Daihatsu Copen Ownership Experience: Evil Good Pokémon. The cost of a small urban convertible from Japan

22.09.2019

The Daihatsu Copen sports car has earned a lot of positive reviews in a short period of its existence.

One look at a photo or video of the presented vehicle model is enough to fall in love with it.

The retractable roof, spacious interior, ergonomic design and excellent performance make the Copen a great alternative to many similarly priced European sports roadsters.

With more detailed information about the car, you can find out about the results of the passed test drives below.

Overview, description of the car Daihatsu Copen

This is a two-seat car, which is equipped with two doors and a folding roof.

The first representatives of this model were released in 2003 and immediately appeared on the Japanese market.

At that time, they had a high cost, which made the car almost inaccessible to the middle social class.

Then the car began to improve, supplemented by various functions and options. Around 2007 Daihatsu Kopen made his debut in Russia. It was paid attention mainly to young people who prefer sports models.

Now the car is quite rare on Russian roads, even despite the real Japanese quality, proven over the years.

The car has a retro style. When the roof is automatically retracted, the car becomes like a subcompact convertible.

Although inside it has a powerful engine and modern filling, made using innovative technologies in compliance with all quality requirements, the car turned out to be comfortable and safe, the basic package includes airbags to protect the driver and passengers.

Daihatsu Copen looks unusual on the road - its smooth, but maneuverable movements make other car owners take a closer look at the car. And if you squeeze out full speed, the car will show its power and sporty dynamics.

While driving, the engine makes almost no noise, and the factory wheels have excellent traction.

Approximate prices for Daihatsu Copen.

In Russia, the latest modification of Daihatsu Kopen is presented in the configuration indicated above.

The cost of such a car ranges from 700 to 800 thousand rubles. The price depends on the place of purchase of this machine.

Many people know about a company like Daihatsu. The basis of its production is small cars oriented to operation in urban conditions. Although there are larger cars.

Not so long ago, a line consisting of minivans, crossovers and hatchbacks was diluted with a very interesting copy called Daihatsu Copen. The car is interesting in that it is a small city convertible. In fairness, we add that the manufacturer himself calls the resulting coupe-cabriolet body. But we won't focus too much on that.

In fact, this is not new. This is the second generation of the convertible. The car first appeared in 2002, and at the same time it began to be sold on the domestic market. For ten years, the model has remained relevant, plus it has gone through a couple of minor upgrades.

But still, sooner or later, the life cycle of any car comes to an end. This happened with the first generation of Daihatsu Kopen. It took the manufacturer a couple of years to complete work on a new generation of urban convertible. Finally, at the end of last year, the official show of the second generation Daihatsu Copen 2016-2017 took place, sales of which in the domestic Japanese market have already started. And quite successfully.

Since the company has plans to expand the geography of this model, it is worth paying attention to the novelty and conducting a full review. This, in fact, is what we are going to do now.

Attractive appearance Copen 2016

Let's start with the fact that a completely new platform was used to build the convertible, due to which the rigidity of the body was immediately increased by 50 percent. At the same time, it was possible to maintain an acceptable weight, which is 850 kilograms.

And now as for the appearance. Compared to the first generation, the changes are global. In principle, you can recognize the first version in the new Daihatsu Copen only by name. The machine, although small, is muscular due to stampings and ribs.

The front part of the Daihatsu Kopen received a huge hexagonal false radiator grille, in the center of which there is a wide jumper in body color, you can pay attention to the photo. Against the background of a cellular grid, the machine looks quite menacing. The head optics, due to the darkened center of the headlights, looks like eyes, and their shape is appropriate. Daihatsu Copen head optics flow smoothly into horizontal LED daytime running lights, and around the edges of a fairly sporty bumper are round classic fog lights. The ribbed hood and the original shape of the windshield only add to the uniqueness of the car.

On the side, Daihatsu Kopen continues to delight us with a variety of bends and stampings, large inflated wheel arches, and original rims. The small, rounded exterior mirror housings work well with the door, which provides a fairly comfortable entry into this modestly sized convertible, all of which is clearly visible in the photographs.

The rear of the Daihatsu Copen looks great. Taillights with vertical dimensions give the impression that the machine is crying. This does not cause sympathy, but pleasantly pleases with an interesting approach to design. A lean bumper, a large diffuser, two exhaust tips at the edges, a small trunk lid topped with a spoiler, we can safely say that the designers did a very good job.

