The engine oil and oil filter are changed at every vehicle maintenance.

Below is a list of what will be required to complete this job. All this must be prepared in advance.

A detailed photo report on an independent oil change in a Chevrolet Cobalt

Engine oil. For replacement, use only the oil recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

Oil filter.

Chevrolet Cobalt Oil Filter

A container into which the used oil will be drained. An old plastic oil can is ideal for this purpose if you cut a wide hole in it. It is desirable that it be clean. This will allow visual diagnostics of the drained oil in order to assess the technical condition of the engine.

Rubberized gloves . When changing oil, it is not possible to avoid getting it on your hands, so gloves are indispensable. They should provide insulation to the skin from the harmful effects of used oil.

Wrenches for removing the crankcase protection (if installed).

Funnel . The funnel can be metal or plastic, the main thing is clean.

When changing the engine oil, ensure that the vehicle is level. An inspection ditch is the ideal place to perform an oil change. If not, you will have to hang the car in compliance with all safety precautions.

1. Open the oil filler cap.

2. We substitute a container under the drain hole.

3. We clean the surface around the cork and unscrew the cork, trying at the last stage not to drop it into a container with oil. If the engine is hot, be careful, there is a risk of burning yourself with oil.

Drain plug location

4. While the oil is draining, let's take care of the filter. Please note that when unscrewing, oil will also flow out of the filter.

5. Thoroughly clean all surfaces that got oil when draining and install new parts.

Before installing a new filter, lubricate its O-ring and threads. At the same time, inspect these important parts of the filter - the o-ring should be even, without damage. The same applies to carving. The thread must be free of burrs. It is very rare, but it still happens that chips remain on it (the consequences of turning). Chips from the thread must be removed, otherwise there may be problems when screwing on the filter. Tighten the oil filter only by hand, without using any tool.

6. Install the drain plug in place, after replacing the sealing ring. Tighten the plug to the prescribed torque (14 Nm).

7. Fill in engine oil using a funnel. Be careful when filling oil. To avoid overfilling, try to fill at first no more than the volume that was drained. Then add oil in small portions, periodically checking the level with a dipstick. As a result, the level should be just below the MAX mark.

8. Install the removed parts and start the engine. The emergency oil pressure warning lamp may go out after a short delay, this is normal. If it does not go out within five seconds after starting the engine, you must immediately turn off the engine and determine the cause of the low pressure. If everything is fine, let the engine run for 3-5 minutes, turn it off and after another 5-7 minutes we check the oil level. The level should be slightly above the middle between the MIN and MAX marks. If the level is above the MAX mark, some of the oil must be drained.

9. We inspect the installation sites of the filter and drain plug for leakage. If everything is normal, the oil change job can be considered completed.

Some packages of motor oils come with stickers that record the mileage and date of oil change. You can place it either under the hood or in the car.

Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car produced from 2004 to 2010 in the USA. The difference between the 1st generation and the 2nd, produced since 2011, is unusual. They are completely different and have nothing in common.

The first generation Cobalt was produced in sedan and coupe body styles on the GM Delta platform. Production of the 1 Series Cobalt stopped in 2010, being replaced by another Chevrolet Cruze model (based on the Delta 2 platform).

The second generation of the car was resurrected in 2011 as a budget car based on the GM Gamma platform, taking its place between Aveo and Cruze in size. Cobalt's main competitor was Renault Logan.

What kind of oil to pour and how much?

The manufacturer recommends using GM Dexos2 with a viscosity of 5W-30 for this engine model. It is better to change the oil every 10,000 km. Using only the original company is not a mandatory item, you can buy any normal market product.

  • Idemitsu Zepro 5W30;
  • Mobil Super™ 3000 XE 5W-30;
  • Eneos 5W30;
  • BP Visco 5w40;

The amount of oil required for a 1.5 (L2C) engine is 3.75 liters.

To select oil by viscosity, you can use the table below. Be guided by the temperature of the geographical latitude to which you are located. If a cold climate prevails in your region, choose "winter", etc.

