Comparison of pajero 4 and sports. New Mitsubishi Pajero Sport – do I want to be Prado? Unique technical solutions helped to improve speed and driving characteristics

22.09.2019

The release of Pajero Sport, like the rival, began back in 1996 and, to this day, both models are produced, enjoying considerable popularity among motorists around the world. The first generation of vehicles really had a lot in common, but, of course, the large size of the Pajero immediately catches the eye. After numerous restylings, the body of the sports version became larger and received an unusual grille, while the second car became more powerful and presentable over the years, as the manufacturer began to increase the target audience who might like the car. Many motorists to this day confuse these models, despite the characteristic external differences. That is why in this article we will try to compare the technical characteristics, appearance and interior of the models.

Appearance of cars

Both cars are similar only in name. The sports version is medium in size, while it belongs to the class of full-size SUVs. The first model has a pronounced sporty character, but the "big brother" is more practical, as it is suitable for country racing on deserted tracks, and for regular trips around the city.

In addition, differences can be found in the form of headlights, ground clearance, as well as the outlines of the body.

SUV interior

Both models, as well as all Mitsubishi SUVs, have a spacious interior. However, in the sports vehicle, the manufacturer placed less emphasis on passenger comfort and convenience, using cheaper upholstery materials, and opted for a mid-range audio system. In addition, the weak side of the model is a small luggage compartment. Pajero has always had a luxurious interior: leather upholstery, well-thought-out ergonomics of the driver's seat, the use of advanced climate control and navigation systems, etc.

Specifications

The compared cars are powerful SUVs that are able to get out of any snow blockage or mud pit. However, as practice shows, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has better maneuverability and stability on the roads. Of course, this is not surprising, because the manufacturer used the achievements of engineers over the years to release a model that can impress car enthusiasts. But, alas, the vehicle has an impressive fuel consumption - from 13 to 16 liters (depending on the generation, while the 4th generation of the Mitsubishi Pajero was modernized, so the car's "appetites" decreased to 12.5-13 liters. In urban According to the reviews of the owners of the models, we can conclude that both cars have good handling, but the sports version is still in the lead.

Drawing conclusions

In this article, we compared Pajero and Pajero sport, identified common features and cardinal differences. We can say that each of the models has its own strengths, so it is pointless to judge which car is better and which is worse. If you choose between these vehicles, we recommend that you first determine for what purpose the car will be used. Mitsubishi Pajero is the best option for those people who are in search of a presentable urban SUV, and its counterpart is suitable for long trips and off-road travel.

The automotive market today brings its own rules and requires continuous development of automotive companies in order not to lose their fans. This also applies to the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport SUV. The company does not back down, and recently released a new 3rd generation, the release of which many have been waiting for. The entire range of Mitsubishi.

Car history

Pajero Sport received its position in the Mitsubishi model list between Pajero and Pajero Pinin. The name "Sport" indicates that the car was designed using the significant experience that the company has accumulated in rally competitions.

The model was oriented to a greater extent for people leading an active lifestyle. This 5-door SUV with an all-wheel drive system is perfectly suited for off-road and stands out for its excellent cross-country ability. Appearance eloquently testifies to the sporting nature of the Japanese. The front end has dynamic characteristics: an aggressive bumper, a radiator grille and front fog lamps.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

All this makes it clear that the model is really prestigious. On the body, slight curves of lines are noticeable, which emphasize the flat surface of the Pajero Sport and allow you to create a sense of harmony between the SUV and nature. Just like a real classic jeep should be.

Looking at the car, there is confidence: there is a high ground clearance, a masculine appearance and a simple, but pleasant body. The article describes the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport price, provides photos and descriptions of the features of all 3 families of famous jeeps.

1st generation (1996-2010)

The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 1 SUV of the family was shown not so long ago - in 1997, as a public alternative to the Pajero model. The car was also called Challenger, Montero Sport, Nativa and Shogun Sport. They decided to create a vehicle on a reduced L200 platform.

The standard Easy Select gearbox has a rigid front axle connection. In the United States and Japan, models were sold with a Super Select box, where there was a permanent all-wheel drive system.

