With growth in North America and China, global sales cars were estimated to have reached 87.4 million in 2015. This is stated in a study by IHS Automotive.
This is an increase of just 1.5% over 2014, the lowest increase since 2010. However, according to IHS experts, the industry will continue to recover from the global economic crisis, while growth is slowing around the world, including amid uncertainty in Russia and South America.
IHS estimates that North American passenger car sales increased 5.5% to 20.6 million units in 2015, driven by the continued recovery in the US market, where sales reached 17.5 million units (up 6.0%). The IHS study's results are similar to estimates by other firms, including Morgan Stanley and TrueCar, which previously forecast sales of more than 17 million in the United States as gasoline prices remain low, consumer confidence rises and funding is readily available.
Passenger car sales in China, meanwhile, are estimated to have risen 5.6% to 24.4 million in 2015. At the beginning of 2015, IHS forecast sales growth in China to 25 million units in 2015. However, despite greater access to credit, expansion of dealer networks and scrappage programs designed to boost sales, growth in passenger car sales declined, following a slowdown in the Chinese economy as a whole.
In 2015, IHS revised its growth forecasts down, partly due to uncertainty in Russia, which affected other markets in Eastern Europe. Passenger car sales in Russia, which is in a deep recession, dealing with a non-volatile currency and the prospect of a wider war in Ukraine, are estimated to have fallen 36% year-on-year in 2015 to just 1.6 million units, which half as compared to 2012 sales. At the beginning of 2015, IHS predicted a fall in sales to 1.8 million units.
On the contrary, car sales in Western Europe are estimated to have increased by 8.9% in 2015 compared to 2014 and reached 13.2 million units. India also posted strong growth in 2015, up 7.7% year-on-year, IHS reported, with domestic light vehicle sales rising to 2.8 million units.
IHS also recorded a weakening of the automotive sector in South America in 2015, where the largest market, Brazil, recorded a decline in passenger car sales by 26% compared to the previous year to 2.5 million, amid rising unemployment, falling household incomes and worsening credit conditions, as well as due to higher taxes.

* - data from IHS Automotive (2016 - forecast).
For 2016, IHS predicts growth in global passenger car sales to 89.8 million units.
The US auto market, supported by low interest rates on loans and low gasoline prices, will remain strong. Although interest rates will rise slightly, buying conditions will remain good, allowing the market to continue to rise in 2016 and 2017. IHS sees still strong potential to strengthen the US economy and increase employment, leading to growth American market up to 18 million units over the next two years.
In Western Europe, growth momentum is also strong, even after a recovery in 2015 well above expectations. The current forecast of 2.5-3.0% sales growth may even be revised upwards. However, some European markets peaked.
Optimism about sales activity in the Chinese market has risen sharply as the government announced measures to cut the car purchase tax for small cars. However, the continued volatility in the stock market may deter some buyers. Despite the slowdown in China's economy, IHS Automotive currently expects light vehicle sales to grow by 5-6% in 2016 - enough to increase sales by more than 1.3 million units.
For the Asia-Pacific region, 2016 will be a year of transition from a disappointing decline in sales in recent years to a rebound in growth. On key markets Thailand and Indonesia, a return to growth should begin in the second half of 2016, with growth expected to pick up in 2017. India's auto market is forecast to accelerate as lower energy prices and falling interest rates on auto loans will allow a return to double-digit growth for the first time since 2010.
For Brazil and Russia, 2016 is likely to be a difficult year. Both markets have been in decline for three years in a row, and 2016 is likely to be the fourth year in which the economy continues to decline. Brazil's auto market is likely to contract by 14 percent in 2015, according to IHS Automotive's forecast. In Russia, the passenger car market will continue to decline as well due to the ongoing effects of low oil prices, sanctions imposed on the Russian economy and the ruble exchange rate.
In 2015 German manufacturer cars Volkswagen stunned the world when it dethroned Toyota as the world's largest automaker by sales. In the first half of 2015 volkswagen sold 5.04 million vehicles from January to June, compared to 5.02 million sold by Toyota in the same period.
Analysts attributed Volkswagen sales growth to increased demand in Europe, where the market has grown at the fastest pace in more than five years. On the other hand, Toyota has suffered from declining demand in China, as well as the inability to reap the same benefits in Europe, despite the benefits the company received from the weakening Japanese yen.
True, already in autumn Toyota regained leadership in sales on the world market, and at the end of the year, the company's total sales amounted to about 10 million cars, against 9.93 million cars from Volkswagen. However, 2016 promises to be another year of competition between the two auto giants.

