In the city, on the Stepway, you can easily attack curbs, including those that are not high according to GOST, or, say, successfully wade through a yard that has not been cleared of snow. Increased ground clearance and a small curb weight (1062 kg) fully contribute to this.

In order to reduce the length of the right wheel drive, the inboard joint housing is moved away from the gearbox housing. To do this, an additional element was introduced into the design of the gearbox - a splined shaft, which is made in one piece with the side gear of the differential.

The external and internal hinges of the drives (of the "Tripod" type) have different designs. The hinges of the drives are covered with dirt-protective covers.

The internal hinge of the drive provides the possibility of angular movements of the suspension and compensates for the mutual movements of the suspension and the power unit by changing the length of the drive shaft. The left and right wheel drive inner joints are not interchangeable.
The tip of the housing of the inner hinge of the right wheel drive is put on the splined shaft coming out of the gearbox housing and made integral with the side gear of the differential (for clarity, it is shown on the dismantled gearbox).

The spring, installed inside the housing of the inner hinge of the right wheel drive, ensures that the hinge housing is pressed against the side gear of the differential during suspension operation.

The body of the inner hinge of the left wheel drive is located in the gearbox and is made integral with the left side gear of the differential (the wheel drive is removed for clarity).

A needle bearing assembly with an oil seal is installed on the left wheel drive shaft behind the three-pin inner joint. The bearing inner ring is pressed onto the drive shaft and rotates with it. On the stationary outer ring of the bearing, a protective cover of the inner hinge is fixed with a clamp. At its other end, the hinge cover is attached to the gearbox housing through a metal flange holder.
An oil seal installed in the outer ring of the bearing prevents oil leakage from the gearbox along the drive shaft. The bearing seal is closed from dirt by a plastic dirt deflector mounted on the shaft.

Warning: If the mudguard of the hinge or the bearing seal is damaged, oil will leak from the gearbox.

The external hinge of the drive ensures the transmission of torque at various angles of rotation of the drive wheels.
The outer hinges of the drives of both wheels are the same, made non-separable and cannot be dismantled from the shafts.
The outer hinge consists of a housing in which a three-stud joint with rollers rotating on needle bearings is rigidly fixed, and a fist made integral with the drive shaft. With mutual angular displacements of the body and the knuckle of the hinge, the rollers of the three-stud rollers roll in the longitudinal grooves of the knuckle.
The body of the outer hinge with a splined shank enters the splined hole of the wheel hub and is fastened with a hub bearing nut.
The outer joints of both drives and the inner joint of the right drive are lubricated with MOBIL CVJ 825 BLACK STAR grease for life.
Replenishment or replacement of lubricant, as well as any other maintenance of the wheel drive shafts during the operation of the vehicle is not required. The owner of the car only needs to monitor the condition of the protective covers of the hinges and the clamps for their fastening, as well as the condition of the oil seal of the bearing of the inner hinge of the left drive. A damaged cover must be replaced as soon as possible, since the ingress of dirt into the lubricant causes rapid wear of the hinge parts and failure, and damage to the rubber boot or seal of the bearing of the inner hinge of the left drive will lead to oil leakage from the gearbox and its failure. When installing a new hinge cover, the collars of its fastening should also be replaced with new ones.
If the outer joint fails, the entire actuator assembly must be replaced, and if the inner joint of the actuator fails, only the joint can be replaced.
The bearing (complete with an oil seal) of the inner joint of the left wheel drive is supplied as spare parts along with a protective cover.
The same bearing is used on Renault cars: Megan, Scenic, Clio, Twingo, Kangoo; Citroën Saxo; Peugeot 106; Volvo: 440, 460, 480. But the protective cover of the hinge is different for these cars.

The history of the birth of such a class as crossovers has a multi-stage development. Briefly, these stages can be listed something like this: a passenger station wagon acquired all-wheel drive, then received increased ground clearance, later acquired its own body, more reminiscent of a real SUV, which later changed and began to look like modern hatchbacks. Recently, history has taken a new turn - SUVs have increasingly begun to lose one of the leading axles and reduce their ground clearance to a moderate level. If we continue to think like this, it turns out that the car presented today - Renault Sandero Stepway - is the pinnacle of this evolution?

