DIY car painting what does that require.

It's nice to drive a sparkling and well-groomed car. Bright colors shimmer in the sun, creating the owner good mood. Everything can change in a moment and then...

The article introduces us to the methods of restoring the paintwork on cars. The material reveals the concept of applying car enamel to a vehicle.

In what cases is it necessary to restore the paint layer?

  • rain,
  • snow,
  • dirt,
  • sand,
  • stones,
  • temperature fluctuations,
  • washing

The paintwork of the car loses its attractiveness and fades over time. Automobile "scars" do not decorate the car. Thresholds, bumpers are especially affected by:

  • ricochet stones,
  • sand flying from oncoming traffic,
  • various types of mechanical car washes

Therefore, it is simply necessary to update the painting of the car body. Moreover, the paintwork is a protection against corrosion of the metal (body) of the car.

During acts of vandalism, riots, equipment often suffers. Resume appearance the car body in these cases will have to be the owner, whatever one may say!

The car is painted after body work vehicle involved in an accident.

Types of body painting, their concept

Restoration of the paintwork is necessary in the cases that we talked about earlier. There are two ways to paint car enamel on a car body:

  1. local painting of the paintwork,
  2. complete painting of the protective layer.

The concept of partial (local) painting of a car includes the restoration of the color of the color on a certain part of the car.

It may be necessary to carry out work on painting the protective layer on the hood or cover a. Restore color on bumper or doors.

Painting a car body element can be done in two ways:

  • without dismantling.
  • removing the damaged part.

Under the full painting understand the implementation painting works the entire car body. This is usually necessary after the restoration of the car injured during an accident.

To the left you go to the service station you will get. To the right you go to the garage you will get

What are we talking about? Yes, about places of repair! A rhetorical question arises, where to determine your car for painting. Give it to a service station or paint the car yourself.

Do-it-yourself car body painting possible under certain conditions.

If all conditions are created at the service station for work, then independent process requires certain knowledge, desire, tools and a suitable place.

It will be useful to watch a video about the preparatory process. Let's take a closer look at the process of painting a car with your own hands.

Stages of work

First of all, you need prepare the body of the car for painting. To do this, you need to wash the car. Wash off dirt using water and detergents. Remove existing bitumen.

ADVICE.

Pay special attention to the thresholds, the bottom of the doors!

The painting area (for example, a garage) should be comfortable. Approximately 2 meters around the perimeter of the machine. We pay attention to the ceiling, from which dust should not fall. The floor should be moistened with water.

When painting a car, dust can be absorbed into the freshly applied car enamel. Then all the work will go down the drain. Shagreen leather will appear on the surface, and obvious defects will be visible in the form of dust dots under a layer of paint.

In a word, the quality of work will not be the best. Remember that the quality of painting directly depends on the preparatory process of the working room.

Preparing for an independent change of car enamel on a car

We open a can of paint and act according to the instructions for use. We take a solvent and dilute the car enamel to the required density. We stir the contents. An electrode is ideal for this. Having lowered it into the paint and stirred, we raise the electrode. See how the paint flows. The frequency should be within 3-4 drops/sec.

Having brought to the desired consistency, pour the paint into the tank of the gun, using a nylon stocking as a sieve. We remind you that the nozzle of the gun should be No. 1.4. Operating pressure air from 2.5 to 3.0 atmospheres.

DIY painting process

Painting the body of a prepared car begins with the roof. Next, apply the first layer to outside car frame. Special attention we pay:

  • underhood space,
  • the inside of the lid,
  • doors.

Return- translational movements repeat the operation a second and then a third time. Thus, the car is covered with three layers of paint. After drying, the full depth of color will appear with a pronounced brilliance. For complete drying of the paint, it will take about 30 hours at t0 in the room + 20 0 С.

