What are the best winter tires to choose. What is better to choose winter tires The best studded tires

Winter is coming, in anticipation of it, we conducted a test and made a rating of winter tires 2016-2017. We took 5 sets well-known manufacturers tires. And tested in various weather conditions. The choice of tires was based on operation in the average Russian winter. With fluctuations in temperature and weather phenomena. From this calculation, all the tires presented in the test are studded.

According to 2016 data, one of the most common and sold tire sizes is 195/65 r15. It is tires of this size that will stand on our car.

List of tested tires for the season 2016-2017

  • Continental Ice Contact 2;
  • Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice Arctic;
  • Michelin X Ice North 3;
  • Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8;
  • Pirelli Ice Zero.

And so, we have the most latest developments the best tire manufacturers. It is worth mentioning that a number of really noteworthy specimens were not included in our test. And then our rating increased by 3 times, but nothing can be done, by the next winter season we will try to catch up.

The tests were carried out under the following temperature conditions:

  1. At an air temperature of +5 ˚С (slush).
  2. At an air temperature of -10 ˚С (snow).
  3. At an air temperature of -25 ˚С (ice).

The test included:

  • acceleration;
  • braking;
  • controllability.

It remains to give a subjective assessment of controllability. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 proved to be the best on ice and in corners. When accelerating and braking, 190 spikes do not have much advantage. But they hold the road and make maneuvers much safer on this model. Better Handling on an icy surface.

The Pirelli Ice Zero handles the snowy road best, whether it's snowy or porridge. But comfort suffers because of the hard rubber. But the Goodyear UltraGrip Ice Arctic proved to be the worst, you can fly off the road simply by changing lanes, in the absence of a track.

But on asphalt, the Goodyear UltraGrip Ice Arctic proved to be the best, removing water well from under the contact patches and showing good stability.

Top winter tires

  1. Continental IceContact 2 - the best acceleration and braking performance on ice, does not carry away in corners, performs well both on snow and on asphalt. They have 186 spikes, the price is around 4800 rubles, which makes it the most expensive.
  2. Pirelli Ice Zero is the golden mean between all weather conditions, only ride comfort and a more reliable material from which the spike is made were not enough to reach the first place. They have 130 spikes, the price is around 3200 rubles. The lowest price.
  3. Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 - made a compromise by increasing the number of studs, reducing the depth of their cutting into the surface. What affected the acceleration and braking on a snowy road. But they have the best performance on an icy road. They have 190 spikes, the price is around 4700 rubles.
  4. Michelin X-Ice North 3 - good braking performance on asphalt, and good stability in all weather conditions. Not the best acceleration and braking performance in other weather conditions, as well as problems with breaking spikes, did not allow to rise above. They have 97 spikes, the price is around 3800 rubles.
  5. Goodyear UltraGrip Ice Arctic - came in last place due to its snow stability and poor quality rubber manufacturing. They have 110 spikes, the price is around 4500 rubles.

The entire top showed decent and very close results in the test. And even the last place is a good tire for driving in the harsh Russian winters. When testing, we used ABS systems And traction control because everything modern tires are made with them in mind.

The approaching winter makes significant adjustments to the family budgets of motorists. To feel confident on a snowy icy road, you have to change your iron horses' shoes into winter tires. Yes, and the legislation clearly requires moving in the cold season exclusively on wheels that correspond to the season. The cost of new tires sometimes goes off scale, and you want to spend your hard-earned money, receiving in return quality product. Before contacting a dealer or an auto shop, it is worth studying the rating of winter tires 2017.

What winter tires are

The range of wheels offered by manufacturers for operation in the winter is quite wide. They differ in cost, the presence of spikes, technical characteristics and consumer reviews. It is not easy for an unprepared motorist to navigate this abundance.

Basically, the entire range of winter tires can be divided into three groups:

  • studded wheels scandinavian type - they are designed for operation in the harsh conditions of the northern winter with heavy snowfalls and permanent icing;
  • studless scandinavian tires- better suited for trips in northern cities, where you can often find areas of dry asphalt;
  • winter tires without studs of the Central European type- ideal for trips in moderately mild winters with frequent thaws and low frosts.

Which winter tires are best for your climate is, of course, up to you to decide.

