New Land Rover Velar test drive. Range Rover Velar - first test drive

British concern Land Rover seems to have managed to find a recognizable, modern and attractive style. The Velar 2018 model is another confirmation of this. It looks very nice, especially in the R-Dynamic modification. Red body with black accents create an atmosphere of sportiness and audacity.

And "Vilar" was able to quickly find its audience in Europe, because every Western nation was able to find something of its own in it.

Corporate design

The car has found its price category between Sport and Evoque. Outwardly, he is still more like his "big brother", especially in body shape and proportions. But even from the younger model, he received similar sizes, it is quite difficult to visually notice the difference in them.

Land Rover used a similar design for both the front and rear lights in their new cars. Already in basic configuration Velar comes with LEDs, but optionally, the buyer can purchase innovative matrix-laser lights.

Official representatives of the company claim that they are able to shine at a distance of more than half a kilometer. Besides, automatic systems are able to create a shadow area when driving on a highway with low beams. That is, in fact, it can not be transferred to the neighbor, while not blinding the participants in oncoming traffic.

Attention to details

Looking closely at the crossover, it is easy to distinguish whole line small details worked out by British designers. Even a small spoiler above the trunk lid fits perfectly into the design. It allows you to slightly lengthen the car outwardly, making the design harmonious and complete.

Particular attention is drawn to the door handles, which "meet" their owner. When folded, they form an absolutely smooth surface with the door, and when used, they slide out. It is convenient to open them, but it is still not completely clear how such technologies will behave in the conditions of the Russian winter.

For example, the plane will freeze over - can the handles break the years? There is an acute issue with the sink. Water can easily get inside the mechanism and freeze there. I'm afraid, but the likelihood of problems due to such decisions is high. We will be able to find out about this after a couple of years of the model being on the market, when experienced users will express their authoritative opinions.

Modern luxury

Cars under the brand range rover always distinguished by their comfort and luxury. Velar, in addition to this, is also a very technologically advanced machine with a huge number of various digital nodes.

The result is a modern premium, and it's very cool! Despite the fact that huge screens are located inside, and new solutions are used in general, nothing interferes or irritates inside. The buttons located on the steering wheel are very difficult to press by accident.

Nevertheless, certain shortcomings in the cabin are still worth highlighting. For example, a premium-class model worth over 6,000,000 rubles does not have a manual drive for the position of the steering wheel. All manipulations with them must be performed manually. The lever is also not in the best place - to the right of the steering wheel, where cars usually have an ignition switch. Not the best location, but still this node is rarely used by most drivers.

New sensations

If in old Range Rover, we have always met a fairly high landing, the Velar moved away from this trend. You sit low enough in it, you don’t even feel that you are in an SUV. At the same time, in the lower position of the seat height, there are problems with visibility even with a fairly high growth.

The luggage compartment of the crossover is simply huge. It is unlikely that someone will carry sacks of potatoes in it, but for these purposes it would fit perfectly. On the other hand, I recommend ordering divider guides as an option. They will not cost so much (about 15,000 rubles), but you don’t have to constantly get things that flew back from braking.

Summarizing interior fittings, it is worth highlighting the following parameters:

  • Trunk volume from 558 to 1731 liters;
  • Curb weight 2440 kg;
  • Ground clearance from 213 to 251 mm depending on the suspension position.

Dynamics

On our test drive, we had a “fat” R-Dynamic package, under the hood of which there is a three-liter V6 that produces 380 Horse power. According to the documents, the car easily leaves 6 seconds.

In fact, the British SUV gave us a variety of emotions. Of course, in terms of dynamics, everything is fine with him, but even on a “charged” modification, you don’t want to rush somewhere.

It is very comfortable inside, in total the Vilar driver has 4 driving modes:

  • Auto (settings are selected by electronics);
  • comfort ( optimal mode for the city)
  • Eco ("strangles" the engine and saves fuel);
  • Sport (makes the suspension stiff, shifts gears at high speeds).

