient to place the circuit in the relay case by surface mounting and place it in mounting block. We also take the plus we need after the ignition switch.

Procedure:

  1. We disconnect the negative wire to power the winding of the power window relay and isolate it.
  2. Find the wire going to PTF key, disable it from regular place and insert instead of disabled in paragraph 1
  3. Insert finished structure into the socket.
Scheme No. 3. Turning on the PTF when starting the engine (generator).
The scheme is used on the VAZ 2110.
The headlights will turn on automatically when the generator is started. The engine is started - the generator is running - the PTFs are turned on, it does not work - vice versa.
The dimensions are turned on by the button and the ignition switch is open at the same time.
The essence of this method is to install a jumper from the power supply of the excitation winding of the generator to the PTF relay.
  • We remove the tidy and do as in photo 1.
  • We take out PTF button and disconnect the corner wiring from the plug photo 2.3.
  • We connect it to our wire (12 on connector X1 of the device), photo 4.

Insert into free place on the plug and put the button in place.
Scheme No. 4. Implementation of DRL using low beam. The principle of operation is the same as in scheme No. 3, the dipped headlights turn on after the engine starts and turn off when it stops, while the dimensions are turned off. Everything else works as normal.
You will need two low-power diodes (1A, for example KD10) and we connect them in series. Solder wires to them. overall length about 40cm. Because the diode is polar, then they should be connected as shown in the photo.
We disassemble the dashboard and connect the workpiece with the 12th pin of the X1 connector, as in the photo (the color of the wire is yellow, but the essence is the same).
We take out the button for turning on the lighting and connect the second end of our workpiece to the green wire of the connector. Or insert the stripped wire into the socket of the connector. We insert the button into place and check the performance.

If you need to stand with the dimensions when the engine is running without dipped headlights, then we put the button in the cut of the wire.
Scheme No. 5. Automatic on/off daylight on/off generator.
The schemes were tested on Lada Priora and VAZ 2110.
  1. The first scheme - if only the work of the generator and the handbrake is tied.
  2. The second circuit contains another transistor that turns off the DRL when the dimensions or headlights are turned on by supplying "+" to the base of the KT814 transistor.
  3. The third scheme of Roman Toropov. It cancels the DRL under the following conditions: The handbrake is raised (for autostarting the internal combustion engine from an alarm or parking with the internal combustion engine running) and for turning on the dimensions (transferring to the normal operation mode of the headlights or PTF). In other words, these conditions disable " automatic switch on DRL" to start the generator. This is the DRL scheme, which passed the TRP.

Scheme No. 6. Auto-turn on DRL when starting the engine and turn off from the dimensions / dipped beam. (oil level sensor)
The scheme was tested on the VAZ 2110.
In this version, the engine operation signal is taken from the minimum oil pressure sensor (from the instrument panel block). Running lights turn off if you turn on the dimensions or dipped beam.
PTF or dipped beam can be used as running lights.

Scheme No. 7. Automatic inclusion of DRL when the engine is started, and work at half strength when turning on PTF or near.
The scheme was tested on the VAZ 2110.
When the engine (generator) is started, the DRL lights up. When the dimensions are turned on, the work of the DRL continues, and when the PTF or dipped beam is turned on, the DRL begins to shine at half strength. This is due to the switching of relay 2 when the circuit is energized when the PTF or dipped is turned on. And also due to the resistor, which we have in front of the DRL on the excitation wires from the PTF and the neighbor. We use a diode so that the power of one device does not flow into another device.
Scheme No. 8. The inclusion of DRL after starting the engine after 7 seconds. Goes out when switched on.
The scheme was tested on the VAZ 2110.
When the engine is turned off, the running lights go out. There is no additional load at the factory. When blinking high beam, DRLs do not go out.

For example, the button is located in the console next to the heater control unit. This is a manual shutdown. We hook the assembled circuit to the clips to the fuse box. It is convenient to assemble the delay circuit itself in the case of a non-working relay.

Scheme No. 9 (Author on Skype: polimarh16). With the start of the movement, the dipped beam turns on and the interior lighting turns off.
The illumination in the door handles turns on when the engine is running and only when the car is stationary.
There is a free contact on the relay, to which it is connected additional illumination interior (for example, illumination of door handles)

Full description of the circuit: insert the ignition key, and turn it one notch. The low beam turns on for a few seconds and goes out. We start the engine. The interior lighting (door handles and LED strip) turns on. With the start of the movement, the dipped beam is turned on, and the interior lights are turned off. After stop- reverse procedure, but with a delay of a few seconds. The delay time is provided by R3 and C2. The larger they are, the longer the duration.
The board is placed for the instrument cluster on a double adhesive tape and is connected there to the X2 connector and to the near, dimensions / far switch.

