Fog lamp relay. Connecting foglights

Fog lamp relay. Connecting foglights

17.10.2019

During bad weather, the efficiency of the headlights is noticeably reduced, which not only makes driving less comfortable, but also affects the safety of the trip.

The light beam of the dipped and main beam headlights is reflected from raindrops and particles of water vapor during fog, forming a dense white veil.

A real salvation for the driver in such weather conditions will be fog lights (PTF), which give a flat and wide horizontal beam of light.

It spreads over the road, well illuminating the roadside, improving the visibility of the car itself for drivers of oncoming cars.

Regular PTFs are rarely found in basic car configurations, however, if desired, fog lights can always be purchased separately and installed independently. To do this, it is enough to have basic knowledge in the field of electrical engineering and electronics.

This is how the connection diagram of the PTF button through the relay looks like:

Everything on it is extremely simple and clear.

  1. From the battery, plus through the fuse goes to the relay contact (30) and then from contact (85) goes to one contact of the PTF on / off button.
  2. A minus is applied to the second contact of the button.
  3. Further from the relay contact (87), the plus goes to the fog lamps.
  4. A minus is connected to the contact (86).

Please note that each car model has its own characteristics, so the scheme may be adjusted.

Instructions - how to connect foglights through a relay and a button on the example of a Chevrolet Niva

As can be seen from the diagram above, to connect foglights you will need:

  • the PTFs themselves;
  • fog lamp relay;
  • headlight on/off button;
  • fuse 10 A;
  • wires and connecting terminals.

For work, you will also need some tools: screwdrivers, a sharp knife for stripping wires and electrical tape.

We perform the work on installing and connecting foglights through a relay and a button in the following sequence (we will consider the Chevrolet Niva as an example):

  1. Determine the location of the relay. Since this component is small, it can be easily hidden behind the dashboard.
  2. We determine the place location of the PTF on / off button;
  3. We measure the length of wires required for connection;
  4. Next, we stretch the copper wire from terminal 30 to the battery (+), having previously installed a 10 Amp fuse in a convenient place;
  5. We connect the fog lamp button to terminal 85 and install it in the selected location. As a rule, the front PTF button is installed in place of the standard buttons, where there is a plug;
  6. Relay contact 86 is connected to ground in any convenient place;
  7. Install fog lights. Manufacturers have made sure that those owners who wish to install fog lights do not invent a "bike". In the front bumpers of the Chevrolet Niva, special niches are provided for this, which are closed with plugs. In order to remove them, you need to unscrew the screws from the inside of the bumper. We insert the headlights and look at the designations of the wires.
  8. We feed the positive wire to them from contact 87, minus - from the car body;
  9. We are testing.

Useful rules - you need to know

When choosing the foglights themselves and the place for their location, you should carefully read the accepted standards, which are strictly prescribed in the traffic rules.

So, on the territory of Russia, it is allowed to install only factory PTFs that have passed certification. This is confirmed by the E22 sign in a circle, which is applied to the PTF body.

  1. There should be two foglights themselves - no more and no less.
  2. They should be installed at a distance of no more than 40 cm from the edge of the side marker diffuser and not less than 25 cm from the level of the road surface. Most modern cars have regular places for installing PTF on the bumper.
  3. If foglights are not provided for by this configuration, plugs are put in their place, which are easily removed and PTFs are mounted in their place.

Most fog lamps on the market use a standard H1 category single filament bulb. PTF should be switched on only together with side lights.

Improper installation of fog lamps can cause an accident or cause discomfort to drivers of oncoming vehicles. Follow all the rules and you will never get into an unpleasant situation.

The car "Lada Granta" from the factory comes in three trim levels: "Lux", "Norma", "Standard". In this case, only the first of them receives fog lights. The second and third places for the installation of "foglights" have, there is a corresponding button on the panel, but there are no headlights themselves. PTF connection can be entrusted to service station specialists, but installing them yourself according to a ready-made scheme is both cheaper and more pleasant.

Rules for installing "foglights" on Lada

Properly installed PTFs help the driver drive the car in difficult road conditions. The rules of the road strictly regulate the height of the headlights, their color, as well as the position of light spots on the road.

Where can I install PTF

In the design of the modern "Grants", the installation sites are precisely worked out: under the license plate, on the sides. In some bumpers, there are even recesses left there. . In any case, for proper installation, the front bumper of the car will have to be removed.

But before that, you should go shopping and find the necessary details. Today's market offers both recessed bumpers and bumpers with headlights already installed. The choice, as always, remains with the owner.

