Nowadays, diagnosing a car using a smartphone is not new at all. With certain low-cost hardware and phone apps, it's possible to make a diagnosis when the car's dash icon lights up. check engine. Today we’ll talk about how to make car diagnostics via phone, about the history of research on this issue and about diagnostic devices: GoPoint Technology GL1 and BT1, iOBD and BlueDriver.

Research history

Since the early 1980s, most vehicles have been equipped with on-board computers with an on-board diagnostic socket (OBD). And since 1996, new connectors with OBD-II began to appear on many cars - modern standard connection (which is often located in the cabin, near the steering column), compatible with any personal computer. For the EU market, cars with OBD-II have been produced since 2001, gasoline, and since 2004 - diesel, and for the Japanese market since 2004. At that time, in order to analyze data from the electronic system of the machine, expensive equipment was needed. But today it’s the 21st century, and thanks to the data that the computer of a modern car gives out, you can track anything through special applications installed on a smartphone. Such programs allow you to improve machine control, and even save money.

Interesting to know! Prior to OBD-II, there was a version of OBD-I in 1989, but it was not widely used.

What do we have today

It is possible to check the condition of the gearbox and engine of the car in a car service using computer diagnostics, but a smartphone is the same computer, therefore, using a cable for the diagnostic connector and special programs he is completely up to the task. In addition, you can observe how the engine works in motion, which they will not do in a car service. Important: There are different variants connecting devices for car diagnostics: using a cable, via Bluetooth and via Wi-fi.

GoPoint Technology GL1 and BT1

These are two devices for testing and diagnosing a car: GL1 is a cable, and BT1 is a Bluetooth transmitter, and in all other respects they are functionally the same. According to the manufacturers, these devices are certified by Apple and are compatible with the iPhone. The devices come with their native GoPoint program, which reads and resets error codes (Check Engine), and also sets the engine speed, coolant temperature, machine speed during a quick scan. The application can also perform real-time diagnostics and apply data after caching.

Do you know? Currently under development a new version car diagnostics OBD-III.

iOBD

The device allows you to connect your car to your smartphone by simply inserting it into the car's OBD connector and connecting via Wi-Fi to your smartphone. iOBD has a rich user interface and can be applied to all OBD-II compliant vehicles. The device reproduces fault codes, describes them and resets them. iOBD makes it possible to diagnose electronic parameters auto via phone, such as: fuel and engine sensors (coolant temperature, lambda probe, pressure in fuel system and manifold), the number of engine revolutions. Monitoring of the engine operation is performed on the basis of data from the cache or in real time. iOBD has two diagnostic modes: sport and cruise, and is compatible with both Android and iOS devices.

BlueDriver

This is another device for testing and diagnosing a car, which can be bought on the official website of the manufacturer, and it only works with the BlueDriver utility from Lemur Vehicle Monitors and Apple mechanisms. This device the simplest of all mentioned and not overloaded with unnecessary information. BlueDriver logs various trouble codes for further troubleshooting and alerts when the speed increases.

Important! BlueDriver has the option to import car system scan results to Facebook wall and send tweets.

What options do these devices have?

With the help of such devices, you can diagnose the car yourself, without going to the bus station. By installing just a few applications on your phone, you can get a lot of information hidden from you while driving a car, and make a complete professional test of all electronic systems a car that you could previously get only by going to a car service for diagnostics. The capabilities of the devices depend on the use of the software. Often this is a diagnosis of the transmission and engine of a car, but there are also commercial programs that support additional protocols from car manufacturers that allow you to work with other car blocks.

What cars are supported

Mobile diagnostics is supported by cars that have an OBD-II port, and, as you already know, most cars manufactured since 1996 are equipped with this port. You can name such cars: Acura, Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Buick, Byd, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chery, Chrysler, Citroen, Daihatsu, Daewoo, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes , Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Opel, Peugeot, Pontiac, Porsche, Renault, Saab, Saturn, Scion, Seat, Skoda, Smart, SsangYong, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo, Lada Priora, Chevrolet Niva, VAZ 2105, 2107, 2110, 2114, 111740, VAZ Kalina, and others.