The Daihatsu Copen convertible in this case received not a fabric roof at all, but a metal one. It does not create much noise during rain, plus it automatically folds into the trunk due to the operation of the electric drive. This takes about 20 seconds for the automation.

If you see in the photo and video materials, the seating of the seats are arcs. This is not just a decorative element, although they complement the chairs perfectly. They act as safety arches that will allow passengers to avoid serious injury in the event of a car overturning.

Daihatsu Copen will get light-alloy wheels with a radius of 16 inches already. For a surcharge, designer 17-inch wheels are also available, also made of light alloy.

Dimensions

As for the dimensions, they are quite consistent with our words that we have a small city convertible in front of us. After all, for Daihatsu Copen the following figures are relevant:

Cozy cabriolet cabin

Inside the car turned out to be quite nice and cozy, it can be seen in the photo. With such a limited space, the designers managed to bring everything that is relevant for a modern car, and even more.

The Daihatsu Copen driver gets at his disposal a leather three-spoke multifunctional steering wheel, behind which is a compact instrument panel with optotronic backlight. This provides additional comfort when reading data.

The photo shows that the interior of Daihatsu Copen was richly decorated with inserts that imitate aluminum and carbon. Apparently, in this way, the designers wanted to give the convertible sportiness. Basically, it worked out really well.

The center console is also not large, plus it has a certain slope. A large touchscreen display of the infotainment complex was installed at the top of the console.

Also, it should be noted the original control unit, which is responsible for the climate equipment.

If the first generation of Daihatsu Copen had only a subtle hint of lateral support for the seats, then in the second generation it is already pronounced. Due to the presence of the possibility of adjustments, the chairs can be adjusted specifically for themselves. Customers will be pleased with the presence of heated seats, which they get with the purchase of basic equipment. Plus, due to the height-adjustable steering column, it will not be difficult to optimally adjust the driver's seat.

Options Copen 2016-2017

The Japanese car offers a lot of useful and interesting equipment. Moreover, even the basic equipment Daihatsu Copen provides more than a lot. So, the composition of the initial equipment can include:

  • optitronnaya illumination of the dashboard;
  • height-adjustable steering wheel;
  • decorative inserts for aluminum and carbon;
  • seat heating system;
  • parktronic;
  • keyless entry system;
  • climate control;
  • audio system;
  • electronic security systems ABS, EBD, ESP;
  • 16 inch alloy wheels.

Apparently, buyers receive a touch-screen display of a multimedia complex for a surcharge. Although it is possible that it will be offered in the basic configuration when Daihatsu Kopen gets to other markets.

The price of a new convertible

Unfortunately, but so far, the 2016-2017 Daihatsu Copen is only available in Japan. Accordingly, we can only name prices in Japan so far.

So, for the basic configuration of an urban coupe-cabriolet, which has a fairly solid amount of equipment, in the homeland of Daihatsu, they ask for about 1.8 million yen. Translated into more familiar and understandable US dollars, this is approximately 17.5 thousand conventional units.

In the camp of the company, they say that in the near future it is worth waiting for the appearance of their convertible Daihatsu Kopen on the international arena. The geography of distribution of new items remains unknown, just like even the approximate timing of the release of the car outside of Japan.

Specifications

Frankly, the technical characteristics of the car were too modest. A car, where the engine volume does not even reach 1 liter, looks somehow strange. Even if its mass is 850 kilograms, as is the case with Daihatsu Copen.

But let's not delay the fun. So, in the engine compartment of our little convertible is a three-cylinder gasoline engine with a volume of only 0.66 liters. It is saved by the fact that it is equipped with a turbocharging system, as a result of which the power has reached 64 horsepower. The torque is only 92 Nm.

As much as possible due to the operation of this motor, the machine can accelerate to a good 170 kilometers per hour. Even acceleration from standstill to 100 kilometers per hour does not look as sad as one might initially assume - 12 seconds.

Of course, the Daihatsu Copen convertible's gas requirements are modest - only 4.5 liters in the combined cycle for every 100 kilometers traveled.

The motor is completed with a five-speed mechanics or a CVT variator, offered as an option. Optionally, by the way, the car can be equipped with an electronic limited slip differential.