The SUV of the first family has undergone several improvements and restylings. After 2000, instead of the rear suspension on springs, they began to use a spring. Suspension is not really killed, which has always inspired respect. Confidence was given by the Easy Select all-wheel drive system.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport was delivered to Russia with two versions: with a 2.5-liter turbodiesel engine producing 85 horsepower and a V-shaped six-cylinder petrol unit with a volume of 3.0 liters.

In addition, the car had 3.5-liter petrol "sixes" under the hood, as well as turbodiesels with a volume of 2.8 / 3.2 liters. They were synchronized with a manual gearbox. The maximum speed was at the level of 150 km / h. After restyling, the jeep accelerated to 175 kilometers per hour.

Updated design in 2005

In addition to the 5-speed manual transmission, a 4-speed automatic was installed. Selling the Model 1 family to Japanese consumers ended with the onset of 2003. North America ended sales in 2004, and the Jeep was sold in other markets until 2008. A total of 630,000 vehicles were produced.

They decided to carry out the first restyling because of the rear suspension, which has its drawbacks, and the too ascetic exterior of the Pajero Sport.

The debut "Sport" almost did not get an attractive appearance and style. Beautiful appearance appeared years later, with the first restyling. At that time, buyers liked this rugged off-road machine, which did not give reason to doubt its abilities.

The first family of jeeps had a body that made it possible to create a fairly spacious interior of the car, while allocating the necessary space for the luggage compartment. The wheelbase was 2,725 millimeters, and the ride height was 215 mm.

It is clear that the Japanese vehicle was not light - 1,825 kilograms. On top of that, the top trims weighed 70kg more.

It is clear that inside the level of comfort on the first "Sport" is far from ideal. Salon did not surprise or impress. The interior is outdated, everything is extremely simple, but comfortable. Even then, the company's employees equipped the driver and passengers with sufficient care.

The interior equipment has 3-point seat belts with pretensioners even in the standard version, airbags, a nice acoustic installation with four or six speakers, air conditioning and the option of heating the front seats, as well as a block of additional devices that have found a place above the dashboard.

2nd generation (2008-2015)

The second version of the jeep appeared in 2008. If we compare the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2 with the previous generation, then the SUV has become larger, more comfortable and more expensive. The vehicle was not sold in the United States, Europe, or Japan.

The main plant for the production of an SUV was the Thai enterprise of the company, and jeeps were assembled in 4 countries: Brazil, Venezuela, India and Bangladesh. From 2013 to 2015, cars for Russian buyers were assembled in Kaluga, and GAZ was engaged in the frames.

It is noteworthy that the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, produced for Russia, already had a rear axle locking system as standard. But the system of exchange rate stability was installed only on top-end configurations. Models that went to European countries and Belarus decided to equip them with a stability control system even in the basic configuration.

The second family was created on the frame base of the Mitsubishi L200 pickup truck of the 4th division. The buyer received a permanent all-wheel drive system Super Select, where the transfer of torque to the front axle was turned off and the center and rear axle differentials were blocked.

The Russian car market had a 2.5-liter 4D56U turbodiesel as standard, developing 178 horsepower and working together with a manual or automatic transmission. In addition, a V-shaped six-cylinder three-liter gasoline engine was installed under the hood, which produced 220-222 “horses”.

Synchronized it with an automatic transmission. In 2011, they already stopped selling a version with a 3.2-liter diesel engine that develops 200 horsepower. It was paired with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.

Experts note the mechanical variation as more reliable. The clutch goes out more than 100,000 kilometers, provided that the vehicle is used correctly. All cars that were delivered to the Russian Federation had a 5-seater saloon and an all-wheel drive system, however, some markets offered a 7-seater saloon and a rear-wheel drive version.

Two gasoline engines of 2.4 4M41 and V6 3.5 6V31, with a capacity of 160 and 210 “horses”, respectively, as well as one turbocharged 2.5-liter diesel engine, designed for 136 horsepower, did not come to the Russian market. The 4M41 turbodiesel was called by many experts a fairly reliable power plant.

Instead of a timing belt, they installed a good old chain that quietly works out a 200,000th run. Reading the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport reviews, you understand that the jeep has served and continues to serve many drivers faithfully, so you should pay tribute to the Japanese specialists for the work done.