Sales statistics by car brands for the first 9 months of 2015 have been published. As in 2014, Toyota was the leader. Following her is American brand Ford. The third line in the ranking is occupied by Volkswagen. As you can see, despite the scandal with diesel engines, deutsche mark VW still stayed in the top three.
The economic situation in the world
The global economy in the second quarter of 2015 began to lose momentum due to the fall of emerging market economies. Thus, in the first quarter of 2015, the global economy grew by 2.7 percent, while in the second quarter the growth was 2.6 percent. The 1 percent drop in global economic growth is due to the financial crisis in Russia and Brazil, where the economy is falling due to the weakening of national currencies, falling oil prices and many other reasons.
Market Review
Thanks to the recovery of the European economy, due to the significant growth of all automotive markets North America(Canada, USA and Mexico), as well as due to the growth of the Chinese economy (though at a slower pace than in 2014), .
For example, between January and September 2015, global growth in car sales amounted to +1.7 percent. Over the last 3 quarter, compared to the same period last year, the market grew by +4.5 percent ( July: +0.4 percent, August: +0.3 percent and September: +3.8 percent).
However, according to the portal focus2move, this year the most noticeable difference between sales of premium and non-premium premium cars. For example, conventional car brands that mainly produce non-premium vehicles are losing sales in 2015 while premium brands are gaining momentum.
TOP 100 most successful car brands
Everyone is already so accustomed to the fact that Toyota is the leader in the number of world sales of new cars that statements that Japanese stamp ranked first in the world in sales, no longer attracts anyone. However, for those who are interested, we will provide the data.
Thus, according to world sales statistics for 9 months of 2015 (data provided by focus2move), Toyota sold 6.25 million ( 6,253,131 pcs.). For example, in September it sold 703,167 cars, which is 1 percent more than in 2014.
The second place in the world ranking is occupied by the company, which demonstrates the fourth consecutive month of strong sales growth. So, according to the results of the first 9 months, Ford sold 4.52 million cars worldwide ( 4,528,378 pcs.). In September, sales growth compared to the same period amounted to +8.7 percent (sold 543,343 units).
The third line is occupied by the German brand. Between January and September 2015, the company sold more cars (4,786,738 pcs.) than the Ford brand (see above), but, nevertheless, VW failed to gain a foothold in the second line of the focus2move rating, as Volkswagen sold fewer cars(540,306 units) than Ford (see above). VW's failure is of course linked to the diesel scandal. As a result of an unprecedented incident in only one September 2015 Volkswagen sales collapsed by -2.7 percent.
Separately, we would like to note Korean brand, which is slowly but surely approaching in recent years. In the first 9 months of 2015, the Korean brand sold 3,522,796 vehicles, which helped the company to gain a foothold in the 4th line of the rating. This was also facilitated by the successes of recent months. For example, only in one September of the current Hyundai sold 417,191 vehicles, which is +1.8 percent compared to last year (in relation to September 2014).
Follow the Korean car brand there are such companies as (for 9 months sold 3,255,614 pcs) and Chevrolet, which are ranked fifth and sixth respectively. Honda managed to take this place thanks to the bad luck of the companies (-6.5 percent) and the drop in sales (-9.4 percent). True, according to experts, Honda also managed to take the fifth line in the world ranking due to the success of its own sales, which only in September 2015 increased by +12.2 percent (401,960 cars were sold).
It is noteworthy that subsidiary seriously lags behind its relative Hyundai. According to the results of the nine-month period in 2015, Kia occupies only the 8th line in the world ranking (from January to September 2015, Kia sold 2,142,336 vehicles). In September, the brand sold 250,005 vehicles worldwide (up +2.4 percent).
It is worth noting that Kia's success allowed this brand to bypass the legendary company in the sales rating, which for 9 months of this year occupies only the ninth line in sales (sold 1,520,086 pcs.). But Mercedes cannot be discounted, as it was this company that became the best of the TOP-20 global brands that recorded an increase in sales of new cars in September 2015. Thus, according to statistics, Mercedes sold 197,313 vehicles in September alone (an increase of +14.4 percent). Considering that this premium brand, the success of Mercedes is amazing.