The manufacturer reports that soon the range of engines will expand to two power units. The new engine will be a four-cylinder 1.3-liter unit with a more solid 86 horsepower.

Videos test drive

Conclusion

The new generation of the small urban coupe-cabriolet Daihatsu Copen pleases, first of all, with its unusual appearance. This is a great car for warm countries, or for those who have more than one car in the garage, and spring and summer allow you to drive with an open top.

Of course, we have a car for two, which is not designed for the track and exorbitant speeds. On such a car, I want to drive through picturesque corners, country roads, and come to wild beaches.

No one would be surprised if in Europe these cars begin to scatter like fresh beer in Germany during Oktoberfest. The comparison is strange, but still fair.

Considering the fact that in Europe they will ask for about 15 thousand euros for such a convertible, and the basic configuration is enough to satisfy the needs of a modern car owner. Therefore, we will look forward to news from the camp of the Japanese automaker Daihatsu. Who knows, maybe several batches of a two-seater convertible will be brought to Russia. Residents of the same Krasnodar Territory, such a novelty may well come to taste.

Reviews from Daihatsu Copen owners

Daihatsu Copen, 2005

This car was decided to purchase as a gift to his wife. When the Daihatsu Copen was delivered, I was out of town. Had arrived. I saw in the parking lot and "fell out." Against the background of other key cars, this is probably the most "key". In terms of dimensions, there is nothing to compare with. However, with the growth of 185, it was placed without any inconvenience. Unless landing and disembarking requires some skill. But this is with the roof up. The seats are quite comfortable, legroom unexpectedly plenty. By the way, hand luggage periodically spends time there - at the feet of the passenger, of course. The interior of the Daihatsu Copen is pleasant to look at and feel. Good quality plastic. Started. Everything here is grown-up. The motor is complete. 4 cylinders. Chain. Twin cam. Turbine. But everything is very compact. You can get the air filter. But oil is a “song”. If you use the original or a complete analogue, it is 50 mm high, then there are no special problems. It slips between the legs of the front engine mount. There is just such a distance. If the filter is not native, then it is possible to remove the front bumper. Box with manual gear selection. I didn't notice much of a difference with the automatic. The engine spins up to 8500 - this is the beginning of the red zone. But it goes from 2500 to 6500. In terms of dynamics, the Daihatsu Copen starts very sluggishly from a place. The turbine has earned - let's go. Nevertheless, it rides very decently for its size. Up to 100 about 11 sec. With the roof down, body rigidity drops sharply. This is especially noticeable on our roads. 15th wheels plus low profile - a visit to the dentist. Very stiff suspension. You feel everything you are walking on. Like karting. And it handles pretty much the same. Ground clearance of 10 cm is not enough. This is due to stretch marks on the bottom for rigidity. The roof is lowered by an electro-hydraulic drive. Overclocked to 170 - scary. Consumption on average 7-10 liters. Depends on driving style.

Advantages : appearance. Controllability. Motor. Checkpoint.

Flaws : very stiff suspension.

Daihatsu Copen, 2002

The most positive thing about the Daihatsu Copen is the hard top, which is hydraulically actuated, but as I understand it, manual opening is also provided in case of emergency. Very important - no spare. There is a repair kit consisting of some kind of sealant and a compressor, i.e. made his way - he poured sealant into the wheel, pumped it up, the hole stuck and drove off. I think that in the conditions of Russia it is not very convenient. Noise isolation is not important - Daihatsu, after all. The engine is nice. Volume 660 cm3. With turbine and two shafts. For a weight of 840 kg is very enough. But do not compare with other, more powerful cars. Like any turbo engine, it pulls at high speeds, which I didn’t like - “turbo lag”. From the start, I want to go out and push, but then it turns normally. Transmission - automatic (type-tronic) with manual switching on the lever. Running hard in moderation, the car is downed and normally controlled. On the Daihatsu Copen highway, all 140 km / h is squeezed out normally and there is no “prowling nose” effect, which I personally observed on the Toyota MR-S. From below, the car looks decent - two X-shaped stiffeners, in general, the whole bottom is on the same level, nothing sticks out or sticks out. I did not time the acceleration and folding of the roof. My personal impressions are a good car, but not for a man, it is somehow feminine, but this is a matter of taste, of course. The air conditioner on the Daihatsu Copen works very well - the interior is small, it cools and keeps well, even on the "two" it's cold when you "pump".

