Corporation "Bogdan", known today primarily as a manufacturer of passenger vehicles, began its business with the sale of vehicles manufactured Russian manufacturers. The company grew and expanded the range of products sold. In 1996, KIA was added to the list of sold brands, and three years later Bogdan became a distributor of Hyuindai. The entire model range is Bogdan.

First steps in production

In 1998, with the acquisition of the Cherkasy Bus enterprise, Bogdan got its own production capacity. With this acquisition, the next important step in the development of the company became possible. Just a year later, it was possible to establish the production of Bogdan buses, which were sold on the domestic market, and by 2003 they began to be sold outside of Ukraine.

At the turn of the century, the assembly of car kits from the Volga Automobile Plant was organized. At the same time, as part of the trend towards the development of its own production capacities, the Lutsk Automobile Plant was acquired, where six years later it was established modern production buses and trolleybuses.

This was preceded by the conclusion of an agreement with Isuzu Motors Limited that the Bogdan company received the right not only to produce Isuzu buses at its facilities, but also to sell them on the territory of Ukraine under its own Bogdan brand, and for export - under the Isuzu brand .

Creation of a corporation

The date of the final registration of the company's legal status as an industrial and financial corporation is February 22, 2005, when the merger of more than twenty separate divisions and legal entities voluntarily united and became part of the Bogdan corporation.

A good start to the new association was given by the measures taken by the government to protect the domestic automaker. The introduction of a tax on imported cars served as a good incentive for the development of both the SKD assembly of cars and the full cycle of production within the country.

The year 2007 was marked by the launch of tourist-class Bogdan buses in production. At that time, the export line of products in the CIS and neighboring countries accounted for half of the production volumes.

The following year, large-scale production of trucks was launched, and factories were opened on the territory of Ukraine in Cherkassy, ​​one producing trucks and commercial vehicles and the second plant with a production line of passenger cars with a capacity of 120-150 thousand units per year. Successes are also observed in the serial production of modern trolleybuses.

In 2009, our own developments of a serial batch of Bogdan 2310 pick-up light commercial vehicles are being implemented. The changes also affected the name, now it is PJSC Automobile Company Bogdan Motors and the capitalization of LuAZ ended, after which all assets were transferred to OJSC LuAZ. This enterprise produced the first all-terrain vehicle LuAZ 969.

The export of passenger cars began in 2010. With the Czech company Cegelec was founded joint venture for the production of trolleybuses for the EU. In 2011, the production of small-class buses based on Hyundai was laid, and a number of contracts for the distribution of passenger cars of the Lifan and Great Wall brands were signed.

Corporation "Bogdan" is a modern enterprise in Ukraine for the full-scale production of passenger cars in the city of Cherkasy (SE "Auto Assembly Plant No. 2" PJSC "Automotive Company" Bogdan Motors ").


3.2. Story

The history of the production of passenger cars by the Bogdan corporation begins in 2000, when the first cars were made from the car kits of the Volga Automobile Plant (AvtoVAZ, Russia). Since then, the company has been investing heavily in the development, expansion and modernization of production. On June 20, 2008, the first national automobile industry enterprise was put into operation during the existence of independent Ukraine. The volume of investments in this project amounted to more than 330 million dollars.


3.3. Production capacity

The capacity of the enterprise is 120,000 - 150,000 cars per year. The enterprise has 2 car assembly workshops, 2 welding workshops, finishing, testing and logistics workshops, as well as a unique complex of car body lacquering and plastic painting. The presence of the process of applying the first soil (electrodeposition) favorably distinguishes it from similar industries in the post-Soviet space.

3.4. The lineup

Under licenses, the Corporation manufactures cars Bogdan-2110 (Lada 2110), Bogdan-2111 (Lada 2111), Hyundai Accent, Hyundai Elantra XD and Hyundai Tucson at its facilities. Recently, the Corporation has begun production of the Bogdan 2310 pickup truck, as well as Bogdan 2312 of its own design based on the Lada 2110. gas equipment. Testing and certification of the car are currently underway and the second version of the pick-up is being prepared - an onboard tent modification with a frame structure.


4. Trucks

The production of trucks is one of the promising activities of the Bogdan Corporation.

On September 9, 2008, the construction of an automobile plant for the SKD production of trucks in the city of Cherkasy was completed (SE "Auto Assembly Plant No. 3" OJSC "Automotive Company" Bogdan Motors ").

The production of buses "Bogdan" began in the year. Design feature of buses? Bogdan? is to use a single aggregate base Isuzu (Japan). It was with the start of the production of buses that Bogdan declared itself as a national automaker.

Along with the development of the production of buses and trolleybuses in Ukraine, the Corporation is actively working to organize production outside the country. The Corporation plans to manufacture its own buses and trolleybuses in Russia.


