Technology for replacing front shock absorbers on a Hyundai Santa Fe:

  • the car is raised on a lift or jacked up, the wheel is removed
  • mount detaches brake hose from the rack
  • wheel speed sensor removed from knuckle
  • the stabilizer is removed roll stability
  • the upper nuts holding the shock absorber strut to the car body are unscrewed
  • stand assembly is removed

Assembly is done in reverse order. The rear shock absorber is changed in the same way.

Rack Assembly

After the shock absorber strut assembly with the spring and top support removed from the machine, it must be disassembled. This requires special tool"screeds", they pull the spring to the center from both sides and fix it. Then the top nut is unscrewed, removed upper support shock absorber and spring. After that, the spring, together with the ties, is put on new shock absorber and assembly is done suspension strut in reverse order.

Support bearing replacement

Replacing the shock absorber strut support bearing on the Hyundai Santa Fe must be done if there is the slightest play in the bearing itself.

Roads are called one of the two main "ills" of Russia. Permanent pits and potholes cause not only inconvenience in terms of comfortable movement, but also cause significant damage to the suspension of a car, its individual elements especially bearings. It is not difficult to replace them, even a beginner can handle it, but it is much more difficult to diagnose the need for this very replacement in a timely manner, especially without knowing the signs of a thrust bearing failure. They will be discussed further, but first a little theory.

Why do we need bearings, where are they located and what are they?

Thrust bearings are connecting elements front pillar hydraulic shock absorber and corps vehicle. They are different:

  • with a built-in ring (external or internal) - you can recognize such bearings by the presence of special mounting holes in them (clamping flanges are not required for their installation);
  • with a detachable ring (also internal or external);
  • singly divided - are considered the most durable.

Thrust bearings (regardless of their type) are needed in order to dampen axial and radial vibrations of the suspension strut support and prevent it from jumping out of the place provided for it, while simultaneously ensuring the mobility of the connection between the support and the body. In this case, the load on the node is simply enormous. Designers understand this, so this part is made of high-strength alloys, but they do not make it "immortal".

Domestic off-road only reduces the life of the bearings, therefore, at least every 20,000 km. run, it is recommended to check their condition, as, however, this should be done in cases where there is doubt about its serviceability: a knock / crunch is heard from under the hood or other signs are noticed.

The main symptoms of a bad bearing

  1. A crunch / knock that occurs when turning the steering wheel or driving through bumps somewhere in the front of the car.
  2. Deteriorated handling and maneuverability.
  3. “Wagging” of the stern on the road (with a faulty rear pillar support).
  4. Violated wheel alignment, and in more advanced cases, a complete breakdown of the part and sometimes the jay's flight through the body of the car.

But keep in mind, all these signs, with the exception, perhaps, of a rack that has broken through the hood, may also indicate other failures that are not related to the bearing, so before changing a probably worn part, make sure that it really needs to be replaced, that is, carry out her diagnosis.

How to diagnose a faulty bearing: instructions.

  1. Shut off the car, protect it from rolling back hand brake or with stops.
  2. Open the hood.
  3. Remove the cover from the “glass” located on the hub bearing.
  4. Having pressed the bearing with the palm of your hand so that the rack does not walk, ask someone to rock the car in different directions.
  5. Listen. If the opnik crunches / rattles - it needs to be replaced.

But be careful, the knock / crunch should come from the bearing, and not just from the suspension, since in this case the problem may not be in it, but in the steering rack, steering cardan or steering shaft.

Guide to replacing the front support bearings (using the Hyundai Elantra as an example).

  1. Jack up and remove the wheel.
  2. Using two suitable wrenches, unscrew the stabilizer link from the shock absorber, first from the top with a 17 wrench, then from the bottom with a 19 wrench.
  3. Remove the 12mm brake hose and ABS mounting bolts.
  4. Further bottom mount Disconnect the shock absorber from the hub.
  5. Remove the support post by unscrewing 3 nuts 12 mm.

  1. Clamp the shock absorber in a vise. Using a special compressor, compress the spring so that it moves away from the cups - the top and the shock absorber.
  2. Holding the shock absorber rod with a hexagon, unscrew the fixing nut, and then, one by one, remove: the strut support, the cup with the bearing, the spring, the bump stop with anther, the lining rubber.
  3. Build removed elements in reverse order, replacing bad bearing on new.

Independent replacement of shock absorbers and thrust bearings on Hyundai car Elantra 4, (Hyundai Elantra 4).

It happens that when you turn the steering wheel, you can hear crackling from the side of the pillar supports in engine compartment, this indicates that the front shock absorber support bearing is out of order. In addition, on this car according to which I will tell, one shock absorber is also faulty, oil leaked out of it and it stopped working. But, as a rule, shock absorbers and thrust bearings are changed in pairs. In this article I will tell you how you can change shock absorbers and thrust bearings on a Hyundai Elantra 4 car with your own hands.
To replace, you will need a special tool - couplers for springs.

1. Raise the front of the car and remove the wheels.
2. Unscrew the stabilizer bar, only on top of the shock absorber. To do this, hold the stabilizer bar with one key inside, and from the outside we unscrew with another 17mm key.

3. We unscrew the two nuts 19mm, the lower shock absorber mount, and also unscrew the two 12mm bolts, the brake hose and abs wires.
4. Disconnect the lower shock absorber mount from the hub.

5. Unscrew the three 12mm nuts securing the rack support and remove it.

6. To disassemble the shock absorber, it will be more convenient to clamp it in a vise. We install the couplers in the spring, and compress them until the spring moves away from the upper cup, and the shock absorber cup.

7. Using a 19mm spanner, unscrew the shock absorber rod. When scrolling the stem, you can fix it with a clamp or a suitable key.

8. We remove in turn - the strut support, a cup with a bearing, a spring, a bump stop with anther, an elastic band under the spring, and rearrange everything on a new shock absorber. We install a new thrust bearing and the support itself, and assemble everything in the reverse order.

In this small photo instruction, you can see how to independently replace the rear support bearings with Hyundai models Elantra 4. By the way, for those who did not know, usually these bearings are changed immediately with the springs, with rare exceptions, because they become unusable almost simultaneously.
To work, in addition to standard tools, you need a special coupler for springs, and here are the part numbers:
- Used a shock absorber (not original): EX546512H000 (the same on the right and left sides)
- front shock absorber supports: 546102H200
- The bearing itself (not original) 3341/8

Let's get started:
1. As usual, first of all, we raise the front of the car and dismantle the wheels. The stabilizer bar will have to be unscrewed while doing this only with its upper part. We use the key for 17, holding the rack rod from the inside with the second key.

2. Go to the bottom side. We find two nuts at 19 and unscrew them. In addition to this, you will have to release the brake hose and ABS wires. You can remove the shock absorber and hub in the direction of mounting.

3. The rack support is held by only 3 bolts, we also unscrew them. After that, remove the rack.

4. Now you will need a little brute force and ingenuity, because you have to tighten the spring so that it moves away from the cup. A vise is fine for this, but ties are required, as in the photographs.

5. We arm ourselves with a key of 19 and finally you can unscrew the stem, sometimes it is useful to clamp it with something so that it does not scroll.

6. The last step in our replacement. Here's what you need to remove from the old one: a strut support, a cup with a bearing, a spring, a bump stop with anther, an elastic band under the spring, we mount all this in the same sequence on a fresh shock absorber.
We put new bearing and put everything in its place.