Advantages : folding roof. Turbine engine. Controllability. Rigid suspension.

Flaws : not for men. Bad ride from the start.

Daihatsu Copen, 2002

I took Daihatsu Copen in a complete set with an automatic top and a manual gearbox. At first I wanted an "automatic", but I did not find information on it. As for the mechanics, it’s quite good, after the “tens” the gears are clearer, they turn on right away. The top pleased me in general, but the car was delivered to me in September, so I used the top for half a month, then closed it and forgot, now it’s warm in it and not even everyone will say that it’s a convertible. On the road, the Daihatsu Copen is quite good, but it only has problems with speed. On the speedometer "maximum speed", but it seems to indicate 175. In general, it's not entirely clear. But Daihatsu Copen is picking up this speed to the fullest, you don’t even need to scoff. We have a mountain outside the city, where I go somewhere 150-160, but there is simply no arrow. She leaves for 140 and that's it. As for the design, it is controversial. The engine is so economical that I didn’t even believe at first, and this despite the fact that it calmly keeps 6000 rpm, sometimes I even bring it up to 7500. Red line with 8000. It's even surprising how some kind of rotor. Now about the cons, they are also significant: the engine, although powerful, but not on the entire range, so at the beginning you honor the failure, then it seems like a powerful push and then only a roar and by 7000 you don’t get any feedback (only the sound is killer). 2 exhaust pipes could and put the engine stronger. The weight of Daihatsu Copen is very small (800kg) and in the wind you feel how it controls you. The place is small, and if you plant someone, then you can forget about things. You can't even put your bag. But the most problematic is the clearance of 10 cm, even the curb is higher.

Advantages : manageability. Checkpoint. Removable roof.

Flaws : failure in the engine on the "bottom". Light weight. No space for luggage. Clearance.

Daihatsu Copen, 2003

Machine for pleasure for every day. Design at Daihatsu Copen in a classic style mixed with "Hi-tech". It is felt that the designers looked at the Porsche of the 50s and managed to beat this motif, so the design of the Daihatsu Copen can be considered classic. The car in the photo and the car live are 2 completely different pictures, live it is much more interesting and expressive (the condition of the new car). Consumption on the highway 4-7 liters per 100 km. The condition of the interior is like that of a new car, as well as the body. The gears turn on smoothly, the most surprising thing is that the car drives like a bullet from 1st gear. Dry weight Daihatsu Copen only 800 kg, very light. Holds the road like it's on rails, I don't even know what to compare it to. Landing is comfortable with a height of 190. The roof opens and closes with a button in 17-20 seconds. When the roof is raised, the volume of the trunk is 240 liters, the trunk is electric with a closer. The car was operated only in the summer, which is confirmed by the mileage, but I think that it will be good to move around in it in the winter, as the interior warms up instantly. Children, wherever you go into the yard, are delighted, and adults too. It is warm in winter, as the engine warms up the interior instantly. I don’t even know what can be added from tuning. The headlights look like a UFO when you turn everything on. Of consumables only oil and pads changed, nothing else to do. There was nothing to do, did body polishing. There are, of course, small chips, the car is still 15 years old. Most of all I was surprised by the state of the paintwork - the color and texture are like those of a new one from the salon. Of the minuses of Daihatsu Copen - there were noises when the roof was closed, I bought rubber bands from a saw, put it on and that's it - peace and quiet. Wheels for 13 is enough, I don’t understand who puts on 15. Buy a car more and put at least how much. And so for the city it is enough for the eyes and it looks harmonious. The engine is not for racing, but it is enough, the tax is 300 rubles.

Advantages : bright appearance. Controllability. Warm interior in winter. Economical.

Flaws : insignificant.

Daihatsu Copen, 2003

I must say right away that Daihatsu Copen is a gift, but they don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. I rode only in the summer and got great pleasure. For the curious, I immediately inform you that the auction plus delivery is 320 thousand rubles, the duty is 28 thousand rubles, well, and more investments. Seriously, to go fast, you have to put pressure on the gas all the time and turn the engine. Because of this, the expense is quite large. If you drive calmly, the consumption will probably be less, but I love speed. I can’t say anything about repairs, the car is from an auction, the mileage is small. There are shortcomings, but they are insignificant for me personally. For example, when the roof is closed, the locks with which it is fixed to the body rattle a little, but since I drive with the roof open almost all the time, this is not annoying. The seats are a little uncomfortable, but this is with my height above average. But you can climb on a typewriter with such dimensions anywhere. Very handy in traffic. I like to use the tiptronic, you just need to switch the speeds with the handle, there are no buttons on the steering wheel and it’s convenient that the speeds switch down by themselves, and you can twist it up until it rings. Everything works well, the heated seats in the fall helped a lot, but about the winter I’ll say that I don’t want to mock a beautiful car and I go by taxi.