Instruction

  1. We warm the engine up to 50-60 degrees. Warm oil has better fluidity and will drain better from the engine during a complete change. Our task is to remove to the maximum the old dirty and used liquid that no longer has useful properties from the engine and fill in a new one. If a lot of old dirty oil remains in the crankcase, it will be swept away with new and worsen its useful properties. Warm up the engine for 5-7 minutes before work, this wakes up enough.
  2. For easy access to the drain plug (and in some models the oil filter is also attached from the bottom) and the bottom of the car as a whole, you need to jack it up or drive into the inspection hole (the best option). Also, in some models, "protection" of the engine crankcase can be installed.
  3. We open air access to the crankcase by unscrewing the filler cap and dipstick.
  4. Substitutes a large container (equal to the amount of oil being poured).
  5. We unscrew the drain plug with a key. Sometimes the drain plug is made like a conventional “bolt” with an open-end wrench, and sometimes it can be unscrewed with a four or hexagon. Do not forget to wear protective gloves, the oil will most likely wake up warm, but you need to be careful.
  6. We wait about 10-15 minutes until the mining drains into a basin or a cut plastic canister.
  7. An optional item but very effective! Flushing the engine with a special fluid is not included in the maintenance schedule and is not mandatory - but. A little confused, you will much better flush the engine from the old, black oil. At the same time, flushing with the old oil filter is carried out for 5-10 minutes. You will be surprised what black oil will pour out with this liquid. It is very easy to use this liquid. A detailed description must be included on the flush fluid label.
  8. Change the sedum filter. In some models, it is not the filter itself and the filter element that changes (usually yellow). Impregnation of the filter with new oil before installation is a mandatory procedure. Lack of oil in a new filter before starting the engine can cause oil starvation, which in turn can cause filter deformation. In general, this is not a good thing. Remember to also lubricate the rubber o-ring before installation.
  9. Fill in new oil. After making sure that the drain plug is screwed on and a new oil filter is installed, we can start filling in new oil, guided by the dipstick. The level must be between the minimum and maximum marks. Also, you need to remember that after the first start of the engine, a little oil will go away and the level will drop.
  10. In the future, when the engine is running, the oil level will probably change, be careful the first few days of operation. Recheck the oil level on the dipstick after the first start.

Do not think that zhor oil in a car engine is evidence of its malfunction. Zhor oil is allowed by any automobile manufacturer, but there are certain consumption limits. For example, on a Chevrolet Cobalt, oil consumption up to half a liter per one thousand kilometers is considered normal. Not much, but that's okay.

I was aware of all this, so initially I did not attach much importance to the fact that during the check, the oil level on the dipstick decreased. However, time passes and the prescribed 500 grams of oil consumption has already occurred, and its level continues to decline. Now this is already an abnormal phenomenon and it is necessary to fight with it, but how? First you need to determine what is the cause of oil consumption.

One option is an oil leak. Inspect the engine compartment from above and below. It is possible that oil is leaking through the crankshaft seals or the cylinder head gasket has pierced, and it cannot be ruled out that the liquid is escaping through the sealing gasket on the filter or through the oil pressure sensor.

So, what would I do if I never found a leak? The reason for the increased consumption of engine oil may be a mismatch of this brand with the specified quality or viscosity.

If we read the Chevrolet Cobalt instruction manual, we will see that the manufacturer recommends filling the engine with special branded GM Dexos SAE 5W-30 oil, or its analogues - API SM, SN.

But if everything is in order with the oil, then you have contamination in the crankcase ventilation, or, if the car is no longer new, coking has occurred in the cylinder walls. Then you have to disassemble the engine and fix the problem.

Chevrolet Cobalt cars have not gained huge popularity in the Russian market, like the Lacetti or Aveo models. But there are still a lot of such cars. Chevrolet Cobalt manufactured by General Motors belongs to the category of inexpensive budget-class sedans that are designed to compete with Renault Logan. At the same time, the car is equipped with good engines. It is a pity that only 1.5-liter versions with 16 valves and 105 horsepower are available in Russia.