And if the first three options do not give proper dynamics, then the sporty one, on the contrary, makes a real hungry and twitchy beast out of an urban crossover. The suspension becomes stiffer, but it's still not enough, softness is felt. We had petrol version, perhaps the diesel engine was able to perform better due to smooth acceleration and high torque.

Is it worth it?

There is no denying the fact that Range Rover Velar 2018 is very good! But so you should not lose sight of its cost over 5 million rubles. Basic equipment can be purchased cheaper, but why is it needed for that kind of money?

On the other hand, other representatives of the line perform no worse. The only one significant disadvantage"Velara" - a dissonance of dynamics and comfort. These factors cannot be present at the same time.

I note that the car performs well on the road. On it, without any problems, it will be possible to drive to your country house in winter or in rainy autumn. But the manufacturer still positions the car as an "urban SUV", and he is absolutely right.

Prospects this vehicle excellent. Many are already actively comparing it with the bestseller in the Russian premium market - Toyota. Land cruiser 200. And there is something to argue about.

Just compare the interiors of these SUVs. The British feel noticeably more technologically advanced, you sit and control a space liner. On the other hand, many of these innovations may not be to your taste.

Base "Vilar" declared official dealer at a price of 3,982,000 rubles. But I still advise you to take a closer look at the R-Dynamic modification. It looks much more attractive, and yet will give enough dynamics for the city. By the way, it costs not much more in the standard version - from 4,195,000 rubles.

Photos of the new Range Rover Velar:

IN last years British automotive design incredibly happy. Jaguar F-Pace, Aston Martin DB11, Range Rover Velar and McLaren 720S are examples of stunning beauties that have appeared on the market either relatively recently, or literally just now. Each of these cars is interesting in its own way, however, the most balanced and perfect, in my opinion, is the Velar.

The Range Rover Velar is a mid-size premium crossover that sits between the Evoque and Sport in the brand's lineup, as evidenced by dimensions novelties. So the length of the Velar is 4.803 mm, the width is 2.032 mm, and the height is 1.665 mm. The size of the wheelbase of this SUV is 2.874 mm and with an accuracy of 1 mm coincides with the wheelbase of another representative Jaguar Land Rover-F-Pace. This coincidence is not accidental - Range Rover Velar and Jaguar F-Pace are built on common platform. Therefore, two cars have the same suspension schemes: the front one - on two wishbones and rear - multi-link, Integral Link, as well as steering with electromechanical amplifier. In addition, they have many common body parts, and the proportion of aluminum in its design is the same - 81 percent.

Matches Velar with F-Pace and range of engines. It opens with a four-cylinder diesel D180 of the Ingenium family with a volume of 1.999 cubic meters. see. Equipped with a turbocharger, this engine develops a maximum power of 180 hp. at 4,000 rpm and a torque of 430 Nm at 1,500 rpm. Velar with such an engine speeds up to 209 km / h, and accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.9 seconds. Fuel consumption in combined cycle the D180 modification is 5.4 l / 100 km, but CO2 emissions are 142 g / km.

The next in the line of engines is the D240 diesel. By and large, this is still the same engine, but equipped with two turbochargers. Its power reaches 240 hp and the torque is 500 Nm. As a result, Velar D240 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and has a top speed of 217 km/h. Average consumption fuel (compared to the predecessor engine) has increased to 5.8 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of 154 g/km.

The largest (from diesels) power and torque (300 hp, 700 Nm) are produced by the V-shaped "six" D300 with a volume of 2.933 cubic meters. cm, which allows you to develop a “hundred” in 6.5 seconds and a “maximum speed” of 241 km / h. The average fuel consumption of the Velar D300 is 6.4 l/100 km and the emission level is 167 g/km. True, British colleagues write that the V-shaped "six" does not have long to live - it will be replaced by the latest in-line engine with the same number of cylinders.

The same fate awaits a V-shaped gasoline engine with a volume of 2.995 cubic meters. see However, today the P380 modification is positioned as the fastest - its maximum speed is 250 km / h (electronically limited), and the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km / h is 5.7 seconds. Average fuel consumption is 9.4 l/100 km.

