Connecting the PTF directly to the VAZ 2114. Installing and connecting fog lights

11.10.2019

Fog lights or simply PTF are an important element of the lighting system for a car. Alas, not all manufacturers equip their machines with these devices. AvtoVAZ with its model 2114 is no exception. PTF for the fourteenth is available only for a surcharge and in the most expensive configuration.

Not everyone sees the point in buying the most complete version just to get PTF. An excellent solution is self-installation of foglights.

Installation methods

There are several options to equip your car with a fog lamp system. The choice depends on your personal preferences and capabilities.

Way

Peculiarities

Buying a bumper with built-in PTF

Such bumpers are bought in a tuning studio, where everything will be connected and connected to you. The downside of this option is the high cost.

Buying a bumper from a VAZ 2115 and installing it yourself

To do this, you will have to buy a bumper from an older model, where holes for fog lights are provided. It remains to find a suitable PTF kit and install them

Purchase of PTF and facing elements - glasses

Today, this method is in the greatest demand, because it allows you to do the installation yourself for little money.

The standard PTF kit includes several elements:

  • headlights;
  • light bulbs;
  • Switching relay;
  • Set of wires;
  • Wiring diagram;
  • Button to turn on / off the PTF.

When choosing a kit, pay attention to the fact that the headlights match the shape of the glasses, that is, the facing elements.

Today, for owners of the VAZ 2114 who want to install fog lights, it is recommended to choose rectangular kits from the Kirzhach company. It is used for factory installation of PTF on expensive versions of the model.

Xenon in PTF

Many car owners are thinking about installing xenon lamps in fog lights. Is it good? Not really.

The thing is that when xenon is installed in the PTF, focusing is disturbed. The principle of operation of xenon is somewhat different compared to conventional lamps such as Kirzhach.

Regular PTFs are designed for certain types of lamps, therefore they cannot cope with xenon. As a result, excessive reflection is observed in the reflector, the rays are refracted, the light is blurred. Where does this lead? To dazzle oncoming drivers.

The xenon option is not a practical and good solution. Therefore, we recommend that you refuse it.

Another option is a combination of xenon and yellow foglights. You will need H1 xenon bulbs, which are mounted in a bottle cap and only then placed in the headlight. So the light beam gets more even boundaries, does not blind oncoming traffic, better illuminates the roads in bad weather. Only after installing this combined lighting, be sure to make sure that your headlights really do not blind oncoming cars.

If you stubbornly continue to shine oncoming cars with high beams, try adjusting the light beam. If this does not help, it is better to refuse xenon.

Installation

The PTF installation process can be divided into three main stages:

  • Headlight installation;
  • Network connection;
  • Functionality check.

So now we will talk about each of the stages separately.

Headlight installation

We will consider the option of installing PTF on a standard bumper. Therefore, it does not provide holes for new optics. They will have to be done by hand.

To work, you will need a certain set of tools and materials:

  • File;
  • Drill and drills;
  • Electric jigsaw;
  • Roulette;
  • Marker.

Now directly about work.

  1. Remove the bumper first. Work is carried out only if it is disconnected from the seat.
  2. Remove all dirt from the bumper.
  3. Mark up for the installation of future fog optics.
  4. It is best to mount the headlights a little to the side of the lower air intake. Try to place the PTF strictly under the main optics of your car.
  5. For decorative glasses that have outer and inner halves, mark up. The outer half is decorative, while the inner half is designed to fix the outer part and headlights.
  6. The outer part of the glasses on the inside has a ledge. With this landing protrusion, the element must enter the hole made in the bumper.
  7. To determine the optimal size, measure the landing ledge. So you can make the appropriate markup on your bumper.
  8. With the help of an electric jigsaw, holes are cut to the desired size and location.
  9. File the cut points.
  10. The outer part of the glasses should eventually fit tightly into the hole.
  11. Fog lights are mounted in the holes obtained. For this purpose, special mounting bolts are provided in the kit.
  12. Fasten decorative glasses on top of the headlights. The bumper can then be returned to its place.

Connection

Together with the PTF, a device connection diagram must be attached. It is not complicated, because even a beginner will be able to understand all the nuances of connecting the components to each other.

You will need to embed the wiring from the foglights into the mounting block, which is located in the engine compartment to the right of the windshield. To do this, just unscrew the bolts from the block, lift it up and find the pads marked Sh7 and Sh8.