Who is testing

Many respected European motoring clubs and specialized automotive magazines have been testing winter tires for many years and regularly publish their results. These data often play a decisive role for the average consumer when choosing tires for the winter period. Harsh legislation, backed up by hefty fines, makes Europeans take seriously seasonal change rubber. There are also domestic research and testing of wheels. All of them allow you to make a real rating of winter tires with confidence.

Of the European organizations involved in expertise professionally, it is worth highlighting the following structures:

  • ADAC– this respected German car club has existed for more than a century, its tests are carried out with the utmost care;
  • Auto Bild- the magazine is published in almost forty countries of the world, the expert judgment of the famous publication does not raise any doubts;
  • Tuulilasi– a specialized Finnish magazine is considered a recognized professional appraiser of the quality of automotive products;
  • Teknikens Warld– the Swedish publication has rightfully earned the status of a respected European expert.

The domestic list is not so wide, but no less professional:

  • "Behind the wheel"- one of the most famous Russian magazines for motorists;
  • "Autoreview"- the most popular domestic edition constantly holds independent tests, involving the most professional experts for evaluation.

Based on the findings of these researchers, we can make a brief overview of winter tires 2017.

Rating of winter studded tires

The following criteria are mainly used to evaluate these tires:

  • acceleration and braking dynamics in different road conditions - ice, snow, wet asphalt, dry highway;
  • degree of controllability;
  • noise.

The best winter studded tires of 2017, according to international experts, are ranked as follows:

Pirelli Ice Zero. This popular model of the Italian manufacturer has been winning the palm for several years now. Among its undoubted advantages are excellent performance on all types of coatings. The main disadvantage of the researchers consider the high noise level. Experts believe that such results are achieved due to the original carbide double insertion of spikes.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9. Some experts give gold to this particular product of the famous Finnish brand. The new member of the Hakkapeliitta range has been refined for four years in the company's production laboratories. A feature of the model is two types of spikes. This allows you to better hold the road and improves handling.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7. Agree, a manufacturer from a northern country knows the secrets of driving on ice and snow. The seventh model from this model range for several years, it has confidently taken a place in the top five of the best studded wheels. "Bear claw" is the name given to the spikes used in this product. They are not subject to tilt and provide reliable grip in difficult road conditions.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8. This is already a serious claim to the title. the best manufacturer studded rubber. Three models at once, which got into the high lines of the rating - such a success does not require comments. The "eight" used thirty percent more spikes than the previous model. As negative side experts note a soft sidewall, which can cause damage to the slope when trying to leave the track.

Continental Ice Contact 2. This is not new to the tire market, but leaving the top lists German manufacturer doesn't seem to be going to. Experts note good handling and predictability on all types pavement. The disadvantages include increased ability to aquaplaning. Rubber has 196 spikes, but at the same time it is quiet.

Rating of winter non-studded tires of the Scandinavian type

It is generally accepted that non-studded tires behave better on asphalt than studded ones. It is more suitable for constant city driving, if in your metropolis, of course, it is customary to remove snow, and not wait until it melts.

Continental ContiViking Contact 6. The German development is really worthy of all praise - excellent dynamic qualities, low braking distances, good handling, low noise. The examination showed only one negative point - the wheel's tendency to hydroplaning.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R. These slopes will provide you with confident movement on an icy snowy winter road. On dry pavement, their performance will be somewhat worse than that of the competing German leaders. In general, the reviews of experts are very positive.

Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice 2. The famous model of a respected manufacturer has been in the first lines of the ratings for several years. Excellent performance on ice and snow cover is somewhat smeared by uncertain driving on wet asphalt. On a dry track, the tires behave exceptionally - the experts' ratings are the highest.

Sava Eskimo Ice. Regarding these wheels, the opinions of expert commissions differ somewhat. However, this does not prevent them from taking pride of place among the leaders. The discrepancies relate to recommendations where, nevertheless, rubber behaves better - on snow or on asphalt. Definitely, Sava Eskimo Ice provides comfortable movement on a winter road.

Pirelli Ice Zero. The Italian leader of the previous ranking was in fifth place due to low results on the ice. However, braking performance on snow and wet pavement allow the driver to feel confident behind the wheel of the car.

The best winter tires of the Central European type

For mild winters, which are typical of the southern part Russian Federation, you need just such seasonal tires.

Continental Winter Contact TS 860. All tests in which this german product, proved its undisputed leadership. The experts did not express any comments on the operation of the wheel - all marks were set at the highest level.

