Far from always, even the best factory equipment of a car completely suits its owner, so many of them often seek to improve the functionality of their “iron horse”, in particular, resorting to installing additional equipment. In such cases, not in the last place is the installation of an electric drive, which is used to facilitate the process of opening / closing the car doors, luggage compartment lid or for control.

As a rule, such improvements (in our country) are resorted to by owners of domestic classics (VAZ, Volga, etc.) or owners of old foreign cars, where the electric drive system was not provided by the manufacturer. However, since we live in the 21st century, it is not difficult to fill in the functional gaps left by manufacturers on our own. Of course, when it comes to electrical equipment, the issue of its installation should be approached with all seriousness and responsibility. In this article, we will tell you what you may need to install an electric trunk drive, what knowledge you need to have before proceeding to action, and finally, we will describe the stages of the installation process itself.

1. What is needed to install the electric drive on the trunk?

Before you take on the implementation of any idea, you should think carefully about what you might need for this and, accordingly, prepare everything you need. In the case of an electric luggage compartment, first of all, you need to buy the mechanism itself. Nowadays, this is not a problem at all, because it can be found in almost any auto parts store. Often, all such electromechanisms, depending on the manufacturer or some minor design features, differ from each other, but the principle of operation remains the same for everyone.

For this reason, some car owners assemble the necessary device at home, as they say "from improvised means", but to be more confident in a positive end result, it is still better to purchase a ready-made mechanism. It usually comes with: electric motor, wires, terminal, relay, fuse, button and corresponding instructions for their operation and connection. Also, it is important that a warranty card is attached to the device, thanks to which you can protect yourself from unnecessary problems in case of buying a low-quality product with a limited service life.

In addition, for installation work, you will need a standard set of tools, including pliers, screwdrivers, a drill with a drill made of carbide materials, a screwdriver. Also, it will not be superfluous to stock up on a multimeter, which will help you check the voltage in the network and save you from future unnecessary problems associated with a short circuit against a background of high voltage. In addition to these elements, you should immediately buy additional wires, since it is quite possible that the length of those included in the purchased set may not be enough. For their fastening and fixation of the skin (it is quite often fixed with disposable elements), corrugated tubes, clips and heat-resistant insulating tape, preferably black (less noticeable), will be useful to you.

These are the main tools and materials that are most often used in installing an electric tailgate, however, depending on the model of the car and the wishes of its owner, this list can be slightly expanded.

2. What do you need to know before installing the power trunk?

The luggage compartment lid electric drive is presented in the form of a mechanism consisting of several interconnected parts: an electric motor, two 4-contact relays, a push rod, a fuse and a button. There are two types of actuator that activate the stem to open the tailgate. The most famous is a mechanism equipped with an electric motor, since it is he who is quite practical and hardy. Somewhat less common is the drive, the principle of which is based on the use of magnetic plates. Its device is extremely complex, which, accordingly, affects the quality of work - there are many problems during operation.

The principle of operation of such mechanisms is based on the interaction of the relay with magnetic plates and goes in the following direction: when power begins to flow, the relay pulls the stem and the luggage compartment lid opens. Electromagnetic door drives (including the luggage compartment) are not recommended to be installed on old VAZ models, because they are not at all practical to use. In principle, it is possible to perform installation, but for this it will be necessary to carry out a serious modernization of the trunk lock, which in most cases is simply irrational and problematic (significant changes to the car body are required).

When buying a lock for the luggage compartment, decide for yourself for what purpose it will be used: if only to open the door using the interior button, then you can take the standard model, with self-installation of which, there should not be any problems. If you want to control its operation using the alarm panel, you will have to purchase a more complex electrical mechanism, and it is better to entrust its connection to an experienced electrician.

On the domestic market, you can find several models of electric locks, which, depending on the type, are divided into standard (have side mounting) and reinforced ones - they cost a little more, but the quality of performance and reliability of use in them is much higher. When buying an electric drive for the tailgate, pay attention to the kit with an inertial mechanism. It protects the engine from a constant load, and if the rod bumps into an obstacle, the mechanism immediately turns off.

The peculiarities of the working principle of such devices are that when the button is pressed, the mechanism first spins up, thereby increasing its own traction force, and then transfers it to the pushing rod. A drive with a standard (conventional) type of motor continues its operation in a similar situation, constantly being in the increased load mode, which ultimately leads to its rapid breakdown.

The issue of choosing an electric drive for the luggage compartment should be taken seriously, since by buying a cheap fake (and they are very common on the market), no one can guarantee the durability and quality of such a device. The best option would be to give preference to products of a proven domestic or imported manufacturer, especially if a warranty card is attached to it. Note! Installing an electric drive on a car increases the cost of the vehicle itself, and if in the future you decide to sell it, then the decision made today on such an addition will only be a plus.

3. Do-it-yourself installation of an electric trunk

Probably, there is no such car owner who would not want to improve the comfort of using his car. The installation of an electric trunk drive corresponds to this desire, since with the use of the device it will no longer be necessary to get out of the car to check if you forgot to slam the luggage compartment lid, and the problem of keys forgotten inside generally disappears by itself. To open or close the luggage compartment, simply press the button in the cabin or use the alarm remote control. In the latter case, this is especially convenient if your hands are full of items that need to be placed in the trunk. For those who would like to have the described features, but the regular design of their cars let us down in this regard, we will now tell you how you can install the luggage compartment lid electric drive yourself.

