The era of DAF Turbo Twin rally racing twin-engined trucks turned out to be bright but short: it all started in 1984 and ended in 1988. And in 1998 Russian team KamAZ-Master exhibited a racing KamAZ-49255 with a 12-cylinder diesel engine with a capacity of 1050 hp at the Dakar. But the heavy-duty motor simply “broke” the transmission, the car retired from the race, and the team for a long time stopped experimenting with super-powerful engines.

The first Dakar triumph came only in 1987, when Jan de Rooy won the Dakar truck classification in a lightweight Turbo Twin II. Moreover, de Rooy "tumbled" along the track in such a way that he took 11th place in the overall standings of the marathon, and Karel Loprais, who finished second on Tatra, lost to Jan for more than 14 hours!

The apotheosis of the development of twin-engine DAF was the new Turbo Twin X1 with six turbines, the total output of two 11.6-liter engines of 1200 hp. (4700 Nm) and a top speed of 240 km/h! When in 1988 this monster went to the start of the African marathon, no one at first even doubted that the Dutch would win the race dry. Motorsport connoisseurs still remember the footage of how the Turbo Twin X1 weighing 11 tons at a speed of 200 easily bypasses the prototype Peugeot 405 Turbo of the leader of the passenger classification Ari Vatanen in the desert ...

However, "Dakar-88" ended tragically for the DAF team. This result was included in the books of records of the CIS and Europe, and will also qualify for inclusion in the Guinness Book of Records.

To increase the carrying capacity, dual tires are on the all-wheel drive BelAZ-75710 (right) not only at the rear, but also at the front. Each gigantic tire, weighing 5 tons, can withstand a load of at least 100 tons. And to increase maneuverability, both bridges are made swivel.

To move such colossal masses, one engine is not enough. Therefore, the record dump truck has six of them at once!
