I was waiting for a meeting with this car, "like a nightingale of summer." I thought that when I sit behind the wheel, I will feel like a different person - a real European. And then, finally, a call from Mercedes: “Remember, you wanted to ride smart?” And after a couple of weeks I flew to Dusseldorf, where a line of “charged” smart phones with the magnificent name BRABUS Xclusive debuted for a narrow circle of publications from around the world.

BRABUS?! These are solid and powerful Mercedes-Benz, what does smart kids have to do with it?

In some ways, you are right - against the background of the Brabus Gelendvagens and Esoks, these compact cars look at least strange. But there are no rules without exceptions. At first glance, smart and BRABUS are at opposite poles in the automotive industry, although in fact their cooperation has been going on for 14 years. Today BRABUS has 2,500 employees worldwide, more than 360 of whom work at the company's headquarters in Bottrop. Every year, 17,500 modified cars come out from under the “scalpel” of the Brabusians. Of these, about 10,000 are smart, and the rest wear a three-pointed Mercedes-Benz star.

The "sphere of influence" of BRABUS extends to absolutely all components and assemblies that are only in the car, and which (at least theoretically) can be improved. After the “operation”, the cars are assembled with their own logos and a recognizable black letter “B”, replacing the Stuttgart star.

This is not a Ferrari, but the attention of those around you is guaranteed.

And what, a miracle happened to smart?

Miracles don't happen. However, let's first calibrate the coordinate system according to the standard, that is, according to the previous generation machine.

The first smart fortwo packed a ton of frustration into its tiny wheelbase. Almost everything in it was upsetting - the “hiccupping” suspension, the “robot” for slowpacks, the inaccurate steering wheel and the dynamics for pensioners. It was unbearable to drive the fortwo - when you got out of it, you had every right to say: "Here you see? I told you! And you are “smart-smart” ... Give the keys to the Range Rover here, there is a parking lot in two kilometers. ”

So smart won't end our obsession with huge cars?

And no, and yes. The compact smart fortwo is an amazing tool for solving the problem of parking in a big city. It feels like you are parking your own body instead of a car. The steering angle of the front wheels is 51 degrees - almost like a drift car!

The main feature of the new fortwo is a small turning circle - 6.95 m.

The new smarts have already got rid of those "sores" that bothered the previous generation, and BRABUS specialists carried out the first "work on the mistakes" after the Stuttgarters. It would seem that the trick is in the bag, but there are a couple of "buts". About them a little later.

So what has changed?

BRABUS has worked not only on appearance. The special version received the most powerful engine available - a 109 hp turbo unit. with a reconfigured six-speed preselective gearbox. The tuners "sharpened" the suspension (20% stiffer) and steering, set other settings for the electronic stability control system. So now my Xclusive Red is as bright as it looks.

What else is interesting? Options! For example, there was a stabilization system equipped with a strong side wind counteraction function, an assistant to help when starting up a hill, a collision warning system and a road marking monitoring system. Among purely convertible options, I note an optional shield that protects passengers from gusts of wind in the cabin.


At the beginning, you talked about the whole line of smart BRABUS. Were there other models?

Certainly! At the exit from the Düsseldorf airport, a whole dozen smart fortwo cabrios of various colors were waiting for me. A great way to take an auto-trip around a new city!

The main thing in this new smart is the roof. In the raised state, it is amazingly insulating from noise, and it folds faster than many run a hundred meters - in just 12 seconds, at any speed (even at maximum speed - 155 km / h). To achieve the full effect, however, you will also have to manually remove and fold the side roof ribs into the trunk.

And so, you lower the roof, and all the emotions of the world around you fall on you. Colors, sounds, smells. And, of course, the wind - when you go over 90 km / h, communication in the cabin is already taking place in raised tones.

The new roof, made using the proprietary tritop three-layer technology, is 4% larger than its predecessor, and its area is now 1.8 m². The outer shell is made from a heavy-duty polyacrylic fabric, with a layer of rubber in the middle, and an interior made from a polyester/cotton blend. The thickness of this sandwich is only 2 cm.

Knowing how scrupulously BRABUS treats the decoration of its interiors, I decided that I would not give concessions to the new “smart”. The previous generation was distinguished by the presence of hard plastic, dubious aluminum inserts, the extensive use of fabric trim, and the mirrors were adjusted manually using plastic levers. All this did not add solidity. BRABUS listened to the comments and did not let it slip.

