Today we can choose from almost three dozen such machines. And perhaps the most peculiar of them - "Discovery". There is definitely no other like it!

From the very beginning - and the car made its debut almost a quarter of a century ago, in September 1989 - Discovery was conceived as more affordable alternative pathos "Range Rover". In 1998, in his second generation, he surprised the world with a whole arsenal of tools incorporated into his design, the meaning of which was to ensure that success on the road was minimally dependent on the driver's qualifications. Needless to say, the car turned out interesting. However, true to national traditions, the British made it too original, rewarding it with a whole scattering of features. For example, you had to squeeze through narrow doors into a luxuriously decorated salon, the driver propped up the side window with his elbow, and climbing onto the sofa, you risked hitting the top of your head on the lintel and rested your knees on the back of the front seat.

Only eight years ago, in the third edition, "Disco" came close to its luxurious relative, getting rid of many of the above "cute things" that have always been the originality of English cars, for which some people love them, while others cannot stand them. It has become larger, more solid, the noble finish has adorned the spacious and comfortable lounge. Thanks to independent suspension, which replaced continuous beam bridges, a pair of new, powerful and high-torque engines, the largest Land Rover began to drive on asphalt with pleasure. And yet, he did not lose a bit of British originality - blind-eyed instruments, uncomfortable seat adjustment knobs, and the rear window literally attracting dirt ...

Of course, each new generation of Land Rover was significantly more expensive than the previous one. So when in the fall of 2009 the Discovery-4 saw the light with two new engines and really luxurious salon, from the former availability, albeit relative, only memories remained. Accordingly, the sales of "Disco" in Russia decreased by as much as three times.

What is the price?

In 2008, "Disco-3" was given for 1.5 million rubles, for the "fourth" year later they asked for 400 thousand more. And now the price race continues. The car went up in price last year, and has increased in price since this spring. Today admission ticket to the club of owners of "Disco" costs from 1,999,000 rubles. Yes, even the basic version of S cannot be called austere: a 190-horsepower diesel engine, an “automatic”, light alloy wheels, a radio tape recorder, climate control, air suspension and an autonomous pre-heater.

However, “xenon”, leather, parking sensors, all kinds of heating and other attributes of “Dolce Vita” in this version cannot be obtained even for a surcharge. Imagine, you bought an expensive house in a pine forest near Moscow near a pond, and inside it is finished plastic panels co construction market! Meanwhile, the SE version is as expensive as half a million! I must admit, in terms of equipment, this is a car of a completely different order. In his arsenal leather interior, parking sensors, cruise control, 7-inch touch screen on the front panel, heated all seats, a photochromic mirror and an abundance of lighting in the cabin, including legroom and door handles. And a stereo system with a total power of 380 W can entertain your entire elite village. In addition, SE allows you to order any of more than fifty options. In this list you will find not at all useless for a practical SUV active rear differential and roof rails.

Considering that the Discovery is not a car that is bought with the last money, it is hardly worth dropping below the SE. We consider it to be optimal. Moreover, only it opens up the opportunity to get the most suitable, in our opinion, 3-liter 245-horsepower diesel engine. Yes, he is a whole 161 thousand rubles. more expensive than the base one, but by the standards of prices of an initially expensive brand, this is by no means an exorbitant premium. In addition, looking ahead, I must say that the pleasure is worth it.

The HSE version for an additional 171 thousand offers front parking sensors, "xenon", electric front seats and steering wheel, a sofa that will fold in a proportion not 40/60, but more practical - 35/30/35. If you only need individual elements of this set, it is more profitable to supplement SE with them. But all together is naturally cheaper at HSE.

Exclusively in the top version, you can order a surround view system and keyless entry, a TV, and even more expensive leather to decorate not only chairs and doors, but also the front panel. The price tag in this case is close to three million. But that's not all: the 5.0HSE version starts at 3,059,000. For Disco, the gasoline V8 is a prestige engine, in total mass such cars make up only a few percent of sales, and even more so, spending is not particularly considered here.

As you can see, the price tag of even the optimal "Disco" bites - and how! It is lower than that of the Mercedes-Benz-ML, but higher than the Prado and Tuareg. Also note that dealers are not averse to using your generosity. Others in February, when ordering a car in 2012 for the optimal 3.0SE, asked from 2,753,000 rubles. - 105 thousand more than the price recommended by the representative office. And in order to keep the buyer, who noticed the catch, they gave a discount, as they say, from the "cloak".

The appearance of "Disco" is his undoubted strong point. It is large and solid, but by no means pretentious, not emphatically brutal, but rather restrainedly aristocratic. Headlights and rear lights bristled with fireworks of LEDs, and the barely changed front fenders flaunt matte air intake inserts. Now it looks more like a Range Rover than ever before.