This procedure includes several steps:

The previously described process of selecting the necessary components: a set of electric drive and additional parts for its installation, the quality of which directly affects the operational reliability of the entire system;

Direct installation stage (to be described below);

The electrical part of the installation. Most often, when mounting on domestic cars, the connection is made using a button that breaks the “plus” coming from the mounting block. True, there is another way in which the task of controlling the supply of voltage is assigned to a relay that is activated by pressing a button or using a security system.

A large number of motorists who prefer to tune their car on their own face problems when passing through the stage that involves connecting electricians. Which, in fact, is not at all surprising, because, as a rule, everyone can simply screw the locks and slats, but only a properly connected electrician, with which many owners have problems, can ensure the operation of the entire system. The best option for solving them is to turn to knowledgeable people for help, but if for some reason this does not work, then you can try to make an independent connection, guided by the recommendations below and the connection diagram, which should be included in the electric drive kit.

And so, the first and most important condition is to remove the battery for the duration of the work. All subsequent actions depend on the design of the selected device and the type of its connection. For example, for the correct and efficient installation of locks controlled by remote control, you will need an appropriate wiring diagram. Often, manufacturers of electric drive mechanisms put it in the instructions for its operation, but if you could not find it there, then you can try using another proven option and ask your friends how they solved this problem, of course, if any.

Usually, first of all, the electric drive is fixed on the trunk lid and its mechanical connection with the lock itself is provided. To achieve this result, you will have to make two small incisions on the lock, and bend the resulting free part. Performing these actions allows you to gain access to that part of the lock, touching which will cause the trunk to open. Now you need to get a long metal stick from the set and fix it so that the lock can be freely closed when the system is working. It is quite possible that the extra parts of the pin (sticks) will have to be cut off.

By performing such simple manipulations, you install the device and all that remains is to connect the electrician. In most vehicles, the power comes from a positive voltage of 12 V, but if in this regard, there are doubts about a particular vehicle, then it is better to first clarify this point, and only then follow the recommendations described below.

One of the most important conditions for a positive result is the correct placement of the wiring, because the functioning of the vehicle systems as a whole will depend on its proper operation. At best, something will simply not work correctly, and at worst, a short circuit may occur, after which it is not always possible to restore the electrics and electronics of the car, not to mention the cost of such attempts.

It is worth laying wiring in those places where regular wires already pass, and in particularly difficult areas, for example, when pulling wires from the passenger compartment into the luggage compartment, it is necessary to use protective corrugated tubes.

Further, in accordance with the selected scheme, all the elements in the trunk are connected, after which the wires are pulled up to the driver's door. It all depends on the model of the vehicle: it is easier for someone to stretch the wires from below, through the door sills, and for someone it is more convenient to use the protective strips and pave the way from above. By and large, this is not important, the main thing is not to forget to immediately fix the wires with clamps. If the length of the wire included in the kit is not enough, take an additional one purchased. The joint must be soldered with a soldering iron and rewound with tape.

Go ahead. We take the negative wire and connect it to the electric drive, the second one of the same (“negative”) is connected to the main control relay, and the third (last) is connected to the alarm: find the control unit, it is usually located under the dashboard, and use the available in him free contacts. Check them, find the negative one and connect. This is the last thing to do.

Then replace the battery and check the system for operability. Sometimes, in order to close the trunk, the lock does not have enough traction. Usually, to eliminate such a problem, it is enough to install an additional spring in the lock. Well, it seems that's all, although in theory everything is always simple, but in practice there are often inaccuracies, and if you manage to deal with them yourself, we will be grateful for the additional information provided in the comments.

Motorists know that most modern foreign cars are equipped with an automated trunk opening / closing device using a special button. The mechanism is powered by an electric drive, eliminating the need for the owner to slam the lid every time. Is it possible to retrofit your car with a similar mechanism, consider below.

Theoretical facts

There is no need to "reinvent the wheel" to automatically open the trunk. It will be enough to put ordinary springs, as is common among Lada Grant car owners. To close the luggage compartment with a button, a mechanism driven by an electric motor is already required. Foreign cars, as a rule, are equipped with two electric drives, a control unit and a button in the cabin.

A pneumatic drive is considered more reliable, and an electric one is a budget option.

For example, let's analyze the principle of operation of the trunk closing mechanism of Volkswagen cars. The electric rear door kit includes two motors located in the trunk lid control units and a lock loop with a closer.

Main Assembly Parts Rear Door Diagram Installing the Electric Motor Trunk Lid Parts

The luggage compartment can be opened in several ways:

  • by pressing a button on the remote control;
  • by pressing the same button built into the driver's door;
  • mechanically using an external handle.

You can close the trunk manually or use the button on the door panel.

The trunk open/close motors are equipped with a force limiter, so that they stop if there is an obstacle in the way of the lid movement. As a result, the opening process is interrupted. Similarly, the limiter also works when the lid is closed, interrupting the movement of the mechanism and shifting its position slightly back.

To manually open or close the luggage compartment, a little more force is applied to the lid than usual, as a result, the electric drive is turned off.

If there is a breakdown in the electrical circuits of the trunk drive, the motors do not turn off, that is, they remain mechanically connected to the lid. Therefore, to open or close the door in this case, it will take a lot of effort.

Equipment of a domestic car with an electric trunk

If you install an electric drive for opening and closing the trunk on a domestic car (for example, a VAZ), the basic elements of the mechanism alone, which are already far from cheap, will not be enough. You will also need to install a trunk closer. Therefore, this method of refinement is irrational.

For domestic cars, a cheaper and simpler solution is suitable, such as using a power window drive.

