With the launch of the M-Class in 1997, Mercedes-Benz established the premium SUV segment. Since autumn 2015, this model family received the name GLE, indicating that we are talking about a family of SUVs belonging to the E-Class.

The star brand from Stuttgart is currently represented in the SUV segment by seven extremely successful models (GLA, GLC, GLC Coupé, GLE, GLE coupe, GLS, G-Class). Dealers in the US and Europe will receive it in early 2019, and dealers in China in the first half of 2019. GLE vehicles are manufactured at the plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA.

Five key innovations in the new GLE:

  • E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL: fully networked, hydropneumatic, active suspension on a 48-volt base, for the first time in combination with air suspension also new development. It is the only system on the market where the spring rate and damping force can be adjusted individually on each wheel. Thus, it counteracts not only rolls, but also “pecks” and pitching of the body.

  • 4 MATIC: For the first time in a 6-, 8-cylinder and plug-in hybrid, fully variable all-wheel drive (TonD, Torque on Demand = Torque on Demand) is available, where the torque distribution between the front and rear axles is adjustable from 0 to 100% according to the selected driving mode. When ordering the optional Offroad package, the driver will have at his disposal a world first – also fully variable all-wheel drive (TonD) with crawler and booster gears. This raises the off-road capability of the GLE to a level never seen before.
  • Seat comfort: With a significantly longer wheelbase (an increase of 80mm), the new GLE is correspondingly more spacious. Special comfort will provide an optional second row of fully electrically adjustable seats, with a third row of seats available as an option.

Exterior design: sporty look

The GLE aesthetic is based on the harmonious interaction of the emotional and intellectual components, designed to arouse the desire to own this car. It is characterized by timeless beauty, a combination of hi-tech and handmade art, as well as a focus on the essentials.

Modern luxury on and off the road is the design message for the new GLE. Judging by its proportions alone, with its long wheelbase, short overhangs and large, flush-mounted wheels, there's no doubt that it'll feel at home in any terrain and perform brilliantly. At the same time, in the spirit of the design concept of Sensual Simplicity, it sees the rejection of individual edges and notches in favor of more convex surfaces. Planes effectively alternate with precision-drawn graphic elements.

Impressiveness and power radiates from the front of the new GLE, which is facilitated by: a vertically located radiator grille in an octagonal, typical SUV interpretation; protruding, chrome-plated body protection from below and a hood with a pair of "power" ribs. This eye-catching image is enhanced day and night by the original design of the headlights.

High beam ULTRA RANGE LED headlights The MULTIBEAM LED headlight provides the maximum light intensity permitted by law, i.e. the brightness of the main beam falls below the reference value of 1 lux only at a distance of more than 650 meters.

Viewed from the side, the wide GLE-specific C-pillar indicates stability that exudes superiority. Large wheels, ranging in size from 18 to 22 inches, are placed in wheel arches with spectacular lining. Along with the pillar-mounted roof rails or the optional illuminated side step, it also indicates the vehicle's rugged off-road character. And the feeling of a premium class sedan, on the contrary, arises from the chrome edging of the side glazing.

The mesmerizing power of the interior of the new GLE is born from the contrast between the luxurious-elegant design aesthetic inherent in executive sedan Mercedes-Benz, and brutally progressive details inherent in an SUV. Salon: more space in the rear and a third row of seats on order

One size bigger: Compared to its predecessor, the new GLE has a significantly longer wheelbase (2955mm, 80mm more). The result is a significant increase in space, especially for rear passengers. Legroom in the second row of seats has increased by 69mm to a total of 1045mm. The ceiling height at the rear has been increased by 33mm to 1025mm thanks to the use of fixed rear seats with a 40:20:40 backrest split as standard. Moreover, the right and left seats are individually adjustable in the longitudinal direction by up to 100 mm; the backrests, lowered forward in a ratio of 40:20:40, can be tilted, and the headrests are height adjustable. The rear seats are adjusted using the Mercedes-Benz-specific switches on the door trim. The forward lowering of all rear seatbacks is also carried out entirely electrically through the use of a separate switch panel in the luggage compartment.

The maximum volume of the luggage compartment is 825 liters behind the rear seats, and with the rear seats folded down - 2055 liters. The 72mm wider loading width for long items makes it easier to accommodate bulky luggage. For the practical placement of tourist equipment in the cabin, special holders and protective devices have been developed in the form of accessories. Thanks to the AIRMATIC air suspension, the rear end can be lowered by approx. 40 mm via a switch to facilitate loading and unloading luggage.