All test models were equipped with Xclusive equipment, which features sports seats with perforated nappa leather upholstery with gray stitching, a combined instrument panel trim (leather/fabric), a tachometer with a clock on a stem, Xclusive badges near the exterior mirrors (there is power adjustment), BRABUS floor mats, heated front seats, LED daytime running lights and lights, rain and light sensors. Of course, these "buns" affected the final price of the car - plus 3,000 euros.

  • The tachometer combined with the clock rotates along the vertical axis. This is convenient, for example, when the sun is shining and you need to get rid of glare on these devices.
  • Air ducts are made without traditional lattices and "blinds". At first, adjusting the direction of the air is unusual.
  • The screen and control buttons of the multimedia system for smart phones are the same as for Renault Clio. Not the worst option, but not outstanding either.
  • The smart dashboard is bright and beautiful, but vaguely resembles the “tidy” of its predecessor. There are problems with readability and information content.
  • On the passenger side, there is a "hiding place" - a retractable box in which you can hide a change and a phone.
In general, there is no feeling that you are in a cramped car: the back of your head does not scrape the ceiling (in the coupe version), you can throw a travel bag back, and the passenger does not lean on you with his whole body. In a word - you can live! Although, of course, out of habit, the right elbow is looking for an armrest, and only a miniature women's clutch will fit in the glove compartment.


Thanks to the rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, it became possible to place the wheels almost at the corners of the body, while freeing up legroom for passengers.

And the trunk?

He is here. The refrigerator, of course, will not fit, but two travel bags with a backpack will fit. The rear door is divided into two parts: the upper one opens the window, and the lower one provides access to the trunk. In a special compartment on the tailgate, you can also put an emergency stop sign, a first aid kit and a reflective vest.

In the trunk, regardless of the position of the roof in the cabrio, 185 liters of volume are always available.

Outside the city limits, my path lay to the southwest of Düsseldorf - to the ATC (Aldenhoven Testing Center) training ground. It was opened 2 years ago on the territory of a former coal mine. The test center turned out to be modest - a two-kilometer oval, one of the straights of which is usually allocated for the “acceleration-braking” exercise, then there is a site with slalom and “rearrangement”, as well as an 800-meter track with five turns. Sparsely ... On the other hand, why complain? We didn’t come to test sports cars, even if they were “Brabus” ones!


Many people are concerned about the issue of security. In ordinary smart uses a high-strength Tridion capsule that protects you as well as a special frame in rally cars.

We had a chance to speak with Mr. Swan Gramm, who is in charge of PR and advertising at BRABUS, and Ralph Kraum, head of car interiors, on the spot.

Sven said that it can take up to 4 weeks to prepare a set of tuning accessories for one smart BRABUS. And it takes at least 24 hours to complete a tuned car with parts. All BRABUS tuning parts are made in Germany, no "Made in China". Sven himself calls himself and his colleagues great enthusiasts, not forgetting to add that all of his employees are professionals worth looking for.

« Previously, the same employees were engaged in tailoring the interior, as well as assembling some parts. Now the labor is divided, otherwise either the quality of the assembly or the cut suffers.' adds Ralph.

Sven says they get cars in three ways: We order directly from Mercedes-Benz, we buy from local dealers (if we have the equipment we need), or we work with client cars».

If you do this, then the performance of the intercooler will not be enough”, Gramm summed up, and added that the engine life is at least 240,000 km for the turbocharged variant, and even more for the naturally aspirated one.

Therefore, BRABUS thoughtfully worked on a regular 0.9-liter turbo unit, providing it with an optimized fuel injection system (up to 2 bar), a modified exhaust, a more efficient air supply system, etc. As a result, a 90 hp motor. "rocked" up to 109 hp and 170 Nm (from 2000 rpm) - this is 7 hp. and 23 Nm more powerful than the previous version from BRABUS.

The fuel tank is small, 25 liters. Consumption according to the passport - 4.5 liters.

Numbers are numbers, but how does it ride?

Judging by appearance, you can never say that smart is capable of sporting feats. The image of a smart in our heads is still associated with the tenderness of women and the bewilderment of men. At the same time, about the same number of “smarts” travel around Düsseldorf as S-Classes travel around Kyiv.