I already foresee how many negative reviews will appear on our site after the publication of this test. How so? Has the publication covering only all-wheel drive models of cars rolled down to tests of ordinary passenger cars? I will not argue, of course, in most situations, four-wheel drive is preferable. But how many of our readers have 4x4 vehicles? And Russian reality makes it very common to drive off the asphalt, and here often the winner is not even the one whose all four wheels can cling to the road, but the one whose geometry allows not to hang on the bottom.

And in the city? Is it possible that in order to cross a curb or overcome a deep puddle at the entrance of a new building, all owners of true SUVs are in a hurry to move the transfer case control lever to the AWD position? I think no. In addition, owning a car with all-wheel drive a priori requires more substantial expenses than a modest mono-wheel drive passenger car. Do you think that in vain most of the supposedly SUVs driving around America have only one drive axle? Or look at the offers of salons selling modern crossovers: almost every second model has a mono-drive modification. And if there is a supply, then there is certainly a demand.

Finally, I will make a small digression into history for those who did not find the distant Soviet times. Do you know what SUV was then the most popular? "Zaporozhets"! If you park the Stepway in a row where only crossovers will stand, then, perhaps, no one will doubt that this car is of the same kind of tribe as them. A lean silhouette, short overhangs and even a plastic body kit that protects the lower part of the body around the perimeter from minor scratches only reinforce this similarity. What else? Ground clearance? So in this parameter, our hatchback looks no worse than most of the all-wheel drive cars we have. Which, however, is not surprising: the progenitor of today's hero - the Renault Logan sedan - was originally created based on countries whose inhabitants, like you and me, will dream of a modern road network for a long time, and therefore it has a considerable clearance - almost 160 mm . The Sandero hatchback, having the same ground clearance, but a smaller wheelbase, looks better in geometric terms, and the Stepway is also raised by 20 mm in relation to it.

As a result, if we talk about the exterior, then here the car, of course, is at its best, which cannot be said about its interior.

Probably not in vain I still remembered the good old "Zaporozhets". As in the hero of many Soviet jokes, the desire to reduce the cost of a car comes through in many decisions when developing interior elements. Of course, the deliberate simplicity, coupled with the defiantly rough finishing materials inherent in the Logan of the first years of production, has already remained far in the past. But still, when compared with modern representatives of the crossover clan, the interior of the Sandero looks frankly cheap. The picture is smoothed out by light door handles imitating expensive aluminum and inserts on the center console.

Otherwise, even the most sophisticated modification of the Stepway does not let you forget that the machine is aimed at a poor buyer. Many of the decisions are all the more incomprehensible. Well, why not, for example, place the keys for the power windows not on the center console, but in a normal place - door handles or make the pockets of the same doors a little wider? There are enough such remarks in relation to the Stepway salon, but we will still stop the further development of this topic. Are we accustomed to all the jambs of ergonomics of native UAZs to catch cockroaches in a car offered for almost the same price? Moreover, there are no problems with landing behind the wheel, all controls work as they should and without any extra effort, and on the road the car shows habits, if not a driver car, then certainly above average. Engine power is enough in any mode, the gear ratios in the gearbox are well chosen. But the most important thing is the suspension: not every crossover has such energy intensity - even when driving along a broken country road at a decent speed, there are no breakdowns, and it hides the coating profile perfectly.

If without fanaticism

The last stage of testing is a broken primer. Of course, bearing in mind that we do not have the opportunity, if necessary, to transfer part of the torque to the rear axle, we found the path, although with a noticeably rugged terrain, but with a fairly hard surface. Suspension moves were quite off-road. Even on some very treacherous bends, they managed to maintain traction on both front wheels. In general, we can say that the experiment was a success: even the absence of a second leading axle did not stop Stepway in the fight against the crossroads. Of course, we carefully thought out the trajectory of movement and tried to carefully go around the treacherous wet gullies. Or maybe this is sometimes where the probability of success lies - after all, knowing that his car is a priori not an all-terrain vehicle, few people will dive into a pool of mud

Having overcome a section that not every SUV obeys, Stepway proved that it can become an alternative to a crossover, and in terms of its geometric parameters it clearly surpasses most ordinary cars. For those who believe that an SUV has no alternative, I can answer: for the amount spent on the Renault Sandero Stepway, in our market you will be offered only an UAZ. So choose for yourself. However, if you have money, why not have both?