To bring this idea to life, you need to buy two ESP mechanisms (for example, consider the products of the Forward company worth about three thousand rubles), a trunk lid control button (type 21100-3710620, cost - 50 rubles) and an auto glass closing module (brand DenUp-RWC702m, price - 500 rubles).

Power windows "Forward"

In our example, power windows are installed in the luggage compartment of the Lada Priora using a simple connection. The rear edge of the ESP rail is threadedly connected to the cross member at the back of the seat, on which the shelf rests. The front end of the power window bracket with a welded nut is screwed to the rear window mounting beam. To do this, a groove is cut in the beam, into which the M6 nut would pass.

As a result, the assembled structure works without problems when you press a button specially brought into the cabin or on the remote control.

Wiring diagram

The use of a single power window is inefficient, as it hardly copes with its task, and the trunk lid closes skewed.

The mechanism of two ESPs is deprived of these troubles. In some cases, the position of the lock will need to be adjusted.

Installation of a standard electric drive on Lada

The frets of the "tenth" family of the last years of production are equipped with an electric drive for opening / closing the trunk directly at the factory. In earlier series of cars, such equipment is not available, so owners will have to install an electric trunk drive with their own hands.

Our example involves the operation of the electric trunk through a separate button in the cabin. Some alarm systems have an additional possibility - to open the luggage compartment, so we will connect the electric drive to this system. For installation, you will need the mechanism itself and the mounting plate.

If there is an electric drive in a universal configuration, then the mounting brackets will need to be made independently.

In addition, you will need four meters of electrical wire and a button switch.

Before installing the drive, be sure to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Then we fasten the lock drive and remove the protective cover, having removed the fastening latches before that. Using pliers, we straighten the rear end of the electric drive, unscrew the screw securing the thrust, but not completely. The lock lever has been disassembled. Now the compartment does not open from the outside, since the lock release mechanism is disconnected from the lock cylinder.

Next, on the trunk lid amplifier, you should mark the places for drilling the mounting holes for the electric drive attached to the lock. Using the marks with an electric drill, we drill holes with a diameter of 3 mm. Then it is necessary to bend the rod and make a U-shaped bracket of such a width from 4 mm steel wire that its edges without effort enter into the exit points of the drive shell tides.

At each end of the bracket, an M4 thread must be pre-cut. Finally, we fix the electric drive using the prepared bracket, and connect the thrust lock to it.

The green wire on the electric actuator supplies current to the button due to the retraction of the stem. This wire is laid next to the native cable harness. We connect the ground to the blue wire, which is negative. It can be powered from any bare area of the car body. Salon button is installed on the dashboard in the left corner of the mounting block.

The operating voltage will be connected to it from the block Ш1 (pin 2). After assembly, you can check the performance of the system by pressing the salon button. Everything should work clearly.

Trunk equipment with electric lock

The power trunk lock can be installed in another way. To do this, you need a sheet of steel from which the mounting plate is made. The upholstery of the compartment must be carefully removed and the actuator screwed to the steel plate using two metal screws. The plate itself is attached with two M5 screws. We insert the curved end of the rod into the corresponding socket of the electric drive, and clamp its second edge with pliers.

In the process of tightening the rod of the electric drive, it is necessary to achieve the opening of the lock, for which the length of the rod is adjusted with its bending in the middle. Then follows the process of connecting electrical wires. The luggage compartment factory wiring harness has a two-pole block with white and black wires. The white wire must be connected to the blue output of the drive, and the black wire to the green. This completes the installation of the mechanism.

Power trunk: do-it-yourself installation

Probably, it’s not worth describing the painfully banal situation that at least once, but each of the drivers got into when, after starting the engine of your car, you suddenly find that you need to get some thing out of the trunk, or put it there. Further, the whole process of opening and closing the tailgate looks like this: you need to turn off the engine, because you will need keys to open the lock, and then get out of the car. All this is inconvenient and takes extra time, especially when you have to rush somewhere. In order to fully automate this process and save the driver from unnecessary gestures, an electric trunk drive was developed. Today, such a device can be installed with your own hands on any vehicle.

Electric tailgate lock: features of operation

Let's start with the fact that the option to open the tailgate from the passenger compartment appeared relatively recently. As a result, the owners of cars equipped with such a function have not yet fully got used to the novelty. In order to activate the power tailgate and open it, you must press the corresponding button. There is nothing particularly complicated, but for how much the procedure itself is simplified, especially in cold weather.

By the way, installing an electric tailgate more than ever helps drivers in the winter, when it is not possible to open a frozen lock with a key.

Most car owners begin to mercilessly pour boiling water over it, heat the key with a lighter, splash various defrosters into the core. And if an electric trunk lock was installed on the car, this problem of the ball would be solved by itself.

With the electric drive installed on the car, it is possible to open and close the tailgate using the key. Previously, only foreign-produced cars were equipped with such an addition. Recently, however, most domestic vehicles have an electric trunk opening among their standard devices. If it so happened that the purchased car is not equipped with such a useful option, you should not be sad, because you can install the tailgate electric drive yourself.

Schematic diagram, types and principle of operation of the trunk electric drive

The device diagram is represented by the following details:

  • button;
  • electric motor;
  • drive rod;
  • fuse;
  • relay.

Today, two designs of the rod drive have been developed. It can be an electric motor or special magnetic plates. Note that the first type is more widespread due to its practicality. The drive with magnetic plates has a more complex device and some problems during operation. The principle of its operation is based on the interaction of magnetic plates and the relay: when the relay is energized, it activates the rod, which interacts with the tailgate lock. Installing this type of drive on old models of domestic classics may be an unjustified measure, since such a design can make it difficult to open and close the tailgate on these cars.

