Chips on car doors how to fix. We eliminate chips and scratches on the car: expert advice

While driving on roads, small pebbles constantly fly out from under the wheels of the cars in front, which invariably fall on the paintwork of your car. As a result, the coating of the car is deformed, becoming chipped.

At first, the deformations are not too noticeable, but after a while everything becomes obvious. Arises reasonable question: Is it possible to somehow eliminate chips without the help of a service station? Answer: you can! Of course, for the restoration process, you will need something, namely: abrasive and polishing pastes, wax tinting pencil (in the color of the car), car shampoo, masking tape (or at least adhesive tape), toothpicks, sandpaper (#2000), rust converter, solvent, auto-marker. In principle, all these ingredients should be in the arsenal of every motorist. And now let's get to work.

1) Take shampoo and rinse well problem areas cars: those that require repair and let the surface dry;

2) now we analyze the state of the surface. If the paint has chipped off, but the primer has remained in place, then we take an abrasive polishing paste and apply it to the chip. We wait 15 minutes, then carefully polish the place of the chip with a piece of felt. Thus, you will conduct a rough polishing of the problem area. Now apply some thin polish and polish again. What will it give? And you will see for yourself: the place of the chip will be practically (by 90-95%) not noticeable;

3) if the paint came off along with the primer, then do this: put a little paint on the chip that exactly matches the color of your car. Once the paint is dry, apply the abrasive paste first, wait 15 minutes and buff the painted area well. Then apply a thin polish and polish again. The result will pleasantly surprise you;

4) a wax pencil is a great help in eliminating chips on a car body. If the crack or chip is not too deep, then the wax pencil will easily eliminate them. Apply a little wax to the problem area with a pencil, and then polish. It's both fast and simple. however, there is one point: wax is not a very strong substance, so you will have to repeat the polishing procedure from time to time.

Also very often it helps to solve the problem of chips and cracks special set for touching up chips. It is very easy to use it. Before applying paint to a chip, you should limit the chip area by pasting it around the perimeter with adhesive tape or a piece of masking tape. This way you will avoid accidentally getting paint on the body.

Now take the paints and start picking the color. Do not rush, because in this matter haste is not appropriate. Having picked up the color, apply the paint with a brush. Please note: the paint layer should be thin. The number of layers is three, although it all depends on the nature of the chip. Allow each coat of paint to dry before applying the next. Drips are eliminated with a napkin and solvent. When the last coat of paint has dried, be sure to apply a layer of special varnish, which, after drying, should also be treated with an abrasive and polished with a paste. The surface will shine again!

When driving a car, on the surface of the body appear small scratches and chips. They ruin the look. vehicle, and are the source of corrosion. Well, rust destroys the bodywork of the car. To solve problems, you need to know how to tint chips on a car yourself.

Small chips and scratches are fairly easy to fix. However, before restoration paintwork in small areas, you need to prepare:

  • Drive the car to a heated and well-lit area.
  • Wash and degrease the treated surface. At the same time, gasoline should not be used as a degreaser, as it can damage the paintwork of the body. For application, a fiber-free cloth is used.
  • After degreasing, coloring compositions are applied to small defects (they are used to paint chips) or special pencil to remove scratches, but around major damage, grinding is performed, the place is treated with a primer. In some cases, putty is used to even out small dents.

Upon completion of the preparatory work, proceed directly to the restoration of the paint on the car.

Minor damage is easy enough to remove with your own hands at home.

Shading Options

When painting over chips on a car, you need to determine the nature of the damage. If these are shallow defects, then you can use a polishing agent or a pencil. After surface treatment, the damage is almost invisible. If the chips have a recess, then the recovery process is carried out as follows:

  • A primer is applied to the prepared surface.
  • The dried primer is applied with a paint identical to that with which the vehicle body is painted.
  • After staining, a small layer of varnish is applied, it hides artistic defects, and makes the tinted area almost invisible. Well, processing the area with a layer of wax will give it a glossy sheen.

To choose the right shade of paint, turn to the services of a colorist. However, the shade code can be found in the technical documentation for the car.

Lots of chips on one piece

If there are many chips on one part, spot painting will not solve the problem. The dye applied with a brush will be quite noticeable. For more effective repair, carry out local painting of the body.

