Removing the Renault Scenic turbine 2. Renault turbine repair - advice from professionals

An extremely popular, proven and fairly reliable diesel engine from Renault with a factory index K9K. It has many modifications with different power ratings.

The main differences between different modifications (each has its own three-digit digital code, for example, 732 corresponds to a power of 106 hp):

  • different turbines.
  • Different design of the cylinder head (cylinder head).
  • Various engine management programs.

This engine was installed and installed on the following models:

Renault Megane 2, Renault Megan 3, Renault Scenic 2, Renault Scenic 3, Renault Grand Scenic 3, Renault Logan, Renault Duster (officially sold in Russia), Renault Kangoo, Renault Kangoo 2 (officially sold in Russia), Renault Clio 3, Renault Laguna 3.

European models of Nissan:

Nissan Juke, Nissan Micra, Nissan Qashqai, Nissan Note, Nissan Tiida.

What to look for during operation (possible problems with the K9K 1.5 DCi engine):

Worn liners / damaged connecting rods

Turbine failure. The process can be gradual. The main signs are that the engine starts to “eat” oil (oil accumulates in the intercooler radiator), engine thrust (acceleration) drops or disappears, extraneous metallic sounds from the turbine side, fresh oil smudges from the turbine side. Guaranteed solution - installation of a new, high-quality, non-original (German) turbine, budget solution - repair of the turbine in a specialized service (not everyone takes on these turbines), work time after repair - from 2 months to 2 years. When replacing the turbine, it is also necessary to change the gaskets, seals, engine oil and air filter!

Timing belt break. As a rule, due to natural wear and tear, if the timing belt is not changed in time, or if a foreign object gets in, it is usually a broken alternator belt. A broken timing belt with a high degree of probability leads to bending of the valves (all or several) and, as a result, a rather expensive engine repair (cylinder head removal, replacement and grinding of valves, valve adjustment - it is necessary to select and order “cups”).

Failure of glow plugs. There is no official regulation for replacing glow plugs on this engine - they change in case of failure. Signs - the car does not start well in cold weather, if all the candles are out of order - it does not start at all.

The list of mandatory routine (service) work:

  • Change engine oil and oil filter - once every 10,000 kilometers or once a year, whichever comes first.
  • Air filter replacement - every 10,000 km.
  • Replacing the timing belt and roller, replacing the drive belt - every 60,000 km or every 4 years.

Engine Specifications:

  • The working volume is 1461 cc (or colloquially 1.5 liters).
  • Type - 8 valves, 4 cylinders in line, single overhead camshaft.
  • Injection - direct with a common rail "common rail".
  • Power: 68 - 110 HP
  • Torque: 240 (at 2,000 rpm)
  • The compression ratio is 18.25:1.
  • Timing drive - timing belt with one roller. (Replacement 60,000 km or every 4 years, regulations for the Russian Federation).
  • The ignition order in cylinders 1-3-4-2 (cylinder No. 1 on the flywheel side)
  • The water pump and injection pump are driven by the timing belt.

Service and repair technical data for the Renault K9K engine.

Compression (engine warmed up to 80 degrees):

  • Minimum pressure - 20 bar
  • Permissible difference between cylinders - 4 bar.

* The measurement is carried out with a special diesel compression gauge.

Pressure in the lubrication system (engine warmed up to 80 degrees):

  • At idle - 1.2 bar (minimum).
  • At 3000 rpm - 3.5 bar (minimum).

The reason for the failure of the turbine of brand cars may be the wear of the working shaft of this device and the deformation of the compressor wheel, as well as damage to the central housing. In this case, an increased play of the central shaft can be clearly seen, in which its wheels knock on the inside of the housing. In this case, the device must be replaced or repaired.

The first signs of failure or incorrect operation of the turbine may be the formation of oil stains on the left side of the device.

This fact is a confirmation that, due to a complex of malfunctions, oil began to enter the intake manifold. The operation of the car in this case is highly discouraged, and the consequences require more extensive repairs.

The procedure for dismantling turbochargers

Before removing the turbocharger from the engine of a Renault Scenic 2 car for its replacement or repair, it is necessary to place the vehicle on a flat horizontal surface and fix the position with a parking brake and props for the rear wheels. Using a jack, raise the front wheels one by one and place supports to provide access to the bottom of the car. A height of 10-20 cm will be sufficient. The described procedure for raising the front of the car is relevant if it is not possible to use a flyover or viewing hole. On average, the total time to remove and install a new turbine can take from 4 to 6 hours.