The disadvantages of the second family include difficulties with the turbine, which strongly "eats" oil and makes noise after 10,000 - 20,000 kilometers. But all these shortcomings were eliminated by the manufacturer under warranty. Defects include separation of the rubber element of the crankshaft pulley.

This is not significant if the defect is initially opened in the early stages, but on cars with high mileage, a large pulley play can be observed, which leads to problems with the engine. No matter how experts praised the diesel installation, the gasoline six-cylinder power unit looks more reliable.

Updated 2nd generation body

The weak points of such motors include intake manifold rattling at low and medium speeds. The gas distribution mechanism of the gas engine has been improved - a belt was installed instead of the chain.

Since the beginning of 2013, the model has been slightly corrected, in particular, its exterior, and in the next (2014) year, the car had an improved front panel inside and a new audio system. The production of the 2nd generation jeep ceased in 2016, and a total of about 400,000 copies were produced.

3rd generation (2015-present)

The most recent release for today is the 3rd Mitsubishi Pajero Sport family, introduced in mid-2015. The jeep is well marketed, and production is mostly done by Thailand.

Exterior

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2017 turned out to be a stylish, daring and more representative vehicle than earlier models. In part, this was achieved with the help of swept-back head optics, which is available for the first time on this Japanese in an LED layout and a proprietary X-shape, a more massive rear overhang and a belt line rising up closer to the aft area of the car.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2017 was blown in a wind tunnel, as a result of which it was possible to improve its own data by 15 percent. In general, looking at the front of the car, it can be confused with the Outlander, which also received the "X-face".

It must be admitted that a lot was said about this stylistic decision, there were even rumors that it was "inspiration" from the work of Steve Mattin. Although you can distinguish a car: the “lip” installed at the bottom is more massive, the fog lights of a different look, even the “grill” is different - everything seemed to turn out to be large and evil.

The novelty has “swinging” wheel arches, embossed sidewalls, a daring window sill line, as well as original lighting equipment. The appearance of the novelty received the character of the advanced concept Dynamic Shield. You understand that the designer salon did not stint on unique solutions.

To heighten the perception of the Jeep's exterior, the design team lavishly topped the bodywork with chrome overlays. But an experienced eye will notice that the vehicle has saved the frame structure. The height level is impressive, but access to the car is simplified by footrests, which are securely fixed. They are a little narrow, but do not interfere with patency.

The back, according to many, looks rather controversial. One gets the feeling that the designers invited the “guys” who had been creating Citroen since the beginning of the 2000s. Three-quarters of the aft area is occupied by "flowing" lights, very similar to the eccentric French C6 business sedan. It looks a little strange, but such a design attracts.

The lanterns placed on the stern, which flow down to the bumper, look very interesting in the evening, as they have LED streams. Bumpers have faceted ultrasonic radar eyes.

Two of them, mounted on the sides of the rear bumper, scan blind spots - a feature that appeared for the first time on a Mitsubishi car. The remaining 4 monitor obstacles during reverse maneuvers.

Interior

Previously, Pajero Sport owners of past generations and auto journalists received repeated complaints about the supposedly poor salon, which was even compared to the mournful hut of a ruined samurai. Applied to the salon such unpleasant adjectives as: hard, unfriendly, creaky and boring.

However, now the interior has turned out to be new, supplemented with useful innovations and improved in many ways. A conveniently located footboard helps to get into the jeep. Sitting behind the wheel of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2017, you feel like you are in a normal modern vehicle.

Many will love the colorful two-tone finish that creates a cozy feel. The seats began to be covered with high-quality leather and were able to interestingly collect it into folds. Everyone noticed that the quality of the plastic used and the level of fit of parts has improved significantly.

The steering wheel is now adjustable for reach. The Super Select transmission is adjusted using a washer, not a lever, as was the case in previous versions. At the same time, the mechanical drive was gone from the hand brake. Instead, a miniature lever blocks the pads.

Multifunction steering wheel

The seven-inch display does not have flawless graphics, and at maximum brightness, the driver cannot always see everything he needs. However, one should not immediately demand perfection from the novelty. Generally speaking, the interior design is strikingly different from the 2008 samples.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has steep curves in the center console and door handles. There's the charismatic lines of the multi-function steering wheel, the small transmission mode dial, and the nice grip of the latest 8-speed automatic.

