In Ukraine, the Audi A3 Sedan is available with two petrol engines. But only the more powerful 180-horsepower version is offered with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. But if you have your eye on a more modest modification with a 122-horsepower engine, you still have to think about the type of gearbox, one of the three trim levels and a list of additional options.

How uncomfortable it is for him to get over the transmission tunnel, which rises almost flush with the sofa cushion.

There is enough enthusiasm

The main striking force in the struggle for a buyer in this car can be a 1.4-liter engine developing 122 hp. With. Our car is equipped with a 7-speed S-tronic, which seems like a reasonable choice for those who spend most of their time in the city. And it’s a sin to complain about the speed of the gearbox with two clutches when switching. In any case, this power unit showed itself well done. It easily gains momentum and accelerates the car in every gear, at the end of which the tachometer needle habitually shoots back, as if burning itself on the red zone. Who stayed in the editorial office for a month, and then he came to us Audi hatchback A3. More powerful (180 versus 140 horsepower) and all-wheel drive, but built on the same modular Volkswagen MQB platform. We asked ourselves: does it make sense to overpay for an Audi, or will a regular Golf be just as good?

What's the point in getting an Audi? First of all, it looks more expensive and more interesting. And if the proportions of the three-door can still be argued, then the five-door version of the Sportback is definitely beautiful. And the new sedan is not bad.

But much more important is the ability to order A3 with all-wheel drive. Golf does not give such an opportunity - unless, of course, it is a charged 300-horsepower version of R.

The S line package includes "evil" bumpers and a grille. The wheels of "our" car are 18-inch.

True, if you want the Audi A3 without fail with all-wheel drive, you will have to pay extra for a powerful 180-horsepower 1.8 TFSI engine and an S tronic box - and such a car costs at least 1 million 194 thousand rubles. All other modifications - with 1.2 TFSI engines with a power of 105 or 122 horsepower, as well as with two-liter diesel with a capacity of 143 forces - purely front-wheel drive.

Is the Audi A3 Sportback a hatchback or a station wagon? Perhaps something in between.

At the same time, even the base Audi A3 with a 105-horsepower engine and mechanical box costs from 849 thousand rubles. It has no climate control, no xenon headlights, no parking sensors, no multimedia system MMI, not even fog lights. Almost a million for emptiness! And "our" A3 is not very rich equipment (xenon headlights, climate control, leather and Alcantara trim, S-Line package, MMI yes system keyless entry) will cost more than 1 million 700 thousand rubles.

Have they gone crazy? Even the maximum equipped test Volkswagen Golf cost for one Renault Logan cheaper.

But look at the salon. Cool design, decent materials. And how "tasty" the air vents click, with what wonderful effort all the keys are pressed, how filigree the new MMI system control unit is made! And, by the way, the mirrors of the Audi A3 are much more convenient than those of the Golf, if only because you can see at least something in them.

And the biggest pride of the owner should be caused by a multimedia system with a color display retractable by means of an electric drive. Let this particular A3 make sense from it, like from a disk drive in an iPad - after all, there is no navigation, no car settings, no "wired" instructions, or even the ability to connect the player via bluetooth or USB - but how beautiful it looks. And you can brag to the passengers.

But even here it is not without sin. The driving position is not ideal, the pseudo-sport seats are too “flat”, and the steering wheel itself is large - or is this a hint that you have to pay extra for a “sporty” three-spoke?

And the main claim, oddly enough, to how the Audi A3 rides.

Tyts! This Audi A3 started off. Although the clutch discs six-speed box S tronic spend their whole lives in oil baths, the transmission does not allow them to close smoothly at the start - hence the jerks with each more or less intense acceleration. And if the Auto Hold system is turned on, which automatically tightens the handbrake at stops, then you have almost no chance to move smoothly. Really in this way Volkswagen concern decided to fix the reliability problems of this unit?

Compared to the three-door hatchback, the A3 Sportback's wheelbase has been increased by 35 millimetres. So the rear passengers will be more spacious.

For fun, we got into the official Audi configurator and tried to calculate how much the most equipped A3 (not S3!) would cost.

In motion, S tronic works better: upshifts are smooth and instantaneous, reactions to a sharp press of the accelerator are immediate. Worse, the box often interferes with my comfort by downshifting too hard when braking. That's what it is!

Not everything is in order with the smoothness of the ride: the S line suspension itself is harsh, but worse is that it also has problems with energy intensity. When driving through bumps and speed bumps, fortunately, it doesn’t come to a breakdown - but it’s also not very pleasant. It is doubly insulting: after all, the vibration and noise isolation of the Audi A3 is beyond praise.

