Solid, bright, roomy crossover with off-road potential Chevrolet Captiva has charmed everyone who loves thoroughness in everything. But this one also has some disadvantages that you need to pay attention to when buying a used car. family car. Besides weak points V this car There are also disadvantages that every future owner needs to know about.

Weaknesses of the 1st generation Chevrolet Captiva

  • steering rack;
  • timing mechanism drive;
  • stabilizer's pole;
  • oil pressure sensor;
  • brake pads;
  • catalyst.

Details about weak points and their identification...

Steering rack

1. You can find out about the wear of the steering rack during a test drive or by doing diagnostics. It is necessary to pay attention to the appearance strong vibration steering wheel, extraneous noise in the form of grinding, knocking when driving on uneven roads. Turning the steering wheel in any direction will be difficult. This will also cause extraneous sounds. A leak from the steering rack may also be a sign of a malfunction. It’s worth looking into the reservoir; if the power steering fluid foams a lot, then this is also a sign of a breakdown.

Timing mechanism drive

2. On a Chevrolet Captiva with a 2.4 liter engine, the timing mechanism is driven by a belt. Its wear can result not only in a break, but also bent valves. The degree of wear can sometimes be determined visually. With a lot of wear, it begins to “shag”. But the first and main signs are with inside belt and they are not always visible.

For cars with a 3.2 l engine – chain drive Timing belt Pulling it out is a common problem with these machines. At the same time, engine thrust decreases, and the on-board computer generates errors.

Chassis

3. The condition of the stabilizer struts largely depends on driving style. Problems with them can be identified by driving the car on an uneven road. Malfunctions of the struts will be indicated by knocking, increased roll and skidding of the car when cornering, as well as swaying when braking. Experienced drivers They can also determine if they are broken by rocking the car from each corner. A sign of a malfunction will be a sharp lowering.

4. Most often, the front brake pads wear out on Chevrolet Captiva. This usually happens after driving about 35 thousand kilometers. The rear pads will last almost twice as long. You can find out about their wear at test drive. Every time you brake, especially when high speeds, a metallic screeching and grinding noise will be heard. This sound is caused by a wear sensor built into the brake pads.

5. Oil pressure sensor - another one vulnerable spot Captiva. If it malfunctions, the oil pressure indicator light will light up. It may light up when there is over-gassing or in other cases of pressure changes. However, this is not the only reason when this indication comes on. It signals a failure of the oil pump, insufficient oil level, faulty wiring of this important detail engine, as well as about problems with the engine itself. Therefore, the best solution when the light is on is to have it diagnosed at a service station.

6. The catalyst is also the weak point of this model. It is available on both petrol and diesel engines. The most obvious sign of a problem with it will be a slow acceleration, then the engine starts running as usual again. But it is not always possible to identify this in one short trip, so it is necessary to undergo diagnostics at a service center.

In addition to the above problems, Captiva must be carefully checked when purchasing general state car. Go for a drive and listen for noises, knocks, squeaks, whistles and other strange sounds in the area of the engine compartment, chassis and suspension.

The main disadvantages of the Chevrolet Captiva 2006 - 2011 release

  1. “Crickets” in the cabin in winter;
  2. Low front bumper skirt;
  3. The plastic in the interior is easily scratched;
  4. Due to the wide A-pillars, visibility is poor;
  5. Rigid suspension;
  6. Fuel consumption is higher than stated;
  7. Weak light at night (no xenon);
  8. Pedal difference (brake pedal higher than gas pedal);
  9. Weak engine.

Conclusion.
This is a fairly reliable crossover and driving it will be a real pleasure. With careful Chevrolet operation Captiva does not let its owners down with breakdowns. Therefore, when buying a used car, the ideal way to check is to go through full diagnostics in a car service.

P.S.: Dear future and current car owners, if sore spots are detected and frequent breakdowns your car, please let us know in the comments.

    Also, the weak point of 2.4 engines is the flow of oil into the spark plug wells. Replacing the valve cover gasket solves the problem, but not for long. Reason: plastic valve lid. Apparently it does over time. Perhaps replacing it with aluminum will solve the problem. When buying a used Captiva, you should look into the spark plug wells. Just remove the caps of the high-voltage wires from the spark plugs and if there is a problem, they will be in the oil.

    Captiva 2014 goal mileage is almost 60 thousand. I have never changed the stabilizer struts so it’s not the weakest link. I was surprised by the low mileage of the front hubs of 30-50 km and replaced both front hubs. This has never happened to one of my cars. Everyone ran almost 100-110 thousand. I also changed the solenoid exhaust valve.

    Another very weak point of the Captiva is the hoses for supplying washer fluid to the rear window. During periods of minus, they constantly pop out.

  4. Sergey

    Captiva 2.4 petrol 2012 mileage 148,200, replacement of pads 65,000, replacement of front right pillar 105,000, replacement of left hub 148,000 due to no fault of wear, replacement of rear outer silent blocks 148,000, replacement of everything. The problem is that water accumulates in the air in winter due to temperature changes, you have to remove it and check it (car blankets are strictly prohibited), the check light has been on for 3 years, the fault is with the fuel pump, but it works fine, the error is not cleared, for 4 years the consumption was up to 10 city-highway , now 11 liters. The rear window washer hose also popped out once. There are no more problems, I'm happy with the car.

