Where to eliminate noise

There are two approaches to soundproofing: partial and full.

Soundproofing doors in addition to reducing noise from pavement and headwinds, improves the sound quality of your audio system. Soundproofing arches eliminates the noise coming from the wheels of the car. Music and tuning enthusiasts take a radical approach to dealing with noise, sometimes taking the car apart to the ground. This is an occupation for the giants of the spirit. For the most part, motorists are not ready to lay out decent money, spend a lot of time and effort for the sake of elusive decibels. Now, if it were relatively inexpensive and without dismantling the interior, then you can still think ...

And we thought. After that, we decided to test the anti-noise compounds that are applied to the bottom and wheel arches. After all, with a measured ride, it is the noise from the road that is the main component of extra decibels. And instead of competitions of various cans and cans, we decided to compare the methods of applying the compositions. In other words, we will evaluate not so much the means themselves as the technology of their application. The preparations we have chosen are shown in the photo. These are anti-noise polymer-bitumen mastic (aerosol) "Eltrans", slate anti-corrosion anti-noise mastic "AvtoNOL", as well as noise-absorbing material "PRIM Antishum", all three - domestic production. Spray cans and jars for manual application were purchased in the capital's stores, where, by the way, there was not much choice - I had to look! As for the professional preparation for the primer gun, we chose the most massive product used in many car dealerships.

THREE TECHNOLOGIES AND THREE CARS

There are three suitable technologies. The easiest and cheapest way is to buy a dozen anti-noise aerosol cans and spray the contents. The second option is from socialist times: arm yourself with a jar of suitable mastic and apply the coating with a brush. Finally, the third way is to surrender to the mercy of a specialized service equipped with compressors and primer guns.

How to set up an experiment? Because the different cars Initially, the noise is not the same, and the processing results can greatly depend on the car model, we decided to compare identical cars: the initial conditions should be as close as possible. The brand is of no fundamental importance: you can compare three Mercedes or, say, three Grants ... As a result, we settled on a Chevrolet: in one of the car dealerships, we were given three brand new Cruzes for experiments.

The verification method was chosen as follows. To begin with, we conducted noise measurements of all three cars on a test asphalt road. The noise level was measured in the area of ​​the driver's head at speeds of 60 and 90 km/h; a certified sound level meter Testo 816 helped us. After entering the initial data into the protocol, we went to the repair shop of the same car dealership - with spray cans, cans and pistols. On each car, the bottom and wheel arches were processed, carefully bypassing exhaust system and moving elements. After the materials have dried, they are returned to their place. removed wheels and fender liner, after which we went to the same test road and again called the sound level meter for help.

The results of the battle for silence are shown in the table.

DO NOT MAKE NOISE!

We did not discover America: the cheapest means - an aerosol - practically did not affect the noise level. The difference in the "before" and "after" indicators is comparable to the measurement error. It should be noted that Eltrans preparations are not lucky at all in this issue (see the article about "anti-rain"), but this is not someone's malicious intent, but just an unfortunate coincidence. Thick mastic "AvtoNOL" will color the weekend with new shades. It is inconvenient to use a brush under the car, and it is difficult to achieve an even coating out of habit. If you try, the result will be better than after using an aerosol. Although you need to have a very delicate ear to feel the difference.

But the PRIM Antishum material, which is applied with a primer gun, gives an effect - and it can be assessed not only with a sound level meter, but also by ear. The so-called evacuated microspheres with crumb rubber and other ingenious components significantly reduce the level of noise and vibration in the car. At a speed of 90 km / h, we managed to win almost 4 dBA, that is, the car became quieter by almost two and a half times! The only downside is that it's expensive. Yes, and it is difficult to carry out such work on your own - you will have to turn to specialists.

Experienced, however, say that it is not necessary to go to a car dealership. Like, any garage craftsman will carry out such work for less money - pistols and lifts are not a wonder today, but the drug can be obtained. Let's not argue with that. In any case, the result is important: it is possible to fight harmful "bacilli"! And in addition to reducing the noise level, you will find a bonus in the form of anti-gravel and anti-corrosion protection of the body, as well as its thermal insulation.

In general, do not make noise!

WHAT IS DECIBEL

A decibel (dB) is a dimensionless quantity used to express the ratio of the measured value and the reference value on a logarithmic scale. It is used when measuring values ​​that vary over a wide range: it is much easier to operate with small numbers like 20, 30 or 100 than ratios of 100, 1000 or 10,000,000,000.

Most loud noise differs from the quietest that our ears can catch by 130 dB (10,000,000,000,000 times). The rustle of leaves is about 15 dB, an office with employees is about 60 dB, a motorcycle is about 85 dB, and a traumatic threshold is about 160 dB.

The sensitivity of the ear is highly dependent on the frequency of the sound. Therefore, the so-called A-correction of the sound pressure level is introduced in sound level meters, which brings the measurement results closer to real human sensations. This corrected noise level is also measured in decibels and is referred to as dBA.

A difference of 3 dBA means that the measured value is twice the base value. In the old days, it was fashionable to compare the "Seagull" with the "Muscovites": cool limousine was quieter than a runabout by about 6 dBA!

Against the background of a running engine, the noise emitted by the cooling system is sometimes quite noticeable. To solve this problem, install electric fans that will rotate at a frequency that does not exceed 3500 rpm, which is quite low. Do not forget about the installation of radiator supports in order to decouple the electric motor from the car body. If you do not do this, then getting rid of one noise, another will appear.

Remember that all the measures taken to reduce engine noise will not bring the desired effect if you do not complete soundproofing engine compartment. After all, the sound in a closed space begins to be reflected from the walls and intensify, so the noise will only increase.