Adviсe

In the spray booth, wear a respirator. Take care of your health. The robe in which the work is supposed to be performed must be with buttoned sleeves. This prevents accidental touching in freshly applied paint. Headwear is required. It could be a baseball cap or a bandana. Sweat will not get on the painted surface. The compressor that supplies air to the spray gun is recommended to be installed outside the spray booth.

It is possible to paint the car with your own hands. For this you need:

  • wish,
  • certain knowledge,
  • tool.
  • room

Spray gun adjustment

When working with an airbrush, you can adjust the air and paint supply. To do this, the gun has three adjusting screws. The first is to adjust the outlet air pressure on the head. Thanks to this screw, it is possible to calibrate the drops of paint that will come out of the nozzle.

Video: Spray gun setup and painting sequence

The second screw is responsible for the shape of the paint-air mixture coming out of the nozzle, the so-called "torch". This screw can be used to increase or decrease the paint spray area. This adjustment allows you to paint over a surface of a large area, or a local small spot, without

The third screw adjusts the feed paintwork material, which will be captured by the air flow. This adjustment allows you to set the amount of ink consumed.

Structurally, all spray guns are almost the same, I can only differ in the location of the tank and adjusting screws. But the features of the work process in which the paint is applied are different. There are three types of process that are basic for all spray guns - spraying paint at high pressure, at low outlet pressure and medium pressure. The first two are completely different, and the third is a derivative of them.

Each of these methods has its own marking. High pressure spray guns are marked letter designation HP. An atomizer with low nozzle pressure is referred to as "HVLP". And the “LVLP” marking is for models that work with medium pressure. There are several more models with different markings (RP, HTE, MP, LVMP), but, in fact, they are only modified versions of the first three types.

Classification of spray guns by spraying paint

Spray pattern comparison for ink transfer efficiency

1. HP system spray guns

The first type of high-pressure spray guns, labeled "HP", are the most common. A feature of these guns is the high pressure at the outlet of the nozzle (about 1.5 atm.), despite the fact that air at a pressure of 2.5-5.0 atm must be supplied to the inlet to the spray gun. Due high pressure the air velocity at the outlet of the nozzle is sufficiently high. Because of this, the torch is quite wide, which ensures a more uniform application of the paint layer, and also affects the speed of work. At the same time, the flow rate of the air itself at the spray gun is relatively small, from 100 to 300 l / min.

  1. The main disadvantage of HP sprayers are big losses paint at work. High speed air at the outlet of the nozzle leads to the fact that when reaching the surface, the paint drops do not have time to stick to it and simply ricochet. Because of this, approximately 65% of the paintwork material is lost. The paint flying off from the surface forms a fine mist, gradually settling on the surfaces around. Only 30-35% of paint and varnish material is transferred to the surface to be painted.
  2. Another disadvantage is that during operation, the air flow, starting from the surface to be painted, forms air vortices. They capture small particles of litter in the air, press them against the paint layer, and they stick to it. As a result, after painting, grinding and polishing work will be required.

2. Spray guns of the HVLP system

HVLP nebulizers don't work that way. At their outlet, the air pressure is much lower - about 0.7 atm. At the same time, the inlet pressure remains high - 2.5-3.0 atm. It is possible to achieve a pressure drop due to the special structure of the air channels inside the spray gun.

Video: How to choose a spray gun. Spray systems.

Due to the low outlet pressure, the speed of air movement with paint particles is much lower. Because of this, paint drops have time to adhere well to the surface. This achieves a high percentage of paint transfer to the surface - up to 70%, only 30-35% of the paint is lost from the rebound. In this case, there is no formation of vortices, therefore additional work after painting is not required.

But such a painting process is accompanied by a significant air flow, the compressor must provide more than 360 l / min of air.

An additional disadvantage is the need for a small distance between the spray gun and the surface to be painted. Because of this, painting surfaces with difficult access and at a distance is quite difficult.