Seven inch display

Top equipment contains a color screen that supports touch input. It refers to the Mitsubishi Connect system, which now works with voice control, a navigation system. It's nice that you can also synchronize your smartphone with a useful system.

Unusually, the color display slides out interestingly. Some at first thought that they would see a CD drive behind it, but SD card slots found their places there, which once again proves the modernity of the Japanese SUV.

The instrument panel is informative and has a white scale. A screen placed between the engine speed dial and the speed gauge displays information about the 4WD mode being used.

The list of functions has been increased - now the car comes with a surround view system, an electric parking brake, separate climate control, a heated steering wheel and a second row of seats. Rear passengers can get a 9-inch color DVD player display mounted in the roof panel.

The seats are well profiled, but the side support rollers on the front seats are widely spaced. Unfortunately, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2016 did not come out more spacious than its predecessor. There is still a little lack of space above the head, the back of the rear seats has only slightly become higher.

But do not forget that the "frame" body rigidity has a drawback - a high floor. But there is plenty of free space in the legs, and the backrest can be adjusted in terms of the angle of inclination. Three adults can easily sit down and feel comfortable. Moreover, due to the “flat” profile of the rear sofa during turns, three passengers will even feel better - thanks to the shoulders of the neighbors, no one will slide to the side.

In the case when a couple of people are sitting behind, then there is an option to fold the armrest and use it as a “stop”. Do not underestimate it, because during an active drive and off-road movement, it perfectly helps to keep. Pleased with improved noise isolation. All body panels are finished with absorbent materials, so you can carry on a conversation in an undertone.

It is possible to fold the armrest and use it as a "stop"

The luggage compartment of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2017 received a flat floor. If you look quickly, you get the feeling of a gigantic space. In fact, this is so - 700 liters with a tail, almost 2 baths will fit. Of course, the luggage compartment is not the same as in the Ford Edge, but it will be enough for travel.

If necessary, it is possible to remove the rear rows and increase the capacity of the trunk by two and a half times. If there is no desire to remove passenger seats, you can buy a trailer and forget about a small trunk.

By the way, the maximum permitted mass of a towed trailer for the third generation of a Japanese SUV is 3.1 tons. The company is proud of this, because direct competitors in the face of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (which does not pull more than two and a half tons) and (up to 2,000 kg) lose according to these indicators.

But the trailer can carry not only a couple of motorcycles or ATVs, but a real buggy, a boat. In addition, it is possible to travel by taking a motorhome with you.

Specifications

power unit

Two engines are coming to the Russian market. This is a 6-cylinder V-shaped "aspirated", having a volume of 3.0 liters and running on gasoline. Its output is an impressive 209 horsepower, capable of accelerating a two-ton jeep to the first hundred kilometers in 11.7 seconds.

The maximum speed in this case is 182 km / h. The power unit also consumes a lot - in city driving, the appetite will be about 14.5 liters for every 100 km of road. Having left the city, you can achieve a consumption of 8.9 liters per 100 kilometers. According to the company, mixed mode is 10.9 liters.

Diesel engine with a volume of 2.4 liters

In addition to it, a new diesel engine is provided. If earlier the unit had a volume of 2.5 liters, and developed 178 “horses”, now the unit has a volume of 2.4 liters and develops 181 horsepower.

The diesel has a turbine with variable geometry and a mechanism for changing the valve timing. Engine torque has increased by 30 Nm, and fuel economy has increased by 15% - the increase is felt. Unfortunately, there is no pre-heater for the engine and interior.

Transmission

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport received a Super Select II all-wheel drive system and an Aisin eight-speed automatic transmission. In 4H mode, the transmission begins to split the torque in a 60/40 ratio. Instead of the clutch, which itself is blocked in the central differential, they began to use the Torsen differential.

As before, the owner has the right to set the drive system modes: 2N (torque is transmitted only to the rear wheels), 4N (all-wheel drive system with a free differential), 4HLC (center differential is blocked) and 4LLc (blocking and lowering a number of speeds).

