Comparative test of engine oil 0w40. The best engine oil: experts choose "Behind the wheel

16.10.2019

How is Zhvanetsky about the difficulties of choice? “Five are very large, but yesterday. And today there are three, but small. Same with engine oil. Expensive imported synthetics, which promises to last 15,000 km, or affordable Russian oil, which is changed twice as often - that's the choice!

Let's set aside the purely monetary question for now. Now we are only interested in the health of the motor, and therefore we will compare the levels of pollution, control wear and tear and evaluate fuel economy.

Let's limit the choice

We are not going to compare the top supersynthetics with the cheapest mineral water, the prices for which sometimes differ by twenty times. We are interested in those oils that can be recommended for the same engine. SAE viscosity grades are required to match - and we will take the most common grade 5W‑40. The quality categories must also match. Modern expensive synthetics do not fall below the SN / CF level according to the API classification (A3 / B4 according to ACEA) - that's where we will stop. The car manufacturer usually does not specify the type of oil, but comparing synthetics with mineral water is somehow awkward.

As a result, we chose two synthetic oils - a European one at the price of 1950 rubles for a four-liter canister and a Russian one: 940 rubles for the same capacity. The European one was taken, and the Russian one - two, since it will have to be changed after 7500 km.

About the methodology

The VAZ‑21126 engine operated on expensive and cheap oils in completely equivalent conditions - in the same modes, on the same gasoline, at the same outside temperature. The number of engine hours in both cases is equivalent to 15,000 km. Moreover, Russian oil was replaced with fresh oil in the middle of the “distance”.

We studied the dynamics of changes in engine parameters (power, efficiency and toxicity of exhaust gases), periodically took samples to investigate the rate of oil aging and the accumulation of wear products. At the end of the tests, the motor was opened and evaluated according to the color scale of the deposits after working on one or another oil. Piston rings and crankshaft bearing shells were weighed before and after testing to assess the wear rate of the main friction units.

What did you see

Expensive oil for a full test cycle did not lose its performance, although the parameters sank noticeably - both for the oil and for the engine. Fuel consumption by the end of the tests has grown by 3-4% compared to the initial stage; power dropped by 2.5%. For 15,000 km of nominal mileage, a little less than a liter of oil was consumed from the initially filled four. That is, the regime "from shift to shift without topping up" was maintained.

When running on budget oil, the engine initially showed a slightly higher fuel consumption (+ 1.5%) than on the European one. Obviously, this is a consequence of a higher viscosity, which, however, does not go beyond the SAE tolerance for oils of this class. This gave a small (practically within the margin of error), but a steady increase in power (slightly less than 1%). The budget oil quite expectedly had a higher aging dynamics. For half the test cycle (7500 km), fuel consumption increased by 2.1% (when working on the road - by 1.5%). The second half of the tests, after changing the oil, the engine worked almost the same - the difference between the final measurements at 7,500 and 15,000 km lies within the measurement error. As a result, the engine worked more economically on two fills of budget oil than on one fill of expensive oil: the difference in favor of the domestic product was 1.1–3.0%, depending on the operating mode (average -1.5%).

Analysis of the main physico-chemical parameters of oils, characterizing the rate of their aging, confirmed the results of motor tests. For expensive oil, at the end of the “run” (15,000 km), the viscosity increased by 11%, the base number decreased by 30%, but the indicators did not go beyond the rejection limits. In inexpensive oil, after 7500 km, the increase in viscosity was 3.5% (first fill) and 5.8% (second fill), and in the sample from the second half of the “run”, the aging rate turned out to be higher: contamination of fresh oil with residues of used oil, which did not merged during replacement. The base number dropped by 13–15% relative to the initial value - by the way, higher (this is good for difficult Russian conditions) than that of expensive European-made oil.