Instructions for installing headlights for "dummies"

The whole process of equipping a car with “foglights” can be divided into several stages:

  1. Removing the bumper.
  2. Headlight installation.
  3. Wiring.
  4. Headlight connection.
  5. Assemble parts in reverse order.

Removing the front bumper

The bumper of the "Grants" is integral with the grille, therefore, in order not to warp the latches under the wings, it is advisable to remove it together with a partner.

Do-it-yourself headlight installation

For Lada Grants, two types of headlights are offered today:

  • Bosch - with flat glass;
  • Kirzhach - convex glass.

Both those and other headlights are standard, so their choice is up to the consumer.

What tool do you need

In addition to headlights, for PTF car equipment, you must have available:

  • self-tapping screws (6 pieces for mounting headlights);
  • drill;
  • set of drills;
  • countersink or skin;
  • stationery knife;
  • sealant.
  1. In the center of the oval, a hole with a diameter of up to 10 mm is drilled under the headlight.
  2. Starting from this hole, cut out a circle along the inner diameter with a clerical knife.

    It is better to cut the hole in several steps so that the hand does not slip off and ruin the bumper.

  3. A hole is processed with a sandpaper or countersink, the contour of which should be equal to the outer diameter of the headlight.
  4. Using self-tapping screws, install the headlight in the bumper.
  5. The gaps remaining after work are filled with sealant.

The last paragraph of the instruction is optional. However, experts recommend not to neglect it, otherwise dirt, snow or water may get into the cracks.

The steps described above are repeated in the same sequence to install the second headlight.

How to make wiring and connect a headlight

To connect the PTF, you will need various tools:

  • mounting kit for connecting fog lights on the "Grant". It includes a button, relay, wiring in the cabin, wiring under the hood;
  • corrugation (for example, 9 mm for the interior and 16 mm for the hood);
  • insulating tape;
  • drill;
  • set of drills;
  • head 10 mm;
  • wrench 13 mm.

The plan for connecting "foglights" looks like this:

  1. Take out the battery.
  2. Unscrew the screws securing the platform under it.
  3. Having shifted the panel to the side, loosen the bracket nut, removing the fuel pipes.
  4. The wire begins to be laid from the right headlight through the mudguard, then under the compressor, generator and cooling fan.
  5. The wire from the second headlight is passed through the left mudguard.
  6. Both wires are connected in the engine compartment. Then they are placed in a corrugation.
  7. The corrugation is passed under the ABS block next to the tubes of the headlight hydraulic correctors, entering the cabin through the rubber bands of these tubes.

Finished with wiring under the hood.

Now you can install the battery in its original place and attach the bumper. The diagrams below show where the ground terminals can be fixed on the right side.

The terminals are attached in the same way on the left side.

PTF connection in the cabin

The power button can be done in two ways:

  • using the button included in the mounting kit;
  • through the standard system of the light control module (MCS).

How to put a button

The first method is described in detail in the instructions for the set. This is how the installation diagram will look like using the button from the installation kit.

Here it is worth mentioning the connection rules. The blue wire is connected to the "plus" of the ignition, the white - to the "plus" from the marker lights, the black - to the "minus". Relay in the system must be mandatory. The current strength with the headlights on reaches 35 A, so the button will not last long without it. Power is supplied to the relay from the fuse box or directly from the battery, as shown in the diagram.

Scheme using ICC

This option is more complicated, but it allows you to display the indication of the operation of the "foglights" on the dashboard. In addition to the mounting kit, you will need to purchase Lira-type terminals (large and small).

In addition, you will need the ICC block from the Lux Grants. There are two types of this module on sale, the differences between which are the presence of another switch position and additional contacts. The price of ICCs also differs by almost a third.

Required tool:

  • soldering iron;
  • insulating tape;
  • flat screwdriver;
  • Phillips screwdriver;
  • 22 mm wrench with long handle.

The installation order looks like this:

  1. The fuse box cover is attached with clips, so to remove it, just pull it towards you.
  2. Unscrew the three screws holding the instrument cluster panel: a pair at the top, one under the fuse panel.
  3. The combination itself is held on by four screws. Unscrew them, then, sliding it to the side, remove the connection connector. It is held by a special switch, which is turned to the side.
  4. Then remove the steering column trim.
  5. We got to the ICC. Unscrew one screw above it, remove it from the block. On the sides there will be two latches that are wrung out with a screwdriver.
  6. Remove the handle from the headlight hydrocorrector by pulling it towards you, then release the nut holding it on the panel, sink it inward, slightly shift it down.
  7. Now unscrew the screw securing the fuse box.