Jerks and shaking, of course, will not strain if worn on the A3 like crazy: a frostbitten driving style easily levels these little things. Moreover, a 180-horsepower engine (torque - 250 Newton meters) allows: Audi exchanges a hundred in 6.8 seconds. Other full-fledged hot hatches still don’t know how to “exchange” like that.

The new Audi A3 comes in four body styles: three- and five-door hatchback as well as sedan and convertible. Our opinion is that the five-door Sportback looks the best.

But I don't want to! The 1.8 TFSI engine sounds unconvincing: a similar engine on Seat Leon FR is much more bass. Steering wheel: not to mention the fact that because of its size and bony rim you can really imagine yourself as a trolley bus driver, the effort on it is somehow completely frivolous.

Despite the fact that the car is controlled well. Banks, thanks to the S line suspension, are small, Audi responds readily to turning the steering wheel, steering is close to neutral. But it's really interesting to ride only in the snow. To the plug-in all-wheel drive (we tried both versions - both front-wheel drive and quattro), which is usually scolded for being "dishonesty", no questions asked. The fifth generation Haldex clutch works proactively and delivers torque to rear wheels before slipping the front. You can even drive a snow-covered turn "almost in a skid." Almost - because the stabilization system still does not turn off completely. As soon as the slip exceeds the predetermined angle, the electronics will unceremoniously stop the drift race.

Let us immediately note that compact sedan premium class - a car that is extremely rare. And the direct competitors of the Audi A3 Sedan - not just one, two, and counted, but you don’t even have time to count up to two - only one Mercedes CLA fits this definition. Everything else or larger size, or below the premium level.

For the test, we got the most powerful version of this car, with 180 hp petrol turbo engine and, in addition, all-wheel drive, with a robotic seven-speed gearbox in the Ambiente performance line. Current price such a car - 1,615,000 rubles, excluding the cost of additional equipment.

The design is completely classic for the modern line of Audi sedans. And it's the same in German. A3 is the same A4, only a bit smaller, or the same A6, this time much smaller. At the same time - the same stylish face and a magnificent silhouette, which looks especially attractive, in my opinion, in red.

Inside - classic for models concern VAG feeling of quality. Everything, no matter what the hand touches or whatever the eye falls on, looks made with high quality, from high-quality materials and in German to the conscience. Buttons are pleasant to press, panels and knobs are pleasant to touch, and so on. All this is compensated for no less than traditional for cars Volkswagen some kind of ... facelessness or something. Inside, everything is extremely functional and concise, right down to the instrument panel - nothing is missing, but there are no frills either. In a word, everything is exactly as it should be!

Is it tight? Yes, it's tight. But depending on what to compare. If with Mercedes CLA, then in Audi even a little more spacious. And if with a four or six of the same "Audi", then of course it's crowded. At the same time, in the back row you can find central deflectors, a 12V cigarette lighter socket, and pockets in the front row seats.

The seats are comfortable, with sufficient lateral support, there is nothing to complain about with all your desire. There is no crampedness in the back row of seats and there is almost a lot of legroom, well, except that a tall passenger will rest against the ceiling with his head because of such a roof line ...

Let's go. The car we got for the test has a 180-horsepower gasoline engine, with a torque of 280 Nm. The engine is more than enough to quickly accelerate this, in general, not the easiest machine. Acceleration to hundreds declared by the manufacturer is a magnificent 6.8 seconds. But the curb weight of the car is quite large - 1,455 kg.

The steering wheel is short and precise. Suspension is moderately stiff, shakes a little on bumps, but handling and cornering stability are just great.

With all the splendor of the motor, it’s impossible to call the engine gluttonous. Exactly the opposite. Fuel consumption according to the passport is 8.2 liters in the city and 5.5 liters on the highway. In fact, not much more. City - 9.5-10, highway - 6.5-7.

Dimensions: length 4456 mm, width 1796 mm, height 1416 mm. Wheelbase - 2,637 mm. The trunk is quite roomy for a car this class- 390 liters.

The Audi A3 Sedan is available on Russian market in three configurations, and all of them, by some strange whim of a marketer, begin with the letter "A" - Ambiente, Ambition and Attraction. Let it look like a branded feature, but it is extremely inconvenient to navigate them. The gearbox is either a 6-speed manual or the S Tronic robot. Three options for powertrains - a 1.4 turbo gasoline engine with 125 hp, a 1.8 turbo gasoline engine with 180 hp. and a 2-liter turbodiesel with 143 hp. Of the available 18 combinations of configurations, engines, transmissions, 3 are offered with all-wheel drive, the rest with front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive is available only for the 180-horsepower gasoline engine. The price range is from 1,225,000 to 1,615,000 rubles.

