When the German concern BMW first released its “five” in 1999, it was significantly different from its counterparts from other manufacturers and opened up a new market segment. After more than a dozen years, the car has practically not changed - it's still the same crossover, the emphasis in which is on road performance and comfortable driving.

Test drive video:

First impression of the BMW X5

The first impression of the BMW x5 is created in the cabin. Here everything is done as it should be for a car of the corresponding class. Perfectly selected materials, conveniently located control elements, quite spacious.

Before turning the ignition key and starting the engine, the car must be set up for itself, but not always for the first time there are all the levers, buttons and switches that adjust the mirrors, steering wheel, seats, etc.

Turning the key, the car is pleasing to the ear - the cabin is as quiet as possible and no extraneous vibration is felt. Feeling the pedals with your feet and comfortably holding the steering wheel, you can smoothly press the gas and start moving.

Specifications of the young Bavarian

In Europe, BMW x5 is presented, as a rule , 3 liter turbocharged diesel engine with hybrid transmission. Engineers have long stated that the classic mechanical box in this series will no longer be found.

The BMW x5 is one of the most powerful SUVs in its class. A car weighing 2.2 tons and with a capacity of 235 liters. With. picks up speed quickly. Up to 100 km / h, it can accelerate in a short 7.9-8 seconds. Engine power is widely distributed over the rev range.

The car shows its peak power at the moment when the tachometer needle starts to go beyond 2000 rpm, so even at low speeds the car will respond perfectly to the pressed gas pedal and quickly pick up speed.

The X5 brakes respond well to the pedal and provide good stopping power - you do not have to worry that at high speed the car will not stop at the intended point. Gearbox - 6-speed, smooth shifting. Indecision can only be felt when the driver decides to set the heat and sharply press the gas.

There is a new electronic lever for shifting gears - but it is not very convenient. A significant drawback is that you can easily switch to neutral while driving. Plus, he looks pissed off. And let the manufacturer explain this with improved ergonomic qualities - it does not look convincing.

Ride and handling

Although the old BMW x5 felt great on almost any road - it lacked something. The new models ride even better on the road and feel much more confident. On any surface, the car runs confidently and smoothly - the old "roughness" and instability on the sand are gone - and this is even on the optional sports suspension.

To say that the new BMW X5 model is a real racing car is a slight exaggeration. It is hindered by a relatively large weight - 2.2 tons, and a height of 1.85 meters. However, the SUV is one of the best handling in its class, easily entering a series of corners at moderate speeds.

The engineers decided not to experiment and opted for double wishbones, thanks to which the car gained additional confidence and stability. It quickly responds to the signals given by the driver, smoothly passes turns, the behavior of the body is completely controlled. All this is complemented by the Adaptive Drive stability control system.

Despite the advantages, the new BMW X5 still has the "illness" of the old version - it is also not able to get as deep off-road as many of its rivals are able to do. The manufacturer has never hidden that the car is designed not to drive through deserts and swamps - but on classic road surfaces. And this is shown by the angular characteristics, which remained the same as the old model:

  • Departure angle - 23 degrees
  • Angle of attack - 25 degrees
  • Crossing angle of axes - 19 degrees

The crossover is able to overcome water obstacles up to 500 meters deep. The bottom of the car is flat, the exhaust pipe is hidden in a special tire, the car is also equipped with a downhill system.

As a conclusion

BMW x5 is a modern crossover, which is one of the best in its class in terms of convenience, comfort and reliability. But this is not quite an SUV, but more of an everyday "SUV" - steep slopes with difficult surfaces, heavily blurred mud and deep puddles are not intended for such a car.

otherwise HE will stop you:

Drive thirty kilometers and not spend a single drop of fuel - the offer, you see, is very tempting. And lately it does not seem frankly fantastic. There are enough cars that can move exclusively on electric traction. The fashion trend was picked up even by European manufacturers of premium cars.

Take BMW, for example. Recently, it has been offering its customers the BMW X5 xDrive 40e crossover (BMW X5 xDrive 40e), which is just capable of turning into a real electric car for three dozen kilometers.

Externally, the hybrid BMW X5 is indistinguishable from the usual X-fifth. So you won't be able to stand out from the crowd. The situation is the same inside - everything is familiar, everything is expensive, everything is tasteful. Only one additional button responsible for selecting the operating mode of the eDrive electric drive can tell you that you are not inside the most ordinary car.

On the move, when the large color screen displays, for example, fuel and energy consumption charts, the BMW X5 xDrive 40e will certainly be easier to recognize. But only the driver will see them.

Another small difference between a hybrid crossover and a regular one can be found in the trunk. If the diesel and gasoline versions of the BMW X5 have a volume of 650 liters, then the "hybrid" has a slightly smaller volume - exactly 500 liters. In order to accommodate the electric battery, the trunk floor had to be raised by three centimeters. And if you look into the underground, then there will be no doubt at all. In a special niche there is a thick cable that allows you to charge from a regular household network.