    And how expensive this car is... I also like it very much. But some say it is expensive to maintain. And my salary is about $300

    Chevrolet Captiva 2.2 diesel. The sign on the display indicates that the vehicle needs servicing. The revolutions rose to 1600, the diagnostics scolded 4 injectors.

    Captiva 2.4. I change the thermostat every three years in addition to everything stated above. The radiator turned out to be weak and leaked this year.

    I bought a 2013 Captiva last year, 2017. The mileage is now 93 t.km. I'm happy with the car. Consumption is 12-12.4l, it seems a bit much, but for 2.4l, 167hp, it’s probably normal. Climate-auto — with glitches periodically, in manual mode it’s normal. The engine and automatic transmission operate smoothly with good traction. The suspension is a bit harsh on rough roads outside the city, but in the city it is very comfortable. Overall I'm happy with the car.

    Koptiva, seven months old, 2008 I bought the second one in 2009. I changed the mouth guard to a mouth guard in the salon two months later. The dealer's fault during the installation of additional equipment was proven. I use it until today. Satisfied. Periodically requires maintenance and repair like any mechanism. Mileage over 200,000 km. I have changed the front stabilizer struts several times. Rear ones only after 200,000 km. Front and rear stabilizer bushings were replaced after 200 thousand mileage. I replaced the brake discs, a couple of parking sensors, and the gasket under the valve covers twice. Oil seals leaked: crankshaft, camshaft. I'm changing it. I changed the muffler corrugation twice. There was a broken pin on the muffler pants. Unscrewed it and replaced it along with the gasket. The hub began to hum at 200,000 km. - replacement. During the winter, the wipers on the windshield froze—the mechanism needs to be replaced. Replacing the air conditioner switching unit. Replacing the crosspiece on the cardan, changed the oil seal twice rear axle. Generator - repair. Brushes and bearings are worn out. I changed the front shock absorbers - a scam at the service. They were a little dusty. I think we could go for a long time. The front and rear sales blocks have been changed several times.

    Chevrolet Captiva 2014 2.4 mileage 75 thousand. The movement of the front windshield blades malfunctioned twice. The first time they fell into place. A year later, the second time there was a malfunction. They stop wherever they want. At the service center they said that their fastening mechanism had become loose and the sprockets were slipping. As a result, there is some wear on the sprockets. They tightened the mechanism. They said if it comes loose again, it needs to be replaced

Chevrolet Captiva was first presented in 2004 at the Paris Motor Show. Its production began in 2006. Mid-size crossover developed by South Korean branch General Motors. In-factory designation of the S-100 model. In 2011, an updated version of the Captiva C-140 was presented.

Engines

The Chevrolet Captiva was supplied to the Russian market with two gasoline engines - a 4-cylinder 2.4 liter (136 hp) and a V6 3.2 liter (230 hp). In general, both engines are quite reliable.

The younger 2.4 liter with a mileage of more than 60 - 90 thousand km often requires replacing the thermostat. This will be indicated by the arrow of the temperature indicator, located below the usual position. A new original thermostat costs about 2,000 rubles, an analogue costs about 1,200 rubles. After 100 thousand km, the rear crankshaft oil seals begin to “snotty”.

Timing mechanism drive on this engine belt The first replacement is prescribed by regulations at 120 thousand km, but many services recommend doing this at 90 thousand km, with subsequent replacement every 60 thousand km. Several owners encountered trouble - a broken belt and bent valves.

The 3.2 liter engine has a timing chain drive. But you shouldn’t rely on its eternity. Chain stretching with a mileage of more than 80 - 100 thousand km is a common phenomenon. At the same time, there are Captives that have driven 140 - 160 thousand km without problems with the chain. The first signs of the need to replace the chain are errors in on-board computer and reduction in engine thrust. At the same time, the motor continues to operate stably, without extraneous noise. There is no point in delaying the replacement of the chain - with further operation of the engines, the chain jumped by 1-2 teeth. More often than not, after this it is possible to get by with little bloodshed, and the engine simply stops starting. During the post-warranty period, official dealers ask for work including spare parts from 40 to 60 thousand rubles. In ordinary services, you will have to pay about 10 thousand rubles for the work, and components will require about 8 thousand rubles. The oil pressure sensor often requires replacement. The original one will cost 4 thousand rubles, the analogue will cost about 1 thousand rubles.

Oil leaking from under the valve covers or oil in candle wells– a common occurrence for a 2.4 liter engine with a mileage of more than 30 – 60 thousand km. On a 3.2 engine this happens less often.

Transmission

There are no complaints about the reliability of the Chevrolet Captiva manual transmission. By and large, the “automatic” also does not cause any complaints. But with a mileage of more than 100 thousand km, several owners encountered jerking after the box warmed up. In all cases, the intervention of specialists and repair of the “machine” were required.

Leaking drive seals are a fairly common occurrence on Captiva with both types of transmissions. On cars produced in 2007–2008 with an automatic transmission, there is a design defect in the internal oil seal of the right transfer case drive. Repairs will require about 2.5 - 5 thousand rubles.