The acceleration dynamics of the smart fortwo with an engine capacity of a couple of cans of soda will impress only those who are used to riding a road bike through mountain passes. Acceleration to hundreds in 9.5 seconds. The reaction of the motor to the recessed accelerator pedal at the start can be called, to put it mildly, "slow". German engineers explain the delay simply - the motor is small, and there is little traction on the bottoms even despite the turbocharging.

The drive wheels are rear, the engine is right above them. Drift mobile? From my personal point of view, anyone who wants to buy a fortwo BRABUS to challenge sports cars needs to re-evaluate their priorities in life. And all my attempts to consciously disrupt a one-ton minicar into a skid had exactly zero success. And it is clear why - smart fortwo, first of all, is a city car.

However, even before the smallest "Brabus" pleased not with passport data, but with behavior on the road. Here, of course, there are only solid “likes”.

Having traveled a hundred kilometers on the autobahn, you understand that they have worked on the engine of this car. He rides in the stream cheerfully, despite the weight (940 kg) and the volume of the motor (0.9 l).

Smart has moved away from the exclusive three-bolt rims and switched to a regular 4x100 layout. The reason is banal - unification with Renault models. Standard tires are 165/65R15 front and 185/60R15 rear and optional 16" wheels: 185/60R16 and 205/45R16.


It's funny, the Germans gave this little car a launch control function - the Race Start mode, with which you can drown the gas and brake pedal at the same time, and then release the brake. The instructors say that real pleasure is not in pure numbers, but in emotions. And you know, with the "launch" it really became more fun!

The old robotic "box" of smarts seemed to be autistic, so most customers preferred the "mechanics". It's no longer needed, as Getrag's new six-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG-style) responds 40% faster thanks to shorter gear ratios.

The result of the joint smart-Brabus efforts turned out to be quite good. Smart, without unnecessary pauses and rolls, stands on the arc and holds on to it perfectly. Yes, he stands up on his tiptoes, but then he gathers his strength and clings to the asphalt.

Is there a fear of rolling over in a turn at speeds over 100 km/h? Eat. This is a light car, it has a large windage.

Time to change the "horse" - soon to the airport - I change to smart forfour. This is "smart", in which there is less sense, but more space. A similar situation was when MINI switched to urban crossovers.

The presence of another row of seats here is more for marketing than for the convenience of rear passengers. No matter how a person of average height gets behind the wheel, either he or the one who sits behind will rest on his knees.

Mercedes has tried to make the modest interior of the forfour as functional as possible - the rear seats fold flush with the floor, even a 50-inch flat-screen TV can be comfortably transported. The front seat back also folds down. The Germans assure that in this case a flat package with a rack 2.2 meters high will fit in the car. I'll take my word for it.

Okay, love it! But who needs a tiny BRABUS?

These machines have no competitors in their class. Aston Martin used to produce Cygnet, but due to the fact that buyers noticed too many parts from the Toyota iQ, the project had to be curtailed. Here, there is no smell of “rendality”!

The priority for buying smart is to rush through the streets of the city, and for these purposes the car is ideal. Many manufacturers entered our market with compact models, but none could gain a foothold. The obvious problem is cost. It is difficult for our man to understand why such a baby costs like a C-Class sedan or hatch. The European audience of "smart" obviously has other values ​​and priorities.

However, there are other reasons for purchasing smart. Sven told a funny story: Our client paid the full amount for the completion of his car. After assembling the car, it turned out that we spent less money than we had planned. The difference in price has reached the cost of smart in a good configuration. Ultimately, the client said that he did not need money, but there was not enough golf cart».

BRABUS customers are individualists who need to have their dream car built. They love everything unusual and unique; in the best quality and from the best materials in the world. This is what BRABUS offers.

It would seem that just a slight increase in power and refinement of some components, but this was enough to significantly change the behavior of the car.

P.S. Düsseldorf surprised us with the absence of a lot of car traffic in the city center and the inspiring picture of half-empty streets and lanes. Less than 700,000 people live here. The city also impressed with an eclectic architectural combination of houses and office skyscrapers. And, of course, the tunnels that seem to permeate the entire central part of Düsseldorf. There are 7 bridges across the Rhine River, which divides the city into two parts, so getting from the left to the right bank is easy. In the city center on Mittelstraße there are fast food restaurants with cuisine for every taste.