The part is dismantled, washed and degreased. After drying, it is completely polished polishing machine(First, coarse-grained discs are used, after which they are changed to fine grain). Some areas are treated with sandpaper. An acid primer is applied to the surface. After it dries, an acrylic primer is applied. If the part was damaged, an epoxy primer must be applied over the acrylic, it gives the surface mechanical strength.

After the primer dries, the part can be painted. The painted part of the body, after the paint has dried, varnish is applied. At the end of the restoration of the paintwork, the place of repair is polished.

If the body part cannot be dismantled, entire sections of the car body are pasted over with newspaper and masking tape.

Few chips without corrosion

If a part of the car is covered with a small number of small chips, and there are no signs of corrosion, then you can tint the chips on Auto paintwork with your own hands. It won't take much time and effort.

The chips are tinted with a soft artistic brush, then varnish or enamel is applied. So get rid of deep damage. If the chips have indentations, then the recovery algorithm looks like this:

  • Prepare the surface for work.
  • Apply a primer to the chip, let it dry. Grind.
  • Paint the restored place, apply varnish.

Only wet grinding can perfectly level the surface to be treated. To do this, the area is sprayed with water.

The chip caused the rust

If for a long time don't pay attention to paintwork damage, metal corrosion occurs. It is impossible to remove rust from the body with a pencil. If corrosion occurs, it will need to be removed, and only after that, proceed to eliminate chips. The algorithm of work performed is as follows:

  • The damaged area is cleaned to the metal. This applies to both large and small damage.
  • The place affected by rust is treated with a corrosion neutralizer and degreased.
  • The surface is primed, sanded, varnished, and polished.

If there are dents, they must be repaired. To do this, use special pulling devices and automotive putty.

Car color metallic or mother-of-pearl

In order for the shaded area not to be noticeable, you need to choose the right color. To do this, you need to know how to determine the shade:

  • The first way is to study the car's documentation. IN technical passport vehicle, the painting code is indicated, it can be used to find the coloring material of the desired shade.
  • If the documentation for the car is not available, you need to dismantle the gas tank cap and go to the store. There, the color is selected according to the desired paint.
  • An alternative would be to use the services of a colorist. A specialist in special patterns will select the exact shade of color.

Painting the surface of the car is made from an airbrush or spray can. The paint is applied to a dried, fat-free surface in a dry closed room. If dust or moisture gets into the treated area during painting, the painting will be damaged. After touching up the bodies, with the type of metallic or mother-of-pearl color, polishing is performed, which almost completely masks the restored area.

How to bring the surface to the ideal

Tinted areas after drying are visible to the naked eye. To correct this defect, they need to be polished. This operation is performed using a grinding machine and special milk.

Ways to polish the car body after painting have a number of nuances:

  1. Grinding is carried out with sandpaper soaked in water with a grit P1000.
  2. The next step is to use a sandpaper with a finer P2000 abrasive.
  3. At the place of polishing, a matte and smooth surface is formed. To give shine, polish with a grinder with coarse abrasive paste.
  4. The result is fixed with a medium abrasive polish.
  5. At the end of the work, the surface is treated with polishing milk and a soft grinder.

minor damage body paintwork cars do not cause concern for many motorists, but they are the cause of more serious problems. To avoid costly repairs, small chips and scratches must be removed promptly. Major damage can be repaired at home, so you can save a lot.

Damage to the paintwork of a car is, in fact, a common thing. The car body is constantly exposed to environment, while driving, the surface of the paintwork is often affected by external factors such as sand, gravel, crushed stone. Often, the body coating is damaged during careless driving, when the elements of the body touch curbs, other cars, posts, etc. And as a result of an accident, albeit minor, damage to the paintwork is guaranteed.

Scratches and chips on the car. Learning to clean together

Many car enthusiasts have learned how much it costs to paint an element of a car, and this amount is from 1.5 thousand rubles. up to 6 thousand rubles, and it depends on the size, location and nature of the damage, they begin to look for cheaper options for restoring the paintwork.

The cheapest option for repairing a chip or scratch is hand-painted. Painting a car element, in general, is not difficult, but you need to have the required equipment and know what is being done and why.

