Winter tires from December 1 - mandatory

From December 1 to March 1, drivers in Belarus are required to use Winter tires. Please note that the rules do not specify the presence or absence of snow cover. That is, even in the absence of snow, during the specified period, winter tires are needed.

According to clause 207-1 of the SDA: “When participating in road traffic from December 1 to March 1, cars with a technically permissible total weight of up to 3.5 tons inclusive, cars and utility vehicles with a technically permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tons, as well as buses with a technically permissible total weight of up to 5 tons must be equipped with winter tires. Winter tires are installed on all wheels of the vehicle.

At the same time, certain requirements are imposed on rubber. In particular, winter tires for motor vehicles intended for use on icy or snowy road surfaces, marked with a mountain peak symbol with three peaks and a snowflake inside it, or with the signs "M + S," M&S, "M.S," M S or " All seasons, during operation on the specified surface, they must have a residual tread height of at least 4 mm (appendix 4, chapter 5, clause 25 of the traffic rules).

For violation of this requirement of the Rules of the Road, in accordance with part 3 of Article 18.12 of the Code of the Republic of Belarus on Administrative Offenses, a fine of up to 1 base unit is imposed on the driver.

For a repeated such violation within a year, a fine of 2 to 5 basic units is imposed on the driver.

  • Hold the steering wheel with both hands to maintain control;
  • slow down: the tires will have better grip on the road surface;
  • significantly increase the distance to other vehicles;
  • pay close attention to the actions of other drivers and the surroundings. It is easier to prevent a dangerous situation than to react to it;
  • before turning, brake smoothly only in a straight line until the turn. Do not brake in a turn as this may cause a skid;
  • when turning, slow down slowly before turning and maintain speed during the turn;
  • when turning, do not make sudden movements with the steering wheel;
  • periodically inspect the tires: check the residual tread depth and pressure;
  • Before driving, check the condition of the windshield wipers and control the level of the windshield washer fluid.

Traffic police reminds about the need for seasonal tire change | Society

On November 24, 2017, the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Republic of Belarus will hold the next Unified Road Safety Day under the motto: “Winter tires for every car!”, aimed at preventing traffic accidents in winter conditions.

Large-scale preventive actions and raids will be carried out, during which inspectors will check how drivers have prepared their “ iron horses for use in winter. Also, law enforcement officers will give preventive talks in labor collectives and educational institutions and hold lectures on this topic, said Viktoriya TSARUK, senior inspector for A&P OGAI of the Oktyabrsky District Department of Internal Affairs of Minsk.

According to paragraph 207-1 of the Rules of the Road of the Republic of Belarus, when participating in road traffic from December 1 to March 1, cars with a technically permissible total weight of up to 3.5 tons inclusive, cars and utility vehicles with a technically permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tons, and Also, buses with a technically permissible total weight of up to 5 tons must be equipped with winter tires. Winter tires are installed on all wheels of the vehicle and must comply with the requirements of part two of paragraph 25 of Appendix 4 to these Rules.

Despite this, experts and the State traffic inspectorate strongly recommend seasonal tire changes when the temperature stops rising above seven degrees Celsius, and outside the window it is already minus and near-minus temperatures, and precipitation in the form of snow and wet snow. Winter tires for motor vehicles intended for operation on icy or snowy road surfaces must be marked with a three-peak mountain peak with a snowflake inside it, or with the signs “M+S”, “M&S”, “M S or “All Seasons and have a residual tread height of at least 4 mm.

For untimely equipment of vehicles with winter tires, administrative liability is provided for under Art. 18.22 part 5 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Belarus, which provides for punishment in the form of a warning or a fine in the amount of up to 0.5 of the base value.

If the vehicle is fitted with winter tires, but the remaining tread depth is less than 4 mm, the vehicle will be considered out of order and prohibited from participating in road traffic. Responsibility in this case arises under part 3 of Article 18.12 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Belarus, according to which driving a vehicle with malfunctions entails a warning or a fine of up to 1 base unit. In case of committing actions, responsibility for which is provided for by part 3 of article 18.12 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Belarus, repeatedly within one year after the imposition of an administrative penalty for the same violations, they will be qualified under part 9 of article 18.12 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Belarus and will entail a fine in the amount of 2 up to 5 base units.

Winter tires help to shorten the braking distance and significantly improve vehicle handling in icy conditions. At low temperatures, summer tires harden and cease to perform their functions of providing good grip with the road surface, the use of such tires becomes unsafe.

It is important not only to replace summer tires winter, but also fully prepare the car for winter. Need to check general state interior heating systems, without fail make sure that the external lighting devices are in good condition and adjust them. In a period when most of the time it is dark, foggy, raining and snowing, it is very important to have good lighting. It is necessary to fill the washer with a special anti-freeze fluid, it is also recommended to check the battery before severe frosts.

In difficult weather conditions, the main thing is increased attention and extreme caution on the road. Drivers should choose a safe speed mode based on the specific situation on the road, increase the distance and side interval, avoid sudden acceleration and braking, unnecessary maneuvers. In winter, the number of accidents involving pedestrians increases significantly, due to difficult weather conditions and short daylight hours. Therefore, do not forget that the most effective way for pedestrians, to protect themselves on the road at night is to identify themselves with retroreflective elements.