The smallest and cheapest car in Russia is the Indian Bajaj Qute. Its price does not exceed 250 thousand rubles, it rides with the help of a 13.5-horsepower motorcycle engine, it rides badly and it is dangerous to ride in it. Neither Mercedes nor the watch company Smart knew this when they jointly created one of the most compact cars on the planet. The first serial Smart could be both the smallest Mercedes in the world and the most expensive watch on wheels. As a result, the world got a nice city car, and when this baby fell into the hands of specialists from Brabus, especially in the latest generation of 2016-2017, the auto public began to be less sarcastic about its size and even give way. There is progress.

    Why Brabus Smart

    The court Mercedes tuning studio was not always so popular and certainly would never have paid attention to the compact A-class car. The segment itself is going through hard times, it was at the turn of the century that city cars, due to their novelty, enjoyed increased interest from the progressive public, and now they do so, insofar as.

    Nevertheless, of the 170 thousand cars sold annually by Brabus, about a hundred are accounted for by Smart. As many as two-thirds of sales! This is despite the fact that Brabus has previously modified mainly Geliki and S-class sedans. It turns out that European society is changing, and Brabus clearly grasped this.

    And this fall, in Moscow, official dealers began selling charged Smart Fort Brabus 2016-2017 model years. In September, three models were presented at once - a two-door double Smart Fortwo Brabus, a five-door four-seater Smart Forfor Brabus hatchback and a two-door meringue convertible. Moreover, the Smart Fortwo Cabriolet Brabus turned out to be the most expensive. The most inexpensive is the double Smart Fortwo, you can buy it for 1,360,000 rubles. The price of a five-door is 1,400,000, while the cabrio version is estimated at 1,500,000 rubles. Standard Smart can be bought on average 120-130 thousand cheaper, depending on the configuration.

    Compact and nimble Brabus Smart

    There is an intermediate option, this is the Brabus Sport Pakage and it costs about $ 1900, although it is only available in the US market so far. The peculiarity of these cars is that all changes, all tuning of the car concerns only the interior and external decorative bells and whistles. Specifications are no different from the stock, non-Brabus Smart. The main advantage that the sports package provides is the perfectly tuned Brabus suspension. Stiffer springs will be installed there, other shock absorbers, anti-roll bars will have different characteristics. As a result, the clearance decreased by 10 mm, the car received sharper handling and, they say, the dynamic characteristics also somehow changed. Exactly how, they don't say. Another advantage of the sports package is that it can be installed not only on a new, but also on a used Smart Fortwo or Smart Convertible. But no sports package can replace a real Brabus, which improves everything that can be improved.

    Smart of the past generation could be called a car with a big stretch. And the point here is not only and not so much in size, but in its inadequate behavior on the road and at the same time a fabulous price. The length of the new standard Smart has not changed, the car has become a little higher, but the main thing is that the company took into account the dangerous tendencies of the body to collapse at speed in corners. Yes, this is not a racing car, however, an increase in body width and track by as much as 110 mm made it possible for the driver not to feel at the wheel of a shoebox, shying away from every oncoming truck. Even in its base trim, the Smart feels like a normal human-sized hatch. Not to mention the improvements that the alchemists of their Brabus implement in full-fledged production conditions.

    The suspension on the smallest Brabus is 22% stiffer than stock and grippier than stock. The car literally sticks to the asphalt at any speed and does not tend to fall on the side from a gust of wind, aerodynamic impact from a passing truck and in an unexpectedly sharp turn. At the same time, the car retained decent comfort, this is not a track car with a furious stiff suspension. MacPherson plugs are installed in the front, as on the stock Smart, and the rear suspension is a rigid DeDion beam. Each of the two-door Brabuses received original alloy wheels and special edition tires from Yokohama. The rear wheels are 17, the front ones are 16 inches, yes, this can cause some difficulties when changing tires, but since Smart does not have a spare wheel at all, selecting tires by diameter will seem like just entertainment.