With a mileage of more than 60 - 80 thousand km, especially after a long period of overcoming “off-road” conditions, it often turns suspension bearing cardan in rubber base. This will be indicated by the vibration that appears at the initial moment of movement after stopping. Replacement faulty node It is produced assembled with a cardan, the cost of which is about 35-40 thousand rubles, for a used one - about 20 thousand rubles. Many people replace the suspension directly, choosing an analogue from other cars, for example the BMW X5 or Sobol.

The rear gearbox seal often begins to leak. Original oil seals will cost 5-6 thousand rubles per pair; replacing them will cost 2 thousand rubles. Some Chevrolet owners Captiva manages to pick up an analogue from Toyota for 300 - 500 rubles apiece.

Chassis

Racks front stabilizer They start knocking after 30 - 40 thousand km. The original ones cost about 800 - 900 rubles, analogues are half the price - 300 - 400 rubles. Front stabilizer bushings last longer - 80 - 100 thousand km. With a mileage of more than 60 - 100 thousand km, the front ones may have to be replaced wheel bearings(2.5 - 4 thousand rubles), which come complete with the hub. By this time, the front shock absorbers may begin to tap and “sweat”. The silent blocks of the levers are surrendered after 100 - 120 thousand km.

The steering rack of a Chevrolet Captiva often begins to knock after a mileage of more than 40 - 60 thousand km. By this time, a knock may appear in the steering shaft driveshaft. Leaks often occur at the connection points of the power steering system tubes. In cold weather, there are often cases of failure of the power steering return hose, which can lead to failure of the power steering pump (6-7 thousand rubles).

ABS sensors, especially rear ones, often require replacement after 80 - 100 thousand km. New sensors official dealers They offer it for 4,500 rubles; in an auto parts store, the original will be available for 3,000 rubles, but you can also find an analogue for 800 rubles. Front brake pads last more than 30-50 thousand km (650 rubles per set). Rear brake pads last more than 80 thousand km. Front brake discs last more than 100 - 120 thousand km (2-3 thousand rubles per disc). Rear brake discs last even longer (1.5-2 thousand rubles).

Other problems and malfunctions

The weak link of the Chevrolet Captiva body hardware is the rear trunk door, which can “bloom” after two to three years of operation. Over time, the chrome trim on the back door. The emblem on the radiator grill also often peels off.

Problems may also arise with the rear window washer motor. In addition, the washer fluid supply hose to the tailgate glass in the rear of the Chevrolet Captiva often becomes disconnected. The cause of windshield wiper blades getting stuck in the middle of the windshield is a faulty motor microswitch. Dealers offer new motor chik for 8,000 rubles, but you can revive it by replacing the faulty microswitch (300 rubles).

Electrical problems in the Chevrolet Captiva most often arise due to poor contacts in the connectors or an open circuit. So loss of engine thrust and fire hazard warning lights may occur due to loose contacts on the engine control unit.

The airbag malfunction indicator lights up due to oxidation of the connector contacts under the plastic trim of the front and rear left threshold. A simple procedure of juggling the connector under the front passenger seat often helps.

If incorrect readings appear on the fuel level indicator, it is enough to check the connector under the power steering reservoir that goes to the fuse box. Sometimes the connector on the ECM (engine controller) is the culprit.

Over time, backrest play may appear on electric seats. In addition, the armrest between the front seats begins to creak.

Condensation can accumulate in the space between the roof and the headliner and flow into the lampshades or into the area of the ceiling clips near the trunk door.

If you use a washer with frozen liquid, the fuse in the block will certainly blow out - under the left foot of the front passenger.

Problems can also arise with the clock in the cabin, which begins to go out or become confused. “Officials” replace faulty watches with new ones. When the warranty expires, specialists engaged in electrical repairs will be able to repair the watch for 500 rubles.

The reason for the sudden discharge of the battery is the slowly “dying” diode bridge on the generator. New officials They offer it for 4-5 thousand rubles; you can buy an analogue on the side for 2.5 thousand rubles.

Conclusion

As you can see, the Chevrolet Captiva practically does not cause serious problems. Basically, all the troubles are just “childhood sores”, which are not difficult to get rid of.

The Chevrolet Captiva is an urban SUV with the makings of an SUV. Solid appearance, all-wheel drive, seven-seater seating - this car has many advantages. Its production began in 2006, and appeared in 2012. restyled version. Its origin is Korean, but the quality and style are American, which provides it with a stable demand for Russian market, where large SUVs are traditionally prized.

Test drive Chevrolet Captiva

The best way to check if a car is right for you is to drive it. All official Chevrolet dealers offer a test drive, which will allow the future owner to decide on a purchase. The target audience Chevrolet Captiva is primarily for men. Its whole brutal appearance suggests that this is a serious car. Strict contours of the body, nothing superfluous in the interior decoration, a minimum of details.

At the same time, Captiva is very functional. But, as they say, everything is to the point. Volume trunk with an additional compartment under the floor, allows you to load even a small elephant. A large glove box with a secret compartment holds a set of wrenches and a bunch of similar “small things”. The desire for minimalism in the exterior of this car extends to the steering wheel. Of course it’s big, like a trolleybus, but why is it so thin? The grip is awkward, but this can be compensated for with a foam-lined case.

You can read about the features of Chevrolet crossovers

Has rich traditions. Find out what changes it has undergone from our material.