3. Spray guns of the LVLP system

When creating sprayers of the LVLP system, they combine positive traits the two types listed above. In such spray guns, a pressure of 0.7-1.2 atm is provided at the outlet, with an inlet pressure of 1.5-2.0 atm. Thanks to this, it was possible to ensure a high percentage of ink transfer - up to 75% with a low air consumption - 15-350 l / min. Therefore, such pistols are now a priority.

Nozzle specifications and gun selection

Let's move on to the characteristics of the nozzles. The size of the paint droplets that will be applied to the surface depends on them. The main characteristic of the nozzle is the diameter of the hole.

For different materials nozzles with different diameters are used. So, for base paints and varnishes, a nozzle with a hole diameter of 1.2-1.3 mm is suitable. For acrylic paints and varnish, you need a hole measuring 1.4-1.5 mm. But for liquid putty, the hole diameter should be 1.7-2.0 mm.

You can just entrust the work to children)

Not so many parameters affect the choice of an airbrush for painting a car.

  1. The first thing to consider is the compressor performance. It should provide twice the amount of air than the spray gun consumes. This will ensure the convenience of work, and also will not lead to the fact that the compressor will have to work with increased loads.
  2. The second parameter when choosing is the frequency of use. If a sprayer is purchased for infrequent work, then it is not necessary to buy a professional expensive model. For use in a garage, any inexpensive option is perfect.
  3. It is also important to determine the diameter of the nozzle. For domestic work, a nozzle with a diameter of 1.4 mm is optimal. It is suitable for most paints and varnishes.

Alternatively, you can purchase a spray gun with interchangeable nozzles. Such a gun will be a universal option and will suit absolutely all paints and varnishes.

Painting a car with your own hands is a laborious process that requires skills, preparation and at least a week of time. If for some reason you are going to paint a car with your own hands, then you need to know that the car painting technology consists of several stages.

1 Preparatory work before painting

First of all, the car must be thoroughly washed using a special car shampoo and other products that can remove any dirt that appears on the car body over time. After the successful completion of the first step, it is necessary to dismantle the car body parts. This is done using factory instructions and special tools. Before painting it is necessary to without fail remove the following items:

  • front and rear bumpers, and ;
  • optics front and rear, including direction indicators, fog lights etc.;
  • door sills or fenders, other details of external tuning.

After removing all the above parts, the body must be thoroughly washed again. detergent and solvent, removing any traces of contamination.

2 Correction of surface defects

After the first preparatory phase it is necessary to take the car to a well-lit area and carefully mark all visible body defects. It is recommended to mark them with colored chalk or special acrylic paint with a quick drying degree. This paint can be purchased at any car shop. Inspection is best done twice, so as not to miss any of the defects.

Next, you need to purchase a set of sandpaper, parameters 60, 80 or 90, it all depends on the thickness of the paintwork on your car, as well as a chisel or a well-sharpened screwdriver. It is necessary to clean defective places with sandpaper boldly, but carefully. Ideally, the area of the body surface cleaned to metal should be identical to the area of the original defect. This will avoid unnecessary waste of material during further painting of the machine.

Cleaned surfaces should be wiped with a cotton cloth soaked in solvent. In some cases, when the car body has undergone severe corrosion, it is cleaned of old paint before painting. However, it is very difficult to do it yourself, in similar cases resort to the services of specialized workshops with a paint shop.

3 Preparing the body - highlights

The car painting technology includes the mandatory work of puttying and priming the body before painting. You need to purchase a special polyester-based synthetic putty, as well as a set of spatulas, at the auto shop. In order to stir the solution, it is necessary to use a metal "spatula". In what proportion to mix the solution can be found in the manufacturer's instructions indicated on the jar of material. The mixture should be stirred for about a minute.

Having received the finished solution, it should be applied to defective places with translational movements. The end result is a smooth surface. In this case, the layer should be two to three millimeters larger than the layer of the old body paint. All this must be done as quickly as possible, since the finished solution is able to completely harden in 10-15 minutes. If lumps appear during application, then the use of the solution is no longer acceptable, and you need to knead a new one.