Auto headlight controllers

Who is not friends with electricians and is happy to buy a ready-made automatic headlight switch, you can use:
  1. Automatic switching on of outdoor lighting (controllers LC-7-V09, LC-7-V10, LC-7-V09U)
  2. DRL Headlight Control Controller (Daytime Running Lights)

Daytime running lights are an essential part of automotive exterior lighting. Therefore, such an element of the car's lighting system must be present. You can also buy daylight lights from us, for this, just go to. Universal daytime lights suitable for any car, choose your favorite option that will suit the design of the car and will look not only as a means of safety, but also as a stylish device. But it is worth remembering that before installation, you need to know the rules and installation requirements, as well as clearly know. Otherwise, the stylish element of the exterior of the car will only bring damage.

It is worth first clarifying that daytime running lights have nothing to do with marker lights, since many drivers confuse them. Dimensions are lights that are designed to indicate a car in dark time days, and the use of DRL allows you to designate the vehicle during the day.

Cars have been designated relatively recently, and the peak occurred after the Economic Commission for Europe passed a law on driving during the day with headlights on. Many initially used low or high beams, which in principle is allowed and permissible today in many European countries. But, as practice has shown, turning on the low beam is not only inefficient, but also problematic for the battery, since it wears out faster. Therefore, LED products were specially created, which are placed separately from the head optics and perform the function of marking a car on the track, thereby increasing safety.

They, unlike the head optics, shine brighter and more intensely, have white light and consume a minimum of electricity during operation. It's all about the possibilities LED lamps. Today, only such an innovative development allows you to get a maximum of white light, with minimal energy consumption. On average, DRLs of any manufacturer consume up to 5-6 W, which is 10 times less compared to a 55 W halogen! In addition, some diodes, especially CREE, can last up to 50 thousand hours, due to the fact that they do not have the ability to get very hot during operation, so they rarely burn out!

Since 2011, according to the rules of the EEC (Economic Commission for Europe), all vehicles have to travel even in daytime with headlights on or use LED DRLs. The law was passed in order to reduce the number of accidents that occur during the day due to the dullness and inconspicuousness of cars. Thus, DRL is that element of your active safety, which will mark the car on the track and make it catchy.

(UNECE Regulation No. 48):

  • Location. Daytime running lights must be installed in front of the vehicle, it is strictly forbidden to place the module on trailers.
  • Quantity. The car must have DRLs in the amount of two pieces - on the right and on the left.
  • Scheme. According to the installation scheme, there are no special regulations and rules.
  • By width. DRLs should be placed no more than 400 mm from the edges of the vehicle, while maintaining a distance of 600 mm between the two modules. It is worth noting that if the car is small-sized, that is, its width does not exceed 1300 mm, then allowable distance between lights - 400 mm.
  • Height. Installation should be carried out in such a way that the DRLs are from 250 to 1500 mm from the road level.
  • By lenght. There are no clear instructions for the installation of DRLs in this paragraph, but the requirement obliges the lights to be located in such a way that they do not interfere with the driver and are not reflected in the rear-view mirrors of the vehicle.
  • Corner. Outward and inward, the so-called horizontal angle beta is 20 o, and down and up horizontally, that is, the vertical angle alpha is 10 o.
  • Glow activation. Binding Rules running lights are automatically turned on when the engine of the car is started, or turned off with the engine stopped. Also, DRLs should automatically turn off at the same time as the headlights are turned on. An exception can only be those cases when the dipped / main beam is turned on for a short period of time.

  • DRLs should occupy from 25cm 2 to 200cm 2 of area (it should be noted that in Russia this figure should be at least 40cm 2).
  • Force luminous flux should be in the range from 400 to 1200 cd (for Russia - from 400 to 800 cd).
  • The color of the DRL glow is exclusively white, blue, blue, and so on are not allowed.

These are all the installation rules that are mandatory for DRLs, which every driver must follow in order not to get. If all requirements are taken into account during installation, then the use of daytime running lights will be legal and simple. Therefore, now you know how to properly install running lights, and it remains to figure out how to properly connect running lights.

Rules for connecting DRL

Considering that DRLs are an important part of automotive lighting, it is not enough just to know, but you also need to connect them correctly. The connection of the lights must be made in such a way that the lights automatically light up, and also dim when the passing beam is turned on, or even deactivate altogether. This is monitored by the control unit for LED modules, and accordingly, it should be installed correctly.