Nokian WR D4. A very good option for a mild winter. All experts agree on only one minus - behavior on wet pavement. Rubber is prone to early hydroplaning, but this is more than offset by confident behavior on ice and complete predictability.

Pirelli Cinturato Winter. The Italian manufacturer once again confirms the high quality of its products, getting into the first lines of the rating. The tire works confidently on wet pavement, feels good on ice and in snowy conditions. The comments of experts concerned behavior on a dry road.

Goodyear EagleUltra Grip. One of the most the best tires for snowy winters. For the balance of properties and characteristics, these tires were especially noted by the German ADAC automobile club. Its experts talk about confident behavior wheels on all types of road surface.

Bridgestone Blizzak LM001. These tires are not subject to aquaplaning, they handle well on snow, they behave confidently on dry pavement. The disadvantages include a long braking distance on wet roads. Despite the good results in general, the tires did not score the highest marks in any of the tests.

Safety first

Many car enthusiasts approach the question of which winter tires are better to choose from the side of the wallet. When making a purchase, they select tires based on the planned and available funds. This approach is due to the considerable prices for quality products.

It is worth noting that the purchase of inexpensive models of little-known manufacturers turns into the following problems:

  • unpredictable behavior on a slippery snowy road;
  • poor management;
  • high noise level;
  • hydroplaning;
  • reduced service life.

Creating an emergency situation on the road can not only become cause of the accident but also damage the health of the participants traffic. The choice of winter tires must be made taking into account the operating conditions, the nature of the climate and the recommendations of experts. Remember that imaginary savings can affect your safety.

Friction, or non-studded winter tires(commonly known as Velcro) from year to year increase their market share, becoming the choice of an increasing number of motorists. Therefore, the question of how effectively such tires will cope with their direct duties in full-fledged road conditions is very relevant for domestic drivers. And an exhaustive answer to it can only be given by full-fledged sea trials carried out in "combat" conditions.

In general, friction tires (there is a “studless” mark on their sidewalls, which means “without studs” in English) are divided into two groups:

  • The first is tires for harsh northern winters(they are also “Scandinavians”), which are designed for operation on snow and ice, which is why their tread is made of soft rubber (50-55 Shore units).
  • The second is “shoes” for warm Central European conditions (“Europeans”), which are primarily focused on wet asphalt, which is why they have not only a harder compound, but also developed grooves that allow them to more effectively resist hydroplaning and sliding on snow slush .

In Russia, "Scandinavians" are more common - this is due to frosty and snowy winters in our country. As for Central European tires, they are chosen only by those car owners who do not leave the city limits in winter, but move mainly along cleared roads that are constantly treated with chemistry.

That is why nine sets of Scandinavian-type tires with a size of 225/45 R17, which is popular with owners of golf-class cars, were selected for testing. First of all, the products of tire manufacturers included in the "big five" manufacturers of automotive "shoes" got tested - these are Bridgestone Blizzak VRX, Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 2, Michelin X-Ice 3, Continental ContiVikingContact 6 and Pirelli Ice Zero FR (new season) . They were accompanied by expensive Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 tires, new Hankook Winter i*cept iZ2 and Dunlop Winter Maxx WM01 models, as well as the most affordable of all participants Toyo Observe GSi-5, which are well known to Russian motorists.

To carry out the tests, one of the test sites was chosen, located in the northern part of the earth's hemisphere and allowing a wide range of various tests, during which the air temperature was kept in the range from -2 to -18 ºC. The tire carrier turned out to be one of the cars of the popular “C” class, equipped with ABS, ASR, ESP and other auxiliary electronics.

In order for friction tires to show the most accurate results, the ice must be clean, as even light snow or bright sun can significantly distort them. That is why, for greater accuracy of the final figures, all measurements were repeated six, or even more, times.

And the first exercise was to accelerate from 5 to 30 km / h on an icy straight, where the car, “shod” in Dunlop tires, performed at its best, it took him only six seconds to do this. Only one tenth of a second was behind them by Nokian, while Hankook and Bridgestone trailed behind (they finished in 7.3 and 7.4 seconds respectively).
As for braking from 30 to 5 km/h, the Nokian tires showed themselves more effectively than the rest - they only slightly exceeded 15 meters. A little worse Continental tires. Bridgestone and Pirelli signed up as outsiders, who needed 17.5 meters to slow down.

