Changing the oil in the Volvo C80 gearbox is most often associated with the repair of the automatic transmission itself, or it is replaced with a new one in the course of repairing oil leaks, since it must be drained for work. The oil in the automatic transmission is filled in by the manufacturer once for the entire life of the car. It is recommended to entrust the oil change in the Volvo S80 automatic transmission to professionals, but in some cases this operation can be done on your own.

Functions ATF oils in automatic transmission Volvo C80:

  • effective lubrication of rubbing surfaces and mechanisms;
  • reduction of mechanical load on the nodes;
  • heat dissipation;
  • removal of microparticles resulting from corrosion or wear of parts.
The color of ATF oil for automatic transmission Volvo S80 allows not only to distinguish oils by type, but also helps to find out in the event of a leak from which system the fluid escaped. For example, the oil in automatic transmission and power steering has a red tint, antifreeze is green, and in the engine it is yellowish.
Reasons for oil leakage from automatic transmission in Volvo C80:
  • wear of automatic transmission seals;
  • wear of the shaft surfaces, the occurrence of a gap between the shaft and the sealing element;
  • wear of the automatic transmission sealing element and the speedometer drive shaft;
  • backlash input shaft automatic transmission;
  • damage to the sealing layer in the joints between parts of the automatic transmission: sump, automatic transmission housing, crankcase, clutch housing;
  • loosening of the bolts that provide the connection of the above parts of the automatic transmission;
A low oil level in a Volvo S80 automatic transmission is the main cause of clutch failure. Due to the low fluid pressure, the friction clutches are poorly pressed against the steel discs and do not have enough contact with each other. As a result friction linings in the automatic transmission of the Volvo S80 they become very hot, charred and destroyed, significantly polluting the oil.

Due to lack of oil or poor quality oil in automatic transmission Volvo S80:

  • plungers and channels of the valve body are clogged with mechanical particles, which leads to a shortage of oil in the packages and provokes wear of the bushing, rubbing parts of the pump, etc.;
  • overheat and wear out quickly steel discs gearboxes;
  • rubber-coated pistons, thrust discs, clutch drum, etc. overheat and burn;
  • the valve body wears out and becomes unusable.
Contaminated automatic transmission oil cannot fully remove heat and provide high-quality lubrication of parts, which leads to various faults Automatic transmission Volvo S80. Heavily contaminated oil is an abrasive suspension that, under high pressure, creates a sandblasting effect. Intense impact on the valve body leads to thinning of its walls at the locations of the control valves, as a result of which numerous leaks can occur.
You can check the oil level in the Volvo S80 automatic transmission using a dipstick. The dipstick has two pairs of marks - the upper pair of Max and Min allows you to determine the level in hot oil, the lower pair - in cold. Using the dipstick, it is easy to check the condition of the oil: you need to drop the oil onto a clean white cloth.

When choosing a Volvo S80 automatic transmission oil for replacement, you should be guided by a simple principle: it is best to use oil recommended by Volvo. Meanwhile, instead of mineral oil you can fill in semi-synthetic or synthetic, but in no case should you use oil "class below" from the prescribed one.

Synthetic oil for automatic transmission Volvo C80 is called "non-replaceable", it is poured for the entire life of the car. Such oil does not lose its properties under the influence high temperature and is designed for a very long period of use of the Volvo S80. But we must not forget about the appearance of a mechanical suspension as a result of friction clutch wear with a very significant mileage. If the automatic transmission has been operated for some time in conditions of lack of oil, it is necessary to check the degree of its contamination and, if necessary, replace it.

Ways to change the oil in an automatic transmission Volvo S80:

  • Partial oil change in Volvo S80 box;
  • Complete oil change in a Volvo C80 box;
A partial oil change in a Volvo S80 automatic transmission can be done independently. To do this, just unscrew the drain on the pallet, driving the car onto the overpass, and collect the oil in a container. Usually up to 25-40% of the volume flows out, the remaining 60-75% remain in the torque converter, that is, in fact, this is an update, not a replacement. To update the oil in the Volvo C80 automatic transmission in this way to the maximum, 2-3 replacements will be required.

