Oil in the wells of candles causes. Why oil appears in the distributor and what to do to fix it

Most likely, most drivers, both experienced and novice, hardly think about what threatens oil getting into candle wells. And absolutely in vain. This phenomenon can be caused by various factors. In many ways, they depend on the model of the engine, and on its type.

In any case, a prudent owner will most likely prefer not to rush headlong to the nearest service station, but to try to solve the problem on his own. So let's dwell on this in more detail.

What is the danger of oil getting into spark plug wells? Such a nuisance can happen quite often, especially on domestic-made cars with decent mileage. We will analyze the elimination of the problem using the example of Lada Priora, a domestic VAZ car, not without some drawbacks.

Possible consequences

The main reason for the appearance of oil in the wells of candles is the wear of the gaskets. And what could be its consequences for the health of your car? In fact, to be honest, such a flaw in operation cannot lead to anything particularly military, according to experienced repairers. That is, you can ride with such a problem, but not for too long. This is not for you to get the same specified lubricant on the cylinder head (cylinder head).

One of the possible consequences is the case when the rubber insulator of the wires (high-voltage) softens, which can also cause a breakdown of the electrical circuit. Just because a breakdown is minor, however, shouldn't mean it's left to chance (many people like to ride until everything closes up and starts to fall off). And if you notice that there is grease in the candle well, the gaskets of this assembly must be changed as soon as possible. So the problem will be eliminated, and the issue will be resolved.

More masters noticed that in this scenario it is necessary to change the candles themselves quite often. Their resource is significantly reduced (several times, according to experience). And if you do not want to unscrew and install new ones with enviable constancy, then you definitely need to do the appropriate repair work.

Repair

How to work out the change of these parts correctly? First, for a successful procedure, you need to prepare the appropriate parts and tools. We will need: a pair of valve cover gaskets, 10 seals, an engine cleaner, 4 well seals. Having collected the above, you can proceed. It is better to carry out the process in a closed, heated and lit room, in extreme cases, in a place closed from wind and dust (because dust can get into unprotected places of the unit, creating additional problems).

We work in several stages:

  • Remove the valve cover, also - the receiver. We close all possible openings in the collector so that unnecessary parts, objects and dust do not get into the assembly itself;
  • Dismount the ignition, hose;
  • We unscrew the bracket bolt on the nozzle (key 10). Then - the screws on the block cover (15 pieces). We remove the cover;
  • Next - you can check the hydraulic pusher. It is done quite simply: with a screwdriver. You need to press (it should press with a good effort). Otherwise, the mechanism is changed. With such a diagnosis with your own hands, carefully make sure that the camshaft cam is directed with the back side;
  • After it is necessary to dismantle the candle wells. This procedure is done using the appropriate puller. It must be inserted into the well of the candle, the nut is tightened and the mechanism is quite easily dismantled;
  • Next, remove the old sealing rings and install new ones in their place;
  • We collect everything in the reverse order. Remember that before assembly, the head must be thoroughly cleaned of dirt and the bearing housing - from old sealant and oil. Shaft cams must be lubricated with fresh grease. Before mounting the housing, apply sealant to the places where it was before dismantling.

Usually, the ingress of engine oil into the candle wells does not cause any particular concern among motorists. But statistics say that, in most cases, there are reasons to fear for the stable operation of the engine, since there should not be oil in the candle wells.
There are several possible reasons why oil enters the spark plug wells, and several nuances can influence this, which should be considered separately. In order not to have to take the car to a service station, you can try to solve this problem without resorting to the services of specialists.
To do this, you first need to determine why the oil got inappropriately. If it suddenly turned out that automobile candle wells are in oil, then you immediately need to track down the cause in order to avert negative consequences.

As a rule, this problem occurs more often in older cars than in new ones. If the candles are in oil, the reasons for this may be due to the fact that cars that have a fairly high mileage suffer the most. If, when replacing candles or during their revision, traces of oil were found, then this most likely indicates the deplorable state of the gaskets, which are worn out in order.