Installation expediency

Before installing the trunk electric drive with your own hands, you need to make sure that this is appropriate, since, due to the structural features of the bodies of some models, it is considered irrational to carry out such an upgrade. And all because an electric drive is installed on the tailgate, consisting of two electric motors and a closer. Because of this, the trunk can be opened either using a special button from the passenger compartment, or by acting on the opening mechanism with an external handle. It is also possible to give commands to the lock actuator using the remote control system. In addition, special force limiters are built into the design of the electric motors, which stop the opening of the trunk when there is an obstacle to this. The mechanism works in a similar way when closing, however, when interference occurs, the process changes (the doors begin to open slightly). In this case, you will have to open or close the trunk with your hands, because after a short stronger impact, the operation of the electric drive is blocked, after which the trunk lid can be acted upon without much effort. In case of incorrect operation of the system, considerable efforts will have to be applied to the tailgate.

Electric drive connection diagram

Based on the above, before the electric drive from a foreign car is installed on a domestic car, in addition to the device itself, it will be necessary to select and purchase the appropriate tailgate closer. Of course, installing such an add-on on a car (if it is justified by the design features of the luggage compartment) will allow you to feel more comfortable from operation. Therefore, if there are no restrictions on installing an electric drive with your own hands, you should not postpone this event for later, especially since the process of upgrading the trunk is not particularly difficult and is quite within the power of the average motorist.

Which device to choose

Note that the electric lock is the same important element of the vehicle as, for example, tires. Therefore, do not treat his choice with disdain. Do not pay attention to cheap Chinese-made mechanisms that can be found in any car shop. The thing is that such devices, in addition to having a small operational resource, are very often famous for their incorrect operation, which is characterized by incorrect responses to commands. From the general mass of electric locks on the market, it is necessary to choose domestic or high-quality foreign models, since they are stable in operation and have a long service life.

It is important that the installation of such a mechanism on a car will increase its value upon subsequent sale.

How to install an electric lock on the tailgate

Before installation, you should prepare a set of necessary tools and additional materials. So, we will need:

  1. Connecting wires.
  2. Terminals.
  3. Insulating tape.
  4. Safety fasteners.
  5. Set of wrenches.
  6. Several screwdrivers (flat and curly).
  7. Wire cutters.
  8. Pliers.

It is necessary to start an independent installation of the electric drive of the trunk lid by dismantling the plastic lining located on its inner side, which closes access to the lock. Almost always, when buying this device, sellers offer to additionally purchase a lock already modified for it. You should not ignore this offer, since its purchase will allow you to avoid a number of banal problems when installing the entire mechanism and additionally save a lot of time and nerves. The next stage of installation will be wiring to the lock from the cigarette lighter power supply. The choice of a cigarette lighter is justified if this element is almost never used. In addition, if necessary, the device is able to withstand increased loads. In order to power the electric lock, it is necessary to disassemble the cigarette lighter input to install a fuse between it and the drive start button.

Recall that the fuse must be installed so that in the event of its failure, it can be approached without problems.

The drive button can be installed in any convenient place. After that, we proceed to the laying of power wires along the thresholds of the car. This will require about 3.5 meters of cable. The final stage of the installation will be the installation of a modified trunk lock, followed by its connection to the network and configuration. When connecting the electric drive, it is important not to reverse the polarity, otherwise the armature of the electric motor will rotate in the opposite direction, as a result of which the mechanism will not function. It would also be advisable to install a fuse in the circuit directly in front of the electric motor in order to avoid its possible failure.

Do I need an electric tailgate and how to install it

Probably, anyone has come across a situation when you come from the store to the car, and your hands are full of shopping bags. And the whole adventure begins: you need to put the bags on the floor, get the keys out of your pocket, open the trunk with these keys, shift the bags, close it, open the car door and only then get behind the wheel. It is especially pleasant to do this procedure in heavy rain or a blizzard. And for those who have a car alarm installed, before all the manipulations, they also need to remove the car from the security mode.

But it’s not without reason that all electronic guards have a terribly useful and convenient function called “remote unlocking of the trunk”. Of course, lucky are those lucky ones who have it installed from the factory or have it installed in a car repair shop by a kind uncle who is an auto electrician. But what about those who have a key fob from the alarm, but the opening function does not work? So jump from the doors to the trunk? There is no need to do this at all, you can install the electric trunk lock with your own hands, because this is not such a complicated procedure. Installation even for a beginner will take only a few hours.

Choice of lock drive

One has only to walk around the market or auto parts stores, or visit car services specializing in auto electrics, and one thousand and one offers to purchase an electric drive for the trunk lid lock will be instantly received. You should carefully approach the issue of choosing this part, since it depends on its quality for how long it will be possible to use a very useful trunk opening option.

You should not listen to the advice of sellers and managers that "this is exactly this super drive costing in a number with three zeros will work as it should, and ordinary door solenoids are not powerful enough for the tailgate." We must not forget that the trunk is opened with the same key as the car doors, and the same efforts are made to open it, but, judging by the advice, a small crowbar “to open the trunk” should be reported from the factory to the set of keys.

The door solenoid copes with the function of opening the lock with a bang, the main thing, as they say, is not to save on quality. That is, you should not take something Chinese and incomprehensible for a penny, there are good domestic drives, their cost is several hundred rubles, and the power is superior to foreign counterparts. And what is most surprising, they work quite quietly.