After the procedure, it is necessary to allow the material to dry. This takes 20 minutes to 1 hour. To understand that everything is done correctly, you need to go through the patched places with sandpaper. If the putty is poured with dry powder and does not stick to the emery surface, then everything has dried up properly. Using the same sandpaper, it is necessary to clean the puttied surface, leveling the layer with a layer of paint. With heavy dusting, you can add a little liquid to the sandpaper.

The final touch of this stage of work is the application of a primer. The primer can be purchased along with the paint - it is sold in special cans. When spraying it, you must use a respirator. After the primer dries, possible inaccuracies in the work done will immediately be evident. If none are found, then you can proceed to the next step.

4 Last preliminary stage

To work, you need to have masking tape and paper available - as a rule, newspaper sheets are used, they cost nothing and are great for covering places that will not be painted. This is primarily car glass, wheels and mirrors, as well as body parts that are not planned to be painted - in the event that painting the car with your own hands is partial.

After gluing all the parts, the entire body must be cleaned again of dust and dirt and wiped with a cloth soaked in a solvent to degrease the surface.

In the room in which the car will be painted with your own hands, there should be enough space for an indent of 2-2.5 meters when spraying paint. In addition, the room should be ventilated and clean, the floor can be wetted with a sprayer or polyethylene can be laid.

5 Painting a car at home - applying paint

If all of the above recommendations have been followed, it's time to start the painting procedure. The technology of painting a car is best observed if the paint is enameled, with a quick degree of drying. It is best to give preference to paints foreign manufacturers with special markings.

The paint is mixed with a solvent in the proportion recommended by the manufacturer. The mixture must be stirred for 5-6 minutes until the optimal density of the paint. Density can be determined using a metal rod. Dip the rod into the paint, and then gently raise it and observe the speed of dripping, best option- 4-5 drops per second.

For painting, you must have a working paint gun. The resulting paint is poured into the tank of the gun, while it must be properly filtered, for this you can use an ordinary nylon stocking. The paint supply pressure to the sprayer must be at least 2.5 atmospheres. Full painting always starts from the top of the car. It is better to paint in two layers, while pausing for 20-30 minutes to dry each layer.

After the final coat has been applied, the new coating must be allowed time to dry. Final drying lasts up to two days in a well-ventilated area with constant temperature not lower than 15 degrees.

X Do you still think that car diagnostics is difficult?

If you are reading these lines, then you have an interest in doing something yourself in the car and really save because you already know that:

  • Service stations break a lot of money for simple computer diagnostics
  • To find out the mistake you need to go to specialists
  • Simple wrenches work in the services, but you can’t find a good specialist

And of course you are tired of throwing money away, and it’s out of the question to ride around the service station all the time, then you need a simple AUTO SCANNER ROADGID S6 Pro, which connects to any car and through a regular smartphone you will always find a problem, pay off the CHECK and not bad save!!!

We have tested this scanner ourselves on different machines and he showed excellent results We now recommend it to EVERYONE! So that you don't get caught Chinese fake, we publish here a link to the official website of Autoscanner.

The first thing he is interested in is the price of this service in a paint shop. We can say with confidence that this service is not cheap and not every person can afford it, especially if you really want to paint the car normally. The only alternative that comes out in this case is self-painting the car at home.
High quality car paint

Yes, not everyone can do it, and this procedure is not easy - it requires not only paint, but skills and experience. A beginner is unlikely to be able to paint normally the first time and the result will not please the eye. It is advisable to pre-read some articles about this case and first practice on an old body or other bare metal.

Painting a car is not a banal dousing of a car from a bucket of paint, no, there is a different order of affairs here. You need to know how the technology goes, master every moment and gain skills that will help you cope with this case. Before you get down to business, keep in mind that this is a difficult event and it will not work out without preparation. Help to cope with this event so that the car looks normal after painting modern equipment which makes things easier. First of all, we need a compressor and a spray gun, which provides the surface of the body.