This is interesting! The first versions of the OBD in case of malfunctions lit the MIL lamp - a malfunction indicator lamp, but it did not provide any information about the nature of the damage. Master key: car diagnostics with smartphone.

How to diagnose a car

To diagnose a car through a phone, you must first insert the adapter into the OBD connector of the car, and then set up the network. To do this, go to the Wi-Fi settings, select the WiFiOBD network and enter the data: IP Address, subnet mask. Next, set up the program: open it and go to the settings. Then you need to establish a connection with the machine.

Car diagnostics on a laptop: how to do it yourself?

Pros usually advise for beginners a standard diagnostic scanner "Smart Scan Tool", because with other options there can be all sorts of problems - from model incompatibility to the possibility of a serious breakdown of the electronic system of the machine.

Hello to all visitors of my autoblog!

Today I will introduce you to such a wonderful and super-useful thing as do-it-yourself car diagnostics through a laptop.

Indeed, for a considerable part of motorists, service stations, including computer diagnostics, are an expensive service that hits the pocket. And here, mastering the skills of self-diagnosing a car, even at the most superficial level, can significantly save your costs.

Moreover, with a set of experience, even an ordinary car enthusiast is quite capable of mastering professional levels of diagnostics and, if desired, even making good money on it.

To get started, it would be best to master self-diagnosis using a regular laptop and some simple, inexpensive, but reliable, and, most importantly, universal scanner.
In this review, I offer you basic concepts for initial orientation in this area of automation.

A bit of history

Computer diagnostics of cars already has quite a solid history, exceeding 35 years. summer period: in 1980, General Motors commercially introduced the ALDL diagnostic interface into production technology to monitor the status of all vehicle systems, as well as the ECM protocol, which was used for diagnostic tests of the control modules of the propulsion unit.

In the early 90s, a universal diagnostic protocol for vehicles was created in the United States, which is still used today: OBD (On Board Diagnostic - diagnostics of on-board equipment), and since 1996 its improved version OBD-2 has become technologically mandatory for US cars and Canada.

Since 2000, the European version of this protocol (EOBD), by the EU Directive (98/69), has been introduced into cars produced and sold in the European Union on a mandatory basis for gasoline vehicles, and since 2004 for diesel vehicles.

Japan also introduced its own version of the protocol (JOBD) in 2003 for all its machines.

That is, now, generally speaking, the vast majority of even very old cars (up to 20 years old) are adapted to the computer diagnostic system. And according to the indicated historical milestones, you can assume the presence or absence of this adaptation in a particular machine.

Electronic control unit

Modern vehicles are equipped with an electronic brain that combines diagnostic sensors and control modules of all systems and subsystems of the machine, through which you can monitor the current state, make performance forecasts, adjust various technical parameters and troubleshoot some problems.

Such an ECU center is called (electronic control unit) and for technical monitoring or making any changes and corrections to the auto system, an external diagnostic interface is connected to it.

What he really is?

Usually this is a combination of a special controller (OBD-2 protocol specifier), some kind of data processor, special software and means of connecting all this. Now I will explain to you in a more Russian language what's what, presenting a general concept:

  • The ECU of the machine necessarily has an external output-connector, to which the key element for such diagnostics is connected - an OBD adapter (scanner), which converts and unifies the data stream from the ECU controller so that they can be read by external connected devices.
  • Various diagnostic devices, both special and general purpose: professional diagnostic scanners, smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktops. Under the platforms of these devices (iOS, Android or Windows), there are corresponding diagnostic programs.
  • As a means of connection, a regular computer data cable (with various adapters, if necessary) or wireless Wi-Fi and Bluetooth protocols can be used.

This information has given you the most general idea about the principles of computer diagnostics. Now you can understand it in more detail.

Diagnostic options

Functionally, computer diagnostics conducts an electronic inspection of car systems and displays the data obtained in the form of graphical indicators, as well as in the form of error codes, with which you can correct breakdowns or prevent them.

