The GAZelle-Business 4x4 all-wheel drive van is a unique creation of the Russian automobile industry. First of all, because this car has practically no competitors in our market. Imported counterparts with a 4x4 wheel formula are much more expensive and do not pull on the title of a budget van. And the Ulyanovsk “loaf”, although it will give odds to any SUV, is still morally outdated, and it is not entirely correct to compare it with the GAZelle 4x4. Therefore, when the question of finding an all-wheel drive “rival” arose before the test of the “Nizhny Novgorod”, it turned out that the only competitor of the GAZelle was its younger brother, the Sobol-Business 4x4 van.

The first thing that catches your eye when examining Nizhny Novgorod vans with the prefix "business" is the good build quality of serial cars. Improvements can be noticed even when approaching the car. If earlier the gaps between the wings, hood, headlights or bumper “danced” as they wanted, and from different sides of the car they could differ by almost a centimeter, now the quality of fitting parts has noticeably improved. The gaps have become even and neat, which makes the cars look "tight". The design of the sliding door has also been improved, now it closes easily and tightly, leaving no gaps. Such precision adorns Gorky's vans even more than the updated design.

When creating a line of "business" cars, Gorky designers abandoned some domestic components and assemblies in favor of more expensive imported analogues. There are so many changes that it is necessary to tell about them in more detail. The first "victim" was the steering. In the basic configuration, all business cars are now equipped with ZF hydraulic boosters. This means that you can forget Borisov's "hydraulics" like a nightmare, the quality of which caused a lot of criticism. The interior of the GAZelle has also noticeably changed (it almost does not differ from the “sable” one). The new dashboard designed by EDAG looks pretty. Plastic in two colors is pleasant to the touch. The quality of finishing materials was brought up to Korean, which is an absolute plus in the case of Nizhny Novgorod vans. The instrument cluster with silver “wells” is concise, but the readings are easy to read both in daylight and at night - the driver has the ability to adjust the intensity of the instrument illumination. The new steering wheel has a comfortable grip and is equipped with radio control buttons. Yes, yes, I was not mistaken. In the basic configuration, the vans are equipped with an MP3 player with a USB input for a flash drive. This is an attraction of unprecedented generosity! Not to mention heated mirrors.

The seven-seat passenger-and-freight Sobol is equipped with an additional stove for second-row passengers. Now frosts are not terrible. In summer, you can create a comfortable microclimate at the back with the help of sliding windows and an additional sunroof.

Now for the disadvantages. They are not so significant, but the overall positive impression is somewhat blurred. First of all, the fragility of some details is surprising. For example, retractable cup holders are assembled from small plastic parts that shatter on the first use. In our test, the cup holder did not hold up well with a half-litre bottle of water and broke within a few hours. It's a shame? Certainly.

The situation is similar with the ashtray. It is made rather for show and in the open position is completely non-functional. Cigarette butts will simply fall out on the go. A trifle, but unpleasant.

The passenger sofa also remained unchanged. The back of the sofa is not adjustable and is located almost vertically. On a long journey, this creates a lot of inconvenience. And if the driver's seat can be called comfortable, then you will not envy fellow travelers. Moreover, part of the passenger legroom is eaten up by archaic downshift levers and differential locks. Not only are they inconvenient to use, they also interfere with the second passenger.

We studied the theory, looked around in the cabin, it's time to go free. Let me remind you that in our test vans with permanent all-wheel drive "Gazelle" GAZ-27057-288 and "Sobol" GAZ-27527-298. And if during the initial inspection these cars are almost the same, then in motion the “all-wheel drive” vehicles differ significantly, even though both cars have a similar gross weight (“GAZelle-Business” is only 30 kg lighter) and are equipped with the same UMZ-4216 motors.

The petrol engine develops 107 hp. For a dynamic ride on a rear-wheel drive GAZelle, it is quite enough, but in the version with a 4x4 wheel formula, things are different. Four-wheel drive simply eats up part of the power, the GAZelle 4x4 accelerates slowly and forcefully. The motor has to be turned to the “red zone” and only then switched. The rumble of the transmission, which appears already at a speed of 40-50 km / h, constantly annoys. In general, on the pavement, the permanent all-wheel drive of the GAZelle completely discredited itself. In motion, I frankly did not like the car, and only the old transmission is to blame for this.

In Sobol, the load on the all-wheel drive system is also high, but the car obediently responds to pressing the gas pedal, the rumble of bridges and transfer case appears only after 80 km / h - for an unrolled domestic all-wheel drive, this is a good result. The motor spins easily up to 4000 rpm, if desired, you can go crazy on the Sobol. The payload of a van with single tires is only 800 kg, so we can say with confidence that the power of the Euro 3 UMZ-4216 engine is quite enough for the Sobol.

There are other significant differences between the Nizhny Novgorod "brothers". Despite the four-wheel drive, the Sobol retained a large turning angle of the front wheels and it is convenient to maneuver on it, which cannot be said about the GAZelle 4x4, which has a turning circle of 15 m versus 12 m for the Sobol. At the same time, the wheelbase of the latter is only 14 cm shorter.

But it's on asphalt. Outside public roads, the GAZelle has somewhat rehabilitated and even surpassed the Sobol. Thanks to the dual rear tires, the GAZelle does not dig in loose sand, which often happens with the Sobol.

The Ulyanovsk motor turned out to be quite “elastic”, it pulls well in low gears. The “gas” pedal is informative, and with the differential lock on, you can easily move “in tightness”. The gearbox performed well, the new synchronizers turned out to be in the yard. Now downshifts are easy, which was a whole problem on old modifications of Nizhny Novgorod cars.

The levers for engaging the differential lock and downshift, on the contrary, are worthy of a separate reproach. As we said above, they do not fit into the interior of Nizhny Novgorod trucks in any way. In addition, working with them is a torment. The lock turns on only the third time, and turns off even worse. Sometimes it “bites” so that you have to rock the car forward / backward in order to “knock out” the lever. A young driver, unfamiliar with domestic "handouts" a la UAZ, may not be able to cope with such a task.

The clearance of the "Nizhny Novgorod" is not enough. According to official data, it is 205 mm for Sobol, and 190 mm for GAZelle. But our measurements showed a result of about 180–190 mm for both cars. This is not enough for real off-road, GAZelle and Sobol are designed for autumn slush and snow-covered roads.



For revision

Gorky small-tonnage vehicles as a whole make a good impression. Sensible improvements and changes in the design allow us to hope for a bright future for "gas" vans. I liked the torquey engine and the modified gearbox.

Another question is the versions of the GAZelle and Sobol with a 4x4 wheel arrangement. Permanent four-wheel drive noticeably interferes with the machines to work. They became heavier and more clumsy. The constant hum of the transmission is annoying. And the patency of small-tonnage vehicles is not impressive. Perhaps it's time to abandon the old "Soviet" transfer case and look for a worthy import replacement. In the meantime, it is better to be content with the rear-wheel drive versions of the GAZelle and Sobol.
