Concern "Volkswagen Group", aka Volkswagen Konzern, Volkswagen Group or VW Group is a group automobile enterprises, among which Volkswagen AG is considered the parent company. The headquarters of the Volkswagen Group is located in Wolfsburg. With the owners of the VW Group, not everything was unequivocally clear until 2012. Until then, Porsche SE had owned 50.73% of the shares of Volkswagen AG, although the latter owned 100% of the shares of Porsche GmbH. Porsche is now wholly owned by the VW Group.

Martin Winterkorn is the head of Volkswgaen AG and also the Chairman of the Management Board of Porsche SE.

The Volkswagen Group includes 342 companies, but not all of them are engaged in auto production: many of them simply provide services related to the production of cars. The beginning of the story

So, before talking about the composition of the Volkswagen concern, it is worth briefly telling about its history. Its creator is Ferdinand Porsche. In 1938, the first VW plant was built. Naturally, it was in Wolfsburg.

In 1960, on August 22, an LLC called Volkswagen Plants appeared. After the FRG was founded, this society became owned and the name was changed. On the traditional, which remains unchanged to this day. After that, Volkswagen AG began to engage not only in the manufacture of cars and motorcycles, but also in the provision of logistics and financial services. Moreover, this concern even had a small food production enterprise.

Further activities

The nineties were difficult years for many countries. Germany was no exception, and the concern - even more so. Volkswagen cars continued to be popular, but the company still experienced certain difficulties. But Ferdinand Piech, hired as a crisis manager, literally saved the firm. Until 2015, he led the financial processes. And it was this man who decided to expand the Volkswagen concern. The composition that we know today could not exist if Piech were not so enterprising and far-sighted.

In the late nineties, the company became even more famous, since then division of Volkswagen Bentley, which made Rolls-Royce cars. Agreement with Suzuki

The brands of the Volkswagen concern are diverse, but many were surprised by the fact that in December 2009 the German company decided to create an alliance with the Japanese company Suzuki. But nothing much happened. The concerns simply exchanged shares (1/5 of all shares went to the German company Japanese company). And then they made an announcement for a joint development special cars, which can be safely classified as environmentally friendly. But the alliance did not last long. Not even two years had passed before the press officially announced that the companies had decided to break off business relations. It happened in 2011, in September.

Units established in the 20th century

The Volkswagen concern is the largest in Germany. Its main division is considered to be Volkswagen itself, which produces high-quality passenger cars. This group is not registered as a child joint-stock company. This company reports directly to the management of the concern itself.

One of the most popular brands is also "Audi". Her Wolfsburg concern bought from Daimler-Benz a very long time ago - in 1964, to be more precise. Then, another company entered the Audi Division, bought five years later, in 1969. And it was NSU Motorenwerke. True, it did not exist on its own for so long - only until 1977.

In 1986 a new acquisition was made. The concern bought Seat (53 percent). To date, the Wolfsburg Corporation owns 99.99% of all these shares. That is, in fact, the Spanish company became the property of the German concern. Then, in 1991, VW also bought Skoda.

Divisions that arose in the late 90s

Separately, I would like to say about Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. This is an independent division, whose activities are controlled by the VW Group. However, it became such only after 1995, thanks to the efforts of the previous chairman of the board of the group, who was Bernd Weideman. Prior to this, the current division was part of the VW Group. Today it produces tractors, buses and minibuses.

In 1998, the concern acquired a company that is one that produces truly luxurious and rich cars. And it's a Bentley. The German concern acquired the British company together with Rolls-Royce, which was then sold to BMW (as described above).

Immediately after the Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini were acquired. Italian company It was not the Volkswagen concern itself that bought it, but its subsidiary Audi. 1998 was remembered for really weighty and significant transactions.

Other divisions

Volkswagen cars are known all over the world. The magnate produces really good, high-quality, reliable, comfortable and beautiful Cars. But the concern also sells dump trucks, buses, trucks, tractors and diesel engines. They are produced by Scania AB, which VW Group bought in 2009. About 71 percent of the company's shares belong to the Wolfsburg concern.