Now all doubts about the power component of the German crossover will definitely be removed.

Specifications of the BMW X5 xDrive

In terms of dynamics, the new BMW X5 xDrive 40e is in no way inferior to the traditional versions. After all, in fact, most of the work is done by a conventional gasoline two-liter turbo engine that produces 245 horsepower. And the electric motor, whose power is 113 horsepower, here still plays the role of a kind of appendage. The power of two engines, by the way, cannot be simply taken and added up. In fact, the total return of the hybrid power plant is 313 horsepower. This is quite enough for the BMW X5 xDrive 40e to accelerate to a hundred kilometers per hour in just 6.6 seconds.

At the same time, the average fuel consumption of this version of the German crossover should be about 3.3 liters per hundred kilometers. It is this figure that BMW publishes in all official sources.

In real conditions of operation, of course, everything is not so rosy. Thirty kilometers, which the crossover is able to overcome with a fully charged battery and not require a single drop of gasoline, easily turn into 15-20, after which fuel consumption with the same ease increases to the usual 9-10 liters per hundred. And why then all this? In our conditions, the BMW X5 xDrive 40e is really useless. From the ninth floor, you can’t stretch the cable for recharging the battery, and so far even the majority of BMW X5 owners have to dream of their homes.

It is worth talking about a developed network of charging terminals, where an electric battery can be filled with energy in a relatively short time.

Even in large cities, charging stations are rare. Yes, and fuel by European standards, we have nowhere cheaper. In a word, saving money when buying a BMW X5 xDrive 40e, which also costs a little more than regular gasoline versions, will not work for sure.

But in Western Europe the situation is fundamentally different. Pedantic Europeans in a survey of BMW X5 owners found that about 80% of them drive less than thirty kilometers a day. And if you consider that almost all these kilometers fall on city streets, where full power, and therefore the help of a gasoline engine, is not needed, it turns out that you can really go to work every day on a BMW X5 x-Drive 40e and really save fuel.

All the while, the new BMW X5 could be a full electric car. Further more. It's no secret that almost all of Europe is literally surrounded by a network of fast charging terminals.

In the same underground parking lots, there are special places that are designed exclusively for electric vehicles. Plus preferential tariffs for electricity. It turns out great - the owner of the BMW X5 xDrive 40s is working, the car is being recharged at this time.

We understood the beauty of such a petrol-electric concept in other companies. Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid and Audi Q7 e-tron have already made a name for themselves. But again, not in our country. Although ... It's only a matter of time.

Immediately after the declassification of the new BMW X5, fans of the Bavarian SUVs panicked: “X-fifth is not the same!” The car has become more “smoothed” and has almost lost the masculinity and brutality of its predecessors. A very risky move, given that E70 sales have only increased in recent years. In order to understand the features of the third generation X5, we invited the owners of previous versions of the model for a test drive. We were accompanied by a brand new BMW X5 xDrive50i, provided by the official Bayerncraft dealer. The car was equipped with a 4.4-liter V8 biturbo engine, which now develops 450 hp. With.

The army of fans of the previous X5 loved the car precisely for its brutal, “purely masculine” style. The Bavarians were even forced to release the X6 to meet the demand from the female audience. In the third generation, everything changed. The car has become more “smoothed” and typical of the SUV segment. The overall dimensions of the X5 have not changed much: the most noticeable addition is in the front overhang (plus 3 cm). The rest of the indicators vary by a few millimeters. The wheelbase has completely remained the same, which is no wonder - the platform is from the restyled E70 with a front double-lever and a rear multi-link suspension.

Inside the car has become much more interesting. The display of the multimedia system, which was recessed into the bowels of the front panel, now sticks out of the center console. A fashionable solution. The picture on the screen is of excellent quality. The menu does not "slow down". Everything is intuitive. The iDrive washer has grown noticeably. Now it has a handwriting recognition feature. Convenient when using regular navigation, which still does not work in Belarus to the fullest.

In the menu of the multimedia system, you can adjust the operation of seat heating (separate backrest and cushions), the opening angle of the trunk lid, the operation of engine and suspension modes, etc. The iDrive system is intuitive, and even people who have never owned a BMW will be able to find the desired item in a few minutes menu. The head-up display, which was absent in the test car, is also configured here.

Next to the joystick of the 8-speed ZF are the keys for switching the engine and suspension modes. Here you can also turn off the stabilization system and activate the electronic assistant for descending the mountain. The front seats have a huge range of adjustments that will accommodate any person with maximum comfort. The driver's seat can "remember" two settings profiles.

