The oil pressure light is on. Oil sensor lit up

The oil pressure light is on. Oil sensor lit up

The operation of a car often provides a variety of surprises that become difficult questions for the owner. For example, if the oil pressure light comes on in your car on the road, problems can be associated with dozens of various mechanisms. The problem is not necessarily in the amount of lubricant, although such a variant of the problem is quite possible. Indication low pressure oil often turns out to be a rather serious signal, after which a full diagnostics of the power unit should be carried out and the unit that has failed should be repaired.

If your car's oil pressure light comes on while driving, don't wait for the engine to completely fail. This light is an indicator that the unit has serious problems. Many believe that with a light bulb, you can drive a few more kilometers to the service station to fix the problem. In fact, the movement with a lit emergency lamp showing an insufficient amount oil in the system is not possible. This will lead to serious and costly consequences.

What to do if the oil pressure light comes on

If on the road you notice that the light with the image of an oil can periodically lights up or starts to shine constantly, you must first stop the car and turn off the engine. Problems can be very different, therefore, before investigating the problem, it is better not to start power unit. When the car is turned off, do not immediately run and check the level of the lubricant, because this way you will not get reliable results. It is worth performing a fairly simple algorithm of actions that is available for every driver without exception:

  • completely stop the car, turn off the engine to prevent serious problems;
  • wait a few minutes until the oil cools down a bit and drains into the crankcase along the parts of the power unit;
  • remove the dipstick from the crankcase and wipe it with a dry cloth to avoid incorrect level readings;
  • check the oil level by inserting the dipstick in place and removing it again, noticing the actual fluid level;
  • if necessary, add oil to the crankcase to normal level(between min and max, closer to max);
  • try to start the power unit, and if the light does not go out after starting, immediately turn off the engine;
  • call a tow truck or take the car in tow and transport the car to the nearest service station;
  • perform a detailed diagnosis, find the problem and be sure to completely eliminate it.

Here is such a simple procedure provided if the oil pressure light starts to burn or flash. The most common problem with this indication is insufficient level oils. This is especially true for those cars that, for technological reasons, consume a certain amount of engine oil. Do not forget to add liquid for normal lubrication of all engine parts. Unit operation without enough oil is fraught with the most unexpected and unpleasant consequences.

What components can break if the oil pressure light is on?

Question about possible breakdowns rather complicated, because there is whole line variants of malfunctions, which are expressed by indicating an incorrect oil pressure indicator. As mentioned above, it is often enough to simply add technical fluid into the crankcase to restore full engine performance. Often, such a solution to the problem does not help, that is, you have to look for other options for solving the problem, to carry out detailed diagnostics. Such a problem is not always directly related to the power unit, but often speaks precisely of its malfunctions. The main reasons may be the following:

  • loss of compression in one cylinder or in several cylinders at once due to high wear of parts;
  • penetration of the engine crankcase and oil leakage through the hole, as well as a poorly screwed crankcase plug;
  • too high wear piston group, which causes a constant high flow oils;
  • breaking oil pump, lack of oil pumping into the engine system and failure indication;
  • problems with the crankshaft, which can be very different, but cause oil loss;
  • a malfunction of the oil pressure sensor itself, which causes an unreasonable indication of a breakdown;
  • contact closure, which is responsible for demonstrating problems with the engine lubrication system.

Not necessarily a burning oil pressure light tells you what you have to do overhaul car engine. Sometimes the problem lies in the electrician, and in other cases, it is enough to fix a small malfunction of the power unit. But more are possible backfire. Especially expensive repairs It turns out in cases where the driver does not pay attention to the burning oil sensor light. In this case, it is possible to make real garbage from a completely healthy power unit that cannot be restored.