    Everywhere are reminders that this is not an ordinary Smart, but a Brabus

    Stock Smart does not spoil engines and gearboxes too much, and Brabus - even more so. A standard baby is supposed to have only two motors:

    • liter aspirated with three cylinders with a capacity of 71 forces;
    • 900 cc petrol 90 hp three-cylinder turbocharged engine;
    • for our Smart Fortwo Brabus has prepared a special engine based on a stock turbo engine, its power is 109 hp with a thrust of 170 Nm.

    The diesel has not yet been introduced, nor has the new Smart Roadster been introduced, but the company says that this is a matter of time. Another positive development is the disappearance of the hated robot, which, according to the owners, worked disgustingly, blunted and threw gears at its own discretion. Instead, a five-speed manual gearbox is installed as standard, as in a normal car. As an option, Smart has a renoshny robot with two DCT clutches, but for a stock car it will be installed for a surcharge of a thousand euros.

    Big technology for a small Smart

    Few people expect high speed from such a kid.

    Even the stock Smart is exciting by default, and the layout dictates this. Whatever motor is hiding above the rear axle, a rear-wheel drive and rear-engined car can already provide a sufficient amount of pleasure if you know how to properly use these benefits of civilization. At Smart Fortwo Brabus all this is expressed in five times the size. Not only is the turbine engine itself more powerful and responsive, all the Brabus paraphernalia in the cabin, these two unique exhausts sticking out from under the branded body kit, make the tuned car much more attractive. The Brabus cabin is distinguished by sporty pedals, Brabus logos scattered here and there and the letters B, and what about the dial tachometer, arranged with an analog clock! It was installed in the left corner of the front panel and can be rotated so that there is as little glare as possible. A kind of retro spirit is introduced not only by a barometer-tachometer-clock, but also by an interestingly executed climate control unit. Not only was it inscribed in a soft rectangle with rounded edges, but also the temperature indicators are located under a real magnifying glass. The speedometer itself with the on-board computer display (it has become not monochrome, as before, but full-color and perfectly readable) is located directly on the front panel, like a shell scene in green theaters in every park of culture and recreation. The spirit is captivating.

    Trunk only for the most necessary purchases

    Smart Fortwo Brabus can shoot from a standstill almost like a Porsche, squealing tires, wedged into turns with incredible accuracy. This was achieved thanks to the special function of the Race Start robotic gear box, and it is activated without turning off the traction control, so you can be calm about the behavior of the machine after a crazy start. Everything's under control. However, there are some downsides to this as well. It's one thing - a fun and incendiary test drive for an hour and a half, another thing when the owner has to live with this four-wheeled joker. Because the new Smart Fortwo Brabus can only exist in two modes - crazy and semi-crazy.

    Judge for yourself. From the point of view of practicality, any Smart has a disastrously little space in the cabin and it has a trunk of only 150 liters, and the engine is hidden under the trunk floor. To get to it, you need to unload the luggage, remove the bottom of the cargo compartment (although this is done simply, plastic screws are provided for this and it will not take much time), check the oil level in the engine and in the gearbox, assemble everything in a traveling state. What is the outlook for the modern comfort lover? The car rides almost in a sporty way, it is controlled in the same way, and the suspension is quite stiff. Therefore, potential buyers of bright red Smart Fortwo Brabus should evaluate their driving skills, especially on slippery roads. Even the usual Smart requires careful dosage of gas and careful braking, and Brabus doubly so.

    Yet once you are behind the wheel of a Brabus Smart at least once, it is impossible not to fall in love with him. The dynamics, from the point of view of the technical characteristics of an ordinary car, cannot be called stunning. It's about 9 seconds to a hundred. But when you sit in this capsule and essentially control only your body, the sensations are drastically aggravated. Moreover, the number 210 on the speedometer is not a declaration of intent, but the real possibilities of this tiny projectile. Let's not forget that track drills, sudden shifts and corner entry at 180 km/h are rather rare exceptions for this car. Its main task is to park on three square meters and leave the parking lot with axle boxes, leaving the neighbors in the parking lot stunned by such impudence with their mouths open. And this task Smart Fortwo Brabus performs perfectly. In Bottrop, where Brabuses are assembled, they set the task of bringing this tiny little car to the limit, and if the client is not afraid of the price for which you can buy an S-Class Mercedes with good mileage, then he will receive his dose of pleasure from the Brabus Smart.