In order to evaluate the lateral properties, the tests continued on the ice circle, and in cloudy weather - under such conditions, the results are noticeably more stable (but in any case, eight to ten circles were wound on each set of tires). And better than the rest, they “bite” into the surface of the Continental tires, on which the circle obeyed the car in 26 seconds, and a little more than half a second they lost to Nokian. The slowest steel toyo tires, which gave out 28.8 seconds on measurements.

Exercising in the snow is less demanding on the vagaries of nature, with the exception of heavy snowfall: most often fresh flakes are slippery. To assess the longitudinal grip, a long platform was used, which allowed the car to accelerate from a standstill to 40 km/h, and then slow down to 5 km/h.
Hankook and Pirelli tires accelerated faster than others on snow, while Bridgestone and Dunlop were at the opposite end of the rating. In braking, the balance of power has changed a bit: the leaders were Continental and Pirelli, and the outsiders were Goodyear, Bridgestone and Michelin. But even the last “troika” cannot be fully called the loser, since only a difference of 4% separated it from the first results.

Unfortunately, the lack of compacted snow at the test site did not allow for the “rearrangement”, however, this gap was more than compensated for by evaluating the handling on specially prepared tracks with ice and snow cover.

Not all exercises can be measured - for example, controllability and patency can only be assessed subjectively. And the first test for all tires was the assessment of directional stability - here Bridgestone, Goodyear, Continental, Nokian and Hankook signed up as leaders, who distinguished themselves by stable straight line retention at high speed and quick reactions to steering movements with soft lane changes. As for the rest, all of them, without exception, received only minor comments.
To assess the controllability, a track with a set of turns of various steepness was used. In this discipline, you accelerate faster and more often wield the “helm” than when assessing directional stability. And the most understandable behavior in this case was demonstrated by Hankook, Toyo and Nokian tires, but on Bridgestone and Dunlop the car turned out to be the most “nervous” due to the low information content of the steering wheel and delays in reactions.
Nokian and Pirelli tires showed the best cross-country ability - a car “shod” in them confidently starts and maneuvers in deep snow, and, if necessary, is easily selected in reverse (this is the case when moving forward is no longer possible). But Bridgestone, Michelin, Toyo and Goodyear let us down - in snowdrifts they allow you to start only under tension, in case of slipping they often “dig in”, and the maneuverability is not entirely confident.

When assessing controllability on ice with their refined reactions and high reliability conquered Michelin tires, and only slightly lost to them Continental, Nokian and Pirelli. But the rest of the subjects also proved themselves on the good side, so there were no obvious outsiders in this discipline.

Having completed the cycle winter tests”, held at sub-zero temperatures, it was the turn of the asphalt exercises, during which the air warmed up to +4 to +7 ºC, and the first step was to evaluate the economy. Hankook and Nokian were the least "gluttonous", while Dunlop and Toyo tires "eat" more than others. But even between the leaders and outsiders, the difference in the results turned out to be insignificant - only 200 ml per 100 km of run.

During the warm-up lap at speeds from 110 to 130 km/h, road holding on asphalt was evaluated. And here, Michelin tires showed a clear keeping of the set course, as well as an informative effort on the steering wheel (almost like on flight tires in the warm season). On the good side, Dunlop, Goodyear and Pirelli proved themselves, while Hankook and Toyo had a lot of questions: they upset with an uninformative “steering wheel” and a certain “braking” when adjusting the direction of movement.
To test the noise and smoothness of the ride, several tracks were used: initially, the car was tested on each set of tires on a good surface, after which it “moved” onto roads with potholes, cracks and crevices. The palm in this discipline went to Continental - in terms of smoothness and acoustic comfort, they found themselves "ahead of the rest." Low noise was also demonstrated by Goodyear. Dunlop, Toyo and Michelin turned out to be tougher and more “grumpy” than others, and Pirelli distinguished themselves by not the best smoothness. They received similar comments - vibrations on small bumps, sharp shocks on medium and large potholes, a feeling of pumped tires.

The final chord in the tests was braking on dry and wet pavement. To make the results more accurate, the exercise was carried out in one track per narrow lane, and after each measurement, the brakes cooled down. On dry pavement (braking is carried out from 80 to 5 km/h), the Goodyear tires “ran” less than the rest – it took the car 28.8 meters to stop on them. A meter loss to the leader was shown by Continental and Michelin tires, and Toyo trailed behind (33.1 meters).