The second gasoline unit is an in-line engine from the Ingenium family with a working volume of 1.997 cubic meters. see This turbo four, designated P250, develops 250 hp. at 5,500 rpm and a torque of 365 Nm between 1,200 and 4,500 rpm. Velar P250 speed can reach up to 217 km / h, and the dynamics - 6.7 seconds to "hundreds". Combined fuel consumption is 7.6 l/100 km and CO2 emissions are 173 g/km.

At the same time, by the end of this year, the British manufacturer promises to release a forced version of the P250 version - the P300 engine, which, as can be seen from the designation, will develop 300 hp.

If the engine lines of the Range Rover Velar and Jaguar F-Pace are completely the same, then there are significant differences in the transmissions of these machines. Unlike the F-Pace, the Velar does not come with rear-wheel drive and a manual transmission, only four-wheel drive with a front axle connected by a clutch and an 8-speed "automatic" from ZF. In addition, Velar has a locking rear differential - in the base for modifications with V6, optionally - for other versions.

A similar situation is observed with the suspension. The fact is that in addition to the option with steel springs, which provides ground clearance in 213 mm, pneumatics are offered for the Range Rover Velar - again, for cars with a V6 already in the basic version. A car with such a suspension has a standard ground clearance of 205 mm. At a speed of 105 km / h, it is reduced by 10 mm (to 195 mm), in order to improve aerodynamics. The maximum possible ground clearance for a crossover with air suspension is 251 mm (+46 mm to the standard position). It is possible only at speeds up to 50 km / h, and at 50-80 km / h the clearance will automatically decrease by 18 mm (up to 233 mm). And finally, when the ignition is turned off, the car lowers 40 mm from standard position(up to 165 mm) to make it easier to load things. By the way, Velar is the first case of combining air suspension and iQ aluminum platform. Yes, one more thing: the shock absorbers on this car are electronically controlled, and already in the basic configuration.

And, of course, the Range Rover uses Terrain Response (in the "base") or even Terrain Response 2 (as an option or in the base version on the First Edition special version). Let me remind you that the Terrain Response system has the following operation algorithms: Eco, Comfort, Grass / Gravel / Snow, Mud and Ruts, Sand, as well as Dynamic (the latter is only for R-Dynamic versions ). Well, in Terrain Response 2, an automatic adaptation mode has also been added. In addition, the Range Rover arsenal includes off-road cruise control operating in the speed range from 3.6 to 30 km / h, a special start function at bad grip with the road, as well as an assistant for descent from slopes. And finally, Velar can safely tow a trailer weighing up to 2.5 tons - in this case, the Advanced Tow Assist technology helps the driver.

Thus, it can be noted that the Velar remains a Range Rover. And, on the one hand, in comparison with the same Jaguar F-Pace, Velar has increased off-road capabilities (for example, overcomes a ford with a depth of 650 mm), and on the other hand, it provides an improved level of comfort. By the way, thanks to the longer body length, the Velar trunk volume reaches 632 liters - under the shelf or 1731 liters - with the rear seats folded down.

But still, the most amazing thing about this car is its design! The history of the Velar began with the desire to build a car with its own unique character (not just a new version of the Range Rover) and timeless beauty. As you know, the key to the "eternal" design lies in its simplicity and purity of lines. However, this is much easier said than done, as simplicity is the hardest part of design. This art can be learned throughout life. By the way, if you are careful, you can see that the design of Range Rover models has gradually evolved in this direction.

And, as the designers themselves say, they worked on Velar "with an unshakable belief in reductionism." As far as I understood this idea, the guys sought to achieve the perfection of literally every detail, in order to then combine them all into a single equally perfect whole. The converse statement is also true - a correctly comprehended and conscious common goal served as a guarantor of the appearance of beautiful concrete solutions.

Fortunately, the work went from the first sketches. And when Ratan Tata looked at them, then, according to Jerry McGovern, chief designer of the Range Rover brand, “he became a passionate advocate for this car,” which, of course, contributed to the success of the project.