The new X5 offers a wide range of systems to improve handling. In addition to the basic suspension, you can order suspension with adjustable shock absorbers, rear air suspension (7-seater versions have it in the “base”), active roll suppression and a Dynamic Performance Control rear differential. Unfortunately, all these achievements of German engineers did not go to the car that was available for a test drive (the Comfort adaptive suspension was installed on it). That is why the car seemed too soft and even "loose" to its participants. In addition, the X5 pretty heels without an appropriate system.

There are no complaints about the motor. Enough power and torque for good acceleration. The sound is pleasant. The 8-speed "automatic" is faster than the 6-speed predecessor. Depending on the mode, it either turns the engine to the red zone and changes gears almost with a jerk (Sport +), or saves fuel by going into neutral when the gas pedal is released (Eco Pro). Expensive modifications are equipped with paddle "petals", which are located in the optimal place - you do not touch them during active taxiing. The manufacturer claims that the average fuel consumption of the X5 xDrive50i has decreased by 16% compared to the previous generation.

At the Bayerncraft dealership, prices for the new X5 start at 52,000 euros. Although it is unlikely that anyone will take such a modification. Judge for yourself: 2-liter diesel "four", rear-wheel drive, standard options. A similar all-wheel drive version costs 3,000 euros more. Although it is unlikely to become a bestseller. Much more interesting is the X5 xDrive 30d with a 3-liter diesel “six” with a capacity of 258 hp. With. The price of such a car is from 60.6 thousand euros. The model available for a test drive costs 102,000 euros.

Alexander (owner)bmwX5 first generation)

I think the designers set as their goal to get even further away from the image of the tank, with which many people associate the X5 of the first generation. It seemed to me that the F15 is somewhat lower than the E53, and more like a crossover than an SUV. Perhaps, it was precisely because of the unusual proportions that I took the R18 disks installed on the test specimen for the R20. At the same time, having driven in the car both in the rear passenger seat and in the driver's seat, I subjectively assessed the interior as higher than in the E53. Probably, this effect is achieved due to the lower seating position in the cabin. I have to admit that the design of the F15 seemed too “non-revolutionary” to me: this is just the expected evolution of the E70 body, which at one time seemed to me just a “leap into the future” compared to the E53. In the stream, the F15 is not as recognizable and spectacular as the E70 once was.

The car has less massive exterior door handles that open in a predictable “pull” motion, unlike the E53, where each new passenger strives to pull towards him what, according to the design idea, should rise up. I think the owner of the F15 will not have to run around the car in the winter in search of an unfrozen handle (E53 drivers will understand). I was surprised that, unlike the E53, the upper part of the trunk has an electric drive that smoothly closes the lid. At the same time, the lower part opens and closes mechanically - with the help of a special handle, and not with an electric lock with a push-button drive, as in my car.

Mixed feelings were caused by the presence in the front fenders through slots behind the wheel arches. Surely they have some kind of aerodynamic or other purpose well thought out by the designers, but to me, as a simple driver, such a decision seems controversial at least from an aesthetic point of view: the dirt flying from the front wheel settles on the outer surface of the front wing. As a result, the front fenders behind the wheel arches will almost always be dirty.

Behind the wheel of a car, I felt like a driver from the last century. When I first got into the E53 after 10 years of driving the E30, the impression was much more modest than when I got to know the F15 after the E53. Of the known to me, only the instrument panel, steering wheel and armrest with a built-in compartment for every little thing remained. Everything else is like a T-90 tank for the driver of the Austin-Putilovets armored car. Another era: a huge screen in the center, some kind of buttons-levers-knobs ... One thing reassured me - it will be much easier to master all this than to pass a driving test at the traffic police.

I really liked the steering wheel: the optimal thickness plus the presence of thickenings in the upper third - it sits perfectly in the hands. The “petals” of gear shifting under the steering wheel do not interfere at all when driving in automatic mode, while they are very convenient if you want to pretend to be a “racer”. I liked the color electronic display under the tachometer. A separate problem was caused by a non-fixing lever for turning on the direction indicators. During the time I was behind the wheel, I never learned how to use it and performed half of the turns with the “turn signals” turned off, although I was sure that they were turned on.

As for the driving characteristics of the F15, everything turned out to be predictable here: excellent handling, rapid acceleration, excellent braking. Slightly stiffer suspension than in my E53 "on springs". It is a pity that there was not enough time to evaluate the off-road qualities of the F15. I heard a lot about the xDrive system, so I really wanted to try it out. Next time then.

It so happened that I was the last to leave the parking lot where this test drive began. After watching the F15 effectively receding on the snow-covered gravel road, I approached my E53. I recalled the phrase of Adam Kazimirovich Kozlevich: "... my Lauren-Dietrich is a good car." Following the still fresh tracks of the F15, I thought that my Lauren-Dietrich was indeed going almost as briskly as its young successor. Maybe it’s a little noisier in the cabin, and we won’t see such accelerations, and besides, the F15, compared to us, like that Studer from the Meeting Place, has a motor three times. BMW designers are so close to perfection that steps towards it are getting smaller and smaller. But, nevertheless, the progress of developers is obvious. And I, as a firm supporter of the brand, wish them further success and revolutionary ideas.

