They are all turbocharged gasoline engines with a dry sump lubrication system and are found only on the Macan. Although the base was a 3.6-liter “aspirated” from the Panamera. The base Macan S is powered by a 3.0-litre engine with a remarkably short stroke of just 69mm for a 96mm bore. I must say that the same engine, only more power(420 hp), installed on new Panamera S.

The Macan S delivers 340 hp and maximum torque of 460 Nm at just 1450 rpm. This engine sounds great: aggressively and crackling exhaust mumbling at idle and hoarsely roaring at maximum speed. What we also learned during the first driving comparison is the amazing fact that the Macan is more comfortable on the go than the Q5. The Audi crossover shakes a little tensely on small road bumps, and Porsche overcomes them in a smoother and rounder way. Moreover, the Macan also outperforms the Audi. Firstly, thanks to the air suspension, which allows you to increase the clearance and, accordingly, the geometric cross.

Secondly, thanks to all-wheel drive with a hard-locking inter-axle clutch and a more carefully tuned electronic simulation of inter-wheel locks. Engineers swear the transmission can send up to 100% of the torque to one of the Macan's wheels. The Audi Q5 lags behind in this regard, but not by much. But the Macan is still stable in turns and nimble in slow chicanes, and the steering is informative. It is significant that, unlike the same Q5, Macan, like all Porsches, does not offer to select the level of effort on the steering wheel with a button. Corporate approach!

When you ask engineers about the meaning of certain changes compared to the Q5, they often answer that they don’t really remember exactly how it was with Audi. For example, at the first show of Makan, the Germans convinced Nikita Gudkov that the power steering electric motor in Audi was mounted on a shaft, while for Porsche it was transferred to a rail. In fact, the electric motor has been on the “rail” for the second year already and in the Q5. The only mechanical difference is that they have reduced gear ratio- Macan's steering wheel is "sharper".

The Macan, like the Cayenne and the Panamera hatchback, is produced at the Leipzig plant, separate from the sports cars that are born in Stuttgart. Last year, 83,000 crossovers and 27,000 Panameras were produced here. The circulation of Makan will be 50,000 cars - already now there is an increase in the staff from 1150 to 2550 people. Almost all workers in the assembly shop are local youth.

I swapped Macan S for Macan Turbo a couple of times but never found any noticeable difference"on the steering wheel". Both are well balanced, with the exception that the Turbo sometimes slides a little more into the corner entry drift. So after all, you fly up to the bend faster.

Macan Turbo with Sport package The Chrono hits 100 in 4.6 seconds - faster than any Boxster or Cayman. Crazy dynamic! The engine is based on a cylinder block from a three-liter turbo engine, which is installed on a hatchback Porsche Panamera S (420 hp, 520 Nm). But, apart from the block, there is nothing in common, and the working volume is increased to 3.6 liters due to the larger piston stroke. A chic motor with an aggressive sound and fantastic traction from the bottom. For this, in fact, it was created. In terms of power (400 hp), it is inferior to the Panamerov one, but the torque is higher (550 Nm), and the peak is already reached at 1350 rpm!

On the roads common use The Macan Turbo is redundant - like Usain Bolt in the Interdistrict. No matter how you stroke the gas pedal, if the speed is slightly higher than idle, the car, as they say, vomits from under itself. And the seven-speed “robot” PDK (slightly redesigned S tronic from Audi) works harshly, not always smoothing out the shifts during a quiet ride.

I am for Macan S. In fact, it is also Turbo - under the hood is the same three-liter turbo engine from Panamera S, but not forced, but, on the contrary: its power is reduced to 340 hp. (boost pressure reduced from 1.3 to 1 bar). If the Macan S seems calm, then perhaps against the backdrop of the Turbo version. And in general, who may not have enough 5.4 s to 100 km / h?


Like any Porsche car, Macan can be equipped with the Porsche Torque Vestoring (PTV) Plus system with rear differential lock. But, unlike cars, here PTV helps not only on asphalt, slowing down the inner wheels to turn, but also off-road, blocking rear differential when slipping

Now it is difficult for me to come up with arguments in favor of Cayenne, which, by the way, cannot be distinguished from Makan from ten steps away. At least if you look in the forehead. And that's the problem. I remember how, in response to the storm that the owners of the 911 coupe of the 996 series raised due to the fact that the “cheap” Boxster received the same headlights, they had to go for an urgent restyling. Will the Cayenne owners be offended this time?

Of course, the Cayenne offers a little more room for passengers and luggage. But is it worth 800 thousand rubles of overpayment? For the base Macan S they ask for 2 million 550 thousand rubles. For many, this will be the first Porsche whose price tag can be studied not out of idle curiosity. For comparison: slightly more powerful crossover Audi SQ5 costs 50 thousand more. But in the standard equipment of Makanov for Russia - not only air suspension, but also "bi-xenon", Alcantara trim and dual zone climate control. It is no wonder that the Macan, before it even appeared at dealers, became in short supply - more than 600 applications were received, although our market for this year has a quota of only a thousand cars.

The stunning Macan Turbo is more than a million more expensive: from 3 million 690 thousand rubles. A diesel version, which has a three-liter turbo engine from Q5 installed under an aluminum hood, will not be available in Russia yet: an engine that meets Euro-6 standards needs to be adapted to environmental standards Euro 5. They promise to be done by the end of 2015.

I traveled on it too. The diesel Macan is, of course, much quieter. But it’s still a sin to complain about the dynamics, and as for fuel consumption, on the measured interval I kept within 9.5 l / 100 km against 12 liters for the S version and almost 16 liters for the Turbo. In addition, the Macan S Diesel is the first car in my memory with a heavy-fuel engine, behind the wheel of which it is difficult to understand not only by ear, but also by the tachometer: its needle easily rises above 5000 rpm. We need a Macan like this!

The capacity of the production line at the plant in Leipzig is designed for only 50,000 vehicles per year, which is almost half that for Cayenne crossovers. Of course, output can be increased, but the fact that the “big brother” brings more money to the company is holding back. And since I am not one of the beneficiaries of Porsche AG, I share the main conclusion without looking back: Porsche Macan is best crossover, and not only those that bear the Porsche brand.
