To make a replacement, you will need a car pit. Work should be carried out in a well-ventilated room or on the street (but not in hot weather!), away from sources of open fire (of course, you should not smoke during the operation either).
The fuel filter is located under the car just behind the fuel tank in front of the exhaust pipe. To remove it, it is necessary to loosen the tightening force of the bolt tightening the holding bracket:
Having loosened the bracket, it is necessary to unscrew the two fittings of the inlet and outlet pipelines. In order to unscrew the nuts, you must first install one “19” wrench on the nut located on the filter housing, and then unscrew the pipeline fitting nut with the second wrench, as shown in the figure below:
Remember how the fuel direction indicator is located before removing the filter, and be careful when removing it - fuel may pour out of the system. Pull out the old filter. When installing a new filter, you must be guided by the signs on its surface:
Please note that if installed incorrectly, fuel will not flow into the pipeline. Also pay attention to the presence of sealing rings. Their installation is required. Otherwise, there will be leaks.
Install the filter in reverse order. After installing the filter, start the engine and inspect the filter for drops of fuel. If fuel leaks occur, check the seals of the pipe fittings or the tightness of the nuts.
The fuel filter in VAZ 2109 vehicles with an injection engine is replaced after every 20 thousand kilometers or if there are problems with the fuel supply.
The process of replacing the filter is not complicated, however, it requires a garage with a car pit or at least a flyover, since the element itself is located under the bottom of the car behind the fuel tank near the exhaust pipe. It is almost impossible to get to it without a pit or overpass. From tools and improvised means, you will need keys for 10, 17, 19, as well as a rag.

Step-by-step instructions for replacing the fuel filter on a VAZ 2109 with photos and videos
We install the car on a pit or on a flyover and immobilize it. Taking into account the fact that some gasoline may leak out during filter replacement, it is not recommended to carry out work near an open flame.
1. We find the fuel filter itself.

3. With keys 17 and 19, we grab the nut on the fuel line and the nut on the filter itself. Unscrew.
4. At this point, gasoline will begin to flow from the disconnection point. You can substitute some dishes, or just use a rag. Do not lose the gasket (rubber sealing ring).
5. In the same way, unscrew the second fitting.
6. Completely unscrew the clamp and remove the filter.
Fuel cleaning is necessary for the normal operation of an automobile engine and to increase its service life. The engine must be supplied with fuel purified from various impurities and contaminants. For this purpose, it is customary to install fuel filters. How to work with them on the VAZ 2109 and 99, 2114 and 2115 will be discussed below.
What fuel filters are installed on VAZ 2109/2114/2115 cars
Filters designed for various power plants are installed on VAZ cars of the listed models. They are divided into two types: for coarse cleaning (mesh in the fuel pump) and fine cleaning of PTO (separate filter).

Filters designed for carburetor systems are made of a durable and transparent material, usually plastic. The transparency of the body allows you to monitor the state of cleanliness and change the consumable in a timely manner. These models are capable of cleaning fuel in the 15–20 µm zone. Any of these materials is placed inside them: felt, felt or paper.
For the injection systems of VAZ cars, cleaning of a much higher value is already needed. Therefore, filters for injection "nines", VAZ 2114 and 2115 are different. They are made of stainless steel and are installed separately.
For rough cleaning, lamellar-slotted, mesh and tape are used, which trap litter in the fuel. On the contrary, PFT uses elements made of porous materials.
Which is better
Fuel filters, especially for engines with an injector, must have the required cleaning quality. Therefore, the cleaner can be called the best, the throughput of which is at least 5-7 microns (injector) and 15 microns (carburetor). In addition, it must not collapse in case of a pressure of 3–5 bar.
Estimated cost of replacing fuel filters
Replacement takes approximately 30–50 minutes, depending on the model of the part. In this regard, the cost of the procedure in the service station also differs, which is calculated according to the amount of time spent.
In fact, it is recommended to initially agree with the service center employee on the cost of the procedure, coordinate the time, etc. As a rule, the replacement price starts from 700 rubles and does not cross the line of 1000-1200 rubles.
The price of the VAZ fuel filter itself does not exceed 200–600 rubles.
Where are the purifiers located?
The location of the fuel filters on VAZ models depends on the engine. On injection and carburetor systems, they are located in different places.