As a result, in my opinion, the British have created a simply amazing crossover. Its design is distinguished by unique proportions, an interesting silhouette, very smooth body surfaces and an almost complete absence of decor (with the exception of “copper-like” inserts). As for the individual details, they are not only skillfully crafted on their own, but also elegantly visually connected to the overall image of the car. Technique on Velar and that is put at the service of design. So retractable handles of the body, of course, improve aerodynamics, but, first of all, ensure the cleanliness of the surface. Looks great compact and slim LED headlights Velar, which are offered in four versions - up to matrix-laser, in which the range of the light beam reaches 550 m.

The interior of the Range Rover Velar crossover is a mirror image of its exterior - there is nothing superfluous here either. As in the exterior, one of the main design elements in the Velara salon is technology. We are talking about the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, which the car is already equipped with in the basic version. This system uses a pair of 10" touchscreen displays high definition, which are installed in the center console area one below the other.

It should be noted that the design of these displays is worked out so carefully that they look great even when turned off. And when turned on, the Touch Pro Duo system provides not only beauty, but also an intuitive interface. A pair of screens is clearly divided functionally: on the upper one, “pictures” are displayed, while the crossover systems are controlled through the lower display. In fairness, it must be added that the three physical handles on the console still remain, but they are also context-sensitive: if the display is in this moment time the climate control menu is displayed, then turning the knob adjusts the temperature, and if the Terrain Response menu, then the operation modes of the electronics of this system are already controlled. I will add that there are even touch keys on the steering wheel, and their purpose can also change. And one more thing: the top screen can tilt within 30 degrees, which makes it possible to adjust it to people of different heights. The position is remembered and the monitor returns to it every time it is restarted.

Of course, Velar's driver's instrument panel is also electronic, with a diagonal of 12.3 inches. The image on the screen may change depending on the selected driving mode and the individual preferences of the driver. However, the manufacturer retained the choice of analog devices. And Velar also has projection display new generation - with beautiful graphics and excellent resolution.

Interestingly, the monitors of the Touch Pro Duo system are harmoniously combined with the second design feature of the Velar interior - seats, as well as other interior details, upholstered in fabric from the Danish company Kvadrat, one of the leaders in the global textile industry. Kvadrat fabric is 30% wool and 70% recycled polyester plastic bottles. It is not only pleasant to the touch, but also very strong, durable in operation. Range Rover designers liked the Danish design so much that they eventually want to make it their signature and try to shift the focus of consumers to textiles. It seems that the British are introducing a sort of newfangled eco-friendly tablet-glamor chic. However, if you are so out of date, then when buying a Velar, you can order leather upholstery.

Interior upholstery with fabric from the Danish company Kvadrat

Of course, in the premium Velara you can also find something that rather refers to traditional luxury: four-zone climate control, front seats with 20-way adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage, rear seats with servo-back tilt, Meridian audio system - with 17 or 23 speakers, up to 1.600 W, panoramic (fixed or sliding) roof and air ionizer. Useful containers are also available, such as a cooled 7.5-litre glove box, a 4-litre compartment under the center armrest, and cup holders.

Driving comfort, and not just increasing the level of safety, is also facilitated by modern digital assistants: cameras all-round view, adaptive cruise control, parking assistance system (parallel and perpendicular), traffic sign reading technology, driver monitoring system and a number of other assistants. And yet the main thing about the Range Rover Velar is its design - elegant, charming and emotional - turning this car into an object of desire.

We got behind the wheel of the sexy new Range Rover Velar for a test drive and it proved to be very capable on and off the road.

pros: Very interesting design and the interior of the cabin, a large number of trim levels to choose from, powerful engines, unsurpassed Range Rover exterior, smart electronics.

Minuses: unable to connect to multimedia system phone on iOS or Android (which is very bad at such a price for a Range Rover Velar), tire noise is heard in the cabin at speed, there is little room for rear passengers.