These pads are used to connect fog lights, although these lighting devices are not standardly installed at the factory. The wiring from the headlights and from the fog lamp relay, which is provided in the purchased PTF kit, is connected to these pads.

Your job is to make the right connection. These are performed according to the following scheme:

  • The outgoing wire from pin 87 is ground, so you need to connect it to the car body;
  • The output at number 85 goes to the block with the designation Ш7 and is connected to connector number 17;
  • Conclusions numbered 30 and 86 go to block Ш8. In this case, connect pin 30 to connector 8, and lead 86 to connector number 1;
  • Having installed the headlights, pull the positive wire through the engine compartment, as they are connected to the Ш8 block. But these wires must be inserted into the connectors numbered 2 and 3;
  • Now connect the block to the mounting block, and return the block to its place;
  • Select the area near the block where the fog lamp relay will be installed.

Button

Now you just have to connect the control system for your PTFs. Complete with foglights, a corresponding button is provided, which will stand on the panel in the seat provided by the manufacturer.

The manufacturer, that is, AvtoVAZ, provided for this. Therefore, under the panel you will find the control block. The panel is removed, the corresponding block is located and a button is connected to it. Everything, management is ready.

Examination

The last step is to check the performance of your PTFs.

To check the efficiency of the lighting devices, turn on the dimensions on your VAZ 2114, then press the fog lamps button. When the dimensions are turned off, even if the foglight button is pressed, they should still go out.

The importance of PTF is difficult to overestimate. They help to better see the road during fog, rain, snow. Moreover, fog lights are designed to improve the visibility of your car for oncoming and behind the going car. Therefore, we strongly recommend installing PTF not only in front, but also in the back.

If your profession is associated with frequent car trips, or you just love to travel, then you probably know that without good optics it is quite difficult to guarantee driving safety. At the moment, even the shortest trip should not be made without good fog equipment. Such optics are now installed on almost every car in the basic configuration.

However, there are cars in which you have to independently connect foglights through a relay. The scheme and installation steps for this optics are further in our article.

What are foglights for?

Before telling you about the features of mounting these elements, a few words about how important they are for a car. The main function is to supply light. The quality and range of illumination of the roadway depend on this characteristic. If the fog lights are well tuned, they are able to illuminate up to 10 meters of asphalt in front of them, which is quite enough for safe movement at a speed of 50-60 kilometers per hour. And it does not matter what weather you are driving in - with a cloudless sky or with thick fog - this optics always copes with its function. So how do you install it in a car?

Connecting foglights through a relay: diagram and instructions

First, prepare the necessary tools and materials. In the course of work, we will need a 15 amp fuse, several meters of wires, insulating tape, a power button, a block and a PTF relay. The wiring diagram for fog lights through a relay is shown in the photo below. We will be guided by it.

This is the same wiring diagram for the fog lamp relay. In principle, it does not present any difficulty, and it is very easy to deal with it.

Where to start installation?

First of all, you need to remove the central panel - 2 backlight lamps for the furnace regulator will be located here. They do not affect the operation of the PTF in any way, but we will need their wires. To feel for the two-pin connector, you should run your hand along the wire to the very end. It is especially important, since this is where the first contact on the relay will be established. Next, the wire is connected to the location of the oven backlight connector, and its second part goes to a separate PTF power button.

We connect contacts

How to connect fog lights through a relay next? In order for the system to have a twelve-volt network of dimensions and 85 contacts, it is necessary to run a wire to the relay. Next, we stretch the 87th contact under the pedals to the battery.

How to make the correct connection of foglights through includes 30, 85, 86 and 87 pins. We connect them, according to the figure. We also install a 15-amp fuse here. And the closer it is to the battery, the better. Next is the 86th contact. Everything is simple here - we connect it to the body.

About wires

Now you need to deal with the foglights themselves. As we know, there are only two wires coming from each headlight (“plus” and “minus”, respectively). We connect the latter with the body, that is, it will be our mass. Next, we raise it to the relay so that the wires are not visible, and connect it to the battery.

This completes the connection of the fog lights through the relay. The connection diagram, as we can see, is very simple, so even a novice motorist can handle this task.

Second installation option

It will be much easier for car owners who already have a place in the bumper for mounting fog lights. Then you don't need to buy fuses. All that is required is a pair of new foglights and up to 100 centimeters of wire (in reserve).