The action of the traffic police "Life is more expensive than tires!: from December 1 to March 1, it is forbidden to drive without winter tires in Belarus

The State Traffic Inspectorate of Belarus until December 4 will carry out the republican preventive campaign “Life is more expensive than tires!. The action starts tomorrow, November 24, and is aimed at preventing accidents in winter conditions, as well as promoting the equipment of vehicles with winter tires, which are mandatory in Belarus from December 1 to March 1. This was reported in the State traffic inspectorate of Belarus.

As part of the campaign, large-scale preventive measures for drivers will be carried out. Traffic police officers will speak in labor collectives, where they will remind vehicle owners about the rules for safe participation in road traffic in winter conditions, traffic rules.

“From December 1, traffic police inspectors will conduct raids during which they will check how drivers have prepared their cars for winter operation,” the traffic police said.

Recall that from December 1 to March 1, winter tires must be installed on all wheels of cars with a technically permissible total weight of up to 3.5 tons inclusive, cars and utility vehicles with a technically permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tons, as well as buses with a technically permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tons. with a total weight of up to 5 tons. Tires must be marked with a mountain peak with three peaks and a snowflake inside it, or with the signs “M+S”, “M&S”, “M.S”, “M S or “All seasons. The residual height of the tread pattern must not be less than 4 mm.

For participation in road traffic of vehicles not equipped with winter tires, from December 1 to March 1, administrative liability is provided (part 5 of article 18.22 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Belarus, others traffic violations) in the form of a warning or a fine up to five tenths of the base value.

Traffic police: in Belarus, drivers may be required to use winter tires in the cold season

The topic of mandatory replacement of summer tires for winter ones with the advent of cold weather was again raised by representatives of the traffic police. “We are in favor of the mandatory use of winter tires in the autumn-winter period, when the meteorological conditions become difficult,” said Vadim Garkun, deputy head of the Minsk traffic police, in an interview with STV. - And, as a result, the state pavement requires appropriate equipment of the vehicle to ensure the safety of the traffic that has developed in the capital, and, I think, in other regions.

“You must understand: a car on summer tires today is technically very poorly adapted to operation in similar conditions- said Vadim Garkun. - At the household level, it is clear that the stopping distance of a car with summer tires can differ several times from the stopping distance of a car equipped with winter tires. And when the flow is heterogeneous, when the same cars have different stopping distances, this further complicates the action of law-abiding drivers in terms of taking into account the behavior of others, and predicting the traffic situation. As a result, the heterogeneity of the flow leads to an increase in the number of accidents.

“When everyone is in the same conditions, it is easy to predict traffic situation, it is easy to make adequate correct decisions, - said the deputy head of the Minsk traffic police. - As for the world experience, the developed countries have already taken this path. As far as I know, today in Germany a date has been set from which a vehicle not only cannot move without winter tires, the owner of such a vehicle can be held administratively liable, even if this car just stood on a street road during this period network and could potentially be used in road traffic, but was not equipped with winter tires.

Traffic police: winter tires in Belarus will not be needed soon

At the meeting of the round table "Measures for the prevention and prevention emergencies on the roads of the republic in the winter, which took place on November 10 in Minsk, the topic of the need for winter tires was discussed. Anatoly Sushko, head of the department of scientific, methodological and legal support of the department of the traffic police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus, talking about this, said: “Winter tires are an element of safety. We are for him. But it doesn't have to be mandatory.

Judging by the words of representatives of the State traffic inspectorate who participated in the event, they are satisfied with the legislatively fixed recommendation for drivers to use winter tires in winter. However, they believe that the atmosphere around the issue of mandatory winter tires is being pumped up by its sellers. And, as Andrei Sharanda, senior inspector for special assignments of the State Automobile Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, noted, they do not voice a number of points. For example, where to store summer clothes, because there are no necessary premises in Belarus, unlike in Western countries. In addition, they will have to “change the shoes of trucks and also solve the problem of warehousing,” BelaPAN reports.

Despite all the above, Stanislav Solovey, senior inspector of the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, warned that in the event of a traffic accident due to the fault of a driver whose car was not “changed into winter tires, this circumstance will not be aggravating, but will be “taken into account as much as possible when analyzing an accident.

He also said that in the fall of 2008, on the first day that snow fell, 11 people died on the country's roads. The main cause of these accidents was summer tires. This was also the main cause of the road traffic accidents that killed six people on November 5, 2009, when snow fell for the first time in the republic.

Therefore, the State traffic inspectorate, on the eve of the onset of cold weather and snowfall, urges drivers, first of all, to change their driving style in snow and ice conditions. Andrey Sharenda drew attention to the need to ensure sufficient visibility from the driver's seat, which is not facilitated by fogging of windows from the inside of the cabin due to the inability of drivers to use airflow and the unwillingness to clear all windows of snow before driving.

Regarding the preparation of roads and streets for operation in the winter, Mikhail Banadyk, senior inspector of the State Automobile Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, said that the State Traffic Inspectorate conducted inspections of public utilities throughout the country to ensure they were ready for work in winter, to create a system for prompt response to changes in weather conditions. In particular, we checked the equipment special equipment, preparation of a sand-salt mixture, the availability of stocks of fuels and lubricants.

According to Mikhail Banadyk, already today warning signs have been installed in places most likely to form ice, for example, on bridges, signal milestones marking their borders have been set up along the roadsides for the winter, and shields along the roads to prevent the formation of drifts.