It is surprising that even in the most richly packaged initially (but excluding special stages) car there are no things that are slowly becoming elementary and for more modest brands such as navigation, rear view camera, electric folding mirrors, LED headlights and even a USB connector. At the same time, even in the list of additionally installed for extra money, for some reason, there is no steering wheel heating.

Although our car does not have variable-rate shock absorbers magnetic ride, the chassis works elastic and knocked down. And even on a sports suspension lowered by 15 mm with stiffer springs and shock absorbers, the Audi A3 Sedan did not become rude to passengers. He does not allow himself to be hit and even allows a slight buildup of the body on rough roads. Everything worked out, but I still didn’t even drive up to the curb in the parking lots, even backwards, where the overhang is still higher.

Few people will discern in the guise of a golf class sedan from Audi a resemblance to the familiar five-door A3. In a new form factor for itself, the model is perceived more solid and older than the hatchback. Only the radiator grill, front optics and door handles are related to the latest new sedan - everything else was developed for the four-door on an exclusive basis. Not surprisingly, very few recognize the A3 in it. The Germans did not just attach the “backpack” of the trunk to the back of the hatchback - they increased wheelbase 5 mm, made the car 11 mm wider and 9 mm lower than the A3 Sportback: the silhouette of the novelty has become more rapid, as if sprawling along the road. The four-door A3 surprised me pretty much. Not so much for meticulous finishes or fascinating handling - for an Audi built on the Golf platform, both go without saying. The sedan turned out to be extremely comfortable and roomy in long trips. The four of us rode it almost three thousand miles from Munich to Naples and back, and none of my passengers ever complained about crowding or any other inconvenience. The magnificent driver's seat did not cause the slightest criticism, and three middle-sized riders can also be accommodated on the sofa. And they will not only fit, but they will also travel a hundred kilometers - it has been verified.

Moreover, the trunk contained all the belongings needed by four travelers on a two-week voyage - with two adult women in the crew, we, you know, could not limit ourselves to the minimum luggage. How German engineers managed to pack enough spacious salon and a deep hold in a relatively compact form, and even give a certain solidity? Mind unbelievable!

The Audi and Daimler engineers thought about coming up with something “compact, but not a hatchback” at about the same time, and much later the idea was picked up by their fellow competitors from BMW. The Bavarians realized before others that one hatchback in the "premium" (and even in underdeveloped markets) will not go far, and when developing the very first series with the E87 index, they drew not only bobtail hatchbacks, but also a real (that is, two-door) coupe. Competitors immediately began to invent retaliatory measures. Of course, I would like to say that Audi played “from an opponent”: they say, BMW has a real coupe, Mercedes has not quite, so we will have a traditional sedan. But no, the CLA and A3 Sedan appeared in public ten weeks apart. So the people of Ingolstadt just once again demonstrated their conservatism. And you guessed it: a car that almost copies the five-door from front bumper to the rear wheel arch, in the first nine months of 2014, it sold 2714 copies in our country: this is more than the CLA and the 2nd series combined. Touche!

You can raucously defend the advantages of hatchbacks over sedans, appealing to their practicality, but this car is able to put an end to unnecessary disputes. From the point of view of sedan fans, the A3 Sedan is not even a trump card that slipped out of the sleeve of a German company. This is a joker who smiles contemptuously into the eyes of the champions of the triumph of functionality, mockingly asking: “Why so serious?” Meanwhile, the car itself looks deliberately mature. You want to confuse it with the older A4 model, but it doesn’t work out - the “three-ruble note” seems much prettier. Actually, starting a speech about the merits of this sedan, it is quite possible to confine ourselves to the only point "firstly, it's beautiful." Surprisingly harmonious appearance!

Nice salon too. At first glance, it seems minimalist, although in reality it is not. Its full charm is revealed in complex details: in addition to the fact that these buttons, knobs and controllers look expensive, they are also perfectly designed ergonomically. And the most dubious artistic decision, in my opinion, can be considered "Spartak" red and white embellishments, which bring some dissonance into this laconic interior.

There are many cars produced in the world with a thoughtful and high-quality interior, but those that make you declare yourself publicly are few. And A3, to my own surprise, is just one of them. Decent noise insulation, well-balanced ergonomics, exemplary seats - all this is just the tip of the iceberg. But what a construct! You will not find such attention to detail and quality of finish in any other business class car. Space deflector washers, elegantly lined console keys, MMI multimedia system buttons – all this makes you want to touch more often than the situation requires. Just because you experience incredible pleasure from interacting with any element interior fittings. And even the optional red and white inserts a la Spartak Moscow successfully dilute the strict classics of the interior. Of course, adjusted for the scarlet body color. In other words, there are no more doubts about the belonging of this car to the “premium” league. As well as in the popularity of the new A3 Sedan among connoisseurs of quality for quite reasonable money.