How does this city SUV drive? You have to get used to its dynamics; they are ambiguous. The first gear in a manual transmission is very short and slurred. But, if you need to rock a car that has sat on its belly, it is good. The automatic transmission is rather weak up to 2000 rpm and does not pull. But after 2000, Captiva suddenly comes to life, and then the real drive begins. In general, in this car you either fly or crawl.

The jeep is resistant to rutting, despite its relatively narrow cross-section. The post-restyling version does not have the effect of longitudinal rocking. New chassis settings allow for sharper cornering. The suspension is energy-intensive and perfectly absorbs all the bumps and unevenness of the road. The driver and passengers feel comfortable. The car does not have the “pendulum” effect that everyone is prone to large SUVs, when maneuvering with sudden stops, here it is reduced to zero, through special settings of the suspension arms.

About off-road qualities Captives argue a lot. The jeep that claims to good maneuverability, they are like honey from the cartoon about Winnie the Pooh - either they exist or they don’t. Chevrolet Captiva has them. But, in many respects they depend on the power and torque of the engine. Chevrolet, of course, is not a Hummer, but it rushes well. According to the owners, parking on a snowdrift is not a problem, nor is driving up a steep mountain through mud.

Captiva is not very stable. The ratio of the longitudinal and transverse distance between the wheels, plus the high ground clearance, does not allow it to cling to the road with a stranglehold. It is too narrow for an aggressive driving style. The steering wheel is sometimes not very informative, and this does not allow you to completely relax while driving.

But you can get used to this behavior of Captiva, after all, but still she is all-wheel drive SUV, although light class, she is supposed to be somewhat stern and thoughtful.

Technical characteristics of the Chevrolet Captiva

This car is supplied to Russia with three types of engines. The most budget-friendly is 2.4 liters with 136 horses under the hood. It will not provide crazy dynamics, but it is quite reliable and traction. There will be a small tax a nice bonus to the owner of a Captiva with this engine modification.

Gasoline consumption for a car with such a unit, according to General Motors engineers, is eight liters on the highway, 10-12 at mixed cycle in the city. In reality, according to reviews from owners, it turns out more. City cycle 14-16 liters, highway 11.5 l/100 km. Gas engine 3 liters This version of the engine appeared in updated version, after restyling, and replaced the V6 3.2 liter. It became more powerful, the number of horses was increased to 249. At the same time, the 3-liter engine became more economical than its predecessor.

Acceleration to the coveted hundred is now 8.6 seconds, which improves dynamic performance by 0.2 seconds. The declared fuel consumption is 14.3 l/100 km – urban cycle, and 8.3 l/100 km – on the highway. Top speed is limited to 198 km/h.

Another serious unit is V6 3.2 l/230hp. It is available only in the pre-restyling version. This is the optimal engine for a car weighing 1770 kilograms. With this ratio of weight and torque, the car accelerates to hundreds in 8.8 seconds. Quite a decent figure for an SUV, which allows you to move comfortably through city traffic jams. The 3.2 petrol engine consumes 18 -20 liters in the city. Its maximum speed is 198 km/h.

Diesel engine 2.2 Chevrolet Captiva with diesel engine 184 hp under the hood Acceleration to hundreds – 9.6 seconds. The maximum speed it can reach is 191 km/h.

This unit has a good appetite, according to the owners, in the city it consumes 17-18 liters, on the highway 14, against the manufacturer’s declared 14.3 and 8.3 liters per hundred, respectively.

The high fuel consumption that many Captiva owners complain about is a sensitive drawback. But it can be corrected by switching the car to gas. Those who buy Captiva seriously and for a long time solve the problem high flow rate fuel using an LPG installation.

Transmission

Chevrolet Captiva comes with both automatic and manual transmission transmission The 6-speed manual transmission provides responsiveness and a smooth ride, both on city asphalt and off-road. Automatic box It is better to take it with a 3.2 or 3 liter engine. An automatic with a 2.4 engine is a bit dull. Its dynamics are sufficient for driving around the city, but sometimes, when intensive maneuvering is necessary, it irritates with its slowness.

Chevrolet Captiva salon (+photo)

The interior of the Chevrolet Captiva is spacious. Even a very tall driver can sit comfortably behind the wheel, and the ceiling will not put pressure on his crown, thanks to the large windshield. Passengers sitting in the rear do not rest their knees on the backs of the front seats. The same passengers in the second row will not have to pretend to be professional divers when sitting in the cabin.

The large door opening allows you to get into the car without making complex movements. For ease of use of the cabin space, various seat transformation functions are provided. The 60/40 folding rear row allows you to load both a wardrobe and a bicycle into the car. Heated front seats and lumbar support for the driver's seat (not available in all trim levels) will ensure driving comfort. And in seven-seater versions, the rear row of seats can also be removed or folded in a 50/50 ratio.

Captiva is very high quality finish salon Our fellow citizens love to criticize Americans for cheap plastic. Like, if you knock on it, it rattles, if you hit it, it hurts. It is not clear, of course, why many car owners experiment with such trivial materials as interior trim... But their finest hour has come! The plastic of the Chevrolet Captiva is very soft, looks beautiful and aesthetically pleasing, does not rattle or grind on bumps. The seat materials meet high quality standards. Fabric interior(in cheaper versions) does not fade, does not fade, and is easy to dry clean. Leather and eco-leather are used for seat upholstery in more expensive trim levels. They do not stretch and do not fray.