Repair work after driving without oil

When the engine is running without good lubrication, the unit has very little chance of survival. Within a few minutes, the wear of the piston group reaches a maximum possible level. Picking up speed in this state of the engine will mean an almost guaranteed loss of the unit's vital functions. Repairs are best done after the evacuation of the car, as soon as the light starts to burn. In this case, it will often be possible to get by with small costs. If the unit runs without oil, problems can increase significantly:

  • new tasks for repairing the engine due to its wear will be added to existing problems;
  • the piston group is almost guaranteed to be replaced, which will make repairs unrealistically expensive;
  • the entire oil supply system is also likely to be replaced at a huge cost to the owner;
  • repairs will have to be carried out at a professional station, because disassembling the engine is not an easy process;
  • use of poor quality parts this case will not work, because the machine will completely lose reliability;
  • clear computer diagnostics to help identify affected nodes.

After service diagnostics long trip without oil will truly surprise you with its scope. For just one check, you will have to pay a very impressive amount of money. However, after such a situation, it is imperative to perform good check car and get information about the damage. Often after such adventures it turns out to be much more profitable to purchase new engine or a contract power unit than to look for any solution to this problem. We suggest looking at self-diagnosis domestic auto with oil light on:

Summing up

An oil pressure light on the road is almost guaranteed to promise serious problems to the owner of the car. The easiest problem that is possible in this situation is problems with electrical system or failure of the oil pressure sensor. Otherwise repair work become quite expensive and very time-consuming process. This is especially true for those cases when the owner of the car drives for a long time with the pressure light on.

Indication of any problems in your car deserves due attention. With almost any problems, it is dangerous to continue driving a car, because you can harm the vehicle. Modern sensors in cars rarely break down and cause any problems for car owners. Therefore, often the culprit of a light bulb is a problem with oil. Have you ever had a situation where the oil pressure light came on while driving?

To defeat friction in engines internal combustion, apply special engine oils. Friction without oil leads to overheating and wear of the crankshaft, pistons, camshaft, turbine. Therefore, the health of the lubrication system must be constantly monitored. In order for the driver to be aware of breakdowns, dashboard there is a special lamp in the form of an oil can.

Purpose of the oil pressure light on the dashboard

Oil pressure monitoring is a common practice in modern cars. There is always a red light on the dashboard, which allows the driver to keep the situation under control. Some manufacturers also display analog or digital pointers oil pressure. However, for safe operation car, it is enough to know how the oil pressure lamp functions.

Most manufacturers designate oil pressure with the "oil can" symbol.

How the oil pressure light works

Sitting behind the wheel of a car, the driver turns on the ignition. On the dashboard, he will see a red oil pressure light. This means that the sensors are working, the wiring from the sensors to the instrument panel is intact, the bulbs have not burned out. If this lamp does not light, you should invite a specialist to check the wiring leading from the sensors. Another reason for a non-working light bulb is a burned-out LED on the dashboard or damage to the panel itself. In this case, it is necessary to put all the components in order, since obviously non-working oil pressure control devices can mislead the motorist.

After starting the engine, the driver will see that the oil pressure light has gone out. This is fine. The oil pump pumps oil from the sump, it enters through the filter through the channels to the rubbing parts, fills the hydraulic lifters. Special sensors are installed in the filter block or on the cylinder head, which are triggered if the oil pressure is normal. As soon as the oil pressure drops, the sensors turn off and the light on the dashboard lights up. This is a signal to the driver that there is a problem with the oil pressure.

IN modern engines a more complex system is arranged - there are several sensors that allow you to track the oil pressure at any temperature amplitudes and engine speeds.

If the light does not go out after starting the engine, you need to turn it off. Running without oil can damage bearings on crankshaft and damage other moving parts.

Video: what happens if you drive 14 km without oil

What to do if there is a problem on the road? The most logical course of action is to check the main causes of low oil pressure as they become more expensive.

Lack of oil in the engine sump

Where can it go? Worn out engines use up oil in operation, loose gaskets cause oil to leak to the ground, a faulty turbine or damaged housing will cause pressurized oil to escape. Open the hood, look engine compartment and the ground under the car - the oil leaves greasy traces, and it is impossible not to notice them.