  1. The black wire is connected to the "-" terminal.
  2. The red wire is connected to the "+" terminal.
  3. Orange wire (in some DRL models) - connects to low beam or dimensions. Thus, if you do not connect this wire, the lights will not automatically turn off when the low beam or dimensions are activated.

To check the correct connection, before installing the DRL and assembling the bumper, you need to activate the car's ignition and see if the light on the control unit lights up. If yes, then you did everything right, and you can safely complete the installation process.

Outcome

Thus, if you bought a DRL, then before you start the process of installation and connection, be sure to read all the requirements and rules. Read carefully, because with the wrong location, and even more so connection, you are already violating the legislation of the Russian Federation and risk getting decent fines. In any case, if you carefully and conscientiously approach the essence of the matter, you can install, connect daylight lights and independently. Be careful, check the location of the lights and the correct connection of the wires. And only then can you enjoy high-quality snow-white LED light and feel complete security on road.

To highlight the vehicle on the road during daylight hours, it is equipped with daytime running lights. Their installation is optional, since you can use the headlights, but this lighting has a number of disadvantages. You can choose, install and connect DRL in a car with your own hands, even without special knowledge in electrical engineering

What are daytime running lights

Daytime running lights (DRL) are a light source that is directed forward and improves the visibility of the vehicle (TC) when driving during daylight hours. In 2010, a decree was issued in Russia that states that all vehicle owners must move in the daytime with the low beam headlights on. If we turn to statistics, the number of accidents after the entry into force of the decree has decreased markedly. From this follows the high efficiency of the use of DRL. In addition, such lighting allows you to give the car a certain personality.

Purpose of DRL

So we found out that led lights allow you to mark the car on the road during daylight hours, and this is especially important in bright sunny weather or in summer rain. If you turn on the parking lights, then the vehicle will remain unnoticed, which is associated with a lower strength of the emitted light. The light from the dimensions is suitable for night time. Some motorists may have a question - what is the difference between DRL and low beam headlights? Yes, you can drive with dipped beam, this is not prohibited by law, but there are some nuances that you need to know about:

  1. The service life of lamps and optics in general is reduced. When using expensive lighting equipment its replacement will require considerable financial costs.
  2. When the dipped beam is turned on, the parking lights are turned on at the same time, and the dashboard. This leads to an increase in energy consumption and, accordingly, increased consumption fuel.

From the above, we can conclude: the purchase and installation of DRL will be the right decision. There is an opinion that this type of lighting can be replaced by fog lights (PTF), but in reality it is not so. For fog lights, the power consumption is similar to the power of dipped beam headlights.

Daytime running lights allow you to mark the car on the road during daylight hours and make driving safer

Advantages

The design under consideration consists of LED elements. DRLs are endowed with a special mode of operation when they are connected when the engine is started. This can be done by selecting one of the lamp connection schemes below or by installing equipment with a control unit. When the dipped beam headlights are turned on, the DRL power is reduced by 50%, as a result of which this light source works as additional dimensions. Equipping a car with running lights simultaneously solves several problems:

  1. No need to constantly remember to turn on the headlights.
  2. LEDs are characterized by much lower power consumption compared to conventional lamps used in headlights.
  3. Compared to high beams, DRLs do not dazzle oncoming drivers.
  4. The light beam of the daytime running lights has an increased light spot size.

One of the important advantages of DRLs is their special design for marking vehicles on the road. Compared to dipped headlights, they provide more light that is visible to other drivers.

The DRL installation has a number of advantages, one of which is the high brightness of the glow, in contrast to the dipped beam.

How to choose

Many car owners are wondering about the choice of DRL. There are many options for this lighting system, and sometimes it is not very easy to make a choice. To make the right decision, you need to consider the size, shape, place where the equipment will be installed. In addition, attention is paid to the brightness of the glow and the manufacturer. Let's dwell on each moment in more detail.

In shape, as well as in size, DRLs can be very diverse. The body shape of LED equipment can be round, oblong, triangular or square. It is also possible to construct from individual parts interconnected by a wire. Before you purchase and install one or another option, you need to find out if it fits in size and how it will look on your car. It is also important to determine the installation location in accordance with GOST and taking into account the car bumper. To date, DRLs are the most popular rectangular shape in a cast case. Their installation is possible on almost any car, which will make it more attractive.