The only negative is the lack of perforation; in hot weather, sitting in such chairs is not very comfortable. The interior of budget versions is designed for five people, but three healthy adult men in the back seat will be cramped. It is rather intended for children. But here, too, a problem arises - it’s also difficult to put three car seats in a row there, but rather a pair of car seats and a booster. The seven-seat version will cost more, both used and new. It is less common. You will have to wait when ordering a new car, and search when buying a used one.

Chevrolet Captiva configurations and prices

Everyone chooses a car for themselves. Based on this principle, General Motors engineers have produced many different Chevrolet trim levels Captiva. L.S.

The simplest configuration - LS, already includes the basic elements of comfort, without which it is impossible to imagine modern car. The safety and stability of the car on the road is ensured by ABS and traction control system, as well as ESP, equipped with a subsystem (TSA), which stabilizes the trailer when skidding. Side, front and even ceiling airbags provided the Captiva with a high score in crash tests. For the comfort of the driver and front passengers, there are heated seats. Air conditioning, CD player, 6 speakers with MP3 player support are also included in this package. Alloy 17-inch wheel disks are also supplied in the database.

The LT package is completely identical to the LS, and is complemented by cruise control, steering column adjustment, rain sensor, fog lights, and interior mirror rear view with electrochromic coating. The interior in this version is combined, made of fabric with leather elements. The steering wheel and the “skirt” of the gear lever are also covered in leather. LT Plus The Chevrolet Captiva's configurations are built on the matryoshka principle - each next one repeats the previous one, but a little more. The LT Plus adds larger wheels than the LS, a sunroof, and power-adjustable driver's seats. The interior itself is upholstered in black leather. The rear view mirrors are electrically adjustable and heated.

And, finally, the top-end trim level - LTZ. It included all the best from the previous ones, and added such pleasant little things as roof rails and tinted side windows. The rims grew again by one inch, and the number of speakers increased to 8.

Chevrolet Captiva options

Options The Chevrolet Captiva has a lot of useful and pleasant options. It’s worth talking in more detail about the most popular ones. The towbar is available in any configuration, which allows you to use the Captiva as a tractor and transport boats, motorhomes and other trailers. Pneumatic shock absorbers prevent the car from sagging even when the trunk is overloaded. They stand, accordingly, only in the back. Equipped with vehicle level sensors.

The front shock absorbers are simple, not pneumatic, with level sensors and adjustable stiffness. Repair suspension in Chevrolet - expensive pleasure. But it’s not so easy to break it, despite stories about the unreliability of pneumatics. A careful owner will not have any problems with it. And those who like to drive off-road should buy a Niva or UAZ, because the Captiva is more of a city SUV. Hand brake decorated unusually for those who have not driven an American before. It's just a button on dashboard. The audio and cruise control controls are on the steering wheel, like most Chevrolet SUVs.

The opening glass of the rear door allows you to throw any not too large object, such as a tool box, into the trunk without opening the main door. This is true if the luggage compartment is already heavily loaded. The interior has a spacious compartment for small items, which can be used to cool drinks. A nice feature that many owners never find out about until after using the car until the new owner calls and asks how this thing turns on. In general, read technical manual to the car is a very rewarding task. Thanks to this, you can get acquainted with all the options (and there are many of them) in the Chevrolet Captiva.

Is it worth choosing a used Chevrolet Captiva?

Of course, getting into a new car made especially for you is always more pleasant. But it’s also more expensive. After all, the minimum price for the most “empty” car starts at 950,000 rubles. The most expensive equipment exceeds the two million mark. So is it worth that kind of money? Maybe yes. This reliable car, with good internal equipment, and, according to reviews from most owners, in the first years of operation it practically does not break down. You only have to change consumables and undergo scheduled maintenance.

At the same time, as soon as you drive out of the showroom, any car becomes cheaper. So, it will not be possible to return all the invested funds. Selling Captiva is difficult, and buyers often beat the price well. This decrease is mainly due to the expensive maintenance of a used Chevrolet Captiva, and also because of its good appetite. Otherwise the car is very decent. In used condition, this Jeep is affordable.

The minimum price for a car in 2007 in Moscow, where traditionally the lowest price tags for used cars, starts at 450,000 rubles. By becoming the second or third buyer of a Captiva, you can get a richer package for the price of a new, “empty” car. But at the same time, you can also get a bunch of “sores”, which we will discuss below.

What is wrong with the Chevrolet Captiva?

The most expensive thing to treat is the suspension. It is pneumatic, spare parts are expensive, their installation is technologically advanced difficult process. Since the Captiva is still a jeep, many owners try to take it off-road. It’s better not to do this, it will be safer. The catalyst is another headache for the owners of this Chevrolet model. When buying a used car, you should splurge on an inspection at a service center so as not to end up with expensive repairs later.

Replacement of stabilizer struts occurs already at 30,000 - 50,000 kilometers. It's unpleasant, but this is done under warranty. Other problems are not of such a large scale. These are mainly various electrical “glitches” - errors, incorrect operating algorithms, which can be easily treated by specialists in authorized services.