Even more flexibility will be provided to the user by the option of a reclining third row of seats, designed for two passengers. And thanks to the Easy-Entry function, available for the second row of seats with fully electric adjustment, both rear passengers will be able to sit comfortably in their seats.

Also new is the "ENERGIZING seat kinetics" function available for the front seats in combination with the fully electric seat adjustment and memory function. The kinetics of the ENERGIZING seats, through the smallest movements of the seat cushion and backrest, support changes in seating position during the journey.

ENERGIZING comfort control: now under the guidance of a trainer

The ENERGIZING comfort control function integrates various in-vehicle comfort systems into a single network, uses light and music to set the mood, and offers various modes massage for a variety of programs to manage comfort and well-being.

An innovation is ENERGIZING COACH ("fitness trainer" ENERGIZING). This intelligent algorithm-based service recommends one of the programs - depending on the situation and taking into account individual factors. Recommendations are more accurate when a compatible Garmin® wearable device is connected, as personal metrics such as stress levels or sleep quality are then taken into account. MBUX: now with interior assistant

The GLE uses the latest generation MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience multimedia system. Unlike the A-Class, where this revolutionary system debuted, two large 12.3-inch (31.2 cm) displays are used as standard, side-by-side for a solid widescreen display. Information in the instrument cluster and multimedia display is easy to read on the large high-resolution screens. Emotional acting out with stunning graphics in high resolution emphasizes the intuitive clarity of the control structure.

Depending on the mood or to match the current interior, the user will be able to switch between four visually different display styles:

The optional MBUX interior assistant provides intuitive, natural control of various comfort functions and MBUX system functions, also by recognizing the user's movements. To do this, a camera in the overhead control panel monitors the hand movements of the driver and front passenger. When the hand approaches the touch screen or the instrument panel on the center console, the image on the multimedia display changes, for example, individual elements specially highlighted. This system is able to distinguish between the hands of the driver and the front passenger, that is, it knows which of the seats should be set, for example, the massage function.

In addition, some functions can be controlled simple movements hands: for example, the reading light can be turned on and off by moving your hand close to the interior rear-view mirror. Both the driver and front passenger can each program one personal preference function, which can then be activated with a V-shaped gesture, that is, spreading the middle and forefinger.

MBUX control as a whole has been improved in many ways. For example, the settings menu got new design, and the initial setup assistant has been improved. Among the approximately 40 new MBUX features in the GLE, there are, for example:

The strengths of the system also include the touch control of the multimedia display used on a serial basis and the use of a picture created using augmented reality technology in route navigation: the video image of the surrounding space is supplemented in this case with useful navigation information, for example, arrows automatically appear directly on the multimedia display. signs or house numbers. This makes it easier for the driver to find a specific house number or find the correct exit to turn.

Intelligent voice control with natural speech recognition, activated, for example, by the key phrase Hey Mercedes, has also improved: much more complex commands and questions will initially be understood in the first three languages ​​​​in the list - Chinese (Mandarin), American, English and German.

Also made available projection display the next generation that sets new standards with its 720 x 240 pixel resolution and extended throw distance. Important information is projected onto the windshield to reduce driver distraction from what is happening on the road.

This doubling virtual picture, now 20 percent brighter, is much easier to read in bright road conditions and allows you to display more information, such as the current source of the audio file, current phone call data, signal strength and battery charge of the connected to the car phone.

In addition, it also displays the time of arrival at the destination and the distance to it, if the route guidance function is enabled. The driver can also choose to display information that is important to him at a particular moment, including additional information when driving off-road, such as data on body roll, torque distribution and acceleration forces.

Drive: inline six-cylinder engine in GLE 450 4Matic with EQ Boost starter-alternator

The new Mercedes-Benz GLE will launch first with a new petrol six-cylinder inline engine, other units, including diesel ones, as well as a plug-in hybrid (Plug-in-Hybrid) will become available later.

At the time of market launch, it will be offered Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC(fuel consumption combined: 9.6 - 8.3 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 220 - 190 g/km) 1 which is the first petrol model to feature a series electrified - through 48-volt technology - six-cylinder inline engine. The Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) performs hybrid functions such as afterburner EQ or recuperation and enables fuel savings that have not been possible with high-voltage hybrid technology until now.