Still no less well-known manufacturer truck tractors, as well as other vehicles - this is MAN AG. Its controlling stake is also owned by a German company, and has been for five years now.

Now about Porsche. It was mentioned at the beginning, but it is worth returning to this topic. 49.9% of the shares of this company belonged to the VW Group in 2009. Then negotiations were held on the merger of these two powerful companies into a single entity. But this did not happen. VW Group still bought Porsche. Thus, the popular manufacturer became the 12th brand in the group. The purchase cost the Wolfsburg representatives almost 4.5 billion euros. I also had to “attach” one of my shares (ordinary) from above.

The company also owns the most popular Motor manufacturer Holding S.p.A.) and ItalDesign Giugiaro. It was also bought not by the VW Group, but by Lamborghini. The rest of the shares (9.9%) continued to be the property of the relatives of Giorgetto Giugiaro (one of the founders of the atelier).

Case 2015

In September last year, there was a major scandal around the concern "Volkswagen". Then it turned out that about 11 million cars running on diesel units had software that was activated during testing. This software significantly reduced the amount of harmful gases emitted into the atmosphere. It turned out that the level of emitted nitrogen oxides is actually very high. This scandal around the concern "Volkswagen" flared up very quickly. The company has pleaded not guilty.

This software was installed on models with TDI units (series 288, 189 and 188). Cars were produced for 7 incomplete years - from 2008 to 2015. Such “defective” models turned out to be the well-known “Golfs” of the sixth generation, “Trade Winds” (seventh), as well as “Tiguan”, “Jetta”, Beetle and even “Audi A3”.

The breach was discovered while a research team at West Virginia University was studying the composition of exhaust gases that were released into the atmosphere while driving.

Fine and punishment

Naturally, a fine was imposed on the Volkswagen concern for this. In total, the amount amounted to about 18 billion dollars. The calculation was made based on the number of cars. And the amount to be paid for one “defective” car is approximately $37,500. Yes, a considerable fine was awarded to the Volkswagen concern.

Another of the consequences can be noted a significant decrease in prices set for the shares of the concern. It is worth noting that Adolf Hitler directly had a hand in developing the concept of the future car. He sketched a sketch of the future beetle and asked for the name of the designer who would take up the development of this auto-ombile. Then Jacob Werlin, who was at that meeting a representative of Daimler-Benz and suggested that Ferdinand Porsche take up the development of the car. On the same day, the name "Volks-Wagen" was first uttered, which means "people's car" in Russian.

The first drawings of the beetle

After quite a bit of time, in January 1934, Porsche brought drawings of the ordered car to the German Reich Chancellery. It was developed on the basis of the Porsche Typ 60 and already in June of the same year, a contract was signed to develop three new Volkswagen prototypes. Only 20 thousand Reichsmarks were allocated per month for the project, and the development period was limited to 10 months.
The requirements for the car were quite stringent and at the same time precise:

Development time has been extended

Despite the fact that the car was already practically developed on paper and ready for serial launch, new government requirements have made their own adjustments. The first prototypes were ready only in September 1936 and it took 2 years to develop the prototypes. However, despite this, the first four-door car from Volkswagen and a two-door convertible were born and a further 30 prototypes were ordered, which were subsequently produced and assembled at the Daimler-Benz plant.
Testing of cars was carried out by the trade union organization "German Labor Front". The same organization also made a decision regarding the suitability of the car for use.

Construction of the Volkswagen plant

It all started with the fact that on May 28, 1937, a company was founded, the name of which could be translated into Russian, as LLC for the preparation of the German People's Car. A year later, not far from the city of Fallersleben, in 1938, the first stone of the plant was laid, which will produce cars that will later receive the title of the most reliable and affordable. In September of the same year, the plant was renamed Volkswagen GmbH.