Even on entry level mastering the skills of computer diagnostics, among other things, you will have access to:

  • Checking the quality of the maintenance carried out;
  • More accurate planning of car service works and budget savings;
  • More accurate determination of the state of the machine;
  • Self definition the nature of the malfunctions when the lamp signal "Check engine".

Of course, even for such a short list of features, a motorist needs some basic skills:

  • Ability to work with a computer and software at the level of an ordinary user;
  • Basic understanding of the electronic and electrical systems of a car in relation to the brand / model;
  • Ability to work with Internet catalogs and databases of DTC errors in order to correctly decrypt incoming data.

However, even if your knowledge is very small, you will still get a lot of valuable and understandable information for any driver simply from the graphic indicators of the programs. Moreover, all this can be done completely free of charge at any time and in any place, promptly responding in accordance with the data received.

Self-diagnosis of a car through a laptop

What you need for diagnosis

Now let's look at what you need for computer diagnostics.

The list is roughly as follows:

  • Computer - in our case it will be a regular laptop, but it is desirable that it has built-in or external Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules;
  • Adapter-specifier (scanner) - in our case, take the easiest and most popular "Smart Scan Tool", which ;
  • Specialized diagnostic software - there are a lot of them and the choice depends on personal preferences, as an option, you can try several programs and choose the one you like;
  • Internet databases with data on decoding the displayed errors - there are a sufficient number of them on the network for all models;
  • Interface (computer) data cable - you may need it for direct connection to the car port only if you have problems with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth access on your laptop.

Laptop

For a quick express check of the car’s systems in field conditions, a smartphone is more simple and convenient than a laptop, but only the latter will allow the driver to master diagnostics at a serious level, with the possibility of installing professional diagnostic software in the future.

There are no special requirements for the laptop itself, except for the desirable presence of a standard COM port (an RS-232 socket for a data cable) and some kind of wireless access unit - Bluetooth is best suited for this, not Wi-Fi, because It is bluetooth access that most popular scanner adapters have.

Of course, you can check the machine on a stationary PC, but a laptop allows you to do this on the go, and it is simply more convenient as a small but powerful and self-sufficient device.

If something is missing in your laptop: a COM port or Bluetooth / Wi-Fi, then adapters, as well as external wireless modules, will solve the problem. Here I advise you not to save on a Bluetooth adapter and choose a device from the mid-price segment, because. budget models low power and often refuse to see paired devices.

Scanner

The scanner adapter has the form of a small plug-in device containing the main chip circuit, as well as blocks of connectors, data transmission, a signal and sometimes a control panel.

The scanner adapts the information streams from the on-board computer for their transfer to a regular one, where it is processed and displayed in a readable form.

Adapters are different: some, usually professional or semi-professional service and dealer scanners, can only work with some specific brands auto. For example, the Vasya-Diagnost scanner (with humor, the developers turned out to be ;-)) is intended only for cars of the VAG concern.

But we are more interested in multi-brand adapters that can work with many car brands. Here, the undoubted superiority, both in terms of versatility and in terms of price / quality ratio, is held by the already mentioned by me OBD-scanner "Smart Scan Tool", which is based on the ELM323/327 chip.

This OBD-scanner is adapted for almost all modern cars, up to 20 years old (starting from 1996 release). "Smart Scan Tool" sells for around $30 and gives you the ability to monitor in real time from all sensors, fix and correct errors, and customize the entire system of the machine.

On this video you can see the work with the ELM-327 OBD-scanner:

Programs

Software usually comes with an adapter, but it can also be downloaded from the Internet.

The functionality of the programs can be very different. Here is some part of what most applications have, for a general idea:

  • Displaying the basic parameters and operating conditions of all vehicle systems;
  • Reading fault codes;
  • Decryption of error codes;
  • Erasing errors after eliminating their cause;
  • Determining and commenting on the status of errors;
  • Maintaining all kinds of reports, logs on malfunctions and maintenance.