Each internal combustion engine has a special dipstick that checks the oil level.

The dipstick ring is brightly colored

Checking the oil level is easy enough. It is necessary to completely pull out the dipstick, wipe it with a rag or napkin, insert it back until it stops. Then pull it out again to check the oil level. It should be between the top and bottom lines on the dipstick.

The oil level must be within the marks on the dipstick.

When low level oil must be topped up. It should be topped up in small portions, controlling the level.

The place where you need to fill in the oil is indicated by the already familiar symbol "oiler"

Sensor or wiring fault

Over time, the connectors oxidize, during repairs, the wires cling and come off. You need to remove the connectors, inspect them for oxidation. The oxide on the connectors is usually green or dark brown color. This plaque should be carefully cleaned with a file or sandpaper.

A build-up of dirt and oxides prevents the passage of electric current

Very often, troubles are hidden precisely in the sensors, but without checking the oil pressure with a pressure gauge, this will not be clear. You can assess the condition of the sensor visually - is there any damage, the connectors are not loose, is there a wire on it at all.

The oil pressure sensor is usually located next to the oil filter or on the cylinder head. Depending on the model of the car, the sensor can be placed in completely different places. To determine exactly where it is, you need to study the manual for the operation and repair of the car, or ask an auto mechanic.

The only way to check if the sensor is working is to replace it with a known good one.

Wrong oil

If a worn engine is filled with too much liquid oil, the pump will not be able to generate the required pressure. Therefore, it is better to use oils prescribed by the manufacturer. Contact a specialized oil change service. Employees of these institutions have catalogs of oils recommended for various brands auto.

IN worn out engines Condensation collects in the oil or coolant enters the oil. This leads to the appearance of an air-oil emulsion, which reduces the pressure in the oil lines (air is compressed, unlike oil). The emulsion is clearly visible when the oil filler neck is opened.

Yellow-brown foam on the oil filler neck - a sign of foreign liquids getting into the oil

If there is a lot of emulsion, you need to change the oil and eliminate the cause of the liquid getting into the oil. If it is condensate, you should periodically “walk” the car over long distances. If it is coolant, replace cylinder head gasket and test engine parts for leaks.

Clogged or defective oil filter

If you have changed the oil for a long time, and added oil various manufacturers- sediments and resins can tightly clog the surface of the filter element. If the trouble arose after changing the oil, most likely you were given a filter that does not fit this car model. Automotive filters equipped with a special valve that keeps part of the oil in the filter. Incorrect valve design will "lock" the oil in the filter and prevent it from moving through the channels. Changing the oil and filters should eliminate these causes.

The rest of the reasons require for the diagnosis of the presence special tools, and to troubleshoot you need a garage and repair skills. Therefore, it is best to entrust repairs to specialists from a service station.

Clogged or defective oil filter threatens with breakage and engine damage

How to identify and fix more complex breakdowns

To determine the reasons why the oil pressure light is on, the specialist will definitely perform the following operations:

  • check oil pressure;
  • diagnoses wiring faults;
  • test the status of the sensors.

As a result of these operations, enough data will be obtained to determine the cause of the malfunction with a high degree of probability.

Clogged oil receiver

Oil pressure doesn't increase at any RPM.

Breakage is eliminated by mechanical cleaning oil receiver grids, for which you have to remove the engine pan. To this end, you need to drain the oil and unscrew all the bolts that secure the pan.

The oil receiver grid must be removed and cleaned of contaminants.

Be sure to check the oil pickup tube. If it is poorly screwed or has holes, the oil pump will suck in air through these leaks, and the oil pressure will be low.

Video: clogged oil intake mesh

Faulty oil pump or pressure relief valve

The oil pressure is low, it increases slightly with increasing speed. The problem is fixed only by replacing the oil pump.

