Special sealant for liqui moly cooling system. Sealant for car radiator

Special sealant for liqui moly cooling system. Sealant for car radiator

The radiators of the cooling system and the interior heater sometimes leak. There is a justification for this: large temperature differences contribute to the development of thermal fatigue processes in thin-walled tubes. The result is the appearance of microcracks through which liquid begins to ooze. It is best to replace the defective part. But if the service is far away, but you need to go?

An old, old recipe - to carry a package of dry mustard with you. Its powder, added to antifreeze, is able to temporarily reduce or even eliminate small leaks. However, after that it is necessary to thoroughly rinse the cooling system, because mustard can clog not only microcracks, but also the cooling channels themselves, the radiator tubes, and especially the stoves! Fortunately, today there are more modern preparations - and we will evaluate them.

We took six different formulations. It is curious that we could not find standard methods for checking the sealants of the cooling system - they simply do not exist! It doesn't matter, we'll create our own, Zarulevskaya! Since the main task of sealants is to close leaks from micro-holes, a control element was inserted into the pipeline between the thermostat and the radiator, namely the hollow steel tube with four calibrated holes - 0.3; 0.5; 0.8 and 1.0 mm. First, let's estimate for each sealant the time during which it "closes the hole".

We will postpone life tests until better times, limiting ourselves to a dozen engine hours for each train. If the leak does not resume, set off. In addition, we will evaluate the effect of sealants on the elements of the cooling system: does the preparation settle on the walls, does the hydraulic resistance change, etc.

All six participants coped with the task, but in very different ways. If BBF and Liqui Moly closed the holes in turn - according to the diameter, then, for example, Gunk “thought” for a long time: even the smallest hole was tightened only after 2 minutes 34 seconds. But then all three remaining ones closed almost simultaneously: their time was from 3 minutes 34 seconds to 4 minutes 5 seconds. Moreover, for some reason, the first to stop flowing from the largest hole - 1.0 mm!

K-Seal, a multifunctional long-lasting sealant, sealed only three smaller holes relatively quickly and reliably. The fourth clogged for a very long time - 6 minutes 20 seconds. Hi-Gear behaved even more interestingly. All openings are closed record speed- in 1 minute 58 seconds! But after three minutes ... suddenly large holes opened up again - 0.7 and 1.0 mm. The leak finally stopped only after 10 minutes, and during this time we added antifreeze to the tank twice.

Fillinn never closed the millimeter hole. 20 minutes after the start of the tests, we got tired of pouring from empty to empty, and we turned off the engine. Holes of a smaller diameter were tightened, but also in their own way: the longest flow was from a hole of 0.5 mm - more than 10 minutes. Moreover, 0.7 mm by this time had long been closed.

And what is the long-term effect of sealants? Five of them (Fillinn, for the reasons mentioned above, did not take part in long-term tests) honestly defended 10 bench engine hours. We did not see any changes in the thermal regime of the engines. The stoves were heated, the faucets opened and closed, the thermostats worked normally.

Opening, pouring and weighing the control elements - radiators, taps and thermostats - did not reveal miracles. Their mass has increased, hydraulic resistance has increased after the application of all compositions. More others - after Fillinn, Hi-Gear and Gunk. In general, this was to be expected, judging by the initial type of preparations. But even with such deposits, the cooling systems remained operational.

More funny moments. When draining antifreeze, only the composition of Hi-Gear created problems. He healed all the holes so well that, turning drain plug, we did not wait for the usual jet. I had to pry with a screwdriver. Deposits were also observed on the pump impeller and in the channels of the block. And after draining the antifreeze with Liqui Moly sealant, the bottom of the vessel was decorated with colored sparkles - as if the tinsel from the Christmas tree was crumbling.

So, can you count on the sealants of the cooling system? The ones we tested have proven to work. Even Fillinn, which failed to cope with a hole of 1 mm, steadily healed holes of a smaller diameter. But a millimeter is a lot, usually microcracks are much smaller.

But do not forget: these compounds have a purely emergency purpose. It is not worth using them for prevention - there is no sense, except for extra deposits. And at the first opportunity, we advise you to exchange defective parts for new ones.

Drivers often apply sealant to the cooling system to stop leaks. In engines, strong temperature drops occur, which is why thermal fatigue processes develop in thin-walled pipes: parts wear out, microcracks are formed that pass.

The generated thermal energy is absorbed by the cooling system by 30%. A significant load is formed, leading to rapid wear and periodic breakdowns. The radiator, connecting pipes are destroyed. Layers accumulate on the internal surfaces: the results of corrosion of metal parts, deposits of fats, oils, the results of chemical reactions of antifreeze.