A complete automatic transmission oil change for Volvo S80 is carried out using an automatic transmission oil change unit, auto repair specialists. In this case, you will need more oil ATF than the Volvo S80 automatic transmission can accommodate. Flushing takes one and a half or double the volume of fresh ATF. Cost will be more expensive partial replacement, and not every car service provides such a service.
Partial ATF oil change in the Volvo S80 automatic transmission according to a simplified scheme:

  1. Unscrew drain plug, drain the old ATF oil;
  2. We unscrew the automatic transmission pan, which, in addition to the bolts holding it, is treated along the contour with a sealant.
  3. We get access to the automatic transmission filter, it is advisable to change it at each oil change, or rinse it.
  4. At the bottom of the pallet there are magnets that are necessary to collect metal dust and chips.
  5. We clean the magnets and wash the pallet, wipe it dry.
  6. Install the automatic transmission filter in place.
  7. We install the automatic transmission pan in place, replacing the gasket of the automatic transmission pan if necessary.
  8. We twist the drain plug, replacing the drain plug gasket for the automatic transmission.
We fill the oil through the technological filler hole (where the automatic transmission dipstick is located), using the dipstick we control the oil level in the automatic transmission to a cold one. After changing the oil in the automatic transmission, it is important to check its level after driving 10-20 km, already with the automatic transmission warmed up. Top up to level if necessary. The regularity of changing the oil depends not only on the mileage, but also on the nature of the ride on the Volvo S80. You should focus not on the recommended mileage, but on the degree of contamination of the oil, systematically checking it.

The owners of the popular Volvo S80 business sedan are well aware of how to properly change the oil in the gearbox of their car. Indeed, this procedure does not require much effort, and is performed without a professional tool. You can do this at home, for example in the garage. And yet, despite all the simplicity, during this procedure, the owners of the Volvo S80 face many problems. This once again proves the fact that the Volvo S80 is quite complicated car in terms of construction. This article focuses on the choice of oil, as well as the procedure for changing the fluid in the Volvo S80 automatic transmission.

There is a certain period of time regulating the frequency of replacement gear oil. For the Volvo S80 box, according to official figures, it is approaching 80-100 thousand kilometers. Admittedly, this is too much for the harsh climatic conditions in Russia. Yes, Russian Volvo owners S80 has to be replaced every 35-40 thousand kilometers. This is the optimal time to maintain the gearbox intact, taking into account all the negative impacts on it. The point is that under the influence external factors the oil becomes unusable very quickly, and its deterioration occurs useful properties. As a result, the oil is no longer able to cool the parts properly and prevent them from overheating. The matter can reach a major malfunction, and in the end, the gearbox will become unusable.
Thus, it is impossible to say exactly what the replacement schedule is if the machine is operated in harsh conditions. An interval of 20 thousand kilometers is not excluded. After all, not only the climatic factor plays a role here, but also the manner and style of driving. But no matter what the manufacturer says, the oil will still become unusable, and it will have to be replaced, even despite favorable conditions.

Naturally, more frequent replacement oils are definitely better than regular repairs gearboxes.

In the case of the Volvo S80, you will have to perform a partial oil change, as a complete change will require a qualified service and appropriate equipment.

