Today, the South Korean automaker Kia Motor Corporation is the second automaker in its country and the seventh in the world. In 2016, the company sold over 3 million vehicles. More than 5 thousand car dealerships in more than 190 countries are engaged in their implementation. The corporation employs 40,000 people.

The path from bicycles to the auto giant

The company was founded on May 15, 1944 under the name KyungSung Precision Industry. The company was engaged in the manual assembly of bicycles.

For a country that remained one of the poorest Asian countries until the 1960s, own production Bicycles were the pinnacle of industrial technology. This type of transport for a long time was the most massive. Since 1961, the company, which by that time had received the name KIA Industries, began the production of motorcycles and mopeds by order of the government.

The history of the company as a car manufacturer still begins with the advent of the first passenger car - Brisa, which came out in 1974 from the assembly line of a newly built plant. The release of the KIA car became possible thanks to cooperation with Mazda, with which they had previously concluded an appropriate agreement. Brisa absorbed, like many subsequent KIA developments, the main design solutions of the Japanese company.

In the seventies, the company continued to develop: subsidiaries were created, Asia Motors, a manufacturer of trucks and all-terrain vehicles for the army, was acquired. In 1978, a diesel engine was designed by the company for installation on these machines. The company begins to produce under license models of the Peugeot and Fiat corporations.

In the 80s, small blocks of shares (up to 10%) of the company were bought first by Mazda, then by Ford. The alliance with powerful brands stimulates the creation of research centers in the structure of the automaker, the implementation of targeted design work. The result was the development in 1987 of the Pride small passenger car, which subsequently served many generations of motorists in various parts of the world for a long time and faithfully.

South Korea struggled to get out of the crisis quagmire, however, KIA Motors was pulled out of a difficult financial situation by its Korean competitor Hyundai, and not the American Ford, which did not claim to purchase. As a result of the transaction, the industrial association Hyundai-KIA Automotive Group was formed.

The history of the brand did not end there, but continued its development with new success. Already in 1999 appears family minivan Carnival, and a year later production began Cerato sedan, which has become for a long time the face of the company in the popular "golf class".

Mission

The company follows the motto: - "The Power to Surprise" ("The Art of Surprise"). At the heart of its strategy is the search for new technological solutions that can surprise fans of the concern; impeccable quality, reasonable pricing policy.

The South Korean company Kia has always been famous for its quality and cheap cars. Recently, thanks to the emergence of new, more advanced models, Kia products are one of the most sought after in the global automotive market.

Of course, the bright representative of this "golden series" is Kia Rio. Experienced car enthusiasts know that this model considered one of the most practical and stylish cars developed using the latest technology.

However, despite the general assembly concept, the models assembled at different factories differ quite noticeably from each other. Therefore, for a more objective assessment of the Kia Rio, it is important to know at which plant it is produced.

In today's article, we will talk about the most powerful factories of the Korean company Kia, which assemble the Rio model.

The most powerful plants of the Kia concern

Photo: Kia assembly In Korea

For quite a long time, the Korean company Kia has set itself a grandiose goal - to conquer the automotive markets of Europe, Asia and America. It should be noted that the concern is confidently moving towards the fulfillment of the task.

It is worth noting the seven main factories of Kia, which are located around the world.

It is important to remember that depending on the plant where Rio is made, the price of a car can be significantly lower than a model assembled at the main plant in Korea. This is due to the high costs of transportation to remote areas.

The most powerful branches of the Korean company are:

  • a South Korean plant in the city of Kwangmen, which is considered the main and most powerful plant of the concern;
  • a Chinese factory in Yancheng, which produces Rio mainly for the local market. If we recall the population of China, we can conclude that this market is very promising in terms of sales;
  • the Ecuadorian Kia plant, which is responsible for supplying the Rio model to the markets of South America;
  • an Indonesian plant that assembles the Kia Rio for the Southeast Asian market;
  • relatively new plant, which is located on the territory of the capital of the Philippines. Delivers cars to local market, and to the market of neighboring countries;
  • plant, which is located in the Russian city of St. Petersburg. It is considered the second largest after Korean. Delivers Kia Rio on domestic market, the market of Eastern Europe and the CIS countries;
  • Kaliningrad plant Kia, which produces Rio cars for the Baltic countries and Central Europe. And, of course, for the Russian market.

It should be noted that almost no cars assembled in Korea are delivered to Russia. Domestic motorists are content with models assembled at our factories.

The Kia Rio comes directly from Korea to the US and Central European markets.

Kia Rio in the Russian market

As mentioned above, the Kia Rio car Korean production, it is very difficult to purchase on the territory of Russia, and almost impossible. All cars of this model that can be found on domestic roads, assembled at the St. Petersburg or Kaliningrad plants.