PTFs for foreign cars most often have two wires painted black and red. The latter is connected to the "plus", and the first - to the "minus". Although on some instances (as, for example, on foglights for the Asian-made Daewoo Nexia), it is unimportant which color to connect to. Red may well perform the function of "plus" and "minus". By the way, if you didn’t find wires for connecting optics in the bumper, it doesn’t matter - you can try connecting them directly to the battery. Moreover, it is not necessary to pull the "plus" and "minus" from each lamp separately. The installation order can be as follows - two wires (as we have already said, black and red) are installed to the battery terminals (more precisely, under them), which go first to the left headlight on the driver's side, and then to the right one. If the wires are short, we take longer ones, we clean their contacts at the ends and connect them. You will have to stock up on electrical tape for this. The color of the long wire that will be connected to the PTF and the battery is not critical. The main thing is that you do not get confused in polarity. You should also be vigilant and disconnect the battery before installation. Otherwise, the slightest contact of the wire with the body may cause a short circuit.

Such a PTF installation algorithm is suitable not only for foreign cars, but also for all domestic cars on which the manufacturer provides a place for attaching optics. For example, on VAZ 2110 and 2114 cars, connecting foglights in this way takes no more than 20-40 minutes of time (and this despite the fact that the motorist has no experience in installing such equipment on a vehicle).

What requirements must the PTF meet?

Finally, we note what rules modern fog lights should meet:

Conclusion

As you can see, connecting foglights to the VAZ 2110 and many other domestic cars is a fairly easy task that every motorist can handle. The fog lamp is your reliable assistant, which allows you to distinguish objects on the roadway in time and react to the traffic situation with a large margin of time.

Some configurations of the VAZ 2114 car, even from the factory, are equipped with such a function as: fog lights. And on the rest, there are special plugs so that you can install such headlights yourself.

Their main and, perhaps, the only function is to increase the visibility of the roadway during fog. This effect is achieved due to the special location of the fog lights. They are a level lower than the main optics, and illuminate the road, about 40 - 50 percent more.

Preparing for installation

If your VAZ 2114 did not have fog lights provided by the factory, then you can install them yourself. First, you need to buy all the necessary parts and tools, namely:

  • Fog lights, along with special wires;
  • The framework in which the PTF will be installed;
  • Mounting brackets;
  • Light bulbs.

Before you start connecting this device, you need to prepare the holes in the bumper. On some models, plugs are installed that you just need to remove and replace with headlights. But with some samples of the VAZ 2114, the situation is a little more complicated - you need to make holes for the headlights yourself.

In order to do this work, you will need a stencil. To get it, circle the frames for mounting the headlights on paper, and cut it out. Then, attach the stencil to the place where the fog light will be located. Circle the stencil, leaving a clear outline. Next, using a drill, drill a lot of holes along the contour, close to each other, so that the middle of the plastic falls out and a hole is formed. The edges of this hole, it is desirable to process with sandpaper.

Connection process

Connecting fog lights to the VAZ 2114 should be carried out strictly as shown in the diagram. This process originates from the interior of the car. On the panel of any VAZ 2114, regardless of the configuration, there is a special connector for the fog light button.

After the button is installed, the wiring diagram goes to the engine compartment, to the fog lamp relay. Such an element is sold in a PTF connection kit. Its location should be in close proximity to the mounting block. This is because the block contains two terminal blocks that will need to be connected to the relay.

Further, when all the elements are connected, the relay should be connected to the fuse box, according to the order indicated by the diagram. Now, take the positive wire, and run it along the engine compartment, connecting the button contacts to the relay. Also, connect the PTF to this "plus". The negative wire, in turn, must be connected at one end to the headlight, and at the other end to the fastening nut, for grounding.

Now that the connection is complete, connect the battery and try to turn on the PTF. If everything works, then the work can be considered completed, and if not, then you should review the connection scheme again. It is possible that you connected the wires incorrectly, or, when installing parts, damaged the wiring.

Connecting the PTF to the VAZ 2114 should not be done on your own, without the appropriate skills, as you can provoke a short circuit and ruin some electrical equipment. If the installation of this device is simply necessary, then it is better to contact a specialist for help in connecting it.

Good road illumination is very important for accident-free driving. Fog lights provide better visibility in bad weather. In addition, at night they can be used for a better view as an addition to the high beam. So sooner or later the question arises, which PTFs are better for the VAZ 2114?