  • What you need to replace
  • Set of tools, wrenches, heads and hexagons
  • New gear oil
  • New oil filter
  • Technical containers for draining waste oil
  • Gaskets (several pieces)

Getting Started

  1. The car must be warmed up in such a way that the engine and the oil in the automatic transmission have operating temperature- about 60-70 degrees. A 10-minute drive around the city is enough for this.
  2. We install the car on the observation deck, with full access to the bottom of the car. It could be a lift viewing hole, overpass, or a jack with high wheel supports
  3. There is a gearbox pan at the bottom of the machine, it must be removed. But before that, most likely, you will have to dismantle motor protection, if any
  4. So, the protection and the pallet are dismantled. Thus, we gained access to the oil drain. We substitute a container under it to drain the used oil, then unscrew the plug and observe the drain process old fluid. It is possible that the oil will be black in color and will smell burnt. This is quite common, especially with high mileage.
  5. While the oil is draining, we clean the pan and drain plugs from dirt, oil residues and metal chips. Rinse, dry and set aside
  6. We unscrew the second plug located on the gearbox housing and drain the remaining oil
  7. Measure the volume of drained oil. The point is that there are so many new fluid must be poured into the oil filler hole. You should get at least 3 liters. The amount of oil drained is very important, as overfilling or underfilling with new oil can adversely affect the performance of the transmission. For example, fluid overflow can lead to extrusion of cuffs and seals.
  8. After making sure that the oil is completely drained, we twist back all the plugs, after putting new sealing rings on them
  9. We put back the motor protection and the gearbox pan, lower the car to the ground
  10. The next, most important stage is filling in new oil. This procedure is made using a funnel and a thin hose that is inserted into the appropriate filling hole. Recall that it is necessary to pour in as much oil as the old fluid was drained.
  11. We start the engine, let it run for idling. At this point, we switch the box to several modes in a row, preferably with a 2-second delay in each gear. Due to this, the new oil will quickly run through the entire transmission system, and will provide complex lubricant all components
  12. Turn off the engine, check the oil level. If necessary, add a little more oil, tighten all bolts, fasteners and plugs tightly. On this, the process of changing the oil in the automatic transmission of the Volvo S80 has been successfully completed.

I decided to create a topic because. detailed description I did not find the process of changing the oil in this box.

So, let's begin:

1. Disconnect the terminals from the battery.

2. Remove the engine protection.

3. Unscrew the built-in plug for level control (Torx 40).

Attention! If the level plug is acidified, then at great effort for unscrewing, it is possible to cut the Torx slots, because the metal used to make it is soft. If you feel that it "does not go", then heat it on the drain plug removed and calmly unscrew everything. Strongly warm is not worth it. there is a rubber o-ring under it (this is if there is no new one)

4. Unscrew the drain plug using a tubular wrench for 13.

It is possible to use a gas key for this purpose, but for me this is barbarism.

5. Drain the oil from the gearbox.

6. Install the drain plug.

We use new gasket, do not forget to lubricate it with ATF oil.

The oil drain plug is installed with a force of 35 Nm.

7. Install the level plug by hand.

Check for the presence of the rubber o-ring.

8. Grasping the front edge with a slight upward movement of the hands, remove the "plate".

9. Holding the edges, we also remove the ECU boot with a slight upward movement of the hands.

10. Unscrew the two screws and disconnect the air duct from the case air filter.

11. Disconnect the two connectors from the computer.

12. Move upwards, remove the connector from the front wall of the air filter housing.

13. We release the fastening of the air filter housing from under the nuts on the right side.

14. Disconnect the connector from the flow meter by pressing a flat screwdriver on the upper part of the latch and simultaneously pulling it up.

15. After loosening the clamp, we pull the air pipe from the flow meter and carefully pull the air filter housing out of the engine compartment.

16. Taking the tourniquet to the side and fixing it, we find the cork filler neck. We clean the place around it from dirt.

17. Remove the filler cap (Torx 55).

18. We lower the hose (diameter 14mm) with a watering can in the filling hole.

19. Install the air filter housing in place by connecting all the connectors and putting the air pipe on the flow meter.

20. By pressing on the plastic petals, carefully rotate left and right to remove the exhaust hose. We put on it a hose with a diameter of 12 mm, the second end of which we lower into a container for collecting used oil.

Attention! The exhaust hose is at the bottom, not at the top. Be prepared to collect any escaping fluid.