Currently, there are 66 road measuring stations on public roads, which allow you to control the transparency of the atmosphere, wind direction and speed, temperature environment and roadbed. All information is sent to the central control room of the Belavtodor. This, according to the representative of the traffic police, allows specialists to quickly make management decisions, responding to changes in the situation on the roads.

According to Anatoly Sushko, head of the department of scientific, methodological and legal support of the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, since the beginning of 2009, 77,077 accidents have occurred in Belarus, including 5,462 with victims. This is 860 less than in the same period of 2008. 1,046 people died and 5,902 were injured. This is less by 254 and 586 people, respectively. Due to the fault of drunk drivers, 818 accidents occurred (minus 97).

What is special about winter tires?
Many people believe that the differences are in the height of the profile and a different tread pattern, but this is not entirely true. Summer tires have a different composition rubber compound which is less susceptible to high temperatures.
Simply put, rubber does not float at high temperatures, stably clinging to the roadway. But at the same time, it "dubes" at low temperatures, not providing proper adhesion. As a rule, a temperature of +7 is considered the lower threshold, and a temperature of 0 degrees is the critical point, after which the tires begin to shamelessly slide.

Winter tires are softer and less susceptible to low temperatures. However, when the air is warmed up to +7 and above, they begin to “float”, wear out faster, and behave imperfectly when driving on asphalt.
When is it right and at what temperature should it be changed summer tires for winter? There is no single answer here, if we talk about specific dates and numbers. Much depends on geography and climate.

Which tires to choose: with or without studs?
It is known that the kits are divided into two conditional categories - studded and non-studded. To understand which option to give preference to, it is necessary to analyze the scope of the machine. If the car spends most of the time driving on asphalt, packed snow or snow porridge with an admixture of reagents, then you should select friction Velcro. If, basically, under the wheels of the car there is ice or loose snow, then when you change summer tires to winter, you should think about installing studded wheels.
Another difficult choice is the choice between Scandinavian type tires and European. European models are designed for mild Mediterranean winters, have a diagonal tread pattern and an extensive network of drainage channels, coupled with powerful lugs along the edges. Her element is wet or muddy winter roads.
The Scandinavian type is distinguished by a less dense, more profile pattern. As a rule, with diamond-shaped checkers. They will show themselves better when driving on snow or ice, more actively pushing through these surfaces.

Answers to popular questions
A few competent tips on what and how you can save money, and what not to do.
Should you look into all-season tires? Some introductory information. The so-called "all seasons" feel best in the near-zero zone, namely from -5 to +10 degrees. Beyond this temperature, they become imperfect, and sometimes even dangerous. At the same time, in any profile tests, they will still yield to both summer and winter tires. Therefore, all seasons are not recommended - it is better to change tires once a year than to put your health at risk. Can I buy used tires? Many drivers, when it is necessary to change summer tires to winter tires, begin to think about buying used models. Initially, it seems that this is a rather attractive option, especially considering how much a used tire costs. A model that is still suitable in appearance can cost 20-30% cheaper. However, this benefit is deceptive. The fact is that by the end of the first season, the grip properties of the tire are reduced by 10-15%. And in the second season - 25-30%. It is this age that tires are sold. Therefore, here you can get a kit that is practically unusable. Those. In fact, the purchase is not recommended.

How to save correctly?
There are also smart ways to save money. When you change your winter tires, you should not necessarily chase the latest innovations. In addition, older models are perfect - they cost less, but the characteristics are the same. In addition, when choosing, you can purchase tires with a smaller landing size, compensating for this with a profile height. It is also logical to purchase wheels with the speed index with which you usually drive (it makes no sense to overpay for tires traveling 150-170 km / h if you do not move at such speeds).

Good roads to you!

Winter tires law in Belarus

Motorists will be required to use winter tires from December 1 to March 1

Today, the president signed a decree amending the law “On Measures to Improve Road Safety,” BelTA informs. One of the most notable changes will be the mandatory use of winter tires between 1 December and 1 March. The changes will also affect training in driving schools, road sections, bike paths and window tinting. The law will come into force in three months.

It is planned to use winter tires on cars with a technically permissible total weight of up to 3.5 tons, cars and utility vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons, and buses weighing up to 5 tons from December 1 to March 1.

It also establishes the obligation to transport children under the age of 12 in a car using child restraints or other means that allow the child to be fastened using seat belts (except if the child is over 150 cm tall, and also when transported in a taxi car).

Among other things, the training time for practical driving of a car during the training of drivers of motor vehicles of category B is increased from 40 to 50 hours. At the same time, driving schools are given a four-month period to organize driver training in accordance with the new requirements.

Road elements include landing sites and safety islands located on the carriageway, which will extend the obligation of road owners to maintain road elements in a safe condition for movement to these structures. In addition, new types of road markings are being introduced to organize the movement of bicycles, to indicate the directions of movement along lanes at intersections with a complex configuration.

The minimum degree of light transmission for the windshield of a vehicle, at which it is allowed to participate in road traffic, is also changed from 75% to 70%.

The Decree comes into force three months after its official publication.

When to change tires for winter / summer in Belarus?

When should you change your winter/summer tires?

In this section you can get acquainted with information about the recommended periods for changing winter and summer tires in Belarus.