On a VAZ with an injection system, the FTO is installed under the car, at the back near the muffler. It is mounted in the form of a cartridge in the fuel line. To inspect or dismantle it, you have to lift the car onto a flyover or pit.
How to replace the coarse and fine fuel filter on a VAZ 2109/2114/2115
Replacement on these modifications of the VAZ can be done by hand. It is enough to get competent information, to correctly imagine the process of removing and installing the part as a whole, to focus on the nuances.
Replacement on carbureted cars VAZ 2109/2114/2115
The replacement algorithm for carburetor VAZs begins, first of all, with the removal of the element.
- First, the clamps are loosened, which are located on both sides of the filter (first the one closer to the engine, then the other).
- Then the fuel lines are disconnected.
To remove the fine filter, you need to loosen the clamps and remove both fuel hoses
Thus, you can easily and simply remove the filter on carburetor VAZs.
If fuel starts to leak out while removing the hoses, immediately close the hole with a plug. When dismantling the consumable, it is recommended to keep a plug or just a rag on hand.
The new filter is installed in place of the old one like this:
- find the arrow on the filter;

- put it so that the arrow looks at the fuel pump.
At the end, do not forget to tighten the clamps.
If the metal hose clamps are worn out, the hoses are poorly fixed, the screws are scrolling, it would be better to replace them. Clamps are inexpensive (20-30 rubles).
It remains to pump fuel into the filter, because the new element will be dry. Pumping is done manually. Press the fuel pump lever a couple of times. At the same time, look at the filter - you should see how it fills up.

Replacement on injection cars VAZ 2109/2114/2115
On vehicles with fuel injection systems, the fuel filter is in a different location. The replacement process also differs, first of all, in that the car needs to be lifted into a pit or overpass.
- remove the clamp holding the filter;
- loosen the cleaner mounting bolts with a 19 wrench;
Loosen the filter nuts with two wrenches.
- before removing the filter, you need to remember the direction of the arrow indicating the direction of movement of gasoline in the pipes.

Then you can set a new filter:
- connect both fittings, tighten;
- tighten the clamp bolts;
- start the engine and let it run for 2-3 minutes to check for leaks.
The tightening must be carried out taking into account the rules for tightening the nut connections. If you overtighten the fasteners, this can lead to negative consequences.
If a leak is detected, then tighten the nut more tightly in the place where the fuel flows out.

- the rear sofa of the car leans back from the passenger compartment;

Precautionary measures
- It is impossible to work in a room closed on all sides. Ventilation must be provided.
- Smoking is strictly prohibited, as when working with the fuel system, any spark can lead to sad consequences.
- It is advisable to wear gloves and wear goggles. Contact with flammable liquids on the skin of the hands or on the mucous membranes of the eyes can cause a severe allergic reaction or vision problems.
- It is not allowed to work in the heat, when the air temperature is higher than 25–30 °C.

Filter replacement schedule (after how much to change)
Experienced motorists and experts recommend changing the filter more often than indicated in the regulations. This is due to the fact that the quality of today's fuel at our filling stations is extremely low. Unfortunately, domestic gasoline does not differ in perfect purity, and this is not only due to the original quality of the fuel, but also to poor transportation and storage conditions.
Obviously, the consequence of poor and dirty fuel will be an increase in the load on the engine and a decrease in its power. Accordingly, the resource of the fuel system will also decrease.
According to the regulations, the cleaner on carburetor systems must be changed every 10 thousand kilometers of the vehicle, and on injection systems - every 20 thousand km. Given the above recommendations regarding fuel purity, it is desirable to reduce the replacement period to 6-7 thousand kilometers and 10 thousand kilometers, respectively.
Causes of a malfunction of the fuel filter VAZ 2109/2114/2115
As it was written above, the causes of the malfunction of the purifier are dirty fuel filled into the tanks of cars at Russian gas stations. The high resin content in gasoline has a devastating effect on all systems of the vehicle's power plant and injectors. This clogs up the fuel lines. If water is present in the fuel, then this contributes to the appearance of corrosion, system elements are damaged, breakdowns occur in the cylinder-piston group, etc.
One of the most common filter failures is leaking. This is caused not only by the fact that the cleaner is clogged with dirt, but also by the presence of excessive pressure in the system. Another cause of leakage is associated with abrasion of the o-rings inside the fine filter.
If the filter has leaked due to the presence of dirt inside, then it is better to replace such an element. Worn seals must also be replaced with new ones. But if there is excessive pressure in the system, then you need to pump out the air from the inside. On VAZ cars, a special spool is provided for this.

On VAZ vehicles, in which the cleaner is fixed on latches, the cause of the malfunction may be hidden elsewhere. The latch can simply break off, and then the filter will begin to pass fuel. In the photo below, the latches are circled in large red circles.