It is important to choose the right oil for your Chevrolet Cobalt engine.

A good resource, together with a fairly solid dynamics, given the power, make the Cobalt an excellent workhorse that does not require large financial investments and allows you to do maintenance on your own. One of the highlights in operation is the timely replacement and selection of the appropriate oil for Chevrolet Cobalt 2013 - 2015 or earlier models.

Since you will need a new engine oil that meets the requirements of the Chevrolet Cobalt for replacement, you will have to carefully study the characteristics and options on the market for engine fluids. It is important to note that the oils used for cars from 2013 - 2015 differ from those that are poured into the first generation Cobalt from 2004 - 2010. The first generation "Cobalt" is a compact car that was produced and sold in North America. Therefore, it is problematic to find such models in Russia. In Russia, the updated 2nd generation Cobalt, which no longer had anything in common with its predecessor, despite the similar name, was introduced in 2012. Active sales began in 2013.

The story did not last so long, since already in 2016 the brand was transferred to Ravon. Now it is "Ravon R4", although in fact this is the same "Cobalt" of the second generation. It would be logical to consider the current oils for cars manufactured in 2012 - 2015 and determine this budget car. The best solution would be to buy original oil for the Chevrolet Cobalt. Dexos 2 5W30 oil manufactured by General Motors is poured into the car engine from the factory. The problem is that this oil is quite expensive. Therefore, the owners are thinking about what type of lubricant is best to fill in the Chevrolet Cobalt. In terms of viscosity, compositions with the following characteristics are suitable as multigrade oils:

  • 10W40;
  • 10W50;
  • 15W40;
  • 5W40;
  • 15W50.

If you need a purely winter composition, then the viscosity for Cobalt will suit:

  • 0W40;
  • 5W40;
  • 5W50;
  • 0W50.

From summer lubricants use:

  • 20W40;
  • 25W40;
  • 25W50.

For vehicles manufactured in 2012, API lubricants are recommended to take SM, and for models from 2013 and younger, SN is used. It is better to use synthetic oils, although some semi-synthetic motor fluids are also capable of ensuring the efficient and high-quality operation of the Chevrolet Cobalt power unit. There are several manufacturers who can offer formulations with the desired characteristics. They have proven themselves well, so it is better to use them as an alternative to the original engine oil for the Chevrolet Cobalt:

  • shell;
  • Castrol;
  • Mobil;
  • xado;
  • GT oil;
  • Valvoline;
  • Lukoil.

If you managed to choose the right engine oil, you have already done half the work. It remains only to drain the mining, change the filter and into the crankcase.

Level and condition

The Cobalt engine is designed for the fact that an oil change on it should be carried out approximately every 10 thousand kilometers. But these figures are indicated in the official manual, taking into account standard operating conditions. But you must understand that the realities of Russian roads and our climate do not allow such intervals between car maintenance. Therefore, the real replacement period is 5 - 6 thousand kilometers or 1 time per year. Take into account the indicator that comes first.

Periodically, the car owner is obliged to use a dipstick, check the current state of the motor lubricant and how much of it is in the engine. You can really evaluate the composition by completely draining it from the crankcase. But there is also an easier method.

At first . For this you need:

  • open the hood;
  • find a probe;
  • pull it out;
  • wipe with a clean cloth;
  • put in place;
  • pull out again;
  • look at the trace of the oil film in relation to the "Min" and "Max" marks.

It is necessary that during the operation of the car the probe shows the average value between the two marks. If the level gradually approaches the minimum value, be sure to add a little fresh oil. The closer the period for replacing motor lubricant, the higher the likelihood that the liquid loses its physical and chemical properties, the composition begins to become cloudy or dark, and chip particles appear in it.

To assess the current condition of the oil in the engine, you can use a simple method. It does not require all the oil to be drained from the Chevrolet Cobalt.