Now as for the brightness of the glow. Basically, the system under consideration consists of two blocks, which are mounted on the left and right on the front of the car. Each of the blocks includes a certain number of LEDs (1–12 pcs.). Depending on the number of elements, the brightness of the glow will be different. The standard block of daytime running lights consists of 5 LEDs, but this option is not suitable for every car. The arrangement of elements can be done at the bottom, at the top or in the middle. Important point: the color of the glow of the diodes should be white, i.e., a temperature of 5-6 thousand K (kelvin) and a luminous intensity of 400 cd (candela).

The service life, characteristics and overall performance of LED equipment will depend on the choice of the manufacturer. The most popular in the field of optics are companies such as Hella, Osram, Philips. The equipment of these companies is different high quality and reliability. There are a number of other manufacturers, but they are inferior in terms of lighting characteristics to the brands overpowered above.

DRL have various forms, characteristics, design features, can be installed in different places the front of the car

How to choose the right DRL? The main rule that should be followed should be the high brightness of the LED elements. It is advisable to choose those devices that have a current consumption of 0.5–1 A. At the same time, power is far from always an indicator of the effectiveness of daytime running lights. Some experts are of the opinion that the light beam of LED lights should be in the range of 550–700 cd. It is this light intensity that makes the vehicle visible from a distance of more than 1 km. In addition to the rectangular shape, round is no less popular, since such running lights are characterized by effective work reflectors.

Preference should also be given to those devices whose body is made of aluminum. This allows them to be equipped with more powerful LED elements, since the metal is endowed with high heat dissipation, which contributes to better cooling when installing light sources with high efficiency. If we consider best option in terms of installation, attention should be paid to those devices that have a direct connection to the battery, bypassing the ignition system. The principle of operation of such equipment involves switching on when a certain voltage is reached. onboard network car.

Legal regulations for the installation of DRL

It is important to know and take into account the requirements for the selection and installation of LED lights:

  • the number of LED blocks should be no more than 2 pieces;
  • it is forbidden to install DRL on trailers;
  • the inclusion of running lights should occur automatically;
  • the lighting unit must be round or rectangular;
  • depending on the location of the DRL, the size may vary: smaller devices are installed on the air intake, larger ones on the bumper;
  • LED blocks should have a brightness of 150-330 lumens, while the number of elements and their size is chosen independently.

During the installation process, it is important to consider:

  • headlights can be used instead of running lights high beam or foglights;
  • there are no special requirements for the connection scheme;
  • daytime running lights should be located at a distance of no more than 40 cm from the edge of the car body;
  • the distance between DRLs must be at least 60 cm, and with a car width of less than 130 cm, it can be reduced to 40 cm;
  • when installed, the navigation lights are directed forward, while the horizontal angle should be equal to 20 ˚, vertically 10 ˚;
  • the operation of running lights with a stroboscopic effect is prohibited;
  • LEDs should light up when the engine is started and go out after turning on the head optics.

It is worth noting that self-installation DRL is allowed and legal in accordance with the Decree of the Russian Federation No. 720, which dates back to September 2009. In this case, it is important not to fall under the restrictions of GOST, which requires certification of compliance with any changes in the design of the vehicle.

Installation of DRL on a car must be carried out taking into account current regulations

How to install on a car with your own hands

First of all, it is worth saying that for the installation of the system in question, the following list of materials and tools will be required:

  • pliers;
  • wire cutters;
  • soldering iron;
  • insulated two-wire wire;
  • LED blocks;
  • relay for 12V;
  • reed switch;
  • single wire;
  • plastic clamps.

Depending on the scheme and installation location, the list may be different. When using DRL Chinese made, before installation, it is recommended to treat the case with a sealant to prevent water from entering inside. Consider several options for circuits with which you can connect DRL.

Wiring diagrams for daytime running lights

One of the most simple options- automatic inclusion of navigation lights when the ignition is turned on and the engine is started. The schema has no additional elements: LED equipment is connected to the power supply of the on-board network: plus to the ignition switch, minus to ground (body). With this installation, special skills and knowledge in terms of electrical engineering are not required.

Scheme that implements the inclusion of daytime running lights automatically when the ignition is turned on

There is another scheme that is similar to the first one, but the difference is that the running lights turn off when the dipped headlights are turned on. The differences are that the positive wire is connected, as in the previous diagram, and the negative wire is connected to the “+” of the low beam lamps. The operation of such a circuit is due to the fact that conventional lamps are characterized by high current consumption than LEDs and lower resistance. As a result, the lamp will not work even half-heartedly, and this will not affect the operation of navigation lights in any way. At the moment the dipped beam is turned on, a “+” will appear on the negative wire of the DRL, which will lead to their shutdown. But at the same time, turning on the high beam will lead to the launch of the running lights. In this case, DRL can be connected to the dimensions.