    For convenience, move the steering column up to the stop.

  8. After removing the screw and shifting the block to the left, they release it from the mounts. Then it must be turned over, after removing several relays on the left side.
  9. Connect the pink wire from the ignition and the blue wire from the mounting block, so a “plus” will be applied to the circuit. Solder the junction, then isolate it.
  10. Next, look for empty spaces on the fuse box under the sockets F16, F17 indicated in the diagram below.

    The fuse F18 is indicated next to it. You can install it in advance if you plan to make seat heating in the future.

  11. Now, large “Lyres” are put on the ends of the wires coming from the “foglights”, inserted into the fuse box. The left headlight is turned on to fuse 17, the right headlight to fuse 16. The two remaining fuses must be connected to the power relay, as indicated in the diagram.

    You can do without a relay, because the ICC from "Lux" has its own. But it is more reliable to use an external relay and a thick power wire.

    Then an additional wire is brought to the instrument cluster to indicate the headlights are on, connecting to pin 15.

  12. The whole structure is assembled in the reverse order. Henceforth, the inclusion of fog lights will be provided through the ICC, like the rest of the headlights.

Video: installing fog lights and repairing head optics on the Lada Grant

"Lada Granta" in the configuration "Lux" already has fog lights. But, having bought the necessary parts, you can also equip other configuration models with additional headlights - “Standard” or “Norma”. This work is painstaking, but if you carefully do it, then it will not be much work. Every driver knows that the price of work at a service station is directly proportional not to the cost of parts, but to the duration of the work.

Proper vehicle equipment is a guarantee of safety for both the driver and passengers. Frequent trips and travel by car are direct evidence of how difficult it is for a car owner to do without fog lights. Even small changes in the weather can disrupt the usual movement if the car is operated without fog lights.

To install them, you don’t need so much: fog lights, the necessary tools and a fog light connection diagram, which is actually quite simple. It is better to buy high-quality fog lights at the car market, since it is there that experts will advise not only the right model, but also tell you how to connect it.

The main task of fog lamps is a clear supply of light. Precise adjustment of the headlights makes it possible to illuminate the path at a distance of ten meters. And this is quite enough when driving at low speeds, even in very inclement weather. Foglights are adjusted directly during installation. Correct adjustment of the angle of incidence of light is the key to high-quality road lighting.

Connecting fog lights is not difficult, the main thing is to have at least basic skills in working with automotive tools and know where and what is located.

Connection instructions

To complete the task you need:

  • fog lights,
  • relay and fog lamp block,
  • power button,
  • 15 amp fuse
  • wires, tape.

If you have experience connecting a car radio, it will be even easier, despite some differences.

First you need to remove the terminals from the battery and remove the main panel, under which there is a pair of bulbs from the backlight of the furnace regulator. The bulbs themselves will not be needed, but the wires are just the opposite. By swiping to the very end along the wire, you can find a two-pin connector. It is to him that you need to attach the first contact of the relay. So, the first wire must be connected to the oven lighting connector, the other to the button.

Then the wire must be connected to the relay, in order to thus obtain a 12-volt circuit from the auto dimensions and relay contact 85. The connection process cannot be called overly intricate, so even beginners can do it. By the way, the relay can be hidden anywhere, as convenient for the driver, for example, behind the dashboard.

And in conclusion, the most important thing is the fog lights. Each of them has two wires: for plus and minus. The pluses from one and the other headlights need to be connected to each other and sent to the battery. After that, lift them onto the relay so that the wires are invisible, and then connect them to the connector at the 30th number. Minus goes to the body. And now you can make sure that the foglights are working. You should not immediately assemble the structure, it is important to make sure that everything works and is connected securely enough, it does not shorten anywhere. Secure exposed wires with electrical tape. And it's all!

If the fog lights do not work, the relay connectors may be incorrectly connected, which, when installed correctly, should make clicks. Troubleshooting in this case will save the situation.

To date, there are some rules related to how to install fog lights. They are spelled out in the code of the Rules of the Road. Here is the headlight data connection diagram itself, designed to help an inexperienced driver.

Installation and requirements for it

The clarity of the light beam at the top guarantees excellent illumination of the path, in other words, the light propagation must be above the horizontal plane. The installation of headlights should be carried out directly at the bottom of the car, because due to this, a certain layer is obtained between fog and light, providing good lighting.

If the connection diagram involves equipping the headlights of the lower part of the car, plugs will be required. They are protective grilles that protect the headlights from hitting stones, sticks and other troubles that threaten the safety of the headlights while driving. The plug will protect the details under any circumstances.

