Volvo FE trucks in the company's model range play the role of the older brother of the FL family vehicles, the gross weight of which, depending on the modification, ranges from 12.5 to 18 tons. The main specialization of both is practically the same: intracity and regional transportation over short and medium distances. These cars are unified in cabs and power range. And in terms of maximum gross weight, the most load-bearing versions of the Volvo FL are not inferior to the two-axle modifications of the FE family. So what is the difference between them?

Chassis difference. The fact is that Volvo FE received a completely different, more durable undercarriage, comparable in strength and load characteristics to the undercarriage of heavy Volvo FM. In addition, they are almost equal to the latest in terms of wheel size and ground clearance, which led to a significant increase in cross-country ability. All of the above made it possible to expand the range of superstructures installed on the Volvo FE: tanks, concrete mixers, tipper and garbage bodies were added to the vans and flatbeds that dominate the equipment of the Volvo FL.

In addition, a chassis with an increased margin of safety made it possible to develop a three-axle model based on a two-axle version with a drive to one or two rear axles. The total mass of vehicles with 6x2 and 6x4 wheel arrangement is already 26 tons, and the increased length of the frame has a positive effect on the load capacity. Moreover, both two-axle and three-axle vehicles bearing the FE designation are able to work as part of a road train, the total mass of which, depending on the capabilities of a particular tractor, ranges from 26-44 tons. And what is most unexpected: a two-axle truck tractor appeared in the Volvo FE model range. That is, this family not only expanded the capabilities of the FL delivery trucks, but also unceremoniously invaded the diocese of the classic FM series heavy trucks.

The cabs that are equipped with Volvo FE trucks, both externally and in design, are almost no different from Volvo FL cabs. Unless their landing on the chassis is somewhat higher. The interior is also without significant differences. First of all, the central part of the dashboard turned towards the driver attracts attention. It not only looks very stylish, but also significantly improves ergonomics. The steering wheel is made safety, interior trim is made of energy-absorbing materials. The cabins used for cars of the family (of course, cabover layout) can be short “day”, “one and a half” or elongated with a full-fledged sleeping compartment. But they are all the same height.

The Volvo FE engine compartment located under the cab floor houses a very modern, fairly economical and environmentally friendly six-cylinder in-line diesel engine D7E with a working volume of 7.2 liters. It is equipped with a “common rail” direct fuel injection system and can comply with both Euro-3 environmental standards (in versions with a capacity of 240, 280 and 320 horsepower), and Euro-4, Euro-5 (in versions with a capacity of 240, 260, 300 or 340 horses). True, to achieve Euro-4 and higher parameters, the designers used an AdBlue solution (colloquially urea) injected into the exhaust system, which has a tendency to freeze in the cold.

This factor, given the operating conditions in the vastness of our country, unfortunately, will not please many Russian carriers. But all customers will certainly appreciate the fact that the Volvo FE power unit is equipped with an engine brake, and on machines with an automatic transmission also with a “retarder” (transmission brake). By the way, about the transmission. With any of the options for the Volvo FE engine, a six or nine-speed manual with overdrive and a shift servo is aggregated. As already mentioned, it is also possible to install a six-band “automatic”. At the request of the customer, a power take-off is built into the transmission.

The drive axles of FE trucks can be single stage (these are mainly used on road versions), or two stage, equipped with wheel reduction gears, they are most suitable for vehicles working on a construction site. In addition, models with a 6x2 wheel formula are equipped with a rolling fixed or steered axle. The mounting length of the frame for two-axle models is from 4.8 to 9.8 meters, and for three-axle models from 5.75 to 9.15 meters. The suspension in the basic version is spring, but on request it is possible to install air suspension (rear or on all axles). The brake mechanisms are disc, supplemented by a system of directional stability, as well as an anti-skating system that helps to get under way uphill.

Volvo is one of the world's leading manufacturers of commercial vehicles, trucks, buses, engines and various equipment. Previously, the concern also produced passenger cars, but in 1999 it sold this division to Ford, which then resold it to the Chinese concern Geely.

The largest concern with almost a century of history is considered one of the flagships of the global automotive industry. From the very beginning of its activity, the company paid great attention to the quality of the cars produced, which favorably distinguished its many competitors.

Today, the Volvo concern owns several well-known brands, including Renault Trucks, Mack, Nissan Diesel, etc. The automaker includes 9 companies, including the largest division of Volvo Trucks, which manufactures trucks under the Volvo brand. Powerful 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines (displacement 12.8 liters), a high level of comfort and safety, and economical operation have made Volvo trucks the best solution for long-haul transportation and construction work.

Since 1993, Volvo FH trucks have won the Truck of the Year award twice. Throughout its existence, this series has been subjected to technical improvements more than once: equipping the brake system with electronic control, updating the cab, and increasing the engine size.

Today, under the Volvo FH12 brand, trucks of modern design with an upgraded engine, 12-speed I-Shift manual transmission with electronic control and a joystick are produced. The design of the Volvo FH12 engines uses new unit injectors and a modified piston group, due to which the oil change interval has been increased from 60 to 90 thousand km.

Naturally, modern trucks, equipped with powerful engines and electronics, need high-quality maintenance. One of the conditions for the trouble-free operation of Volvo FH12 cars is the use of high-quality engine oils.