Further, according to the standard procedure, it is necessary to dismantle the front bumper of the car, having previously disconnected all electrical terminals. The next step is to dismantle the intercooler. If possible and necessary in such a procedure, it is desirable to clean this part from dirt and scale, which will significantly increase the level of efficiency of its functioning. The oil from the intercooler must be drained into a separate container, and all hoses and pipes should be thoroughly washed with special products. It is also necessary to allow a certain amount of time for all cleaned parts to dry before reinstalling them. Usually, during the work with the turbine, the internal surfaces of the parts have time to dry and are ready for filling with working fluids.

The following activities are related to the dismantling of the engine protection and other parts that prevent access to the turbine housing or its removal. These include a decorative plastic shield under the windshield of the car, as well as wipers that need to be uninstalled. Then it is necessary to disconnect the fastening of the catalyst to the power unit of the Scenic 2 car. The number of these fasteners is 2, one of which is located on the left side of the car and access to it opens from its lower part, and the second is located on the right side, which can be reached in the engine compartment . To ensure the convenience of further work, the hook should be dismantled, which secures the plastic cover of the power unit. Key #8 is used for this operation.

The catalyst is unscrewed from the exhaust gas system by unscrewing the bolted connections using a #13 head and a ratchet. In this case, we are talking about removing 2 bolts in the lower part of the car, and four nuts through the engine compartment, for which the same wrench with a No. 13 head and an additional extension is used. As an additional accessory, which will greatly facilitate the described work, you can use a special portable mirror. Released from the wrench and bolt connections, the catalyst is removed from the seat through the bottom of the Renault Scenic 2 car. It should be noted that at this stage a certain amount of endurance and accuracy will be required, since the removal of the catalyst may seem difficult.

After the completed stages of work, access opens directly to the turbine of the car. First you need to unscrew the oil lines from the turbine housing using a TORX wrench. In this case, the direct oil line is disconnected through the engine compartment, and the return line from the bottom of the car. To do this, use the head number 10 and the ratchet. You also need to disconnect the vacuum hose.

At the next stage of work, using a ring wrench No. 13, it is necessary to unscrew the two nuts that hold the turbine itself directly. In this case, one of these nuts is unscrewed from the bottom of the car, and the second through the engine compartment using a special extension for the key. Next, you need to remove the turbocharger through the bottom of the car, scrolling it a little around its axis. Then you need to remove the direct oil line from the seat and flush it together with the return line. Also allow a little time for the cleaning liquid to evaporate.

Assembly must be carried out in the reverse order with the obligatory replacement of all gaskets and a visual check of the condition of the mating parts for possible repairs.

After assembly, special attention should be paid to pumping oil, for which it is necessary to deactivate the crankshaft sensor and turn the power unit several times with a starter.

Do not forget to reconnect the sensor, after which the car is ready for operation.

Turbocharger maintenance

Repair of the turbocharger is carried out after the complete dismantling of this device and provides for its complete disassembly. The body of the part is recommended to be cleaned with a sandblaster. Complete disassembly of the turbocharger involves unscrewing all bolted connections.

In most cases, the repair consists of installing a new turbocharger shaft, compressor wheels, a complete set of operating bushings and the central body of the device. The impellers of the wheels, which are fixed on the axle, in case of their deformation, are not subject to repair or restoration. Repair and installation of new components of the turbocharger can be carried out independently with minimal repair skills.

The need to remove the turbine from a diesel engine can arise in two cases. When cleaning this assembly, or to repair and replace it.

Turbine malfunctions

The need to dismantle and repair the unit may arise in several cases:

  1. During the operation of the power unit, third-party sounds appeared. It could be a whistle or a rattle.
  2. The amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe has increased. The color of the exhaust gases may change to white or blue.
  3. The power unit power has decreased. This is especially true when driving at high speeds.
  4. The consumption of motor fluid has increased significantly or the pressure of the lubricant has decreased.

The causes of the malfunction usually lie in the constituent elements of the turbocharger design.

The Diesel Agro channel spoke about turbine malfunctions.

What will be needed?

To remove the turbocharger from the engine with your own hands, you will need the following:

  • a set of ratchet sockets, in most cases, 1/2 and 1/4 tools are required to complete the task;
  • it is advisable to prepare various extension cords and cardans for dismantling;
  • a set of screwdrivers - with cross and flat tips;
  • WD-40 agent.