21. Connect the battery.

22. Fill in 4 liters of gear oil of your choice. Much has been written about this on the forum.

23. Engage parking brake. Move the gear selector lever to position P.

24. Start the engine and leave it to idle.

25. Engage all gears in turn with the gear selector from P to D. Stop for at least 2 seconds in each position. Stop the engine when air bubbles are visible in the hose.

26. Fill with approximately 2 liters of oil. Start the engine again and let it idle with gear changes. Stop the engine when air bubbles are visible in the hose.

27. Fill again with about 2 liters of oil. Start the engine and let it idle. Stop the engine when air bubbles are visible in the hose.

Do I need to change the oil in the automatic transmission?

You've probably heard of the term "maintenance-free automatic transmission". Very often, this is guided by many services that do not know how / do not want to change the oil in the transmission. In fact, according to all international rules and regulations, an automatic transmission oil (ATF) and filter change is required every 50,000-60,000 km. In this case, the car owner asks himself the question - "What kind of replacement do I need? Partial or complete?".

Partial or complete oil change in automatic transmission?

Partial replacement (ATF renewal) is carried out without flushing the automatic transmission. To carry out such work, on average, 4-5 liters and half an hour of time are required. The new oil is mixed with the old, and the operation of the box becomes smoother. Many motorists believe that it is better to carry out exclusively full ATF replacement, with flushing the system and expelling the old fluid. We do not pursue the goal of earning as much as possible on our clients, but we warn about possible problems, and we recommend in some cases ONLY partial replacement.

For example, if the car's mileage is more than 100,000 km, and the oil in the box has never been changed, then such a replacement may adversely affect the operation of the automatic transmission, up to its complete failure. In cars with solid mileage, this is due to the fact that with a complete replacement transmission fluid with automatic transmission flushing, various deposits are washed out throughout the system, which clog oil channels, and without normal cooling the box dies pretty quickly. In this case, for maximum replacement of the old oil, 2-3 partial changes should be made at intervals of 200-300 km. This will certainly not be comparable to a complete ATF replacement, but the percentage of fresh fluid will be 70-75%.

In what cases is a complete ATF replacement carried out?

All of the above problems do not apply to car owners who every 50.000-60.000 km. carried out scheduled replacement transmission oils. In this case complete replacement oil in the automatic transmission allows the box to serve faithfully, and increases its resource by 150-200%.

The resource and quality of automatic transmission more than half depend on the oil used and operating conditions - and there can be no trifles in this matter.

When an oil change is needed in a Volvo automatic transmission - the difference between a partial oil change on a Volvo and a complete one

Timely oil change and application of oils required parameters and quality will help the automatic transmission to conscientiously work out the entire prescribed period. Every missed service on this unit or the use of the wrong oil will result in an extremely expensive automatic transmission repair or even more expensive replacement.

According to the technical regulations for maintenance, an oil change in an automatic transmission of Volvo cars should be carried out after 20 thousand kilometers or after one year.

But in Russian conditions when cars are forced to stand in traffic jams for a long time, and there is a great risk of acquiring not too quality oil, this period should be reduced up to 10-15 thousand kilometers .

More frequent oil changes will cost a little more, but it will be much cheaper than an expensive automatic transmission repair or replacement. Especially since incomplete oil change perfect for any driver.

With an incomplete oil change, no more than 35-40% of the total oil volume is drained from the automatic transmission. Whereas complete oil change, performed only at service stations, includes automatic transmission diagnostics, complete removal oil, flushing the box, replacing oil filter which cannot be done without special equipment.

In cases where merged with automatic transmission volvo the oil is very dark or black in color, smells of burning, or when the automatic transmission is not behaving properly, you must immediately take the car to the nearest service station dealer center Volvo.

How to change the oil on a Volvo automatic transmission yourself - do-it-yourself instructions for changing the oil on a Volvo

Incomplete oil changes are usually carried out on a lift. If this is not possible, you can change the oil using two jacks and special props that are available in almost any auto shop.