Due to deposits on the walls of the equipment, heat exchange processes are disturbed, heat transfer decreases, as a result, the engine is poorly cooled, which results in excessive fuel consumption. Then cracks form in the nozzles, gradually increasing in size, liquid begins to flow.

Of course, a damaged part, but it is cheaper to carry out preventive maintenance, use a liquid sealant. Especially good sealant for emergency assistance when you need to at least get to the garage.

For long service system, you need to keep it clean, monitor the tightness, fill in the amount of liquid required by the manufacturer. Special cleaners eliminate deposits, form protective film preventing crack growth. Liquid leakage is effectively combated by a sealant made for engine cooling equipment.

Review of the best sealants

Fill Inn

sealant Russian production commissioned by PRIDE USA, who controls the process. Works immediately upon entering the system. Copes well with small cracks although not very fast. The tool is relatively inexpensive - about 60 rubles.

Flaws:

  • does not cope well with cracks of 1 mm, therefore it is not recommended for serious damage;
  • many residual deposits.

Bizol

A dispersed preparation that isolates leaks with high quality, reliably sealing the cooling system. Excellent for protecting radiator batteries made of aluminum alloys.

wurst

Wurst is recommended for cars that have been in operation for more than 15 years, in the absence of a strainer. Wurst is suitable for closed systems, used to eliminate leaks in cylinder block gaskets, sealant for cooling system pipes, stops leaks in pipe connections.

Bar's Leaks

Sealant for small cracks, holes, effectively stops the flow of fluid, protecting the cooling system from possible corrosion. Bar's Leaks is also used to eliminate external defects. Can be applied with various materials. A very high quality tool.

Gunk Radiator Sealer Super

The product, of a dense consistency, quickly hardens, will protect your radiator, the entire cooling system for a long time. Gunk is a reliable drug. The emulsion acts effectively, rather quickly, closing holes of different diameters. However, there is a drawback: a high proportion of deposits, it is not recommended to use with worn radiators.

Hi-Gear Stop Leak (Gold Formula)

Sealant made in the USA. Hi-Gear is slow but highly efficient, even plugging drain holes.

Flaws:

  • the holes close intermittently, abruptly: the leak stops, then resumes, is eliminated again; the final closure occurs after leaving the antifreeze tank;
  • it is required to add antifreeze after applying the sealant;
  • Gear has a high level of pollution.

K-seal

American-made sealant, thick, called "long-playing". After it, according to the manufacturer, it is not required to replace parts, they will last for a long time. The composition includes copper powder, which forms reliable traffic jams. Effectively patches cracks, although large holes do not heal quickly enough.

Advantages:

  • profitability due to high-quality sealing of cracks;
  • a small amount of deposits.

The disadvantage is the high cost, about 430 rubles.

Felix

The liquid preparation quickly stops the radiator leak, preventing the appearance of new cracks. Felix is neutral to different materials used in equipment: to rubber, metals, alloys.

It hardens only at the point of leakage, without clogging the radiator tubes. Compatible with ethylene glycol based fluids. The price is about 90 rubles.

Liqui Moly

Means of German production, contains metal, the most effective. Liqui Moly leads the way in crack closing speed, eliminating leaks that do not recur after. It has average level pollution, after draining the sediment shines with metal particles. The price is about 200 rubles.

Advantage - the greatest efficiency among sealants.

BBF Super

The leader among sealants is a tool, according to motorists, an excellent drug. BBF fills cracks consistently, quickly, effectively eliminating leaks. After opening, neatly made polymer plugs are found in the places of cracks. The cost is about 55 rubles, which is very inexpensive among analogues.

Advantage:

  • a small amount of deposits;
  • the best combination of price and quality among the named preparations.

Means for the prevention of the cooling system

Liqui Moly

Liqui Moly effectively removes dirt, scale, which improves heat transfer. It is universal, suitable for almost any cooling system. The manufacturer recommends using the drug for prevention on the eve of each coolant change.

Most motorists at least once, but faced with the problem of the current radiator. Car owners will agree that a coolant leak is an unpleasant situation. A popular remedy for this trouble is a sealant for a car radiator. Reviews about these funds are different, as are the funds themselves. Therefore, you should find out which drug should be used.

What is this remedy?

This is a special mixture that has unique properties to eliminate small cracks and various holes in the radiator and resembles a pasty or viscous composition. It can be based on oligomers or various polymers.

The sealing layer is formed on the connecting seams.

This may occur as a result of the curing processes of the polymer base or due to solvent evaporation. In addition, there are mixtures where no changes occur. For different situations suitable radiator sealant. Reviews and types of funds - further in our article.