Advantages : design. Controllability. Reliability.

Flaws : Noises when the roof is closed. Weak engine.

Elena, Khabarovsk

Roadsters on the roads of the northern capital are not such a rare occurrence, but a red baby of an unknown brand invariably attracts attention. How how? Daihatsu? Chinese, right? There is no point in being offended: this Japanese brand, although it officially supplied some of its models to Europe, is practically unknown to us. And what Copen is and what it is eaten with, only a small select group knows.

Copen looks, with the top down or with the top up, surprisingly harmonious. In the closed version, only the joints of the roof panels give out an “opener” in it. For an ignorant person - just a small compartment. Not every member of the transformer clan can boast of such mastery of disguise. Suffice it to recall the not very successful in terms of design, Ford Focus CC or Opel Astra Twintop.

Outwardly, the little car is an amazing sweetheart. The fashion for ostentatious aggression passed him by. Even premium models will envy the quality of coloring. Here it is - the advantage of small-scale assembly. Only in Europe, it is customary to collect expensive supercars every month with circulations of several hundred, and the Japanese took and released a kei car.

The exterior design is retro-inspired and plays on the aesthetics of 1960s sports cars. But since the roadster is not focused on nostalgic "old men", there are a lot of fashionable youth chips in appearance.

In front you are met by the face of a charming Pokemon, which looks at the world with a kind look of lensed, but at the same time halogen headlights. Lighting works conscientiously, it is not necessary to regret the absence of xenon under any circumstances. But the most interesting thing about Copen is at the back. There are three reasons for the owners of many cool sports cars to turn green with envy. A stylish duck-tail spoiler lurks on the trunk lid - a longtime fetish for owners of, say, a Porsche 911. And how do you like the dual exhaust in the center? Tough guys on the BMW X6 give tuners like Hamann a lot of money for such a system. And here everything is in stock.

Lowering the roof, we see the third point of pride - chrome arches behind the seats. In the basic configuration of the Mercedes SLK, this accessory does not shine for you, but on an inexpensive Japanese roadster - please.

Inside

The Japanese were also generous with buns for the interior. A grippy Momo steering wheel, gorgeous Recaro seats - you might think that you found yourself in a smaller version. The aluminum ball of the five-speed mechanics lever gives rise to associations with sports Honda like cult or. All this is logically complemented by red fabric inserts on the seats and door cards. Car fetishism per square meter is at the highest level here. The nomination "Most Desirable Car of Japan" for 2003 and 2004 went to Copen by right.

The interior design itself is ascetic and strict, the plastic in it is made of hard rock, which, given the class of car, is logical. Two riders of average build will not have to complain about tightness. The assembly, as befits a model developed primarily for the domestic market, is a reference. Daihatsu's equipment is reasonably sufficient: the roadster has air conditioning, music, electric windows and heated mirrors, heated seats and a lockable armrest. At the time of the debut of Copen, this one was quite a decent mincemeat.

The hard convertible top is electrically lowered or raised. A prerequisite for "removing the cap" is a complete stop and tightened handbrake. The procedure is almost completely automated, only the latches on the windshield frame are clicked off manually. The whole process takes about 20 seconds. Trunk volume with the top up - 210 liters, one to one like the latest MINI Hatch. Theoretically enough even for a trip, a couple of small suitcases will fit without problems. But the lowered roof eats up more than 90% of the space, leaving a measly 14 liters, and this must be taken into account.