The diagnosis of this unit is simple - you need to remove the oil pump, clamp drive shaft into the drill chuck, lower the oil intake into the oil container and start the drill. The oil should flow steadily. Be sure to check the drill at low speeds - there is a risk of getting dirty or splashing everything around.

It is better to entrust the replacement of the oil pump to qualified auto mechanics, but with experience it is quite possible to handle it yourself. The motors of each automaker are different, so it is advisable to carefully study the instructions for the repair and operation of your car before starting work.

Video: an example of replacing an oil pump on an engine

With the sump removed, most engines have access to the oil pump mountings. Having unscrewed all the bolts that secure the pump, carefully remove it. We try not to damage the seals and the interface between the oil pump and the oil channels. When installing a new pump, the main requirement is cleanliness. The presence of dirt or sand, which can lead to depressurization of the oil channels, is not allowed. New part should clearly fall into place, without effort and deformation. Pay attention to alignment when installing. drive shaft and oil holes.

Worn crankshaft bearings

The lamp is lit for idling, and when the engine speed increases, it will go out. You will need to diagnose the crankshaft and replace the liners.

It is better to entrust this operation to car mechanics-minders. They have a sufficient supply of knowledge and skills, as well as tools and access to high-tech equipment. It is better for people without experience not to carry out work on the crankshaft of the engine, since the price of an error is a new engine. If you decide to check and replace the bearings yourself, refer to your vehicle's owner's manual. Observe all tightening torques and the order of work.

Diagnostics crankshaft possible only if it is removed and a micrometer is present. To remove the crankshaft, you need to unscrew the fastenings of the connecting rods in order from the center to the edges. When disassembling, attention should be paid to the condition of the liners - they should be evenly worn, without scratches. Inserts should be replaced with new ones. IN garage conditions the crankshaft journals can only be inspected for scoring and scratches; If there is wear, scoring or scratches, the crankshaft journals are machined on a special machine, and repair size liners are selected.

Video: an example of replacing crankshaft liners

When installing, it is important to monitor the position of the locks. These are special recesses that prevent the inserts from turning. The bushings must be lubricated with oil. It is necessary to track the correspondence of the holes in the liners and the oil channels.

After assembling the unit, it is important to tighten all the bolts with the tightening torque specified in the instruction manual. A properly assembled crankshaft rotates by hand without excessive resistance and beats.

Oil channels clogged

If you unscrew the sensor and turn the engine over with the starter, oil should come out from there. If oil does not flow, you need to check for oil, replace the oil pump with a known good one, and also blow oil channels compressed air. However, in advanced cases, clogged oil lines are almost impossible to clean.

Preliminary diagnostics of engine operation

When oil pressure problems occur, it is important to look for patterns that will tell you where the problem lies. The “oiler” is lit on a cold engine, or only on a warm one, does it go out when the engine is revved up. This data will help to eliminate malfunctions and reduce the repair budget for your car.

If the oil pressure light comes on at idle when the engine is well warmed up, and goes out as the engine speed increases, the crankshaft bearings are worn or the oil pump is not able to generate the correct pressure. This is provided that the oil is not too thin for this engine model and its level is in order.

You can eliminate these malfunctions only by removing the engine pan. It is better to replace the oil pump with a known good or new one, and you can also check the condition of the crankshaft liners and replace them with new ones. When replacing the liners, pay attention to the repair dimensions, they can be found in the instruction manual for your car.

If the light comes on when the engine speed increases, it means that the wrong oil filter is installed or the oil pickup screen is clogged. Wear of the crankshaft liners or camshaft beds is also not ruled out.

On a cold car, the light comes on in case of improperly selected oil, oil filter, oil pump breakdowns. With frequent short trips in winter, the oil deteriorates more strongly, as condensate and unburned fuel get into the oil. Physical Properties the oils change, it becomes thinner. When warmed up, condensate and gasoline evaporate and are removed through the crankcase ventilation system, so it is useful to warm up the car in winter.