The first series of VAZ 2114 did not have fog lights. In the latest modifications, there are cars that have PTF included in the kit, while the rest have bumper plugs for installation.

There are drivers who are satisfied with the regular VAZ version of the PTF. But most search and compare in order to choose the most suitable model for their car.

Types of fog lights

Fog lights come in 2 types:

  • regular;
  • universal.

The standard headlights are produced for a specific car model with the same mounts and housing as the original.

Universal headlights have mounts that allow you to install them on any car at the points of the plugs on the bumper, behind the grille or hang the headlights on the bumper.

Depending on the type of lamps, headlights are divided into:

  • halogen;
  • xenon;
  • LED.

Halogen lamps are cheaper than other options. But they burn out more often, and they need to be changed regularly.

Xenon headlights illuminate the road better than halogen PTFs and last longer. However, harsh light blinds oncoming drivers, and you can get a fine for excessive brightness of the lamps.

LED headlights are more economical and do not put as much strain on the battery as the previous two types of headlights. They are durable and illuminate the road well. If installed or ventilated incorrectly, LED headlights overheat and fail.

PTF is produced in plastic, aluminum and magnesium cases. Aluminum and magnesium options are considered more durable and reliable.

Fog lights are equipped with plastic or glass light diffusers. Plastic lenses become cloudy over time and transmit light worse, which affects the visibility of the road and driving safety. If headlights with glass lenses are selected, make sure that they can be replaced if necessary.

If foglights are not used, they can be closed with plastic plugs for better safety.

Criterias of choice

To decide which foglights to put on the VAZ 2114, you need to know the correct selection criteria.

  1. Rugged housing. In the conditions of Russian roads, the headlight housing must be made of a material resistant to damage and temperature extremes. It is better that plugs are provided in the design.
  2. Reliable fastenings and the presence of wires, relays and fasteners in the kit.
  3. Wide light spot, uniform light distribution and minimal scattering and refraction losses.
  4. Adjustment and adjustment of the light spot vertically and horizontally.
  5. No blinding of oncoming drivers.
  6. Easy replacement of a burnt out lamp. When buying, pay attention to the instructions for replacing the lamp. The easier and faster it can be changed, the less time will have to be spent if the lamp burns out at the most inopportune moment. Ideally, after replacing the lamp, no further adjustment is required.
  7. Profitability. When choosing headlights, try to avoid unnecessary stress on the wiring and generator. In most cases, lamps up to 55 watts will suffice.
  8. Thick durable lenses.
  9. Good aerodynamic performance.
  10. Compliance with the design of the machine.

The lineup

Having decided on the criteria, you can choose fog lights for the VAZ 2114, which are better and better.

Of the existing PTFs, the following models are most often installed on the VAZ 2114:

  • Avtosvet (Kirzhach);
  • Bosch;
  • Hella;
  • Chinese PTF.

For 2114, they put both standard headlights from the latest modifications of Samara, and headlights from Niva, Chevrolet Niva, Lada Priora and other models.

Avtosvet (Kirzhach) headlights are considered optimal in terms of quality and cost, but when buying, they need to be checked so that the headlights are not fake.

If Bosch headlights are installed, they must be additionally sealed in the bolt area under the glass, otherwise water may get under the headlights.

Hella headlights are considered to have the best performance, but they are expensive.

Chinese headlights are cheaper than all analogues. They are mainly used as a replacement for low beam to indicate navigation lights during daylight hours.

There is nothing difficult in mounting headlights on the body. They are installed in standard holes from which the headlights of the previous set or plugs are removed. If holes are not provided, they can be cut out in a plastic bumper with a knife or drilled. It's even easier to attach the headlights to the gap next to the number plate or the radiator.

In order not to drill holes in the bumper, you can put a bumper from 2115 with ready-made holes for PTF.

Severe weather conditions (rain, snow, fog) greatly impair visibility, thereby reducing traffic safety. An important role in reducing the danger when driving in conditions of poor visibility is played by a high-quality head lighting system, especially fog lights (PTF). But the VAZ 2114 was not initially equipped with “foglights”, so the owners have to install them on their own or at the service station.