Preparatory activities

To correctly and need to understand how to work with a spray gun. It often happens that it is not a high-quality spray gun that is to blame for the poor color of the car.. It also happens that the body before painting is not sufficiently prepared. The latter is important in order to properly paint the car, so it’s worth paying enough attention to the preparation. Let's single out the following stages of preparing the machine:

Thorough car wash
  1. The surface of the body is thoroughly washed and dried with a directed air stream. It is necessary to blow out all the dust from under the hood, sills and trunks. It also does not hurt to use synthetic detergents;
  2. Before painting the car, degrease the surface of the body. For this, an alcohol solution, acetone or a common solvent is suitable;
  3. With an electric drill or grinder, we remove the old paint and grind the corrosion;
  4. The spray gun is also used to apply a primer. At the priming stage, it is necessary to immediately start processing the body in advance after. Drying is carried out by ordinary cooling, and it takes two to three hours correctly. If there is no time for this, then you can dry the body in an infrared chamber, where it will take 15 minutes;
  5. Next, you need to apply paint using an airbrush and other suitable equipment.

The choice for an ordinary beginner is between a high pressure, low or universal device. To properly paint, remember that the lion's share of the time is spent preparing for the action. If each stage took you a long time and in general you were satisfied with the work done, now you need to paint the car with paint. After buying an airbrush, you need to choose the diameter of the nozzle through which the paint can pass out.

Please note that painting with the same device will not work, the tool needs to be changed, or painting will not work. In this case, things depend on the viscosity of the liquid, so if the viscosity is 20, then you need to choose a nozzle with a diameter of 1.35 mm. And if the degree of viscosity rises to 33, then you have to choose a nozzle diameter of 1.77 mm.

To paint the car yourself, you also need to decide on the material used. Types of paints are conditionally divided into matte and metallic. Get matte paint easier for a beginner, since there is only one layer of coverage, without any additional effects. If you have a desire to paint a car in metallic, then here you will have to learn how to apply several layers of paintwork in order to achieve the desired effect. Also, certain difficulties arise if you want to partially paint the car - here you need to choose the right tone for the new paint to the old one. It is unlikely that you will be able to do without the services of a colorist.

Learning to use a spray gun

So, now we know that the machine can be learned, you just need to make some effort. But the confidence in the result also depends on how high-quality the spray gun is, which is used by the painter. Let's highlight certain rules that you need to follow in order to properly paint the car:

  1. Before painting, check the nozzle, you need to check the installation. In order to check it is necessary to unscrew the screw that regulates the air supply and adjust the size of the atomizer torch, the adjustment must be carried out for horizontal painting. After we move on to adjusting the consumption of paintwork material, it is important to paint the car. Please note that if you have to paint a lot, then you need to unscrew the paint supply screw completely. The following rule applies here: the more the paint supply screw is open, the wider the spray gun torch will be. Accordingly, it is necessary to make fewer passes in one plane. Initially, it is better to try to paint something else, and then proceed to the car;
  2. Proper painting auto requires, but when you make this setting, focus on the size of the part being painted. If you have to paint a small area, then put the spray gun on a narrow feed, because in this case a large wide torch is not needed. And, for example, when local is required, then put on a wide torch, since the hood is large and wide;
  3. In order for the quick painting of the car to be successful, hold the spray gun at a distance of 20 - 30 cm from the surface of the body. But keep in mind that this distance is proportional to the pressure of the atomizer, so be sure to move back if using. Proper painting requires that the machine be held perpendicular to the body of the car and the paint applied gradually and in a circular motion with a small radius. Watch out, it should not exceed half a meter per second, otherwise the layer will be thin. This advice is advisory in nature to a greater extent, so do not try to adhere to such an ideal routine - watch the layer thickness, do not exaggerate, and painting the car with an airbrush will turn out to be normal;
  4. In order not to miss inconspicuous areas that can inadvertently pass by, start immediately with them. Then, slowly moving to the wide details of the car, the result will become more noticeable. Also, in order to properly paint the car, try to keep your other hand out of the torch spray zone, otherwise you can accidentally put the paint unevenly;
  5. To paint the car evenly, start painting from the top, and then gradually work your way down to the areas below the roof and on the sides. Try to make short strokes in one direction, don't use long strokes. Ideally, it is better to paint in short circular motions, so final result turn out to be much better. In this case, the layer will turn out to be the most even and uniform in terms of thickness.