The situation on the car market was influenced by the revival of trade in Western Europe, record speed sales in North American markets (USA, Canada, Mexico) and increased turnover in China. The car market is growing, albeit at a slower pace than compared to 2014. In January-September of this year, deals were made for 65.7 million units, and only starting from mid-summer, an increase in the number of sales began to be observed: in July they increased by 0.4%, in August by 0.3% and in September by 3.8%.
The gap between sales in the "regular" and premium sectors has deepened even more - the former is rather decreasing, while the latter is growing rapidly, especially in terms of the number of sales Mercedes cars and BMW. Over the past year Mercedes sales increased by 14% of total sales, and BMW - by 8.9%.

The leadership of Toyota, Volkswagen and Ford in the ranking of car quality and reliability is not surprising. High-quality assembly, low maintenance costs, a large number of dealer centers and the absence of problems with spare parts make cars of these brands excellent choice as for experienced car owners and for people buying their first car. However, the rating is constantly updated, so in 2016 year Toyota may well yield leadership to American, German, and possibly Korean competitors.
The choice of car depends on many factors. But only car sales statistics in the world can accurately tell you the model and brand that most drivers of the planet choose.
After all, salon managers often call the best cars sold on this moment their institution. Having unbiased statistical information, you can easily determine the favorites of the transport market for each year and will be able to take this information into account when autoshopping.
Hello everyone, Ilya Kulik is with you, and today I am opening a series of publications on car sales statistics - a useful and interesting topic.
Auto sales statistics are a valuable information resource that can be used not only by marketers and the like. narrow specialists but also by ordinary motorists.
After all, it is known that in the first half of the year of operation, new cars arrive at secondary market more often than in the next 3-5 years - this is basically the percentage of drivers who made the wrong choice.
If the buyer pays attention to global sales trends, then:
- When purchasing his car, he will have greater certainty in choosing a model and brand;
- The risk of disappointment in the purchase will be significantly less.
Most drivers are interested in the best-selling car of the year - usually such a car is the perfect combination prices and quality. Some are interested in cars of some separate national auto industry:
- Russian Federation;
- U.S.A;
- European Union;
- Southeast Asian countries.
Well, let's see what motor vehicles(TC) are noteworthy globally in terms of their sales performance.
Who supplies cars to the world car markets?

- More than 70 million of the total volume are passenger cars.
And the lion's share of this huge amount falls on several leading countries in the auto industry. The five absolute favorites of sales today look like this:

According to the international statistical company "IHS", today, on a global scale, the sale of vehicles continues to slowly decline.

- In 2016(compared to 2015) – by 4.6%.
The world auto trading favorites have different market trends:
- World's top seller - China, which is steadily moving towards 1/3 of the global share of car sales: in 2015 it was 25%, and in 2016 - already 27%! However, most Chinese market machines provides domestic consumption;
- Sales volumes in the United States traditionally stable and fluctuate from year to year by a small amount in both directions;
- Japan over the past 2 years has shown a serious decline, exceeding 10%;
- Germany has satisfactory growth;
- India in terms of sales growth, China is surely catching up.
Surprisingly, as you can see in the table below, Italy showed the largest increase in sales, although it ranks last in terms of sales.

What car models are leading in global car sales?
In addition, I will give statistics on the implementation of machines by models. In the top three, the situation is similar to the previous one - Toyota, Volkswagen and Ford are in the lead.
- ToyotaCorolla– the undisputed sales leader not only for 2 recent years, but over a much longer period.
- VolkswagenGolf– occupies a solid and also long-standing second place, leading in sales in Europe.
- FordF-Series- Without this pickup, the existence of the average American is vague, especially living outside the urban environment.
It is significant that the top ten best-selling cars are dominated by models from Japan, Germany and the United States, with the exception of Korean Hyundai Elantra.
Further, starting with Wuling Hongguang, budget “Chinese” appear. In general, if we analyze the 50 most demanded models on the market in the table, it becomes clear that only 5 countries own the world demand for vehicles. This:
- Japan;
- Germany;
- China;
- South Korea.
That's the whole transcontinental auto industry - the rest of the countries are either focused on filling domestic low-competitive markets or their share in trade is hardly noticeable.
For example, Russia has a developed auto industry, but the share of export sales from it is low - the main shaft of production is focused on. This is observed not only in the Russian Federation, but also in many European countries.