Many may skeptically wave their hands and say: “Cars assembled on domestic factories, by default, cannot be of high quality. However, it is important to know that only final assembly is carried out at Russian factories, and all parts and components are supplied from other countries.

Russian Kia factories cooperate with:

  • the head plant of Kia, which supplies transmissions, power units (engine, clutch, gearbox) and shock absorbers to the St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad plants;
  • the Hyundai plant, which supplies galvanized steel to Kia's domestic facilities;
  • Hyundai Mobis - central panels and bumpers;
  • various Korean ancillary companies supply air conditioners, heating systems, and exhaust systems.

In addition, it is important to note that Russian factories use Korean technology and strictly adhere to the basic assembly concept. Quality control is carried out exclusively by independent Korean specialists, who are considered in the automotive world.

Conclusion

One of the most famous Korean cars has already conquered the markets of many countries. Due to its growing popularity, the owners of the Korean company Kia decided to build several large branches in different parts of the world, so that each would be responsible for delivering cars to their assigned markets.

In Russia, you can buy Kia Rio exclusively of domestic assembly. More precisely, the St. Petersburg or Kaliningrad production.

It is worth noting that the final stage of assembly is taking place at our factories, and all the main components are supplied from Korean facilities.

When buying a car, one of the key criteria is the place of its assembly. Many parameters depend on this - the level of adaptation to local roads, the quality and even the technical characteristics of the vehicle.

With increasing demand, large manufacturers are opening factories in many countries around the world.

The South Korean company KIA, which has a wide geography of factories, is no exception.

Where are these cars manufactured? Where do cars come from Russian market?

General information about KIA

Kia Motors Corporation is a South Korean brand that ranks 2nd in size in South Korea and is among the top ten largest companies peace.

The year of foundation is considered to be 1944, when the new enterprise became part of the Kia Group. The full spin-off into an individual unit took place in 2003.

At first, the company was called KyungSung Precision Industry, and only since 1951 it was renamed KIA Industries.

The initial line of work of the newly created structure is the manufacture of two-wheeled vehicles (motorcycles and bicycles).

Only since the 70s of the last century, the production of cars and trucks started. In less than 20 years of activity, the millionth car rolled off the assembly line.

In 1998, the company was affected by the financial crisis associated with a decrease in consumer ability and a drop in sales.

During the same period, Kia lost its independence and was acquired by another manufacturer, Hyundai. A year after the merger, Hyundai Kia Automotive Group was formed.

The turning point was 2006, when Peter Schreyer, a German designer involved in the development of many models from manufacturers such as Volkswagen and Audi, got a job at Kia Motors.

In just four years (from 2008 to 2011), Kia's vehicle sales jumped 81 percent, with total sales of 2.5 million vehicles a year.

Today, KIA continues to gain momentum, offering the world more and more new models.

With the rise in popularity KIA cars company representatives were forced to expand production. So, since 2005, Spectra models have been produced in Russia at the IzhAvto plant, since 2006 - Rio, and after some time - Sorento.

Already by 2010, the production process of cars at this plant was stopped, but a few months later the plant resumed work for a couple of months to produce a small batch of Sorento and Spectra in order to cover IzhAvto's current obligations to the South Korean brand.

Another assembly site is Avtotor (Kaliningrad), where following models KIA - Sid, Sportage, Soul, Sorento, Cerate, Venga and others.

Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad.

The mentioned companies were engaged only in production, and KIA Motors performed distribution tasks.

Thanks to the well-established production, for several years, starting from 2010, the KIA brand has been the leader in sales in the Russian Federation among foreign cars.

Since 2011, the production of Kia Rio cars, optimized for local operating conditions, has started in St. Petersburg.

The machine was based on the platforms of two famous cars from Hyundai (i20 and Solaris).

Already the first years showed the success of KIA Rio in the Russian market. In 2014, sales of this model exceeded 10,000 units every year.

In which countries and where is Kia Sportage 2016 assembled, factories in Russia

The Kia Sportage car, due to its characteristics, is in great demand in Russia. One of the factors is the presence of a plant on the territory of the Russian Federation, which produces cars adapted to more stringent operating conditions.

Initially, KIA Sportage was assembled at German factories, after which a large share of production "migrated" to South Korea, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Slovakia and Russia.

Indonesian-made cars do not reach the Russian market, but domestic motorists have a chance to buy a Sportage recent years release, produced in Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Russia and Korea.

To find out in which country the car was assembled, just look at (located on the windshield).

The first letters can be:

  • KNE - South Korean production;
  • XWE - car made in Russia;
  • U5Y - Slovak assembly.

Production in Slovakia began in 2000. The plant in Zilina covers an area of 223 hectares, and the number of employees exceeds 3,000 people. The total output is 300 thousand cars annually.

