The stylish two-door sports car Chrysler Crossfire was first shown as a concept in 2001, and its production version debuted in 2003. At one time, the Chrysler Crossfire became a cult car, earning respect and recognition from many, although many motorists brought down a flurry of their criticism on it.

The name "Crossfire" was given to the car because of the two lines running from each side of the model and intersecting on the cover of the base. In addition, during the years of the Crossfire, Daimler-Benz and Chrysler worked closely together, resulting in a car that was called the "crossfire".

The Chrysler Crossfire was based on the chassis from the first-generation Mercedes SLK roadster with the R170 body index. Designer Andrew Dyson was able to give the car the characteristic features of American cars, but the wheelbase, engines, transmissions and other technical stuffing of the model are completely borrowed from Mercedes.

Inside and outside

The exterior of the stylish Chrysler Crossfire makes it conspicuous and recognizable. The rear wheels of the model are larger than the front ones, and the cab is shifted back, which contributes to the visual increase in the hood.

The body of the Chrysler Crossfire is made in rounded shapes, and the air intakes located on the front fenders, the exhaust pipes located in the center of the body, the ribs on the hood and the wide rear fenders give the coupe a sporty look.

The overall length of the model is 4,059 mm (the size of the wheelbase is 2,400), the width is 1,756, and the height is 1,308.

The attractiveness of the Chrysler Crossfire interior somewhat spoils the abundance of plastic. On the other hand, the presence of chrome-plated parts, perfectly combined with each other, creates its own style, although the instrument panel is reminiscent of the original SLK.

Specifications

The sports car is driven by a 3.2-liter six-cylinder petrol engine with 218 hp. (310 Nm). It is aggregated in tandem with a 6-speed manual, or with a 5-band automatic. The Chrysler Crossfire coupe spends 6.5 seconds to accelerate from standstill to hundreds (version with manual transmission), and the maximum speed is limited to 250 km / h.

In 2005, the car got a "charged" modification of the SRT-6, under the hood of which there is a turbocharged version of the 3.2-liter "six" from AMG. Such an engine produces 335 "horses" (420 Nm) and is combined exclusively in tandem with a machine gun. Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

The production of the model ceased in 2008, so today you can buy a Chrysler Crossfire only in the secondary market, where the price for it varies from $ 20,000 to $ 30,000, depending on the modification, condition and year of manufacture. In Russia, this model can be purchased for an average amount of 500,000 to 1,000,000 rubles.

The Chrysler Crossfire concept car debuted at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show. The car made a strong impression on the public, which served as the immediate decision of the management to launch the car in a series as soon as possible. It took the company two years to develop a production model. The premiere of the Chrysler Crossfire took place in the summer of 2003. The compact sports coupe received a neo-retro design. The car consists of 60% of new components and assemblies. The rest of the details the developers borrowed from various models of Mercedes-Benz. The car is equipped with only one engine - a 3.2-liter unit that develops 215 horsepower. With it, the coupe reaches 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds. The Chrysler Crossfire is equipped with a retractable rear spoiler that activates at 92 km/h. In 2004, at the motor show in Detroit, the company showed a roadster, the basis for which was a serial coupe. The main difference between the novelty and the original Crossfire was the automatically retractable roof. The soft top of the roadster can be folded in 22 seconds. In technical terms, the car repeats the compartment version and is equipped with a similar 3.2-liter engine.

In 2004, a year after the release of the Chrysler Crossfire coupe, the Chrysler Crossfire Roadster was introduced to the public with a soft-top sports convertible. Built on the R170 platform, like the Mercedes-Benz SLK320, it differed little from the base model. To maintain the rigidity inherent in the coupe, the Roadster's structure was strengthened, due to which the car gained 36 kg in weight. Roof Chrysler Crossfire Roadster The 3-layer awning on a metal frame folds entirely into the trunk, after which there is not much free space of just 104 liters. In turn, with the top up, the luggage compartment of the Roadster is 190 liters. Like the Chrysler Crossfire coupe, the roadster was produced with a 3.2-liter engine, which developed 215 hp in the atmospheric version, and 335 hp equipped with a compressor. In addition to the 215-horsepower engine, 2 gearboxes were offered, a 5-speed automatic transmission and a 5-speed manual. Chrysler Crossfire Roadster with a higher power unit was equipped with a 5-speed "automatic". In conclusion, it must be said that the Chrysler Crossfire model lasted until 2007, when both the coupe and the roadster were discontinued.