  1. It is better to preheat the engine a little so that a possible sediment rises.
  2. Remove the dipstick and take white paper or a napkin.
  3. Drop a few drops of oil from the dipstick. Nearby, you can make a few drops of fresh oil that you used.
  4. If you see a difference in color, transparency, or a sediment is clearly visible in the composition of the engine fluid, this indicates a strong wear of the lubricant that needs to be replaced.

It is necessary to pay attention to situations when the oil takes on an uncharacteristic appearance after a short time since the last change. If you did not do the work, this may indicate several facts:

  • the previous replacement was carried out poorly;
  • the masters poured initially bad oil;
  • there are problems in the engine due to which the oil begins to quickly lose its properties;
  • forgot to change the oil filter in parallel with the replacement of the oil itself;
  • a large amount of old mining remained in the engine, which mixed with fresh fluid.

In the best case, it will normalize the condition of the engine. But if there is a suspicion of a malfunction of the motor itself, it is better to carry out diagnostics at a proven and professional car service.

Instructions for self-replacement

It is better to work if there is a viewing hole in the garage or a lift. Not every ordinary motorist can boast of having a special lift, so basically you have to work using a pit. For work, you will need to collect the necessary materials and tools near you. This list includes:

  • fresh motor oil with suitable physical and chemical characteristics;
  • new filter;
  • rubber seal for drain plug;
  • empty containers with a volume of 5 - 6 liters for draining mining;
  • carrying lamp;
  • ring spanners (at least 13 and 15 sizes);
  • rags;
  • overalls.

Start work on a preheated engine. If the car has been in the garage for a long time, then the oil will become very thick. When drained, it will begin to come out very slowly, plus you will not be able to get rid of the maximum amount of used grease. Let's get to work.

  1. Warm up the engine, then open the hood and unscrew the filler cap. As long as you don't need to add anything.
  2. We pass under the bottom of your Chevrolet Cobalt. Under the engine is a protective panel or just motor protection. It must be dismantled to get to the drain hole and filter.
  3. To dismantle the protection with your own hands, you will need to unscrew 4 fixing bolts, which are located in the front and rear. 2 bolts hold the protection on the lower cross member of the radiator, and the second two you will find on the subframe on the opposite side of the radiator. We remove the protection and remove it temporarily to the side.
  4. After dismantling under the panel, clean the pan near the waste oil drain plug. This will prevent debris and dirt from getting into the new grease. To remove the drain plug, you will need a 15 spanner wrench.
  5. Before you start twisting the plug, do not forget to substitute an empty container under it, where the old motor fluid from the crankcase will merge. Be careful as the grease is hot and you may get severe burns.
  6. Turn the plug a little with a ring wrench until you can turn it by hand. Open to the end and drain the mining. The volume of the drained liquid will be approximately 4 liters, so take the container with a margin, for 5 - 6 liters, so that the lubricant does not leak over the edges.
  7. When the oil has stopped flowing out under high pressure, place a container with working out under the crankcase so that the remaining lubricant gradually drips there.
  8. While the liquid is draining, take care of the oil filter. It is better to dismantle it with a special filter puller, since it is often difficult to deal with it with hands or improvised tools. Rotate counterclockwise. Also place an empty container under the filter, as oil residues will drain from it.
  9. Clean the filter seat. Apply some fresh motor grease to the new filter assembly to lubricate the gasket. You can fill the filter itself about 1/3 with oil. It is better to screw it in manually, but so that the seal fits snugly against the surface. Otherwise, leaks will occur.
  10. If 15 minutes have already passed since you moved away from the drain hole to the filter, you can remove the waste container and return the plug to its place. But first, check the condition of the seal. If the o-ring on the plug is worn out, a new one must be put in its place.
  11. Some people forget to buy this ring, but there is a way out of the situation so as not to run back to the store. To do this, take any sealant that has an oil-resistant property. It is a good substitute for rubber gaskets. If no ring or sealant is used, fresh oil will leak out of the plug.
  12. Tighten the plug tightly and return to the engine compartment. There you removed the oil filler plug at the first stage. Start pouring fresh grease through the neck. The engine, which is installed on the Chevrolet Cobalt for the Russian market, holds about 3.75 liters of oil. But the actual amount may turn out to be slightly less, since it will not be possible to 100% remove all the remnants of the old liquid.
  13. First fill with approximately 3.5 liters, close the cap and start the engine at idle. Let it work for a couple of minutes.
  14. Turn off the motor, wait a few minutes. During this time, the oil will drain back into the crankcase and the oil pressure warning light will go out on the instrument panel.
  15. Check the oil level with a dipstick. It should be between the "Min" and "Max" marks. If the level is lower than required, add a little more. All at once 3.75 liters. it is not worth filling in, because if there is an excess of liquid in the crankcase, it will have to be drained. And this will require re-unscrewing the cork, putting the container under the hole, etc.
  16. If the level is normal, check the condition of the drain hole and filter. If they are loose, oil can seep through them. If there is a leak, tighten the connections and replace the engine protection.

