We compare wipers of different types: frame, frameless, hybrid, winter - and different manufacturers. 14 samples are being examined. Does "more expensive" always mean "better"?
They promised to find a replacement for mechanical glass cleaners several decades ago. We were going to use a powerful air flow and even ultrasound: they say that the windshield, vibrating at a frequency of about 30 MHz, will get rid of any pollution. Perhaps over time it will be so, but so far even the most prestigious cars. What can we say about Samara and, "shnives" and! On such machines, wipers with a length of 500-510 mm are used. We took the brushes of this popular size for the test.
The tests were carried out on a Lada car. The surface of the glass was thoroughly washed and degreased, after which, before each measurement, an artificial pollutant based on a solution of calcium carbonate - chalk, in other words, was applied to it in a uniform layer. The solution was allowed to dry for a minute, after which the wiper mechanism was turned on with driver's side for one stroke without the use of a standard washer - and the condition of the glass surface was assessed after the brush was swung. The third test was to test the wiper blades for resistance to air aging. To do this, the brush is pressed against flat glass, heated to 60 degrees and kept at this temperature for 96 hours. Then the brush is installed in the wiper and the quality of cleaning is checked.
Next, the wiper blades were tested for performance in frost. The brushes were placed in a freezer and cooled down to -40 º°C, kept at this temperature for 24 hours, then installed on automotive glass, and the quality of cleaning was checked. Anticipating the questions of some readers who may object that no one uses brushes in such a frost, we will refer to the technical specifications, which indicate that the wiper blades must be operable from -50 to +60 ºС.
In addition, glass cleaning this test we carried out with tap water, which had a temperature of 24 º°С, at an ambient temperature of 22 º°С, therefore, according to our calculations, it turns out that the brushes work outdoors at a temperature of about -20 º°С, and at this temperature, as residents of megacities know, liquid reagent, which is sprayed on the roads, is lifted by the wheels of the cars in front and settles on the windshield.
The fifth test was a test for the resistance of the brushes to washer fluid. To do this, the brushes are placed first in a 50-degree solution of isopropyl alcohol, and then for 24 hours in a thermostat at a temperature of 70 ºС. We deviated a little from the test methodology and replaced isopropyl alcohol with ethyl alcohol.
For the test, we took the brushes that are installed on the VAZ-2110, due to the complex shape of the glass, the brushes have to work
in more difficult conditions compared to flat glass.

As described above in our methodology, first of all we check the non-adherence of the brush to the windshield on the passenger side, since the VAZ-2110 has a wiper tip

According to the results of the comparison, it can be seen that AIRLINE brushes have the least non-adherence to the glass in the parking position, that is, visibility with right side will be slightly better than when using other tested brushes.
The next test was to evaluate the cleaning quality of the new brushes.
According to the test method, the quality of cleaning is evaluated in one upward stroke, but it is also allowed to evaluate it in an upward and downward direction. We have evaluated both methods. We also evaluated how wide the strip leaves each brush during the reverse stroke and how many millimeters the lower edge of the brush smears when the wiper moves up and down.
Table 2 shows the results of the AIRLINE wiper test.
The average result of the cleaning quality of the AIRLINE brushes in the upward stroke is 1.3 points; seven brushes receive a deserved top 1 point, and three brushes - 2 points. When going up and down
the average is 1.2 points.
When moving up, the water being cleaned falls on the plastic body of the brush, and when moving back, the drops fall onto the glass, which is recorded in the table. The brush smears a little from below and pulls out a strip with an average width of 35 mm during the reverse stroke.
Table 3 shows the performance of the AVS brushes.
The average clearing score for a single upstroke is 1.6 points; seven brushes receive a well-deserved 1 point. But when moving up and down, nine out of ten brushes leave no traces of water, except for drops that break off the brush body, so 1.1 points for cleaning quality. The brush slightly smears the water with its lower edge, and during the reverse stroke, the wiper pulls back a strip up to 25 mm wide.
The brushes we have taken have a wider mount than the 8 mm wide hook provided for on the VAZ-2110, so all the brushes emit an annoying knock with each shift.
Table 4 shows the test results for the Bosch Aerotwin brushes.