Conclusion

Most often, buyers of this SUV, both used and new, are deterred by the cost of maintenance. But with careful and careful operation, the car rarely breaks down, it is reliable. Otherwise, big problems Captiva will not create, having chosen the Chevrolet Captiva, the owner will receive good car for family and trips to nature, which will organically fit into the city flow.

I have already written about how, and today the story is about a car that is aiming for the segment family SUVs. With seven seats, but without excessive cross-country ability and brutality.

Chervrolet Captiva is simply an ideal representative of this class: a simple and large interior, good asphalt habits, seven seats and a relatively low price by class standards. Moreover, it was possible to purchase a simple front-wheel drive version if snow and mud were excluded in principle. Actually, in this format the car was created not for Russia at all, but for the USA. However, our large and inexpensive machine has, as they say, “got off” - its production has even been established at the company’s St. Petersburg plant.

Structurally Captiva and co-platform Opel Antara With Cadillac SRX- pure passenger cars: the engine is transverse in front, and the suspension is completely passenger-like - MacPherson strut in front and an L-shaped lever, and a multi-link in the rear. The interior is simply huge, and the rear and middle row seats fold down to form a flat floor, and even the right passenger seat has a “tricky” backrest that can be folded flush with the resulting platform. The third row, of course, is not very spacious, but on cars of this size it is intended more for children than for full-fledged seating for adults.

But even in the seven-seater version, the trunk has more volume than other C-class hatches. Drive unit rear axle connected - through a coupling manufactured by JTEKT. The same ITCC system is used and the same clean electromagnetic clutch, which was installed on Toyota RAV4. The system is simple and reliable, but it really doesn’t like slipping - for a moment it’s enough from the engine, but torsional vibrations It does not tolerate transmission and overheats instantly.

Electronic assistants

After the 2011 update, the Hill Descent Control system and hill start assistant appeared for cars with manual transmission. Forced blocking The drive couplings were never added. But the stabilization system has been updated, which for quick and tall car it was important. In the model's main market, the United States, the wheels were mostly driven by housewives rather than rugged, macho racers. By the way, the car’s handling turned out to be quite good, despite the visually very high and narrow body. Not very large rolls, rather sharp taxiing and even a slight tendency to oversteer in extreme conditions - apparently, it was because of this that stabilization was included in the basic configuration.

Motors

What cannot be said about the car at first glance is that it is one of the most powerful crossovers in your class. Initially, a 3.2 V6 engine with a power of 230 hp was installed in the top configuration, and after restyling, another V6 with a volume of 3.0 liters took its place, which developed, depending on the market, from 249 to 283 hp. Cars for the USA were also equipped with a slightly more torquey, but not more powerful 3.6-liter engine, essentially not much different from the first two. Post-restyling diesel engines also showed record power - the older version of the engine developed as much as 184 hp.

There were also plenty of less powerful engines. Until 2011, petrol fours with a volume of 2.4 liters developed an unimpressive 136 hp, and after that the engine was replaced with a completely new one, but of the same displacement, with a power of 167 hp. Diesels 2 liters 150 horsepower in the car before restyling, Italian design. These engines under the hood of other GM cars are rare, but they are often found on Hyundai/Kia models. After restyling, the engine volume increased to 2.2 liters and two power gradations appeared - the top-end engine 184 hp. and a weaker one, developing “only” 163.

Restyling

Chervrolet Captiva 2006–2011

The 2011 update affected not only the engines. The style of the car has changed radically; the soft and not very expressive appearance has been transformed by a new radiator grille and bumper, making the car much more aggressive and noticeable. And five-speed automatic transmissions produced by Aisin were replaced with gearboxes of GM’s own production, which turned out to be not the best solution. Second restyling of 2013 significant technical changes I didn’t bring it, and my appearance changed almost imperceptibly.

Breakdowns and operational problems

Body and interior

The body of cars produced by GM Korea is especially durable paint coating no different, but even at ten years of age there are no obvious problems with corrosion. Affects new standard GM on the quality of protection of steel structures. What is needed here is galvanized, and something else is covered with a thick layer of mastic and plastic. They only forgot about the fifth door, and some of the seams in engine compartment may have damage to the sealant and signs of corrosion even after several years of age.

The obvious disadvantage is that the thickness of the metal of the outer panels is not impressive; they bend easily with your finger. This is all the more strange since the weight of the car is over one and a half hundred kilograms more than that of its main competitors. But according to the reviews of those who visited Captiva in serious accidents, the secret is revealed: the car has a very solid foundation, more reminiscent in the design of the side members of serious “rogues” than a light crossover. Sound insulation, which adds weight, is also very high quality - even the role model in this class, the second and third generation RAV4, turned out to be much noisier. However, the cabins of the co-platform Antara and SRX are even quieter, so the Captiva is still far from reaching the limit of perfection.

The interior is quite simple - there is decent but not great plastic, cheap leather and simple high-quality fabric. Design in the style of cheaper Chevrolets greatly lowers the level of the car, distancing it from the more expensive Opel and Cadillac. It’s especially a shame about the quality of the seats – the driver’s seat could use a more noble profile. During the restyling process, the interior was “ennobled”, making it visually more expensive, but, unfortunately, this modernization did not affect the seats.