Interestingly, the reduction factor was increased from 1.4 to 2.5 in the direction of improving cross-country ability. Buyers will be pleasantly surprised that the Japanese company Mitsubishi has finally installed a system for selecting a driving mode (mud / snow, gravel or sand), as well as a hill descent assistance system.

All this made it possible to simplify and make driving comfortable, mainly for drivers who do not have off-road driving experience.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport R&D department pioneered an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Suspension

Serious work was carried out on the suspension settings. The usual suspension with double transverse levers remained ahead, and at the back there is a continuous axle with double trailing arms. It is important that the elastic parts were adjusted softer (which is very well felt), the frame was made reinforced.

The suspension is not too soft, which is very good, because many cars get "seasick" off-road. The Japanese managed to find a middle ground by adjusting the suspension in such a way that the driver and passengers did not sway to the point of nausea, but they did not feel like firewood in a cart either.

Steering

The steering mechanism has a rack and pinion type design and a hydraulic booster. It was worked out, so the car became more responsive to steering turns. Now the steering wheel has 3.8 turns from lock to lock.

Management has become simpler and more interesting. The steering device received a damper, so there are almost no shocks and vibrations transmitted to the steering wheel.

Brake system

On all wheels, as before, there are disc brakes with a ventilation system. The brake system works with various electronic assistants, such as ABS and EBD.

Safety

The ultrasonic sensor system mentioned above emits a buzzer sound and can interfere with the driver! The option is called UMS, and its job is to prevent a collision if the driver forgot to switch the selector from the “R” to “D” area. This happens very often.

In the bustle of the city, when the driver seeks to clear the way for other cars as quickly as possible, he can press the gas pedal, and the car, instead of starting to move forward, abruptly goes back. To avoid such problems, the system monitors all the interference that is within a radius of 1.5 meters, and if it finds them, it starts to emit its signal, thereby preventing the SUV from driving sharply back.

The new model has 7 airbags. Two of them were placed in front, opposite the driver and passenger - they help to provide protection against damage to the upper body. To protect the head of the driver and all passengers who sit near the windows, the engineers equipped the jeep with side airbags.

Several pillows were installed near the driver's seat to protect the knees and legs. To control stability, an electronic traction control system was provided. With it, an SUV can be driven quite easily, even if the car is on a slippery road. An active safety system is installed on the jeep in the form of an automatic braking function, monitoring dead zones and all-round cameras.

Summing up

From the very first generation to the present day, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport model differs very much. Of course, the unusual appearance of the Japanese SUV immediately catches the eye, but not only this has changed. The company's employees have increased the cross-country ability, build quality, the quality of the elements used, and ergonomics.

In other words, the first and third generations are heaven and earth. Literally everything has been redesigned and improved. It can be seen that the company's management strives not to lose its fans. On the contrary, it is looking for ways to win the respect and love of new motorists.

The question of whether the jeep turned out to be successful can be left for later, because there will always be connoisseurs and critics. As they say: "there are no comrades for the taste and color." But one thing can be seen for sure, the designers sought to highlight their "brainchild" from the flow of cars on the road.

It is worth noting that they managed to do this. Yes, perhaps the model is still far from ideal, but the company is taking the right and decisive steps in the right direction. But there are enough fans of this particular brand, moreover, they use cars of both the 3rd, and 2nd, and 1st generation.

If you look at the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport reviews, then to a greater extent the model is called reliable and passable, and they say about its suspension: “almost indestructible”. But such an assessment had to be earned. I would like to hope that the company will not stop on its development and will continue to produce and update its "real" all-wheel drive cars.

Video review

I am sad: there will be no new Mitsubishi Pajero - the current fourth generation will live another year and retire. But I am asked not to dramatize the situation: the new Pajero Sport has been announced as the flagship of the model line. A pensioner with a smartphone: a frame, a rear dependent suspension and a platoon of electronic assistants like an auto-brake system. Okay Google, should you buy the Pajero Sport?

P The reincarnation that Pajero Sport has experienced resembles Mickey Rourke's plastic surgery: instead of a charismatic face, which was so suited to brass knuckles of a power bumper, there is a big-lipped something with headlights on half of the front end. LED lighting, by the way, is excellent, especially good long-range. And what do the red streaks of lanterns symbolize - they say, wash yourself with bloody tears, competitors? So we have only two of them left: yes ...