  1. We warm up the automatic transmission
    Before changing the oil, it is necessary to warm up the automatic transmission by driving ten kilometers, then prepare tools and accessories - two wheel chocks, two jacks, two props, special and ordinary keys, an oil drain canister with a volume of at least four, and preferably five liters. An oil canister with a cut off top will do. You will also need a watering can and a hose for filling the oil, as well as a new sealing ring for the oil plug.
  2. We raise the car
    It is necessary to raise the car using one of two methods:
    A) With the help of jacks, having started two jacks in front of the car, it is necessary to raise it so that supports stand under the body from the side. After placing the supports, it is necessary to slightly loosen the jacks, lowering them in turn, so that the car is established on them.
    B) on a lift.

  3. Unscrew the pan and clean the drain plug
    When the machine is installed and checked, it is necessary to unscrew the pan with a suitable wrench, supporting it. After removing and removing the pallet from under the car, it is necessary to clean the automatic transmission drain plug with an iron brush. This operation must be carried out with glasses in order to avoid clogging the eyes with dirt falling from the cork.
    Cleaning the plug is mandatory, because the dirt remaining on the pan can get inside the automatic transmission and disable it. When the cork is cleaned, you need to take the prepared container and place it directly under drain hole closed with two stoppers. Then these two plugs are carefully, avoiding jerks with the key, and acting calmly and smoothly, unscrew. The first is removed and placed separately, and the second most often falls into the oil, where the sealing ring also falls. This is not scary.
  4. Drain the old oil
    I wash the cork in diesel fuel or kerosene, and wipe it with a clean, non-fluffy cloth, but the ring still needs to be put in a new one. If possible, try not to put your hands under the stream of oil.

    After this stage - and in the case of using an oil canister - before it, it is necessary to note the volume of drained oil in order to add the same amount. A strong oil overflow is just as detrimental to an automatic transmission as a serious underfill. When strongly elevated level cuffs and seals are squeezed out, and the automatic transmission fails.
    When the oil has stopped dripping, both plugs are washed with diesel fuel or kerosene, wiped with a clean, lint-free cloth, and twisted back. Don't forget to install a new o-ring.
  5. Lowering the car to the ground
    The protection is put in place, all the bolts are tightened, the machine is lowered.
  6. Pour new oil into the automatic transmission and check its level
    Oil through a thin (according to the diameter of the dipstick hole) hose and funnel is poured into the automatic transmission, equal in volume to the amount drained.

    It is necessary to start the engine, and switch the automatic transmission lever with an interval of two to three seconds to each of the positions. After that, the engine is turned off, and after five minutes the oil level in the automatic transmission is checked, and topped up if necessary.

If you need to top up more than half a liter of oil, then you need to consult your dealer or specialist workshop . It is not recommended to carry out any more serious manipulations with the automatic transmission at home, and all other procedures, including replacing the automatic transmission oil filter, and in without fail automatic transmission flushing should be carried out at the service station at official dealer Volvo.

What oil should be purchased for replacement in a Volvo automatic transmission - original oil designations for Volvo

The operating instructions for Volvo cars list the oils and fluids recommended by the manufacturer, for example - VOLVO 31256774.

Of course, it is desirable to use exactly the type and name of the oil indicated by the manufacturer, but, if it is impossible to find it, you can pick up analogues.

All automatic transmission oils have ATF type and most often specification Dexron II or Dexron III . The manufacturer's choice by and large, is not that important.

GM oil is just as good Toyota oils, Castrol, Exxon-Mobil, Volvo or some other manufacturer. It is important that the oil matches the climatic conditions, viscosity, and lubricating properties .

Filling with oil that is not suitable for these parameters in best case will make driving a car uncomfortable, and at worst, it will greatly reduce the life of the automatic transmission. Therefore, an important task for a motorist is buy real butter , whose name is on the label, and not a fake. Otherwise, the likelihood of a breakdown of the automatic transmission greatly increases.