Now there are two ways to restore the coating of the body. The first of the methods is the use of so-called "pencils" to restore. This method is also called surface retouching. "Pencil" is a special set consisting of a small container with paint liquid, and also includes a brush for applying liquid. The paint and varnish liquid has a wide range of colors, so it will not be difficult to choose the right color.

Repair of small scratches and chips. "Pencil"

This method is used to seal small chips and scratches, but only if the primer is not damaged. Deep chips cannot be repaired in this way.

Before applying the paint and varnish liquid, the chipped area must be cleaned of dust present there and degreased. Next, gently apply the liquid with a brush. You will need to apply several layers, allowing each of them to dry well. On this retouching of the damaged surface can be considered complete.

Sealing deep damage to body elements

The second method, used to restore the coverage of auto elements, is more complex. During such restoration work, deep scratches, the surface of the element is restored, which has significant dents,

The first step is straightening work, if required. Of course, in this way it will not work to make a perfectly flat surface of a car body element, this is not necessary, but you need to straighten the element as best as possible. In the future, this will facilitate the restoration of evenness of the surface.

Then damaged place needs to be cleaned well. If straightening is not necessary, and only a deep chip or scratch is repaired, then restoration work begins with stripping.

During cleaning, the old coating is removed from the surface, as well as

Primer. In general, at the end of the cleaning work, there should be a spot of uncovered metal in place of the scratch. For quick work, you can use a drill with a special nozzle fixed in it.

The next step is to apply a layer of putty. It is putty that closes up all the small irregularities remaining after straightening work. The putty is applied in several layers. It is important to consider that the putty layer should not be very thick. The optimal layer is considered to be 1.5-2 mm thick. It is necessary to apply layers of putty intermittently, allowing each layer to dry well.

You can use a primer available in aerosol cans, or use an airbrush for application. The primer is also applied in several layers. Each of the applied layers should dry well.

After drying, the primed area must be well treated with fine-grained sandpaper. During this operation, you need to try to ensure a flat surface of the area to be sealed.

The finish of the primer will be cleaning the place of dust and degreasing it. Moreover, degreasing must be carried out carefully, with a small amount of a degreasing agent, otherwise it is possible to soften the applied layers of primer and putty with this substance.

On this preparatory work surfaces are finished and you can start painting. All conditions recommended by the manufacturer for the correct application of paint must be strictly followed, otherwise the coating will not be of high quality.

The appearance of chips on the paintwork of cars is a practical inevitable phenomenon. A random stone that has flown out from under the wheel of a car moving in the same or opposite direction most often has enough energy to chip off the paint on the body at the point of impact. The situation worsened in last years with transition automotive industry to more environmentally friendly water-soluble paints and varnishes, which are significantly inferior in their mechanical strength to traditional nitro or acrylic enamels.

As a result, after a certain period of operation, the car owner faces the question of how to paint over the chips that appeared on the paint of the car. After all, apart from the loss appearance chips can become foci for the appearance and development of corrosion on the car body.

There is nothing difficult in painting chips. For minor repairs paintwork each car manufacturer produces special two-component repair kits, consisting of a base paint and a protective varnish. You can choose such a set to match the paint color of your car by its VIN code at official dealers, or independently in electronic catalogs provided by online stores of spare parts. After purchasing a touch-up kit, you can start painting over chips in the following order.

  1. Thoroughly wash and dry the car body so that chips and areas of paint damage are more visible on it.
  2. Degrease all areas that will be tinted.
  3. Shake the base paint bottle well. Gently apply the first coat of paint to the damaged areas. If the chipped area is small, then toothpicks can be used for tinting, placing a drop of paint on its tip and filling it with the place where the paint is damaged. For large damage, special thin brushes must be used.
  4. Wait for the first coat of paint to dry completely. It may vary depending on the ambient temperature. After the first layer, also carefully apply the second and let it dry.
  5. After two coats of paint, apply 1-2 coats of protective clear varnish from the second vial of the repair kit. Don't forget to give the layers time to dry.
  6. Complete drying and hardening of paint with varnish will occur within a month. After that, you can try to lightly polish the touch-up area to remove bumps. If everything was done carefully, then after polishing the painted areas will become almost invisible.
Monitor the condition of the paintwork of your car, paint over the chips that appear on it in time. Then you will save the most expensive part of the car for a long time - the body from the appearance of premature corrosion.