The scheme in which DRLs are launched when the parking lights are turned on

For following scheme you will need an element such as a reed switch. In it, DRLs work when the engine is started and running. We connect the negative wire from the LED equipment to ground, and the positive wire to the 30th contact of the relay, 87th contact to the "+" battery or any wire with a large cross-sectional diameter, 85th contact of the relay is connected to total weight, 86 to one of the contacts of the reed switch. The second output of the reed switch is connected to any “+”, for example, to a battery or generator. Next, we start the engine and by moving the reed switch we find the position at which the relay will operate and the LEDs will work. We fix the reed switch, which is previously placed in a heat shrink tube, using a plastic tie to the generator in the appropriate position. If there is no reed switch, then you can slightly redo the circuit by connecting 86 contact to the oil pressure lamp, which is located on the instrument panel. As a result, the navigation lights will come on when the engine is started.

The inclusion of DRL can be implemented when starting the engine through the use of a reed switch

Installation locations

Many car owners install LED lighting far from the rules. Therefore, you need to figure out in what places you can install this type of lighting equipment:

  1. One of the installation methods is on the radiator grill from below. The car owner chooses running lights based on his preferences.
  2. Installing DRLs from below or above the grille, using LED strips. This is one of the options that is not considered by law as DRL, since the LED strip is more of a tuning element than a lighting element.
  3. Installation of LEDs around the perimeter of the radiator grille. The option does not comply with the safety rules of the vehicle.
  4. Installation led strip V head optics. Widespread on VAZ cars of the tenth generation. This method of installation meets the requirements of operation and is approved for use.
  5. Installation of daytime running lights in the places provided for PTF (foglights). This option is authorized for operation and meets safety requirements. In most cases, round-shaped lanterns are used for this method. But since fog lights can be used instead of running lights, this option is not very popular.

Installation and connection process

We start work with the selection of a place. At this stage, it is important to take into account not only the dimensions of the car and the method of attachment, but also recommendations for installation. Running lights must be located at a height of 350 mm to 1500 mm from the roadway. The minimum height is 250 mm, but if the car is operated with a load, the body will lower. This point must be taken into account. Depending on what type of vehicle DRLs are installed on, optimal parameter height can be in the range from 400 mm to 800 mm.

DRL kit, depending on specific model device, consists of LEDs, wires, mounting brackets, instructions and control unit

The next step is the installation of running lights. When buying equipment, the kit must contain everything you need: LEDs, wires, instructions and other materials. When installing DRL in the grille, it will need to be removed. The place where the bracket will be mounted must be washed and degreased. Then a double-sided adhesive tape is glued, the shape of which corresponds to the shape of the bracket. After removing the protective layer, a bracket is attached to the adhesive tape. Before the clamp is fixed, they stretch the wire that comes from the body. Experts recommend making the mount more reliable and not relying only on adhesive tape. In this case, holes are drilled, and fastening is carried out using self-tapping screws. Even when mounting on adhesive tape, they are fixed on self-tapping screws.

One of the most popular places for installing DRLs is the radiator grille.

The next step is to install the control unit. It is best to place the unit near the battery, but away from the engine to avoid overheating. Since the housing is sealed and waterproof, additional measures protection is not required. The block is connected according to the standard scheme:

  • The red wire is connected to the “+”, black to the “-” of the battery.
  • The wire orange color should be connected to the dipped beam headlights or dimensions. The purpose of the orange wire is to turn off the DRL when the headlights are turned on. If you do not connect this wire, then the LEDs will shine too brightly and blind oncoming drivers.
  • When you turn off the head optics, the LEDs should glow brightly.
  • The lamps are connected to the block with the appropriate cable on a detachable connection.

Standard DRL connection to the battery terminals, which is the most reliable power supply option

After the work done, you need to check whether everything is done correctly. When the engine is started, the DRLs should light up, when the headlights are turned on, they should dim, and when the engine is turned off, they should go out completely. If the glow of the LEDs is observed for about 20 seconds after the engine is turned off, then this is considered normal. After you have checked and made sure that the system is working correctly, the central module is mounted and the LED blocks are fixed. To do this, they are inserted and snapped into the mounting bracket.

Next, the wiring is neatly laid under the hood and secured with plastic ties. Important: wires must not be attached to the fuel line, pressure hoses and radiator tube. Upon completion of all operations, the grate is installed in place. The variant with the control unit was considered above. If there is none, then you will need to install a relay for the dipped beam circuit in accordance with the diagrams above.