Kia Sportage is also produced in Russia, at a plant in Kaliningrad.

When buying a car, you should know that the main assembly process of the KIA Sportage takes place in Slovakia, after which the car is disassembled into car kits and sent to the Russian Federation for SKD assembly.

For comparison, when assembling a car in Slovakia, 2000 operations are performed, and the Russian Federation - 20.

But such limited participation is not in vain, and buyers have serious complaints about the build quality.

Most often, complaints relate to the adjustment of doors that do not open and close well. By the way, cars Korean assembly no such defects.

Another problem of domestic KIA variant Sportage - incomplete charging of the air conditioner and excessive bending of one of the tubes in the refrigerant circuit.

For this reason, additional noise may appear during the operation of the air conditioner, which is eliminated under warranty.

In which countries and where is the Sorento assembled, factories in Russia

The car is assembled in many countries - in Turkey, South Korea, Slovakia and Russia.

By the way, KIA Sorento has been produced in the Russian Federation since 2013, and the main place of manufacture is the Avtotor plant (Kaliningrad).

Rumor has it that AvtoVAZ will eventually produce the model, but so far these are just dreams.

The main production is located in South Korea, but these cars reach Russia in limited quantities (via Vladivostok). In most regions, cars from the Avtotor plant predominate.

There is a lot of discussion about quality Russian assembly KIA Sorento. When compared with models from Turkey, Russian version nothing worse.

This is easy to explain, because machines are produced at the same facilities. BMW brands whose quality is strictly controlled.

The Russian assembly of KIA Sorento is characterized by a number of other features:

  • All spare parts in the production process are supplied from Korea;
  • Body rolling in the manufacturing process is under strict control;
  • Employees for serious misconduct may lose their jobs. In addition, employees regularly attend refresher courses;
  • The conveyor is fully automatic. At the same time, the quality of each part is necessarily checked.

In which countries and where is Sid assembled, factories in Russia

Auto KIA Ceed\'s is positioned as a car for Europe. At the same time, the model replaced the already outdated cerate.

Kia Sid cars are produced in many countries. The main supplier for Europe is a plant in Slovakia (the city of Zilina).

KIA Ceed\'s enters the CIS market from Kazakhstan (the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk). The needs of the inhabitants of the Russian Federation are covered by the Kaliningrad Avtotor plant.

It should be noted that initially KIA model Sid has been targeting the European market. That is why the main focus is on large plant located in Slovakia.

The process of preparation for production and the release itself took place in several stages:

  • In May 2006, the Slovak plant began work;
  • In December 2007, the production line officially opened. In addition to the machines themselves, transmissions and motors are produced;
  • In October 2008, the 100,000th KIA Ceed\'s car was produced.

After some time in Kaliningrad (at the Avtotor plant) it was possible to establish a SKD assembly.

A feature of this plant is a great experience in the production and assembly of many other brands of cars - BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Opel and others. The shop where KIA Ceed's is made today used to make Chevrolets.

Special attention when choosing a machine is given to the build quality. As for the KIA Sid cars made in the Russian Federation, there are no serious complaints here. Each car after production undergoes additional checks and tests.

At the same time, the company's administration personally monitors quality control and is directly responsible to the leaders of the concern.

Since the beginning of the assembly of KIA Ceed \'s at the plant in Kaliningrad, one of the employees was a representative of the Slovak plant.

At the same time, it is no secret that the cars “originally” from Slovakia are of the highest quality, because they are produced for the most part for the Russian market.

Since 2010, Avtotor has launched the production of a new line of cars. Externally, the model has not changed much, but some changes still occurred.

The new KIA Ceed\'s has a system exchange rate stability, cruise control and dual zone air conditioning. In addition, the number of airbags has grown to ten.

As mentioned above, large-scale assembly is underway in Kaliningrad (including for Kia Sid). The main work is carried out in Slovakia, from where practically finished cars come to the Russian Federation.

On Kaliningrad plant the engine, seats, wheels and the rear of the cabin are installed.

The main task for manufacturers is to reduce taxation costs, production costs and the final price for consumers in this way.

In which countries and where is Rio assembled, factories in Russia

The issue of machine assembly and its quality deserves special attention. So, KIA Rio has been on sale since 2000, including in Russia.

Initially, the assembly took place in South Korea (which is where the cars came from to the domestic market). KIA Rio of the Russian assembly appeared only in 2005.

The IzhAvto plant, which worked for only five years, took up the creation of the model. When production was restarted in 2011 (for the “additional release” of some models), KIA Rio was no longer assembled.

There are also facilities for the production of KIA cars in Kaliningrad, but due to the lack necessary equipment for the production of the model, the release process of Rio at Avtotor was short-lived.