Main competitors: Porsche Macan, Audi Q5 , BMW X4, BMW X3 , Jaguar F-Pace, Mercedes GLC.

No wonder you'll be waiting at least over a month if you order the Velar now - it's one of the most coveted crossovers you can buy. It's modern, super stylish and will pamper you with an impressive level of comfort and refinement, plus all the same crossover capabilities you'll find in the Land Rover Discovery. However, Velar is not as cheap as the latter, and many rivals offer better technology and more space for passengers. Regardless, we have no doubt that the Velar will be another massive hit for Jaguar Land Rover.

With the growth in sales that other models of the concern show, you expect that the mass character of this crossover will only grow, but so far this is not happening. So can the new Range Rover Velar prove that the company still has a fuse? This is what the 2017 Range Rover Velar test drive will show.

2017 Range Rover Velar first review

Velar should occupy a market niche in the price segment between the Range models Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport and take a fresh look at RR's crossover family. Slim LED headlights and rear lights that wrap around the car, a more slanted grille and an invisible test-drive door handle give the Range Rover a new look.

It is a clean and uncluttered style with fine detail such as fold lines running from front light to the rear through the elongated side vents. And it's proof that design director Gerry McGovern is a true talent.

Land Rover calls this "reductionist" styling, and the styling is further emphasized by the interiors - one of the most stunning interiors we've ever seen on a test drive. The traditional clean horizontal line is traversed by a center section running from the center console all the way to the all-new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system.

Photos of the new Range Rover Velar

The two 10-inch touch screens are both a work of art and a genius in terms of usability. When they are off, they hide the black panels, adding to the minimalist interior. But when the car is turned on, the panels come to life with high-definition displays and the top unit swivels forward 30 degrees to greet you.

Embedded at the bottom of the bottom screen are two large dials with their own LED displays and a central volume knob. The lower monitor controls heating and ventilation, as well as an improved terrain system, with two sets working with either setting. The top screen will run the navigation, phone and audio system, while both screens were easy to use, rolling from one control to the next.

It is a truly intuitive system and easily connects to your smartphone. There's an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot if you want to connect to the internet from your devices, and the car learns your routes and makes suggestions to avoid traffic or help you find a parking spot. Moreover, during the test drive of the Range Rover Velar, the navigation system worked just fine. There are three Meridian stereos on sale to choose from.

Ok, we started with good news, now it's the turn of the bad guys - RR Velar still can't help you if you want to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. In this regard, the company clearly lags behind its competitors.

Range Rover Velar test drive by Stenni

This also applies to autonomous technologies. Undoubtedly, on a test drive, the Range Rover Velar showed how good its adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, driving assistance system, system automatic parking and recognition of road signs. For example, the Volvo XC60 on a test drive showed no signs of an emphasis on self driving. But this car is pretty close to autopilot, and it also offers a beautifully built, stylish interior and an easy-to-use touchscreen.

On the issue of cost - the price range varies quite a lot depending on the configuration and modification, starting at 3,900,000 rubles for the base Velar model with a 250 hp four-cylinder gasoline engine. Even though it's a base model, it's reasonably well-equipped. But if your dealer cannot convince you to buy a Range Rover Velar in the First Edition package for more than 7,200,000 rubles with a simple huge wheels, Meridian sound system and navigation, they don't do their job.

But if you just want to look sportier without overpaying, then the R-Dynamic package (which was on the test drive) will save you a lot of money worth from 4.6 million rubles.

Other engines include two more diesels: a 2-litre inline and a 3-litre V6. There are three versions gasoline engines: 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 3.0-liter V6 with 250 hp or a 3.0-liter flagship V6 that produces a mind-blowing 375 hp.

We suspect that the 2.0-litre diesel in SE trim may well be the sweet spot in huge assortment choice of modifications (a total of 27 complete sets are presented in Russia), but now we have a 3.0-liter diesel engine in the R-Dynamic HSE specification on a test drive (approx. translator). This equipment is beautiful and well equipped and looks very expensive.