And now let's evaluate the result in money. One canister of expensive European oil, one filter plus the cost of an oil change is about 2350 rubles. Two budget containers, two filters, two replacements - this is 2680 rubles. If the work is not taken into account (that is, change the oil yourself), the costs will be equal - 2050 and 2080 rubles, respectively. And if you take into account the difference in fuel consumption? On domestic oil, the engine was 1.5% more economical, and for each test cycle it ate about a thousand liters of "ninety-fifth". If we take the price equal to 38 rubles per liter, we get 570 rubles of savings. Not much, but the balance has swung towards more frequent oil changes.

However, winning on fuel is not the most important thing. The health of the motor is more important. There are three evaluation criteria: reliability of operation (no failures due to the use of suitable oil), surface cleanliness, wear.

Reliability of work - full. No failures during the tests were recorded, emergency topping up of oil was not required. However, we did not expect anything else from oils of the SN quality group. The level of high-temperature deposits in both cases was almost the same. It is obvious that the Russian oil could not lose to European oil with a higher quality thanks to half the replacement interval. Yes, and the initial (as well as the final) alkaline number of our oil is higher, and this is one of the indirect indicators of washing ability. As for low-temperature deposits on the surfaces of the valve mechanism and oil pan, the European product performed slightly better. Everything is obvious here: it uses a higher quality base oil. However, the difference is close to the error of the test method.

But when assessing the degree of wear, we found a clear effect of an intermediate oil change. This is especially noticeable in the piston rings (and hence in the cylinders). Dirt accumulated in the oil, especially metal particles torn from the surface of parts, works as an abrasive, and no anti-wear additives of the highest quality oil can cope with this trouble. Only the timely removal of the abrasive from the motor will help - when changing the oil. It is impossible to make an exact conversion into rubles in terms of engine wear. But the scales are increasingly leaning in favor of reducing the service interval.

Three or five?

So, our experiment fully proved the feasibility of using two domestic cans (THK Magnum Ultratec, Sintoil Platinum, LUKOIL Lux) instead of one European can (Shell Helix Ultra, Castrol Edge, Mobil Super 3000) - confirmed by both the wallet and the health of the motor.

Of course, you can shorten the oil change interval by always using only an expensive imported product - there will be more benefits for the motor. But we must not forget about reasonable savings either.

In addition, we conducted the tests under ideal laboratory conditions - warm, clean, on proven gasoline. And as practice shows (and our previous research in ZR, 2015, No. 11), even expensive synthetics do not always withstand the notorious 15,000 km of run. Most oilers consider Russian working conditions to be almost extreme. At the same time, everything that happens with engine oil resembles the process of wear of any technical system: until some operating time, aging is almost imperceptible, and then its rate increases sharply. In engineering, this condition is called catastrophic wear - and the same rule applies to oil. It is important to change the oil before this critical moment.

So, even "cool" oil, giving up, causes damage to the motor. And to protect yourself from trouble, you need to replace it more often. If it is not possible to often buy an expensive product, then obviously high-quality affordable oil, subject to its more frequent replacement, is more useful for the motor.

Oils that guarantee the possibility of starting down to minus 35 ° C are entirely synthetic and the most expensive. Today, almost all foreign manufacturers have such. Among domestic ones, we found 0W40 oil in only two - Utech from Yukos and AGA from AJA AvtoMag LLC.

Divide the class into groups

Motor oils are divided not only into classes (by viscosity), but also into groups (by quality level). There are several rating systems. The most famous American classification according to API: oils for gasoline engines are assigned the index SG, SH, SJ, SL, SM - the further the second letter is from the beginning of the alphabet, the higher the oil's ability to withstand loads. The European classification ACEA (designations A2, A3, A4) is gaining more and more popularity. The higher the number, the higher the quality level. For diesel engines, other combinations of letters and numbers are used. It is permissible to fill in the oil that meets or exceeds the quality level required by the vehicle manufacturer. This time we decided to compare only the oils within each group, so there were leaders in each of them.