Turbine removal algorithm

If the machine is more than five years old, then a day before dismantling the unit, it is recommended to treat its nuts and fastening bolts with WD-40.

For the best effect, it is better to wrap all fasteners that fix the turbocharger to the manifold with a rag soaked in WD-40 liquid. In the absence of this tool, kerosene can be used. This step will allow you to quickly and conveniently dismantle the bolts with nuts.

The procedure for dismantling the turbocharger device is as follows:

  1. The on-board network in the car is turned off, all working electrical equipment and appliances are first turned off. To disconnect the power supply, open the hood of the car and disconnect the negative clamp from the battery.
  2. Get free access to the turbocharger unit. Often this node is located between two manifold nodes - outlet and inlet. You should look for a turbocharger on the right side of the power unit if the vehicle is rear-wheel drive. If we are talking about front-wheel drive, then the node is located on the left side of the engine.
  3. When dismantling the turbocharger device, one must be guided by the design features of the engine compartment. If the generator set interferes with the removal of the turbine, then it will have to be dismantled, after loosening and removing it. We recommend that you immediately assess the condition of the strap - if the product is worn out, it must be replaced. The battery and the liquid reservoir for the windshield and rear window washer system can interfere with the dismantling of the unit. These items are to be removed.
  4. Modern turbocharged units are equipped with controllers designed to ensure the correct operation of the nodes. We are talking about the health regulators of compressor devices, gas temperature sensors, pressure levels and others. Before dismantling the unit, these devices must be disconnected from the power supply of the machine by removing the connectors from them.
  5. All lines of the cooling system are turned off, as well as the lubrication system of the cartridge of the turbocharger unit. Disconnected pipes must be marked in advance. When disconnecting the drain pipe of the engine fluid from the cartridge into the crankcase of the power unit, a container must be placed under the line.
  6. The turbocharger is being dismantled. It is fixed on the downpipe and appipe, can be mounted on the engine block. The section of the line connected to the exhaust pipe is dismantled. When removing, save all sealing elements and nuts.
  7. The upper line is disconnected. Through this pipe, the air flow is supplied to the power unit. All bolts securing the pipe are unscrewed.
  8. If there is an attachment to the engine block, it is disconnected. The turbocharger unit is disconnected from the manifold assembly and removed.

The installation procedure is carried out in reverse order.

For Renault car owners, turbine repair can become a sudden nuisance if you do not follow the simple rules for operating cars with a turbo engine, which any Renault car dealership employee will tell you about. Yes, in fact, these rules apply to any brand of car, the models of which are equipped with a turbocharger.

Remember and always follow the points below, and then you may be able to postpone the repair of the Renault turbine to a later date:

  • a diesel engine requires warming up before loading, so it’s not worth it, as they say, “right off the bat”, especially in winter;
  • if the manufacturer's recommendations contain clear instructions on the brand of fuel (for gasoline engines) and oil, then it is better to listen and try to follow them;
  • No matter how costly the article on providing the car with oil may seem to you, do not try to delay the date of replacing fuel and lubricants, since any manufacturer calculates and tests a turbocharged engine and knows how long the oil will retain its performance. Since the turbine, unlike the atmospheric engine, works as a single unit with the engine, the same oil is used. Plus, the exhaust gas turbine is always in superheated mode, especially gasoline, so the impact of high temperatures is also available. It is better to change the oil a little earlier than the planned date, especially if the recommended mileage from the last oil change is already approaching the “red line”;
  • accustom yourself to perceive the machine as a full partner, having its own principles and mode of operation. Listen to the “talk” of the motor and immediately respond to all manifestations indicating deviations from normal operation;
  • at the slightest sign of a malfunction in the operation of the turbo engine, immediately go to a service center to diagnose and find out the causes of the breakdown. Do not rely on "maybe", since in this case you can only face the problem of having to replace the turbocharger after a while, and this is much more expensive than repairing a Renault turbine;
  • if you don’t understand anything about the functionality of a car, because you don’t have sufficient knowledge in this area, consult specialists in the same car service;
  • remember that the more intensively the increased power of the car is used, the more often you will have to visit the service to change the oil, as well as the oil and air filters;
  • do not try to make sterile cleanliness under the hood of Renault, using sealants to seal the points of connection of pipes and hoses. Manufacturers are strictly forbidden to use sealants in relation to a turbo engine!

Do not neglect the above recommendations. Not because someone decided to tell you what to do when operating Renault. By testing the engine on test benches and subjecting it to various loads, manufacturers try to find out the reasons for the decrease in the efficiency of the engine and look for ways to reduce the likelihood of problems. It is better to prevent the "disease" than to seek the possibility of its treatment later.