Reviews from Chrysler Crossfire owners

Chrysler Crossfire 2005

I've owned it for almost a year and I'm happy with it. I took a Chrysler Crossfire with a mileage of about 50 thousand km. For 10 thousand km of operation, there were almost no problems, replacing the rubber bands of the valve covers (rubber band 600 rubles plus work 500 rubles) and that's it. I want to dispel the myth about the problem with spare parts, everything is available. The base is from the Mercedes S-class, therefore, spare parts are available. There is one minus, solved by increasing the volume of the radio - this is the plastic of the cabin. The plastic is of poor quality, as in a domestic car, although it looks normal, but it creaks. Acoustics are normal. The suspension is firm but not stiff. The Chrysler Crossfire is a fantastic eye-catcher that turns heads. Elegantly tuned exhaust sound (factory). Acceleration is impressive, pressing into the seat. The "chip" with the spoiler is a nice little thing (it crawls out at a speed of about 100 km/h and hides when the speed drops below 40 km/h, and is also controlled from a button). Conclusion: I believe that there is no such car that can bring so much driving pleasure, engine power, adrenaline, and having such an appearance, of course, cheaper than 20-25 thousand USD. Although a matter of taste of course. Someone on the "Focus" feels like Schumacher. Thank you for your attention.

Advantages : appearance. Exhaust sound. Reliability. Safety. Confused with Bentley. Engine power and driving pleasure.

Flaws : plastic is not happy. The impracticality of the car (2 seats).

Chrysler Crossfire 2005

At the moment I have driven about 500 miles, I live in Vyborg, there is not much to drive here, but the Chrysler Crossfire is just a pleasure to drive. Yes, she is tough, yes she is impractical (but I am 22 years old and the family is not planned in the near future). Yes, it's hard to find Mercedes part numbers that match those of the Chrysler Crossfire. Yes, new rear summer tires on 19th wheels will cost 10 thousand per wheel. Yes, for the winter I will most likely put 17 wheels, and they will look ugly. Yes, I still need repairs for 30 thousand. Yes, we need to do something with the tax. Yes, if it is the same winter, the car will be in the garage. Yes, I owe about 200 thousand rubles now. And I don't know yet how to give them away. But every time I drive this car, I enjoy it. People turn around, drivers see everyone off with their eyes, the consumption is around 14 in the city, sometimes I press down on the “straight lines”. A couple of times they tried to compete with me on the "direct" BMW 5, X5, Celica and a couple of cars. This they did about 100 meters. Further without options for them. The car is very tenacious and nimble, it enters into turns like a glove, the turning radius is scanty. There is no shock at the prices of spare parts yet. The masters who specialize in Mercedes said that they would service my Chrysler Crossfire without any problems. In general, while the machine is extremely positive emotions.

Advantages : appearance. Controllability. Dynamics.

Flaws : impractical.

Chrysler Crossfire 2005

I'll tell you briefly about your car. Exterior: Muscular body with clear lines of wings and "gills" that give aggressiveness to the image. Huge hood, warning of the presence of an impressive motor. The windshield frame mimics the look of a convertible. A sloping roofline, a graceful “fin” passing through the entire body, different-wide alloy wheels and, of course, a dual exhaust in the center of the bumper. The Chrysler Crossfire is great in my opinion. Interior: Many are not flattering about the quality of the cabin. I partly agree with this opinion. I will say one thing: everything is known in comparison. Compared to the Mercedes S-Class, Chrysler certainly loses. But in comparison with the same Nissan 350Z, or Infiniti G 35, Chrysler Crossfire looks quite decent. The plastic is soft, the leather is resistant to abrasion, there are aluminum elements, the control buttons are intuitively located and harmoniously fit into the interior. I didn’t hear any creaks in the cabin even in 30-degree frosts. The clearance of this car is respectable - worthy of 150 mm. Several times I did not slow down on the “recumbent”, I took it by storm - to my great surprise, the front bumper did not even touch the asphalt. Engine: V-shaped "six", a working volume of 3.2 liters, 3 valves per cylinder, distributed injection, a separate coil for each cylinder. The Chrysler Crossfire has a chain engine and, with proper handling, can run a million. Do not listen to those who write that the car does not eat oil at all. It's a lie. Oil consumption in the "gas to the floor" mode is 200-250 grams per 1000 km. Tiptronic transmission, very reliable and smooth. There is a very useful winter mode. I can also notice the ESP system, which very clearly monitors and blocks slipping wheels (this system has the ability to manually turn off - you can perfectly burn the rubber at a traffic light). Suspension: moderately hard, stable. It does not roll in corners, enters into turns clearly, as if on rails. The only, but a huge minus of this car is a large turning radius. Wrong wheel angle. Well, let's not talk about sad things. In general, the car is excellent. What is the breathtaking roar of the exhaust and an active spoiler, which automatically extends at speeds over 110 km / h. Machine for enjoyment. Good luck to everyone on the road.