Electrics

The electrical equipment of the body and interior is not completely problem-free, although it does not present expensive problems - this is generally typical for GM cars. What's worse is that the engine compartment wiring and underbody electronics suffer quite a lot. The engine compartment "braid" is too "delicate" - sand that gets into the corrugations after several years of operation can cause numerous violations of the wire insulation and equally numerous failures in on-board systems– and mainly on the engine.

After off-road trips, it is recommended to rinse the engine compartment very thoroughly and generally monitor its cleanliness. By the way, “sweating” motors create a lot of troubles - traces of lubricant over time heavily contaminate the compartment below and allow sand to linger inside. Wiring to ABS sensors and clutch all-wheel drive also vulnerable. After crossing fords and serious puddles, it is recommended to check the tightness of the connectors or add lubricant to them at least once every couple of years. Severely chafing front optics, a leaky brake light on the rear door, poor wiring of the rear license plate lights are generally typical for all inexpensive cars, you should not perceive them as a serious drawback of the model. Well, there are no failures of the on-board multimedia system simply because of its simplicity.

Chassis

Car suspensions for passenger cars can be considered exemplary reliable and inexpensive, too. They can even withstand off-road travel without much damage, unless, of course, you drive on dirt and potholes with a loaded car. However, the reliability of the shock absorbers is below average - after 30-40 thousand kilometers they will lose efficiency, and the car’s handling will noticeably deteriorate. You can reach 100-150 thousand with the “original” kit, they won’t leak unless you overheat them, but the driving pleasure is not the same.

Stabilizer struts are completely consumable, as are bushings. With an active style of movement, they have to be changed at every second maintenance if you do not want to listen to their knocking. By the way, its reason may not only be in the suspension - there is a very “delicate” steering rack, which begins to knock at mileage over 50 thousand. But if you monitor the fluid level in expansion tank Power steering, it can work in this state for a very long time - the backlash is minimal, and leaks are usually almost unnoticeable. The power steering pump is not very reliable, but pumps from Opel cars are perfect with minimal modifications, although according to the code they “do not break.” This will be useful to you if the car owner has missed the ATP level in the tank at least once, because the part is not reliable.

Transmission

The reliability of transmissions can generally be assessed as average. Manual gearboxes basically they don’t cause any special problems - you just need to monitor the oil level, because quite traditionally for GM gearboxes “sweat” oil. The strength of the front CV joints and drives is sufficient, except that with a 3.6 engine and a top-end diesel engine there are cases of “cutting off” the splines on the shafts - most likely, one of the batches of drives was not very successful. At the same time, the hinges themselves are reliable and can withstand even short-term work with a torn cover, but here it is important to notice oil leaks in time. The CV joint covers themselves are too “delicate” and tear easily off-road. The same problem occurs with the propeller shaft on all-wheel drive versions; the rubber intermediate support usually fails, followed by the bearing. Theoretically, if such a breakdown occurs, it needs to be replaced. cardan shaft entirely, but in fact there is a completely running cardan bearing with dimensions 71.4 * 24.6, which can be found even on GAZ cars, and a repair insert for the rubber band can also be bought. It is more difficult to break the clutch, because it turns off at the slightest attempt to overheat - emergency mode starts already at 94 degrees. It does not have a separate radiator, nor does it have a complex hydraulic system. Failures are usually associated with a failure of the electronics of the control system, which also entails a failure of the mechanical part. The rear gearbox is also quite “delicate”; it really doesn’t like “throttle to the floor” starts on asphalt and sometimes breaks down with V6 engines.

2 / 2

The type of automatic transmission and its reliability depend on the year of manufacture. Before restyling, there was an Aisin AW55-51, well-known. I have already written about the features of its operation, but I will repeat: it really does not like overheating, has a short service life of the gas turbine engine blocking linings and a very “delicate” valve body. Captiva received the latest revision of the box, which was mostly problem-free. With a calm driving style and a working engine cooling system, it has a chance of 150-200 thousand mileage without much hassle; with active pedaling it will take more frequent replacement oils at least once every 40 thousand kilometers, and replacing gas turbine linings at the first signs of wear.

After restyling in 2011, they installed a new six-speed gearbox of GM’s own production, 6T45/6T40 series. Unlike Japanese automatic transmission, it turned out to be more twitchy, more prone to overheating, with an even shorter lifespan of the gas turbine engine and serious problems with the liners of the box itself. In addition, in the first years of production there were enough “childish” problems with the valve body, but the cooling system was left the same, which new box clearly not enough. As a result, restyled cars have every chance of getting into the “box” service earlier than pre-restyled ones. There are often cases of failures during the warranty period, with very short mileage. True, the box is a little simpler when minor repairs, they are cheaper. But if the bushings are damaged, an extremely costly operation will be required - it is often easier to replace the assembled box.

Motors

One of the great advantages of cars before restyling is, oddly enough, the most weak motor 2.4. After all, this is an old Opel engine, only with very “squeezed” firmware and bored out to a volume of 2.4. The motor itself is extremely reliable - it has cast iron block, resistant to overheating and other troubles, strong piston group, simple system controls and inexpensive “harness”. For those for whom 136 power is not enough, there are many tuning developments, ranging from shafts from the X20XER and Z22XE engines to the Red Top cylinder head from the C20XE with serious modifications and even the installation of turbocharging. Besides Consumables you can find one in almost any village, and even mechanics know it, because this series of engines has been produced for a good twenty years.