A very large amount of money was invested in the construction of this plant by the KdF (Kraft durch Freude) company, and it was in her honor that the cars of the future, at the suggestion of Adolf Hitler, began to be called KdF-Wagen.
Unfortunately the second World War, which began literally a year later, confused the plans of industrialists, and the new plant managed to produce only two car models that were marked V38 and V39s. The first model was a trial, but the second was already a demonstration, and both of these cars have changed quite a lot compared to the first sketches. have been upgraded door handles and openings, and also added two rear windows in the car. This "people's car" had every chance of gaining immense popularity, but unfortunately, the plant received a huge flow of military orders and the development of Volkswagen went in a slightly different direction.

Volkswagen during World War II


Since the Volkswagen plant was the newest at that time, a variety of types were produced there during the war. military equipment, ranging from vehicles designed to deliver ammunition and personnel, and ending even with military developments of amphibious vehicles. However, during the liberation part of the war, in 1946, this plant was destroyed almost to the ground.
American air raids practically left no stone unturned from the factory building, and after the war it had to be restored. England was engaged in this, in whose zone of influence the city of Wolfsburg fell after the war, which was originally built as working settlements for the plant. After the restoration, England ordered 20,000 cars from this plant, but they did not begin to be mass-produced until many years later.

The first sights of foreigners on Volkswagen

The new car from Volkswagen attracted attention in Hannover at the export fair. In fact, it is this moment that should be considered a turning point in the fate of the Volkswagen concern. Orders for the production of cars from abroad rained down, which showed really high quality car presented at the fair.
Of course, first of all, residents of Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland and other countries turned to the people's car from Germany, but later car became popular all over the world.

Change of leadership

In 1948 CEO Volkswagen became Heinrich Nordhoff. Along with him, the top management also changed and it now consisted entirely of engineers who had both international experience and out-of-the-box thinking. It was this approach that made it possible to modernize the current car models produced at the restored plant and make them even better.
The emergence of a new top has also made such changes in the activities of the concern as the emergence of a network technical stations and car service centers. At the same time, a network for selling cars to the west was being established, and the management did not lose, relying on the export of cars.
As a result, about 15 thousand cars were sold on the domestic market by the end of 1948, but the export market was literally full of them - about 50,000 cars were sold.

The plant returns to German control

Somewhat later, the time of British control over the plant came to an end and in September 1948 the plant completely came under the control of the FRG.
This stage of the existence of the plant and the concern as a whole should be characterized by intensive development, an increase in the level of sales and an improvement in the quality of car production.
Hard work and an extraordinary approach to the production of cars has paid off. 27 years after the complete destruction of the plant and the end of World War II, the Volkswagen Beetle has broken a sales record. Prior to that, the Ford Model T held the championship.

The prototype of the modern "Transporter"

In the 1950s, the first model entered mass production. truck produced by Volkswagen. Even then, in its concept, it was very reminiscent of a modern Transporter and was inferior to it only in beauty and power. Since the car was constantly modernized and improved, it continued to gain immense popularity from year to year. Since the new management of the concern was very serious about the export of cars, over time a whole network was opened subsidiaries worldwide. It took a lot to build the enterprise. Money. It was decided to borrow them from the same people for whom the cars were intended. People purchased bonds, which were later planned to be considered as collateral for cars issued in the future. The good deed did not become a reality, very few managed to get a “four-wheeled friend”. With the outbreak of hostilities, the production of cars was curtailed.

Volkswagen rebirth

Perhaps our contemporaries would not have known about the existence Volkswagen brands if after the war the plant passed into the hands of the Americans. And there was such a possibility. The second foreign representative office of Volkswagen opened in the south of the African continent. The French branch appeared in 1960. Two years later, the company celebrated a significant event - the sale of the millionth Beetle.

Compact cheap cars traveled all over the planet, while the demand for them did not decrease. Therefore, more and more representative offices were opened. In the early 70s, a Mexican plant in Pueblo was launched, and then an enterprise in Brussels.

For a long "life" machines have been repeatedly upgraded. But they always retained their original style. The four-cylinder boxer engine was always located at the rear.