Let's start with the transition to winter tires, which is more relevant because. Riding in winter on summer tires is not safe. Under the weather conditions in our country, due to high humidity, you need to be as careful as possible, because. a sharp drop in temperature will lead to icing of the road surface and the inability to drive a vehicle, and as a rule, an accident! In order to avoid this situation, it is necessary to change summer tires to winter tires before the expected frosts (on various weather sites). But it should be taken into account important factor- the presence of queues, because not only you will know about the approaching frosts, and regardless of your place of residence: a metropolis, a regional town or just an urban-type settlement - you definitely cannot avoid queues !!! Therefore, plan “re-shoeing of your vehicle not just before the onset of frost, but in advance. Also, remember that even in the absence of sub-zero temperature the presence of precipitation in the form of wet snow can lead to various unforeseen situations for you. So-called "porridge" is a huge threat to summer tires.

Now let's talk about a more pleasant time of the year - spring! I would like to remove winter tires as soon as possible so that they do not wear out and keep them for a couple more seasons, but there is no need to rush. Again, I strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the upcoming air temperature and the presence of precipitation, and only in case of stable weather, change winter tires to summer tires, because. in fact, the use of winter tires on dry pavement at a temperature of +8 degrees Celsius leads to rapid wear, and if you become the owner of studded wheels, then, as they say, you won’t find a place from the studs, they will completely wear out and fly out! In addition, one should take into account the factor that the braking distance on a dry road for wheels with spikes will be much longer.

Based on the foregoing, taking into account the driving experience and experience of each driver, you should always treat the wheels with due care and attention, it is always important to apply the brakes in time and get the desired result.

And also remember that it is very important proper storage seasonal tires, about which you can lament in Our articles!

Happy road! Your DoctorShina.

All-season tires - a replacement for summer and winter? -Blog TAM.BY

All-season tires are popular among car owners who do not want to pay for two sets of tires and consider such tires to be universal. Let's try to figure out whether all-seasons are really universal and can replace winter or summer tires.

All season tires: what is it?

It is believed that “all seasons can be used at any time of the year. This category includes all models that have proven themselves in temperatures close to zero, when driving is the most dangerous. They are used in their manufacture special formulations rubber, the main feature lies in the special traction characteristics, due to which an excellent ride on ice and snow is provided. In summer, all-season tires allow comfortable cornering, but driving requires caution on the part of the driver, especially on wet roads. It is worth noting that such tires are ideal for European winters with mild cold and minimal rainfall.

Today, expensive tires are also on the market, the characteristics of which change under the influence of temperature changes. There is an opinion that the future belongs to such rubber, but so far they are used quite rarely.

Marking

The following designations will help to distinguish “all seasons”: “all season (AS - all seasons), “tous terrain (all coverages)," Any weather "(AW - any weather).

Differences of all-season tires from winter and summer

The main difference from winter tires is the absence of spikes and special Velcro, which ensure normal movement on snow covered road. Therefore, all-season tires are not designed for use in climatic zones with severe winters, the tread pattern will be clogged with snow. They should be abandoned in heavy snowfalls, especially if there is no garage and the car is parked at night in the open.

The tread pattern of “all seasons” is divided into two parts: with fine cuts (like winter ones) and solid blocks (like summer ones). When used in summer, all-season tires wear out faster than summer tires.

How to choose all season tires?

We have already talked about the general rules for choosing and buying tires. Now let's take a closer look at the "all-weather seasons. When buying tires, you need to pay attention to the manufacturer. The second indicator is the quality of the tread, important role operating conditions play, some models are designed for warm regions, others for country driving. Do not forget about the tire index: when choosing, indicators such as speed index, load capacity, compliance with international standards should be taken into account.

You can buy all-season tires at tire centers, which you can easily find in the TAM.BY catalog.

About spikes and tires. How a loophole in the law caused a race among rubber manufacturers

If you buy tires by looking only at the price tag, you are wasting the work of at least hundreds of people. Scientists - chemists, physicists and mechanics - come up with ingenious schemes, how in the best possible way stick the car to the roadway. Well, what to hide, they break the brain, how to sell more of these same tires. Sometimes legislators interfere with these plans with their own requirements, and manufacturers have to strain their convolutions again, how to get around these very laws and stay in the win. This is what happened in the world of studded tyres: a single demand from the Scandinavian governments spawned a lot of innovations as well as competition for the market.

“Who might be interested in studded tires? - There is such an opinion in Belarus. - In our area, the spikes rustle on the asphalt more than they really cling to the icy road. Nevertheless, an interesting picture is observed among tire manufacturers: in last years sales and orders for spikes in Belarus are growing. According to one of the leading manufacturers, 77% of winter tire sales in the territory of Eastern Europe falls precisely on spikes. Here one can be ironic about the removal of snow from the streets of the capital and the state of the canvas in winter in the regions, but you can’t argue with the numbers - demand is increasing.

And if five years ago the difference between spikes different brands was rather arbitrary for the uninitiated consumer, now they vary greatly both in the shape of the spike itself and in their number, and manufacturers vied with each other to report on even more advanced clutch technologies. And the technology competition began with one law adopted in the Scandinavian countries. Or rather, with small reservation in this regulation, which the leading companies decided to use.

The law is the law, but...