Thanks to the use of ISG, a belt drive for accessories on the engine shield is no longer required, which reduces its structural length. The narrow design, together with the spatial separation of the intake and exhaust system, creates room for an exhaust gas aftertreatment system close to the engine. For power consumers such as the water pump or the air conditioning compressor, the onboard 48 volt power supply is used in the same way as for the Integrated Starter-Alternator, which simultaneously feeds the battery through high-efficiency recuperation.

4MATIC all-wheel drive: agile on the track, superior off-road

On all modifications of the new GLE, torque transmission is applied automatic transmission 9G-TRONIC transmissions. The wide range of gear ratios, from first to ninth gear, provides a significant and noticeable reduction in engine speed and is a decisive factor in achieving high energy efficiency and driving comfort. In the case of four-cylinder engines, the 4MATIC all-wheel drive is implemented by a transfer case, which distributes the traction torque between both axles in a fixed ratio of 50:50. Spinning wheels are braked individually by the braking system.

With the rest of the engines, such as in the case of the GLE 450, a transfer case is used as standard, where an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch is used. It allows you to vary the distribution of tractive torque between the front and rear axles in the range from 0 to 100% (Torque on Demand = torque on demand). Also new is the optional transfer case, which is specially designed for superior dynamics, also off-road. As well as an adjustable multi-plate clutch with Torque-on-Demand function, it additionally features a crawler gear as well as automatic locking with a locking effect from 0 to 100% for off-road driving.

At the same time, both fully integrated into the network transfer boxes with the "Torque on Demand" function make it possible to further increase driving safety and agility, especially when cornering, by specifically influencing the yaw moment in the direction of skidding or skidding of the front axle of the vehicle.

Assistance systems: more effective support in traffic congestion situations

Assistance systems also debut with the new GLE Mercedes-Benz newest generations, the purpose of which is to provide support to the driver in cooperation with him. Thus, it was possible to increase the level of active safety not only in relation to its predecessor: a number of Intelligent Drive functions are unique, and not only in the SUV segment.

Both those who spend a lot of time behind the wheel, and those who drive little, are well aware of this dangerous situation when, around the corner, you suddenly find yourself in front of the end of a traffic jam. In such a case, the new GLE will support its driver, because here the work with traffic jams begins even before approaching them, includes assistance when driving in a mode with frequent stops, and continues even after the “dissolving” of the congestion.

After all, when the DISTRONIC active distance control system with speed control depending on the route section is turned on, the new GLE, using information from LiveTraffic, will already be able to recognize a traffic jam or congestion in advance and respond to it even before the driver himself notices such a traffic obstruction. If a traffic jam is thus detected (and the driver does not actively take any other action), DISTRONIC will prudently reduce the speed to approximately 100 km/h. This will create enough reserve for the active emergency braking system to be able to slow the car to a complete stop in time before the registered end of the traffic jam.

And then, even in a traffic jam on the motorway, the active traffic jam assist system can make life much easier for the driver: in the presence of road markings, this system can take over the task of keeping the lane and maintaining a safe lane, for the most part and with a high degree of efficiency. distances when driving at a speed not exceeding 60 km / h. The movement will be able to automatically resume if no more than one minute has passed after a complete stop.

When the traffic jam is cleared, the GLE will accelerate again to the speed previously set in the DISTRONIC active distance control system with speed control depending on the route. If the driver does not set a certain speed, then in Germany, for example, on the autobahn, it will focus on the value of 130 km / h. If road signs indicate otherwise, the car will automatically reorient itself to the specified speed limit.

In order to recognize traffic jams, Active Traffic Jam Assist takes into account the type of road, the speed, the intervals between passing vehicles and the distance between adjacent vehicles in the analysis. Along with a multi-purpose stereoscopic video camera (SMPC) and a long-range radar, it uses front-facing multi-mode angle radars to detect wedged vehicles.

If Active Steering Assist and Active Distance Assist are activated, Active Traffic Jam Assist is automatically activated when a traffic jam is detected on the motorway. This will be indicated on the instrument cluster with the message “Traffic Jam Assist Enabled”. As soon as the traffic jam assist system is activated and the vehicle begins to move in traffic jam, the "green steering wheel" symbol for the active steering assistance system in the instrument cluster will be supplemented by the "traffic jam" symbol.

Always at your service: a whole host of additional assistants are at the ready

The new GLE not only demonstrates the expansion of Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive in the form of driver assistance when driving in traffic, but also takes another big step towards autonomous driving. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist provide the driver with even more comfortable support in maintaining the safety interval and in steering, while cornering and approaching junctions are now automatically controlled. Added to this are a steering assist system with obstacle avoidance function, a significantly improved lane keeping system, as well as additional functions of the active emergency stop system.

