Where there is no lag, it is in the smoothness of the ride. Even on a hard comb, this Range Rover evokes a sense of levitation that the Jaguar can't. Because - which is not allowed for the Jaguar even for an extra charge.

The chassis provides a good balance of comfort and handling. At first, the steering wheel seemed unreasonably light, but thanks to the Configurable Dynamics system, which allows you to change driving settings, I was able to “weight” it. The suspension was left clamped - so the buildup on road waves is less felt.

In straight sections, the car flies with reinforced concrete confidence, and in high-speed corners it is not averse to wag its tail a little - this is a feature of the IDD (Intelligent Driveline Dynamics) all-wheel drive transmission with a multi-plate clutch in the front wheel drive. Under normal conditions, all the thrust goes to the rear, but if necessary, the clutch is blocked, stabilizing the machine. Increased confidence is given by the automatic locking of the rear differential, which distributes traction between the wheels: you can “open” earlier in the turn. In general, everything is fine, but the Porsche Macan will still taste better.

The adaptive cruise control works as it should: the Velar follows the lead vehicle like a thread following a needle. But the lane retention system does not always see the markings, allowing you to drive into the oncoming lane or the roadside.

Diesel Velar is another planet. I got tired of driving quickly, although 700 newton meters is a force! Acceleration is somehow crumpled, with turbo hitches - after all, here is a turbocharger, and not a drive supercharger, like in a gasoline “six”.

In addition to decent economy (average 10 l / 100 km), diesel car I liked it more than gasoline only because the rev limiter works softly and delicately, while the gasoline V6 convulses for three seconds.

Over the mountains, over the valleys

Norway is used to being called the country of the fjords, but there are plenty of other sights here as well. For example, the picturesque Sunnmer Alps in the west of the country. On many peaks, the snow does not melt even in summer. Upstairs, to the "sugar loaves", numerous cars of tourists stretch.

But they are driving on asphalt, and we have to make an “ascent” along an abandoned rocky path. Challenge!

Ersatz SUV is not about Velar. I am translating the Terrain Control system (it adapts the settings of the accelerator, transmission and stabilization system to different road conditions) into the mountain mode and, “without waiting for peritonitis”, I give the command to the air suspension to raise the body. A few seconds, and the clearance increased from the standard 205 to 251 mm.

The first minutes were spent on zeroing - I didn’t immediately get used to the fact that the Velar passes through huge stones without even striking them with its belly. Added a move.

The suspension successfully swallowed the gullies that came across. So most big problem on this stage my ears became - they were laid from the height difference.

I drove down, turning on the ASPC (All Surface Progress Control) system - this is a kind of off-road cruise control. Set 10 km/h and drive. It would seem, just turn the steering wheel! It didn't work out. During jumps on stones, the electronics went crazy and released the brakes. After a moment's hesitation, he drove on himself, without the help of electronics.

Be that as it may, in terms of cross-country ability and adaptability to off-road, Velar is ahead of the mentioned competitors. But it's also more expensive!

Basic Velar goal like a falcon. Do you want air suspension? Prepare 122,400 rubles. For an active rear differential, you need to pay 61,200 rubles, for Terrain Response - 11,300, for ASPC - 26,100, for Configurable Dynamics - 14,000, for adaptive cruise control- 99 500 rubles. And you will have to pay for a full-size spare wheel: 25,300 rubles. The most expensive options are matrix- laser lights and matte color: 198,600 and 156,500 rubles, respectively.

The price of the car in ceremonial versions is approaching eight million. So it is unlikely that Velar will take away many buyers from German competitors. Rather, he will gobble up the Range Rover Sport! And this is the biggest headache for the British. I wonder if a neophyte can beat a classic?

Visually Velar it seems very large, and it is really longer than the Jaguar (due to overhangs) by 7 centimeters, but shorter Range Rover Sport by 4.7 centimeters. Logically, the “cubic” Velar should be inferior in terms of aerodynamic properties f-pace, but in fact its Cx is 0.32 versus 0.34 for the co-platformer.



In favor of Cx, the door handles, made in a compartment-style “flush”, are played, which are put forward, apparently, when the car is unlocked with a key. And also, do not believe it, British engineers adopted the know-how, which was very popular in the 90s among the owners of the "chisel". rear wiper Velar does not have it - water and dirt at speed should be blown away by the air flow passing through the spoiler. That does not detract from the merits of this amazing car.

What's in the photos, what's live Velar is damn similar to the concept-car: with bold chopped lines, giant wheels... But in the cabin it’s already really comfortable, this doesn’t happen in concepts. And this, forgive me flagship range, the most luxurious Land Rover I've ever sat in.

Motors? Motors are different. There are very boring 2-liter turbodiesels with 180 hp. Inexpensive, but from the outside it will still look pretentious, besides, the expense is excellent. The petrol "two-liter" is a little more fun: 250 forces, within the framework of tax prudence. The next 240-horsepower turbodiesel in the hierarchy will probably go a little more fun, also without forcing you to go broke on maintenance. Well, for uncompromising buyers there will be V6- 300 hp diesel and 380 hp petrol with compressor.