Of the TOP-20 best-selling car models, the greatest commercial success is observed for brands:
- Volkswagen– 10 models in the TOP for 2 years;
- Toyota– 8 models in the TOP for 2 years;
- Ford– 5 models in the TOP for 2 years.
Attention! The above statistics apply not only to passenger cars, but also to light commercial vehicles (the so-called LCVs).
How are cars sold around the world?
Now I will give statistics on the most purchased models for the main consumer countries of auto products. The most significant car markets for new cars in global statistics are represented by 15 states of the planet - not a lot, of course.
In the past 2016, more than half of these markets were among the leaders in sales of products of the national auto industry.
The situation looks like this:
- PRC owns the most consumer market in the world and popular model year in China was "Volkswagen Lavida";
- IN THE USA And Canada most actively bought pickup "Ford F-series";
- In Mexico"Nissan Versa" is in the lead;
- In Brazil"Chevrolet Onix";
- Japanese prefer the Toyota Prius hybrid;
- South Koreans also appreciate their Hyundai Avanta model;
- Germans do not change the iconic "Volkswagen Golf";
- In France faithful to the domestic "Renault Clio";
- English prefer imported "Ford Fiesta";
- in Italy buy their Fiat Panda;
- Spaniards also like the native "Seat Leon";
- In Australia appreciate the Toyota Hilux, a relative of the Ford F-series;
- Indians spending money on their Maruti Alto;
- In Russia also previously led domestic AvtoVAZ, but in 2016 the Russian-assembled Hyundai Solaris pulled ahead.
From these statistics it can be seen that both model and brand spread across countries is almost one hundred percent. And if not for the American-Canadian unanimity, then one could say that the inhabitants of each country like a particular model of car, and in most cases, local production.
If we take the European car market as an aggregate, then in 2016 the situation for the favorite models is as follows:
- « Volkswagen Golf» – sold 49 million;
- « Renault Clio» – sold 30 million;
- « Volkswagen Polo- 30 million units sold
Moreover, Volkswagen Golf and Renault Clio have been in the TOP-5 of the best-selling cars in Europe for more than a decade - this is a serious trend worthy of taking into account the example of Europeans.
What are the best selling cars in history?
In conclusion, it will be interesting for you to learn about the absolute leaders in sales for the entire existence of the car as such, and not just for the last two years. In the English-speaking Internet there is an interesting list of 127 car models ever produced with sales data. Based on it, a rating of the TOP-5 most commercially successful machines in history.
I present it to you:
- « ToyotaCorolla – japanese model, which has replaced more than ten generations, has been produced since 1966 (Toyota Corporation) and today the total sales of these cars has reached 45 million units. Back in 1974, Corolla got into the Guinness Book as the best-selling car, and this model is still not inferior to this championship;
- « FordF-Series"- since 1948, the concern "Ford Motor C." produced 13 generations of this american pickup truck, which in total gave a volume of 34 million units sold. It is a firm favorite of the Ford brand and is the best-selling car in the US;
- Volkswagen Golf- the most successful model German concern Volkswagen AG. Since 1974, 7 generations of this car have been replaced, which in total amounted to about 30 million sales;
- Fiat 124/125– development Italian company"FIAT S.p.A" (1966). These cars (with minor modifications) were produced in many countries including India, Turkey, South Korea, Argentina, Poland, Bulgaria, Spain and even Morocco. This family also includes VAZ models (from 2101 to 2107), produced in the USSR. The total sales of such machines exceeded 23 million units;
- "Volkswagen Beetle"- this is truly a legendary model, to the development of which F. Porsche himself had a hand. Moreover, history says that he did this at the direct request of A. Hitler, who demanded cheap and reliable transport from the industrialists for the needs of the nation. The requirement was fulfilled. Moreover, it is so fortunate that the Zhuk, before being discontinued in 2003, did not undergo significant design changes. In total, since 1938, more than 21 million units of "Zaporozhets of the West" have been sold worldwide.
- When choosing a car and taking into account the statistics, do not give it paramount importance. In Russia, the driving conditions and the nature of the operation of the car and, of course, the price are more important. Statistics should be used as a useful auxiliary tool for autoshopping.
- You can ask the dealership manager show you sales statistics. If he agrees, then you will see which cars are most in demand in your region.
- If the manager himself starts giving you impressive statistics, then do not believe everything unconditionally - it is quite possible that this is a marketing trick.