On wet pavement (deceleration occurs from 60 to 5 km/h), the alignment of forces was a little different: Continental tires took first place with a result of 19.7 meters, while Goodyear was content with second position, half a meter behind. As for the outsider, he remained the same: Toyo's braking distance exceeded the leadership figures by six meters at once.

Overview of winter tires:49 models of the season 2016-2017

Winter, as you know, comes to our country suddenly. Therefore, we are already starting a review of tires that will be presented on the Russian market in the winter season of 2016-2017. Of course, this is not a complete catalog - the review includes those models that were emphasized by the manufacturing companies themselves

ContiVikingContact 6

This non-studded tire is specially designed for Scandinavian and Russian winters. When changing the model, the developers made a special emphasis on high grip on any type of surface. This versatility is achieved through a three-piece asymmetric tread pattern made from an innovative softness-optimized rubber compound. The outer part of the tread provides grip on dry pavement, the middle one on ice, and the inner part on snow. The tread design combination contributes to good performance in the ever-changing city road conditions. The design of the sipes makes the tire resistant to hydroplaning on wet pavement, and the tread blocks connected by bridges work like snow chains on snow. This season ContiVikingContact 6 includes 97 items for cars and for SUVs.

CONTINENTAL IceContact 2

A new generation studded tire with more ribs and less weight. Starting this season, the IceContact 2 tire is available with ContiSeal anti-puncture technology, the sealant of which seals punctures up to 5 mm in diameter without subsequent repair, as well as ContiSilent technology, which, thanks to a layer of special foam, significantly reduces noise and vibration levels. Also in the tire, compared to its predecessor ContiIceContact, handling on dry roads was improved by 9%, on ice by 2%, and the transmission of braking and traction power on ice increased by 8%. Another feature of the tire is the asymmetric tread pattern. Increased tire life and the safety of the studs are ensured by the technology of double firing, due to which the tire and the stud are almost a single whole. The IceContact 2 tire line this season will include 112 items for passenger cars and SUVs.

CORDIANT SNOW CROSS

A characteristic feature of this tire is the new patented Spice-Cor stud produced by the well-known company Scason. The body of the stud is made of aluminum and the carbide insert is made of tungsten carbide. The optimal shape of the stud hole ensures both the reliable retention of the stud in the tire and the transmission of high traction on ice. The modified design of the sub-groove layer enhances the impact of the stud on the ice. In addition, the original design of the stud body prevents its rotation in the tread layer and increases the reliability of holding the stud in the tire. The new chemical composition of the rubber compound of the tread extends the temperature range of the tire to -53 ° C. According to test results, new technologies have reduced the braking distance on ice by 12% compared to the previous generation of tires. In 2016 tire line Cordiant Snow Cross expanded by 25 sizes, and now the range is 35 sizes with landing diameters 14 to 18 inches. The range also includes reinforced tires for cars of the SUV segment (13 sizes with landing diameters from 16 to 18 inches).

DUNLOP SP WINTER ICE02

A studded tire with a stud having a rectangular core. This shape, as well as the large stud base, provides increased penetration and stable performance when driving on ice. Specially designed for the size and shape of the spike seat, which increased the reliability of fastening. For optimum grip on ice, the studs are arranged in 16 rows. The triangular pattern of the central part of the tread contributes to the stability of the steering. For the same purpose, the blocks of the shoulder zone are connected to each other - a similar design ensures the rigidity of the tread blocks. Intersecting grooves effectively remove water and snow mass from the contact patch. On the Russian market, the tire is presented in 46 sizes with landing diameters from 13 to 20 inches.

DUNLOP GRAND TREK ICE 02

The design of these studded tires uses a unique technology - 3D Miura-Ori sipes with special edges that prevent the tread blocks from breaking, stabilizing performance and promoting uniform wear. Long zigzag sipes improve tire grip on snow and ice. The soft rubber compound top layer provides improved traction on snowy and icy roads, while a stiffer base layer holds the studs and further enhances handling characteristics. The tire is presented in 42 standard sizes with landing diameters from 15 to 21 inches.

DUNLOP WINTER MAXX WM01

A studless tire designed with a material that has optimal elasticity and strength. Its features: increased length of the sipes with sharper edges, durable block material that prevents them from breaking, rigidity of the tread with an asymmetric design that provides stability in turns and lane changes, increased breaker rigidity. The tire is presented in 50 sizes with landing diameters from 13 to 19 inches.