The principle of operation of the electric trunk lock

The solenoid is powered by the vehicle's on-board voltage of 12 volts DC. With a short supply of voltage to it, it, depending on the polarity of the current, either pushes the bar forward or pushes it. The travel distance is about two centimeters.

In cars, a metal bar also passes from the lock cylinder to the locking device itself, which moves back and forth when the key is turned in the lock. It is with her that the solenoid is connected with the help of a special clamp and, with its movements, imitates the turn of the key in the larva.

Connection order

For installation you will need:

  • trunk release button;
  • five meters of copper two-core wire with a cross section of at least 1 mm2;
  • power relay;
  • electric drive for opening and closing the trunk - the solenoid itself;
  • Straight arms;
  • kilometer of electrical tape;
  • knowledge in physics at the school level;
  • this instruction on how to make an electric tailgate.

Although if the hands are really straight, you can take less tape.

It should be noted that it is better to take a power relay that briefly closes the contact when it is turned on, since a long-term (more than 2–3 seconds) voltage supply to the solenoid will cause it to simply burn out. If there is only a relay available that simply closes the contacts, you should remember that you need to press the button for a short time, a pulse of 0.6 seconds is enough to open the lock.

If the car does not have a burglar alarm, then you need to run a wire from the fuse box to the place where the trunk release button will be installed. The negative wire connects to the power relay and then goes to the solenoid. The voltage of +12 volts is connected through the button to the relay and in parallel to the input of the power switch. The output from the relay is connected to the second contact of the solenoid. It turns out that when you press the button, the relay turns on, the contact closes in it and the plus goes to the drive, and since the minus is constantly there, the solenoid drive comes into motion and the trunk opens.

Thus, when you press a button in the car, the trunk opens, however, in practice this is of little use, because it cannot be opened remotely, since there is no key fob. But there are also such options.

If everything is in order with the alarm and it is present, then you should do the same as described above. The difference is that some alarm systems only apply a negative charge to the lock control wire, and you will have to swap the wires in the relay-button circuit. The wire itself from the alarm unit must be connected through a diode to the wire going from the button to the relay.

The diode is needed so that when the opening button is pressed, the voltage does not flow back to the alarm unit, otherwise it may burn out. Most blocks have a protective diode inside, but it's better to be safe and put another one.

If the alarm unit has a positive charge, then simply connect it through a diode to the wire going to the relay from the button.

An important point: in the car alarm settings there are two modes of drive types - electric and pneumatic. You need to specify electric, since with these settings a short impulse will be given to unlock the lock.

Installation of the electric trunk

Far from always, even the best factory equipment of a car completely suits its owner, so many of them often seek to improve the functionality of their “iron horse”, in particular, resorting to installing additional equipment. In such cases, not least is the installation of an electric drive, which is used to facilitate the process of opening / closing the car doors, the luggage compartment lid or to control the power windows.

The kit usually includes: an electric motor, wires, a terminal, a relay, a fuse, a button and the corresponding instructions for their operation and connection.

When buying a lock for the luggage compartment, decide for yourself for what purpose it will be used: if only to open the door using the interior button, then you can take the standard model, with self-installation of which there should not be any problems.

The previously described process of selecting the necessary components: a set of electric drive and additional parts for its installation, the quality of which directly affects the operational reliability of the entire system;

Direct installation stage (to be described below);

Power trunk lid - always convenient!

home » Tuning » Power trunk lid - always convenient!

I want to share how to install an electric drive on the trunk lid of your car yourself.

Those who have a car are used to the fact that it is easy and simple to control its every mechanism. In fact, how convenient: you press the button - and that's it, you don't need to do anything else. One of these mechanisms that make life easier for the driver is an electric drive that makes the trunk lid move.

Is an electric tailgate necessary?

I must say that the trunk, which opens automatically, is still a curiosity for so many motorists who have replaced their old cars with new models. And this is achieved with the help of an electric drive, which causes the trunk lock to work when the driver presses a button in the cabin.

It seems that there is nothing of the kind in this, but during the period of winter cold, such a device saves time and nerves of motorists well. An ordinary mechanical car lock can freeze after washing the car in winter, making it almost impossible to open it. Everyone copes with this problem as best they can - with boiling water, a hot key, and in other ways. However, the electric trunk will completely save the car owner from such troubles.

The electric drive of the trunk can be installed on a conventional lock, it allows you to use both mechanical and automatic methods of opening the lock, thus increasing the degree of protection of the trunk from burglary. There is an electric drive, as a rule, on foreign cars. Domestic-made cars with an installed electric trunk lock are not yet so widespread. Therefore, those motorists who are not lucky enough to have such a miracle device in their car can easily install it on their own.

How is the luggage compartment powered?

The trunk electric drive includes only a few parts: an electric motor, two relays with four contacts each, a rod, a fuse and a button. The drive is of two types:

  • working on an electric motor - is more practical and hardy;
  • working on magnetic plates - not very popular and not so practical.

The second type of electric trunk is very, very difficult, and this entails a lot of unpleasant moments during its operation. The mechanism of its action is as follows: magnetic plates transmit electric current to the relay, and it acts on the rod, which opens the trunk lid. With locks of such models as, for example, old VAZs, such a device does not fit well, as it requires a thorough improvement, which will also affect the car body itself. Therefore, it is better not to put a mechanism on magnetic plates in such machines.

An electric car trunk lock should be chosen very carefully. Cheap Chinese products, which are simply littered with the modern market, are definitely not suitable for use in a car, as they are very short-lived and can systematically fail. The best option would be a lock with an electric motor of Russian or foreign production. It is also worth noting that by installing such an additional mechanism, the car owner automatically increases the price of his car, which, of course, will be taken into account when selling it later, if any.