Vasily (owner)bmwX5 second generation)

Compared to the previous generation, the new X5 has become more aggressive and visually more streamlined. Slots in the front fenders added sportiness, but in reality, all the dirt from under the wheels gets to the body from these structural holes. The lighting technology of the F15 is probably the only external element that allows you to distinguish the F15 from the previous E70 from afar. The rear lights look like an X1 or X3 from a distance.

Visual space in the cabin has increased largely due to the new front panel. Immediately, its shape seems quite unusual, but after a short operation, you understand that this was exactly what was lacking in the previous generation. The screen of the new multimedia system has significantly increased in size and is made in the form of a tablet, which adds modernity to the interior. Noise isolation, in my opinion, has not changed compared to the previous generation.

The new multimedia system BMW NBT surprises primarily with its speed. Functionality carried over mostly from the previous generation BMW CIC. The new screen with even higher resolution makes it clear that you are in a truly new generation of car. Now you can install applications, and there is a deeper integration with modern smartphones. The new iDrive joystick with touchpad is very convenient, although after using the previous generation it is immediately unusual. It was not possible to enjoy the sound, because the tested copy was equipped with a standard sound system.

The tested engine with an index of 5.0i, having a volume of 4.4 liters and two turbochargers, pleased with excellent dynamics. The work of the 8-speed automatic transmission raises no objections. Compared to the previous 6-speed gearbox, it runs more smoothly. Suspension work is a little "slack", probably due to the lack of air suspension and Adaptive Drive system.

Visually, the car began to look really new, but technically nothing revolutionary was received, as it was with the appearance of the E70. In terms of technical characteristics and filling, the car is very similar to the BMW E70 LCI. The quality of the body parts, in my opinion, has become better than in the E70.

Since I already had several BMW cars of different series that were assembled in Germany, I got the feeling that the American assembly differs from the German assembly both in fitting parts and in the execution of body elements. But this is my subjective opinion, maybe I'm wrong. Many argue, they say, “this is not an SUV,” but, it seems to me, he does not pretend to be. On this machine, you can comfortably and dynamically move both around the city and on light off-road. Perhaps this is precisely its purpose.

Vitaly (ownerMercedesML63AMG)

As the owner of the current generation Mercedes ML, it was very interesting for me to look at the closest competitor in the face of the BMW X5. The previous generation X5 (E70) frankly fell short of the ML level in the 166th body in terms of interior quality, sound insulation, off-road properties and many other details. This is quite natural, given that ML entered the market many years later.

The new X5 pleased with a number of things that the previous generation lacked, and as a result, it was ahead of the ML in many ways. Now you can order a high-quality smooth leather interior, including dashboard trim. The SUV has a great dashboard from the 5 Series, a third-generation glass projector, a fast iDrive system with a touch panel on the controller and a wide high-definition screen. Excellent seats with a branded breaking back have more than enough range of adjustments and are extremely comfortable. The new door closers operate quietly and softly and are finger-trap-proof. Active LED headlights, in addition to the chic design, do their job perfectly.

ML or X5? It is impossible to answer this question unambiguously. Now the choice is more difficult than ever, both cars are very good. The X5 definitely wins in terms of electronics and seats, plus it has a glass projector and LED headlights. The ML, in turn, offers a full air suspension with adjustable ride height and an off-road package that allows you to significantly expand the off-road performance, while maintaining the signature comfort of everyday driving. It is also important to remember that the "from" price in both the ML and the X5 has little to do with reality. Both cars in the basic configuration will be, to put it mildly, not the best choice, and the prices for well-equipped copies fly into the sky.

The first generation of today's very popular x5 was the e53. Its release refers to 1999, and the end of production – to 2006. Some, meanwhile, are still talking about the stylistic similarity of the two cars of the German automaker. And although the x5 is 15 cm shorter, as well as somewhat higher and wider, experts talk about a clear relationship between the model and the e39.

Technical review of the car

At the time of the creation of the car, the market was full of ordinary models, the world demanded more, the world demanded individuality and originality. BMW gave the world what it longed for - test drive bmw x5. Then, unlike other SUVs from a German company, came out.

Test drive bmw x5 proved the correctness of the company's vector of movement. The consumer was offered 2 types of engines to choose from: this is a 3-liter in-line 6-cylinder engine with a power of 231 hp. and a 4.4-liter V8 M62 with 286 hp. A couple of years have passed, and 2 more engines have replenished the range of power units: a 3-liter Common Rail with a power of 184 hp. and a 4.6-liter V8 with 347 hp.