The list of recommended lubricants for trucks under warranty service is indicated in the instruction manual. During further operation, lubricants approved by Volvo must be used.

Synthetic engine oil is ideal for filling Volvo FH12 trucks. This product is part of the G-Family family and compares favorably with expensive Western brands in terms of price / quality ratio. G-Profi and G-Energy oils are produced by Gazpromneft-Lubricants in Italy (Bari) using modern technologies, taking into account the requirements of car manufacturers and international quality standards.

G-Profi GT 10W-40 engine oil has been technically tested on Volvo D12 engines and approved to the Volvo VDS-3 specification. The use of G-Profi engine oils for pouring into Euro-3 diesel engines has been officially confirmed, incl. turbocharged, which are equipped with tractors, buses and special equipment.

G-Profi GT10W-40 engine oil has the following benefits:

  • thermal stability due to good detergent properties (engine cleanliness is the key to effective heat removal);
  • good neutralizing functions even with a high percentage of sulfur in the fuel due to the high base number;
  • extended service life (belongs to the “LongLife” service product category);
  • excellent dispersing properties;
  • the content of high-quality anti-wear additives.

The use of G-Profi GT 10W-40 oil with high lubricity and extended drain interval helps to reduce the cost of servicing Volvo trucks.

The Volvo FH series is the heaviest truck series, while the Volvo FL is distribution trucks and municipal vehicles.

Volvo oil specifications have a common name VDS(Volvo Drain Specification) and apply to all truck models of the concern. If there are no oils on the market that meet the requirements of VDS, alternative oils can be used, but regardless of the type of engine, the change should be made at least 15,000 km. In very difficult conditions, or with frequent use of the truck's auxiliary mechanisms, replacement should be carried out after a consumption of 20,000 liters of fuel, and at least once every 6 months.

First VDS- specification for extended drain intervals for engine oils used in obsolete turbocharged diesel engines. Basic requirements: viscosity SAE 15W-40 or 10W-30; quality not lower than API CD;
Additional requirements:
- when tested on a Ford Tornado engine (CEC-L-27-T-29), the maximum permissible degree of cylinder polishing is not more than 25% of the reference oil RL 47.

Road test:
Three Volvo trucks with 12-liter Euro-1 engines are used for road testing (VDS Field Test). Test run distance of at least 300,000 km, with oil change intervals every 50,000 km. During the entire test it is not allowed:
- coking of piston rings;
- increase in the wear rate of parts;
- increase in oil consumption;
- increase in the degree of cylinder polishing;
- an increase in the amount of deposits, compared with normal replacement intervals.

Liqui Moly oils that meet the requirements of the VDS standard -,

VDS-2 - with The standard was developed for Volvo Euro-2 engines that meet the 1996 European requirements for exhaust gas toxicity. VDS-2 oils for Volvo trucks manufactured up to and including 2004. Exceeds VDS requirements in all key parameters.

Basic requirements:

Viscosities SAE 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30, 10W-40 or 15W-40 (other viscosities require approval from Volvo Truck Corporation);

Quality not lower than ACEA E1-96;

Road test:
Three Volvo trucks with 12 liter TD 123 or D12 engines are used for road testing. Test run distance of at least 300,000 km, with oil change intervals every 60,000 km. Throughout the test, oil and fuel consumption is monitored, oil samples are taken after 15,000, 30,000, 45,000 and 60,000 km throughout the entire operation. According to the results of laboratory tests of oil samples, it is not allowed:
- change in viscosity at 100°C (V) over the range:
9 12- decrease in alkaline number to 4 mgKOH / g or less than half of the initial value;
- monitoring of the content of wear metal particles and additive elements is carried out.
At the end of the run, an assessment of the engine condition is carried out, at which the following parameters are limited:
- cleanliness of pistons (CEC MO2 A78);
- wear of piston rings;
- degree of cylinder wall polishing;
- valve play;
- wear and corrosion of bearings.

Liqui Moly oils that meet the requirements of the VDS 2 standard: .

VDS-3- the standard was developed for Volvo Euro-3 engines, but is also recommended for earlier models. VDS-3 oils are not suitable for vehicles with diesel particulate filters (DPF). VDS-3 oils resist the formation of soot, prevent deposits on pistons and cylinder liners, and protect against wear. VDS-3 complies with API CI-4 and ACEA E7. The main difference from VDS 2 is the strengthening of all the main parameters to increase the oil change time. Liqui Moly oils that meet the requirements of the VDS 3 standard:,.

VDS-4- new standard based on API CJ-4 requirements. VDS-4 is more stringent than API CJ-4 on the Mack T-12, Cummins ISM and Cummins ISB tests plus the Volvo D12D test. Oils can be presented in two viscosity ranges SAE 5W-30 and SAE 15W-40. The VDS-4 standard has been developed for all engines manufactured after 2007. VDS-4 engine oils provide better wear protection, improved thermal stability and oxidation stability compared to VDS-3 oils. First of all, the standard is intended for Volvo cars with an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system, DPF (Diesel Particulate Filters) particulate filters and / or an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. In addition, VDS-4 oils can be used in all other Volvo engines, provided low sulfur fuels are used, up to 5000 ppm (0.5%). Liqui Moly oils that meet the requirements of the VDS 4 standard:,.