What should be considered when choosing an electric trunk lid?

When purchasing a lock with an electric motor, it is important to decide on how to control it. If it is connected only to the button in the passenger compartment, you can install it in the car without any problems yourself. If you plan to influence it using the alarm control panel, the complexity of the device will be completely different, and in this case it is better to trust a professional.

Domestic manufacturers offer consumers several models of electric locks. There are two main types of such locks:

  • standard with side mounts,
  • reinforced - their price is slightly higher, but the quality is better, which means increased reliability.

It is good if the selected device is equipped with an inertial mechanism - it eliminates the constant load on the engine, and the rod that encounters any obstacle stops working.

How it works: when the driver presses the button, the inertial mechanism first spins up, increasing the tractive force, and then transmits momentum to the rod. The operation of a drive with a conventional type of motor does not stop there, and it experiences severe overheating, which can lead to its early failure.

How to install an electric tailgate yourself?

In addition to the mechanism itself, for its installation, you will also need terminals, fasteners for the fuse, 1 mm thick electrical wires, electrical tape and tools.

Stages of work:

  • 1. Removing the plastic lining of the trunk. This process requires extra care and extreme accuracy. Then the lock is removed and one of its teeth is bent so that it takes only one click to open it.

In some auto parts stores, the car owner may be advised to additionally purchase a lock that does not need to be upgraded along with the electric drive mechanism. Such an acquisition is really expedient, because it is a significant saving of a large amount of time.

  • 2. Wiring. Before proceeding with its pulling, the terminals from the car battery must be removed. It can be powered from the cigarette lighter - this part is used little and does not carry heavy loads. To get to it, the central mine is dismantled. A fuse is installed between the cigarette lighter and the electric drive button. To make it more convenient to change the fuse in the event of a breakdown, you need to choose a place for installation so that it can be reached without problems. The button can be located anywhere - it all depends on the desires of the driver. With the help of electrical blocks, the power supply is connected in accordance with the diagram attached to the electric drive. The best option for the location of the wiring for the locking mechanism is along the car thresholds. The required wire length for wiring is 3.5 meters, it is better with a margin, the excess is then quietly cut off.
  • 3. Fixing the electric trunk lid with an electric mechanism. This can be done in several ways, it is better to choose one that does not require drilling additional holes in the trunk. If you cannot do without additional holes, you need to decide where it is best to place them. Placed on the mounting plate, the actuator is installed in the selected location. Given the length of the rod, the mechanism is fixed in the trunk.

It is best to install the device parallel to the main locking rod. An unnecessary piece of the rod, after setting it to its initial position, is removed.

  • 4. Connecting electrical wires to the trunk lid mechanism. It is extremely important not to forget about observing the polarity of the current. The wires are connected in accordance with the diagram. If the wires were connected incorrectly, the power tailgate will act in reverse and the lock will remain closed. To avoid malfunctions, a fuse is also placed in front of the lock. Connection points must be carefully insulated. Then you need to install the terminals back on the battery and test the assembled device. If any minor flaws in his work were identified, you need to slightly adjust the stem. During normal operation of the electric drive of the trunk lid, the final wiring is carried out. You can also install additional noise insulation on the plastic trunk lid before putting it in place so that the electric drive does not make noise when it is triggered.

Video on installing the electric trunk lid

Probably, anyone has come across a situation when you come from the store to the car, and your hands are full of shopping bags. And the whole adventure begins: you need to put the bags on the floor, get the keys out of your pocket, open the trunk with these keys, shift the bags, close it, open the car door and only then get behind the wheel. It is especially pleasant to do this procedure in heavy rain or a blizzard. And for those who, before all the manipulations, you also need to remove the car from the security mode.

There is no need to do this at all, you can install it yourself, because this is not such a complicated procedure.

In cars, from directly to the locking device itself, a metal bar also passes, which moves back and forth when the key is turned in the lock. It is with her that the solenoid is connected with the help of a special clamp and, with its movements, imitates the turn of the key in the larva.

Connection order

For installation you will need:

  • trunk release button;
  • five meters of copper two-core wire with a cross section of at least 1 mm 2;
  • power relay;
  • electric drive for opening and closing the trunk - the solenoid itself;
  • kilometer of electrical tape;
  • knowledge in physics at the school level;

If it is present, then you should do the same as described above.

An increasing number of drivers are interested in how to make an electric trunk drive with their own hands. Moreover, interest in this issue can be observed not only among owners of old cars. Not all new cars have this option, adding it to the package significantly increases the cost of the car. Therefore, when buying a new vehicle, many people save on this element. But, often over time, they have an idea to add this element to the design. After all, it is quite convenient. Especially when shopping. No need to put bags on the ground to open the trunk.

Options

How to make an electric tailgate with your own hands? Actually there are 2 options for solving this problem. They differ in financial and time costs:

  • Installation of the factory kit;
  • Self assembly.
Which of them is the most optimal, it is up to the car owner to decide.

factory kit. For almost all modern cars, manufacturers offer ready-made trunk electric lock kits. Usually the drive is installed at the same time as the alarm. A significant disadvantage of this design is the high price. This is especially true for foreign cars. Because of this, this option is practically not used in practice.