It is important to constantly monitor the cleanliness of the installed headlights with the help of polishing. This increases the service life of the equipment and makes the light dispersion clearer.

Thus, the correct adherence to the described rules will allow you to install foglights on your own, without spending money and waiting in lines at the service station.

Video

How to install PTF on a VAZ 2109 can be seen in the following video:

The installation of fog lights is not a mandatory requirement of the SDA, and its necessity for many motorists remains a controversial issue. But in the case of this event, certain rules should be followed.

Requirements for installing fog lights

Like many automotive equipment, fog lights must be installed and placed correctly, in accordance with the requirements. According to the SDA (rules of the road), on the basis of GOST 8769-75, it is allowed to install fog lighting devices only in the amount of 2 pieces. They should be located:

  • no further than 40 cm from the side plane of the car (along the outer edge of the headlight);
  • not lower than 25 cm from the surface of the roadway (along the lower edge of the headlight);
  • the light openings of the fog lamps must be below the top of the light-transmitting opening of the dipped-beam headlights.
  • the visibility angles of fog lights, within which they are not obstructed by any elements of the car, should be: vertically + 15–10 °, horizontally + 45–10 °.

Fog lights should only be switched on in conjunction with the position light.

On modern cars, as a rule, the vehicle manufacturers have already taken care of the installation site. Most cars have special places on the bumper for PTF, and even if the device itself is missing, there are plugs where it should be. They must be removed and PTF installed instead.

If the car does not provide a place for PTF, then it will have to be selected. In this case, the installation of fog lights must be carried out in strict accordance with the requirements for their placement on the car and connection. Correct installation and adjustment of these devices will ensure maximum efficiency of their work. The headlights are adjusted after their installation with the fixing of the provided fasteners. At the same time, they achieve the correct angle of incidence of the luminous flux onto the road.

Ways to connect fog lights

Connecting fog lights can be done in several ways. The simplest and most reliable is to connect to an existing car wiring designed to power the PTF. In this case, the factory electrical circuit already contains all the necessary elements (leading wires, connectors, relay, fuse, switch) - all that remains is to install the headlights and connect them to the existing connectors. This method is implemented only on fully equipped cars, when new PTFs are bought to replace installed ones or to complete the vehicle. When purchasing headlights, you should make sure that they fit the car model, both in terms of plug connection and installation parameters.

If the car does not have an electrical circuit for connecting the PTF, then it will have to be laid independently. This will require insulated copper wires, a switch, a relay, a fuse and the headlights themselves.

A common mistake is to connect the PTF to the parking lights. The wires and switch of these devices are not designed for the current consumed by the headlights!

A fuse in the PTF power circuit is not a luxury. This device will save you from a possible fire in the event of a short circuit in the wiring. Its value is calculated based on the power of the headlights. If the lamps in them, for example, are 60 W, then the calculation of the current in the supply circuit for two PTFs is as follows.

60W * 2 / 12V = 10A.

The fuse is always chosen with a small margin - in this case, 15 A is required.

Fog lamp connection diagrams

The simplest way to connect fog lights is directly from the battery, through a switch. Each PTF has two contacts for the electrical power of the lamps. One of them on both headlights is connected with a wire into one circuit and attached to the mass (metal part of the body) of the car with a rigid bolt fastening. The vehicle body is connected to the negative terminal of the battery. In fact, it’s better to run the wire to the battery itself and connect directly to its terminal with the “–” sign - it’s more reliable, there is no risk of power loss due to corrosion of the body and bolt.

The second contacts of the headlights are used to connect to the "+" of the battery. They are also connected together, and the wire is brought to the relay contact with the inscription 87. Next, the relay contacts are connected with wires to:

  • 30th - connected through a fuse to the plus of the battery;
  • 86th - to the minus of the battery or a rigid bolted connection to the mass of the car;
  • 85th - to the “+” of the battery through the switch and fuse used in the circuit of the 30th contact.

The PTF power button is mounted on the car interior panel in a convenient place. The relay is located on the circuit board. In the fuse box, as a rule, there is a free slot for installing an additional one used in the PTF circuit. You can also use one of those installed in the block.

A more complex circuit based on the previous one is connecting to the battery plus through. That is, from the PTF power button, the electrical circuit is not laid to the fuse and then to the battery, but to any wire in which voltage appears when the ignition is turned on. Since it is possible to connect the fog lights according to this scheme to the power only when the ignition is on, this will avoid the situation when the PTF is accidentally forgotten to be burning when the engine is not running.