The spray gun described above, even for a novice painter, because the result in this difficult matter depends on experience and skills.

Heed the advice: before you start painting, find an old sheet of iron and practice on it. It is desirable that the surface that will act as a training surface is also smooth in order to check the quality of the paint applied to the body at the same time. With a hand full of painting, then similar manipulations can be carried out easier.

If in the process of painting a car the technology turns out to be incorrectly performed, then in certain places the paint layer will turn out to be uneven and it will look disgusting. Sometimes, after such a painting curve, the top layer resembles a withered orange, which only spoils the appearance of the car. To get away from such a bad effect, try to evenly apply layer by layer, do not shake or jerk your hand, try to maintain a single interval between the spray gun nozzle and the car body. Please note that in the case when the machine is painted in metallic, then move the spray gun from the bottom up to get an even coating of this type.

WATCH THE VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS

Remember that the sooner you cover one layer with the next, the more effective the result will be. In the case when you want to paint a car with a transition effect, then the hand movements should resemble brush throws on paper. Try to overlap with one layer another by a third, then the paint will come out thicker and it will be better to stay on the body. Following the correct technology, you need to apply three layers of paint in a row with an interval of half an hour for each to dry. However, make the first layer thin so that it is easier to paint on top.

There are few reasons forcing us to paint a car with our own hands. First of all, this may be due to mechanical damage body as a result of an accident, or with the age of your car, when the corrosive area of the body occupies about 30% of its entire surface. All this makes painting a car mandatory, but not a change of color due to your wife buying a new stylish dress, so, for harmony. Read more about how to paint a car, and will be discussed in this article.

To paint a car at home, you need to prepare the room. If we talk about the ideal option, then this is, of course, the creation of a spray booth in the conditions of your garage. This process very complex and overhead, so it would be better to follow some rules.

Cleanliness is the first thing to organize when preparing the room, as it should not contain any dust. Regardless of whether you are going to paint your car metallic or something else, perfect cleanliness is required to get the job done right. When using special spray booths, cleaning is not necessary - there is a filtration system for this purpose.

On a note! The temperature in the room also plays an important role in preparing the room for painting. If you are thinking about doing this winter period, then be sure to use additional heating devices.

Along with the room temperature an important factor remains the temperature of the painted surface of the car. Therefore, if you recently drove your car from a cold street into a heated garage, then do not rush to start painting - give the metal a little time to heat up. The temperature of the car and the air in the room should equalize.

Preparing the premises must be done in advance

Do not forget about lighting - this is one of the main points in the process of self-painting. There should be no shadows or glare on the surface of the body, so ensure that the lighting is even. Often, masters install several light sources on the ceiling and walls, distributing them in such a way that the light does not accumulate in one place, but illuminates the entire garage equally well.

Preparatory work

In any hard work, the beginning is considered the most difficult. When painting a car, you walk around it and have no idea where to start. First of all, the car body must be thoroughly washed, as dirt can hide various defects. You also need to be patient, because the painting itself will take no more than 10% of the time you spend, everything else is preparation.

After washing, you need to dismantle some parts:

  • decorative details on the body;
  • turn signals;
  • sidelights;
  • rear lights and headlights;
  • front and rear bumper;
  • body kits (if any).