Preliminary diagnostics of engine operation will help to identify patterns and correctly determine the causes of problems with oil pressure

What to do if the oil pressure light comes on

What to do if the light bulb still caught fire? You need to act like this:

By carrying out these operations in right order, it is possible to reduce the possible costs of both time and Money. If the problem lies in a broken or dirty sensor, you do not need to change the oil pump. The principle of diagnostics is from simple to complex and from cheap to expensive.

Video: elementary methods for diagnosing malfunctions of the lubrication system

As soon as the oil pressure light comes on with the engine running, turn off the engine. Oil starvation can lead to irreversible consequences, after which you have to change the engine. By checking in order and by elimination, you can easily understand the cause and eliminate the source of the problem. The car's lubrication system will serve for many years, if you change the oil on time, purchase only quality filters, as well as periodically use special flushing additives. Take good care of your car and it will answer you with reliability and long period work.

Car - technically complex mechanism with many units and parts, and, as you know, the more components, the higher the likelihood of breakage or violation normal operation. A range of tools are used to troubleshoot the machine, some of which are already built into the machine. vehicle. One of the parameters that is continuously monitored is the level of the lubricating fluid. This system is arranged simply: it has a sensor, connecting wire and an oil pressure light. If the pressure is low, the indicator is on (there is a malfunction or it is necessary to add oil), when it rises, it goes out. Do not ignore the indications of this system.

normal operation

What to do if the oil pressure light is on? In some cases, this is the norm. For example, when the ignition is on, but the car's engine is not running, while the lubricant supply pump does not work, therefore, the lines are empty. It is also considered normal if the oil pressure light is on for 5-20 seconds after starting a cold car, which is called "cold".

When the indicator warns of a malfunction

In what cases is it worth talking about a malfunction, and how to fix them? If the oil pressure light comes on while driving or when the engine is warm, this is a clear indication of a problem. In this case, it is necessary to stop and muffle the car as soon as possible. Then you should check the oil level with a special dipstick, if it is low, then you should see if there are obvious signs of leaks (the engine pan is broken or there are fresh streaks on the engine). If there is nothing of the kind, then it is worth adding the lubricant to the normal level and trying to start the engine again. If the indicator goes out, you can continue driving. Do not leave this case unattended - contact the service for a thorough diagnosis. What to do if the oil pressure light is on and topping up does not help. In such a situation, it is better not to start the engine, but tow the car to the place of repair. Unscrew the sensor and screw in the pressure gauge fitting instead, then start the engine. If the indicators of the device are normal (indicated in the technical passport of the car), then the malfunction is in the pressure control system itself. Either the sensor or the connecting wire is faulty. But in the case when the pressure gauge readings are lower than those declared for a given engine model, the problem should be sought in the lubrication system. This may be a faulty pump, and a clogged oil receiver, and wear of the crankshaft or camshaft. It is possible to determine the exact cause of the malfunction only after opening the car engine.

conclusions

So, if the oil pressure light is on, in no case should you ignore this alarm. No wonder all cars are equipped with this diagnostic system. Driving a car, in the engine of which the necessary intensity of lubricant circulation is not created and maintained, significantly reduces the life of the motor and accelerates the wear of all rubbing mechanisms. In general, such an engine can jam, which will lead to high repair costs, and possibly require a complete replacement, the cost of which can be up to a third of the price of the car (excluding the cost of transportation and the work of craftsmen). Thus, ignoring a seemingly insignificant indicator can lead to costly repairs. Also, do not disregard the burnout of this light bulb - it is better to replace it as soon as possible.

The performance of a number of systems and the car engine must be constantly monitored in order to notice the problem in time in the event of a malfunction. To control the functioning of such systems on dashboard information sensors and signal lamps are displayed on the front panel. The instrument cluster and the number of lamp sensors are different, but on all machines there is always an oil pressure lamp.
Previously, a pressure gauge was installed on the dashboard showing the pressure in the lubrication system. Currently, such sensors are used only for sports models, and on conventional machines only an oil pressure warning light is installed, which lights up if the pressure drops.