Older cars usually require a large number of gaskets to be replaced, not just spark plug gaskets, and although some motorists believe that it is possible to operate a car in this condition, practice still shows that gasket problems need to be addressed as quickly as possible, otherwise it affect the life of the entire vehicle system as a whole.

Subsequently, the presence of oil in the spark plug wells can cause the insulation of high-voltage wires, which usually consists of rubber, to soften or be corroded by additives, and possibly even the base oil (if the insulation is of poor quality), which, in addition to fouling the wires, can also lead to short circuits and breakdowns electrical circuits.

In this case, the breakdown of current can also damage other devices of the car, which, in addition to unpleasant electric shocks, also threatens the failure of some systems, including electrified ones or those whose functioning depends on liquids inside. In addition, the problem may be exacerbated by the fact that the candles themselves will become unusable over time, and their service life may be reduced. Therefore, oil that gets under the spark plugs will not only force the gasket driver to be changed, but can also lead to the constant need to replace the spark plugs. To avoid this, you need to prevent further oil from entering the candles.

How to remove oil leakage in candle wells yourself?

In order to independently prevent oil from getting under the candles, a few elements will suffice. Further repairs are considered on the example of the Lada Priora car.

First, you need to stock up on a few valve cover gaskets and seals. You will also need to use a lubricant like WD-40, engine cleaner and oil seals. For candle wells, repairs should always be carried out in a room with normal temperature conditions - without drafts and wind, in order to prevent dust and other contaminants from entering the working surfaces.

There are several main successive stages of repair:

1. First you need to remove the valve cover, receiver. At the same time, the collector must be covered, and all openings must be insulated to prevent foreign parts and contamination from entering the assembly.

2. After you need to remove the ignition and remove the crankcase breather tube. Then you should unscrew the bracket under the nozzle and remove the block cover.

3. It is worth checking the hydraulic pusher, pressing on it - it should be pressed under normal effort. The camshaft knuckle must be directed to the rear.

The system is assembled according to the reverse algorithm, while the old sealants and lubricating fluids must be removed from the bearing housing, and the shaft fists must be lubricated with fresh grease.

It is worth noting that in the absence of experience in such repairs, you should not try to carry it out on your own, especially if you do not have the skills to use tools.

In this case, you should contact the nearest car service, where such manipulations will be carried out in just a few hours, but they guarantee an excellent quality of repair.

Thus, the car will serve its owner for a long time, spark plugs and gaskets in the wells will not need to be changed too often.

To understand the reason, as it turned out the oil in the candle well of the VAZ 2110, is necessary after the main thing has been clarified. The reason for this factor may be different, it also depends to some extent on the types of engines.
On the VAZ 2110, oil in candle wells can lead to unpleasant consequences.

The consequences of the appearance of oil

What could be the consequences if you do not pay attention to it in time?
When operating a car with such a defect, a breakdown of high-voltage wires occurs due to the softening of the rubber insulator. Also, premature carbon deposits will occur on the candles, so they will not work out their service life. This leads to frequent replacement.

Engine designs on the VAZ-2110 are constantly being improved. Therefore, on some engines, such as 1.5 liters, guide pipes are installed - glasses.
Engines with a volume of 1.6 liters are not equipped with glasses; candle wells are provided in the design.
You can define it yourself:

  • Unscrew the candle.
  • Visually inspect the nest.
  • If glasses are installed, then the surface is smooth to the top of the well.
  • In the absence of it, two slots are visible in the well.

Engine 1.6 l

The design of the 1.6 liter engines is a more modified version. On such engines, the appearance of oil in the well may be due to poor sealing.
You can try to stretch it first, the nuts on the head studs can be loosened:

  • To do this job, you will need a #8 head.
  • Tightening should be carried out by alternating the nuts of the right side and the left.

Wipe the seats of all candles with a rag. Try the car in operation.
Oil continues to flow into the sockets of the candles, which means it is necessary to replace the sealant layer on the cap seal.
To do this, you need to buy an anaerobic sealant in a car shop:

  • Put the car in the garage.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.