Tool

To assemble this design, you will need to purchase some parts. It won't cost too much. So, for work you will need:

  • Rack and pinion window regulator (VAZ-2106) - 2 pcs.;
  • Glass auto-lifting module;
  • Relay (5 contacts) - 3 pcs.;
  • Relay (4 contacts) - 2 pcs.;
  • Relay block - 5 pcs.;
  • Chips with two contacts;
  • Diodes;
  • wires;
  • Springs from the hood latch. A part from the “tenth” AvtoVAZ family will do;
  • In addition, fasteners will come in handy. Of the tools, in addition to the usual keys and screwdrivers, you need to stock up on a drill and a grinder.

Self-assembly of the drive

The assembly process is not too complicated. If you do everything carefully, then you will not have any problems with operation. If there is an installed alarm, it is advisable to look at its connection diagram (available in the instructions). The easiest way is to connect the electric lock to the standard alarm. Installation work is carried out in the following order:

  • It is better to start with the refinement of the electric drive. To do this, the motor is unscrewed. It should be deployed so that it works along the rail. At the same time, with the help of a grinder, cut off the excess of the mounting plate;
  • Next, cut out the mounting plate from perforated steel;
  • The rails of the electric drive are mounted on a pre-prepared mounting plate. And all this design is placed on the body. Please note that the iron in this part of the case is not very strong, so it is advisable to place iron corners here for greater reliability;
  • The free end of the power window is mounted in place of the trunk lid holders. It remains only to adjust the operation of the mechanism. So that when opening there is not too sharp an impact on the rails, it is necessary to fix the springs from the hood locks instead of rubber shock absorbers.

Installation

After that, it remains only to assemble the electronic part of the drive. Make it simple. When laying wires, remember the expediency. The easiest way is to stretch them where the regular harnesses pass. This is the safest and most convenient place. The connection is made as follows:

  • The control unit is located in the trunk, for greater convenience it is screwed to the rear wing. Collect it according to the scheme most suitable for you. On the Internet you can find many options for circuits for such devices;
  • Connect the motors to the control unit. Watch the polarity, otherwise the motors will work in different directions;
  • Connect the drive to the vehicle's on-board system. It is best to do this with a separate cable to the battery. Please note that the resulting device consumes a lot of electricity. When connecting to the wiring of standard devices, the fuses will constantly burn;
  • A control button is installed in the cabin. The easiest way is to place it on the bottom of the torpedo near the steering column.
    This completes the installation. It remains only to adjust the operation of the drive.

I am sure that the following situation is familiar to many motorists: I left the house, got into the car, started the engine and suddenly remembered that I forgot to put some thing in the trunk, or take something out of there. The further sequence of actions is approximately the following: we turn off the engine (after all, keys are needed to open the trunk lock), get out of the car and begin to open the trunk. If it is winter outside, then a frozen well can greatly complicate the task, often you have to run for boiling water.

All this takes a decent amount of time, which is especially noticeable when you are in a hurry to leave. You can still forget the keys in the trunk and then you will have to urgently look for how to open the lid to get them. In general, it is possible to give examples of the inconvenience of using a mechanical trunk lock for a very long time, however, today I would like to talk about a method for solving the problem ... And it is called - "Electric luggage compartment lock", which provides automatic opening of the rear door of the car, which greatly simplifies the life of the driver of the vehicle. And so, let's find out what this part is and whether it is possible to design such a "miracle" on our own.

1. Electric trunk lock: features and principle of operation of the device

The automatic trunk opening function is a fairly new option, to the existence of which, most car owners of new car models are just starting to get used to. The essence of the operation of the electric drive, which allows achieving such a result, is, in principle, not complicated: when someone presses the corresponding button in, the trunk lid lock is activated through this part, as a result of which it opens. It seems to be a trifle, but it makes life easier for vehicle owners, especially in the cold season. We have already mentioned the possibility of the keyhole freezing and then, in order to open the trunk, you have to show imagination. Most often, the lock is poured with boiling water or lighters are heated with fire, sometimes the key is heated in the same way, in general, each driver himself comes up with a way that can help solve the problem that has arisen.

But if you had an electric lock, you wouldn't have to do anything like that. This device is compatible with a standard (mechanical) lock, which means that when opening the luggage compartment lid, you can use two methods at the same time, which, by the way, increases resistance to burglary. In the past, the electric drive was installed only on foreign-made vehicles, however, today many domestic cars have it in the list of regular devices. If your car does not belong to either the first or the second group - do not be discouraged, such a mechanism can be easily installed on your own, the main desire and skillful hands.

The trunk electric drive is presented in the form of a device that includes only a few parts, which include: a button, a fuse, a push rod, two four-pin relays and an electric motor.

To date, there are two types of drive that, to open the cover, bring the stem into working condition - this is a mechanism that has either an electric motor or magnetic plates. The first is more common, as it is quite practical and hardy, and the second, due to the complexity of the design and the often occurring problems with use, has not gained much popularity among motorists. The principle of operation of this device is based on the interaction of the relay and magnetic plates: when power begins to be supplied, the relay pulls the rod back, which contributes to the opening of the trunk.

Owners of old models of domestic VAZs are not recommended to install a drive with magnetic plates, since, most likely, it will not be at all practical to use. It is worth deciding right away: do you really need to upgrade the luggage compartment lock, because in some cases, due to the possibility of significant changes in the body itself, it is not at all rational to carry out such events. The fact is that the design of the trunk lid, equipped with an electric drive, includes two engines in the control units and a lock loop with a closer. The tailgate, in this case, can be opened either using the outside handle, or using the remote control key fob button, or using the button built into the driver's door. The driver can close it either by pressing the button located on its inside, or by using the outside handle.