HOW OIL PRESSURE INDICATOR WORKS

Pressure control in the lubrication system is implemented simply. A sensor is installed in one of the channels of the lubrication system, which reacts to pressure changes. With a control lamp on the dashboard, this sensor is connected by an electrical circuit.

The principle of operation of this scheme is also simple. If there is no pressure, then the sensor closes the circuit, so when the ignition is turned on, the light comes on, indicating that the electrical circuit is working. After starting the engine, the oil pump pumps oil, so the pressure in the channels increases. When a certain value is reached, the sensor opens the circuit and the light goes out.

The sensor itself is set to the minimum pressure that is necessary for normal engine operation. On different models this indicator is different, on some motors the indicator is 0.3 - 0.4 kgf / cm2 at idle, at speeds of 2000-3000 and more 0.5-0.7 kgf / cm2.

When operating the machine, a problem arises when the pressure warning lamp lights up on a running engine, and its glow may be different. For some, the control indicator lights up at idle and the glow is dim, for others, the signal is bright and appears at medium and high revs. If the lamp lights up at idle, and fades when driving, then you need to look for the cause.

And under whatever conditions the warning system does not work, measures must be taken immediately. The lubrication system directly affects the performance of the motor and its malfunction will result in serious damage.

The first thing the driver should do when the lubrication pressure light comes on is to stop driving and stop the engine. The next step is to identify the cause of the alert.

WHY IS THE LAMP ON?

The oil pressure lamp lights up for the following reasons:

  1. disadvantage lubricant in the lubrication system.
  2. Break in the electrical circuit.
  3. Sensor malfunctions.
  4. Defective oil filter.
  5. Clogged oil pickup screen.
  6. Reducing valve sticking.
  7. Oil pump wear.

Because the reasons for triggering signal lamp- a lot, then we start the search for the cause with the simplest.

LACK OF OIL

Oil pump with oil receiver at the bottom of the sump

After stopping the car, check the oil level. This is not done right away. It is necessary to turn off the engine and wait for some time 5-7 minutes so that the grease can drain into the sump. If you check the level immediately, the readings will be incorrect (there will be less oil).

Lack of oil is one of the most common reasons for the warning light to come on, usually manifested by the lamp lighting up with a dim glow at idle.

WIRING AND SENSOR

Faulty oil pressure sensor (torn diaphragm)

An open circuit or loss of contact at the wiring connections can also cause the warning light to come on. And if the level check showed a normal amount of lubricant, then we check the power circuit. It is not difficult to do this - we start the engine, and if the lamp does not go out, disconnect the wire from the sensor. Such an action also opens the circuit and the control should go out. Then we apply the wire to the "mass" (any uncoated paint metal surface). With this procedure, we close the circuit bypassing the sensor and the lamp should light up. If it burns even after disconnecting the wiring from the sensor, there is a short to ground in the light bulb power wiring. To eliminate, it is located and isolated to find the place of the circuit.

Often the pressure lamp lights up due to a malfunction of the sensor itself. To check, you need a multimeter and a tire pump.

Diagnostics is performed as follows: we connect the sensor to a multimeter set to the resistance measurement mode (we connect one probe to the output, the second to the body of the part). In this case, the device should show a minimum resistance, since the circuit in it is closed inside. Then we connect a pump to the sensor (to the fitting with which the sensor is screwed into the engine) and, without turning off the multimeter, make a sharp pump. The pump will create pressure, which in a working element should break the circuit and the device will show infinite resistance. If pumping by the pump does not lead to changes in the sensor readings, it is faulty and needs to be replaced.