The DRL control unit is located near the battery, but away from the engine to avoid overheating.

DIY control unit

If you understand electrical engineering, then why not assemble a block for DRL yourself. The principle of operation of such a unit is that it receives voltage when the ignition is turned on, and it determines the operation of the engine by the frequency of pulses on the ignition coil. If the presence of pulses is more than 5 s, then the DRL automatically turns on. If there are no pulses within the specified time, then the lighting will not turn on. In addition, the unit turns off the LEDs when the head light is turned on.

Connect it as follows:

  • power is taken at any point where it is present when the ignition is turned on;
  • to count the pulses, the connection is made to the ignition coil;
  • the signal to turn on the main lighting is taken from the point at which 12 V appears when the head light is turned on;
  • at the output of the device, an automotive relay is used with a current consumption of not more than 200 mA at a voltage of 12 V, while the switching current should be 30–40 A;
  • connect the negative wire to ground.

With sufficient knowledge in the field of electronics, you can assemble a DRL control unit circuit with your own hands

Connecting DRL through a generator

Consider how you can power daytime running lights from a generator using a standard car relay (5 pins). The connection process is as follows:

  • The 30th contact of the relay is connected to the output D of the generator;
  • The 80th is connected to the "+" from the dimensions;
  • 87th - connected to the "+" LED blocks;
  • 86th - body weight.

In addition to the relay, the circuit assumes the use of a button, which must be connected in a circuit between the 30th contact of the relay and the generator. As a result, the device will work as follows:

  • When the engine is started, “+” goes from the generator through the button to the 30th relay contact. Further, the current flows to the "+" contacts of the daytime running lights, which leads to the LEDs lighting up.
  • When the side lights are turned on, voltage appears between the relay contacts (85 and 86), the coil is activated and the contacts (30 and 87) are closed. There is no voltage at the 87th output and the DRLs are turned off.

Installation and connection to standard headlights

Daytime running lights can be built into standard optics, for example, in PTF. To do this, you only need to redo the foglights so that they turn on properly, while they themselves fog lights will continue to work. To implement the plan, you will need two relays for 4 and 5 contacts. The connection is made as follows:

  • 85 contact of the first relay is connected to ground;
  • 86 contact goes to “+” clearance lamps or dipped beam;
  • 30 contact is connected to 87 of the second relay;
  • from pin 87 there is a connection to the “+” output of the headlights, while PTF connection remains untouched;
  • 86 contact of the second relay is connected to the “+” of the generator;
  • 30 contact of the second relay is connected with a wire to the “+” battery through a fuse;
  • 85 contact of the second relay is connected to ground.

It is worth noting that when connecting the 86th contact of the second relay to the generator, the DRL will work as soon as the engine starts. If the connection is made through the ignition switch, the LEDs will light up after the ignition is turned on. Both options are correct, and the choice is yours.

As you could understand, DRL connection is possible different ways. In this case, either a relay or a special lighting control unit can be used. Which option to give preference, everyone chooses independently. It was described above not only what daytime running lights are intended for, but also possible ways installations and wiring diagrams. As a result, equipping your car with such lighting will not be difficult.

The installation of daytime running lights on a vehicle is not complicated procedure and if necessary, anyone can do it. The main thing is to get familiar with possible schemes connections, installation sites and perform accurate installation, adhering to certain rules and recommendations.

(hereinafter referred to as DRL) gained their popularity after changes took place and in the last edition Russian traffic rules special amendments have been made. So, according to the new rules, any moving car or other vehicle (participant traffic) during daylight hours should have some light elements for their own designation. Previously, this was only in the form of recommendations, but almost 10 years ago it was introduced on a mandatory basis. You can use both conventional headlights (using a special matte mode) and additionally installed fog lights (PTF) or daytime running lights (DRL) to indicate a light signal.

When using headlights in low beam mode, many nuances pop up that make their operation not very comfortable. Fog lights are also not sinless and often raise questions.

Therefore, for such situations, many drivers prefer to buy special device- DHO. Navigation light modules are inexpensive to purchase and easy to install on a car. True, there are some nuances in their connection - if they are not taken into account, then the installed DRLs can turn out to be not only useless, but even dangerous and illegal. The DRL connection diagram is a rather delicate issue.

There are several schemes (at least seven) for connecting daytime running lights according to all standards. Each of these schemes can be implemented independently in a garage - it makes no sense to overpay and contact the service. Let's consider them.