An absolute novelty is the Active Brake Assist slewing function: if there is a danger of collision with oncoming traffic when turning through the oncoming lane, the GLE can be slowed down to the speeds typical for making such turns. Intervention by the braking system occurs when the driver signals (by turning on the turn signal) an intention to swerve, and the car can still be slowed to a complete stop before it crosses the lane markings. Recognition of oncoming vehicles is carried out using a long-range radar sensor located on the front of the body and a multi-purpose stereoscopic video camera.

In addition, the new GLE, like the recently introduced A-Class, features Active Blind Spot Assist with exit warning. This function able to reduce the risk of collision with other participants traffic, for example, with cyclists passing by. Active Blind Spot Assist monitors hard-to-see areas even when the vehicle is at a complete stop, being able to warn the vehicle when the door is opened when other vehicles, motorcycles or cyclists are approaching. This function is active for another three seconds after the engine is turned off. The warning is carried out by means of a visual signal on the outside rear-view mirrors, as well as acoustically via the instrument cluster.

Maneuvering Assistance: Trailer Maneuvering Assistance

New to the Mercedes-Benz range and available for the GLE sold in Europe is the Trailer Maneuvering Assist System option. This makes reversing maneuvers particularly easy for drivers with little trailer experience. The trailer assist system automatically adjusts the turning angle of the vehicle when the speed is limited to 5 km/h. The so-called articulation angle sensor in the ball head towing device conveys the necessary information.

Even more ride comfort, even more agility, as well as completely new features such as the release mode, are offered by the optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension, which is now combined with the newly developed AIRMATIC air suspension. It is the only system on the market where the spring rate and damping force can be adjusted individually on each wheel. Thus, it counteracts not only rolls, but also “pecks” and pitching of the body. The E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension, combined with ROAD SURFACE SCAN and CURVE cornering tilt, provides an absolutely incredible level of comfort, underscoring Mercedes-Benz's ambitious ambition to build the most intelligent SUV suspension in the world.

The E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension was developed by Mercedes-Benz and has an operating voltage of 48V and is available as an option for engines with six cylinders or more. On bad roads the system is even capable of recovering electricity, which reduces energy consumption by about half compared to the previous system in the S-Class. Hydropneumatics generate dynamic forces that override the forces of the air suspension and actively support and dampen the vehicle body, for example during longitudinal and lateral acceleration or when driving on rough roads.

Release Mode is a completely new off-road feature: if the GLE gets stuck in a sand dune, for example, it can help release the vehicle in most cases. At the same time, if possible, the level of the body is automatically raised and lowered several times, which changes the pressure of the wheels on the surface and, therefore, improves traction - and the GLE is released on its own. Another new feature for off-road use is individual wheel steering. It allows you to individually adjust ground clearance on each wheel touch screen multimedia display and thus improve the vehicle's orientation on rough terrain, for example when the wheel is in a ditch or when the wheel's air spring is fully compressed.

In addition, the GLE's E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension features the CURVE cornering function: the GLE leans into a corner like a motorcycle, enabling three-stage cornering with almost no centrifugal force. If the GLE is equipped with a multi-purpose stereoscopic camera, it is possible to scan the road surface with the ROAD SURFACE SCAN system: the camera continuously scans the road surface, and the suspension reacts to any bumps even before driving over them and significantly compensates for them.

In addition to E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, the GLE is also available with the newly developed suspension with steel springs and the newly developed AIRMATIC air suspension with Adaptive Damping System Plus (ADS+)

Approximately in June 2018, official sales of a new generation of mid-size premium SUVs from Mercedes - GLE W167 will start in Russia (photo below). The appearance of the Mercedes GLE W167 has become more elegant, the interior has become more comfortable, and in terms of driving performance, the car will give odds to most European and Asian competitors in the same price category.

Interestingly, until recently, the GLE line of SUVs had a different name - M-class. This designation was used from 1997 to 2005 (during the production of the first generation of cars). The reason for the renaming is the claims put forward by the lawyers of another German giant (BMW), which had previously patented the use of the initial letter M for its own lineup.

The second name change, which took place in 2015 along with the next restyling, brought the definitively established name to the elite SUVs - GLE (Geländewagen Lang E-Klasse, elongated class E SUV). Since then, nothing has changed, and it is unlikely that soon Mercedes marketers will once again think about renaming.
