For example, before being sent to Russia, our tractor was deprived of all equipment, with the exception of mattresses and a radio. Refrigerator, microwave, TV, everything was filmed. By the way, the refrigerator was filmed in the confusion and it was practically torn out with meat.

It looks like their size is even larger than that of European motors of the same power. The fuel filter-separator also looks very impressive.

Fuel is supplied to it from two tanks, each with a capacity of 530 liters. Only it is impossible to determine the exact amount of fuel in the tank, the device on the panel shows the approximate amount. The rear suspension is pneumatic with semi-springs, the front - leaf springs. The brakes are drum, and the parking energy accumulators are installed only on the rear axle. We also had ABC installed. The big house can rear air suspension. But it is clear that this house is already a bit old: opening the door locks is difficult and the doors themselves close with an unpleasant knock. But you forget about it when you see the huge size of the cabin. The length of the cabin is almost three meters.

The height behind the seats is 2.30 meters. The length of the beds is 2.15 meters. Only when you lie down on a huge bed or make an attempt to jump up to the ceiling, then it seems that so much space is already a lot. Two interesting points. First: these are massive leatherette curtains separating the house from the cabin. And the second: these are cabinets, they came to us already in poor condition without doors. Maybe on American roads the objects lie as if glued, but on Russian roads they will definitely fly around the cabin. But the interior lighting was a pleasant surprise.

But what about, because there are already four batteries installed under the left footrest. The on-board network on Fred is 12 volts, only the starter is 24 volts. The high-pillar driver's seat resembles a bar stool. However, the seat itself is normal on a pneumatic element, there is an adjustment to the lower back. True, the landing is very peculiar and does not quite fit the controls. For example, if you put the steering wheel in a comfortable position, then the left knee rests on the turn switch. If you lower the seat, it is inconvenient to press the pedals, and the road can be seen worse. But in other matters, of course, it all depends on the build of the driver.

The gearshift switch is located on the pedestal to the right of the driver. When you sit behind the wheel, everything is fine. And when you go into the sleeping bag, you will definitely stumble upon this cabinet. And in principle, with such an amount of free space, the driver is somehow cramped here. The instrument panel looks stylish, but resembles an airplane. The indications of small devices are not read very well, and it is not always possible to immediately find the right one among the many toggle switches, out of habit.

Moreover, we even managed to break off the toggle switch of the glass-lifter of the right window, climbing into the sleeping compartment. But the cranes for the parking brake of the tractor and trailer, two large buttons, red and yellow, are in a prominent place. And the mirrors are electrically adjustable: by the way, visibility is very good. We tried to hide the passenger car in the dead zone, pressing close to the right of the truck. But we did not succeed: the car is still visible either through the small window of the passenger door, or in the mirror on the wing of the tractor. It was decided to attach a European Burg trailer to our Fred. Standard length - 13.6 meters, air suspension, tires 385/65 R22.5.

Freightliner calmly drove under the trailer from under which the Mercedes had previously left. So the height of the saddle is not a problem. But then the hitch snapped into place and it became clear that when turning, the front side of the semi-trailer could touch the tractor fairing. I had to unhook the trailer and move the saddle. To do this, click the switch on the panel, and then move the base plate with the crowbars. We had to move the saddle almost to the end, and this procedure took about seven minutes. It immediately turned out that the hitch is not quite serviceable, its lever is not fixed, and you can disengage only with outside help. Connected pneumatic hoses and electrics.

The brakes of the semi-trailer work, but the lighting equipment glows at half power. This is understandable, the semi-trailer bulbs are 24 volts, and the voltage is only 12 volts. I wonder what the traffic police inspector will say when he stops such a road train? Does it fit within the allowed 20 meters in length and 4 in height? Despite the impressive size of the tractor, everything is normal. The length of the road train is 19 meters. If you measure the height to the upper edge of the semi-trailer, then everything is also in order: 3.96 meters. Only the tips of the exhaust pipes go beyond the limit by two centimeters, but I don’t know who would raise their hand to cut them. But after measuring the turning radius, we were amazed - 13.5 meters along the track of the outer front wheel!

KamAZ-5410 has almost two times less than 7.7 meters. This suggests that it is contraindicated to drive into bottlenecks on an American truck. The gearbox on our tractor is called Eaton Fuller AutoShift, it is mechanical, 10-speed, but has an automatic shift system. While we were driving an empty tractor, the box annoyed us with twitches when switching from gear to gear, both in automatic and in manual control mode. Only the start went smoothly, and that's because the clutch is squeezed out when starting and stopping. By the way, it is tight, and you need to depress the pedal to the end, or the system will not understand the command.

With the truck, the shifts became smoother, softer. But still, the American system is inferior to the European ones, because in automatic mode the driver does not have the opportunity to quickly intervene in the operation of the system, for example, by shifting a lower gear. To do this, you must first switch the selector to manual mode, and then press the button, which is inconvenient. To see the number of the included gear, you need to take your eyes off the road, the window is located not in front of your eyes, but to the right of the driver. But you can choose in advance which gear the car will move from by setting the brains of the system by pressing the same buttons. By default, the truck starts in second gear, optionally in fifth gear.

We did just that, without a trailer we started in fifth gear, and with a trailer in second. Even with such a long mileage, the engine has retained its strength, this is felt by how quickly the machine changes gears during acceleration. And in terms of smoothness, Fred loses to the Europeans. Of course, it’s impossible to say that the car is too shaky, after all, the base is long here, and the driver sits behind the front wheels.

Things are worse with the brakes, the pedal is tight, and even not informative. If you press lightly, the truck drives and drives; If you press hard, the train brakes sharply. In short, it is either empty or dense. But the compression engine brake retarder works quite powerfully with a growling sound on the slopes. It has two toggle switches; these toggle switches put two and four cylinders into braking mode, respectively. In addition, you can upset the road train with a parachute paddle - semi-trailer brakes. The same system can be used if we start to climb, even more convenient than with a handbrake.

On a straight line, our Freightliner Classic stays confident, does not scour, does not go off course. And that's why using cruise control is a pleasure. And the maximum is almost 120 km / h! It turned out that the stories that overseas tractors do not have a limiter at all are a myth. In top gear, the tachometer needle froze at around 1500 rpm, with a maximum engine speed of 2100 rpm. At the same time, it is felt that the power reserve is still very large. However, driving a road train with such a mileage at top speed is not a great pleasure. The steering play, the wobbly seat creaks, the panels rattle, and the selector lever shakes like crazy. So in the cockpit, age is much more noticeable than outside.

The consumption of diesel fuel depends on the driving style, no matter how trite it sounds, but if you do not maneuver at full accelerator and switch in time without twisting the engine, then it is quite possible to meet 32-36 liters per hundred.
