Toyota WS automatic transmission oil
Is it worth mentioning that gearbox oils in the last 10 years have significantly surpassed all other technical fluids for a car in terms of the degree of improvement? Apparently not. Did it save the industry from cones - also no! Did it help increase the service life of the units? And finally, the answer is YES!
Many years ago, most transmissions were mechanical, automatic transmissions were a novelty, and few people thought about special fluids for them. As a rule, if fluid was needed in the gearbox, the motorist went to the nearest store and posed the question like this: give me the last Dextron! But those days have passed, manufacturers began to take into account the features of the operation of individual components, and not just cars. And this led by the mid-2000s to the emergence of high-quality, specialized families of oils for each type of transmission - from manual transmission to CVT. And of course, the Toyota concern also did not stand aside from these developments. Let's go through the types of gear oil used from the mid-2000s to the present day. The interval was not chosen by chance - if we talk about automatic transmission oils of the Toyota brand, then it was in 2006 that the latest development of the concern was presented Automatic transmission oil Toyota WS, which immediately became the standard for use in almost all models of the manufacturer's cars up to the present, 2016 year. In fact, 10 years have already waved him off.
The undisputed leader in popularity - automatic transmission oil Toyota WS. As we wrote earlier, this oil was introduced to the market more than 10 years ago and still, thanks to its optimally balanced qualities, keeps its place in the Toyota oil line. This oil finds the widest application - it is poured into cars from Toyota Corolla to Kruzak 200. Impressive, isn't it?
Toyota VS automatic transmission oil is supplied to our market in 2 types of plastic cans - 1 liter (original number or ) and 20 liters (original number or ). Not a lot, it would seem, given the demand for oil on the market, but the fact remains that at the moment the Central Toyota warehouse in Russia does not offer any other packaging. An analysis of the needs in the volumes of this oil, as well as service intervals, will allow us to conclude that for an ordinary car enthusiast, the only purchase option is a set of liter cans in the right amount - usually from 6 to 8 liters, depending on the car and replacement method. In exceptional cases, if the budget is not very tight or there is a need due to the operation of the automatic transmission, up to 14 liters of oil are used, driving it under pressure through the system to flush out accumulated metal waste from natural gear wear.
The next type of oil in popularity should be calledoil Toyota ATF T IV. This oil is officially supplied to our market in only one type of canister - a 5-liter can, with the original number or. This oil is gradually disappearing from the shelves of stores, being replaced by automatic transmission oil WS, but, nevertheless, deserves a good word. Firstly, it is still in demand in some modern cars. For example, in the Highlanders. Secondly, this is exactly the same specialized oil first developed for Toyota automatic transmissions. And it is precisely this that, until now, can be used in any automatic Toyota boxes that were installed on cars from the 90s to the mid-2000s.
Concluding the tour of original Toyota automatic transmission oils, it is worth mentioning one more commodity unit - coming from the American market to us automatic transmission oil Toyota WS in liter black canisters. The number of this type of oil or without a dash in the form of . It is under it that you should look for it in the stores of the Russian Federation. What are its pros and cons?
Pros:
1. Original oil type WS
2. Sold in small-volume canisters - less chance of getting a fake.
3. Somewhat cheaper than WS automatic transmission oil supplied to our market by Toyota.
Minuses:
1. Unofficial origin in our market. Despite the similarity of the abbreviation, it is likely that for a country with other climatic zones (relative to Russia), the mixture has some specific additives. This is not a statement, because we have not yet done an analysis of the chemical composition and have not seen that someone did it before us on the Russian market. But, nevertheless, such a possibility exists.
2. The volume is measured in American quarts, the can is not 1 liter, but about 5% smaller in volume (0.95l). This is a relative indicator of "negativity", because often the oil remains when replacing “for topping up”, but, with the same success, in some situation it may not be enough, which will require the purchase of an extra can. With this in mind, a lower price may well not justify itself with such a slight difference in price. When buying, this aspect should be taken into account.