Also, the electric motors of the tailgate are equipped with force limiters, and if, when opening, the trunk lid encounters some kind of obstacle, the opening is immediately interrupted. The same thing happens when closing, only after a collision with an obstacle, the process not only stops, but also shifts slightly in the opposite direction, that is, the tailgate opens slightly again.

You can also perform all these actions (opening and closing) in manual mode: after a short, stronger pressure, the electric motors stop working and the operation of the trunk lid can be controlled with normal effort. If an electrical failure occurs, the drive of the electric motors is not disconnected, which means that more effort will have to be applied to open / close the door.

Based on this, if on VAZ cars you use a device for an electric trunk lock from a foreign car, then in addition to the standard parts of the system (which will cost a pretty penny anyway), you will also need to buy a trunk closer, which from the point of view of common sense is completely unreasonable. Of course, those owners who have extra money, this statement does not apply at all.

Well, let's sum it up ... The luggage compartment lock electric drive is certainly a useful and necessary thing, but only if its installation is justified. If you decide that this is your case, then go ahead - we buy all the necessary parts and proceed to the process of equipping the vehicle with additional features.

The procedure for choosing an electric trunk lid lock cannot be taken lightly. When buying, you should not pay attention to cheap Chinese fakes, which are quite popular in domestic car markets. Such an electric drive will not only not last for a long time, but it may also work incorrectly during operation. It is best to give preference to domestic or imported electric locks that provide reliability and stability for many years. By the way, installing a device of this kind significantly increases the cost of the car as a whole, which is important in the event of a future sale.

2. Installing an electric trunk lock: what you need and how to do it correctly

In order to install the trunk electric drive with your own hands, first you need to prepare all the tools and materials necessary for the job. In addition to the device itself, you will need: terminals, fuse holders, electrical tape, electrical wires with a cross section of 1 mm and a tool kit including screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, etc. All this must be collected before starting work, so that nothing distracts you during the installation process. So, now about the process itself ... At the initial stage, it is necessary to remove the plastic lining of the trunk, only carefully so as not to damage it. Several bolts and plastic latches act as fasteners for this part, so there should not be any difficulties with dismantling.

Then, we proceed to the removal of the lock, in which it will be necessary to bend one clove (in this way, when opened, it will work with one click). Some auto shops, in addition to the electric drive, also offer to purchase a new lock that does not require modification. You should not take such an offer "with hostility", because the new part will really save you a lot of time, and it will work a little more accurately.

After manipulating the keyhole, we proceed to laying the wiring, but before that, do not forget to remove the car from the battery, you never know what. To perform this stage of work, you will need electrical power coming from the vehicle's cigarette lighter. This choice is quite justified, because this element is the least used and does not have a large load. In general, we disassemble the central shaft and install a protective fuse in the gap between the cigarette lighter and the electric drive button. Its location should be chosen so that in the event of a breakdown it would be easy to get to it and carry out a replacement. You can install the button responsible for opening the luggage compartment wherever you want, however, if there is a regular place for this, then placing it near the cigarette lighter or small change box will be illogical.

Subsequent actions are carried out according to the scheme that comes with the electric drive. With the help of electric pads, we make power piping, and it is best to lay and install the wiring of the electric lock along the thresholds of the vehicle, additionally isolating it in places where moisture can accumulate. The length of the cable required for operation is approximately 3.5 meters, the excess part can always be cut off.

After completing these steps, we proceed to the final stage of installing the tailgate electric drive mechanism. There are several options for further installation steps: you can connect the part to the standard trunk lid lock; replace it with a similar one, more suitable for interaction with the electric drive; install a ready-made kit for the electric trunk lid lock, which is quite often found on sale.

From our point of view, it is best to choose the method in which you do not have to make additional holes in the luggage compartment mount. If, in your case, this phenomenon cannot be avoided, then immediately determine the most convenient place for this and use the mounting plate, screwing it in a well-accessible part of the trunk. The installation of the bar with the drive is carried out taking into account the length of the rod of the device. Note!It is best to carry out installation parallel to the main thrust of the lock, and an extra piece of the rod, previously placed on the electric drive in its initial position, can simply be bitten off with wire cutters.

Next, we proceed to connect the wiring to the electric drive device. At this stage, it is important to observe the polarity of the power supply, for which the wires are connected according to the instruction diagram. In case of incorrect connection, the mechanism motor will start to work in reverse order and the lock will not be able to open. Before locking the device, it is necessary to install a fuse, which will protect the electric drive from possible damage. All wiring connections should be carefully rewound with electrical tape or apply special heat shrink.

Now we put the terminals on the battery and check the performance of the installed mechanism in practice. Sometimes, there are cases when more precise adjustment of the electric drive mechanism is required, for which fine tuning of its stem is performed. If everything is good and the tailgate opens / closes freely, then the wiring can be completed. If possible, when reinstalling the plastic trunk lid, stick a special anti-noise material on it that will save you from unpleasant sounds that occur during the operation of the electric drive.

Taking into account the wishes of the owner, it is possible to simultaneously open the rear door lock using both the button and the alarm key fob (if it has any additional channel), but for this you will have to use the relay and the alarm circuit itself. Note! In order for the trunk electric drive to function normally when connected to an additional signaling channel, it is necessary to select a pulse length of 0.8 seconds.

As for the features of the installation process, there are also some nuances. For example, the inrush current when the drive is energized is approximately 15A, therefore, to power the relay, it is advisable to use a fuse on 20A. The button for controlling the position of the trunk lid can be located in a regular hole for a carrying socket (if any). From this position, it will be equally convenient to use it: both sitting in the driver's seat and standing outside it.