Painting chips on a car can be both very expensive and almost free. It all depends on the number of chips and the urgency of their elimination. What to expect in each specific case?

Chips can be removed in two ways:

  1. Putty, prime and paint the entire part. This . It is better to use it when there are 10 or more chips on the part;
  2. Fill chips with paint and polish (sort of). This method is suitable if the parts have 3-5 chips. The disadvantages of this option are that it is more laborious and scrupulous. At the same time, it saves a lot of money.

Naturally, if the car is painted with acrylic, then it is with this paint that you need to fill the chips. Well, if the car is painted with metallic, then you will have to be patient, because this type of paint will have to fill chips 2-3 times longer than with acrylic. Therefore, painting over chips can take 3-4 days, with natural drying. Drying can be greatly accelerated by using an infrared lamp.

The very principle of the repair is to fill the chip with paint, giving it time to dry for 8-10 hours (before painting, it is advisable to bring down the gloss near the chip with emery No. 1500 or No. 2000 and degrease). When this task is completed, you can start polishing the machine. For this you need:

  1. Wipe excess paint with sandpaper (No. 2000) and a miniature iron (without iron, selected pits in the paintwork may remain);
  2. Polish matte surfaces, and then the entire detail (in this).

If the color matches, then there will be practically no difference in acrylic. As for the metallic, there may be a slight difference in it, because the paint lays down differently with a brush than with a spray gun.

Now you understand how the painting of chips on a car is done and you can safely begin to practice. In theory, things may seem a bit more complicated, but once the first chip is repaired, the uncertainty disappears.

Restoration of paintwork with a deep chip

The standard thickness of a car's paintwork is about 1mm. But at body repair it can reach up to several millimeters, and most of this layer is most often represented by putty. It is impossible to fill a deep chip with paint alone - it is necessary to putty.

Chips on thick coatings must first be completely peeled off. You need to remove all loose particles, even if this requires expanding the problem area several times. You can do this with a small screwdriver.

Usually deep chips reach up to body metal. It is advisable to first treat it with anticorrosive, let it react, and only then continue the repair. If there is an epoxy primer at hand, then it will not be superfluous to “seal” the exposed metal with this compound as well.

Next, you need to fill the chip. For this, universal automotive putty is best suited. We dilute a small amount of mass with a hardener and fill the chip. When the putty is completely hardened, it must be rubbed with sandpaper (2000).

On a note

As a result of sanding the puttied chip, the varnish around will become matte. Nothing wrong with that. The dullness will go away when polished.

If you have an airbrush, then spot painting is more convenient for them. You can, of course, do everything with a small brush, but the airbrush allows you to do smooth transition especially in lacquer. The task is to completely cover the putty with paint. If it is too contrasting with the paint, then you can first apply a primer that is close in tone.

After applying several coats of paint, the stain at the cleavage site will completely overlap. In this case, you can go a little beyond its limits on a matted varnish. With an airbrush it will be possible to do this smoothly, fading to nothing to the periphery. When applying varnish, it is necessary to cover the paint with it, but do not go over the gloss.

When the varnish dries, we will see the following picture: gloss at the place of the chip, around which there is a matte halo. This is completely normal, moreover, such a picture indicates that everything is done correctly. It remains only to sand the area with the 2000th sandpaper and polish until a shine appears.

On a note

It is important to wait until the varnish is completely hardened. Otherwise, it will not be polished as it should, but will stretch, leaving scuff marks. You can ride for several days with a small spot on the body, waiting for the complete curing of the varnish.

Emergency preservation of chips

Often in long trips gravel gets on the body, leaving chips there. If they are so small that they did not even break through the paintwork to the ground, then no conservative measures can be taken. However, exposed putty, primer or metal will require emergency measures.

It is most convenient to carry a can of epoxy primer with you. Then it is enough just to spray the composition onto the bare metal, and for a while it will be possible to forget about corrosion. Such a primer is sold in almost any auto shop.

If there is no epoxy primer, then autoplasticine will do. It is necessary to pinch off a piece, roll a ball out of it and close up the chip with it. So that plasticine is not conspicuous, when buying it, you need to choose a minimally contrasting color.