Our test drive route for the Range Rover Velar in Norway was free of motorways, so we'll have to wait and see how the Velar gets by on the adaptive cruise control, but it appears to be a superbly refined car to drive. It is difficult to convey the sensations that a V6 diesel under the hood gives, if you are accelerating strongly, perhaps it is better for you to take this car for a test drive in a car dealership. But on larger wheels, you will notice a bit of road noise, and this is not exactly a plus for the Range Rover Velar.

To get to high-level competitions, such as Wimbledon, you have to go through the toughest selection. With cars the same parsley. For example, the midsize premium crossover niche has long been dominated by the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK/GLC. Then the Porsche Macan joined their company. It would seem that no one else will get to this closed tournament. However, the Jaguar F‑Pace managed to dilute the German party, having passed through the sieve of qualifications in the face, which was taken to the largest motor shows.

Range Rover Velar fired without any qualification at all - he entered the championship with a wild card, a special sports invitation. An unprecedented thing: the British did not bother with the prototype and immediately showed the world production car. It looks like a concept car, on which numbers were hung, than our editor-in-chief (ZR, No. 5, 2017). The breed is felt in each line, and under the varnish of the body - the same iQ platform as the "f-pace".

Velar's body is 81% aluminum. The suspension is also made of (double-lever front and multi-link Integral Link rear). But even apart from the pedigree, design and engineering delights, this Range Rover is damn good, as I was convinced of on the roads of Norway.

Their union is wonderful!

In politics, it is considered bad form if a high-ranking husband and wife work in the same department. In business, everything is different - spouses working in tandem bring more benefits. In the case of Velar, this is exactly what happened: Massimo Frascella was responsible for the exterior design, and Amy Frascella was responsible for the selection of colors and finishing materials. The result of the work of the Italian couple is magnificent: a stylish, avant-garde car! All classmates seemed to have become old-fashioned, even the status Range Rover Sport turned pale. The proportions were especially successful: I associate Velar with a coupe.

Retractable door handles are class. But you take the handle ... and you feel the backlash. And this is on a new car! And what will happen in five years?

The salon is a feast for epicurean gadget lovers. The entire center console is given over to two ten-inch touch screens. Brightness, resolution and animation are no worse than those of iPads. Usage logic - on high level, and the performance is provided by a quad-core processor. Wi-Fi router allows you to connect up to eight gadgets.

It is clear that the screens are instantly covered with fingerprints. But something else worried me: drop a phone or a bottle of soda on an inclined display - and a skiff. The English say that glass is strong. But they can't say otherwise!

Test Velars are all equipped with a virtual instrument panel. It is bright, elegant and allows you to change the configuration of the scales. But this change occurs twenty seconds after you gave the command. Against this background, the imperfection of the voice acting of the navigator (“after twenty-one kilometers, turn right”) is just an innocent prank. The projection screen works clearly, in addition, the picture is supplemented with information about the playing track or radio station.

Build quality? Better than in the related Jaguar: both materials are richer, and “jambs” like flash are not found. And for a surcharge of 376,000 rubles, as an alternative to standard leather, they offer ... fabric upholstery! Say it doesn't happen? It happens if the fabric is the Danish brand Kvadrat. It contains a third of wool, which makes it extremely comfortable to sit on “furniture” covered with such material. I especially liked the soft headrests, which I rubbed like a cat on the owner's leg. Except he didn't purr.

Ingenium engine - power machines

ruler Velar engines completely adopted from "ef-peace". Open the range of four-cylinder aluminum: two diesel engines (180 or 240 "horses") and two gasoline (250 or 300 hp) They will have the lion's share of demand. At the request to give the key to the 300-strong modification (this engine is the freshest in the range), the British lowered their eyes. As it turned out, only V6 versions were brought to Norway - diesel (300 hp) and gasoline (340 hp).