Landing has become more comfortable, the finish is better, the steering wheel is heated in places of the correct grip. Plus additional sheets of vibration isolation

After my own third-generation Pajero, the new Sport is a bit cramped: the proximity of the front pillar and the passenger on the right presses, bruises can be bruised on the silver sides of the tunnel in the center. Actually, the landing has become noticeably more convenient - the chair is located higher, its pillow is longer - but where to put the little things you need on a trip? Instead of a full-fledged two-level box between the seats, there is a modest compartment with an uncomfortable shelf; there is no capacious basement under the center console. And try to open the lid of an empty glove compartment: you need not only to press the button, but also to pull the edge with your fingernail. It remains to dump everything in capacious pockets on the doors.

Instruments are simple and clear - what you need for an SUV

The cabin is surprisingly quiet. The 2.4-liter 4N15 turbodiesel, already familiar to me from the L200 pickup truck, will appear only next year, and the good old 4D56 engine will no longer be on the Russian market. While under the hood there is no alternative petrol "six" 3.0 with a capacity of 209 hp. This is less than before: the engineers returned the usual intake tract, getting rid of the system for changing its length.

Mitsubishi Connect pleases with the speed and decent sound of the audio system. There is no own navigation, but there are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto applications for deep integration with smartphones - you can display the Google Maps program on the screen

The voice of the "six" is beautiful, but there is enough traction, only while the interior is empty - in the expeditionary calculation, Pajero Sport is unhurried, but does not complain about appetite. The new Aisin "automatic" with its eight gears skillfully imitates the character of DSG preselections and already at 70 km / h rolls in the seventh gear almost at idle - despite this, even with road tires outside the city, the new Sport consumes more than 12 l / 100 km: the power reserve on a 70-liter tank does not exceed 560 km. And the drivetrain's love of top gears goes sideways when you need to accelerate with the flow. You have to press the gas pedal deeper, the box catches too hard - and the acceleration is too intense.

To help huge mirrors and thin racks - four all-round cameras. They can be turned on forcibly with a button on the steering wheel, the system works up to 10 km / h. Picture quality in daylight is decent

This is treated only by switching to manual mode - but then, before a complete stop, the first gear is engaged with a noticeable unfriendly poke. Bring back the old five-speed "automatic"! Yes, he was slow, but logical. But do not touch the transmission cooling radiator that has appeared: now the box does not overheat and does not go into emergency mode, even if you climb uphill for a long time.

There is enough space in the back, there is heating, but the pillow is rather low - you have to sit with your knees up. Backrest angle adjustable

Changes in the chassis - like a medal with two sides. Facial - manageability: day and night with its predecessor! It lurched a lot and used to fall: look how many “shifters” are on sale in the secondary market. But now the steering wheel has become much “shorter” (3.7 turns between the extreme positions instead of the previous 4.5), it has adequate effort. Plus new springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. Super Select II all-wheel drive transmission - with Torsen self-locking center differential, while before the viscous coupling was responsible for blocking.

Despite a fair amount of roll, the wheels do not come off the road. Even with a full load - no hint of tipping

All is not in vain! I have a good feel for what's going on with the steered wheels, and body roll in corners barely raises blood pressure. And the stabilization system is set up brilliantly. Remembering how, I decided to repeat the spectacular shot. I loaded the Pajero Sport to full weight, sat on the right, and freed up the driving seat for our expert Yaroslav Tsyplenkov. But - no chance of capsizing! The electronics slowed down gently and effectively, and the Sport just floated out of the corner instead of tearing the inside, unloaded wheels off the pavement.

The trunk is huge and there are hooks for the net on the floor. In the usual position, things are hidden by a roller blind. The transformation is standard and not very convenient: the rear seat folds and rises vertically

But the smoothness of the ride ... Why does Mitsubishi constantly shake as if it were riding on square wheels? On any surface! Each pit accompanies you about fifty meters until you get into the next one - stopping at a traffic light, you feel like a road worker who has come off the puncher. And you won’t go faster than 40 km / h on the dirt road - where the L200 pickup truck easily allowed you to go 80 km / h. Moreover, on especially large bumps, it is noticeable that the compression stroke of the front suspension is selected almost completely.