Family car range Rover expands every six years. In 2005, the Range Rover Sport entered the market, in 2011 - the compact Evoque, and now it's the turn mid-size crossover Velar. And these photos are not a concept car at all, but ready for serial production automobile!

The name Velar is by no means new. In 1968, this was the name of the prototypes of the very first Range Rover, which were taken around the world for testing. Then this name was chosen solely in order to confuse journalists and photo spies: inside the company, the name Range Rover had already been approved. Now new Velar will take in model range niche between the Evoque and Sport models.

Technically, it's a crossover twin: they share an iQ aluminum platform, front double wishbone suspension, rear multi-link, and a simple all-wheel drive transmission with a front axle clutch and no downshift. Wheelbase- the same 2874 mm. Even the proportion of aluminum in the body structure is the same - 81%. However, the Velar is noticeably longer than the Jaguar (4803 versus 4731 mm) with almost identical width (1930 mm) and height (1665 mm). Compared to the older SUV Range Rover Sport, the Velar is just 47mm shorter, but still 115mm lower.

The developers paid special attention to aerodynamics. All “unnecessary” elements have been removed from the surface of the body, including luggage rails and even door handles: they extend approximately like Tesla electric vehicles. And on the trunk lid there is no familiar wiper: air flow from the roof passes through special slots in the spoiler and, as planned, blows away all the dirt even on the outskirts of rear window. Final coefficient aerodynamic drag only 0.32 instead of 0.34 for the related Jaguar, although now there are even sleeker crossovers.

Interior architecture in general is traditional for Range Rovers, but in Velara - the realm of screens and touch panels. Analog devices - only in simple configurations, the rest are equipped with a 12.3-inch display. And the Touch Pro Duo media system is already “in the base”: it includes two 10-inch touchscreens, on which almost all secondary functions are concentrated. The top screen tilts up to 30 degrees to fit riders of all sizes to the perfect position.

Only three physical handles remained on the console, and their functionality changes depending on the selected menu item: for example, with the same puck, you can adjust the temperature in the cabin and the mode of operation of the “off-road” electronics. There are even touch panels on the steering wheel - and they can also change their purpose. Trunk volume - 632 liters "under the shelf" and 1731 liters with the rear sofa folded, the back of which is divided into three parts in a ratio of 40:20:40.

A special British chic is upholstery in expensive Kvadrat fabric, which can be ordered instead of hateful leather. Also among the options are four-zone climate control, heated all seats, a glass roof, cameras all-round view, adaptive cruise control and many familiar systems preventive security. There are four types of LED headlights to choose from, “normal” or matrix. And in the very expensive option added laser-phosphor sections high beam that hit 550 meters! Previously, such headlights were found only on BMW i8 and supercars.

The range of engines is the same as that of the Jaguar F-Pace crossover. It is opened by a two-liter diesel engine of the Ingenium family in versions with one (180 hp, 430 Nm) or two turbochargers (240 hp, 500 Nm). The petrol turbo four of the same series develops 250 hp. and 365 Nm, but before the end of the year, the most forced version with a return of 300 hp will appear. and 400 Nm. Next comes Velar with a V6 3.0 turbodiesel (300 hp, 700 Nm), and at the top of the range is a modification with a compressor three-liter “six”, which produces 380 hp. and 450 Nm. Such a crossover can accelerate to 100 km / h in 5.7 seconds, and its maximum speed is electronically limited (250 km / h). The base 180-horsepower version will pick up a “hundred” in 8.9 seconds.

In the market, the Range Rover Velar will be positioned half a step above its sister Jaguar, so no rear wheel drive and manual transmission. All modifications - with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed "automatic" ZF. And if the F-Pace is offered only with a spring suspension, then Velar can be ordered with pneumatic elements (for machines with V6 engines, they are included in the basic package). Ground clearance in this case reaches 251 mm, although high speed it decreases by 18 mm, and when loading - by 50 mm. However, with a standard spring suspension, the ground clearance is also sufficient (213 mm). In addition, all Velars have electronically controlled shock absorbers with variable stiffness.

The Terrain Response proprietary electronic system with several off-road modes is already “in the base”, and for a surcharge, a more advanced Terrain Response 2 complex is offered, which has an automatic mode added. Machines with six-cylinder engines also have an electronically controlled rear axle differential lock, although it is intended more for fast driving on asphalt, rather than to conquer off-road.

Velar will be produced at the company's head plant in Solihull, that is, on the same conveyor with the Jaguar F-Pace crossover. Prices in the UK have already been announced - from 45 to 85 thousand pounds. For comparison: the base Jaguar F-Pace costs 35 thousand pounds there, and the Range Rover Sport - from 60 thousand pounds. If we project these data onto Russian market, it turns out that our Velar prices will start at approximately four million rubles. The start of sales is scheduled for autumn, although Europeans will be able to buy new crossover already in July.