A broken latch is always a problem, as it is simply impossible to find it for sale separately. You can, of course, purchase tubes as a set, but they are sold in a set of 3 pieces. The price is not small - 1300 rubles. If you do not want to buy an expensive kit with an extra part, you can cut off the plastic part of the latches, leaving only the part that goes into the pipeline. Then make two adapters from fuel hoses, put them on and secure with ordinary clamps for 20 rubles.
Another common defect is due to the fact that the filter is not filled with fuel or it happens halfway. The reason for this lies in the air lock formed inside the fuel system. Air is expelled, as mentioned above, through the spool.
If there is no special spool on the VAZ, then it is easy to expel the air by removing the fuel supply hose and let the engine work out the remaining fuel. Then the hose is threaded into place, and gasoline is manually pumped into the system.
A dirty filter cannot always be replaced. In some cases, especially when the purifier was installed relatively recently, you can try to clean it. This is done as follows: a filter is blown with a stream of air from the compressor. The procedure can be carried out at any service station or enterprise where there is an air compressor. You can also ask familiar drivers of KamAZ or ZiL, on whose trucks there is a compressor with the possibility of air sampling.
Thus, the fuel filter on VAZ vehicles may fail for the following reasons:
- the malfunction is caused by clogging or failure of the sealing cuffs;
- due to rusting of the internal elements, which is explained by the ingress of water into the filter;
- due to a broken latch, which leads to fuel leakage;
- due to an air pocket formed inside the system due to excessive pressure.
Timely and competent care of the filters will extend the performance of the car. Replacing the cleaner will make it possible to avoid difficulties in the operation of the fuel system.
For carbureted engines
(description of the air filter replacement procedure)
Work on replacing the air filter is included in the routine maintenance procedures for VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars, as well as all other cars. If you do not go through these procedures, you should independently monitor the condition of the filter, because. when it is heavily polluted, engine power decreases, gasoline consumption increases and the emission of harmful combustion products into the atmosphere increases.
It is recommended to check the condition of the filter every 10-15 thousand kilometers; if the car is operated in conditions of high dustiness, then once every 5-10 thousand kilometers.
The filter replacement procedure is very simple. First of all, you need to remove the cover of the filter box by unscrewing the nut that secures the filter cover and opening the three clips around the perimeter of the box.
After that, remove the old filter and wipe the inside of the filter box with a dry cloth to remove any remaining dirt and dust.
Then you should put a new filter, close the cover of the box, tighten the nut and put on the clamps around the perimeter of the filter box. New filter installed!

For injection (injection) engines
Replacing the air filter on models of the Samara family with injection (injection) engine modifications is regulated and must be done at least every 20 thousand kilometers.
Replacing the filter element is quite simple (the description is suitable for models VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 and VAZ 2113, 2114, 2115). First of all, you need to remove the mass air flow sensor:
After unscrewing the fastening screws, lift the cover up. The filter itself will be in its grooves:
Pay attention to how it is installed. If suddenly, for some reason, you did not pay attention to this, then on the lower part of the housing there is an indicator in which direction the filter element should be installed. We install a new filter in place of the old ...
... and screw the lid back on. Install the mass air flow sensor. It is necessary to insert the sensor into the seat until it clicks.
We start the engine and check the work. If its operation after installing a new filter has become unstable, then the filter may not have been installed correctly. It is necessary to perform all the above operations again, only this time set the filter to the desired position.
A number of malfunctions in the operation of the carburetor engine of VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars are directly related to the degree of contamination of the fuel strainer on the fuel intake in the gas tank. It is located on the bottom of the fuel intake tube and consists of a fine mesh.
Many people are familiar with the situation when they can’t win in any way when you press the “gas” pedal, unstable, interruptions in the operation of the engine until it stops. The carburetor has already been replaced several times, everything has been replaced, the ignition angle has been adjusted and the ignition system has been completely rebuilt, but there is no sense, or the measures taken help only temporarily.
In this situation, you should pay attention to the fuel strainer of the fuel intake in the car's gas tank. Many are simply unaware of its existence, some forget about it, others clean it incorrectly. But in vain, since this filter is an outpost of the entire fuel system of the car in the process of cleaning the gasoline entering the engine. Its clogging reduces (or stops it altogether) into the carburetor and further into the car engine. And this just leads to problems in its operation in different modes, including “floating” ones (which appear, then disappear).

Periodically looking at the filter in the light to assess the degree of cleaning, since visually even a dirty filter may appear clean. After the cleaning procedure, we blow the filter with compressed air using a compressor or a conventional wheel pump.

We wash it with gasoline or acetone and blow it with compressed air. Along the way, we clean the fuel discharge pipe into the tank (“return line”). After cleaning, we check the ease of passing through the air tubes by blowing into them with our mouths.
We install the fuel intake back into the fuel tank, connect pipes and wires to it.

- After cleaning the filter on the fuel intake, you should pay attention to the cleanliness of the entire fuel system of the car engine. Clean and replace if necessary