The previous schemes will make it possible to fulfill the requirement of the SDA that the parking lights must be lit before turning on the PTF. In order for the headlight connection to comply with current legislation, the PTF button is connected to the vehicle's exterior lighting switch.

If your profession is associated with frequent car trips, or you just love to travel, then you probably know that without good optics it is quite difficult to guarantee driving safety. At the moment, even the shortest trip should not be made without good fog equipment. Such optics are now installed on almost every car in the basic configuration.

However, there are cars in which you have to independently connect foglights through a relay. The scheme and installation steps for this optics are further in our article.

What are foglights for?

Before telling you about the features of mounting these elements, a few words about how important they are for a car. The main function is to supply light. The quality and range of illumination of the roadway depend on this characteristic. If the fog lights are well tuned, they are able to illuminate up to 10 meters of asphalt in front of them, which is quite enough for safe movement at a speed of 50-60 kilometers per hour. And it does not matter what weather you are driving in - with a cloudless sky or with thick fog - this optics always copes with its function. So how do you install it in a car?

Connecting foglights through a relay: diagram and instructions

First, prepare the necessary tools and materials. In the course of work, we will need a 15 amp fuse, several meters of wires, insulating tape, a power button, a block and a PTF relay. The wiring diagram for fog lights through a relay is shown in the photo below. We will be guided by it.

This is the same wiring diagram for the fog lamp relay. In principle, it does not present any difficulty, and it is very easy to deal with it.

Where to start installation?

First of all, you need to remove the central panel - 2 backlight lamps for the furnace regulator will be located here. They do not affect the operation of the PTF in any way, but we will need their wires. To feel for the two-pin connector, you should run your hand along the wire to the very end. It is especially important, since this is where the first contact on the relay will be established. Next, the wire is connected to the location of the oven backlight connector, and its second part goes to a separate PTF power button.

We connect contacts

How to connect fog lights through a relay next? In order for the system to have a twelve-volt network of dimensions and 85 contacts, it is necessary to run a wire to the relay. Next, we stretch the 87th contact under the pedals to the battery.

How to make the correct connection of foglights through includes 30, 85, 86 and 87 pins. We connect them, according to the figure. We also install a 15-amp fuse here. And the closer it is to the battery, the better. Next is the 86th contact. Everything is simple here - we connect it to the body.

About wires

Now you need to deal with the foglights themselves. As we know, there are only two wires coming from each headlight (“plus” and “minus”, respectively). We connect the latter with the body, that is, it will be our mass. Next, we raise it to the relay so that the wires are not visible, and connect it to the battery.

This completes the connection of the fog lights through the relay. The connection diagram, as we can see, is very simple, so even a novice motorist can handle this task.

Second installation option

It will be much easier for car owners who already have a place in the bumper for mounting fog lights. Then you don't need to buy fuses. All that is required is a pair of new foglights and up to 100 centimeters of wire (in reserve).

PTFs for foreign cars most often have two wires painted black and red. The latter is connected to the "plus", and the first - to the "minus". Although on some instances (as, for example, on foglights for the Asian-made Daewoo Nexia), it is unimportant which color to connect to. Red may well perform the function of "plus" and "minus". By the way, if you didn’t find wires for connecting optics in the bumper, it doesn’t matter - you can try connecting them directly to the battery. Moreover, it is not necessary to pull the "plus" and "minus" from each lamp separately. The installation order can be as follows - two wires (as we have already said, black and red) are installed to the battery terminals (more precisely, under them), which go first to the left headlight on the driver's side, and then to the right one. If the wires are short, we take longer ones, we clean their contacts at the ends and connect them. You will have to stock up on electrical tape for this. The color of the long wire that will be connected to the PTF and the battery is not critical. The main thing is that you do not get confused in polarity. You should also be vigilant and disconnect the battery before installation. Otherwise, the slightest contact of the wire with the body may cause a short circuit.

Such a PTF installation algorithm is suitable not only for foreign cars, but also for all domestic cars on which the manufacturer provides a place for attaching optics. For example, on VAZ 2110 and 2114 cars, connecting foglights in this way takes no more than 20-40 minutes of time (and this despite the fact that the motorist has no experience in installing such equipment on a vehicle).

What requirements must the PTF meet?

Finally, we note what rules modern fog lights should meet:

Conclusion

As you can see, connecting foglights to the VAZ 2110 and many other domestic cars is a fairly easy task that every motorist can handle. The fog lamp is your reliable assistant, which allows you to distinguish objects on the roadway in time and react to the traffic situation with a large margin of time.