6. Enterprise JSC "Cherkasy bus"

The enterprise specializes in the production of buses "Bogdan" of a small class for the transport of passengers and special buses for national economic purposes. The enterprise is located in Cherkasy, has a closed production cycle and its own scientific and technical base.

6.1. Production capacity

The production capacity of the enterprise allows to produce up to 3,000 buses per year. The production includes full-scale production of the body and assembly of the bus with the installation of purchased units and assemblies

In 1999-2006, a complex re-equipment of production took place: a new painting section, a fiberglass shop, a new welding shop were built, a reconstruction was carried out industrial premises, gasification, new equipment purchased.

The main task of the enterprise is the production of buses of small, medium, large and extra-large class and trolleybuses of various modifications.


7.1. Production capacity

SE "ASZ No. 1" JSC "AK" Bogdan Motors "can produce up to 8,000 buses and trolleybuses per year. The enterprise is a press-preparation, bodywork, painting, assembly production, a complex for diagnostics, fine-tuning and delivery.

7.2. The lineup

The plant produces small, medium, large, extra-large buses and trolleybuses of various modifications, in particular, tourist, intercity, suburban, city, specialized and school buses.

We have been to LuAZ more than once. The same administrative building, the same Christmas trees at the entrance, the same buildings with brickwork, but outside the entrance we were met by a completely different plant. Now there is no hint of passenger car production, for many years, SKD-assembly of cars and trucks has not been carried out in Lutsk.

The plant has completely changed its profile and changed beyond recognition. Over the past 10 years, Lutsk has been creating a classic bus production, designed for the production of 8-9-10 meter, 12 and 18-meter buses and trolleybuses. And today, Bogdan Motors Automobile Assembly Plant No. 1 is, without exaggeration, the best bus plant in Ukraine. He could well be one of the best in Europe, but just a couple of years of growth in the car market were not enough.

Hard times
The crisis of 2008 caught Lutsk Automobile Plant in the midst of the reconstruction and construction of the 2nd stage of bus production, which, according to plans, was to be completed in 2009. In Lutsk, they managed to build 99% of the latest EISENMANN painting complex, designed for painting 12-meter bus bodies. Within the framework of this complex, even a cataphoresis line was built, consisting of 6 consecutive chambers and baths, where a 12-meter bus body is placed entirely. Confess a similar line on bus factories AUTO-Consulting could only be seen on newest factory MAN-Neoplan in Turkey launched in 2014.

It is to this plant German manufacturer moved all bus production from Europe. After a similar body line, buses exit with such a degree corrosion protection that they safely give a guarantee of 10-12 years.

But in Lutsk, the 2nd stage was never launched, although they managed to complete all the installation and construction work. For its rhythmic work, it is necessary to load 300 buses per month, and the Bogdan Motors Automobile Assembly Plant No. 1 produced only 144 buses in 2015. With such volumes, buses will be "golden". The line was mothballed until better times. But they don't all come.

But in the plans was also the 3rd stage. With its commissioning, Lutsk would produce 6.5 thousand buses a year. But the matter never came to its construction.

Now the plant is working on the areas of the 1st stage and can produce a maximum of 2.2 thousand cars per year (with 3-shift work). Capacities are limited throughput painting complex of 7 cameras. But in 3 shifts at the car factory they have not worked for a long time.

Nikolai Dzhula, director of the Auto Assembly Plant No. 1, calls from memory each buyer of 144 cars produced for last year buses and trolleybuses. He also remembers the specification of each model.

How Bogdan buses are made
Out of 36 thousand m2 production areas now only half are used. But in Lutsk they still make buses with clean slate metal. The production process begins in the procurement workshop, where equipment for laser cutting of metal was purchased. But blanks from pipes and corners are processed on old machines.

The press production, where the Volynyanka body was stamped, was completely curtailed, and the last large press was taken out of the plant a year ago. For the production of buses, only a few small press machines were left.

After the machine shop, the parts and blanks go to the body shop. Here, with the help of special equipment, the floor, sidewalls, and roof of the future bus are molded. By the way, the equipment at the "Auto Assembly Plant No. 1" is made completely independently. The stocks allow you to maintain the geometry, in accordance with the modifications.

In the paint shop, the bus body sequentially passes through 7 chambers, where, according to the technology, it is subjected to the following operations: degreasing, drying, priming, puttying, preparation for painting, painting, drying at a temperature of 60 degrees and final acceptance. It is the capacity of this workshop that determines maximum power factory in 2200 buses per year.

The painted body is then transported to the assembly shop, where, depending on the dimensions, it ends up on the appropriate assembly line. Car Assembly Plant No. 1 can simultaneously produce 8 and 10-meter buses, buses and trolleybuses 12 meters long and extra-large class cars up to 18 meters long.

lines assembly line designed for large volumes. Today, only a few pass through them. For example, on the line of 12-meter cars, we counted only 5 frames of future trolleybuses - this is a batch for Odessa.