Why do we need PTF on the VAZ 2114

Fog rarely spreads to the ground, so a small layer of transparent air remains between it and the earth's surface. Fog lamps form a vertically narrow (but wide horizontally) beam of light that is directed parallel to the road surface. Thus, the PTF VAZ 2114 illuminates the fog from below and the road is well lit. The wide beam of light improves the visibility of the road shoulder and side markings, which helps you stay within the roadway.
It is a common misconception that effective PTFs can only be with yellow steles. In reality, both yellow and white headlights illuminate the road equally well. These colors are distinguished by the maximum light energy in the spectrum, in contrast to red, green or other light radiation.
It should be remembered that even the best “foglights” are not a panacea. In heavy fog, with correctly adjusted PTF, visibility does not exceed 10 meters, but this is quite enough, given the speed of movement.
In some cases, red rear PTFs are installed on cars, which improve the visibility of the car during fog.

How to choose PTF

When choosing fog lights, you should pay attention to two parameters:

  • Color. PTF glasses should be either yellow or milky. Rays of this spectrum are most effective in a foggy environment. Moreover, traffic rules allow the installation of PTFs only in such colors, therefore, by installing blue or other “foglights”, you can get an administrative fine for violating the rules.

Tip: with PTF with yellow glasses, it is optimal to use white incandescent lamps. And, accordingly, yellow incandescent lamps are suitable for “foglights” with milky-colored glasses.

  • Marking. The presence of the letter “E” on the headlight (possibly with numbers) indicates the certification of headlights in the EU. This should be followed by a Latin letter denoting the name and type of light fixture. For PTF, this should be the letter “B”.
    What is included in the PTF kit

The standard kit for installing fog lights includes:

  • headlights with bulbs;
  • set of wires;
  • electromagnetic relay;
  • PTF power button;
  • PTF VAZ 2114 connection diagram.

Installing PTF on a VAZ 2114

There are three ways to put PTF on a car:

  • Buy a new bumper with foglights installed. This is the simplest but most expensive solution. Such a bumper can be purchased at a tuning studio, where it will be installed and connected to the PTF VAZ 2114.
  • Buy a VAZ 2115 bumper, suitable “foglights” and install and connect the parts yourself.
  • Buy suitable PTF with lining, embed them yourself into a standard bumper and connect to the on-board network.

To replace or modify the standard VAZ 2114 bumper, it must be dismantled from the car. The holes in the bumper should be marked with a stencil, and then cut with a jigsaw or drilled.
It is necessary to insert and fix the headlight trim (glasses) into the finished holes. Mounting must be done as reliably as possible, since poorly fixed “foglights” will vibrate when moving, which will shorten their service life.
When the headlights are fixed in the bumper, and it is installed in a regular place, it remains to connect the PTF VAZ 2114.

How to connect PTF VAZ 2114

The scheme of the PTF VAZ 2114 does not change, regardless of which method of installing the headlights was chosen. The installation site of the PTF switch is closed with a plug on the dashboard, which must be pulled out and the button included in the kit installed in its place. Before starting work, disconnect the “minus” terminal from the battery. The procedure for connecting the PTF to the car wiring is as follows:

  • remove the decorative grille located to the left of the installation location of the “foglight” switch on the dashboard;
  • unscrew and remove the speaker;
  • insert wires with connection blocks intended for the indicator of switching on and powering the PTF;
  • pull out the plug and install the button to turn on the PTF;
  • put the wire blocks on the button;
  • install the speaker and the grille in regular places;
  • unscrew and set aside the fuse box located under the hood;
  • thread the wires from the relay and “foglights” to the fuse box;
  • pull out the connectors Ш7 and Ш8, intended for connecting the PTF, from the block;
  • connect output 86 to ground, and 85 - to connector 17 of block Ш7;
  • connect conclusions 87 and 30 to connectors 1 and 8 of block Ш8;
  • connect the positive wires from the headlights to connectors 2 and 3 of the Ш8 block;
  • insert the connectors into the fuse box with the free side inside the latter;
  • fix the fuse block;
  • install the PTF VAZ 2114 relay near the block.

It remains to connect the “minus” of the battery and check the operability of the installed “foglights”.

Checking the operation of the PTF VAZ 2114

To make sure that the fog lights are working, you need to turn on the side lights and press the PTF power button. Lamps in the "fog" should light up. When the “dimensions” are turned off, the PTF lamps should turn off regardless of whether the power button was pressed.
Now you know how to connect the PTF to the VAZ 2114 and you can do the work yourself.