Important nuances to know

As for any standard, all the parameters that must be observed when connecting daytime running lights can be found in GOST - in our particular case, we need GOST R 41.48-2004, specifically paragraph 6, subparagraph 19. From what you need to know and take into account : The electrical function circuit, which is necessary to control the voltage according to the position of the terminals, must be assembled in a special way. In the case of daytime running lights, the criterion correct installation is the fact that the lights should turn on automatically at . But at the same time, they should also automatically turn off if the driver manually turned on the main headlights.

You can also highlight paragraph 5, subparagraph 12, which says that the main headlights (the so-called headlights) themselves should only turn on after the side lights have been turned on. An exception can be considered those moments when the parking lights turn on for a short time as signals (flash).

Despite the fact that this does not seem particularly important at first glance, when connecting daytime running lights yourself, you will have to take into account all these nuances and delve into them.

Although it may seem that the "science" of properly connecting DRLs lies precisely in this balance between various beacons car, this is actually not the case. The wiring diagram for navigation lights should also take into account the fact that the stabilization unit for LED modules is very desirable when operating navigation lights. Without this block, the voltage will constantly jump inside the DRL. This voltage fluctuation leads to a rapid failure of the device and the need to replace it.

However, there are many motorists who claim that stabilization is completely optional and their DRLs work fine without it. They advocate that installing a stabilizer will be a waste of time and there is no difference between “empty” DRLs from DRLs with a stabilization unit. And, it seems like, connecting daytime running lights is just an additional expense.

In fact, this is absolutely not the case. It is enough to have at least a little understanding in electronics to know that each voltage jump generates an additional forward current that heats the crystals. In the case of LEDs, you can even operate with specific numbers: the magnitude of the voltage jump can reach up to 12V, because of this, the nominal value of the forward current increases and the emitter becomes very overheated.

As a result, you will get a reduced brightness of daytime running lights and their immediate task (what you installed them for) - warning drivers from the oncoming lane - will not be performed effectively enough.

Using LED daytime running lights without additional block stabilization, you will need to replace them almost annually, or even more often, while their direct function will be performed worse. Is it worth being lazy and saving a couple of hundred rubles because of this?

Connecting DRLs from a generator is the simplest available scheme. When it is implemented, DRLs are turned on at the moment (generator).

In order to connect the daytime running lights in this way, you need to take the positive wire and connect it to the positive terminal on the ignition switch. Negative wire you can mount on the case in any appropriate place.

Why is there something else besides such a simple scheme that even a child can implement? The thing is that the scheme, having a huge advantage in the form of simplicity, has significant disadvantage– The daytime running lights cannot be turned off when the engine is running. And the requirements of GOST for the coordination of all headlights and lights on the car are also not met. Therefore, other, more complex schemes to connect.

The next connection option is to use side lights and dipped beam headlights in the circuit, which themselves are tied into a power circuit.

To implement such a DRL scheme with your own hands, you need a wire with a plus sign, taking it from the running lights, connect it to the plus of the battery, and connect the minus (here carefully!) With the plus (!) Dimensions. Why is that? The fact is that when connecting the plus of the DRL to the battery, we make the plus of the battery neutral from the positive. Thus it turns out new chain battery-LEDs-dimensions-bulb-case. And the last link in such a chain will be the minus - the body.

The current consumption in such an implementation is very small (calculated in mA), so the LEDs emit light when the car is turned on, but the spiral from the running gear does not light up.

If the driver turns on the dimensions, then the voltage increases, the potential difference, on the contrary, decreases, the LEDs turn off, but the DRLs themselves turn on.

The scheme for connecting daytime running lights to the dimensions also has a number of disadvantages, and they can not always be neglected.

  1. The running gears do not depend on the engine and continue to work when the engine is turned off. This is contrary to GOST.
  2. This circuit does not work if your DRLs have their own LEDs.
  3. The circuit will not work correctly when using very powerful LEDs.
  4. In order for the scheme to work correctly and not happen short circuit you need to install an additional fuse on the circuit.

A number of shortcomings can be equalized using a few tricks. For example, if you take the positive wire that relates to the LED module, not directly with the battery plus, but through the ignition plus, then the first item will become invalid and the running gear will not work when the engine is turned off.

Another option, similar to connecting through side lights, is connecting to a circuit with a low beam lamp. It works like this: if the dipped beam lights up (the driver turns it on manually), then the DRLs go out at the same moment. The rest of the time they work.