Do not rely on your own Renault turbine repair experience!

Suppose you have sufficient knowledge of the design and operation of a turbo engine. Even in this case, there is a possibility of an erroneous “diagnosis” when a breakdown occurs, because you may not notice some symptom. Another thing is if a software package is engaged in diagnostics - equipment, thanks to which it is determined how good this or that car system is.

There may be several reasons for the breakdown that has appeared, so it is better to examine all the systems of the machine on a test bench. Yes, and consulting with a professional, if, of course, you are an advanced motorist, does not hurt, because the effectiveness of a collegial decision is always higher. If you do not have competent knowledge in establishing the causes of breakdowns of turbo engines, do not know, as they say, “where the legs grow from” a problem with the color of exhaust gases or noise that has appeared, contact a car service.

In any case, the service will be responsible for the consequences of repairing the Renault turbine. This is due to the fact that for any service or repair work in the conditions of a service station that has received a certification permit for any type of work on Renault models, you are issued a guarantee for the operations performed and replaced parts.

Reasons why you can set a deviation from the normal operation of the Renault turbo engine:

  1. Exhaust is black, blue or gray in color at higher engine speeds. The reason may lie in the violation of the tightness of the oil or air inlet and outlet pipes, clogging of the oil line.
  2. The rattle and clang that appeared during the operation of the motor indicates several possible reasons:
  • the presence of a foreign body;
  • deformation of the housing or movable parts of the engine, in which there is friction on adjacent planes. This happens due to exposure to elevated temperatures or the ingress of a foreign body that led to a change in the configuration of the impellers, for example;
  • violation of the integrity of the housing, oil hoses or air pipes.
  1. Increased oil consumption. A possible reason lies in the clogging of the oil line or the violation of the integrity of the oil hoses, which will also be indicated by visual signs of a leak - oil stains can be found in the parking lot of the car.
  2. Increased fuel consumption. Most likely, the problem is with the flow of a sufficient amount of air into the cylinders, which is necessary to enrich the fuel mixture for an efficient combustion process. This may be due to depressurization of the air pipes, as well as the presence of other reasons in the form of improper control of the variator, for example.
  3. The car accelerates for a long time, that is, it loses the qualities that a turbo engine gives the car, the dynamics of the car’s movement indicates a lack of traction.

Responding to a malfunction in time means preventing the need to replace the Renault turbine.

Renault turbine repair sequence

In any service, they know that the main reason for the appearance of deviations in the operation of a turbo engine is a decrease or increase in oil pressure, as well as the degree of clogging. If the reason is in the oil and the owner immediately turned to the service, the repair will cost only by replacing the filter, flushing the oil line and changing the oil.

In other cases (in case of deformation of the rotor and compressor wheels, the appearance of a large backlash on the shaft axis, etc.), it is necessary to repair the Renault turbine, and in case of violation of the integrity of the blower housing, its complete replacement.

Repair is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Inspection of the turbo engine to identify visible deformations and violations of the integrity of the body.
  2. Dismantling the unit for the purpose of disassembling into components.
  3. Disassembly of the turbocharger into its component parts and troubleshooting.
  4. Cleaning in a sandblasting chamber of a hot snail, body, and other external parts.
  5. Washing of cold parts in an ultrasonic alkaline chamber with a certain mode of operation.
  6. Replacement of damaged or worn parts (rotor wheel, shaft and other parts).
  7. On the balancing apparatus, parts of the rotor are debugged separately and the shaft is assembled.
  8. The cartridge assembly is balanced, that is, the rotor with the bearing housing.
  9. The unit is assembled in the original functional design.
  10. The turbocharger is being debugged on test benches with the creation of conditions for maximum loads.
  11. The overhauled turbo engine is installed on the machine.
  12. A conclusion is issued on the repair performed and replaced parts, as well as a guarantee.

The same sequence will be for self-repair of the turbine. There will be no guarantee for the work performed, since in this case you yourself are responsible for the actions performed. It is also worth considering that for a complete repair of a Renault turbine, specific equipment will be required that will allow it to be installed on a turbo engine with fully restored functionality after repair.

Debugging, balancing and testing the turbine after repair will require professional equipment, skills and knowledge in the field of the device, the principle of operation and repair of the turbocharger. The best way out in the event of a malfunction in the operation of a turbocharged engine is a visit to a service center.