Prepare tool:

  • head No. 8;
  • open-end wrench No. 10, No. 13;
  • a screwdriver with two nozzles - flat, cross-shaped;
  • sharp knife.

Tightening procedure:

  • Press out the plastic retainer.
  • Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the coil output.

  • Unscrew the bolt that secures the coil to the block head cover.
  • Remove the coil from the spark plug well.
  • Disconnect the injector harnesses from the front bracket using the same method. Open-end wrench No. 10 unscrew the bolts of the front, rear brackets.
  • Loosen the screws on the clamps of the crankcase ventilation exhaust hoses, from the nozzles of the cover and cylinder block.
  • Take them off.

The oil level indicator (dipstick) is mounted on the guide bracket, so you need to unscrew the screw of its fastening.

  • Remove guide assembly with pointer.

The intake manifold is attached to the cover with two nuts, unscrew them with an open-end wrench No. 10.
The collector is attached to the head of the block with three nuts No. 13 and two bolts, unscrew them with an open-end wrench:

  • Then remove the manifold.
  • Using a #8 head, unscrew the nuts from the cover studs.

Gently pry the cover away from the block with a flat screwdriver, holding the protrusions around the perimeter with your hand:

  • Take it off.
  • Put on workbench.

On the inside, carefully clean the old sealant with a flat screwdriver. Moisten a rag in the solvent to degrease the places where the sealant was applied.
Wipe the inner surface of the cover with a rag as well. Clean the plane of the block from the applied old sealant, degrease it with a solvent.

Note: do not degrease with gasoline, as it contains oil additives.

After completing the cleaning work, apply a thin layer of sealant along the edge of the block:

  • Put on the cover.

It is necessary to fasten the nuts in the order established by the assembly technology.

1.5L engine

Oil in the candle well can accumulate due to damage to the seals (seals) that are installed in the wells themselves. In each well, glands are installed at the top and bottom of the glass (2 pcs.).
It is necessary to buy oil seals after their inspection. It is necessary to make sure that there are no cuts, cracks, growths on them.
The rubber seal should have a glossy sheen.

Replacement of oil seals

To replace the seals, it is necessary to remove the valve cover, the work on its removal is described above. It is necessary to carry out the process of removing the wells with two flat screwdrivers.
At the top of the wells there is a ledge against which screwdrivers rest from two opposite sides:

  • Gently simultaneously press on the screwdrivers with the same force, remove the glasses.

Warning: be careful when removing the cups, do not let the bottom O-ring fall into the camshaft bearing housing.

From the dismantled glasses, clean the traces of sealant, wipe the places of accumulated dirt around the circumference of the wells with a rag:

  • Install the purchased seals inside the wells, lubricate them with engine oil.
  • The installation of the well must be carried out with care.

The well is fixed with a shoulder, which by design is located at the upper ring of the bearing cover.
Therefore, further work on its installation must be carried out using head No. 22:

  • Install it along the edges of the well, press until it clicks.
  • This will mean that the well is latched with a collar.

The replacement of seals in wells can be carried out without removing the valve cover. To do this, you need to make a puller with your own hands.
Materials for its manufacture:

  • hairpin 14 cm long;
  • rubber hose with a diameter of 25 mm;
  • two metal washers with the outer diameter of the candle well;
  • sleeve;
  • nuts in the amount of 3 pieces.

Put on the hairpin in the sequence:

  • puck,
  • rubber hose,
  • puck,
  • sleeve,
  • nuts.

With the lower washer, the emphasis is placed on the tip of the stud, the upper washer is clamped with a sleeve:

  • insert the manufactured puller into the well,
  • tighten with the lower nut until the well can be removed during axial movement.
  • make a little effort and the glass is removed.

Attention: the applied friction force allows you to remove the puller with a clamped spark plug well. Warning: it must be taken into account that the elastic band of the puller inserted into the glass must not look beyond the edges of the candle well!

By the same principle, work is carried out to install new oil seals along with glasses:

  • Before installation, they must be lubricated with engine oil.