Next to the two-arm front seat heating buttons is a rear differential lock button and a blind spot monitoring system switch. It's funny that the indicator of its work lights up even on the dashboard

But off-road Pajero Sport is still a fighter. The angle of entry has slightly decreased due to the massive front bumper, but the rear one, on the contrary, is extremely compact, and the ground clearance under the standard metal engine protection is 216 mm. Large Mud Terrain tires are begging for huge wheel arches, and there is plenty of winch space behind the front bumper. And if you crawl slowly along the ruts and gullies, then the suspension moves cause respect.

Next to the “automatic” selector is a transfer case control puck and large buttons for turning on the hill descent assistant and off-road modes of the traction control system. Program indication - on the instrument panel. You can change the set descent speed by using the gas and brake pedals.

Transmission modes are switched by a rotary washer, not a lever. As before, Pajero Sport allows you to drive in rear- and all-wheel drive modes, and on any road. Are we going down the ravine? The first step is to lock the center, then you can use a downshift with a number of 2.57 instead of the previous 1.90. Unfortunately, just like on the L200 pickup, it takes too long to wait for the actuators to fire. And in order to lock the differentials, you often also need to pull the car back and forth. Just like on the Niva!

Wiring in vulnerable places is laid carelessly (first slide), and the brake hose loop behind the rear axle (second slide) is very easy to tear off in a rut. Breathers are no longer brought high into the spars - they need to be redone to force fords and deep puddles. The regular metal protection is replete with slots for blowing the radiator package (third slide), but because of this, it will become an excellent dirt collector. But behind the front and rear bumpers there are powerful stationary eyes, and only a gas tank hangs from large parts below the frame

By the way, if you forcibly clamp the rear differential as well, then all auxiliary electronics will turn off, up to the ABS. But believe me, in some situations, the help of the traction control system will be very helpful. For example, on the rise, when one of the front wheels is unloaded and there is no way to take the hindrance in motion. Instead of useless frenzied slipping, the brake will gently grab the spinning wheel - and the Pajero Sport will continue to move.

Moreover, the number of off-road modes is even redundant: Gravel, Mud / Snow, Sand and Stones. The response to the gas pedal is the same in all positions, but in the Stones Pajero Sport practically does not allow slipping, and in the Mud, on the contrary, it allows the wheels to make several turns. Gravel and Sand are very close to each other and are located in the middle in terms of the degree of slippage. logical setting.

The permissible depth of the ford to be overcome is 800 mm, however, the air intake, although raised up, is directed in the direction of travel

And most importantly, the system really works. That's just to activate it, you need to turn off the rear differential lock. And how to move the car back and forth for this if it is already stuck?

And in general, now you will think ten more times whether to scratch the sides with branches, whether to drown in puddles. After all, Pajero Sport is no longer a “Japanese UAZ”: at least 2 million 750 thousand rubles for the Instyle version with leather interior, heated seats and steering wheel and 18-inch wheels. And the car in the Ultimate version, which we tested, is "loaded" with a system for monitoring blind spots and automatic braking - and they ask for another two hundred thousand more for it. For the first time in the history of Sport more expensive than Pajero!

Regular rear mudguards do not save the bumper from sandblasting from under the wheels

Maybe not move off the asphalt? But why then the frame, the continuous rear axle, all the locks - and this constant shaking even on a seemingly smooth road?

Of course, the suspension issue can be solved by tuning. However, for most, the new Sport is too expensive to build a "rogue" or expedition car out of it, and the threat of cancellation of registration for alterations is still relevant. And only managers from the Russian representative office of Mitsubishi can see a prestigious SUV in Sport.

Or I'm wrong?

Generations of Sports

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport first generation(1996-2010) was created on a shortened L200 pickup truck chassis with front independent torsion bar and rear dependent spring suspension. After the modernization of 2000, the rear springs were replaced with springs, in addition to the “fours”, petrol 2.4 (110 hp) and turbodiesel 2.5 (85 hp), a “six” (175 hp) appeared in the range of engines. In the US, the SUV was sold as Montero Sport, and, as a rule, with an advanced Super Select transmission, while in other markets it was sold with a hard-wired Easy Select front axle drive. 630 thousand cars were produced.