All these pluses and minuses are relative, subjective and can be discussed. Their sequence does not indicate significance relative to each other, but is a simple enumeration.
To date, the second half of 2016, these are all Toyota automatic transmission oil options that can be purchased from an official supplier - Toyota brand dealers. We did not consider non-original oils in this article. given the specifics of the product, information on them should be presented in a slightly different way. See a separate article in the links below - if it is not there yet, then we are still working on it. But it will be necessary. We will talk about such brands of oils as Febi, Idemitsu, SWAG and possibly some others.
Interesting
Toyota WS is used as a CVT oil in many Toyota and Lexus hybrids such as the Prius.
Toyota ATF WS transmission oil has a long service life, sometimes it is interpreted as a lifetime. However, like any oil product, the liquid oxidizes, which leads to an increase in its viscosity, and as a result, to an increase in fuel consumption. The oxidized liquid is not able to withstand high-temperature deposits. Toyota ATF WS can be replaced even when there is no pin on the box, which is usually interpreted as "non-maintenance" of the automatic transmission.
The name Toyota WS stands for World Standard, i.е. world standard automatic transmission fluid. The global trend in automatic transmissions is to reduce the viscosity of the working fluid, which reduces internal friction losses and leads to a reduction in fuel consumption by the car. In this regard, the viscosity of Toyota ATF WS is lower than that of fluids from previous classes from Toyota and is about 6 cSt in working condition (1 cSt is the viscosity of water).
Toyota ATF WS automatic transmission oil meets Toyota ATF WS specification
This fluid is manufactured by Exxon Mobil in Japan.
According to the manual for the Lexus GX470, it says that ONLY one oil can be poured into the box: Toyota ATF WS. This oil is categorically not compatible with ATF Type-IV. Possible consequences - failure of the box in case of prolonged operation on Type-IV. About "oil for the entire service life" - this is nonsense of pure water. Not a single box will be able to go more than 100 thousand km in one oil. Even if you have a dipstickless box, you still need to change the oil.
TC007-03 from August 2003, for the GX470 2004 model range,
oil in the box goes WS.
This is for GX470 after 2003.11.
Until this date, the use of T-4 oil or compatible oils is acceptable.
TC009-03 dated October 2003, for models LX470, GX470, LS430. This is for 2004-2005 models. By age of oil in the box on the GX470 under normal use
Have not found. Rummaged everything, only checking the level and topping up. Found replacements only, when operating from trailers (trailer), difficult road conditions at 60,000 miles (96,000 km). I think it is necessary to look in each specific case for condition, color, smell, wear particles, etc.
Toyota ATF WS is a high quality original transmission oil for automatic transmissions of Toyota vehicles. Toyota ATF WS is applicable in the latest automatic transmissions and sequential manual transmissions of Toyota vehicles. Toyota ATF WS automatic transmission oil is recommended for use in vehicles operating in severe weather conditions, such as low and high ambient temperatures, as well as extended drain intervals. Toyota ATF WS ensures smooth gear shifting even in undesirable automatic transmission modes. Toyota ATF WS contains the latest anti-wear additive package that allows Toyota automatic transmissions to operate much longer than Dexron-type oils.

Genuine automatic transmission fluid for Toyota vehicles since 2007.
Toyota has a lot of different automatic transmission fluids, but since 2007, Toyota has mainly been pouring ATF WS fluid into automatic transmissions. Information about what kind of fluid you have filled in to the gearbox can be found by looking at the automatic transmission level dipstick. The type of fluid will be written on it and the level necessary for the normal operation of the automatic transmission will be marked with risks.
Toyota ATF WS comes from two places of production - Japan and the USA. The volume of canisters Japan: 1 liter and 4 liters, America-946 ml - the so-called American squares. They are of the same quality and can be mixed with each other. The color of this fluid is dark red, like most automatic transmission fluids.
I mostly use American e-liquid in 946 ml cans. Its article for ordering in online stores is 00289ATFWS. Such a container costs about 900 r. On average, 4-5 liters are enough to partially replace the fluid in an automatic transmission. I take 5 canisters of 946 ml for partial replacements and still have a little left.