The main market for studded tires has always been just a few countries: the northern states of the USA, Canada, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Everything was calm until 2013 - until some point, according to EU regulations, there should not have been more than 130 spikes on the wheel, otherwise it had too much effect on the asphalt. But the Scandinavians, for whom ecology is by no means an empty word, began to figure out how to reduce air pollution in cities. The scientists came to the conclusion: while driving on studded tires, the car “rips out the smallest particles of the coating (actually dust) from the asphalt and scatters them behind it. They rise into the air and spread at a height of no more than two meters. According to the findings of the researchers, the citizens, along with the air, inhale these particles. Then a logical chain was built: asphalt consists, among other things, of bitumen, and it contains many substances that are harmful to humans when the threshold of permissible maximum concentrations is exceeded. Therefore, the number of thorns must be reduced so that the nation does not suffer from diseases of the respiratory system.

So, from July 1, 2013, at the suggestion of road builders and environmentalists in the EU countries, the number of studs on tires was limited: no more than 50 pieces per linear meter of tread. At the same time, there was a clause in the law: the number of spikes could be more if the manufacturer proves their harmlessness. The proof could be provided by a natural experiment. During it, the test tire was compared with the so-called reference tire, which has 50 studs per linear meter. Only in this way can a tire manufacturer prove to certification bodies that its products, regardless of the number of studs, do not spoil the roads and the health of citizens. And this very nuance has pushed companies to rapid technical evolution.

The race has begun

The top five winter tire manufacturers (Michelin, Nokian, Pirelli, Continental, Goodyear) immediately began to work on the restructuring of production. The most important task is to invent spikes of such a shape, weight and placement on the tread blocks that do not lose grip. The paths of manufacturers have diverged before, and even more so here. Some remained true to the round shape, others came up with square, rectangular, hexagonal, trapezoidal spikes, there is also a three-beam star. Nokian, for example, uses different core shapes on the same tire - for "an excellent balance between longitudinal and lateral grip on ice. A variety of options can be seen in this diagram.

But the development of a spike shape is far from the only condition for falling within the scope of the law. It is also important their number, location, seat, composition of the tread rubber and the substrate for the stud. Chemists are struggling with the latest problems.

Surveys and surveys of engineers

We decided to look at how manufacturers are trying to win over competitors in the technology race using the example of one of the top companies - Michelin. To do this, we went to St. Petersburg - a city whose streets have not been sprinkled with sand for several years now. They say that the city authorities abandoned this idea in order to preserve the aesthetics of the cultural capital of Russia, to minimize dirt. From public utilities, such a decision required efforts - they had to attract equipment more often and more. For ordinary drivers, the new rules meant an unequivocal transition to studded tires and a forced reset average speed within the city limits. It is still difficult to say how effective the lack of sand and reagents is for the city budget, but the locals do not seem to complain. It seems that St. Petersburg residents are only glad that they can finally forget about the brown porridge under their feet.

In the winter season 2018-2019, Michelin will introduce a new product - X-Ice North 4. In the context of our topic, these tires are interesting because they managed to introduce 250 studs for the size 205/55 R16. Engineers estimate that there are about 1,400 stud positions on the tire in total. Then, taking into account the size of the spike and its seat, it was determined that in the longitudinal and transverse sections on the contact patch it is possible to line up 22 lines. Because of this, the tread shape was redesigned, many positions turned out to be superfluous. After the elimination, exactly 250 remained.

Next, we thought about the shape of the spike itself. According to Michelin representatives, it makes no sense to make a carbide core square or trapezoidal - anyway, with mileage it will be erased to a round shape. The engineers turned to colleagues from the sports department, known for victories in WRC rally races. They suggested: when it comes into contact with asphalt, the spike deviates in such a way that not only the carbide element, but also part of the body is involved in contact with ice. So they came up with the shape of a new rim. Moreover, they decided to make it not from aluminum, but from steel - they calculated that the top layer of rust would be erased after 100 meters of travel.

Then it was time to think about comfort. Many drivers complain about the noise pollution of studded tires - it rustles too loudly. To solve the problem, a mathematical algorithm was developed. The program measured the grip during acceleration and the noise level. Eventually optimal balance was found.

In parallel, chemists worked. They had to create two rubber compounds: an internal one to hold the stud (softer than usual substrate) and an external one for the tread, capable of not tanning at minus 60 degrees. As a result, the spike gently touches the canvas and does not pull out the very harmful dust from the asphalt. This has become possible thanks to the use of new generation elastomers. In a word, tires are science.

Cold games

We were offered to test studded tires different manufacturers on identical Audi A6 Allroad. Unusual test- driving on asphalt on spikes to hear the difference in noise. To be honest, I have never had an ear for music, and the differences in decibels in official readings are quite insignificant. Therefore, according to my subjective perception, there were no winners in this exercise.

As Michelin admitted, the biggest difference is visible on the ice. When driving on snow, the new tire largely retained the performance of the previous generation model.

The rest of the tests are standard - braking distance measurements and subjective sensations during maneuvering. Frankly, I wanted to scold Michelin for at least something, but it didn’t work out. Literally a few laps on an icy track divided the spikes into two camps: the lagging Bridgestone and Continental and the excellent Nokian and Michelin. It seems to be the same speed, identical intensity of braking and turning the steering wheel, but the cars behave differently. The first bites into the ice, tears forward at the start and holds the trajectory, the second slips and goes into a skid, knocking down the restrictive cones. On ice, the difference in braking distances between the X-Ice North 4 and competitors is about two meters in favor of the “French”, the lap is three seconds faster.