As I said, there are many such programs.

Here are the ones that have gained the most popularity among motorists:

  • "Uniscan" is a series of software used for diagnostic testing of almost any car of major manufacturers (USA, EU, Japan, Korea) not older than 2001: Ford, Chevrolet, Nissan, Toyota, KIA, Daewoo, BMW, Opel, etc. .
  • "Motor-Tester" is a very powerful semi-professional program with which you can diagnose many cars Russian production(VAZ, UAZ, GAZ, etc.).
  • "Vagcom" and "Vag Tool" are two programs for diagnosing machines belonging to the so-called. VAG group (Volkswagen-Audi-group). Allows you to work with brands such as Audi, Seat, Volkswagen, Skoda, etc.

How to diagnose a car through a laptop

You already know everything you need for computer verification. Now it remains to describe the procedure itself.

Here is what you need to do step by step:

  1. Prepare everything you need and assemble in the car (laptop, scanner).
  2. Turn on the laptop - one of the auto-diagnostic programs should be installed on it.
  3. Locate the diagnostic connector in the car - it may be in different places(throughout dashboard, as well as under the hood), but usually it is located in the area of the steering column.
  4. Insert the scanner into the connector and turn it on (if required) - the connection indicator will light up;
  5. Check the correctness of the Bluetooth connection and pair the devices - the ready-to-work indicator will light up;
  6. Open the autodiagnostic program and connect the data stream from the car to it. If everything is correct, the program will signal that it sees a car and start processing the incoming data, after which it will display the main parameters on the screen.
  7. When working with the program interface, set commands to check, configure or correct what you need, read the data.
  8. If you need a deeper check, save the codes of the detected errors to a file and analyze them through any Internet resource, for example, through this directory, or through this service.

The basic parameters check itself will not cause any difficulties for anyone, especially when using OBD scanner ELM327, but for a deeper diagnosis, you need to study the capabilities of the auto-diagnostic program well and gain some experience.

  • Keep in mind that the length of the data cable during auto-diagnostics matters - the smaller it is, the better. Often, with a cable length of 5 m, the scanner does not work or does not work correctly.
  • Before using the purchased scanner adapter, carefully read the instruction manual for its operation.
  • When carrying out diagnostics, connect and configure the scanner and laptop with the ignition off - turn it on after all the settings, because otherwise there is a risk of damage to the on-board computer.

Conclusion

After reading this introductory article, you realized that the era of simple mechanical transport is coming to its end, and without computer diagnostics, full-fledged car maintenance is impossible. Good news here is that almost any driver has the opportunity to do such a check on their own, saving their money and time.

Maybe someone has already mastered self-diagnosis car through a laptop and has some practical experience? Then it can be posted in the comments of the blog, for which visitors, I am sure, will be grateful to the author.

      Hello, Alexander.

      If you mean a universal diagnostic adapter for all cars, then this does not exist yet. There are diagnostic adapters, which can be conditionally called universal, with a connection to a USB port - the KKL USB VAG-COM 409.1 adapter, for example (the price is around 1 thousand rubles). This adapter diagnoses many car brands (including domestic and Japanese), but not all.

      If you could not find a USB-connected diagnostic adapter for your brand/model, then buy what you can find and connect the diagnostician to your laptop via conventional socket adapters. For example, connect a diagnostic adapter connected via a COM port using a COM-USB adapter. There are a lot of such devices - it costs about 500 rubles.

      All the best to you, Alexander.

When deciding to purchase a car, first of all, many buyers pay attention to the operational and technical properties of the car, its design and other paraphernalia. However, not all of them think about the safety of the future car. Of course, this is sad, because often ...

The main task that the program performs for diagnosing a computer is to obtain as much information as possible about the software and hardware of the device.

With its help, they determine whether there are enough resources to run a particular application, check the characteristics of the system, components and their state.

Such programs are especially important for a person who, for whatever reason, needs to know the parameters of someone else's computer and to correct errors.

