The manufacturer claims that the Lada Granta liftback engine has become much more economical. In fact, this car was used from the VAZ-2108. The modification consists in equipping the engine with lightweight pistons, the purpose of which is to give additional power with reduced gas mileage. A test drive showed that such an innovation is more of a drawback of the engine than its advantage. This structure of the piston system makes the valves as vulnerable as possible.

All the shortcomings inherent in the Lada Granta with a manual transmission are present in full in a car with an automatic transmission. The problem with the timing belt is still unresolved. The door lock mechanisms are made in an economical version, which leads to constant extraneous noise when using the doors.

But it is worth noting that this model of Lada Grants is equipped with a 16-valve engine from Priora, which is characterized by a balanced ratio of torque to engine displacement. Automation has a modernized thermostatic unit that makes cooling more efficient. The instrument panel is made much better, which is expressed in the complete absence of extraneous sounds from its side.

Until recently, an automatic transmission was not used at all on VAZ cars, so it was decided to buy this unit from the Japanese company Jatco. At one time, this company supplied such components for Mazda. A huge disadvantage of this unit is the complete impossibility of its repair. Changes in appearance

A big test drive Grants Liftback was simply necessary to start with an initial inspection of the car. And here it is clearly seen with what attention to detail and the desire to correct the mistakes of previous models, the designers reacted to the development of Grants.

The rear part of the car, which has undergone the greatest number of modifications, requires special attention. Suspension balance provides a comfortable ride even in off-road conditions, where a less stiff suspension would inevitably cause the car to sway from side to side when driving at speed. Irregularities on poor-quality and broken roads are also almost not felt, which is confirmed by repeated tests of the car.

Car practicality

The new test drives of the Lada Grants Liftback showed how great the engineers' emphasis was on utility in terms of utility. Behind the trunk cover panel is a recess in which the spare wheel is located.

The trip computer display shows data useful for a long period of operation, for example, the temperature of the engine. Grant in the back of a liftback immediately after the appearance caused a mixed opinion. Someone did not like her design, someone vice versa. Indeed, the rear of the car has changed significantly. Compared to Grant's sedan, the liftback looks a little more modern and fresher. In addition, in this body the car does not look as bulky as a sedan.


To be honest, in the modern line of AVTOVAZ, this liftback looks very good. Unlike the sedan, many minor "sores" and childhood illnesses were improved on the liftback. For example, doors open and close with much less effort and noise thanks to the new door closers. Hooks for attaching packages appeared in the trunk, plastic cables for attaching the rear shelf were replaced by elastic laces that do not burst in the cold, etc. The combination of these changes creates a more pleasant perception of the car.


The trunk volume of the Lada Granta liftback is a good 440 liters, and with the rear seats folded down it reaches 760 liters. Here the main plus of the liftback body is manifested - the large tailgate folds completely and provides ease of loading and unloading.


The interior design is exactly the same as on the sedan - everything is simple and without frills, the usual interior of a budget car. Naturally, the interior also depends on the configuration - the base will not have a large LCD monitor and other "buns".



Under the hood of the test car, a 106-horsepower 16-valve engine is installed, paired with an AMT robot. This abbreviation hides an ordinary robotic gearbox, which is successfully used by many manufacturers. This is a simple and cheap solution, popular in the budget segment. "Robots" with one clutch were installed on some models of Peugeot, Renault, Toyota, etc.

In the cabin, instead of the gearshift lever, the AMT selector is installed, and there is also no clutch pedal. The selector has neutral, forward, reverse, and manual modes. Unlike a traditional automatic machine, there is no “Parking” mode in the AMT, the car in the parking lot must be left in neutral or turned off with the gear engaged. This is one of the disadvantages of Lada Granta with AMT - in winter, after washing the car, in order to avoid freezing of the pads, you will have to leave it in gear and without a handbrake, which will not allow you to use the engine auto start.


Another disadvantage of AMT on Lada Granta is maneuvering in the parking lot. The fact is that when the brake is released, the car does not start to drive, as in a classic automatic machine. In order for the car to move, you need to add speed with the gas pedal. Sometimes it causes jolts when maneuvering forward and reverse in a parking lot - you need to get used to it.

Oh yes, without warming up, the robot will not go either - when you try to start in the winter immediately after starting the engine, the car does not react in any way to turning on the driving mode and pressing the gas. But a couple of minutes after the launch - already please.