In move

Given the number of sports accessories, it would be foolish to expect a smooth ride from Copen. And Daihatsu did not let us down. Suspension travel is not just short, but ultra-short. But you won’t get me, the owner, with this - it’s a common thing. Copen stiff suspension is actually very disciplined: you drive the car with concentration, thinking through every maneuver in advance. But all this is just for the sake of pleasure to go through the winding path, rushing to the attack at every turn. And here the roadster is simply inimitable - sensitive and maneuverable, go-kart as it is. No wonder, because his 87 thoroughbred Japanese horses drag only 840 kg of weight. Having considered the power-to-weight ratio, I turn green with envy. A little over 100 hp per ton, comparable to my base Audi A5 Sportback. It is not surprising that Daihatsu takes only 9.5 seconds to accelerate to a hundred. Even by today's standards, this is quite an acceptable result for an inexpensive microcar.

Click, click - the short-stroke “mechanics” lever with clear, rough shifts wants to be released only in order to grab a tighter grip on the magnificent sports “donut”, which pleases with sharpness and transparent feedback. The feeling of driving a real sports car (there is even a spacer under the hood - in the base!) does not leave you for a minute. Not without reason in Japan on such Pokemon they arrange competitions in the class of kei cars. The ground clearance of the roadster is also a sports car - only 105 mm. Thank God that its absolute value is sufficiently offset by a short base and small overhangs. So the clearance is normal, with due accuracy nothing strikes anywhere.

What the Copen lacks is a stylish base cap. The wind is rushing around the cabin, despite the presence of a windscreen (optionally, a larger one could be installed). At urban speeds, sun visors that rise up help out a lot, but it is worth accelerating over 80 km / h, as the raging elements can no longer be stopped. There is no point in riding Copen in a different style than pedaling to the floor and up to maximum engine spin. Despite the appearance of a good Pokemon, this is not just a nyasha on wheels. The Japanese created a real sports car in a compact body, endowed it with a mass of stylish chips, and only by some lucky chance allowed the Europeans to taste this purely national product.

Purchase History

Yuri became the owner of Copen somewhat by accident. Until 2011, he did not even know what Daihatsu was. When the question of buying a summer car came up, the list of contenders consisted of only one Smart Roadster. The car was needed as fresh as possible, with a range of up to 50 thousand kilometers. But the most recent copies of the German variation on the Lotus Elise theme were discontinued in 2006. It was not economically feasible to bring a car older than five years from abroad, and Yuri did not consider the domestic market. And then Daihatsu Copen appeared on the horizon. His candidacy was proposed by one of the agents for the search and delivery of cars, which Yuri turned to. The option seemed extremely interesting, and a search began throughout Europe, which took about 3 months. Yuri really wanted a silver roadster, but such cars came only with a leather interior, which was just not needed. As a result, the choice fell on a red copy from Germany in 2007 with a range of 35 thousand kilometers. The previous owner was a woman who drove Copen for two years. For the next 1.5 years, the car stood in the showroom and waited for Yuri to find it. The car itself cost the new owner 10 thousand euros. Customs clearance and agent services accounted for another 40% of this amount. Repair Residents of the Far East know: there is no more reliable car than a Japanese made for the domestic market. Daihatsu Copen is unique in that only the steering wheel and motor have been redesigned to meet European requirements. So the red Pokemon is reliable, like a tank. In the car, which drove another 35 thousand kilometers in Russia, only consumables changed. Oil, filters and pads are unified with mass Toyota for the European market and are always in stock. But Yuri orders original parts with the Daihatsu label. The cost of spare parts is in any case low, and there is no point in saving. Expenses:
  • OSAGO - 4500 (for 6 months)
  • Maintenance (oil filter - 300-500 rubles; pads - 500 rubles)
  • Fuel consumption in the urban cycle - 7.7 l / 100 km
  • Fuel consumption on the highway - 5 l / 100 km
  • Fuel consumption in the combined cycle - 6 l / 100 km
  • Gasoline - AI-92 and higher
Improvements Despite the abundance of proposals for Copen tuning, Yuri avoided the temptation to install a turbo kit and Lambo doors. To soften the hard ride of the roadster, fifteen-inch wheels with a 50th profile gave way to tires 125/55 R14 from Michelin. Discs Yuri, having decided to support the domestic manufacturer, installed forged ones from VSMPO. Added to the list of improvements stylish awning for the winter, ordered from England for 150 pounds, and satellite signaling.