The newer 2.4 engine is also familiar to all car enthusiasts - those who have seen the Z22SE series engines, for example. This is already more modern design, with timing chain and balancer shafts in the block. And at the same time - without repair dimensions, with an unpredictable timing life, expensive parts, etc. But in general, the engine is very resourceful and also much more powerful in stock. Special attention It’s worth turning to the timing belt resource - it’s the main source of problems here. If something is ringing when it’s cold, it would be better to immediately find 40-60 thousand rubles to replace the entire set, otherwise the weak pins of the tensioners or dampers may be torn out, the front cover will grind, and in especially serious cases, the timing belt phases are disturbed or the chains simply break . There are ceramic valve guides in the block head, so you won’t get away with it - most likely you will need expensive repairs or replacement. Unfortunately, it is impossible to say when the thunder will strike - usually the chains last 120-150 thousand. This, of course, is not much, but by modern standards it is quite a decent result. However, sometimes problems begin already at 40-60 thousand mileage. Fortunately, masters are familiar with these problems because they are structurally similar. Opel engines, and there are ways to make repairs cheaper, and also avoid recurrence of problems in the future. Rarer V6 engines are also familiar Opel cars and GM. Engines of 3.2 and 3.6 liters are “relatives” Opel Vectra 2.8T and Alfa Romeo 3.2. These very reliable motors have several weak points. Firstly, the timing chain resource here is limited - it is unlikely to last more than 150 thousand kilometers. Moreover, the cost of two chains and four phase shifters is comparable to the price of a contract engine.

Secondly, motors are prone to overheating, and the slightest contamination of the radiators or the failure of one of the fans immediately takes the temperature into the red zone. After this, the engine almost always acquires a good oil “appetite”, which can only be overcome by a bulkhead. And the ignition modules fail even if there is no particular overheating; just an increase in the temperature in the engine compartment due to the installation of a crankcase protection may be enough to make replacing the ignition module a regular occurrence. By the way, a feature of cars with V6 before restyling is also a very expensive exhaust system with a valve that turns off the left muffler at partial loads. Therefore, the left one turns out to be twice as expensive as the right one, all 23 thousand rubles. Since 2010, this system of questionable efficiency has been removed, and the mufflers again cost the same. By the way, the designation of the motor in the Opel catalog Z32SE is misleading; it is very different from the motor with the same name on the Vectra C. For example, the Vectra timing belt and block are completely different. Try not to flaunt your knowledge of the engine model in front of sellers and choose spare parts more carefully. Engine 3.0 – more new series, him direct injection, a more reliable timing belt and a very successful injection pump. Talk about some serious problems It’s just too early, they haven’t had time to manifest themselves, but many owners noted a decent oil “appetite” and the same tendency to overheat at the slightest hint of contamination of the cooling system.

All gasoline engines are highly recommended to have an oil change interval of no more than 10 thousand kilometers, except for the good old 2.4 136 hp. it's not that critical. And the “native” oil DEXOS2 5W30 is also not the best choice. For V6 engines, SAE50 oil is generally recommended, and for in-line fours, regular SAE40 is sufficient. By the way, according to some reviews, the life of the timing chain greatly depends on the oil and its level. 2.0 diesel engines in cars before restyling did not cause any particular complaints from owners. Despite the fact that they arrived in Russia only after driving through Europe, such cars were not officially sold here. Due to the small number of serious statistics on them, there are no complaints about the not very long service life of the injectors, sensitivity to bad diesel fuel and the timing belt resource in our conditions is no more than 60 thousand kilometers. The more powerful 2.2 diesel engines are still simply too new to cause serious breakdowns - in addition to the typical diesel problems with fuel equipment, there are almost no other complaints, except that the automatic transmission is paired with the most powerful motors with a torque of 400 Nm it’s not easy. There are cases of boxes failing during the warranty period.

What to buy?

If the dynamics of the pre-restyling 2.4 engine with automatic transmission are enough for you, then the Chevrolet Captiva is a good choice. You just have to be content with the old interior and rather boring appearance. Newer cars seem to have fewer problems, but a noticeable increase in the number of automatic transmission failures suggests that soon this knot can become really troublesome. On heavy machines, all wear processes occur faster, and the difficulties that owners face Opel Astra and Chevrolet Cruze with a 6T40 automatic transmission will seem like a small thing in comparison with the troubles of Captiva owners. The restyled 2.4 is essentially also not a very new engine, it is noticeably more dynamic and powerful, and in combination with a manual gearbox, no operational difficulties are expected up to a mileage of 120-150 thousand. Perhaps in new series of engines the chances of premature timing failure have also decreased, so this a good choice. V6 engines, both before and after restyling, require more attention. And if the 3.2 engine in combination with a five-speed automatic transmission is generally quite reliable with proper maintenance, then the condition of the automatic transmission on a three-liter is already a mystery. A more powerful automatic transmission of the 6T45 series will most likely have the same set of problems as the more common 6T40, but will they appear with a mileage of up to hundreds of thousands or will they require expensive repairs with runs over 150, it’s still not clear.