Advantages : design. Charisma. Driving qualities.

Flaws : turning radius.

Chrysler Crossfire 2004

I've been driving a Chrysler Crossfire for 4 months now. I still don't know if I like this car. Uncomfortable car, with mediocre handling. Absolutely not sporty. Brakes for 4 minus. Power - I have 224 hp. I have enough. The only tactile thing that provokes you to press is the brushed aluminum handle of the automatic transmission selector. Although driving in the city at night can be interesting. The nice thing is that the Chrysler Crossfire is getting attention. They peer at the nameplates for a long time (it is necessary to replace them), and then you read your lips: “ah, this is a Chrysler.” The rut is very noticeable. This was not the case with winter tires. Very soft discs. Noise isolation is terrible. Salon is average. He began to creak and tinkle a little somewhere quietly. Acts on the nerves. Landing on 4. Parktronic is a convenient thing, given the poor visibility and the peculiarity of the mirrors to bring everything closer (more than on other cars). You sneak back like a first-grader, get out of the car, and behind the distance is another meter. It is a pity that on my Chinese parking sensors, carefully installed by one of the previous owners, the block burned out, and it does not work for me. We must change. It seems to everyone that this car is nonsense to drive. She is killed very quickly. Then they put Chinese spare parts in the suspension, and cheap Chinese belts and oil in the box never change. Although the box is good, the clutches on it also burn well. Fables about the fact that the oil is eternal - utter nonsense. It should be changed every 40 thousand preferably. Along with oil in the cardan. My friend and I bought a car almost in one month. I'm a black Chrysler Crossfire, she's white. Her suspension was broken tightly, the front wheel had already gone back, the anthers hung in a fringe. Repair of everything with the collapse of the gathering and replacement of consumables, oils and other things came out to her in 75 thousand. And she bought it for 500. My car had a normal suspension, but the oil in the box and cardan, as in the engine, was pitch black. Plus body problems. In good condition, cars really start after 600 thousand. Know it. I'm also slowly investing money and doing the car. The seat heaters don't work for both of us. Apparently these threads are damaged.

Advantages : interesting. A small tax with sane dynamics. There are enough spare parts available. The engine is strong. Enough for a long time.

Flaws : different size wheels. The box does not withstand aggressive driving conditions. Squeaky interior and plastic.