The fluid in the automatic transmission must be changed periodically. The manufacturer recommends performing such a procedure every 80,000 km, making a complete replacement of all fluid. I usually change by partial replacement every 50,000 km, and once every 100,000 km with an automatic transmission filter change.
With a partial replacement without removing the pan and replacing the automatic transmission filter, you will still need to buy a gasket-ring for the drain plug of the automatic transmission pan. Through the hole in the automatic transmission pan, the old fluid is drained. And filling is done through the automatic transmission dipstick hole through a small funnel, which also needs to be bought when changing the fluid on your own in the automatic transmission.
It's time to think about changing the gear oil. There was no normal topic on our site, which is a pity. I had to smoke the internet. A lot of conflicting information was found on the Internet, not only which original to pour, but the timing of the oil change (there is only 20 bodywork). Some say that it is necessary to change after 80t.k.p. Others that 60t.k.p. the third that after 40t.k.p. And in one place, a person recommended an oil change after 160k.p. Someone from DRIVE2 wrote that he uses Toyota ATF WS, Toyota ATF T-IV, Toyota ATF-DIII automatic transmission fluids. But elsewhere they claim that all these fluids are not compatible. Those. cannot interfere. Complete replacement only.
In our expensive time, oils have risen in price, and besides, in our city there was no original, now I’m thinking about changing the original oil to an analogue. In addition, when replacing from the original oil to an analogue, they write that it is necessary to flush the box. (i.e. complete replacement with flushing).
And so I became aware.
Toyota ATF WS complies with JWS 3324 with part number 0888602305.
1) Viscosity at 40C = 23.67 - this transmission is really very economical, in conditions when the box is not yet warmed up. A lower viscosity oil resists gearbox parts less and saves fuel.
2) Viscosity at 100C = 5.36 - we see the same lower viscosity at operating temperature - when the box is already warmed up.
3) Pour point -44C - this is not a record, of course, but it is quite normal for Russian winters.
4) Brookfield dynamic viscosity at -40С = 9070 is an excellent result, this parameter is much more important than the pour point.
5) Corrosion on copper at 150C = rating 2a - normal, 1b - considered excellent, 2a is close ...
6) Sulfur content = 0.060 - low sulfur content. That is, in principle, there is nothing to oxidize.
7) The package of additives is standard - a little phosphorus, which is part of the anti-wear additive. A little calcium - which acts as a detergent neutralizing additive. A little boron is an Extreme Pressure antiwear additive, or a dispersant.
8) And most importantly, the oil contains esters - which reduce wear and friction.
The oil is fully synthetic, has the best temperature characteristics and its service life is not 40 thousand km, but judging by the American manual as much as 100 thousand miles, which is already 160 thousand km for our native KilometersArticle codes for ordering in online stores:
0888602305 - 4L sheet
0888680807 - 1L plastic
00289ATFWS - 0.946mL plastic.A search on Exist.ru yielded scant information. But Realparts.ru pleased with analogues that you can buy Yokki YCA041001P at a modest price.
In addition, on various forums, people claim that they use a complete analogue of Toyota ATF WS.
Idemitsu ATF Type TLS-LV, Lukoil ATF Synth Asia and Lukoil ATF.There remains an open question.
What oils do you use? And what is your oil change interval? Do you have any experience.
From someone I heard that the Prius 20 box is very capricious and does not like long replacement periods and quickly fails.
Each automobile concern is trying to ensure that technical fluids do not harm the units. In the event of a breakdown, it will be difficult to prove to consumers that the manufacturer is not at fault.
In this case, the reputation of the brand will be irreparably damaged. For this, there are specifications and approvals, as well as oils produced under the name of auto concerns: such as Toyota ATF WS.
Automobile manufacturers do not have to open oil refineries. You can simply order the required product from recognized masters.