The weather pleases less and less: then pouring rain mixed with snow, then fog and heat. The road immediately reacted to this, sometimes, unfortunately,. Traditionally, the increased accident rate on such days is associated with the change of rubber shoes. On the one hand, according to the law, summer tires can be driven until December 1, on the other hand, road conditions already far from comfortable. the site tried to figure out whether it was time to change shoes or whether a summer tire on wet and cold pavement would work better than a winter one.

“Based on the current weather conditions, summer tires can hardly work anymore,” he is categorical Sergey Ovchinnikov, Head of the Counter-Emergency Training Center. - The solid tread of summer tires is effective at temperatures up to a maximum of +5 degrees. So you need to switch to winter tires without waiting for December 1st. Because there may already be some sections of country roads or overpasses in the city that are blown by the wind, and icy conditions can form on them.

I think I will not be too mistaken in assessing the braking distance on summer and winter tires on wet pavement - plus or minus it will be the same. But on ice or snow, this difference is simply huge. And it always comes as a surprise to the driver.

When it comes to driving in icy conditions, there are obvious things: keep your distance, accelerate and brake smoothly, slow down, control what is happening behind. But many more forget to turn their heads more often, controlling what is happening around. Leaving the intersection on your green, look around. It is possible that a car can “slip” there, which, due to icy conditions, could not stop in time. It doesn't matter who is right or wrong in this situation.

If it’s raining, as it is now, don’t forget to dry windows and mirrors to ensure good visibility, the expert recommends.

Many owners of studded tires delay the moment of changing shoes until the real first snow, justifying this by saying that studded tires quickly wear out on asphalt, and in general, studded tires are ineffective on asphalt.

- In fact, this savings is imaginary and fears are in vain. Modern studded tires are designed so that the studs "recess" on asphalt and it is the tire tread that works. Besides, anyway, most of the time, if we live in the city, we drive on clean asphalt. And, having changed shoes a week earlier, we will not reduce the tire life too much. But we will reduce the risks significantly.

It snowed this morning and you haven't changed your shoes yet? Do not leave the house at least until 11 o'clock

What if winter caught right on the road? I went to visit on dry asphalt, and snow fell on the way back. Sergei Ovchinnikov advises not to ignore the weather forecast. For two or three days ahead, it is given quite accurate.

- If you have already got into such a situation when you got up in the morning and it snowed, then I would postpone everything and wait a few hours. Usually the first snow will melt by 11-12 or the road services will do their job. Like it or not, it is still safer to drive on clean asphalt on summer tires.

So for those who stayed on summer tires, there is only one advice: change shoes as soon as possible. Some people think: “But I’ll drive more slowly, keep my distance. I'm protecting myself." In fact, it does not work in the city at least. If you keep a large distance, another car is sure to wedge into this space, reducing this safe distance several times at once. Therefore, no matter how slowly we drive, no matter how far we keep, an accident is a matter of timing or luck.

- You need to understand one important thing: the most precious thing you have is with you in the car - these are your children, relatives or friends. We are responsible for them,” the expert concludes.

“Most often those who fly into the ditch are those who have either summer tires or bad winter tires”

Evacuation Service Owner Eugene agrees that the first snow or ice leads to an increased number of "departures" on the roads.

- According to my personal observations, most cars that fly off the road in snowfall or sleet are shod with either summer or worn winter tires. Drivers do not correlate their capabilities and weather conditions. And on bad winter tires, they think, it is already possible to be worn. And, of course, fog and limited visibility also lead to "unscheduled" exits into ditches.

Pavel Yukhnevich, a leading sales specialist at avtoshina.by, says that today most motorists have already changed summer tires to winter ones.

- I would say that on November 14 (when the first snow fell. - Note .. Today it will be the same. Although in fact, from year to year, experience shows that Belarusians are disciplined people. In my opinion, 65-70 percent of cars As a rule, all-wheel drive cars and SUVs do it a little later, and now they have already begun to arrive.Many, of course, are now buying new cars, they are buying winter tires. Geely Atlas tire size is quite scarce, it is difficult to find them.

But there was no special surge among those wishing to change their shoes yesterday. Our tire service works as usual, although everything is scheduled two days in advance. On weekends, you can change your shoes in a queue. Well, we are waiting for fans of spikes. They change their shoes last in the fall and first in the spring. Save the spikes. Today we have the first car changed into studded tires.

Getting ready for winter: five naive questions about winter tires. Winter tires are obligatory in Belarus

The new law obliges to drive in winter on winter tires - News - Zarya

Belarusian drivers will have to change tires for the winter and carry children only in special car seats. Such innovations are provided for by the Decree of the President, which was published on October 16 and will come into force in three months.

Putting winter tires on wheels before the cold weather is as natural as changing light summer shoes for warm boots. Winter tires are much better at handling slush, ice and other weather conditions.

Alas, not all motorists understand this. Ask the traffic police - and they will tell you about the many winter accidents that could not have happened if the driver had “changed his shoes” in advance. Having saved a couple of hundred dollars on tires, people lose their car, health, and sometimes life ...

Now the use of winter tires in the cold season is advisory. In other words, you will not be fined for summer tires in winter. But if, God forbid, an accident occurs in winter, the lack of proper tires will be considered an aggravating factor.