It cannot be said that an independent Chevrolet Cobalt car raises many questions or difficulties. The procedure is standard and does not require special skills. Over the next few days of driving the car with new engine oil, keep an eye on the oil level and check for signs of leakage anywhere. If the car behaves well, this indicates a successful procedure. The main thing in the issue of maintenance is the choice of suitable and high-quality consumables. The better the service, the more reliable and longer the car will be able to work.

Thank you all for your attention and good luck on the road!

Production of the Chevrolet Cobalt originated in North America. The first series was launched in 2004 and extended its existence until 2010. Everything produced after this time is the second series. Cobalt was produced with coupe and sedan bodies. Its production was established in the state of Ohio. There is a classification by the Environmental Protection Agency, according to which cars are distributed according to the usable volume of the passenger compartment. Chevrolet Cobalt of the first generation belonged to the compact form, the second - to the subcompact.

  • car weight: coupe - 1216 kg, sedan - 1246 kg;
  • engine power - 116 kW;
  • fuel consumption rate. Automatic transmission: in the city - 9.8 liters per 100 km, on the highway - 6.9 liters per 100 km; manual transmission: in the city - 9.0 liters per 100 km, on the highway - 6.4 liters per 100 km;
  • type of front car suspension - MacPherson strut, the main component of which is a shock absorber strut. The rear suspension is semi-independent torsion bar. It is based on a forward-curved pipe, at the ends of which are wheels with bearings. The design is fixed to the body with a ball joint.

The right choice of engine oil

Car manufacturers have developed instructions on the timing and quality of oil for the Chevrolet Cobalt. Instructions are also provided on the required oil viscosity, which depends on the season - winter and summer. An oil change is recommended once a year or every 15 thousand kilometers. With multiple short trips and impressive loads - once every six months or every 7.5 thousand kilometers.

What is the best oil for Chevrolet Cobalt to use, TOTAL consultants will explain. Everything will depend on what kind of oil was poured in the previous period of operation. Switching from mineral oil to synthetic oil can cause some problems. Mineral water, used for a long time, forms a precipitate that protects possible cracks. Therefore, in this case, it is recommended to continue to use mineral oil. Synthetics are more suitable for new cars.

Oil for Chevrolet Cobalt: synthetic or semi-synthetic? The eternal question that worries and worries motorists. One of the synthetic motor oils Total Quartz Ineo MC3 5W-30 guarantees the protection of used parts at a wide range of temperatures, provides cold start of the engine, reduces the frequency of oil changes, resists contamination and keeps the engine clean.

You can also use Total Transmission Syn FE 75W-90 gear oil. Its advantage is the protection of the gearbox from wear and corrosion, the extension of the service life and the increase in the durability of the engine under heavy continuous loads.

Cobalt GM 10W40 semi-synthetic oil has found extensive use. It is mineral oil with additives. The indicators of semi-synthetic oils are average: the quality is higher than that of mineral oil, at a price - cheaper than synthetic. It is better to trust the oil change to professionals, as any inept intervention can damage the quality of the engine.

The price of this vehicle corresponds to its excellent quality. However, the question: - will be answered by an expert in the field of sales of automotive equipment.