Of the unrealized plans - the application of airbrushing on the body and the installation of a safety cage. Yuri wants to decorate Copen, but for now it's just an idea. But the idea of buying a stylish frame from Aoshima disappeared by itself after converting the price from yen to rubles. Almost a hundred thousand for a set of metal pipes is too much. Exploitation Yuri operates Copen from May to October. The roadster did not get further than Kronstadt and Krasnoye Selo, and saw snow only once in March 2011, when it was delivered from Germany. Yuri rides Copen every day, but only when the soul sings. And then only a real exotic can outshine the Japanese milyaga on the road. Ordinary models are killed by the wow effect and put to shame at the start from a traffic light. The first hundred or two hundred meters, thanks to the weight of a fluff and close gear ratios, Copen gives a light even to eminent sports cars. In any other mood, all the advantages of Daihatsu can easily turn into disadvantages.

Daihatsu has recently become known to a fairly wide range of motorists. It mainly produces compact cars, the main orientation of which is movement in the city. Also in the assortment of the company there are larger models.

Recently, among the crossovers, minivans, hatchbacks produced by Daihatsu, a new Copen model has appeared. This interesting machine appears before us in the form of a cute little urban convertible, although the Japanese company insists that their latest creation is a coupe-cabriolet. But, in principle, it does not matter.

By the way, to be honest, the car is rather not new, but updated. After all, its first version was released back in 2002. The 2016-2017 Daihatsu Copen is the second generation of the Asian auto industry model, which has been successfully sold in the domestic market all this time. For a whole decade, the car was modernized twice, but nothing significant was changed.

However, in any case, in the automotive world, this or that model of any brand needs to be updated and restarted. It's the same here. The new generation Daihatsu Kopen was designed for about two years. And a few months ago, the Japanese company presented the second generation of the urban mini-cabriolet of the new model year to the whole world. In Japan, the novelty has already gone on sale, and with a fairly large share of success. Therefore, and not only because of this, the company is seriously thinking about expanding the geography of the model. Here it makes sense for us to get to know the machine better. In view of the imminent prospect of opening it by a domestic buyer, it is worth conducting a full review with a product that is not familiar to us.

Appearance Daihatsu Kopen 2016–2017

Attractive appearance is the first characteristic of the new urban convertible, which is clearly evident. If you compare it with the previous generation, then the changes are simply global, because, without knowing the name of the car, you can’t say that they are relatives. Having survived restyling, the car has changed very much, and, undoubtedly, for the better. Small dimensions compensate for the abundance of stampings and ribs on the body.

The manufacturer decided to use a completely new platform, automatically increasing the level of body rigidity by 50%. But at the same time, oddly enough, the mass of the entire building remained the same - a modest 850 kg.

Ahead, on a small and seemingly modest city convertible, a powerful and aggressive false radiator grille of an interesting shape in the form of an irregular hexagon perched. And in the middle it is crossed by a thick jumper, made in the same color scheme as the body. In combination with a mesh mesh, the front part looks pretty serious. The darkened center of the headlights gives the impression that the car is looking at us with real human eyes, besides, the designers gave them the appropriate shape to enhance the similarity. From the head optics, neat and very unusual running lights on LEDs smoothly follow vertically down. And the classic round fog lights complete such a harmonious optical ensemble. The final notes of uniqueness are brought by a windshield of outlandish shape and a ribbed hood.

On the sides of the convertible flaunts a lot of stampings and bends, large inflated wheel arches and remarkable rims. The rear-view mirrors are made in a miniature format, their rounded shape is perfectly combined with compact doors. Despite the seemingly small size, the doors were not cramped, they are able to provide a very comfortable fit for almost any size passenger.

The design of the rear of the car is beyond praise, because all the elements are so distinctive and original that it can neither be compared nor described. Vertical parking lights seem to flow from the taillights, giving the impression of tears rolling from the eyes. This is a very original, new and attractive solution. Competent and skillful work of designers does not end there. The compact trunk lid with an elegant spoiler, a large diffuser, a lean bumper and an exhaust system in the form of two pipe nozzles look great.

Daihatsu Kopen is a convertible with a metal roof, and not with a fabric one, as we are used to. This design folds up within 20 seconds and retracts into the trunk using an electric drive. In addition, with such a roof in the cabin there is much less noise from raindrops. Technicians have provided a rather interesting element of safety for passengers. In the photo you can see arcs behind the armchairs, which, at first glance, perform a strictly decorative function. However, their purpose is to protect people from serious injury when an accident occurs or the car rolls over. By the way, they look very nice and are a full-fledged part of the whole ensemble.