Physico-chemical properties were checked for the requirements of GOST R 51634-200 and SAE j-300 Dec 99, and the quality compliance with the API group was checked using the “Sliding Ring” device (ЗР, 2006, No. 11). According to the “ring” test, points were given: the more there are, the more readily lacquer deposits form on pistons and cylinders. A lot of deposits are bad for a motor, especially a highly forced one.

Viscosity was measured both at 100°C (the oil flow through the calibrated hole per minute was monitored) and at minus 35°C (the shear force in the rubbing pair was determined, that is, dynamic viscosity). If the dynamic viscosity is greater than 6200 MPa.s, the starter is unlikely to turn the crankshaft.

We checked the pour point, at which the oil thickens so much that it no longer drips. For class 0W40, it will, of course, be below minus 35°C. However, at such a low temperature, the motor may not start for another reason, even if it is untwisted.

We looked at the ash content. According to the standard, it should not exceed 1.3% (the less, the better). If the rate is exceeded - wait for the formation of soot.

GOST overboard

Of the 14 purchased samples, two were beyond the requirements of the standards. Tecsint SX oil does not correspond to the declared 0W40 class - in severe frost, the starter most likely will not crank the crankshaft, Excellium went beyond the standard for ash content - 1.48 instead of the permissible 1.3%.

How to choose oil

Having carefully studied the results obtained, we were convinced that no one succeeded in making the best oil in all respects. Therefore, the choice must be approached creatively.

If your car's engine is already worn out, pay attention to the minimum ash content: why pollute? And if the motor is new, it is better to choose an oil with a minimum score in the “varnish formation” column.

Doubt? Then rely on our arrangement, in which we took into account all three parameters (viscosity, ash content, varnish formation) and, having evaluated each in points (from 1 to 5), received a comprehensive assessment. In it, we considered each parameter to be an equal “player”. If any of them seems more important, make an informed choice based on the tables presented.

There is probably no better lubricant for riding in tough conditions than 0w40. Her performance is fully consistent with the tasks that she performs. Before pouring this engine oil into your own car, you should at least familiarize yourself with the pros and cons of various oil fluids. This will make it possible to correctly apply lubricants, to correctly select the optimal car oil. It should be borne in mind that today the stores sell products of many different brands, in which it is difficult not to get confused.

Synthetics

Synthetic oil is produced by an artificial method, mixing the main fluid and additive substances. The creation of this category of motor oils is due to the fact that the operating conditions of the motor sometimes change. After turning off the engine, it cools down, and after starting it heats up.

When driving, the engine operates in various modes. The temperature, friction speed of the contacting parts and many other parameters change. In view of this, it became necessary to produce an oil that has technical characteristics that do not change due to various factors. At a certain stage in the automotive industry, manufacturers thought about the stability of lubricant performance and its effective use in any conditions.

Viscosity comparison between synthetic and mineral oil

The mineral water was unable to ensure the invariance of properties due to its own limitations, therefore, scientists have developed synthetics that, according to their own parameters, are optimally suited for long-term use. The advantages of synthetic motor oil include:

  • stable base fluid. Synthetics are made from a base that is resistant to external influences. It has no unstable components. In view of this, parts of the engine have excellent protection, the oil does not change its characteristics for a long time, both in winter and in summer;
  • small amount of additives. Synthetics do not need a large number of additives, because the base plays the main role. The more base fluid in the oil, the longer it will last;
  • long life of additives. Synthetic grease is resistant to oxygen, therefore, additive substances “live” for a long time;
  • stability under high temperature conditions. Lubrication performs its own task even at high speeds;
  • reduction in heat generation. Parts of the engine heat up less, therefore, it will work longer;
  • strong oil film. Allows lubrication to protect engine parts as much as possible by forming a film on contacting parts;
  • simplification of starting the engine in the winter season;
  • cleaning the engine from dirt and soot;
  • excellent flow properties in cold conditions.

Engine oils 0w40They are all-weather synthetics, which are recommended to be filled in in winter. However, they perfectly protect the engine in the summer season.

