The rating is based on official data published by the manufacturers themselves. The statistics of the analytical site Focus2move were also used.
The rating takes into account the production statistics of automotive alliances, which may include several companies or brands. So, for example, the statistics does not take into account individual manufacturers, such as Audi, Volkswagen, SEAT and Skoda, but the entire Volkswagen group, which includes all these brands.
The same goes for alliances. The rating does not provide separate data for Renault and Nissan. In it, these manufacturers are accounted for as one big company. In addition, in 2017, the French-Japanese alliance became the owner of a controlling stake in Mitsubishi, which allowed the partners to improve production statistics.
Together, the statistics of Korean manufacturers Kia and Hyundai are also considered, since the latter owns a controlling stake in Kia Motors.
Another deal that has affected the balance of power in the ranking of the world's largest automakers is the change of ownership of Opel. In 2017, the American General Motors sold its German asset to the French concern PSA, which is better known as Peugeot-Citroen.
Today, Groupe PSA includes five car brands: Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel and Vauxhall (Opel cars are sold under this brand in some countries).
In the table below you will find the following information:
- the name of the largest automakers in the world;
- the volume of cars produced;
- dynamics - change in production volumes compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

Since then, people have been constantly improving their invention, releasing hundreds of thousands of new products every year around the world.
Among all countries with a developed light industry, the six leaders in the production of automobiles stand out favorably.

No. 4 Germany - 6 million units in 2015
Internal combustion engines were invented by the inhabitants of Germany, Karl Benz and Nicholas Otto. Immediately, people thought of installing the motor on a wheeled cart. The companies founded in those days are now large concerns. Among European countries, Germany occupies a leading position in the production of quality vehicles.

- mercedes benz- a company that immediately produced expensive cars, but over time began to produce high-quality small cars.
- Opel was originally a German brand, but the Americans bought it and now it is part of General Motors.
- bmw is a manufacturer of luxury cars. The release is quite small, but a successful branding policy has allowed the company to become popular among young people.
No. 5 South Korea - 4.5 million units in 2015
The auto industry of South Korea originated in the middle of the twentieth century. For the first few decades, copies of famous European models were produced. But then, involving foreign experts, they began to develop their own cars.
Machine manufacturers:
- KIA has factories all over the world - in Turkey, North America, China, India, etc.
- Hyundai is the largest automotive company in Korea.
No. 6 India - 4.1 million units in 2015
India's automotive industry is growing at a fast pace and thanks to its vigor it is already ranked 6th in the world. The factories of many foreign concerns are located on the territory of the state, but there are also purely national productions.
Indian brands:
- force specializes in the production of trucks, buses and agricultural machinery.
- Tata- a company that produces passenger cars and commercial vehicles, as well as engines of the same name.
The rapid development of the automotive industry in some countries and the decline in production in others change this ranking every year. For several years, China has held the first place. But will it always be like this?

- Germany clearly towers over all automakers. The Germans account for more than $150 billion in automotive exports, more than a fifth of all world exports.
- Japan ($91.9 billion) is the world's second largest auto exporter. Companies such as Honda, Toyota and Nissan generally have no problem with foreign buyers, and as a result, the country is well ahead of the United States, which is in third place ($53.8 billion). This is partly due to the fact that Japan is geographically closer to the largest car fleet in the world, China. It's much easier to sell cars when you make them close to where the buyers live.
Recall that it sounds like this: “Promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and, by 2030, significantly increase the level of employment in industry and the share of industrial production in gross domestic product in line with national conditions and double the corresponding rates in the least developed countries.”