DUNLOP WINTER MAXX SJ8

The material from which the tire is made has become stronger, but at the same time it has not lost its elasticity, which contributes to reliable grip on icy road irregularities, and the strength of the rubber prevents the tread blocks from breaking. And here, as in the Grandtrek Ice 02 model, MiuraOri 3D slats are used. The combination of transverse and longitudinal grooves provides not only reliable grip on snow, but also self-cleaning of the tread. Increased stiffness in the shoulder area improves the tire's behavior in corners and when changing lanes, while the central rib provides stable directional stability. The tire is presented in 50 standard sizes with landing diameters from 15 to 21 inches.

GISLAVED NORD FROST 200

The new studded tire is designed specifically for harsh winter conditions, with an emphasis on value for money and safety and durability. The tire, produced at the Continental plant in Kaluga, instead of the usual symmetrical swept tread pattern, has a directional asymmetric pattern. This scheme, worked out on several generations of Continental winter tires, has proven its effectiveness. The new model received an ultra-light stud with a special triangular shape of the carbide tip, which made it possible to improve dynamic performance on ice compared to previous model. In addition, the tire uses an innovative rubber compound that maintains elasticity and a high level of grip in severe frosts. The tire line this season will include 64 items for passenger cars and SUVs.

GISLAVED SOFT FROST 200

The new friction tire is designed specifically for use in urban areas, where wet asphalt and slush prevail for the most part. But German engineers also made sure that this tire behaved reliably both on ice and in deep snow. The main difference between the novelty and its predecessor lies in the asymmetric tread pattern, in which the outer part is responsible for handling, and the inner part is responsible for grip on various types of winter roads and for the rapid removal of water and snow porridge from the contact patch. The new tread pattern and soft rubber compound significantly improved traction, lateral grip and handling on ice, snow and wet pavement compared to the previous model. The Gislaved SoftFrost 200 line this season will include 31 items for cars and SUVs.

HANKOOK Winter i*Pike RS (W419)

Studded tire with improved performance on ice and snow. The tire profile has been modified in order to distribute the pressure more evenly in the contact patch of the tire with the road. This improves traction, cornering control and road holding. Narrow stiffener special form in the center of the treadmill, it effectively squeezes snow and slush into wide grooves that lead them out through the arcuate grooves in the shoulder areas. This solution improves grip and traction on snowy roads. The updated tread compound has a higher traction coefficient, which also improves traction and braking performance.

HANKOOK Winter i*cept evo2 (W320)

Winter i*cept evo2 is a high-speed tire that has increased the number of tread block rows around the circumference from 64 to 80. This solution directly in the contact patch provides more effective penetration of the tread elements into the snow and improved traction. The 3D sipe technology provides sipe blocking, which in turn limits the deformation of the blocks and allows the use of softer rubber compounds in the tread. The grooves located at an optimal angle contribute to the self-cleaning of the tread, and the edges of the tread blocks effectively bite into the packed snow. Only two longitudinal grooves are used to drain water from the contact patch, but their width is increased by 30%, and the angle of inclination is optimized in such a way that this design not only increases the amount of water passed through, but also helps to reduce the noise level. The tire is presented in 46 standard sizes.

HANKOOK Winter i*Cept iZ2 (W616)

The studless novelty Hankook Winter i*Cept iZ2 (W616) thanks to the directional pattern guarantees comfortable movement on snowy, icy roads and melted snow. The model is designed specifically for the winter conditions of Northern and Eastern Europe. The Siberian Husky tread pattern and Hankook's patented 3D sipe technology provide efficient traction, fast braking and high handling. Compared to the previous model, the new tires feature 20% more sipes and guarantee better grip on ice. The specially developed silicon compound keeps the tread elastic even under the most severe conditions. low temperatures and provides a high level of traction and braking.

MATADOR MP 30 SIBIR ICE 2

The design of the new studded tire, produced at the Continental plant in Kaluga, clearly shows the features of the "senior" models of the Continental concern. Its technical characteristics have been improved in all key indicators of tire behavior on ice and snow. The symmetrical directional tread pattern with two longitudinal ribs provides improved handling and directional stability. Large blocks with an increased number coupling edges provide increased grip on snow, and their location allows you to quickly remove water and snow porridge from the contact patch. The double-flange stud has increased wear resistance, and a higher degree of interaction between the stud and the tread block contributes to a high level of safety. The Matador MP 30 Sibir Ice 2 tire line this season will include 31 items for passenger cars and SUVs.