On the line of buses of a small class there was a batch of Bogdan A221 buses for Kyiv and finished production school buses A069 under old contracts.

According to technology, after assembly, each bus must make test drive and go to the site of final delivery to the customer. Here it will be checked for leaks in a separate chamber, headlights, toxicity, condition paintwork and, if necessary, correct defects. Here, the bus is finally given the go-ahead for the transportation of passengers and the final act is signed.


Factory outlook
Euro-5 standards, which came into force in Ukraine on January 1, 2016, have changed the model policy of the enterprise. As the director of the enterprise Mykola Dzhula told us, the first Euro-5 buses in Lutsk were produced back in 2014 for Vinnytsia. Thanks to cooperation with IVECO, Automobile Assembly Plant No. 1 already has in model range two modifications of Euro-5: 10-meter model Bogdan A145.32 and urban 12-meter A701.32. Deliveries of city buses rest against the possibilities of city budgets and depend on the results of tenders. In Lutsk, they are ready to produce buses for the whole of Ukraine, but somehow it turns out that far from everywhere officials prefer Bohdans. Factory workers perceive each lost tender very painfully. In an environment where there are so few orders, this means weeks of plant downtime.

The situation with 8-meter buses is even more difficult. In this class, Euro-5 is not yet produced by the plant. In the workshop, we saw only a prototype Bogdan A221.15 with a gas engine. But for some reason they don’t make a special bet on the gas version in Lutsk, unlike their colleagues from the Cherkasy Bus. According to the director of the plant, Nikolai Dzhula, the delivery of the first Indian Ashok Leyland machine kits with Euro-5 engines is expected on June 15th. After some time, the 8-meter Euro-5 bus will be offered to carriers.

Bogdan Motors places special hopes on the European market. In cooperation with the Polish company Ursus, the plant managed to win a tender for the supply of 38 Bogdan-Ursus T70116 trolleybuses to the city of Lublin. This contract gave the plant an understanding of the level of quality and requirements in Europe for urban transport. The acceptance was very tough, but the plant coped. Yes, and trolleybuses were far from simple. Lublin "Bogdans" are equipped autonomous course, which allows you to lay new routes even where there is no contact network. These trolleybuses have a "squat" system at stops, which makes it more comfortable to enter the salon, as the trolleybus leans a few centimeters to starboard and approaches the curb of the stop. And also these "Bogdans" have an energy-saving door opening system, which allows you to open only those doors that passengers are going to use at the bus stop - this allows you to more effectively maintain the temperature in the cabin.

In addition to trolleybuses, the first 12-meter electric bus Bogdan A701.00 was also transferred to Lublin for trial operation. It has a power reserve of 120 km. The body for him was made using stainless steel - it is 2.5 times more expensive than ferrous metal. The electric bus has been running on the route in Poland for more than a year and has received a European certificate.

As plant director Nikolai Dzhula recalls: “Under the terms of the contract, we had to produce an electric bus in 2 months, and negotiations lasted almost six months. When we handed over the electric bus, I then told our partners that we had been bargaining longer than we were making the car.”

And frames became the key to such speed. The automobile plant managed to keep the design team and attract the best specialists from Lviv. This potential has saved the company more than once. For 10 years of the bus era, 20 models and 35 modifications were produced in Lutsk. AND bus brand"Bogdan" is known not only in Ukraine, but also in Poland, Georgia, Belarus and Russia.


Ironically, those trolleybuses that were decommissioned in Lublin after the deliveries of Bogdanov there were bought by Lutsk. Old Yelchs also drive past the car factory. Instead of their own "Bogdanov" ... Probably, the rise of "Auto Assembly Plant No. 1" will come when the local authorities in all cities realize that they need to buy vehicles of their own production.

The history of this enterprise knew both ups and downs. And the profile of activity during this time he had to change four times. At the Lutsk Automobile Plant (now Bogdan Motors), somewhere in a dark corner, they found a wonderful historical exposition. The factory workers not only saved it, but also restored it if possible. There is even the only surviving prototype ZAZ-969 (not LuAZ, but ZAZ).

And in the transport shop of "Bogdan Motors" there was a convertible truck based on the bus chassis of the Turkish Otoyol. As long as the enterprise honors and remembers its history, it is alive. They try to use the name LuAZ less and less often here, replacing it with simply “car factory” or “Bogdan car factory”. And the production of passenger cars in Lutsk can no longer be restored, neither Luaz-1301, nor even the primitive TPK-967 - the plant was completely reoriented to bus production, there is no passenger conveyor, and the last presses and dies used for the passenger program were taken out of the plant a year ago . Now - only buses.