After removing all these elements, clean them and place them in a separate place where paint or dust will not get during work. The details will come in handy only at the very end, when all the work is done and the paint has time to dry.

Tools and materials

No one starts painting without having everyone necessary tools. And yes, paint will need to be stocked up. This process must be planned in advance, because if you start painting the car, then for some time it will not be available for trips to the store for paint, which for some reason was not enough.

For work you will need:

  • polishing agent;
  • solvent;
  • dye;
  • primer;
  • if there is damage to the body, you need to buy a car putty;
  • degreaser;
  • a set of abrasive paper;
  • a device for manual grinding (a small wooden beam may be suitable);
  • grinder and grinding wheels for it;
  • spray gun;
  • compressor.

Now it is worth considering some of the items from this list in more detail. When choosing a spray gun and compressor, you should not save money - you need high-quality devices. There are specialists who, using an electric household spray gun, can paint a car perfectly, but without good experience it is almost impossible to do so. It is not necessary to buy equipment, at worst, you can borrow it for a few days from your friends or acquaintances.

What do you need to paint

The grinder is on this list for good reason, because with its help you will get rid of traces of old paint and rust. In addition, the final polishing of the body is also carried out by a grinder. If you have a choice, it is better to take a light tool with the ability to adjust the speed.

When choosing a varnish, paint and primer, it is advisable to buy products of the same brand. Thus, you will reduce the likelihood that the components will conflict with each other. If you decide to paint your car with metallic paint, then be careful when choosing a paint shade. Everything is clear with tools and materials, now you can get to work.

Surface cleaning and grinding

Before you paint your car, you need to clean its surface, and clean it properly. This can be done with a 3 mm screwdriver. You will also need a brush, sandpaper and a scraper. Be sure to examine the surface to be treated, whether there is paintwork any damage that it is desirable to get rid of (so that there are no sharp transitions).

Before painting the body must be cleaned

You can use a special washer to manually clean the bodywork, making this process easier and faster.

Wash recipe: mix 1 part paraffin and 4.5 parts xylene. Dissolve the components by heating them to 80C. After that, the mixture must be cooled to 50C and mixed with 4.5 parts of acetone. Treat the desired area of \u200b\u200bthe body with the prepared product, carefully applying it with a spatula. After 20 minutes, check the paint - it should begin to flake off.

Surface treatment of the bumper before painting must be carried out with white spirit. Use filter paper to evaluate the quality of the degreasing. If, after wiping the bumper with paper, there are traces on it, then the processing has not yet been completed. Repeat the procedure again until recheck will not give a positive result.

Putty application

For this purpose, polyester putty is most often used. To work, you will also need two spatulas: one rubber and the other metal. Be sure to read the instructions on the packaging of the putty before using it, this is important. Next, you just need to follow step by step instructions which is presented below.

Step 1. Apply fiberglass putty and hardener to the trowel. If you use a regular polyester putty, then the hardener should be added somewhere around 1.5-2%. IN this case this is not so critical, so you can add a little more hardener, like in the picture.

Preparation of material for filling

Step 2 Thoroughly mix the components until a homogeneous mass is obtained. To do this, you can use another spatula, knife or some other device. After you have stirred the putty, it can be applied to the surface.

Mixing putty with hardener

Step 3 Gently apply the mixture to the treated surface of the body. Try to fill in all the cracks and bumps, so you need to press it tightly.

Applying putty to the body

Step 4 Do not spare putty when working, if somewhere there is too much of it, then at the next stage you will still remove all unnecessary. The point is that when applying the putty, you need to repeat all the bends of the body parts.

Remove putty residue

Step 5 Treat the surface on which you have already applied putty with a grinder with a grinding wheel. Start with a coarse-grained circle.

Step 6 Now it's time for the polyester putty. Mix it with a small amount of hardener and apply to the treated surface of the body. It is stirred a little more difficult compared to the previous type of putty - this must be taken into account.