However, from January everything will change. The new Ordinance makes "wearing" winter tires mandatory. This year, this period will be slightly reduced due to the fact that the document will come into force from mid-January. However, in subsequent years, winter tires will have to be driven from December 1 to March 1. The measure concerns not only personal, but also official transport all kinds. Including buses.

The penalty will still be relatively small. As Alexander Zanimon, deputy head of the department of scientific, methodological and legal support of the State Automobile Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, told BelTA, for "shoes" out of season they will be punished with an amount of 0.5 of the base rate.

In a chair is better

If a car at a speed of 55 kilometers per hour crashes into, for example, a pole, a child sitting in the cabin experiences an impact force equal to that which he would receive if he fell from the fourth floor onto asphalt. Can you imagine? Of course, the car has seat belts and airbags. But - they are designed taking into account the physiology of an adult ...

In a word - a method of transportation is safer than Baby chair until invented. No wonder the laws of many countries prohibit the transportation of children without the use of special restraints. The most common age limit is twelve years. In Bulgaria, Poland, Turkey - ten years, in Switzerland - seven.

Now there is such a law in Belarus. Since January 2015, the Decree provides for the obligation to transport children under 12 in car seats. An exception is made only for children over 150 centimeters tall and for cases when children are transported by a taxi.

According to the traffic police, the law will reduce the number of children injured in road accidents. Last year, in road accidents that occurred in the Brest region, in almost half of the cases, children-passengers were injured.

What else will change with the entry into force of the Decree?

In driving schools, the training time for practical driving for category B will increase from 40 to 50 hours. Driving schools will be given a four-month period to organize driver training in accordance with the new requirements;

Requirements for tinted windshields will become softer. According to the Decree, the minimum allowable degree of light transmission is reduced from 75 to 70%;

The elements of the road will include landing sites and safety islands located on the carriageway. This will oblige road owners to keep these facilities in a condition that meets all norms and standards;

The document also introduces new types of road markings - to organize the movement of bicycles, to indicate the directions of traffic along lanes at intersections with a complex configuration.

The requirements for winter tires in the countries of the European region depend on climatic conditions each individual state. Often the rules oblige drivers to install winter tires under certain circumstances (eg. heavy snow) or driving on mountain roads. However, there are also specific rules. Let's look at some examples:

  • Belgium. The climate of the kingdom is not characterized by severe frosts and snow, so winter tires are not required. However, frequent rains and a slight minus on the thermometer can cover the road with ice. In this regard, it is allowed to use snow chains, but only on the condition that they do not damage the asphalt.
  • Slovakia. Vehicles equipped with winter or all-season tires from November 15 to March 31 in case of adverse weather. Snow chains are used when direct indication of a road sign. Only emergency vehicles can install studded tires.
  • Switzerland. The Central European Confederation does not oblige winter tyres. However, car owners who obstruct traffic due to summer tires are responsible.

If we talk about the neighbors of Belarus, then the closest requirements are made in Lithuania, where winter tires are mandatory from November 1 to April 1. At the same time, all-weather and studded tires with a minimum tread depth of at least 3 mm are allowed.

According to the traffic rules of Belarus, car owners are required to drive on winter tires from December 1 to March 1. Winter tires include those tires on the sidewall of which the M + S mark is applied or there is a snowflake marking against the background of three mountain peaks (3PMSF). The remaining tread depth must be greater than 4 mm.

Violation of the rules entails a fine of 0.5 base for driving on summer tires, as well as a fine of up to 1 base for driving with a worn tread. In case of repeated violation within a year, the amount of the fine may be increased.

However, it is not the ban itself and its punishment that should stimulate car owners. Drivers should think about their own health and the safety of other road users. Already at 7 °C summer tires begins to lose traction, resulting in poor control and increased stopping distance. All-season tire models are resistant to light frost, however, for complete protection, it is recommended to use a specialized tire. winter set tires.

five naive questions about winter tires

On October 13, the President of the Republic of Belarus signed Decree No. 483, which amends and supplements Decree No. 551 of November 28, 2005 “On measures to improve road safety. Among the innovations are the obligation to transport children under the age of 12 in a car using child restraints or other means that allow the child to be safely fastened using seat belts, as well as the mandatory use of winter tires from December 1 to March 1.

By and large, it becomes mandatory that for conscious car owners has long been the norm. But for the rest, there is time to fulfill the new requirements: the decree comes into force 3 months after its official publication.

Why change tires at all?

Indeed, in Soviet times, no winter tires were heard of. But this is not at all a reason to refuse to use new technologies. Winter is on the way, so tires with a snowflake or the M + S inscription on the sidewall are relevant. Contrary to popular misconception from summer tires they differ not only in a more developed and deep tread pattern.

Why do summer tires become stiffer (“tanned”) in cold weather, while winter tires do not? Because the composition of the rubber compound is different. In the manufacture winter tires they add more rubber - and the rubber remains elastic even at low temperatures. Well, coupled with a carefully designed tread with deep grooves and a large number of thinly cut sipes, this allows you to provide good grip with the road.

European or Scandinavian?

But here everything is not so simple. In order for the tire to work perfectly on asphalt, some qualities are needed, on snow - others, on ice - still others. So manufacturers have to look for a balance, giving preference to some characteristics and partially sacrificing others. This is how two groups of non-studded winter tires arose - the so-called "European", designed for operation in countries with a mild climate, and "Scandinavian" - for harsh winters.