Note: the elastic of the puller should not protrude beyond the edges of the well, otherwise the tightened nut will crush its edges, which will not give the desired effect.

Be careful when removing the spark plug well, do not let the old lower oil seal come off.
Doing the work yourself will allow you to save financial resources in the amount of 1,500 rubles. This is the initial price of a similar repair in a car repair shop.

  • The cost of oil seals is 100 rubles. for one set.
  • The price of anaerobic sealant is about 700 rubles.

Repair to remove the causes that lead to the appearance of oil in the candle well on the VAZ-2110 can be started after watching the video and carefully studying the photos, which indicate all the places for repair work. It is also necessary to read the instructions for applying the necessary precautions.

There must be no technical liquids in the cavity for screwing in the spark plug. If you find oil in the candle wells, we recommend that you eliminate the cause of this malfunction as soon as possible. Consider how dangerous this phenomenon is, as well as the very procedure for sealing joints with a sealant, replacing oil seals, o-rings using the example of VAZ and Toyota engines.

THE MAIN REASON

Oil enters the spark plug wells through a leak in the junction of the elements separating the well from the internal space of the cylinder head. There are several options for the design of the block head.

CRANKCASE VENTILATION SYSTEM

The increased pressure of crankcase gases is one of the main reasons for the accelerated breakthrough of oil through the seals of the candle holes. The principle of operation of the crankcase ventilation of the closed type involves the supply of a mixture of oil vapor, gasoline and exhaust gases back to the intake manifold.

The PCV valve is responsible for dosing a portion of gases. If for some reason the valve does not cope with its task, excess pressure is formed inside the cylinder head. The cause of the malfunction can be both in the valve itself and in a worn-out cylinder-piston group. With worn compression rings, increased clearance between the pistons and cylinders, it is more difficult for the crankcase ventilation system to cope with its task.

In case of heavy fogging around the valve cover gasket, pan, oil in the air filter, spark plug wells, we strongly recommend checking the crankcase ventilation. With increased exhaust pressure, replacing gaskets with an anaerobic sealant will only give a short-term effect.

SYMPTOMS AND CONSEQUENCES

To determine the malfunction, it is enough to pull out the tips of the GDP / ignition modules from the wells and unscrew the candles. An oil film on the elements will be the main sign of leakage. If the cause of oil ingress is not eliminated in time, the engine will start to triple, lose power in all or certain operating modes, which can also result in high fuel consumption. Most likely, due to misfires in the cylinders, the Check Engine light on the dashboard will light up.

The negative impact of engine oil on the seal of the tip of high-voltage wires, ignition coil modules leads to such consequences. The oily environment creates favorable conditions for the breakdown of a spark, as a result of which the combustion of TPVS in the cylinder is disrupted.

REPLACEMENT OF OIL SEALS FOR VAZ 2112 1.5 L, 16 VALVES

To determine the type of device for candle cavities, unscrew the candles and look inside the well. The version from the insert has smooth walls from the beginning to the end of the hole. On VAZ 21126 engines, the joint of the mating surfaces of the valve cover and the bed of the camshafts will be visible.

To replace the seals on the VAZ 2112, it is necessary to dismantle the plastic cover, the inlet receiver, the ignition module, and the crankcase ventilation hose. The wells are removed using a slotted screwdriver (it is necessary to rest against the upper border with a screwdriver). Make sure that the lower gland remains on the tube after exiting. Clean the inserts before installing the seals. The lower oil seal must be lubricated with engine oil. Press in the insert using a tool of suitable diameter until it clicks into place.

Candles will be unscrewed at the time of work, so make sure that no debris or third-party objects get into the cylinders.

In the video, you can see how, using a homemade puller, you can get inserts for replacing candle well seals without removing the valve cover, receiver.

ENGINES 21126

On cars Lada Priora, Kalina, Grant with ICE model 21126, it is necessary to remove not only attachments and the valve cover, but also the camshaft gears and the bed. Eliminating the cause of oil getting into the candle wells is to apply a high-quality anaerobic sealant. Using silicone gasket sealant will not be as effective.