On the go, Lada Granta behaves like a typical car with a robot. Here you won’t be able to just drive and not think about anything, as in a car with a conventional machine gun. You need to understand that a robot is the same mechanics that is simply switched not by a person, but by electronics. Therefore, between switching there is a noticeable pause, and sometimes even a noticeable "peck". However, there is a trick here too. After a while, you begin to intuitively feel the moment of gear shifting. If you release the gas pedal before this, the switching occurs very smoothly and quickly. Much better than many manual drivers switch.

Another nice feature - if you press the gas to the floor, until the robot in each gear allows the motor to spin up almost to the red zone of the tachometer, and then quickly switches to the next speed. There is also a manual shift mode: if you need to accelerate sharply, you can manually downshift. This is useful, for example, when overtaking on the highway.

In general, Grants with a robot has both minuses and pluses. But for the price, the robot will cost the buyer much cheaper than a classic machine. In principle, a pretty good alternative for those who are tired of working with the clutch and gearshift lever, but at the same time do not want to overpay for a machine.

The top 106-horsepower engine and the branded "robot" can work surprisingly smoothly (if you do not practice driving in a sporty style - with sharp starts and accelerations). The box changes gears smoothly and without delay, and at the first opportunity seeks to switch "up" to save fuel. What about extreme driving? In principle, it’s also very good: the “robot” will quickly throw off one, two or even three gears, the dynamics will improve markedly (albeit in proportion to the increase in fuel consumption), and gaps in the supply of traction and jerks when switching will become more noticeable.

But there is a way to make the ride dynamic and comfortable in equal measure. Its name is manual transmission mode. Swing the box selector to the left, after which you can change gears yourself. I tried it and I liked it. You get both a smooth ride and better dynamic control.

In terms of handling, the Togliatti liftback does not present unpleasant surprises - the car stands confidently on a high-speed straight, obeys the steering wheel well and does not allow strong rolls on turns. However, you need to understand that the steering is set here with an emphasis on slight understeer, and a torsion beam is used in the rear suspension design, which allows you to feel predictable and unambiguous steering responses. The braking system is also quite effective, but, as they say, without sports tenacity (however, not very relevant in a civilian passenger car). ABS is in the "base", but the stabilization system is only for the top version. In general, one should not expect sports car reactions from such a Granta, although in general the character of the liftback is quite provocative.

And how are things going with the smoothness of the ride? After all, the suspension here, let me remind you, is set up more rigidly than in the “junior” trim levels. For several days of operating the car in the capital and the Moscow region, I traveled on a variety of roads and never complained of discomfort. The chassis is tuned tightly, but at the same time it copes well with pits and bumps of various calibers. Noise isolation is also at its best: additional insulating mats and plugs for technological holes are allocated to the luxury version. Pirelli Cinturato P1 tires with dimensions 185/55 R15 also contribute to driving comfort - another sign of top-end cars.

Compete on an equal footing

The price of our test car is 571,200 rubles, which means that it has come close to localized foreign cars, “classmates”. So, the Renault Sandero hatchback with a 1.6-liter 102-horsepower engine and a 4-band "automatic" is offered for 629,990 rubles, and for the same car with a 1.6-liter engine with 82 hp. and "robot" ask 579,990 rubles. The Czech liftback Skoda Rapid, again with a 1.6-liter engine and a 6-band "automatic" will cost more - 736,000 rubles. Another alternative is the Datsun mi-Do hatchback with a 4-band "automatic", which is sold in the range from 542,000 to 596,000 rubles.

However, AvtoVAZ also provided an impressive price range for the LADA Granta liftback. In particular, dealers of the Togliatti company today offer the Standard package for 404,200 rubles, and the Norma, depending on the engine and transmission, can be purchased at a price of 430,600 to 521,400 rubles. But, in our opinion, it still makes sense to pay extra for the options offered in the top configuration. In this case, in addition to a powerful engine, special suspension settings, an extended noise isolation package and 15-inch tires of a premium European brand, you get rear parking sensors, cruise control, ESC stability control systems and hill start assist, rain and light sensors, a multimedia system with navigation and Bluetooth speakerphone. This "gentleman's kit" makes the Granta liftback much more competitive in the market.