Such a scheme is worse than connecting to a circuit with side lights, because in addition to the fact that it retains all the points of shortcomings from the list above, in addition, this is a direct violation of not only GOSTs, but also traffic rules.

According to the rules of the road, it is forbidden to use DRLs when parking, only side lights are used for this function.

Four-pin relay in the daytime running lights connection diagram

The next method we are considering is more advanced. When using it, you will get the running lights to turn off immediately after the engine is turned off, and they will turn on at the same time.

Despite the fact that such a scheme sounds difficult, anyone can figure it out if they wish. The circuit itself is based on using the switching of a four-pin relay and a reed switch. So, to use the DRL connection through a relay, you need:

  1. Plus LED DRL on pluses of both LED modules.
  2. Exit to the body to the pluses of dimensions.
  3. Second output to any reed switch output.
  4. The second output of the reed switch to the plus of the ignition.

After all the wires have been connected, you need to make a number of small adjustments. Be sure to do this with the car engine running. After the car is started, you need to move the reed switch next to the generator and determine its optimal position - such that it works on time, and the daytime running lights stably emit light. After the desired position has been found, you need to hang the reed switch in the thermotube, and fix the thermotube itself in the position found before.

What should happen when the engine is started? First, the generator should turn on, and after that the current will go through the connected terminals of the relay and the reed switch to the LEDs. The gauge lamps are off at this point because the supplied current is very low.

If there is no reed switch, there is still a way out. Use an oil sensor instead. Just use a pressure sensor and its terminals instead of a reed switch - nothing complicated.

So where's the catch and why isn't this a universal circuit? It's simple - in any implementation (with a reed switch or an oil pressure sensor) it does not implement the ability to connect LEDs to the DRLs themselves.

Use to connect a five-pin relay

So, it may seem to you that there is no universal solution and that any scheme has serious drawbacks. This is wrong. In fact, there are two whole schemes that take into account all the requirements and may well be used without violations. The first of these is the connection of daytime running lights using a relay with five contacts. It takes into account all the shortcomings of the previous methods and eliminates them. This diagram looks like this.

  1. The positive terminals of the LED DRL (two terminals of the LED modules) are connected through the first terminal to the plus of the ignition lock.
  2. The second terminal is connected to the positive terminal of the dimensions.
  3. The third terminal is attached to the body of your car.
  4. The fourth terminal is again brought to the plus.
  5. The fifth terminal must be isolated and not connected to anything.

With the help of such a scheme, you can correctly install your daytime running lights in accordance with all the requirements of GOST and SDA. The voltage after you start the engine is fed directly to the DRL at a rate of 12 volts. This way you turn on your running lights when you turn on the ignition. If any headlights are turned on - both the headlights of the main light and side lights, then the circuit will break and the voltage will stop being supplied to the DRL. Without current, they turn off.

The presence or absence of diodes cannot prevent this circuit from working.

All you need to connect your daytime running lights in accordance with all the rules with five terminals, all you need is a few connecting wires, terminals on which you will fix them, ties with which you will connect the terminals and wires, and a thermotube for insulation. After you make sure everything works as it should, carefully secure everything under the hood so as not to disturb the work already assembled circuit and in accordance with their sense of beauty.

This circuit allows the current to pass into the daytime running lights completely independently of other paths. Therefore, the work of dimensions and DRLs is not directly interconnected and it is possible to use any internal devices without taking into account their power and classification.

Using the daytime running light control unit in the wiring diagram

The latest version of the DRL installation also complies with all norms and requirements of the regulations.

This option is very simple and accessible to everyone. Moreover, it is very convenient to use. Relays are not used here - it is replaced by a small device called the daytime running light control unit.

This small device itself turns on the DRL after the driver, while the operation of the DRL is also independent (as in the previous scheme). Such a device guarantees correct work, so you don’t need to rack your brains on how to properly connect running lights to your car.

The control unit can be used with any type of lamp, you can install it on DRLs with their own LEDs. The unit has overload protection.

TO good blocks detailed documentation must be attached, which indicates the connection diagram (it is as simple as possible, you just need to correctly determine the plus and minus, which is not difficult at all), and the compliance with GOST must be indicated in the documentation (most factory models correspond, but it’s still worth checking). This means that such a controller does not affect the operation of other nodes and is completely independent.

In order not to get into trouble, be sure to pay attention to compliance with GOST. Sometimes manufacturers add other features in order to stand out in the same line, but they can violate the rules of operation. For example, they turn off DRLs at moments not foreseen by the standards, for example, when using the handbrake.

At such moments, it is very important to stop in time and choose what is simpler, but safer.