Which of these tires is the best? The question was posed incorrectly. It would be more correct to ask which of the groups is better suited for our conditions. And to clarify which roads you usually have to drive in winter.

It is clear that “European models are in any case not the best choice for Belarusian winters. Yes, they are quiet and economical, they work great on dry and wet asphalt, on slush of melted snow. But on an uncleared or icy winter road, they are almost as helpless as summer tires. The same applies to the so-called “All Season”, which supposedly is suitable for any time of the year, but in fact it is good just in the “transitional autumn and spring months.

Much more preferable for our conditions are “Scandinavian models, which are universal in a certain way, since they work well on almost all types of coverage, except for ice. Therefore, if you don’t have to deal with the latter, it makes sense to give preference to just such non-studded winter shoes.

Or maybe studded?

On ice, studded models have no equal.

If you live outside of big cities and often have to drive on icy roads or you just want to always be fully equipped, then we advise you to choose studded tires. True, you have to put up with the fact that they are noisier and, as a rule, provide more fuel consumption compared to friction (non-studded) models. In addition, in most European countries (with the exception of the Scandinavian, and more recently the Baltic states), spikes are prohibited. And this means that, for example, the way to Poland on such tires is ordered.

Why pay more?

Even tires that are similar in type can have serious differences in their qualities and characteristics. Much here depends on the experience of the manufacturer, technologies and materials used in production. The rule “the better, the more expensive, if not iron, then at least in most cases fair - but only from the point of view that good tires cannot be cheap. But the opposite is possible: a high price is not yet a guarantee of outstanding performance. Of course, when choosing, you will have to focus primarily on the budget. But then it would be nice to study the results of comparative tests in specialized publications and find out reviews real buyers the model you like.

New or used?

Often, due to limited funds, Belarusian motorists look towards used tires or give them preference, believing that used tires famous brands better than the new Chinese or Belarusian ones. You can understand this motivation. But here's what you should also think about. Tires are a complex and, in a certain sense, delicate product. The qualities inherent in them depend not only on the residual height of the tread, but also on the service life. After four or five seasons, tires “age, which starts to affect their performance.

But “rubber can be killed much earlier - by improper storage and careless handling. You don’t know how the previous owner treated the tires, how the seller transported them, and many defects are not visible to the eye. Therefore, if you buy a “beushka”, then only from those whom you trust. After all, tires are first and foremost about your safety and that of those around you.

October, the first cold days, when you want to wrap yourself in everything that is in the house from warm clothes. If now the temperature outside is from +8 to +2, it's scary to think what will happen in winter. This fear of the cold forces us to go to shopping centers looking for warm clothes. Luckier are those who have the opportunity to drive in their own warm car, and not freeze at the bus stop and shake in the trolleybus. But remember, does your favorite car have winter “shoes? Have you forgotten to change your faithful friend's shoes into boots? When to change summer tires to winter and is it worth doing it at all?

Note to the motorist. When to change summer tires to winter.

Riding in “sneakers” in winter is, at the very least, stupid. Of course, unlike a person, a piece of metal (sorry, dear car fanatics who are ready to admit that their favorite “car” has a soul) cannot catch a cold. But “slip - easily! And then you will find yourself in a ditch, which is far from the worst option, with a complete misunderstanding of what just happened. And you can also “ride around the rink and fit into the back of the car in front. Don't worry, new participants will join your flash mob very soon, and a so-called "gathering of summer rubber lovers" will be formed. Which can completely paralyze traffic on this section of the road. Slippery track - ride on summer tires in winter!

In addition, summer tires in winter can be a significant blow to the wallet. In winter in the Republic of Belarus, traffic police officers have the right to fine a road user wearing summer tires. So, it’s hardly possible to save on “shoes for your four-wheeled friend. When to change summer tires to winter? In accordance with a presidential decree, the use of winter tires is mandatory from December 1 to March 1. Don't drag your feet and change your shoes at the last minute, unless waiting in line at a tire shop is on your list of hobbies. But you shouldn’t rush too much with this matter, otherwise there is a high risk of “stuffing the tires before the start of the season. And if summer tires are not delivered in time in the spring, then “felt boots may become unusable by next year.

The reason for this is the lower stiffness of winter tires compared to summer tires. Which, in warm weather, leads to severe tire wear. At low temperatures, tires become much stiffer. And without that, hard, summer tires simply “turn to stone, which has an extremely negative effect on traction and, accordingly, on the handling and braking of the car. In such weather conditions soft winter tires win.

As for which rubber to choose, with spikes or the so-called “Velcro”, the answer is not so clear. But if you are a city dweller, then “toothy tires, most likely, you don’t need anything. Studded tires are designed for driving on ice, which, on city roads, does not appear so often. But the inconvenience from it is much more than the benefits. Asphalt spoils and hits the glass of cars with flying spikes.

What else is worth saying? When to change summer tires for winter and whether it is worth changing it at all - everyone decides for himself. Perhaps you are a skating lover, but as a child, your parents did not give you to figure skating. And now, in retaliation to the whole world, you decided to invent your own the new kind sports - figure skating in a car. It is unlikely that this sport is destined to become an Olympic sport, but it will undoubtedly gain some popularity.