The need for system monitoring

Applications that can be used to diagnose the system are required to obtain important information which will help:

  1. Determine how much memory is installed on your computer, its type and number of slots. After that, it will be much easier to choose a new suitable RAM or conclude that it is worth replacing the entire motherboard or computer (laptop);
  2. Understand exactly how to prepare for the release of the expected game - add memory, install a more powerful processor, purchase an additional HDD or video card
  3. Determine the temperature of the GPU and CPU, identifying the need to replace thermal paste;
  4. Find out why they don't work installed programs and the computer freezes - due to incorrect drivers, insufficient video memory, or hardware malfunction.

CPU-Z

The free CPU-Z program has an unpretentious interface and allows you to get technical information about almost all elements of a computer:

  • Processor (including its model, architecture, socket, voltage, frequency, multiplier, cache sizes and number of cores);
  • Motherboard (brand, model, BIOS version, supported memory types);
  • RAM (volume, type and frequency);

The main advantages of the application is the ability to obtain detailed and accurate information in Russian about all components of the system.

It can be useful for professional users and hobbyists.

Among the minuses is the inability to determine the temperature of the processors.

Speccy

Its name can be deciphered as System Info for Windows.

It has a small size and a simplified interface, reminiscent of the standard Windows utilities and is able to provide all the most necessary information for the user.

So, for example, using SIW, you can find out about the latest system updates, get information about system files or folders, as well as about drivers, running processes and services.

Moreover, in more detailed view than "Task Manager" allows you to do.

For commercial or corporate use, a license must be purchased.

conclusions

Number of programs for checking equipment and operating system large enough.

Almost constantly new applications are being created to help control computer parameters and hardware malfunctions.

But the programs presented in the list allow you to do this as efficiently as possible by installing only 2-3 applications, and not a whole dozen.

This saves time and does not download unnecessary files from the network, risking accidentally introducing a virus onto your computer.

In addition, if there is no access to the network, Windows has a number of utilities that will also allow you to find out some parameters.

The widespread use of the computer industry has not bypassed the automotive industry. And here computers came to the aid of man, gradually transforming regular cars into safe, high-comfort vehicles.

But you have to pay for everything, and such modernization of cars had to be paid with the simplicity of their design. Today, computer diagnostics of a car surprises no one, and occupies an equal position with mechanical check its knots!

Features of automotive diagnostic PC

The era when the car was mainly mechanical components has sunk into oblivion. Automotive industry constantly evolving, prioritizing the comfort and safety of the driver and passenger. To achieve these goals, electronic systems are being actively introduced into cars, designed to facilitate and improve their operation.

Unlike the "mechanical" predecessors, modern vehicles are equipped every day with all big amount electronics.

Failure of any of the systems can lead to the fact that a completely mechanically serviceable car will not even start.

In order to prevent or correct such situations, computer diagnostics of the car are used.

Computer diagnostics are actions aimed at identifying errors in car electronics in order to prevent and correct breakdowns associated with them. The source of information is the brain modern transport– electronic control unit (ECU). By connecting to it with the help of special equipment, you can find out whether the car is sick or not.

What is PC diagnostics for?

In order to put on high level the safety and comfort of the car, had to sacrifice the simplicity of its design. More and more tasks for setting up and functioning in it are performed by electronic circuits.

A modern car is crammed with all sorts of sensors that monitor the compliance of the specified parameters with the actual values.

Do-it-yourself devices for computer diagnostics

The flip side of the coin is the almost complete dependence of the vehicle owner on these electronic systems. Failure of a matchbox-sized sensor will result in turning the key in the ignition to no effect.

A visual inspection in search of a breakdown will not give a result, since outwardly everything will be in order. Only the electronic control unit can answer what is the cause of the breakdown.

Computer diagnostics of the ECU will help not only to carry out preventive maintenance of the car, but also to save its owner from the above situation. It is not pleasant to "stall" in the fields where there is not a soul, even if it happened on an expensive comfortable car.