The second generation Pajero Sport has been produced since 2008, it was created on the chassis of the fourth generation L200 pickup truck. In the rear dependent suspension, springs were immediately used instead of springs, a seven-seater version appeared. Three petrol engines - 2.4 (160 hp), 3.0 (220 hp) and 3.5 (210 hp) - and two turbodiesels: 3.2 (200 hp) and 2.5 (up to 178 hp) pp.), transmission - only Super Select. It was originally produced at a factory in Thailand, and then assembled in Brazil, Venezuela, India, Bangladesh and Russia (from 2013 to 2015). To date, about 400 thousand cars have been produced.

The advantages and disadvantages of Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2018-2019 in a new body are identified based on feedback from real owners. More detailed pros and cons of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 3 diesel and gasoline with automatic and 4x4 all-wheel drive can be found in the stories below:

Owner reviews

By landing — while looking for my place. My back hurts, and because I am either in clothes or not, I have to adjust the chair. Of the chair adjustments, I noted the peculiarity that the seat cushion rises in the same way as on the Pajero Sport 2. The back part does not just go down, but back and down. Not habitual.

The review, as many have noted, is worse, but it is compensated by the presence of cameras in a circle and parking sensors. Passengers are very comfortable in all places, while there are more rear seats than in the 2nd generation Pajero. The only thing is that I drive passengers, including my wife, so that they do not leave scratches on door handles and polished inserts with their metal chains on bags and clothes.

The engine has not yet been run in, as the consumption is too big in my opinion, and I really don’t have enough torque at a speed of 100 km / h. Compared to a diesel engine, again, although the MPS2 has a five-speed automatic transmission, but here it has an eight-speed one. In general, we get used to each other.

Video review

Apparently, Mitsubishi did a very serious job on the bugs, but again, it could not do without jambs. I'll start with the look. It's an SUV! What for him this "manicure" in the form of chrome inserts? Roof rails do not inspire confidence at all, I think that you can forget about a normal expeditionary worker or collective farm something of your own.

Why removed plastic arch extensions? I bought additional arch extensions (64,000 rubles). The lower part of the bumpers is painted in body color. For what? I had to buy additional protection for the corners of the bumpers (58,000 rubles). I think we need to buy more lining on the doors, because here they didn’t even bother to glue the molding.

Salon: everything is much better here. The chairs are more comfortable, the handles are in place. However, the tunnel between the front seats has painted plastic, I think that it will rub off on the pants during the first year of operation and it will be necessary to collective farm something again.

Multimedia: modern, but not exciting. Somehow in Chinese. And for some reason, the USB was hidden in the armrest. Uncomfortable.

Review of Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2017 diesel 2.4 with all-wheel drive and automatic transmission

Where can I buy?

Bomb car. Smoothly powerfully goes on a cruise of 120 km / h, on the tachometer 1,900 - 2,000 rpm - beauty. Consumption on Moscow gasoline (LUKOIL) at a speed of 120 km / h on a cruise on the computer is 11.5 liters, and on the tank - 13 liters.

The suspension on the new Pajero Sport 3 does not work like on the Prado, you go there like a ship on the waves and all the bumps are swallowed like a stone thrown into the water, but here it resembles a rubber ball, smoothly passes the bumps at a reasonable speed, but if you go too far with speed, it will win back smoothly, but resiliently - somehow it is more knocked down compared to Toyota.

The owner drives a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 3.0 (209 HP) 2016.

Noise isolation — it's just awesome! You can't even compare with the previous generation of the model. I just don't hear cars around - that's one thing. Second, I can't hear the engine at all, and even when I'm picking up 4,000 rpm, I hear only the roar of the exhaust pipe in the area of the trunk and rear passenger seats. And the engines seem to be non-existent.

Music, thanks to the excellent noise, sounds great - 8 speakers are quite good. The new Mitsubishi Pajero 3 steers very easily, the buttons on the steering wheel are very pleasant to the touch and to press.