Since 2011, KIA Rio has been assembled at a new plant in St. Petersburg. At the same time, the Russian version of the car was significantly different from those versions that were sold in Europe.

The only similarity is the appearance, but otherwise the car was redesigned for use on Russian roads.

In addition to Russia, Kia Rio is produced in many parts of the world. The main capacities are concentrated in South Korea, where there are five factories. In addition, the machines were produced in the following countries - Ukraine, Turkey, India, China, Indonesia and others.

In the Russian Federation and China there is only one Rio assembly shop. In the USA, the model has been produced since 2009, and in Slovakia since 2006.

As for the quality of the Russian assembly, here the main complaints relate to the quality of the screw pull and the uneven gaps.

In addition, for the Russian Kia version Rio is characterized by the presence of heat shrink or electrical tape in certain areas of the wiring.

Sometimes complaints are received plastic panels(there is a marriage) and excessive creaking of the seat backs. In addition, domestically assembled KIA Rio has problems with sound insulation.

Many car owners have to do.

In which countries and where is Optima assembled, factories in Russia

Another noteworthy model is Kia Magentis, known in Russia as Optima.

The production of this KIA model started in 2000. The first generation cars were sold under the name Optima, but in 2002 the Canadian and European market received a car with a new name - KIA Magentis.

In the South Korean market, second-generation cars had other “names” - K5 and Lotze.

The third generation of cars has been produced since 2010, and it was from this period that KIA Optima received worldwide recognition.

Since 2010, Kia Spectra has been assembled in Izhevsk, the quality of which was very decent. So, after some time, the release of another model was launched -.

There is an opinion that these cars are produced only in South Korea. But this is a misconception. This state of affairs took place until 2014. Now the car is assembled not only in the Russian Federation, but also in the USA.

There are no European factories that would produce KIA Optima, because South Korean capacities are enough to cover current requests.

IN Russian KIA Optima is produced at Avtotor (Kaliningrad). The plant has a well-established production and a wide staff of experienced employees.

As with other models, the emphasis is on SKD. At the same time, complete units come from the territory of South Korea.

The key point for many car owners is build quality. Here it is worth highlighting the following points:

  • In Russia, the car is assembled from large units that are debugged and tested;
  • The quality of ready-made transport is closely monitored, which nullifies the appearance of marriage on the market;
  • In the USA (Georgia) KIA Optima is produced for domestic consumption. In this case, the assembly scheme is the same as in the Russian Federation. If we compare the final result, there is almost no difference. The only thing that differs is the packaging.

In which countries and where is Cerato assembled, factories in Russia

The KIA Cerato model is a worthy representative of the South Korean brand. The car belongs to the category of the middle class, was first introduced in 2004.

Cerato 2nd generation appeared four years later, in 2008. The third generation - in 2009. Since the appearance of the new model, the geography of production has gradually expanded.

The car was produced in India, Iran, Ecuador, USA, Russia, Ukraine and a number of other countries.

As for the KIA Cerato, the first and second generation of cars were produced in South Korea, and since 2006 - in the USA. Since 2009, when the 3rd generation cerate appeared.

At the same time, the manufacture was entrusted to a number of other countries (including Russia).

The Asia Auto plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan) joined the work, where SCD assembly was carried out.

The bottom line was that the factory received ready-made components that were assembled within a few hours by the factory workers.

In Russia, the production of KIA Cerato is carried out by the Avtotor plant located in Kaliningrad. Previously, only large-scale assembly took place, but since 2014 a full cycle has been established.

In which countries and where is Soul collected, factories in Russia

Model KIA Soul- a compact mini-SUV, the first sales of which in the South Korean market began in 2008. It was then that the car was presented at the Paris Motor Show.

Interestingly, the car does not fit into any particular class, but most often the Soul refers specifically to the mini-SUV.

The main feature of the model is high level comfort for passengers and a huge trunk, which becomes even larger when the seats are folded down.

In Europe, KIA Suoul has appeared only since February 2009, and in the USA - since April.

For the Russian consumer, KIA Soul is assembled at three plants:

  • In Kaliningrad - "Avtotor";
  • In Kazakhstan - "Asia Auto";
  • In South Korea.

There is information that the KIA Soul is also being assembled in China, with which Russia has long established a close partnership. Cars from China are exported to many parts of the world, including Russia.

Are there any build differences? In Kaliningrad, there is a "screwdriver" production, when factory workers assemble ready-made units. Therefore, the quality finished machines does not depend much on the place of production.

In addition, ready-made units also come to China and Kazakhstan, so finding differences in assembly is a difficult task. All that can differ is only the equipment.

Results

As can be seen from the article, KIA cars have a very wide geography of production.

The Russian market gets mainly cars from St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Kazakhstan, South Korea and China. Much depends on the model and current demand.