Gasoline "six" starts up casually - without a rolling roar, which announces the surroundings of F‑Pace. Ideology! Velar was sharpened for comfort. If you want more sporty notes - take Jaguar. However, Velar starts energetically and fits into the declared 5.7 seconds to hundreds. Competitors with 3-liter “sixes” are a little faster: the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 (367 hp) spurts up to a hundred in 4.7 seconds, and the Porsche Macan S (340 hp) and Audi SQ5 (365 hp). s.) - for 5.4. I am sure that the appearance of a hot version of Velar SVR is not far off.

Where there is no lag, it is in the smoothness of the ride. Even on a hard comb, this Range Rover evokes a sense of levitation that the Jaguar can't. Because - which is not allowed for the Jaguar even for an extra charge.

The chassis provides a good balance of comfort and handling. At first, the steering wheel seemed unreasonably light, but thanks to the Configurable Dynamics system, which allows you to change driving settings, I was able to “weight” it. The suspension was left clamped - so the buildup on road waves is less felt.

In straight sections, the car flies with reinforced concrete confidence, and in high-speed turns it is not averse to wag its tail a little - this is a feature all-wheel drive transmission IDD (Intelligent Driveline Dynamics) with multi-plate clutch in front wheel drive. Under normal conditions, all the thrust goes to the rear, but if necessary, the clutch is blocked, stabilizing the machine. Increased confidence is given by the automatic locking of the rear differential, which distributes traction between the wheels: you can “open” earlier in the turn. In general, everything is fine, but the Porsche Macan will still taste better.

The adaptive cruise control works as it should: the Velar follows the lead vehicle like a thread following a needle. But the lane retention system does not always see the markings, allowing you to drive into the oncoming lane or the roadside.

Diesel Velar is another planet. I got tired of driving quickly, although 700 newton meters is a force! Acceleration is somehow crumpled, with turbo hitches - after all, here is a turbocharger, and not drive supercharger, like a gasoline "six".

In addition to decent economy (an average of 10 l / 100 km), I liked the diesel car more than the petrol one only because the rev limiter works softly and delicately, while the petrol V6 convulses for three seconds.

Over the mountains, over the valleys

Norway is used to being called the country of the fjords, but there are plenty of other sights here as well. For example, the picturesque Sunnmer Alps in the west of the country. On many peaks, the snow does not melt even in summer. Upstairs, to the "sugar loaves", numerous cars of tourists stretch.

But they are driving on asphalt, and we have to make an “ascent” along an abandoned rocky path. Challenge!

Ersatz SUV is not about Velar. I am translating the Terrain Control system (it adapts the settings of the accelerator, transmission and stabilization system to different road conditions) into the mountain mode and, “without waiting for peritonitis”, I give the command to the air suspension to raise the body. A few seconds, and the clearance increased from the standard 205 to 251 mm.

The first minutes were spent on zeroing - I didn’t immediately get used to the fact that the Velar passes through huge stones without even striking them with its belly. Added a move.

The suspension successfully swallowed the gullies that came across. So the biggest problem on this stretch was my ears - they were blocked from the height difference.

I drove down, turning on the ASPC (All Surface Progress Control) system - this is a kind of off-road cruise control. Set 10 km/h and drive. It would seem, just turn the steering wheel! It didn't work out. During jumps on stones, the electronics went crazy and released the brakes. After a moment's hesitation, he drove on himself, without the help of electronics.

Be that as it may, in terms of cross-country ability and adaptability to off-road, Velar is ahead of the mentioned competitors. But it's also more expensive!

Basic Velar goal like a falcon. Do you want air suspension? Prepare 122,400 rubles. For active rear differential you need to pay 61,200 rubles, for Terrain Response - 11,300, for ASPC - 26,100, for Configurable Dynamics - 14,000, for adaptive cruise control - 99,500 rubles. And for full size spare tire will have to pay: 25 300 rubles. The most expensive options are matrix laser headlights and a matte finish: 198,600 and 156,500 rubles, respectively.

The price of the car in ceremonial versions is approaching eight million. So it is unlikely that Velar will take away many buyers from German competitors. Rather, he will gobble up the Range Rover Sport! And this is the biggest headache for the British. I wonder if a neophyte can beat a classic?
