Gottlieb Daimler (1834 - 1900), who was born into the family of a baker in a small town near Stuttgart, had to show enviable perseverance in his adolescence so as not to become a successor to the family craft. In the end, having received his father's blessing, at the age of 13 he came as an apprentice to a weapons workshop, where for almost 10 years he bore the barrels of hunting rifles, planed butts and straightened triggers. And only in 1857 he entered the Stuttgart Polytechnic Institute. And after his graduation, he gained experience at the factories of England, France and Belgium, until he got to the factory in Reutlingen in 1863.

It was a charitable or, as they say now, a social institution that provided work for the disabled, orphans and the poor. It was here that Daimler met the gifted nineteen-year-old engineer Wilhelm Maybach (1846 - 1929), who lost his parents at the age of eleven. Once in the shelter, the young man not only completed a full course of secondary education, but also acquired at first the profession of a draftsman, and later a designer. Maybach became an ally and partner of Daimler for many years.