Huge (at least 18 inches) wheels, short overhangs, bumpers and sills, trimmed with unpainted solid plastic, feigned solidity of a high landing - it’s not scary to go into reconnaissance with this, and you can pass for your own on an expensive party. The car not only seems, but is actually one of the tallest among the universal off-road vehicles. Even without roof rails, she is 1.89 m tall in the normal air suspension position.

True, after the very first kilometers of the way, one of the “cute British things” nevertheless shows through - like a birthmark, without which a Land Rover is not a Land Rover. Korma still attracts dirt to itself like a magnet, so visiting car washes can become almost a daily routine. The impressive height also predetermined another feature: it is very difficult for obese people to climb into the cabin. The task could be facilitated by grippy handles on the front and center pillars, which have long been on many off-road vehicles. But there are none on Disco.

The sofa is not very comfortable either. It's spacious enough for three adults, and there's even more headroom than the front. However, the pillow is almost flat, a bit low and almost horizontal, and the back cannot be adjusted in terms of the angle of inclination. If the seats are trimmed in leather, then in long road from such a slippery throne one inevitably slips.

But unexpectedly pleased with the "gallery". "Disco" is perhaps the only SUV where a couple of heroes 190 cm tall can travel in the third row. It’s a pity that third-row seats are not cheap on their own, and they are also sold only with additional climate control - be kind enough to lay out 88,500 rubles. Fortunately, you won’t have to pay extra for heating the sofa, individual cup holders and ceiling lights, air ducts with adjustable deflectors in the 7-seater SE.

We load suitcases

This elite stallion can be turned into a draft horse for transporting as many as 2.5 cubic meters of all sorts of things. The sofa is transformed easily and simply: pull the lever - the back is folded, then pull the ribbon under the pillow and lower the resulting “sandwich” lower and forward. By doing this procedure with all the seats except the front ones, you will create a polygon 1.9 by 1.1 meters, which can also be used as a double bed.

However, remember that the feed will be permanently dirty. Considering that the floor of the car is high and the trunk is deep, it is very difficult not to get your clothes dirty when loading / unloading. The task, however, is a little easier if you make the Disco sit down: the air suspension allows you to lower the floor by 55 mm.

Behind the wheel

The lower level of pneumatics should also be used to enter the salon. After all, even crouched to the ground "Disco" remains high. The principle “I look farthest” is just about the Disco driver. At the same time, it is very comfortable to sit here: the elbows rest against the correct armrests, and in the back and hips you feel unobtrusive, but confident support. The design of the chair is well thought out and is characterized by an abundance and breadth of adjustments.

And the “throne room”, in general, corresponds. You can be a little blind and suffer from a chronic runny nose, but this aroma - this intoxicating spirit of soft, thick, noble and, of course, expensive leather, exuded not only by armchairs, but also by door trim, will impress anyone. Yes, gentlemen, quite another matter! Do not misunderstand: the interior of the previous "Disco" was very good. Only now it has a real luster. This is how a smoking pipe made of real Mediterranean briar shines, on which, after finishing polishing, a layer of refractory carnauba wax was applied! The color and dressing of the skin, the materials of the various inserts must be specified when ordering. At the same time, a wide tunnel between the chairs will in any case flaunt rich decoration. The visual devices with inscriptions in white on black, and the large screen of the Russian-language on-board computer will surely please the eye.

If you opted for the SE version or older, you'll also get a touchscreen display, which is conveniently implanted into the center console between the round air duct deflectors. Moreover, an impressive abundance of service functions practically does not complicate management - whether it be manipulations with a radio tape recorder, a TV, a quintet of all-round cameras, intelligent navigation or a 3-zone “climate”. Yes, and most of the tips electronics gives out in Russian.

It is a pity, however, that even on the most expensive versions, the front panel creaks when pressed lightly. There is still more plastic under the skin here than in the best modern machines claiming a premium. However, "Land Rovers" are all like that - a real fan of "Disco" will have to come to terms with this.

Moreover, the car has oddities more serious. There is a lot of legroom here. However, if the driver's shoes are larger than size 43, then by transferring your foot from the brake to the gas, you risk touching the ledge under the steering wheel. The front panel has two convenient glove boxes lined with velvet on the inside. But for some reason they are devoid of internal illumination. To find out the frequency of the radio station, you will have to turn off the navigation - otherwise the radio is not displayed on any screen. By pulling the right steering column lever, turn on not the front washer, but the rear one. The front button is at the end of the switch. And to fold the mirrors, you need to simultaneously press the left and right electric control buttons. Oh those cute little things...