The sealant must be applied in a thin layer to the mating planes of the camshaft bed. Too thick a layer when clamping the parts will cause the sealant to be squeezed out into the cylinder head, which can cause clogging of the lubrication system lines. After installing the valve cover, we also recommend lubricating the internal joints in the candle well with gasket sealant.

SEALING THREADED CONNECTIONS

On Toyota cars and other cars with a similar type of device, repair consists in lubricating the lower and upper threads with sealant. For removal and subsequent installation of the tube, it is necessary to screw and tighten two nuts. It is also necessary to replace the cuffs that seal the joint between the insert of the wells and the valve cover. Detailed instructions for removing attachments, tightening torques, you can find in the repair and operation manual for your car model. We invite you to watch a video of the repair.

The ingress of debris, foreign objects into the engine cylinders, cylinder head, can lead to a decrease in resource and serious damage. Therefore, do all work as carefully as possible.

A car engine is a combination of a large number of systems and components that work for one common result. Despite this, the intervention of one system in the "life activity" of the other can lead to a malfunction of both and even disable the entire power unit.

To isolate individual systems, the manufacturer provides various glands and gaskets that seal and seal connections and prevent mixing of liquids and gases. However, due to the fact that the motor constantly works in difficult conditions and is subjected to high loads, gaskets and seals often become unusable, as a result of which the tightness in a particular system is broken.

Today, dear friends, we will tell you about why oil penetrates into candle wells and what it means for the engine. We will also briefly talk about how to solve this problem.

An oil leak is always bad, and not only in terms of oil consumption and its cost. Various oil leaks often lead to the formation of soot in different parts of the engine, unstable operation of the power unit, and the appearance of a thick layer of dirt on the motor housing.

In the candle well of Fords, this is a fairly common phenomenon, but this does not mean at all that other cars are completely devoid of such a "sore". Moreover, you can see the oil in the candle wells not only on cars with high mileage, often even new cars already have such an unpleasant defect from the assembly line. This was due to the fact that during assembly, the sealant simply did not have time to grab properly or was simply of poor quality. If this problem is not eliminated in a timely manner, during operation it can lead to malfunction of the spark plugs, coil, and also to unstable engine operation. The most common problem after oil enters the candle wells is spark breakdown and misfires in the cylinders. The motor starts to lose power, troit and runs intermittently.

Why is this happening?

Oil enters the spark plug wells through a leak in the valve cover. This may be a poor-quality gasket or sealant, a problem with well seals, poor tightening, or a violation of assembly rules. Most often, it is the connection exclusively on the sealant that gives the leak, which during operation is subjected to constant thermal loads, from which it can deform and dry out. As a result, a leak occurs and oil penetrates into the candle wells.

Eliminate the problem of oil getting into spark plug wells

This work involves the dismantling of: intake manifold, timing belt cover, valve cover. After obtaining the necessary access to the workplace, the joint should be cleaned from the remnants of the gasket and old sealant. You should work carefully, using wooden or plastic scrapers, metal counterparts can leave scratches, which will inevitably lead to new problems associated with depressurization. There are also many specials for sale. chemistry, which without any problems removes any sealant. After that, everything is degreased and a new layer of sealant is applied to the joint. Assembly is carried out in reverse order, the bolts are tightened with a torque wrench.

In general, the process of replacing a gasket or valve cover sealant is not difficult, the most important thing in this process is to correctly remove the old sealant and apply a new one. The tightening of the bolts also plays an important role, the wrong effort can negate all your efforts.

After completion of work, it is necessary, or at least to check and clean the old candles.

If everything is done correctly, you will no longer see oil in the Ford spark plug well. If, after the repair, the oil enters the candle collectors again, I recommend contacting specialists who can perform a better and more efficient repair.

I have everything, thank you for your attention and see you at. Bye everyone, write in the comments on what signs you found oil in the candle wells and how you solved this problem.