FILTER FAILURE AND OIL SENSOR SCREEN Clogged

The problem with the oil pressure lamp often occurs after scheduled replacement lubricant and filter element. In this case, the oil filter is most often to blame.
The filter should retain some of the oil after the engine stops. This allows the pump to build up pressure almost instantly when the engine is started. But if the filter element is defective, then the grease from it drains into the sump after the engine stops. Therefore, when the motor is started, the pressure light will light up, because the pump needs time to pump lubricant into the channels. The problem is solved by replacing the filter element.

Partially clogged oil pickup screen

When the engine is running, the oil washes the surfaces and washes away the wear products. These products settle on various surfaces, including the oil intake grid. The grid gets clogged and throughput oil pan falls. As a result, the pump cannot supply required amount oil, which causes the light to come on. To fix the problem, you will have to remove the pallet and clean the grid.

VALVE AND PUMP

The pressure reducing valve is used to prevent the pump from building up excessive pressure. When a certain pressure value is reached, this valve opens slightly, and part of the oil is discharged into the sump. But if this valve sticks in the half-open position, then some of the lubricant constantly drains, so the pump cannot pump the required amount of lubricant. The problem with the valve is eliminated by replacing or cleaning.

Due to the development on the shaft of the oil pump, play may appear

The pump is the last element that can cause the control to catch fire. Although the car uses gear-type pumps that differ great resource, but gradually it wears out and its performance drops because of which the desired pressure is not reached. Faulty pump to be replaced.

Note that the movement to the place of repair "on its own" can only be carried out if there is an exact certainty that the problem lies in the sensor or wiring. In other cases, the car cannot be operated and for transportation it will be necessary to call a tow truck or tow it.

Perhaps the most serious signal the driver is informed about engine problems by the oil pressure lamp, regardless of whether it lights up while driving or at idle. A burning "Check" can be ignored, but a red oiler on the instrument panel cannot be ignored.

Hot pressure sensor light blinking

It happens that the light does not burn constantly, but blinks. If the engine consumes excessive oil, its level may drop below the critical level. In this case, on bumps and slopes, the oil intake will grab air. This problem is characterized by the fact that it manifests itself only during movement. To diagnose a problem, you need to check the oil level and add it to the required mark.

More often than others, this difficulty may be encountered sports cars and those that are operated in mountainous areas.

Advice. Experienced drivers, on roads rich in steep long climbs, fill in one and a half levels of oil to avoid a dry oil receiver. And on flat areas, bring it back to a normal level, draining excess oil until next time.

If the indicator blinks when the engine is running, when the car is stationary, the cause of the malfunction is in the sensor itself. Most likely, it gives the wrong signal, and can let oil through, both to the street and to the contacts inside itself (responsible for turning on control lamp). In this case, when external examination you can see streaks and drops of oil on the sensor housing.

It happens that the blinking and burning of the pointer appears under certain conditions and modes of operation

At idle

Drivers often notice the described problem when the engine is warm, especially in hot weather.

The idle speed of the engine is about 900 per minute. In this case, the oil pump must generate a pressure of up to 2 bar. This applies to both classics and VAZs of the tenth family, as well as Kalina, Priora and others (the principle of operation of the lubrication system, and the pressure value changes slightly).

When the oil is heated, it becomes more liquid, and idling can no longer provide the required pressure indicator. When it falls in the system, a light comes on (some cars also have a dial gauge showing the pressure). However, if you add speed, the light goes out, and the arrow rises.

Video educational program about the main causes of the oil pressure light on

On vehicles with hydraulic lash adjusters valve mechanism, low pressure can also be detected by a characteristic clicking noise under the head cover. And if you increase the speed, the pressure increases and the knock stops. After some time (less than a minute of idling), the sound appears again.

With such a malfunction, the car will be able to drive for some time, but you should not delay making an accurate “diagnosis”. long oil starvation ICE, one day it will result in a serious repair.

When the engine is warm

The normal pressure indicator for Lada at operating temperature and turns:

  • About 5400 / minute, is 4.5 - 6 bar;
  • 3000/minute - about 4 bar.