On the roads…

However, it is easier to get used to them the more you drive Disco. A more pleasant off-road vehicle is still to be found! Any of the diesels strikes with the quietest work. Since last year, all versions have been sold with us only with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which nullifies the sin characteristic of any turbodiesel - unnecessary harshness when going from idle to effective turbine speed. At the same time, the base 2.7-liter diesel accelerates the Disco quite confidently and more smoothly than you expect. You should not expect special fanaticism from him, even if you mercilessly stomp the gas pedal - a certain heaviness when picking up speed accompanies the car from the first meters of the path. And if on the highway, without lowering the tachometer needle below 2000 rpm, you can achieve well-known agility from Disco, then in the city it is harmonious only in the hands of a leisurely driver. Acceleration of almost 13 s to a hundred is good for a pickup truck, but not for a jeep with a claim to premium.

With a 3-liter diesel engine, Disco has a much more frisky disposition. The increase in power here is not so great, but the torque is almost one and a half times more. Even from 140 km/h the car rushes forward with inspiring enthusiasm. You understand that 180 km / h is forcibly limited by electronics. And the roar of such a motor with increasing speed becomes much more intense and aggressive. But this rage is always under control, if you want to sedately crawl with everyone together in the general stream, you just need to stroke the gas pedal.

After such a wonderful diesel, the advantages of an even more powerful petrol version become much less obvious. True, if diesels are quiet, then the gasoline V8 is almost silent! At least at idle closed windows you need to listen very carefully to understand if the motor is working. And, of course, the nameplate V8, it's like a general's lamp, peeking out from under the front overcoat.

Any "Disco" stands on a straight line very confidently. And in corners, the car remains clear: it rolls as expected and confidently keeps on an arc. The air suspension quickly dampens any vibrations and perfectly isolates the body from impacts even on serious potholes. On the steering wheel, too, does not present any road surprises. In terms of comfort in motion, the Discovery is comparable to the best of its competitors. And in terms of the energy intensity of the suspension, it follows the leader in this discipline, the Mercedes-Benz-GL, and ahead of the Tuareg.

But in terms of fuel consumption, all Discoveries are different. With a petrol V8, you will have to count on 20-30 liters, depending on traffic jams and driving style. Of the diesels, it is more economical, and more powerful. On a free highway, I easily managed to trample down its consumption of only 8.7 liters per hundred - an excellent result for a 2.5-ton colossus. The base one, in the same unhurried modes, eats up almost 2 liters more. Only if you press the gas heartily, both swallow an average of 15-17 liters.

…and without them

A high body, built on an integrated frame, immediately inspires confidence - Disco can do a lot on off-road. Ground clearance of 240 mm is already good. The air suspension can lower it by 55 mm, and raise it above the ground up to 290 mm before off-roading. At the same time, all the giblets under the bottom do not hang below the thresholds, so it is quite difficult to damage them. And rushing along the primer generously covered with snow, I almost paid for my recklessness.

At the beginning of the country road swept by the March blizzard, the snow was up to the hub, but after a couple of hundred meters the bumper worked like a bulldozer knife. Moreover, the snow crust has become denser. As a result, "Disco" lifted clouds of snow into the air and froze. However, it was not necessary to measure the snowdrifts with our feet - the Terrain Rispons and the air suspension helped out.

With the smartest electronic-mechanical control system for all-wheel drive, differential locks and torque supply to the wheels, the driver who does not even have the slightest idea about off-road driving will feel like a skilled jeeper. In total there are 4 modes for different type ground: asphalt, snow/gravel/grass, sand and stones. You can select them with a grip washer on the central tunnel. On the screen on-board computer the machine gives prompts in Russian. Do not neglect the powerful (2.93: 1) downshift, it helps a lot when driving in tension.

To wrest "Disco" from captivity, I used the "Snow" mode and another tricky trick, which I would not have known about without reading the instructions. This method is useful when, with a clearance of 29 cm, the car still sits on its belly. You need to hold the button for increasing the clearance for more than three seconds and press the brake pedal several times, and the Disco will rise another 20 mm. Ground clearance 31 cm is a record for universal off-road vehicles.

By the standards of machines devoid of special off-road training, the Land Rover's capabilities are impressive. A permanent four-wheel drive and more durable than any crossover suspension allows you to count on enviable durability even with frequent off-road tests. Just remember that good jeep data is a double-edged sword. Believing that the machine can do a lot, the owners sometimes go where not every tractor will pass.

Safety

Discovery-4 did not participate in the EuroNCAP tests, but the third one, structurally similar to it, earned 31 points and four stars there three years ago. The lack of knee airbags and the increased load on the driver's chest during a frontal impact prevented the car from becoming an honors student.

The overall level of equipment with passive safety equipment in the current car is more than worthy. All versions are equipped with front, side and window cushions for all three rows.