Chrysler Crossfire 2005

Of the main problems, Chrysler Crossfire encountered the fact that the head unit did not read MP3 files and did not catch radio frequencies greater than 100 MHz, but solved this by replacing it with a multimedia system. In general, the standard music of the Chrysler Crossfire is very good: 2 speakers in the doors plus subwoofers with a powerful standard amplifier under each seat. Rubber brought from Finland for 140 euros for the "cylinder". There were no problems except for the replacement of consumables, the mileage was about 65 thousand miles. Original. The motor almost does not eat oil, the box is “indestructible”. The suspension does not break through the pits and is very elastic. Due to the wide rear wheels, the Chrysler Crossfire goes through bumps and rails much better. Good lensed light. The spoiler extends itself after 85 km / h, and there is also a button for forced spoiler adjustment. There is a button to turn off the stability control, for those who like to start the car into a skid. Visibility from the cabin is good. Good plastic, does not crunch, although it looks like an amateur, but you can always sheathe it with leather. There are almost no overhangs under the bumpers, so it doesn’t cling to speed bumps or big bumps in the road, you can even climb small curbs. Ground clearance is greater than many city cars. Consumption depends on the driving style, but on average the highway is 9-11.5 liters, the city is 11.5-17 liters (spotted). But how to ride. You can fill in 92 gasoline, but I only operate on the 95th. Acceleration is very pleasing, the machine has the ability to manually control gears. Rear wheel drive like a Mercedes. There is enough space, a friend with a height of 188 cm has been driving the same device for the second year. Due to the fact that the car is 2-seater, the trunk is the largest in its class. I transported 2 girls there at once. By the way, the girls really like this car. Valet parking at clubs and restaurants always try to put the car closer to the entrance. There are still a few such cars in St. Petersburg, and therefore everyone often pays attention on the streets. In the summer I use the car every day, for work I often have to travel around the city and the region, so I can say with confidence that the car is comfortable and adapted for our roads.

Advantages : comfort. Design. Attracts attention. Powerful motor. Reliability.

Flaws : head unit.

History of creation

This model is the first sports car of the American company, if you do not take into account the cars that came out under the Dodge brand, which for a long time was a division of Chrysler. However, you can't call the Crossfire an American either. The car was created by the Daimler-Benz concern, so the design is based on the German Mercedes SLK of the first generation.

The Crossfire concept was shown at the 2001 Detroit Motor Show. The two-seater sports coupe entered the series two years later. And a year later, Chrysler launched the Crossfire in a roadster modification, with a fabric roof with an electric drive. Cars were made in Germany.

The exterior design of the Crossfire is made in a progressive neo-retro style. Eric Stoddart worked on it, on account of which such models as the 2003 Dodge Viper and STR-4, Chrysler Sebring and Pacicfica, as well as the 2007 Hyundai Elantra. The original Crossfire spine - a stamped line on the hood and trunk - visually divides the roadster into two parts. This trend can also be seen in the cabin: the passenger and driver seats are separated by a central tunnel, with a silver plastic insert…..

Translated from English, the name means "crossfire". The name has at least two meanings. The first refers to the body design with characteristic lines on the sides. In addition, the name reflects the focus of the model on two markets - American and European. At the same time, Chrysler produced a model of this class for the first time and immediately sought to occupy a niche in a market dominated by the Audi TT and the J35 sports coupe from Infiniti.

Technical features

The car is equipped with a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual. At the same time, the automatic transmission is more economical in terms of fuel consumption. This is due to different gear ratios - the variant with mechanics is designed for efficient acceleration, so a car with manual shifting consumes more fuel.

The good handling of the car, which is not characteristic of most American sports cars, is largely due to the German suspension. At the front, the Crossfie has a double wishbone suspension from the SLK, and at the back there is a multi-link from the E-class (W120). Even the length of the wheelbase is identical to the Mercedes. In addition, the car got the power circuit from SLK - rear-wheel drive and front engine.

The main technical highlight of the model is an active spoiler. The same part is on the Porsche Carrera and Bugatti, which is a very flattering neighborhood for the Crossfaer. The spoiler comes out when the car accelerates to 90 km/h. This adds downforce to the car and improves handling.

Another feature of the coupe is the different diameter of the front and rear wheels - 18-inch front and 19-inch rear. It also improves handling.

Of particular note is the Crossfire audio system. The car is equipped with an Infinity Modulus speaker system with a six-channel amplifier with a power of 240 watts. The sound of the audio system is simply excellent.

One of the first owners of this car in Russia was the popular singer Timati.

It is noteworthy that there is only one cup holder in the car, and it is intended for the passenger. Obviously, this is a hint that while driving this car, the driver should not have a desire to drink coffee.

Differences from classmates

Unlike most sports cars of its time, which use rack and pinion steering systems, the Crossfire has a worm gear with a ball nut.

The Crossfire has a ground clearance of 15 centimeters, which is quite a lot for a sports car. Compared to the Audi TT, the American's ground clearance is two centimeters higher, which, given the bad Russian roads, is a definite advantage.

Distinguishes the car from most classmates and interior width, ceiling height and large legroom.