Indicators and marking 0w40

If you want to know what the decoding of 0w40 is, you need to understand its markings. In accordance with the SAE world classification, all lubricants are divided into:

  • winter. They are marked according to SAE with the letter "w". Motor oils of this category are optimal for use in the winter season; they lubricate the internal parts of the engine well;
  • summer. Marked according to SAE number. Optimal for use in summer;
  • all-weather. The best option. They do not need to be drained from the engine when winter/summer has arrived, meaning they are suitable for any season.

It must be remembered that the lower the SAE viscosity index, the thinner the lubricant. Thick motor oils are effective in hot weather, liquid oils in frosty weather. 0w40 oil has "0w" and "40" in the SAE marking. This means that it is all-weather, it can be added to the engine both in summer and in winter. The numbers "0" and "40" indicate low and high temperature viscosity. The temperature limits are:

  • in winter - from minus thirty-five to minus forty;
  • in summer - from plus thirty-five to plus forty.

It becomes obvious that driving 0w40 in summer is possible, but not very rational. It is better to use it in winter.

The main advantages of 0w40 lubricant:

  • fully meets the requirements of most automakers;
  • has excellent performance indicators;
  • makes it easier to start the engine in cold weather;
  • saves fuel, as it is an excellent lubricant;
  • well protects the internal combustion engine, this makes it possible to reduce the wear of its components;
  • cleans the power unit from soot.

Despite the fact that this car oil has high performance indicators, before using it, it is advisable to consult with specialists in the repair and maintenance of cars, and familiarize yourself with the technical documents that came with your car.

Comparison with other oils

5w30

Some drivers do not understand which oil is better: 5w30 or 0w40, whether they can be mixed, what is the difference between them. 5w30 oil has the following temperature limits:

  • maximum - plus twenty-five degrees.

It can be seen that the difference with 0w40 is in a smaller temperature range. Therefore, it is better to buy 0w40 if you live in a very cold/hot area. If you mix lubricants, nothing bad will happen.

5w40

5w40 oil is a semi-synthetic that has almost the same viscosity as 0w40, as evidenced by the temperature limits:

  • minimum - minus thirty degrees;
  • maximum - plus thirty-five degrees.

If we compare 5w40 with 0w40, then the latter is better, as it can be used at a lower temperature. Many motorists do not understand whether these two oils can be mixed. This is not recommended unless otherwise stated in the manufacturer's instructions.

0w20

Car oil 0w20 is completely unsuitable for hot summer conditions, unlike 0w40, because it has the following temperature limits:

  • lower - minus thirty-five degrees;
  • top - plus fifteen degrees.

In the summer in Russia, you can’t ride on such a lubricant, because it does not have sufficient high-temperature viscosity. Mixing with 0w40 is not recommended.

0w30

It is possible to drive on 0w30 oil in a not too hot summer. It differs from 0w40 in that its upper temperature limit is plus twenty-five (ten degrees difference), that is, it has a lower high-temperature viscosity. Mixing with 0w40 is possible, but it's best not to.

5w50

5w50 is commonly used in professional motorsports. It can properly perform its own task even at a temperature of plus forty-five. The difference with the "magpie" lies in the high-temperature viscosity. This lubricant has it higher. However, it is wrong to make comparisons like “5w50 vs 0w40”, since these oils are used in different areas. The first is optimal for racing cars, the second - for ordinary cars with a gasoline / diesel engine.

Summing up, we can understand that the Sorokovka is an excellent choice for city driving in Russian conditions. It is known that in Russia there can be extreme heat in summer, and severe cold in winter. 0w40 is intended just for such climatic conditions. Using it in a milder climate will not be very rational; it is better to fill in a different car oil, for example, 0w20.

If you have doubts about what kind of oil you need to fill in the engine, then you should pay attention to our rating for 2018-2019. This top 10 of the best motor oils was compiled according to buyers. The ideal price-quality ratio, which often comes to the fore when buying, was also taken into account.