Toyota has signed a contract with the American oil producer Exxon Mobil Corporation. The plant that produces lubricants for Toyota is located in Japan.
Destination Toyota Genuine ATF WS
The transmission fluid was developed jointly by Japanese and American engineers for Toyota, Lexus, as well as other models produced on these platforms.
The composition of the oil works perfectly in Japanese-made automatic transmissions: Aisin. There are restrictions on the year of manufacture: Toyota factory approval only applies to models manufactured after 2004.
In addition to automatic transmissions, Toyota ATF WS oil is used in CVTs. This type of transmission is found in most Toyota hybrid vehicles, such as the Prius.
This fluid is successfully used in Toyota sequential gearboxes, although this is not the main purpose. It's just that the operating conditions of automatic transmission units are similar to the loads in sequential mechanisms.
Since the abbreviation WS stands for World Standard, this transmission fluid can be poured into automatic transmissions and CVTs on all Toyotas and Lexuses, regardless of the production market.
Japanese, European, North American and African versions are equally compatible with ATF WS. In addition, the transmission can be used in other brands of cars if the oil characteristics match.
Positive properties of Toyota ATF WS
The main virtue of this oil is its long service life. Potentially, many users perceive the transmission as irreplaceable.
If you purchased a used car, or are going to operate the car for longer than 100-150 thousand km, the fluid in the automatic transmission or variator must be changed.
Important! Even if your engine does not have a traditional dipstick in the gearbox, there is still a way to replace it.
- the oil can work for a long time under conditions of high load on the gearbox: frequent and abrupt shifts practically do not change the characteristics of the fluid;
- switching is smooth, without a negative impact on the mechanisms, regardless of the type of gearbox (automatic transmission, variator, sequential);
- a set of special additives that reduce friction and wear of the metal parts of the shift mechanism;
- universal temperature regime: practically has no restrictions on the climatic zones of the Russian Federation;
- manufacturers managed to combine various qualities that are usually antipodes: low viscosity and high adhesion;
- balanced content of esters reduce friction loads and reduce wear of gear teeth;
- creation of an effective package of additives based on phosphorus and boron allows saving on production costs;
- calcium is present in the lubricant: the transmission fluid has good detergent properties;
- low ability to internal oxidation and protection against corrosion of parts of the gearbox.
The form of release can also be attributed to the positive qualities. The most popular packaging is a 4L tin can. Article Toyota ATF WS 08886-02305.
By purchasing such oil, the buyer can be almost 100% sure of its authenticity.
Basic characteristics and tolerances
- the base is pure synthetics;
- viscosity index = 171;
- kinematic viscosity measured at 40°C = 23.7;
- kinematic viscosity measured at 100°C = 5.4;
- loss of viscosity characteristics at low temperature (pour) = -44°C;
- dynamic viscosity according to Brookfield at the beginning of operation (test temperature: - 40 ° C) = 9070;
- impact on non-ferrous metals is below average;
- sulfur content of the composition is less than 0.06%;
- content in additives (mass fraction): phosphorus = 271;
- content in additives (mass fraction): boron = 62;
- content in additives (mass fraction): calcium = 114.
The tolerance is practically the same, it comes from the name: Toyota ATF WS. All other specifications from Toyota do not fit.
Toyota ATF WS gear oil analogues
Of course, almost all manufacturers of technical fluids produce similar compositions, we list the main ones:
- Aisin ATF AFW+
- ZIC ATF MULTI
- Castrol ATF Multivehicle
- Liqui Moly Top Tec ATF 1200
- Petro-Canada DuraDrive MV Synthetic ATF
- Idemitsu ATF Type-TLS
However, Toyota ATF type T IV transmission fluid is closest in performance. In fact, this is the predecessor of ATF WS, which was produced for filling in gearboxes and CVTs of previous generations of Toyota and Lexus (until 2004).
Despite the similarity of the parameters, Toyota ATF T IV does not have ATF WS approvals, but continues to be produced to this day. Given the survivability of Toyota and Lexus cars, this transmission will be in demand for a long time to come.
