  • The first stage is the assembly of the frame base of the future homemade snowmobile. For work you will need steel corners (size - 50 x 36 cm) or steel sheets (thickness - at least 2 mm). The middle part of the structure is made from the corners, and the front and back are made from sheets.

Advice. To give the necessary rigidity to the structure, the metal is bent at an angle of 90 degrees.

  • Carefully make two through holes to accommodate the track shaft and track wheel guides (tensioners are installed on both sides of the side members).

Important! Front device specifically designed to tension the second stage idler, it also helps in adjusting the track itself.

  • Special brackets are carefully welded to the bottom of the side members (they are attached at the same distance from each other), support rollers are installed in their open grooves.
  • The rollers (in rubber covers) are placed on five axes, each of which is attached to the underside of the open grooves.
  • Between each of the elements special bushings made of duralumin are installed (they are made from a suitable pipe).

Advice. In order not to waste time making rollers and axles for them, they can be borrowed from old equipment for digging up potatoes.

  • The bracket axles themselves are secured using nuts and locknuts (they are designed to strengthen the snowmobile frame and hold the side members at a certain distance from each other).
  • Three metal corners are used to make racks for attaching the prepared chainsaw gearbox, and install the intermediate shaft of the chain drive.
  • A seat for the user is installed on the prepared frame (for these purposes, use a suitable box or Car seat), it is fixed in the area between the middle and rear parts of the structure.

Chainsaw snowmobile

  • A hole is made in the front section of the frame to accommodate the steering wheel; it is made from a pipe with welded control handles.
  • Metal gussets are installed in the places where the snowmobile racks are attached (they strengthen the structure, make it stronger and more reliable).

  • A snowmobile drive shaft is made from a metal pipe, and a special round flange is inserted into it for attaching gears.

A walk-behind tractor is another option for equipment that is used in the process of making a snowmobile with your own hands. Its design practically does not need to be altered, since it is initially multifunctional.

The idea of ​​making a snowmobile


In general, the idea came in the summer to make winter transport for driving, initially I wanted to make a snowmobile with a caterpillar, but I realized that I couldn’t take it out due to money and the right tools in the garage, so it was decided to make a mini snowmobile with rear wheel from a scooter with welded corners, started building on September 27, 2017.


Snowmobile design

Front ski

I found a piece of old plastic pipe and cut it in half, heating it with a torch and straightening it, after which I took 2 corners, welded them together, welded a spout in front and placed it in the middle of the pipe, after which I tightened it with screws.

Transfer to Wheel

I took it from a scooter at 8 and welded the sprockets from the Minsk motorcycle there, the driven one at 41 and the drive at 15,
but after one month of construction they offered to sell me a wheel with sprockets, a chain and a chainsaw, I decided to sell it because the extra money wouldn’t hurt in my workshop. In the end, I found a wheel from a garden cart, I welded corners to it, and then made an intermediate shaft , but it turned out to be a bad idea, since it was not possible to set the chain and the chain simply fell off, in the end I removed the intermediate shaft and installed stars from Izha, Leading-9, Driven-43, the gear ratio turned out to be 4.7, after testing it showed that this gear ratio Enough to pull 3 people.

Frame and attachments

I made the frame from what was in my garage, the remains of profiles, pipes of various diameters, and angles.
On a piece of paper I sketched out drawings of what my mini snowmobile should look like, but without any dimensions, the frame was welded by eye, adjusted in the garage itself, I welded everything myself, the side supports were old children's skis, a friend gave them to me, so I didn't have to I came up with something and made it from ready-made ones, I secured the skis with self-tapping screws, but after the tests the skis tore out and I had to put them on M4 bolts.


The seat was covered with a rag, but then I decided to cover it with leatherette.


The throttle handle was taken from the Izh Planet 3 motorcycle, the tank from the Druzhba 4 chainsaw, but after the first test I decided that I needed to attach a tow bar for riding with friends on the ice, but I realized that it’s not very good to feed friends with snow from behind because on their Sometimes I find myself in the same place, I have attached a small shield.

The project and its future

On given time the project is being finalized and is actively used by me on weekends for good time conduction, this snowmobile travels current along dense snow ice and loose snow.

Steel corners measuring 3 x 3 cm can be used as stands for making a snowmobile. They are connected by steel crossbars. The result is a not very large portal. To create a platform, it is recommended to connect a sheet of steel 2 mm thick using spot welding to its front part and middle right side vehicle design. This is where the gearbox of our chainsaw and the chain drive shaft will be placed in the future.

It is recommended to mount a small module on a fragment of the arch of the rear portal and the middle of the car, which will become a good support for the seat.

The connection between the front frame and the front axle cross member is ensured using a beam. As a connecting element in in this case a standard water pipe with a radius of at least 1.5 cm protrudes.

At the end of this pipe, the steering ski bushings are welded, and a stand is mounted in the middle of it. The latter will act as an engine subframe.

Please note that at the joints of the racks it is additionally recommended to use steel gussets 2 mm thick. This will make the vehicle reliable and durable even in harsh winters.

A flange with special holes for fixing the gears is placed on top of it. At the end of the drive shaft, pin tips are pressed in and welded using the contact welding method. In addition, they must be machined for bearings.

Racks

For the middle part, corners 50x63 mm made of hardened steel are used, the front and rear are made of S2 steel with a flange at an angle of 90°. The racks are made from 30x30 mm corners and connected by metal crossbars. The result should be a structure in the form of a small portal. A platform is required for the mounting location of the chain saw gearbox and the chain drive shaft. Sheet steel of the required size is selected, usually 2-3 mm thick, and welded to the center of the right side of the module and the portal. At the back of the portal and at the same time in the middle of the module, a place is formed for the seat, which is subsequently made from boards and fabric or removed ready-made from old technology


The front spar and the drive axle traverse are installed to the beam, which is a standard water pipe with a radius of 0.75 mm. Steering ski bushings are welded at both ends, and a stand for the engine subframe is welded in the center. The mounting points for the supports are reinforced with 2-mm metal gussets for strength and stability of the structure.

Caterpillar

A mechanism from the Buran unit is used as a caterpillar, the belt is shortened by 0.75-1 m. Gears gear transmission planted on transverse shafts, then the canvas is laid. The caterpillar gear is made from a nylon sheet measuring 15 mm.

Engine

The snowmobile engine is the most important component that affects the operation of the entire self-propelled vehicles. Therefore, experts recommend using power plant from a Shtil chainsaw with an engine power of 1.5-3 kW. The motor is mounted on a stable support of the cross beam. The gearbox is rotated 180°, fixed on the platform, and the intermediate shaft of the 2-speed transmission is also mounted. The fuel tank is installed on top.

Steering

Control - steering on support-steering skis. The support arms are rigidly connected to the steering shaft bipod. The steering wheel is two-handed, with a gas handle mounted on the right side.

It is clear that this should not be a metal-plastic pipe, but a metal one. Weld the steering wheel bushing at the end, and attach the stand in the middle. This stand will play the role of a subframe for the engine.

Be sure to attach small stiffening ribs in the form of gussets in the places where the racks are attached. This is necessary to strengthen the structure and provide it with a longer service life.