Therefore, it is difficult to overestimate the importance of computer diagnostics for the owner of a modern vehicle.

Success Criteria

A few years ago, computer diagnostics for car owners was available mainly at car service stations.

This is explained by the fact that earlier the price of equipment for diagnostics was orders of magnitude higher. This led to the fact that it was profitable to purchase it only for stations Maintenance, where this service was put on stream.

However, prices have changed and many can now afford to buy equipment for monitoring errors in their car. What you need to diagnose a car, you can learn from this video.

Today, do-it-yourself computer diagnostics is an operation available to many drivers. Someone will prefer a car service, and those who want to save their time and money will prefer to do it themselves. Then you will not have to pay for the correction of non-existent errors in the service station.

For those who want to carry out diagnostics on their own, there are two options for a set of equipment. Must have or portable car scanner, or PC with adapter and related software. The autoscanner is compact and mobile.

This is a small device with built-in software. Great for field diagnostics.

The second option requires any personal computer with minimal technical requirements. If you do diagnostics in the garage, then a stationary PC is also suitable. But best option- use a laptop, tablet, and possibly a smartphone.

An adapter is also required. This device is a microcircuit in a housing. It is connected between the computer and the diagnostic connector of the controller. The adapter coordinates the PC with the software and the controller.

The signals sent by the computer pass through the adapter, which is an intermediary, and enter the controller. From there, response signals are sent, which the program processes and displays the results on the device screen in the form of error codes (DTC).

This device is not universal for all brands of automotive manufacturers. There are various adapters and they must be selected for the required brand of car.

Of the most common adapters, the following should be noted:

  • Vasya is a diagnostician;
  • VAG-COM 409.1;
  • OPCOM

It should also be noted the importance of having information on decoding error codes. Since the information from the ECU (aka the controller) comes in the form of numbers, it is necessary to know which numerical value of the error corresponds to which malfunction. In this video, you will be shown how to carry out computer diagnostics with your own hands.

In the presence of the Internet, this issue is easily solved, since it is possible to find this information in free access.

Execution steps

The first step necessary for diagnosing a car's ECU is to install the necessary software on the computer that will be used.

The exchange of signals from the PC to the controller and vice versa occurs according to a specific protocol.

Everyone has it car manufacturer their exchange protocols. The most common type of protocol is ODB-II. After the software is installed, it is necessary to connect the equipment for diagnostics to the diagnostic connector.

The next step is to set up a communication channel between a portable computer and an onboard computer. When the settings are made and the connection is established, the scan starts. The software tests the actual parameters and compares them with the given ones.

The controller sends the results of data analysis to the computer. If there are deviations, they are displayed in the form of error codes (DTC).

Automotive diagnostics can occur when the engine is running at Idling, at a certain speed and, often, with the engine turned off. After the diagnosis is completed, when the results become known, conclusions can be drawn. If there are no errors, that's good.

If they are, it is necessary to determine the value of each of them.

Knowing what problems are present in the car, its owner can already calculate the time and money needed for repairs. There are breakdowns that you can fix yourself - for example, replacing the sensor, where you need to unfasten the connector and unscrew the nut.

If the malfunction is more serious and requires qualified intervention, then it is better to entrust this matter to an understanding person, so as not to be that stingy person who pays twice.

  • For a more complete and competent assessment of the results of diagnosis, it is necessary to be able not only to diagnose the computer, but also to have an understanding of how the node that is being analyzed is arranged and functions;
  • Finding a bug and fixing it are not the same thing. If the diagnostician does not fix errors, but advises you to buy a part for repair, you should not do this. It is better to find a diagnostician who will give a guarantee that he will fix the problem when replacing this part.

Thus, it is not so difficult to make a diagnosis yourself. It is more difficult to remove the errors that are. And in the absence of experience in this matter, it is better to pay someone who knows a lot about this!

Independent computer diagnostics is suitable for those who want to figure out the actual malfunctions of their car themselves, and not to console themselves with the hope that they will be lucky with a conscientious and honest specialist.