Drivers using mineral oil are well aware of the pressure drop on a warm engine. Immediately after starting, everything is in order, but if the engine warms up longer, the light starts to glow, and goes out only when the speed is added.

Peculiarity mineral oil in that it reacts more intensively to temperature than synthetics and semi-synthetics. When heated - cooled, it changes viscosity more strongly. In this case, you can try using a semi-synthetic or synthetic oil.

Important. Do not use an oil type prohibited by the manufacturer for a particular engine.

On a cold

If hot liquid oil cannot provide sufficient pressure due to leaks through the mating parts of the rubbing parts, then at freezing temperatures another problem is that the oil is too thick if it does not match weather conditions. It cannot quickly fill all the channels and get to the sensor. On the way to thick oil many obstacles:

  • Mesh oil intake;
  • Filter;
  • Long narrow channels, etc.

Knowing this, it is important to select the viscosity of the oil according to the season, and periodically clean the system with special flushing agents.

Unsuitable thickened oil increases the load on the oil pump drive. And if the pressure reducing valve (relieving excess pressure) does not work in time, the drive may be damaged, “cut off”. In this case, the control lamp does not go out at all, even if you put the car in warm garage or to warm up the oil in another way. With such a breakdown, the operation of the car is strictly prohibited, the failed part must be replaced.

If the indicator lights up immediately after the ignition is turned on, and lights up for a while after starting the engine, this is normal, but not more than 5 seconds. As the parts wear, the gaps increase and so does the burning time. This is a signal that it will soon be necessary to overhaul the internal combustion engine.

Some tips on what you can do yourself:

  • Check that the sensor is working, for example, by replacing it with a known good one. Alternatively, you can screw in its place a mechanical control sensor co pointer. Please note that the engines of Lada Kalina cars with eight and 16 valve modifications were equipped with different sensors!
  • Be sure to change the filter and oil. old filter clogged and obstructs the flow of oil. Even a new low-quality consumable can cause the light to blink.

  • When changing the oil, it's time to remove the engine pan and check the condition of the oil receiver. From practice: on the VAZ 2114, the receiving mesh clogged up, after washing it hot water, the pressure in the system is restored. Sealant particles or shavings may also enter the crankcase. Note! Red or blue heat resistant sealant is not too good choice for mounting the sump and other parts in contact with oil that are not subject to strong heat. It does not provide sufficient traction and can get into the oil receiver. It is also important not to apply too much sealant and wait for the time set according to the instructions.
  • The sump itself may be damaged and interfere with normal oil intake. A dent may appear due to an impact during a trip.
  • In older engines, as they wear out and the gaps between the rubbing elements increase, it is allowed to use a thicker oil in summer period(this measure is temporary, designed to reduce the wear of parts until the owner has the opportunity to carry out a major overhaul). Naturally, this is contraindicated in winter.
  • Check the relief valve as well. Foreign particles can get into it, or the spring weakens. In both cases, the valve remains ajar and begins to drive oil through itself and dump it into the crankcase without supplying it to the engine. The indicator in this case will burn under any conditions, regardless of temperature and speed.
  • If sharp drop pressure happened on the highway while driving, you need to stop immediately. First of all, you need to look from below - if the engine sump is broken. Then check for oil leaks under the filter, maybe it just wasn’t fully tightened during a recent maintenance. After 2 - 3 minutes after stopping the engine, check the level on the dipstick (it is pulled out, wiped, inserted dry and pulled out again to measure the level). With a normal indicator, check electrical circuit from the oil sensor (pads in the wires, wire integrity)

Please note that the pressure indicator engine lubricants- is not an oil level indicator (the driver himself is responsible for monitoring the indicator, which should be between the marks or closer to the top). The light comes on only in the most extreme cases, when the engine needs urgent intervention.

These are the most common reasons for the oil pressure indicator lamp to come on (on, flashing, does not go out for a long time) during start-up and idling.