Powder compositions for the radiator

So, the very first is the composition in the form of a powder. How to use it? Very simple. The powder is poured directly into the radiator, and the indications for use are even a slight leak. Car owners with experience do not use newfangled things, but prefer the old grandfather method - this is mustard, naturally, dry, in powder. In addition, cigarette tobacco is also suitable. There is in nature a more exotic option for fixing a leak.

Among the advantages of dry preparations are wide availability, low cost compared to any other similar product on the market.

Minus - a small depth of defects that such a sealant for a car radiator can eliminate.

Reviews experienced motorists indicate that dry sealant will cope with a crack up to 1 mm. The second minus is that they are sealed, or rather, they are even clogged not only problem areas, but also any channels directly in the heating system.

Liquid mixtures

This is the second type of drugs. It is based on various polymeric substances with a minimum proportion of metals. The main function of these compounds is to eliminate leaks in the engine block, and also only partially eliminate problems in the radiator cavity.

Polymers, as can be seen from their properties and characteristics, cling to bumps and sharp edges. Defective elements seem to be enveloped. The main advantage of using these sealants is that the substance is constantly in the coolant. If it is necessary to remove, then simply drain the coolant and liquid sealant for the radiator will flow out with it. Experienced reviews say that such compositions are not much different from dry ones and are not able to cope with large holes.

New drugs based on polymer fibers

At the heart of these materials for the "treatment" of radiators are special fibers. It is they that affect the adhesion of the drug particles between the surfaces of the crack, as well as among themselves. Motorists have already fallen in love with a polymer sealant for a car radiator. Reviews about it speak for themselves - the substance patches the hole in just a few minutes, and the size of the "wound" can reach two or more millimeters.

How to use: instruction manual

Many people make one mistake when using these compositions. This happens due to ignorance of the main functional component. But the function of sealants is very, very simple - to completely reduce coolant leaks during temporary use. Unfortunately, you won't be able to use radiator sealant forever. Reviews of motorists agree that on the action of the drug you can only get to the nearest service.

Operation may look like this - the driver pours the contents of the tube or bottle into the radiator, and then, after the car has driven into the garage or parking lot, it is necessary to immediately drain the coolant and thoroughly flush the system.

So, if it was possible to diagnose, and this can be both while driving and during parking, it is necessary to turn off the engine and allow the coolant to cool sufficiently. Then it is recommended to inspect the part for damage. To drain the liquid, it is better to put any suitable container under the radiator.

Do not open the radiator cap when the antifreeze is still hot. This may result in severe burns.

If the driver has any sealant, then it should be immediately poured or poured into the system according to the instructions. Then after a few minutes you can start the engine again. Next, the serviceability is checked and after nothing else flows anywhere, you can start moving.

Possible problems when using

If a low-quality or fake sealant for the Hi-Gear radiator was purchased (reviews from those who used it indicate the presence of fakes on the market), then in addition to leakage, you can get another not very pleasant “bonus”. The drug can clog thin channels in the radiator. The operation of the cooling system will be impaired, which will then lead to overheating, overloading or, ultimately, engine failure.

In addition, the radiator will definitely clog. saloon stove. Heat will either completely stop flowing into the cabin, or the stove will work with very low efficiency. The pump may also fail. And the thermostat often breaks. This will completely disrupt the operation of the power unit.

But all of the above can only be due to inattention. Therefore, when choosing a drug, it is necessary to inspect it for counterfeit goods or get competent advice from the seller.

Market Review

The modern automotive chemicals market offers many different tubes and bottles. Each manufacturer in advertising for the product convinces - it is necessary to purchase this, because in this tool maximum efficiency. Several brands are popular today. It would be nice to find out if this or that sealant for a car radiator is really so effective. Reviews will help in this difficult matter.

Not the worst, but not luxury either: Hi-Gear

It is a fairly popular drug domestic market. According to the label, it's made in the USA. Its cost is about 200 rubles. It is a blue-green thick mixture. The manufacturer recommends using the composition not just for repairs, but for complex and serious repair work By car radiators. The active substance is a polymer. It is able to eliminate even serious holes. But, as tests by independent experts show, this takes a lot of time.

If the hole is more than 1 mm, then there is no need to make plans that the repair will take a couple of minutes. Often through such an opening before the drug begins to act. For reliability, it is better to carry two cans at once. When working, you should prepare for all kinds of consequences, such as a clogged drain hole or a radiator plug. What do car enthusiasts say who have used Hi-Gear Radiator Sealant? Reviews are different and are divided into two categories - negative and positive.

After use, car owners had to change the thermostat and sensors, pump and other parts of the cooling system. Others state that they have been using this sealant for about 2 years and are satisfied with the result.