The average clearing score for a single upstroke is 1.1 points; nine out of ten brushes receive the highest rating - 1 point. When moving up and down, 50% of the brushes leave no traces of water, even drops that are sprayed by other brushes during the reverse stroke. But the average score for a double move was only 1.4 points.
The brush slightly smears the water with its lower edge, and during the reverse stroke, the wiper pulls back a strip up to 25 mm wide.
The wipers from LYNXauto were tested last, the results are presented in Table 5.
The average score for cleaning with a single upward move is exactly 2 points; only four out of ten brushes clean 1 point. With a double stroke, the cleaning quality increases - seven wipers out of ten do not leave traces of water. The average score is 1.6. The brush practically does not smear the lower edge, however, when moving backwards, it pulls out strips up to 30 mm wide.
In the third test, the resistance of the brushes to aging in air was tested (Table 6).
After heating to 60 degrees and holding at this temperature, the AIRLINE and AVS brushes proved to be the best - they leave the least marks on the glass.
The most frost-resistant wipers were LYNXauto and Bosch Aerotwin.
Unlike other brushes, they do not leave wide uncleaned streaks.
The last test tested the brushes for resistance to aging in washer fluid (Table 8).
Bosch Aerotwin plastic brush holders after last test changed the color from black to gray, in addition, the plastic became hard, and when the brush holder latch was opened, it broke. In addition, Bosch Aerotwin brushes move in jerks - apparently, during the test, the protective covering, which ensured the smooth running of the rubber scraper of the brush.
The AIRLINE and AVS brushes have warped the rubber scraper, as a result of which the quality of glass cleaning should deteriorate. LYNXauto didn't lose any quality compared to the initial test.
conclusions
Before proceeding to the placement of brushes in places, it should be noted once again a few important points. Firstly, there are no frankly “weak” products in the four we have chosen, for the test we selected only those brushes that we are sure of.
Secondly, we note once again that our testing methodology is based on specifications AvtoVAZ, and we awarded places not on the quality of the brush for the end consumer (we made the final assessment without taking into account the price of the wipers), but based on the compliance of the brushes with the requirements of AvtoVAZ technical specifications. The conditions set by us are significantly tougher than those in which the brushes in most machines have to work. Russian motorists, so each of the tested brushes is suitable for daily operation in city cars in central Russia and will probably fully serve its warranty period.
Thirdly, we recommend that you familiarize yourself not only with the brush ratings, but also with their price rating to draw their own conclusions about their consumer qualities- We deliberately did not include the price in the overall assessment of the quality of the brushes. Agree that the BMW 7 Series and Chevrolet Niva Both deserve the right to be present in the market. But one of them will not pull the budget of the usual Russian family, and the other will not be able to satisfy the needs of an ordinary Moscow official ...
1st place: LYNXauto
There were two contenders for victory in the testing process, but after the last test, LYNXauto brushes took the lead - they get the first place. Trouble-free brushes – hot or cold, although only four out of ten brushes clean perfectly on the upstroke, and seven out of ten brushes on the double stroke. Do not warp when using alcohol solutions. I would like to see an explanatory table of applicability on the packaging of brushes, like, for example, AIRLINE.
2nd place: Bosch Aerotwin
These brushes are for the quality of glass cleaning in normal conditions have the highest score in 90% of cases. They clean both in the cold and in the heat, but they are not friendly with alcohol liquids. Plastic holders and rubber scrapers change their properties: plastic tans and loses color, and rubber scrapers experience strong friction during movement, as a result of which the brush moves in jerks.
3rd place: AIRLINE and AVS
Windshield wipers AIRLINE and AVS
showed the same good quality cleaning under normal conditions.
Seven out of ten AIRLINE brushes clean the glass perfectly on the upward stroke, and nine out of ten brushes on the double stroke. Best result in the air aging test, but do not like frost, and the rubber wiper warps from alcohol liquid - the fourth result in the washer fluid resistance test. The best result in the test for non-adherence to glass with a large curvature. AVS wipers have similar performance in terms of cleaning quality. Seven brushes out of ten do not leave a drop of water on the glass on the upward stroke, and clean on the double stroke
in 90% of cases. They also do not like cold and tolerate heat and alcohol solution a little worse.
The packages of AIRLINE and AVS brushes are provided with detailed application tables, but due to the excessive information content, AVS used too small a font - you have to look closely.