In the basic version, the manufacturer offers customers 16-inch alloy wheels. And in a more advanced configuration, you can get designer wheels with a diameter of 17 inches from the same light alloy.

Dimensions Daihatsu Copen 2016–2017

In principle, there is no doubt that this model is a full-fledged compact convertible for urban use, the dimensions will prove it.

Japanese novelty interior

The salon turned out to be cozy and very pleasant to look at. The designers were given little space, but they still managed to provide the car with a complete list of features and details typical of a modern car.

The driver's seat is equipped with a multifunctional three-spoke steering wheel, a compact instrument panel with optotronic backlight, thanks to which it will be much more comfortable to read data from the instruments.

The design of the interior of the convertible is made in a slightly sporty style, this is emphasized by numerous aluminum and carbon inserts. In general, this move played quite well.

The center console also turned out to be quite compact, in addition to this, the designers placed it at an angle. Above its buttons is a large display on the touch control, representing the infotainment complex.

A separate item is the climate control unit, designed in a very original and unusual way for a European user.

The seats in the cabin have obvious lateral support, while in the first generation of Copen there was only a faint hint of it. Technicians provide the possibility of adjusting the position of the seats individually for each user. The basic equipment of the cabin includes a small bonus in the form of heated seats, which will certainly please any buyer of a car of this model. In addition, the steering column can be adjusted in height, which will further facilitate the adjustment of the driver's seat.

Second generation Daihatsu Copen equipment

Japanese technicians and engineers have completed their new convertible model with a lot of interesting and useful equipment. Even in the basic configuration, a lot of things are presented, including:

  • climate control;
  • seat heating system;
  • steering wheel height adjustment;
  • optitronnaya illumination of the instrument panel;
  • audio system;
  • decor in the form of aluminum inserts and carbon elements;
  • the ability to access the salon without a key;
  • parktronic;
  • electronic security system ABD, EBS, ESP;
  • 16" light alloy wheels.

Most likely, the touch screen of the multimedia system is not included in the basic package, you will have to pay extra for its installation. True, it is possible that as the model enters the continent, additional options will be added to the basic package.

The cost of a small urban convertible from Japan

Due to the fact that so far sales of this model have started only in its homeland, only Japanese prices are available. Coupe-cabriolet with the initial kit is sold at a price of 1.8 million yen, which, translated into more familiar US dollars, is approximately 17.5 thousand USD.

Specifications coupe-cabriolet

In this area, experts have been very modest, placing a 0.66-liter engine under the hood of a baby. Its design is equipped with three cylinders and a turbocharging system, which, frankly, saves the convertible in terms of power. The maximum car is capable of delivering 64 hp. with a torque of 92 Nm.

Surprisingly, in dynamics, everything is not so bad. The maximum speed reaches 170 km / h, and accelerates to hundreds of cars in 12 seconds. Although, looking at the technical data, everything seemed much sadder.

Naturally, Daihatsu Kopen's fuel consumption level is very modest - 4.5 liters in mixed driving for every 100 kilometers.

The engine is paired with either a five-speed manual transmission or a CVT variator. The latter, by the way, comes as an additional option. Also, for a fee, the machine can be equipped with an electronic limited slip differential.

After some time, the manufacturer promises to add another unit to the main engine. Its volume will be twice as large - 1.3 liters. The four-cylinder unit will be able to develop power up to 86 hp.

Summarizing

The new car of the Japanese company turned out to be very attractive in appearance, first of all. Unusual design, original forms, fresh solutions will play their role and positively affect the level of convertible sales. An open top car is ideal for countries with a hot climate all year round or for places where the summer is quite warm, and for other seasons several other cars are in store in the garage.

You should not expect exorbitant speed and insane drive on the track from Daihatsu Kopen. After all, such a machine was created for leisurely walks outside the city, along the picturesque outskirts and trips to wild beaches. The forecast promises strong demand in the European market.

Most likely, the starting price in Europe will be approximately 15,000 euros, plus the basic package will satisfy the needs of many modern car enthusiasts. Although our country consists mostly of northern regions, there are still exceptions where a Japanese convertible is useful. For example, the Krasnodar Territory or the Crimea will be happy to see such an interesting specimen in the salon of an official dealer.