ABRO

All products of this American brand are positioned as professional. They produce powdered products and liquid ABRO radiator sealant. Reviews - positive, it really works and moreover quickly enough. The main thing is to strictly follow the manufacturer's instructions in everything. But after use, you need to pour it out of the system and rinse everything thoroughly - the channels in the CO are clogged.

Among the auto chemicals of this brand, there is also a dry powder sealant for the ABRO radiator. Reviews about him are the same. However, the agent must also be removed, otherwise the channels will become clogged. Advantages - speed of work, elimination of leaks up to 2 liters per minute, affordable price.

Mannol

This is another drug from a German manufacturer. According to the manufacturer, the substances will start working within 10 minutes after power unit warm up to operating temperature. The manufacturer does not talk about any unique properties of this product. This is an average sealant for a car radiator. Reviews "Manol" collects neutral. They say the liquid preparation is much better than analogues from famous brands. The tool does not clog the channels and after it there are no deposits.

Liqui Moly

There is not much to say about this brand. It's famous German manufacturer lubricants.

But not only those. For a long time and successfully produced all automotive chemicals. Many positions are used not only by ordinary motorists, but also by professionals.

The first product is Kuher Dichter. In inexpensive means, manufacturers may well slip mustard on a gullible buyer, but not here. This drug, according to the manufacturer, has absolutely no disadvantages and does not change the properties of antifreeze.

The tool is a liquid with metallic "sparkles". They move through the cooling system without settling on the inner walls and other elements until they find damage. This drug does not clog channels, it can enter the most hard-to-reach places, does not interfere with the operation of the pump, thermostat, sensors.

Liqui Moly Radiator Sealant: reviews

As expected, motorists do not discount the brand. Yes, this product works, but experienced drivers prefer iron radiator repair. No matter how the manufacturer says, but still the channels are clogged. german liquid only works on microcracks with warm or even hot antifreeze. The price is not very affordable (about 1000 rubles versus 500 for analogues from other manufacturers), it works worse than the sealant for the Manol radiator, reviews of which indicate better results.

The best of the best

So what to choose? All experts unanimously say that it is worth giving preference to BBF products. This is not an imported brand, but a domestic one. This is real efficiency. After a few minutes, cracks up to 0.5 millimeters in size close tightly.

This composition also eliminates hard cracks - this takes up to three minutes. Another advantage - affordable price. What do reviews say about sealant for a car radiator? "Lada Kalina" (namely, the product was tested on this car) was able to drive about 500 kilometers with a broken radiator.

Washing after sealant

The channels of the system tend to clog after the use of these funds. And then the question arises of how to flush the radiator? For this, special flushes are sold.

So, you can purchase "Reagent 3000". It should be poured into the old liquid, and after 150 hours it will completely clean the cooling system. Another similar product is offered by Hi-Gear. The manufacturer assures that after 7 minutes this mixture will wash everything off. Step-up is a sulfate-based preparation, diluted with water.

Folk remedies for washing

If it is not possible to purchase a factory flush, you can use improvised means. Previously, when there were no car chemistry, vinegar, whey and citric acid were used.

When using vinegar, a solution of 0.5 liters of vinegar per 10 liters is required. water. old fluid merges, and in its place a solution of vinegar and water is poured. Then the engine is started, brought to operating temperatures, turned off and left for 8 hours. After draining the solution, the radiator and cooling system should be washed with distilled water and antifreeze can be poured. If the sealant has clogged the system very badly, then you may have to clean it mechanically or pour pure vinegar.

If you use citric acid, then you should take 100 grams of powder.

With this mixture, you need to ride for about six days. Next, the liquid is drained, and the remaining water and citric acid washed off with distilled water.

Serum can also be used. First of all, the product should be filtered to remove the sediment. To clean the system with this tool, you need to drive no more than 1.5 thousand kilometers. The temperature and degree of contamination should be controlled. After cleaning, the entire system is also washed with distilled water.

As for factory flushes, judging by the reviews, they clog the system no worse than any sealant. Therefore, it is not worth getting carried away with them.

Sealant or repair?

You shouldn't think that good remedy It's a panacea for leaks. Not at all. If damage has formed, then sealing products are an opportunity to get to a car service. This is true even if it is used good sealant for car radiator. ABRO and other manufacturers have good reviews, but their products have a temporary effect.

You should not ride with sealant all the time - the result will lead to serious breakdowns in the car. Remember that these funds are designed only for a short distance - to get to the nearest service station.

Also, when purchasing any auto chemicals, you should make sure that the product is original. Now you can buy very high quality fakes that can lead to backfire although the packaging is indistinguishable from the original.

So, we found out what a car radiator sealant is and what tool is best to choose.