Step 7 Further, the procedure is no different from applying fiberglass putty: apply the mixture, process grinding wheels. Start sanding with P80 sandpaper, then use P120, and finally sand the surface with P180 sandpaper.

Step 8 That's all, the part is ready for further work. Treat with putty all parts of the body with defects.

Body ready for next step

Important! Checking the quality of filling work is checked by applying a small layer of primer to the surface to be treated. You need to do this from an aerosol can. If there are defects, then you can notice them and fix them instantly..

The final stage of surface preparation

Clean the surface of the body from dust, then protect the places that you will not paint. This can be done with old newspapers and painter's tape (the wheels also need to be fully covered).

Take P1200 sandpaper and process the entire body until its surface is dull. Then you need to wipe the car again with a rag with white spirit and dry it. When choosing auto enamel, it is desirable to give preference to those products that will be dried without baking. The choice of manufacturer is yours, you can buy matte paint or glossy - it depends on your preferences. Now you can start painting.

car painting

Preparatory work behind, it remains only to solve such an issue as painting a car. Try to start this process as soon as possible after preparation so that the body does not have time to get dirty again. The paint is mixed in the spray gun itself before painting (using a solvent, get the necessary viscosity), but before that it must be passed through gauze or a sieve to remove small particles.

Step 1. Apply acid primer to repair areas with a spray gun. This is an effective anti-corrosion and anti-adhesion agent that protects the car body metal from corrosion. The most popular acid soil manufacturer is Radex.

Step 2 Apply a layer of acrylic primer over the acid primer. This special substance, resistant to temperature changes, is able not only to protect the body from rust, but also to hide the unevenness of its surface before applying paint.

Step 3 Apply the first layer of paint, before that heating it to the required temperature (approximately 50C). Preheating will reduce paint consumption.

Step 4 Paint the bumpers, fenders, and other small details that you removed at first. To do this, install them on a hill for convenience, laying a film or paper under the part.

Wings, bumpers and other removed parts also need to be painted

Step 5 The second coat of paint is the most crucial moment of painting, so apply it carefully. Avoid smudges and bald spots on the surface.

Step 6 Install all painted parts in place. The car is painted and ready to go.

    If we compare the two processes, painting and varnishing, then the last of them is not so difficult, but it still needs to be approached with responsibility. Often, for this purpose, HS (High Solid) varnish is used with high content dry matter in its composition, but many experts still prefer to use MS varnish (Medium Solid). This choice is due to the ease of processing, although the economy of the material is lost.

    Mix the fixative, thinner and varnish, and for applying the first layer you need a slightly diluted composition. For the next steps, you can use more liquid solution. Applying 2 or 3 layers of varnish is considered optimal. At the same time, it is necessary to follow the application of varnish in the same way as when painting (smudges should not appear).

    The varnished body should dry naturally, and no devices are required to check the level of drying - you can do it yourself. Touch the coating with your finger: if the finger sticks to the surface, but the applied layer of varnish does not smear, then you can start applying the next layers. In the presence of minor smearing, smudges or stains, it is advisable to remove the layer and apply it again.

    Polishing a car after painting is the final step in transforming your car from an old beat-up bucket to a new and shiny swallow. This can be done using sandpaper from P2000 and finer, as well as special abrasive products. In the second case, you need to be extremely careful. Apply the abrasive to the surface of the body carefully, because it is a chemical that can corrode paint and varnish.

    As a conclusion

    Several spotlights can help you with painting, because with the help of good lighting you can achieve a high-quality result. In addition, such devices play the role of a heater, which is why the paint dries on the body much faster. When choosing spotlights, give preference to devices whose power is more than 500 watts.

    How to paint a car with your own hands

    In conclusion, it is worth noting that self-painting a car is a completely affordable process. You just need to stock up on time, patience and you will definitely succeed!