MICHELIN LATITUDE X-ICE NORTH 2+

This tire is designed for harsh environments. winter conditions and is designed for various types of SUVs. Based on internal testing, the Latitude X-Ice North 2+ has the following performance improvements over its predecessor, the Latitude X-Ice North 2: 10% shorter braking distance on ice and 5% on snow, and 15% improved acceleration. dynamics on ice and 10% on snow. Tire used whole line innovative technologies. For example, in a two-layer tread, the inner, base, layer is made of a thermosetting mixture, which increases the level of stud attachment and is able to change its characteristics depending on temperature. The composition of the outer layer of the tread contains an increased content of silicon dioxide, which allows maintaining sufficient elasticity at low temperatures and the necessary rigidity at high temperatures. The double carcass provides high resistance to sidewall and tread damage, as well as improved handling for large and heavy vehicles. In the 2016-2017 season, the tire is available in 45 sizes with bore diameters from 16 to 21 inches. The Latitude X-Ice North 2+ is also available in Zero Pressure sizes to fit vehicles such as the BMW X5 and X6.

MICHELIN X-ICE 3

Thanks to the integration of a whole range of technologies, the tire is focused on providing several characteristics: safety in any winter conditions, the ability to drive at high speed, and a long mileage resource. According to the results of internal testing, compared with the previous generation of tires, the performance of the X-Ice 3 improved by 7% in terms of braking on ice, and by 17% in acceleration on ice. Implemented innovations that contribute to safety in the conditions winter driving, include a new tread block configuration, Z-shaped sipes, micropumps and sawtooth edges. Along with new design solutions for the tread, attention was also paid to the rubber compound with a significant content of silicon dioxide. In addition, the tire has a stronger sidewall. This winter season, the tire is offered in 63 sizes. with landing diameters from 13 to 19 inches. In a number of standard sizes Model X-Ice 3 is available with Zero Pressure technology.

MICHELIN X-ICE NORTH 3

Studded tire for passenger cars and small crossovers. Compared to the previous generation, this model offers a 10% shorter braking distance on ice, improved stud retention and a stronger sidewall. This result was achieved thanks to the use of a number of original solutions by Michelin engineers. For example, the Smart Stud technology, which includes three innovations patented by the company: a thermosetting rubber compound of the lower tread layer, a special technology for removing ice chips and, in fact, the conical stud itself. This season, the X-Ice North 3 model is offered in 67 sizes with landing diameters from 14 to 20 inches.

MICHELIN ALPIN 5

Non-studded tire for use in mild winter conditions. It has improved performance not only on wet and dry surfaces, but also on snowy roads. Its design combines two advanced technologies: one of them concerns the tread blocks that provide contact with the road, the second - the composition of the tread rubber compound using sunflower oil for more effective work tires at low temperatures. The tire features a directional tread pattern with deep grooves and numerous curved blocks. Offset longitudinal channels effectively drain water and reduce the likelihood of aquaplaning. New protector Michelin Alpin 5 received 12% more segments. The number of sipes has been increased by 16%, which improves grip and flotation on snowy roads. “Michelin X-Ice North 3” is a new winter studded tire that incorporates a wide variety of innovative technologies developed by Michelin. Most of them are combined into one complex called “smart spike” (Smart Stud System) and includes:

  • A thermoset rubber compound that is used as an inner tread layer and is able to change its elasticity depending on temperature environment: at high temperatures, it becomes soft and the studs seem to be pressed into the tread, significantly improving grip on asphalt; at low temperatures, it becomes stiff, making the very fixation of the spikes more rigid and thereby increasing grip on icy surfaces.
  • The Ice Powder Remover technology is designed to remove ice chips and is a system of 6 wells that absorb this ice chips around each spike.
  • The design of the spike itself, which has the form of a cylinder with a cone-shaped tip, which is installed on a wide base, providing secure fixation spike.

The tread pattern of the “Michelin X-Ice North 3” tires received an increased number of gripping edges to improve grip on snowy roads. The angle of the drainage channels has also been changed, which increased the resistance to hydroplaning and slashplaning. These tires use the new Flex-Ice 3 tread compound, which contains proportionate natural and synthetic rubber for improved grip on wet roads. In addition, it contains silicon additives that contribute to wear resistance.
To reinforce the carcass of the tires, IronFlex technology was used, which consists in the use of an additional layer of steel threads and provides additional impact resistance.
